INTRODUCING THE HEMEALUMEN

July…Here We Come!

I am hoping your lives are even better than you asked for this summer! We have been so blessed with rain these past few months. Everything is so green…it’s as if I can hear the trees, bushes, flowers, and grass yelling, “Yippee!”

Last week, I took my SUV in for some serious repair service. I’ve had my car for almost 17 years, and I have named her Betsy. This may sound weird, but I love her! Never in my life have I had a car as long as I’ve had Betsy. She was due for shocks, brakes, and all kinds of stuff. The repair shop gave me a loaner car, and I was told that Betsy wouldn’t be done until the following week. I would be without her for several days!

On Friday night, Manny said his horoscope had told him that he should be spontaneous with his partner, so he suggested we head over to Des Moines on Saturday for lunch. After all, we had a loaner car! (Manny and I love road trips, as they give us uninterrupted talking time.) On Saturday, we slept in and then got on the road to Des Moines at about 11:00.

The trip from Omaha to Des Moines is such a pretty drive! Rolling hills, lots of trees, ponds, and fields. Over the years, I have driven to Des Moines many times, but the drive last weekend put them all to shame. It was so incredibly beautiful! It was a mostly sunny day with just a few fluffy, billowing clouds overhead. The thing that most impressed me, however, was how beautifully green everything was. The road to Des Moines takes you by lots of farm fields, many of them terraced farming. The terrace steps in these fields looked like something out of a painting of Europe. So very lush. I was in awe.

When we got to Des Moines, we chose to visit the downtown restaurant Centro. This restaurant opened in 2002, and it is our favorite. We were seated at 2:00, had a wonderful server named Heather, and had an absolutely fabulous experience. Two and a half hours later, we headed back home.

On the way home, Manny told me that we had just had a Marriage Date. It had everything a wife could want. Spontaneity, romance, conversation…it doesn’t get any better than that!

Next month, Manny and I will have been married for five years. It doesn’t seem possible; time has just sped by. We both have learned a lot about life, about marriage, and about one another. I feel so incredibly blessed in my life. The trip to Des Moines? Simply delicious icing on the cake!

Have a great July!

Egg and Ham Scram Breakfast

In a large, greased baking dish, spread 1 bag (24 ounces) of frozen hashbrowns and 2 cups of cubed ham. Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded cheese over the top. Red, White, and Blue Pancakes

Wash and trim 2 cups of red and blue berries—raspberries, blueberries, strawberries. In a bowl, mix 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 2 Tablespoons of sugar, 1 Tablespoon of baking soda, and a dash of salt. In another bowl, whisk 2 eggs with 2 cups of buttermilk and add 1 Tablespoon of oil. Mix the wet ingredients and the dry. Grease the griddle or skillet and make the pancakes. Serve with the berries, whipped cream (the white), melted butter, and warm maple syrup.

sprinkle a bit of fresh dill on top. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Toss together just before serving.

Barbecue Beans

Put 4-5 cans of beans into a slow cooker. The beans can be any varieties you choose—butter, navy, pork and beans, green, yellow, kidney, lima, pinto. Add 1 pound of crumbled cooked hamburger or spicy sausage. Pour in 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce, 1/2 cup of ketchup, 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and 1 small onion (diced). Cook on low for 3-4 hours or bake in an oven at 350 degrees for 90 minutes.

Retro Fluff Salad

In a large bowl, mix together one 20-ounce can of crushed pineapple and juice, 1 small box of pistachio instant pudding, 1 cup of miniature marshmallows, and one 9-ounce container of whipped topping (frozen and thawed). Refrigerate until ready to serve. Nuts are optional. Add more whipped topping, if desired.

Quick Patio Mai Tais

In a large pitcher, pour a bottle of coconut rum, a bottle of prepared sweet and sour mix, and 8 ounces of pineapple juice. Add a splash of triple sec and a squirt of fresh lime juice. Add ice and stir. You can spritz this by adding club soda. Serve with extra pineapple slices or cherries. Adjust ratios as desired.

Grilled Cabbage Steaks

Wash 1 small head of cabbage and cut into 8 “steaks” (that is, thick slices). Place each one in a large aluminum pan or put them on a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Place squares of butter all over the cabbage. Seal the foil, or

put a foil cover over the aluminum pan. Grill over medium heat for 20 minutes, moving them around a bit. Open carefully. Salt and pepper as desired.

Barbecue Grill Surprise Packets

Take 2 pieces of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Spread 2 Tablespoons of barbecue sauce on each piece of the foil. Cut a chicken breast in half (horizontally). Put the chicken breast on top of the foil, adding salt and pepper as desired. Place a ring of onion on top and add more barbecue sauce. Seal up like a package. Grill for 20-30 minutes until done. You can use salmon instead of chicken, as well as adding fresh veggies. Be creative—it’s a surprise!

Fresh Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Mix together 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 2 Tablespoons of flour. Put 2 cups of rhubarb (cleaned and chopped) and 2 and 1/2 cups of strawberries (cleaned, trimmed, and sliced) into the bowl and mix. Sprinkle with 1 Tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Put the mixture into a pie crust and place strips of pastry over the top. Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Lower the heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Cherry Fudge Cake

Mix an 18-ounce box of devil’s food cake mix with 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, 3 eggs, 1/2 cup of water, 1 small can of cherry pie filling, and 1 cup of chocolate chips. Pour into a well-greased and floured tube or Bundt-style cake pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool and invert. Dust with powdered sugar or your favorite glaze. You can also serve with whipped cream and cherries and banana slices on the side.

Vacation Fashion at Home

Summer Vacation Inspiration!

One of the best things about vacationing is the anticipation! When you’re choosing which clothes to pack, a great rule of thumb is to keep it simple. It’s so refreshing to have easy, effortless pieces that work together. When dressing for your destination is quick and easy, you don’t have to spend precious minutes of your vacation deciding what to wear! Versatility is also important. Choose clothing that can be used in several ways, such as a pashmina scarf that can be used as a shoulder wrap in an air-conditioned environment as a bathing suit cover-up tied around your waist, or folded up for a pillow on your flight.

Tropical prints in vibrant colors are all about celebrating the natural beauty of the season. Vivid colors pack a punch, and exotic prints get you in the vacation mindset. Some gorgeous prints to choose from this year feature the lush greenery of the tropics or the vivid colors of the sunset. These prints are irresistible, whimsical reminders of escaping to paradise.

Your summer fashion lineup could definitely include a crocheted piece. Designers have been embracing the handcrafted art of crochet. The intricate beauty and design bridges the gap between tradition and modern-day fashion.

Fans of wearability (who isn’t?) are still celebrating the athleisure movement that began in earnest during the pandemic. High-performance fabrics and relaxed silhouettes are no-brainers for vacation wear.

The modern woman needs flexibility for her busy lifestyle, and that includes the need to look fashionable and still maintain comfort. Comfort has been at the forefront of fashion for the past few years and has inspired many wonderful wearable trends. A favorite is the long, flowy, breezy pant. In a linen blend, lightweight gauze, or cotton blend, this pant is a perfect go-to for vacation. Cool, packable, and versatile, baggy bottoms will be at the height of this summer’s fashion trends. One thing to keep in mind when putting this silhouette together is to wear a more form fitting top. There must be

some definition between the top and bottom, whether it is tucking the top in or belting a top for a flattering look.

I recently visited a store that featured all neutrals. Boring? Just the opposite! I wanted to put the entire store in my closet. There is something understated yet elegant about dressing in neutrals. It creates a vibe that is not only fresh but also sophisticated. Never out of fashion, neutrals are perfect for an elegant, cohesive vacation look. And what about white? White keeps you cool as it reflects sunlight and offers a fresh look that is always appropriate. You can’t go wrong packing a couple of white tees along with a white dress for your vacation. A few all-white pieces will set the stage for a wide range of looks.

Elegance, simplicity, and comfort describe another favorite for the season: the maxi dress. The maxi dress features a flowy silhouette in a lightweight fabric. This style offers a respite from the heat along with a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe.

People are often in a quandary about what accessories to bring on vacation. I recommend leaving your valuables at home. Choose a small gold band in place of your diamond wedding ring. Instead of heavy jewelry, choose a pair of gold loop earrings or a pair of white pearl studs.

10 July 2024 Fashion Worthy

An extra-large tote is both a functional necessity and a fashion statement. Perfect for the beach or for packing your must-haves for the journey, an oversized tote can handle it all. One hint is to include a tiny cross-body bag in your tote for those moments you prefer to not carry a heavy bag. That way, you can do a quick switch, bringing your essentials while leaving your large tote in the hotel room.

Summer vacation will be full of adventures and surprises. With this in mind, it’s wise to invest in a pair of cute and comfortable white sneakers. Perfectly acceptable with summer dresses, shorts, pants—really, any outfit looks cute with white sneaks. In the shoe department, a second necessity is a pair of comfortable walking sandals with good arch support. Choose a neutral color from the brown color palette. This works well with anything. I especially love footwear that is skin-toned, lengthening the leg. Finally, throw in a pair of waterproof flip-flops. You will be happy to have them at the pool or beach or just for stepping out of the shower.

This year’s summer resort wardrobe should capture a laid-back vibe while embracing your personal style. Happy vacation!

Chastain Otis

Client-Focused Insurance

After being burned once or twice, most of us have realized that one size does not fit all. Something made for the masses might be cheaper, but if it doesn’t meet your needs, it is a wasted expense. This is just as true for insurance as it is for everything else, but the client-focused team at Chastain Otis can craft a package just for you.

Chastain Otis is made up of independent insurance agents, customer service agents, and claims representatives. The insurance agents will help you create a personalized protection package that meets your needs. The customer service agents are dedicated to answering your questions and providing top-notch service. The claims reps strive to settle claims as quickly as possible without sacrificing your satisfaction.

This client-focused mission is one of the reasons that agent Shannon Norman joined the firm in 2019. After graduating from Dana College in Blair, this Nebraska native started her career in business development and finance. As time went on, she sought a new challenge, something to take her out of her comfort zone. “I transitioned to insurance on the corporate level, but I wanted to be able to offer my clients more options based on their needs. I found that mission, and a home, at Chastain Otis.”

This wife, mother, and community service leader loves working in a family-owned local business. “At Chastain Otis, you are never filtered to a call center,” Shannon notes. “We always answer our phone. Our agents are customer-focused and skilled at building relationships. Our in-house claim representatives work to settle your claims quickly.”

Chastain Otis is the result of two industry leaders, the Chastain Insurance Agency and the Otis Insurance Agency, joining together to offer clients personalized insurance protection. Chastain Insurance Agency was founded in 1953 by Dick Chastain, whose son Dave grew up in and around the business. After earning his business degree from the University of Nebraska in 1972, Dave joined the agency full-time. Dave’s son, Sean, is now one of the agents. The Otis Insurance Agency has been serving clients in the Omaha metro area since the 1930s. Don Otis graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1972 and devoted his career to this profession. He retired in 2013.

“Integrity—doing the right thing even when no one is watching—is the foundation of business, service, and life, and it’s what you’ll find at Chastain Otis,” Shannon attests. “We put clients at the forefront of everything we do, and we are hands-on with them. Your agent is your advocate and protects your best interests. We put together a package that is personalized for you. We don’t use a template or cookie-cutter approach.”

An important part of Shannon’s job is client education.

“Sometimes, a potential client tells me their neighbor has gotten a cheaper rate,” she says. “However, once we fully explore the client’s needs, it becomes clear that we aren’t comparing similar requirements.” Many people also do not realize that an independent insurance agency does not establish rates. “A national regulatory service sets rates, based on the market and other factors,” Shannon notes. “In the past few years, the volatility of the market has left very little wiggle room.” The good news is that Chastain Otis partners with a variety of insurance companies, so they can shop around and provide competitive prices.

One of the aspects of her job that Shannon treasures is the opportunity to develop relationships with her clients. “I enjoy knowing who I am doing business with! I monitor their coverage and look out for them. In return, they receive peace of mind because they know someone is watching out for them and their assets.”

One of her clients, Elie Ortiz, echoes these sentiments. “We met Shannon four years ago, and right off the bat we knew we made the right choice,” Elie shares. “For her, it wasn’t about the sale, it was about our needs. She is always available for the smallest of questions and makes sure we review our portfolio annually. Our family has an umbrella policy, insures two cars, and has homeowners insurance. During a recent storm, we had hail damage, and the firm made that claim process easy.”

Recently, Shannon was accepted into the Master’s program at the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business. She’s excited to begin courses in August. “I tell people to give themselves every opportunity to be successful,” she notes, “and this program will help me offer additional benefits to my insurance clients.”

Chastain Otis Insurance is located at 10822 Old Mill Road, Suite 2, in Omaha. You can call the office at 402-3972500, Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For more information, visit chastainotis.com.

Popular Legends

Fascinating Stories

If you have read my columns, you know I am curious and like to delve into the meaning of things, from Irish proverbs to superstitions. This month, I am going to explore the history of some common legends. A legend is a story from the past that is believed by many people but cannot be proven true.

Lady Godiva and the Peeping Tom

Lady Godiva was an 11th-century Anglo-Saxon woman and the wife of the ruler of Coventry, England. She loved her husband dearly but opposed the way he treated his people. When her husband issued a heavy tax on the local people, Lady Godiva begged him to stop this oppressive tax. According to the legend, Lady Godiva’s husband said he would only stop the tax if she rode through the streets of Coventry naked.

And so, she did, covering herself with only her hair. Lady Godiva was so highly respected that the entire city closed their windows while she rode by. (Later versions of the legend claim that this was at Lady Godiva’s request.) The only exception was a tailor, who peeped through a hole in his shutter. Legend says he was struck blind for this disrespect. The peeping tailor was allegedly named…Tom.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood is one of the most famous legendary characters of all time. Although his existence is not clearly verified, he is believed to be an Englishman from medieval times. In the 16th century, the idea of Robin Hood as a thief who stole from the

rich to give to the poor began to arise. Robin Hood became a noble symbol of resistance to tyranny.

The legendary Robin Hood had an enemy in the Sheriff of Nottingham, and later ballads paired him with a companion, Maid Marian. Countless novels and poems have been written about Robin Hood. In archery, when an archer shoots an arrow into the bullseye and then shoots another arrow perfectly into the first, it’s known as a Robin Hood.

The Fountain of Youth

This legend describes a fountain that contains water with unique powers: by drinking the water, a person gains eternal youth. American legends claim that the Fountain of Youth is somewhere in Florida, while European legends claim it is in Spain. The story of the Fountain of Youth is connected to the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who, the legend says, struck out in search of it.

Atlantis

It is believed that about 9,600 years ago, there was an island called Atlantis. The Ancient Greeks called this place a holy city and believed that it used to lie beyond the Pillars of

Hercules. The island was said to have sunk because it was defeated by Athens. A logical explanation of the matter is that an island sank due to submarine convulsions or volcanic eruptions. The matter of its existence and location has been under debate for centuries. Some believe that Atlantis was a metaphorical retelling of the story of the Minoans, who are believed to be Europe’s first great civilization more than 4,000 years ago.

Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary is one of the most popular ghosts in the world. Some say she was a widow who killed her children; others say she was a child who was murdered and is wandering around her grave. Still other tales say the ghost is Mary Worth, a purported witch who was burned at the stake.

The most important aspect of the legend of Bloody Mary is not the story of Mary herself but the ritual of summoning her. Folklorists have written about Bloody Mary rituals in the 1980s, describing them as seance-like events that usually involved candles, mirrors, and chanting an incantation to summon Bloody Mary.

King Arthur

King Arthur was a legendary British character thought to have lived during medieval times. He is believed to have led the defense of Britain against Saxon invaders during the early 6th century. Many theories about his identity have been proposed by scholars over the centuries, while others say he never existed.

The legend goes that Arthur was conceived by Uther Pendragon, who, with the assistance of the wizard Merlin, had used magic to deceive his enemy’s wife, whom he later married. A young Arthur succeeded his father to the throne, Excalibur in hand, and married Guinevere.

It wasn’t until the 12th century that King Arthur emerged as we know him today in History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth. Other 12th-century texts include tales of the chivalrous Knights of the Round Table and their adventures. Later French texts indicate that one of Arthur’s most beloved knights, Lancelot, was Queen Guinevere’s lover.

If you like a good story, explore some of our most popular legends. They will intrigue you.

Action Batteries Unlimited

Quality

for Less!

Gwyn Fuxa is proud to stock thousands of batteries and accessories for her retail and wholesale customers. In fact, the Chief Operating Officer of Action Batteries Unlimited says that customer satisfaction has been the top priority since the store opened in 1982. Her mission includes stocking every type of battery a customer might need—for a car, laptop, power tool, golf cart, cell phone, and more. How about a free installation for your new car battery? Gwyn’s reliable team of 10 will get you back in action in no time.

Gwyn can’t say enough good things about the team at Action Batteries Unlimited. “I have a great network, including some college students. I try to promote cohesiveness and kindness.” That must resonate with the team because they don’t seem to want to leave. “I have staff members who have been here 5, 15, and 42 years who are amazing!” says Gwyn. “The positive reviews we get from customers and watching the business grow has been great.”

Gwyn’s father-in-law owns Action Batteries Unlimited, and Gwyn runs the business, but it hasn’t been an easy path. When her oldest son was three, in 2008, Gwyn started working part-time at Action Batteries Unlimited because of the flexible hours. Her role was mostly accounting and some marketing, and her husband and partner was the electrical engineer and purchaser. Sadly, he passed away in 2021.

Although it’s still difficult to talk about, Gwyn’s husband is a constant in her memory as she now proudly fills both her own and her husband’s roles with the help of a few key staff members. “I couldn’t have done it without them. My father-in-law’s vision is to pass down the business through the family,” says Gwyn. She’ll expand when the time comes, and her two young boys think that is the coolest thing!

They have it all! And if they don’t have it on the shelf, they’ll order it right away.

If you’re stumped on what to buy, Gwyn encourages you to give Action Batteries Unlimited a call. “Many people don’t understand battery terminology and don’t know exactly what their vehicle may need. Call the people who have the knowledge…the people who do it every day.”

Customers rave about Action Batteries Unlimited. “The guys at Action Batteries are awesome,” says customer Chris. “I got my ACDelco AGM replaced under warranty. Good people, good prices, and they stand behind what they sell.”

With customer service and price setting them apart from the competition, the business has developed into every type of battery imaginable.

With an evolving stake in the business, Gwyn faces the same challenges that most businesses encounter, like training, time management, and marketing. She enjoys experienced help for marketing and social media as the business grows. “We have continued to grow substantially since COVID. The industry keeps changing!” Time management is a constant challenge as the business grows, but Gwyn refuses to raise prices any higher than is absolutely necessary. “We do not price-gouge,” she says. “We’re still about $100 cheaper, per battery, than a big box store.”

With customer service and price setting them apart from the competition, the business has developed into every type of battery imaginable. They sell new batteries for cars, ATVs, and motorcycles. They have batteries to back up your computer and your fire and security alarms. They have batteries for cell phones, digital cameras, and medical devices. They can power your floor-cleaning equipment or your golf cart.

“This is the place to go if you need a new car battery,” says Kristin. “The price is reasonable, they test your old battery, and the staff is friendly and helpful. I called ahead of time and gave them details. I was in and out in less than five minutes. Plus, their price beat everyone’s by $100. So, yeah, great place!”

It’s a great place, but it’s not perfect. Gwyn did recently face a humorous problem that a backup battery just couldn’t fix. “Our parking lot is two-tiered, and most of the staff parks in the lower tier,” she says. “There’s a pretty decent-sized hump leading up to the next level. We’d had a few people drive off it, so we installed bollards along the drop-off.”

“Well,” Gwyn continues, “one of our older customers, Margaret, came in a couple of weeks ago. She didn’t see the hump and high-centered her car. Help was, miraculously, on stand-by! A tow truck driver happened to drive through. He pulled her off, set her car down, and was on his way. Everything ended up okay, but Margaret said, ‘Gwyn, I hate your parking lot!’ It’s fixed now—no one can drive over that hump anymore.”

See for yourself at Action Batteries Unlimited, at 7911 J Street, in Omaha. They’ll have what you need…and if they don’t, they’ll get it fast! Learn more at actionbatteries.com.

Build Your Dream Home!

New Beginnings With Custom Homes

Building a custom home is an exhilarating journey—the chance to create your dream home from scratch. Before you bring your tailored vision to life, careful planning should be at the top of the list. Plan first, and then sit back and enjoy the sanctuary that you dreamed into being. Advantages to custom building include choosing your home’s location, materials quality, finishes, and functionality.

Go ahead and vibe out with your floor plan, but before you do, get your professional team together. Find a builder who will help articulate your plan and match your budget. An architect, interior designer, and landscape artist will guide your aesthetic vision and increase your home’s value. Let’s learn some things to help you along the journey!

Planning starts with a budget, and it should be based on the worst-case scenario. That means plan for the most expensive estimates so that you won’t go over budget. Now is the time to prioritize your needs and wants. That’s right—even your must-haves should be prioritized! If you can’t live without a walk-in closet or smart home technology, write it down. “Must have” more garage space? Write it in the plan.

Consider the layout you want, size, desired materials, finishes, flooring, and colors before you start. Changes are inevitable, but if you pay out of pocket, keep those receipts in a folder for later use. You can also opt to build a contingency fund for unexpected expenses. A common rule of thumb is to set aside another 10 to 20 percent of the anticipated project cost, just in case. Don’t forget the cost of the lot, if you don’t already own it. This can often be wrapped into the total cost, but be sure to ask before you sign a contract.

Once you sort out priorities, it’s time to start looking for a builder. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) says to shop for your builder as carefully as you shop for your home. Start by contacting your local homebuilders’ association for a list of local reputable builders. Another idea—real estate agents often have testimonials for great builders who they have worked with in the past. Once you’re considering a particular builder, always ask for references, read online testimonials, and ask to see homes previously built.

Experience counts, but so does level of customer service. Does your builder communicate well? Are they happy to provide documentation of their credentials? “A professional homebuilder will be able to provide you with a copy of their business license and show proof of their workers’ compensation and liability insurance,” says the NAHB. “These critical elements will protect you from liability for job site injuries or property damage resulting from the work performed on your home. Better business management means better service for homeowners because they can rely on the builder to perform with integrity.”You should also get a written estimate and detailed contract before the builder starts working.

Financing options usually start with a construction loan. This is a short-term loan during the construction phase. If your builder does not carry the construction loan, seek

financing through your local bank or credit union. In many cases, the lender or builder expects a 10 to 20 percent investment or down payment. Once the construction is completed, your lender (usually the bank or credit union who granted preapproval) will finance the end-loan or your actual mortgage to pay off the construction loan.

With a custom build, you have the ultimate approval for design. What would you (and your family) like in your custom home? Efficient kitchens with high-tech appliances are very popular this year, as are warm, neutral palettes.

If you’re not sure what your interior should look like, hire an interior designer to fine-tune your vision. Designers help save money without sacrificing style, artistry, or craftsmanship. This year, interiors lean toward classic simplicity, with more indoor plants, green walls, and natural stone or wood. Windows are larger, maximizing sunlight and reinforcing the trend of outdoor living, inside!

Don’t worry if current trends aren’t to your liking. Let your individuality shine through! For example, if clean lines and minimalist elegance aren’t your thing, go bold and vibrant. Bright orange, lively green, and vibrant blues are great colors for any room. Some designers say that maximalism can be just as tasteful as minimalism. If you love bold wallpaper, statement furniture, and walls saturated with art, go for it! After all, your custom home is being customized for you .

Upgrades are popular, and the luxury of spa-like bathrooms with steam showers and infrared saunas are all that this year. Timeless wood cabinetry can be brightened up with creative accents, and mixed metals combining texture and color create visual interest. Ask your designer for help with a cohesive look.

Exterior home design is trending toward darker neutrals this year, like slate siding and brick. The modern farmhouse is still highly popular, though the cottage look is also catching on.

Midcentury modern is one of the top trending styles in 2024, with contemporary architecture closely following. And don’t underestimate the quiet luxury of handmade clay tiles, brick, arches, and rustic wood.

When it comes to custom building, an architect is worth their weight in gold. An architect considers everything from the look of neighboring homes to site restrictions to how your landscape fits the house. They’ll design concept sketches, scoping out building elevations and detailing a floor plan proposal. An architect is the professional you want to safeguard the big hitters in your new home (that is, the structural,

20 July 2024 Fresh Concept

mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems). Much of an architect’s work is done before construction begins, but they generally stay on the project through completion. The average time to design and plan is about four months to a year, depending on your home’s size, style, and complexity. Once construction begins, expect to wait a year or two for completion.

Let’s talk landscaping! A contemporary blend of muted blues and purples is gracing many flower beds in 2024. Soft colors add a calm serenity to the outdoors. Eco-conscious gardens are still popular, adding edible plants, native plants, and sustainable gardening practices for wellness. Container gardens are favored, too, bringing vibrant color to patios and decks. Timeless nostalgia leads the pack, with roses, peonies, and hydrangeas at the top of the list. When it comes to the yard, you want your outdoor space to be somewhere that is vibrant and sustainable…somewhere that you can unwind from stress and nourish yourself.

The world of landscape continues to evolve in 2024, from sustainable landscaping to all-out luxury. Whatever your taste and budget dictates—timeless simplicity, moody Victorian, natural prairie, neon-tinged foliage erring on the side of scifi—a landscape architect can make it happen. Vertical gardens are climbing this year, adding visual interest and texture. Living walls improve air quality, block out noise pollution, and benefit birds and butterflies. Consider low-maintenance landscaping to reduce upkeep and suppress weeds. Adding gravel pathways creates whimsy and reduces mow time

Need Some Space to Call Your Own?

and watering.

It’s all about nature this year. Biophilic design fosters our deep connection with all things natural. Wood and stone water features, restorative garden experiences, and spaces that promote healing also promote peace. A landscape designer can help you choose species that will work well in your space, saving you time, money, and the heartache of a planting that fails to thrive. With their help, you can build a landscape that’s the envy of the neighborhood.

We all love relaxing outdoors, but don’t forget about the opportunity to entertain in your outdoor spaces. Ask your landscaper about outdoor entertainment zones. Plan an exotic outdoor kitchen with your builder. You might end up cooking outdoors more than indoors! Ask your team for ideas on gorgeous outdoor furniture, pergolas, arbors, and gazebos. Fireplaces, pizza ovens, built-in seating, and outdoor theaters are all worth the investment, welcoming all guests for a memorable night. Don’t forget to add outdoor speakers for music and dancing!

As you step into the warmer weather this year, plan your custom home with your expert team and blend innovation, sustainability, and your personal aesthetic. Inspiration is at your fingertips. It’s time to clean out the past, build memories today, and reap the benefits of your custom home’s increasing value tomorrow!

Premier Countertops

With You From Design to Installation

We spend a lot of time in our kitchens and bathrooms every day. Are you happy with yours, or do they need to be updated? You don’t have to do a full remodel to achieve a new look in the kitchen or bath. You can enjoy a fresh, beautiful appearance at a fraction of the cost by updating or repairing your countertops.

Premier Countertops provides both design and installation services for countertops, sinks, and backsplashes. They offer free estimates and measurements, as well as countertop protection and repair. Customers can choose from a wide array of styles and materials. Displays throughout the showroom allow customers to visualize different design options.

A native of Omaha, Lori Ludwick’s first exposure to business operations began at the young age of 12. Her family owned B&G Tasty Foods, where she worked until the business was sold in 1999. At that time, her husband Maurice “Mory” Ludwick was a construction contractor and had just bid on his first countertop job. He enjoyed the work, so he and Lori opened Premier Countertops that same year. They started small, offering solid-surface countertops like Corian, and continued to expand their products and services.

Premier customers may now choose natural stone, engineered stone, solid surface, or porcelain countertops. Natural stone includes granite, quartzite, and soapstone. Granite is durable and resistant to heat, acids, and scratches. Quartzite is stain- and scratch-resistant. Soapstone can handle heat and resist stains and acids.

geometric shapes, natural stone, and classic subway tiles.

Perhaps you like your countertops, but they are chipped, cracked, stained, or dull. Natural stone countertops can be sealed for protection and to restore shine. Premier Countertops offers a 15-year guarantee against stains. “If a stain will not come out, the company stands behind their product.”They can also repair chips in any stone. Technicians at Premier Countertops can assess damage and recommend the best and most affordable option to repair or refinish your countertop.

“Our reward is when people are happy and call back to say they love their new look.”

Lori’s customer service philosophy is straightforward. “We walk our customers through the process so they understand what will happen. Education is an integral part of the process and helps set expectations.”They also help customers put everything together, from design and selection to final installation. “If I wouldn’t accept something in my house, I will not put it in someone else’s home. We are not a big corporation that does not care. We are a family-oriented, local business whose dollars stay in Omaha.”

Quartz is an engineered stone that is durable, stain-resistant, and resistant to scratches and chips. Solid surfaces like Corian are non-porous and seamless in design. They are also durable and impenetrable to stains. Porcelain is non-porous and is resistant to etching, stains, and heat.

Premier has the flexibility to do custom work because it is locally owned and operated, Lori explains. “We can take the time to match veining so countertops look seamless, though you can still see seams in natural stone. Clients who desire a truly seamless look should choose a solid surface option.”

If you need a new sink, choose from stainless steel, granite composite, and vanity bowls. Solid surface options allow for an integrated sink and counter. The team can replace sinks, with some limitations. “If you are not replacing it with an identical sink, you must select a top mount or drop-in model,” Lori explains.

Backsplashes are a great way to add style and character. In addition to their visual appeal, they also protect walls from splatters and stains. Customers may select from countless colors, sizes, and styles of backsplash tiles, including mosaics,

It’s gratifying when people love the final product, Lora notes. “Our reward is when people are happy and call back to say they love their new look.” She was delighted to receive this feedback from client Ina, who recently had a home project completed by Premier Countertops. “We are very, very pleased with our new countertops and backsplash,” Ina says. “Thank you for helping us select the appropriate materials. They look great! And a special shout out to Mike H., who installed the backsplash. He was prompt, courteous, very professional, and kept a neat workspace. We just cannot say enough about him. He was great!”

For anyone thinking about replacing or repairing their countertops, Lori offers some advice. “Select someone who knows their products and can explain them. Make sure they take the time to help you choose the best product for your home.”That’s what you’ll get at Premier Countertops. “We’re here to help!”

Premier Countertops is located at 8720 L Street, in Omaha. The showroom is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can find them online at premiercountertops. com or call them at 402-991-7258.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

Restoring Balance

Do you find yourself suddenly drenched in sweat, thinking that nothing would feel better than finding a walk-in freezer? Perhaps you see that’s not an option, so you open your own freezer, spot a carton of ice cream, and dig in. Do you snap at friends, coworkers, or family members for no apparent reason? Are you happy one minute, then find yourself suddenly on the verge of tears? Do you wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat, or find yourself wide awake at 3:00 a.m.? Is your sex drive non-existent? Are you experiencing weight gain or loss? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your hormone levels may be out of whack. A hormone imbalance not only disrupts everyday life but can lead to significant health issues. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) may be able to help you feel like yourself again.

Hormones are powerful chemicals. Even a small imbalance can wreak havoc on the body, mentally, physically, or emotionally (or any combination of the three!). While a hormonal imbalance can affect people of any age or gender, the significant hormonal changes experienced by perimenopausal and menopausal women make them particularly susceptible to symptoms. It’s important to understand how hormones work and what their purpose is. Hormones control many bodily functions, including metabolism, blood pressure, blood sugar regulation, fluid balance, growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, sleep cycle, and mood. Hormone problems can cause diabetes, thyroid disease, cardiovascular disease, loss of bone density, and infertility. Hormone-related conditions can have multiple causes, such as menopause, tumors, autoimmune issues, injuries, and even stress. If you’re

experiencing any concerning symptoms, your healthcare provider can perform laboratory tests to check your hormone levels.

What are bioidentical hormones, and why should you try them? Bioidentical hormones are derived from plant sources, such as yams or soy, and are identical in structure to the hormones produced by the body. Advocates feel that these plant-based hormones are better absorbed than synthetic hormones and that they allow for more accurate monitoring of hormone levels. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are among those most commonly prescribed. Bioidentical hormones come in various formulations, including pills, patches, creams, gels, and injections. Some are available pre-packaged commercially, while others are custom-compounded. You may need to try more than one method to find the best solution for you.

Standardized BHRT is pre-packaged and contains hormones

approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Women are most often prescribed estrogen replacement therapy. Estrace and Alora are two frequently prescribed bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical progesterone, such as Prometrium, is often used in conjunction with estrogen therapy.

Compounded BHRT involves custom formulations mixed in a compounding pharmacy. They typically include a mixture of standard BHRT and non-hormonal ingredients. The formulation is based on the healthcare provider’s specific instructions.

Individuals on BHRT are closely monitored by their healthcare providers. The goals are to relieve symptoms with the lowest dose possible and to take them for the shortest amount of time necessary. Depending on your provider, you may have routine blood, urine, or saliva tests to check your hormone levels. Your provider may adjust your dose based on your changing hormone needs.

The amount of time it takes for bioidentical hormones to work varies. Some people may feel mild relief within a few weeks. Most of the time, it takes about three months to feel the full effects of any type of hormone therapy. Your doctor will monitor you closely to make sure your symptoms are alleviated. They may need to adjust the dose or delivery method for optimum results.

How long you stay on bioidentical hormones varies based on the type of hormone and your unique situation. For example, risk of adverse effects from systemic estrogen increases with age, and with prolonged use (that is, longer than 10 years). If your treatment stops working or you experience severe side effects, your healthcare provider may instruct you to discontinue hormone therapy.

BHRT is a very effective way to relieve many of the troublesome symptoms caused by low hormone levels. It can improve your overall quality of life by raising your energy levels, improving sleep quality, increasing libido, increasing levels of good cholesterol, alleviating depression and anxiety, and clearing up “brain fog.”You don’t have to accept these symptoms as part of the aging process. Not when BHRT can ease the journey into your golden years!

If you suspect you have a hormonal imbalance, don’t suffer in silence. Go see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and start the journey back to being your best self!

Kitchen Remodeling 2024

Tips for a Beautiful and Functional Space

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s the place you prepare your favorite meals, spend quality time with family, and entertain your closest friends. A well-designed kitchen makes life more enjoyable and makes meal-prep and cooking efficient and fun! Creating a space that will become the focus of family life and the center for social gatherings is well worth the investment of time, money, and effort, but the thought of going through a kitchen remodel may still seem daunting. The good news is that you can avoid being overwhelmed by fully understanding the steps that go into the process before you begin!

Step one in a kitchen remodel is defining the scope of your project. Are you planning some updates or a complete gut job? Going through this exercise helps frame your project and determine what fits into your budget. It also helps sort your wish list into a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves. The internet is a great place to find inspiration and gather ideas, if you don’t already have a clear design concept in mind. But don’t stop there! Visit showrooms to see the products in person. Take note of design layouts, appliances, fixtures, and materials. This will help you decide what you want to include in your design and what you can afford.

Ultimately, your kitchen is a reflection of how you live. When it comes to remodeling a kitchen, there are no hard and fast rules. Decisions on style and budget will depend upon what’s most important to you. There’s a lot to consider

when crafting your dream kitchen, from layout and cabinets to appliances. It’s very easy for costs to quickly escalate. Think about how you use your kitchen and prioritize putting your money there. A gourmet cook, for example, may wish to splurge on high-end appliances; a busy family might prefer to focus on storage, storage, and more storage!

In terms of kitchen trends, more and more homeowners are opting for open concept plans that remove any walls between the kitchen and the adjacent room. The open concept plan is popular because it allows for enhanced functionality and creates a seamless space for entertaining. The open concept also lends itself to larger islands where families and guests can gather.

White still leads the way when it comes to cabinet color trends. Consider a splash of color with nature-inspired

tones of blue and green or updated natural wood tones that look earthy and sophisticated. Also in high demand are appliances with high-tech capabilities that can be connected through Wi-Fi and controlled with a smartphone!

Without a doubt, installing new cabinetry is one of the most expensive components of a kitchen remodel. If you like your current layout and your cabinets are structurally sound, you might want to consider refacing your existing cabinets, instead. Refacing is when you leave your cabinet boxes as is but replace the doors, drawer fronts, and hardware. The goal of refacing cabinets is to completely transform and update the outer style. Cabinet refacing is typically less expensive than replacing cabinets. And because there is much less waste headed for the landfill, refacing is also the more eco-friendly option!

A good contractor is the key to a successful kitchen remodel. The right contractor will help make all the steps, from planning to budgeting to design, much easier. Whether you’re looking into contractors online or getting recommendations from friends and family, it’s a good idea to get at least three bids from qualified kitchen contractors before starting a project.

When it comes to setting a timeline for a kitchen remodel, count on two to three months. Kitchen remodels have a lot of moving parts. It takes time to coordinate electricians, plumbers, and other subcontractors, some of whom have to wait for one job to be completed before they can begin. (Lower cabinets, for example, must be installed before the sink can go in.)

An interior designer can lend an expert eye to your kitchen remodel, creating a unique space that perfectly meets your design aesthetic and needs. Interior designers are on top of trends and know the ins and outs of what’s involved in a remodel. They also are well versed in the important considerations when it comes to resale.

You also might need some guidance on the best cabinetry choices for your storage needs. A custom shelving company can optimize your storage space, suggesting clever solutions such as corner cabinets, pull-out drawers, and slide-out pantry units. The benefits these experts bring to your kitchen design can save you time, money, and stress in the long run!

Childhood Obesity

Should We Worry?

Many experts consider childhood obesity to be one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. This is a subject that comes with much controversy but can have serious health consequences. Excess weight brings the risk of conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease to people of any age, including children. Nutritional deficiencies are also commonplace in obese children. On the other hand, body shaming and a strict focus on weight can lead to eating disorders and low self-esteem. To understand this phenomenon and decide how to combat it, we must understand its causes and consequences.

The factors that lead to excessive weight are complicated and can include a person’s genetic makeup, lifestyle preferences, cultural environment, and access to healthy food. At its very core, weight gain is the result of taking in more calories than you expend. That means that things like excessive sugar intake, increased portion sizes, and lack of physical activity can all contribute to childhood obesity.

What constitutes obesity in children? Very basically, it can be defined as an excess of body fat—that is, a child who is significantly overweight for their height. It can be measured in terms of body mass index (BMI), though this measurement is only one part of a balanced workup.

BMI provides a guideline of weight in relation to height and is the medically accepted measure of being overweight or obese, though it is certainly not the only measure. Your child’s physician can use growth charts, BMI, family history, and other tests to

Are you struggling with fatigue and weight gain?

Hypothyroidism could be your problem.

determine if your child’s weight is giving rise to health problems. There are conflicting opinions on when parents should take note of developing obesity in their children. As children enter school, parents can watch for issues like shortness of breath without exertion, sleep apnea, knocked knees, and skin rashes. These can be symptoms of excess weight and should be brought to a pediatrician’s attention.

As mentioned previously, an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure is causing overweight children (and adults, for that matter). However, there is much evidence to indicate that an individual’s genetic background is also a determining factor.

No matter what your genetic background, sedentary behavior is a huge culprit in weight gain. It’s not hard to understand why children are likely to be more sedentary today than in past decades—you only have to observe the amount of time they spend

with their eyes glued to electronic devices instead of engaging in active play.

One sobering fact about childhood obesity is that its consequences can be both short-term and long-term. For instance, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are found more often in adults who were obese as children. These conditions can lead to heart disease or stroke. Bone and joint problems can rear their ugly heads in obese adolescents, along with respiratory problems, liver disease, sleep disorders, and even the early onset of puberty and menstruation. Research has revealed that obesity can cause permanent hormonal differences. The mental health effects of obesity can include low self-esteem and depression, especially if kids are victims of bullying.

What can we do, as adults, to help our children grow up healthy? The answer is simple, though not easy: Help them develop a healthy lifestyle! Encourage physical activity throughout the day (this includes limiting their time on electronic devices). Limit their portion sizes (don’t overserve them and then insist they clean their plates), and make sure healthy snacks are available at home. Develop a bedtime routine that ensures kids are getting enough sleep.

Don’t forget to be a good role model. Ride bikes with your children; go for walks with your grandkids. Play outdoor games with them and give them household chores to accomplish. Kids tend to imitate what they see, so make sure they see you eating healthy foods in sensible portions and engaging in regular physical activity.

Though childhood obesity can have serious consequences, another important fact is that children worry about “being fat” at an alarmingly young age. This cannot be overstated: Help children develop a healthy body image early! It is up to parents and other role models to make sure kids are not being shamed (or shaming others) about their body. Use positive language when you’re talking about bodies— even your own! When kids hear the adults they trust speaking negatively about their own bodies, they are likely to develop the same pattern of self-criticism. Keep the focus on healthy bodies, not the number on a scale. If you’re concerned about your child’s weight, talk to their pediatrician to see if steps need to be taken to protect their health.

Valle de Guadalupe

The Napa Valley of Mexico

For those of you who are oenophiles, I know you are already planning to head to wine country for the stomping of the grapes and other harvest festivals. Have you considered Baja? That’s right—Baja California, Mexico. Many have not heard of the amazing wine valley just south of the border: Valle de Guadalupe. For those who want to visit the next up-andcoming wine scene, it’s well worth the two-hour drive from San Diego.

If you don’t want to drive across the border yourself, choose another way to get to Valle de Guadalupe. You can fly into Tijuana directly or make it an excursion from the Ensenada port on your next Mexican cruise. From there, you can rent a car, hop on a bus, or car-share your way through the 14mile Ruta del Vino. Better yet, contact your travel agent and have them book you a wine tour that leaves out of San Diego. Your agent will take care of everything!

What does the Valle de Guadalupe wine region have to offer? Well over a hundred wineries, with everything from Cabernet to Syrah and lesser-known varieties like Vermentino and Nebbiolo. Considered the Napa Valley of Mexico, this area produces most of Mexico’s wine. Valle de Guadalupe is located just northeast of Ensenada and manages to feel rugged, relaxed, and sophisticated—all at the same time. The vineyards are set back just far enough from the Pacific Ocean that the region is hot and dry but gets a cool ocean breeze in the evenings. It is the perfect Mediterranean-like climate for growing grapes.

oramic valley views? The Valle de Guadalupe offers lodging options for all budgets and tastes.

Are you in it to find your next favorite Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Zinfandel, or Cabernet? These are just a few among the varieties found in Valle de Guadalupe. You can also enjoy Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Malbec, Barbera, Grenache, and Merlot. There really is something for everyone.

You will become a pro at using the five S’s of wine tasting: see, swirl, sniff, sip, and savor.

Realistically, it is typical to only visit three to four wineries per day. How will you decide which ones to visit? Will you explore based on grape variety, locale, or brand? Are you the type to decide on a whim as you drive past? Personally, I love to do pairings of food and wine or wine and chocolate, so I choose at least two of the wineries based on the locations that offer pairings in a scenic setting or buzzing atmosphere.

Production in Valle de Guadalupe is not solely Mexican wine. As far back as the 1700s, immigrants from Russia, Italy, and other European countries settled in the area with their own grape varieties and took advantage of the rich soil. Make a stop at the Museum of Vine and Wine and learn all about the history, culture, and industry of this fascinating wine region.

The area has boomed in the past several decades, transforming it into a paradise for people who love wine and food. Choose from among large and small commercial vineyards as well as boutique and artisan winemakers. You can even stop to buy bottles from vendors on the side of the road! Couple your tours and tastings with some outstanding restaurants— did I mention the fresh local seafood?—and you are in for a fantastic trip.

You’ll find fascinating lodging options here. Would you like to experience something like a B&B at a vineyard? Or unique architecture like a room built out of a cave with pan -

You will have to do some exploring to find what you like. When you do find something you love, stock up! Mexico does not export much of its wine, so if you like it, buy it. Taking photos of wine bottle labels for future reference is helpful, too.

When you come back for your second visit, make sure to book it during the annual Fiestas de la Vendimia Valle de Guadalupe (harvest festival) that runs late July through August. Here, you will experience the largest wine festivals in Latin America, where local wineries, internationally renowned chefs, and the most prestigious restaurants in Mexico meet. You will become a pro at using the five S’s of wine tasting: see, swirl, sniff, sip, and savor.

One thing that I have learned when it comes to wine is that no one should tell you what you should like. That is for you to personally decide. Everyone’s tastes are different, and what one person loves, another may not. When you visit Valle de Guadalupe, follow the signs and take an adventurous offroad path to discover your next new favorite vineyard!

Good News About Hearing Loss

Latest Diagnostics and Solutions

Good hearing is a most valuable asset for our health and quality of life. We know how vital good hearing is for a child’s learning. It is equally important for the safety and well-being of older adults. Fortunately, we have new and better ways of diagnosing hearing issues and improved technology to compensate for loss.

Causes of hearing loss are many, including injury to the inner ear, loud noises, damaged nerve fibers, and aging. About one in three people between 65 and 74 years have diminished hearing. Nearly half of those over 75 have difficulty hearing.

Poor hearing can make it difficult to understand directions or advice from healthcare providers. Warnings such as tornado sirens, smoke alarms, doorbells, or car horns may go unnoticed. One might not hear a pot boiling over on the stove or water left running. Difficulty conversing with others can result in feelings of isolation.

There is no need to suffer! If someone is constantly saying, “What?” or turning the TV volume way up, it may be time to have a primary care physician do a physical exam to rule out wax or other issues blocking sound. A brief screening test can be ordered. Testing only takes a few minutes. If screening shows diminished hearing, a full evaluation is likely in order.

Hearing loss can affect quality of life in so many ways, from strained relationships to withdrawal from previously enjoyable activities. If neglected, the loss is believed to negatively affect speech comprehension, compounding the difficulties of

participating in conversations.

Many healthcare providers can perform audio screenings, but advanced hearing tests and evaluation should be done by an audiologist. These healthcare professionals are trained to diagnose and treat hearing, balance, and related issues. They can recommend protective devices to prevent further hearing loss from excessive noise, and they can provide and fit hearing devices.

Beyond screening, advanced tests can determine whether hearing loss is due to problems with sensory cells or speech comprehension issues. They can determine whether connections between inner ear and brain are normal and can check the condition of the ear drum. Your audiologist will determine the type of loss and the degree of loss. It may be mild, moderate, or severe.

Greatly improved hearing aids are available to compensate for mild to moderate hearing loss. They can be worn outside the ear, in the bowl of the ear, or in the ear canal. Think of the components as a microphone that receives sound, an amplifier to strengthen the sound, and a speaker to produce the amplified sound in the ear.

A good hearing aid is adjusted to one’s specific loss frequency. They can be programed to individual needs, specifically to soft, medium, and loud sounds. If hearing loss occurs in both ears (as is often the case with age-related hearing loss), two hearing aids may be recommended.

The latest hearing aid technology includes smaller, more comfortable devices and clearer sounds. Wireless connectivity and Bluetooth-compatible features enable use with smartphones and other devices.

The cost of testing and treatment may be covered by insurance but varies greatly. It is best to check with your provider. Your hearing specialist may also be able to determine your coverage.

Hearing aids amplify sound, which is a common solution for hearing loss. Cochlear implants work in a different way, improving clarity. When those with severe to profound hearing loss do not benefit from conventional hearing aids, they may be eligible for a cochlear implant.

When impaired hair cells in the inner ear are the cause of severe hearing loss, the cochlear device assumes the function of those damaged cells, sending electrical signals to the brain. Popular devices consist of an external processor and an implant placed under the skin with electrodes that go into the inner ear. This device requires outpatient surgery that takes 2-4 hours under general anesthesia. Testing determines if one is a candidate for the surgery, and insurance approval is necessary for the cost to be covered.

Those of us with relatively good hearing should still get tested, since impairment may be so gradual that we don’t notice it. Testing every 10 years is recommended for those under 50, and every three years after that.

Anyone can experience exposure to loud noises that could result in hearing loss. If hair cells in the inner ear are damaged, they do not regenerate. To prevent damage, wear earplugs or noise-canceling headphones in certain situations like loud concerts. For operating loud equipment, specially designed earmuffs may be in order. I always take my earplugs to the stadium for football games. My hearing is too valuable to neglect!

Cats Make Great Pets

The cat’s pajamas may have been hung out to dry, but four-legged felines are more popular than ever. Since ancient times, when cats were worshipped and given divine status, cats have been the big cheese all around the world. Cats are everywhere, roaming every continent except Antarctica. They have adapted to thrive in a wide variety of habitats, from tropical rainforests to deserts and mountain ranges, from sprawling rural land to concrete-laden urban centers. Both domesticated and wild cats live in all corners of the world. They enjoy all sorts of living quarters and cuisine, and they are always in charge. As they say,“dogs have owners; cats have staff.”

One thing that people seem to love about cats is that cats are, well, weird. Internet and feline fanciers have many theories about cats’ odd actions. Fear of cucumbers is well documented. The theory? Cucumbers resemble snakes. I have never seen a slithering cuke, but you get the idea. If you have a cat, test the theory yourself! Set a cucumber on the floor behind your cat and see how it reacts (the cat, that is, not the cucumber).

Not all cats are aloof or grumpy cat types, but many would not condescend to a leash. On the other hand, some cats enjoy a tethered stroll. One of my neighbors walks her cat outdoors by setting the cat on her shoulder. This is a ragdoll cat, one of the largest domestic breeds. I have cared for many dogs, and they all shrink from this neighborhood feline.

This is not to say that cats are disobedient, per se. They are simply…discerning. They will accept training for a skill or art that they have decided they want to learn. If not, your efforts are for naught. Tabby strolls off, tail flicking, leaving you holding the treat.

While more American homes have dogs, it’s common to have just one dog. Lots of households with cats have multiple cats. Many cats adapt well to feline roommates, though it can take months for them to settle into a relationship. In some cases, they just don’t take to each other. As long as they don’t fight when they meet, they may well be content to just ignore each other.

The seven most popular breeds of cats are purebreds, and the most popular are among the largest. The Ragdoll is number one. With luxurious long hair, this breed is typically playful, smart, and friendly. The second most popular breed, the Maine Coon, is a sociable chatterbox distinguished by its large ears.

The Devon Rex is often companionable with dogs and other cats. This smart breed has short, wavy hair and is considered to be somewhat hypoallergenic. The exotic shorthair is a Persian-like breed but with short hair and no tail. The

pure Persian may look grumpy, but it is not really angry. (At least, not necessarily.)

The British shorthair has a thick body and broad face. Its pineapple-colored eyes are stunning. The seventh most popular breed, the Abyssinian, is curious, playful, sensible, loyal, and intelligent.

The eighth most popular cat is non-pedigreed. The Tabby is known for its distinctive coat with faint stripes. They are affectionate, vocal, and playful enough to star on YouTube.

The Scottish Fold, number nine, is affectionate, adaptable, and placid. This one goes along and gets along. It gets its name from a gene mutation that affects its cartilage, causing its ears to fold down toward the head. Last on the Top Ten list is the Sphinx, a cat developed by selective breeding to be hairless. It is a good pet and a good choice for allergy sufferers.

An important consideration for all cat owners is whether or not to have your cat altered (that is, neutered or spayed). Veterinarians recommend this procedure for all cats. Millions of stray cats are euthanized annually, so the population is clearly out of control! There is no benefit to letting your cat have a litter before she is spayed, and some nations actually have laws requiring that non-breeding cats must be spayed. There are health benefits for spaying cats at six months. This protects her against breast and uterine cancer and uterine infections.

By law, all cats must be vaccinated against rabies. If you ignore this requirement, you may be refused service at kennels, be required to pay a fine, or even have your animal confiscated. All cats should also be vaccinated against feline rhinotracheitis, pneumonia, feline calicivirus, and panleukopenia. These are highly contagious, potentially fatal diseases. Your vet can tell you more about required and recommended vaccines for a healthy cat.

The Internet Investors

They’re Not Walking on Wall Street

The April 22, 2024, edition of the Wall Street Journal included an article with a bold headline. “JP Morgan’s closing of their branch at 45 Wall Street marks the end of an era.”Subheading?“Wall Street is no longer the epicenter of the world of finance.”In support of their position, the paper quoted Peter Tuchman, the iconic, Einstein-lookalike NYSE trader, who said,“The legacy brokerage firms, and their way of doing business, disappeared years ago.”

The term “Wall Street” is essentially a synonym for the vast and powerful American financial services industry. This includes the traditional Wall Street brokerage firms, their associated mutual fund companies, the New York Stock Exchange, and the financial media that support them. It also includes the business model and culture that have dominated our financial markets for over two centuries.

There are two components to the Wall Street business model. First, in order to buy or sell stocks, you must go through them and pay their fee. Second, their ability to manage money far exceeds anything that mere mortals can achieve.

In addition to their business model, there is a cultural component that says they are entitled to a lifestyle that reflects their elite status. To reflect this notion, they build opulent offices, drive luxury cars, and enjoy company-sponsored vacations.

This view of the world of high finance operated unopposed from 1789 until 1975, when two men came along to challenge it. They were Joe Ricketts and Jack Bogle. Success did not come overnight to either man. Their efforts to chip away at Wall Street’s monopoly have taken five decades to reach maturity.

Joe Ricketts developed a pathway around Wall Street’s toll gate to the exchanges. In order to accomplish this tall task, he first had to employ the technology that would allow computers to take the place of human order takers. Fortunately for Ricketts, Apple and Microsoft were gaining momentum at the same time, making the technology more accessible and affordable. His second hurdle was even greater. He had to overcome the regulatory road blocks that helped keep Wall Street at the center of the investment process.

Jack Bogle’s contribution to financial transformation was the development of an investment vehicle that challenged Wall Street’s money management model. He created and marketed an index mutual fund that eliminated the role of the portfolio manager by simply replicating the market. The passive nature of an index fund makes it possible for individual investors to manage their accounts unassisted by a broker and unfettered by the broker’s fee structure.

Initially, Bogle and Ricketts struggled to gain traction. Then, an obscure change in the tax code led to the ability of ordinary citizens to accumulate stocks to fund their golden years. It took decades, but we went from less than 3 percent of the population owning stocks to 60 percent of American families owning stocks. The initial element of this program

was the 401(k). It has since been overshaded by the rollover IRA plan that followed it. Both programs allow, and in some cases require, individual investors to make their own investment decisions.

The ever-changing nature of the financial services industry has led to significant change in the investing landscape. At one time, Wall Street was the sole source of investment services. Today, 70 million Americans, with $17 trillion in investable assets, rely on their own resources to manage their investments in an effective and cost-efficient fashion. These Americans are known as The Internet Investors.

Internet investors are ordinary citizens who are skeptical about the wisdom of the legacy Wall Street firms and their media enablers. They have developed their own paradigm of how the stock market functions. They recognize that, in today’s internet world and electronic markets, stock picking has become significantly less practical. They rely heavily on both index funds and actively managed mutual funds. Mobile phones and the internet are integral parts of their daily lives, so managing their own portfolios over the internet comes naturally to them.

Investing is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. While Wall Street may not hold the dominant position it once held, reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated. Wall Street is not the powerhouse it once was, but there are still those who remain loyal to its legacy firms and paradigm. Nothing wrong with that. Many investors lack the temperament or desire to go it alone. For them, Wall Street remains the option of choice.

History tells us that change will not stop here. Before long, we will be writing the next chapter in the story of The Internet Investor.

Editor’s Note: George Morgan has five decades’ experience in all phases of the investment process. He is currently the Founder and Principal of Morgan Investor Education. His website is morganinvestoreducation.com.

A Blossom of Remembrance

The Fascinating Poppy

The beautiful and exquisite poppy has been a symbol of remembrance for more than 100 years. The poppy became a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future in the aftermath of World War I. To this day, people wear poppies to show support for the service and sacrifice of Armed Forces members, veterans, and their families. Personally, I have been fascinated with the flower for years. I am trying to cultivate my own poppy field. The intricate blooms are simply amazing!

Another incredible fact about poppies is that some species were a source of opium, a drug that induced sleep. In the Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch put Dorothy, Toto, and the Cowardly Lion to sleep using a field of poppies. Glenda, the Good Witch, then killed the poppies by making it snow on them. California poppies were likely used for the movie, but their time on the silver screen is not all they’re known for! California poppies have historically been used in folk medicine and made in tinctures or supplements. In high doses, the California poppy can help with pain relief, relaxation, and sleep enhancement. The California poppy is a beloved symbol of the Golden State and represents its history and natural beauty. California poppies easily self-seed from the long, slender pods they develop. When the seeds are ripe, the pods pop open and can send seeds flying up to six feet away. Each pod can bear up to 100 seeds!

“Our

There are so many interesting facts about these flowers. Poppies sprang up by the thousands on Flanders fields after the fighting had ceased in World War I. As it turned out, the lime in the fragmented masonry left behind after artillery bombardments was a great fertilizer for poppies.

In the 19th century, British horticulturalists observed a booming opium trade in the United Kingdom and saw a business opportunity. They attempted to establish a local crop of opium poppies. Unfortunately, a veritable plague of hares ate their entire crop. (One can only wonder if all the rabbits fell asleep after such a feast.) Another fact about poppies is that morphine is created from the milky latex in the seed head of the opium poppy. Believe it or not, the poppy is featured on the Royal College of Anesthetists coat of arms.

Because of the opiate traces that can be found in poppy seeds, and because of the potential for the seeds to be used to

grow opium poppies, they are banned as food or food ingredients in China, Taiwan, and Singapore. And though a poppy seed muffin does not contain enough opiates to intoxicate you, eating one can definitely result in a failed drug test.

There are about 250 species of poppy. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors today to suit different gardens and planting styles. Poppies do a magnificent job of attracting beneficial pollinators. Because of the intricate, wide-open construction of poppies, butterflies and bees have easy access to their pollen. Horticulturists advise against planting poppies near cruciferous vegetables. Poppies prefer drier soils than vegetable gardens and can sometimes be subject to powdery mildew, which can easily spread to the vegetables.

If you love brightly colored, cheerful flowers, poppies are a must for your garden. Poppies have a long blooming time, producing gorgeous, vividly colored flowers week after week. The fact that they re-seed themselves is a giant bonus! Despite their delicate appearance, poppy plants and their flowers are sturdy and resilient. They are considered drought-tolerant and can even thrive in sandy and rocky soil.

Poppies are one of the easiest plants I have ever grown. They do not like to be fussed over, they don’t like lots of watering, and again, I must mention the self-seeding…brilliant! This is where I offer some words of caution, however. If the flower is ingested, it is very toxic. If your dog or cat ingests this plant, you need to contact your veterinarian immediately. Consequently, I only plant poppies in my front yard, since my dogs are never out in the front. Keep the neighborhood pets in mind when you’re choosing where to plant these beautiful blooms.

The colors that poppies come in are outstanding. They include rich crimson red, coral orange, yellow, peach, pink, lavender, white, and even blue. The rarest poppy color is the blue one. It is the most rare in the world and is known as the Himalayan poppy. The plant is native to Tibet, where the soil acidity and weather conditions are perfect for its lovely hue.

If you want an easy plant with stunning blooms, consider the beautiful poppy for your garden.

Specialty Dental Care

Welcoming Dr. Shakeel Khan

We’re all generally familiar with the services that dentists provide to their patients. In addition to regular cleanings, x-rays, polishing, and basic dental health check-ups, dentists can perform root canals, fill cavities, perform standard tooth extractions, and apply crowns and bridges. But what if you need more oral care than a dentist can provide?

If you have swollen, bleeding, or tender gums, your dentist will probably refer you to a periodontist. A periodontist can do a deep pocket cleaning to help combat some of that gum disease. They can also do hard tissue recontouring, bone grafting, and soft tissue removal. They can address many other significant problems that go beyond the skills and training of a standard dentist.

If you find yourself in need of periodontal care, consider visiting Specialty Dental Care. Speaking as a former “dental coward,” I can tell you that I understand the apprehension that serious dental procedures may bring. At Specialty Dental Care, they recognize this anxiety and do everything they can to eliminate it. The frankly remarkable team at Specialty Dental Care goes above and beyond when it comes to patient care. They interact and create meaningful relationships with each person who visits the practice. This, in turn, creates confidence, lowers stress, and increases relaxation for patients.

Upon entering the office lobby, you will be greeted by staff members who clearly love what they do. They are glad to see you and welcome you with warm smiles and confidence. This confidence helps relax you as you take a seat in their waiting room. The atmosphere of teamwork they’ve created is very self-assuring for all who enter their door.

Dr. Timothy McVaney has been in this business for 48 years, and he has been passionately providing excellent periodontal care, customer care, and aftercare for his patients. Dr. McVaney is extraordinary at breaking down and explaining each step of care for each of the many patients he has seen over the years.

Now, with a great deal of pride and joy, it is his honor to welcome another periodontist to his staff. Dr. Shakeel Khan comes to the clinic from a family centered on patient care. His father is a urologist and his mother a dentist. Additionally, his three siblings are all in the profession.

Dr. Khan earned his dental license and then accomplished a three-year residency in Florida. Although he loved the Florida weather, he came back to Nebraska to be with and serve the people of his hometown, Omaha. In addition to being the inspiring periodontist that he is, he also teaches third- and fourth-year dental students at Creighton University Dental School Clinic.

Something delightful that I observed while talking with Dr. McVaney and Dr. Khan is their camaraderie. They have a

great respect for each other and appreciate each other’s work ethic, and they are very open to learning from each other. This mutually beneficial relationship enriches both their individual and collaborative work...and that, in turn, enriches the experience for their patients. These two skillful doctors appear to enjoy learning from each other.

Though new to the practice, Dr. Khan is developing quite a following. And it’s no wonder, since he gets such satisfaction from creating meaningful relationships with his patients. “I love interacting with my patients and seeing their joyous smiles after their treatments.” Just another thing that he and Dr. McVaney have in common!

Dr. Khan brings some wonderful new innovations to the table, with many different solutions for patients with gum disease. What kind of treatment is available for gum disease? Medication can help combat infection. There is also a treatment known as scaling, which consists of a careful and thorough cleaning of the root surfaces for each tooth. This can remove the plaque and tartar, as well as the bacteria that are likely present. This careful treatment can ultimately clear up symptoms of periodontal disease.

Sometimes, with advanced periodontitis, the bone is being destroyed, causing teeth to become loose. Treatment may include tooth removal and replacement. Dental implants are surgically positioned into the jawbone, fusing with the bone for a permanent solution. They are then capped with crowns that are nearly indistinguishable from natural teeth. The color of the crowns can be matched precisely to your existing healthy teeth. It’s a much more desirable option than traditional dentures! Dental implants are built to last.

No one really looks forward to hearing the words, “You need to make an appointment with a periodontist.” However, if that’s your situation, make the very best of it by visiting Dr. Tim McVaney and Dr. Shakeel Khan at Specialty Dental Care, at 12242 K Plaza, #113. These dentists will bring your smile back! Call 402-334-8083 or request an appointment at omahaspecialtydental.com.

Wrestling With Pigs

Don’t Take the Bait!

“When someone comes looking for the old you, pulling old triggers, but cannot find you—that’s healing.” —Anonymous

We all have people in our lives who know just what buttons to push to get us all riled up. Perhaps it’s a coworker, a friend, a relative, or a customer. They know just what to say or do to raise our blood pressure. Before we know what has happened, we feel incredibly defensive and are in a heated argument that they planned and that we know will not end well.

“Defensiveness its usually someone silently screaming that they need you to value and respect them in disguise.”—Sharon Alder

In our gut, we all know that we should not allow other people to disrespect us. It is not healthy. So we fight back…we argue… we try to make our point…we want to prove to them that we are right, and they are wrong.

“Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.”

—George Bernard Shaw

What I have discovered over the years is that some people simply enjoy these confrontations. They like stirring the pot, they get self-satisfaction out of these interactions. They want you to feel as insignificant and small as possible. What are they

looking to gain? Power, manipulation, and control…of your emotions, your attitude, and your relationship with them. They want to be the dominant one. What to do?

“Life does not have a remote. Get up and change it yourself.” — Anonymous

We all have to realize that the only person you can change is yourself. Perhaps the best thing to do is to cut people like this out of your life—permanently. Do you really have to put up with this abuse?

“The only way to win with a toxic person is to not play.” — Unknown

Of course, there are relationships where this is not possible. So what then? Remain calm, cool, collected, and stoic…in your words and in your body language. Set boundaries by expressing that you will not continue the conversation if the yelling, interruptions, and finger pointing continue. If they do not stop, tell them that you are going to walk away. And then do it. Do not engage. Do not take the bait. Don’t wrestle with that pig.

“Negative energy is always fishing for more negativity. You have a choice to not take the bait.” —Doreen Virtue

Proactive Sun Protection

Protect Your Home from UV Rays

One of the biggest investments we will make in our lifetime is our home. The purchase takes careful thought and preparation. Just as important, though perhaps less thrilling, is to do everything in our power to maintain its condition and keep it safe. You may have a long list of home maintenance needs, but have you considered sun protection?

Did you know that ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage your home? UV rays are very high-energy and are not visible to the human eye. The damage they can cause to skin is well documented. They can cause similar damage to the interior and exterior of your home.

Sun damage can lead to melted siding, damaged roof tiles, faded furniture and flooring, increased energy costs, and potential health risks. Ever had a carpet’s color fade or a photograph lose its luster? Chances are you couldn’t pinpoint when it happened or why, but if it spent its time in direct sunlight, the culprit was probably UV energy.

Some well-known ways to avoid sun damage to your skin are to seek out the shade, wear sun-protective clothing, and apply a generous layer of sunscreen before spending a day in the sun. There are some similar steps you can take to maintain your home’s value and mitigate damage from the sun’s harmful rays. They include installing protective window treatments, applying UV-protective coatings, using awnings and shade structures, implementing landscape strategies, using the right materials, installing proper flooring, and using colors and fabrics that are resistant to fading.

There are many benefits to natural lighting, but we all need a break from the sun. To mitigate sun damage to your interior surfaces, consider installing protective window treatments such as UV-blocking films, solar shades, or window tinting. These options can also help prevent your home from getting extremely hot. Consider using curtains or blinds during peak sunlight.

There are UV-protective coatings that can be applied to surfaces such as your roof, siding, and outdoor furniture. These work by acting as a barrier that protects against UV rays, increasing the longevity of the protected surfaces. Strategic placement of awnings and shade structures can significantly reduce sun exposure and protect your home’s exterior. Awnings can be installed over windows, doors, and outdoor living areas, creating shade and preventing direct sunlight from entering your home.

You can also reduce the direct and indirect sunlight on the exterior of your home by planting shade-producing trees and shrubs. Trees planted near windows and sun-facing walls will provide shade during the heat of summer but still allow some

sun exposure during the cooler seasons. Seek advice from a professional landscaper to help plan your efforts. It’s important to plant trees the correct distance from your home’s foundation.

Look for siding materials with a high UV resistance; they are less likely to warp in the heat. Lighter colors like tan or white help keep the exterior of your home cooler than darker shades that absorb more light.

Hardwood flooring can be expensive and is prone to fading in areas exposed to direct sunlight. Uneven fading can leave some parts of your hardwood floors looking old and worn. The simplest solution is, of course, putting down a rug. If you want to keep your flooring visible, prevent fading by treating floors in sunlit areas with special stains.

When it comes to upholstered furniture, you can choose fabrics and colors that are more resistant to fading. Buying furniture that is upholstered in a light-colored fabric makes fading less noticeable. Look for synthetic blends, as cotton fabrics generally fade faster than nylon or polyester. For things you already own, consider UV-repelling sprays.

Consider what type of furniture to buy and where to put it. A metal chair, for example, won’t fade in the sun the same way a dark wooden chair might. Try to place more delicate items out of direct sunlight to reduce the chance of fading and damage.

Whether it’s an expensive oil painting, a framed vacation photo, or a picture drawn by your child, the artwork in your home is also susceptible to fading. For framed art, consider replacing the glass with museum-grade conservation glass or UV-blocking acrylic. You can also treat artwork on canvas with archival protection sprays.

Your home is one of your largest assets, and taking care of it is a crucial part of maintaining its longevity and value. Protecting your home from sun damage is a proactive investment. Invest in protecting your home the same way you invest in protecting your skin. You’ll appreciate the results.

Seven Grandfathers

Learning and Teaching By Example

One of the most difficult tasks I have is sorting through boxes of old stuff. I can’t just look at a few things and then make the decision to toss the whole box. I must look through… and sometimes read…everything in that box. Recently, I was going through a box of old magazines. Many of these were publications from the Smithsonian and National Parks that I kept partially for the pictures (I used them to give kids inspiration for writing a story) but also for some of the articles.

That’s how I came across an article on the foundations of North American indigenous belief systems. It outlined the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers…a set of beliefs passed, many in the oral tradition, from generation to generation, forming the guiding principles necessary to maintain a harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the divine. As I scanned through the article, I recognized many subjects I’ve written about in this column.

COURAGE: Let nothing stand in the way of doing the right thing.

HONESTY: Better to fail with honesty than to succeed by fraud.

HUMILITY: To be humble about your accomplishments is to be strong.

LOVE: It is important to care for one another.

RESPECT: Give it, earn it, receive it.

TRUTH: It’s always easiest to speak the truth.

WISDOM: Through hard work and dedication will come knowledge.

Those few lines are a summary of the article. Because they are all important, I have presented the seven teachings in alphabetical order. Because these teachings are not separable, I would add another, with my own thoughts.

FREEDOM: Freedom gives us the courage and strength of character to overcome obstacles and face our fears.

With freedom, we can emphasize honesty, which entails truth, trust, and loyalty. We need the freedom of humility to recognize that we are all interconnected, thus encouraging us to help others when possible. The freedom to love our fellow humans encompasses compassion and kindness toward others. Respect gives us the freedom to acknowledge the value and worth of all living things. With truth comes the freedom of understanding the reality of our place in the world. It allows us to be open-minded and to question our beliefs when necessary. With wisdom comes the freedom to seek knowledge and learn from our mistakes.

When these teachings are considered as a whole and their connections are recognized, a holistic approach to life is revealed, centered around the entirety of humanity. In the words of John Donne, “No man is an island.”

I’ve said it before, but I think it bears repeating. We, as parents, are the first teachers our children have. I believe they learn more from our actions than from our words. It’s up to us to set an example. Now I’m back to sorting through boxes… and setting a better example for my kids.

Summertime Driving Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Cool

Ah, the lazy, hazy days of summer. They’re great for relaxing by the pool and enjoying a cold beverage so you don’t overheat…until you have to get back into your vehicle. When it is a scorcher outside, getting into your vehicle is about as unpleasant as it gets.Your sweltering car interior is full of harsh hazards! I am talking about things like searing seatbelt buckles, sizzling leather seats, the steaming steering wheel, and the delightfully sweltering gearshift. Everything is too hot to touch!

Luckily, there are a lot of things you can do to keep your vehicle cool through the long hot summer. Let’s start with the most obvious: shade. When you are going to work or running errands, make sure to park your car in the shade or in a parking garage. The mere fact that the sun is not directly beating down on your car, turning it into a raging inferno, is a win.

A windshield sun shade is a wonderful item in the summer. Granted, it is not the most attractive vehicle accessory, but it sure helps to keep a parked car cool, especially when parking in the shade is not an option. The more expensive shades have better heat-absorbing materials, making them even more effective at reducing the thermal and ultraviolet rays streaming into a car’s cabin. You can even get shades for the side windows.

A more permanent way to keep the heat out is to tint your windows. A high-quality tint will allow for a good amount of light to pass through the windows while blocking out many of the sun’s thermal rays. A caveat for tinted windows: Many states have regulations about how deeply tinted a car window can be or whether it can be tinted at all. Check your state’s requirements before investing in tinting. (Check with your local DMV or DOT.)

A really “cool” idea is to try a solar-powered ventilation fan. It attaches to the outside top of one of your rolled-up windows and has an outward facing solar panel to power it. The fan blows out the hot air from inside the car while pulling in the cooler air outside of the car. Higher-powered, more effective models have a larger solar panel that sits on your dashboard and powers the fans.

You can also get steering wheel covers that actually reflect the heat, protecting your hands from burns and the steering wheel from UV damage. They easily store in car door pockets. If you have leather seats, it might be wise to invest in car seat covers for the front seats. In addition to keeping the seats cooler, it will protect them from wear and tear and dirt and spills.

For your own comfort on a scorching day, try opening

the doors and windows for a minute to let out some hot air before you get in. When you turn on the A/C, make sure it’s set to ventilation mode (not recirculation) so it draws outside air in, helping to push hot air out. Direct the air conditioning vents to face upward or toward the open windows when you first start your vehicle. This sends the first blasts of hot air away from your face and into the outdoors.

Extreme heat can also affect other parts of the vehicle. Be sure to check your tire pressure regularly (your mechanic can show you how). Underinflated tires combined with hot pavement can lead to a blowout. Have your cooling system inspected regularly—the system that cools the engine, that is. It’s important to avoid overheating! High temperatures can also shorten the life of a car battery. Check it regularly for corrosion and clean the terminals, if necessary.

A full-car cover specifically designed to protect against UV rays can protect the exterior of your vehicle. It will help prevent damage to the paint and will keep your car cooler while it’s parked.

Another excellent way to protect the paint on your vehicle is to regularly wash and wax your car to remove dirt and dust. A professional auto detail is always worth the money! Paint sealants can offer protection from the sun’s UV rays and minimize fading and oxidation. Windshield wipers can also suffer in the hot summer sun. Rubber tends to dry out and crack, leaving you in the lurch when it finally does rain! Again, always try to park in the shade.

Taking care of your vehicle in extreme heat is important for safe driving and to prevent damage and deterioration over time. Keeping these tips in mind will improve your comfort and the health of your car.

Omaha Hypnosis Center

The Power of Change

People have the power to change, according to Jeff Martin, the owner and director of Omaha Hypnosis Center and Lincoln Hypnosis Center.“The secret is to pursue the part of yourself that you want to modify,”he says,“and to change your perspective toward the issue you have.”Through his hypnosis services, Jeff helps people lose weight, quit smoking, manage stress, build confidence, eliminate procrastination, remove habits, overcome compulsions, improve sleep, enhance their sports performance, and much more.

Jeff has been in the hypnotism field for over 30 years. He is certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists and operates a state-licensed school to train the next generation of hypnotists. He got involved with hypnosis in The Woodlands, Texas, while he was dealing with his own issues. “I used to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and felt powerless to stop,” he recalls.

After he studied hypnosis and experienced success, he realized that he could use what he’d learned to make a real difference in people’s lives. He decided to move to

the Lincoln area in 2008 to be part of a smaller city that provided opportunities to build a sense of community. “Sharing my expertise with others is very fulfilling,” he says.

Jeff offers potential clients a 30-minute free consultation to assess whether or not the person is a good candidate for hypnosis. During the consultation, Jeff gets to know their issues, tests their perspectives, and explains his process. Based on this conversation, he outlines a

personalized hypnosis plan. He provides both in-person and virtual sessions. “During COVID, 90 percent of my sessions were via Zoom, and they were very successful.”

“Hypnotism is not like what you see in the movies or like an entertainment act you might see at a birthday party,” Jeff explains. “It’s about learning to change, inside and out—physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.” With hypnosis, you can crack open an issue that has been stumping you for years, whether it’s excess weight, poor sleep, or compulsive behavior.

For example, most people know what to do to lose weight, but a lack of knowledge isn’t really what they’re up against. “People are facing the pressure of society, the fear of failure, and, possibly, a compulsion,” Jeff notes. “A lack of time and energy also gets in the way. You become exhausted and give up. Diet programs are a temporary fix. With hypnosis, you change your perspective. You see an image of yourself as less heavy…as the person you can become.” Can you see why some people might think of it as magical?

Some clients come to Jeff because they feel powerless to lose weight. Others want to quit smoking, vaping, or chewing. Others are dealing with personal demons that are keeping them from living full lives. Their visits have changed their perspectives and their lives.

“I have lost 50 pounds and 26 inches through Jeff’s help,” says Maureen. “I feel really good about myself and more in tune with who I am.” Sue also has issues with weight but feels she is now on a positive path. “I have struggled with

weight all my life, and Jeff has given me the tools to make changes. I have already lost 24 pounds and 22 inches.”

Jeff has worked with some of his clients for years. They tell their family and friends about their successes, and more people seek Jeff’s services. He maintains offices in Gretna and Lincoln to serve the entire eastern Nebraska community. “I am privileged to be able to get many clients what they need to be successful,” Jeff says. “I have been walking at the mall and had former clients tell me I saved their life, or couples who have exclaimed that I saved their marriage. It is a phenomenal feeling.”

One of those clients is Mike. “I chewed for 30 years,” Mike recalls. “Jeff put me on a journey of discovery and has given me the tools to no longer chew. It’s a great feeling, and I am very grateful for his help.”

“Hypnosis gives you the tools to make the changes required and become the person you need to be,” Jeff concludes. “That focus gets results.” When we seek support, hypnosis can empower us, providing innovative methods of assistance and the drive necessary to embrace change, experience renewal, and discover a new direction. If that sounds good to you, give Jeff Martin a call at 402-202-2577. The office in Gretna is located at 11855 South 216th Street. The office in Lincoln is located at 770 North Cotner Boulevard, Suite 310. Calco Enterprises Expert Masonry, Expert Service

If any of your upcoming projects will require masonry work, look no further than Calco Enterprises. For a truly professional job, the team at Calco Enterprises is the group you want on your side. Their commitment to the highest standards of masonry work is beyond comparison. Cal Peters has been in the masonry business for more than 40 years, and he knows a thing or two about excellence and distinction in the field. As the owner of Calco Enterprises, Cal takes a great deal of pride in his team’s workmanship and their dedication to going over and above their clients’ expectations.

Cal is extremely proud of the products, technology, and services that they provide, but nothing compares to the pride that he has in his staff. If you ask Cal, he will tell you that his business is all about quality workmanship and building relationships. Cal goes out of his way to hire only the best and most qualified individuals to serve on his team. That dedication to excellence is instilled in his committed staff and is displayed in their loyalty and workmanship.

While running this successful masonry business, Cal has definitely earned his standing as a longtime member of the Better Business Bureau. This is due, in part, to his focus on what he and his team can do to improve processes and improve relations with customers. They only use quality stone and brick from the most trusted manufacturers, and all of their workmanship is guaranteed for one year. Cal also offers free estimates for every potential job.

the time to explain the whole process of the project at hand. Yet another customer was very pleased with the brickwork Cal did in the front of their existing house, where bricks were actually falling off the house! If you’ve ever read a company’s online reviews to help you decide whether to do business with them, you’ll know that comments like these instill confidence in future customers.

The fact that Cal and his team take the time to educate their customers on exactly what they will be doing and why is a superb attribute in my book.

The fact that Cal and his team take the time to educate their customers on exactly what they will be doing and why is a superb attribute in my book. It has always annoyed me when workers have come to my house and not bothered to explain what they are doing and how they are going to do it. I feel like those explanations make the difference in who I would hire to work in and around my home.

What kind of construction work does Calco Enterprises do? I’m glad you asked! They work with brick, block, glass block, and stone. They can do new construction, renovate existing structures, or alter an existing structure to meet your needs. They can complete chimney repairs and restore chimneys to their original quality. They can even install moisture barriers and insulation. And they don’t favor large jobs over small jobs—they’re happy to build you a house or fortify your mailbox.

With something as long-lasting as masonry, it just makes sense to find a group of professionals you can trust. Cal and his team have a strong reputation for impressive work and have earned the admiration of their peers. Calco Enterprises is also fully insured. When it comes time to choose a masonry team, you can’t go wrong with Cal.

Some of their previous customers have great comments about Cal and his crew. One was amazed at how meticulously Cal matched existing color with the new grout and brick. Another customer noted how personable Cal is and how he took

Something you may or may not know about our lovely Nebraska winters is that the salt used to melt ice can do quite a bit of damage to concrete and brick steps and sidewalks. The reason for this is that the salt makes the concrete more porous. This leads to cracks from all the freezing and thawing that occurs during a typical winter. The salt also has a nasty habit of causing discoloration and even staining. Cal can recommend the best course of action if you find that your home or other property has this type of damage. As a matter of fact, Cal can recommend the best course of action for anything that requires brick or block work. To combat salt damage, he recommends having our concrete and brickwork regularly maintained.

In my opinion, Calco’s strong reputation speaks for itself. Cal’s commitment to providing the best possible service at the best possible price is a confidence builder for prospective customers. For all of your home or business masonry needs, give Cal a call at 402-630-2100 or send him an email message at cpeters@calcomasonry.com. This man knows his stuff! The Many Faces of Air Conditioning Keep Cool This Summer

Ready or not, summer is here—and it’s shaping up to be a hot one. There are many ways to beat the heat that involve traveling to pools, splash pads, or ice cream parlors, but what if you just want to relax inside, at home? Before the heat really hits us, you may want to consider making sure you’re running the best air conditioning unit for your home!

You may or may not know that there are many different types of air conditioning units on the market. Central air conditioning is probably the most commonly used in any home built in the last half-century, but ductless mini-split and geothermal systems do hold their fair share of the air conditioning market, as well. The trick is to figure out which system will work best for your house and the people who live in it.

Central A/C units function by circulating cool air through a system of ducts, which then deliver the cool air (and return the warm air) through grilled vents in your walls, ceilings, and floors. They are manufactured as split systems or as packaged units. Central A/C units are more efficient than single-room units, but they can be quite intensive to install. If you’re looking to install central A/C into an older home, the deciding factor may be whether or not you can (or are willing to) install the necessary ductwork.

If you already have an older unit and are considering

Outdoor Living

upgrading…you probably should. Even if your system is only a decade old, a newer, energy-efficient unit might use up to 20 to 40 percent less energy. You’ll want to look for the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating. The higher the number, the more energy-efficient the unit is. Certain very large homes may need two or more A/C units for central air. This is usually only needed in homes that cover more than 3,000 square feet on a single story.

Maintenance on central A/C units is relatively simple: regularly change out the filter, keep the outdoor unit clean and clear of debris, and call a professional when it comes to more intricate cleaning, maintenance, or repairs. For safety, it’s highly recommended that you cut off the power to your unit before cleaning it (there is usually a shut-off switch near the exterior unit).

Ductless mini-split systems can be a handy alternative to central A/C that works great for multi-family homes or

A Walk-In Bath Beyond Your Wildest Dreams

“It has been a God-send. Larry fell in the tub three times before and we’re able to bathe safely, avoid home health as long as possible, and I can just take care of him at home and Penners made that possible.” ~ Larry & Janice Johnson, Cozad

The Dream Spa has many amazing features:

• Wide door for easy entry

• Shower wand to soap up and shampoo with ease

• Heated seat and air to keep you warm

• Safe entry — no step-in required

• Standard tub space — no remodeling

• Unlimited designs — millions of options

“We love our Dream Spa Walk-In Bath. John was having difficulty getting in and out of our regular bath. I was always very worried he would fall. The Dream Spa has changed our lives and saved so much money by keeping John out of a care facility. What an emotional relief.”

retrofitting older homes without the ductwork for central air. Mini-split systems function similarly to central split units, with indoor and outdoor components, but without the ductwork. As such, they tend to function best when cooling single rooms. On the plus side, mini-split systems work at a more efficient rate than central A/C, with SEER ratings up to 30 or more. Being relatively compact compared to other units, mini-split systems’ regular maintenance is mostly covered by getting an annual check-and-clean by a professional HVAC specialist. There are some things you can maintain yourself, such as wiping down or vacuuming the system cabinet or inspecting and cleaning the air filter every four to six weeks, but it’s best to leave the rest to the pros.

Last, but not least, are geothermal heat pumps. Geothermal systems, sometimes referred to as GeoExchange, use the temperature of the earth as an exchange medium to cool and heat your home (as opposed to using the temperature of the air outside, like central and mini-split systems). Geothermal heat pumps come in closed-loop, horizontal, vertical, pond/ lake, open-loop, and hybrid systems. The system that works best depends on the climate, soil conditions, and available land near your home, so you’ll want to consult a geothermal installation professional to determine which would be the best fit for you. Since they don’t rely on the seasonal outdoor air, geothermal systems don’t have a SEER rating. They do still have energy efficiency ratings (EER), which are generally a lot higher than any of the other units discussed here.

Installation of geothermal systems is intensive, usually requiring a partial excavation of your yard to install the necessary coils. If your home doesn’t already have ductwork, it will need to be installed. Since the upfront cost of installation is so high, many people don’t consider it worth the investment—despite the far superior energy efficiency. Consider one if you’re in your home for the long haul; a geothermal heat pump usually pays for itself in around 20 years.

Window Cleaning, Pressure Washing, Roof Cleaning, Gutter Cleaning, Chandelier Cleaning, and more!

Like any large appliance, a new A/C unit is a big investment, whether you’re installing your home’s first system or looking for an energy-efficient upgrade. It’s more than worth your time to carefully decide which system is best for you!

Investing in Their Future

Protect Your Loved Ones With a Trust

Have you done any estate planning? Are your affairs in order?

According to Caring.com’s 2024 Wills Survey, only 32 percent of Americans have a will. The survey also revealed that many adults think they do not have enough assets to engage in estate planning. However, if you want your assets—no matter how large or small—to be specifically distributed or protected, consider a trust.

Trusts can be beneficial in many situations. A trust can control spending to protect beneficiaries from making poor decisions. A trust can manage assets like pets, recreational vehicles, vacation homes, or commercial real estate. Other reasons for setting up a trust include protecting assets from beneficiaries’ creditors and directing charitable gifts.

What is the difference between a will and a living trust? A will is a legal document that specifies how property and assets will be distributed to beneficiaries after death. A trust is a legal contract in which property and asset ownership is transferred to a trust account and distributed to beneficiaries as directed by the trust’s creator. One of the key differences between a will and a trust is that a will is subject to probate, while a trust usually does not require probate. Trusts are generally more complicated to contest than wills.

The two types of living trusts are revocable and irrevocable. Between these two, a revocable trust is the most common. This type of trust allows you to retain control of the trust and make changes, if desired, during your lifetime. You may change beneficiaries, add or remove assets, or revoke the trust altogether. Keep in mind that beneficiaries will pay estate taxes when assets are distributed from a revocable trust.

There are several benefits of a revocable living trust. The transfer of assets through the trust administration process is quicker than the probate process, meaning that beneficiaries inherit quickly. Assets are transferred privately, unlike the probate process, which is a public record. Administering the trust is usually less expensive than the probate process, and you retain control over the property in the trust. You may serve as the trustee during your lifetime and change the terms or cancel the trust at any time.

An irrevocable trust cannot not be modified or revoked once created. Ownership of assets is transferred to the trust, and a third party serves as the trustee. All beneficiaries must agree to any change in the trust’s terms. Since control over assets is relinquished to the trust, the assets are protected from creditors; however, laws differ between states, so protection may vary. Assets in an irrevocable trust are not considered part of your estate, which may provide potential tax benefits, depending upon the trust’s value and state laws.

Another type of irrevocable trust is an asset protection

trust. This type of trust can protect assets from creditors and lawsuits. Once assets are placed in the trust, they may not be placed elsewhere. Since the assets no longer belong to you, a future creditor cannot demand payment. This type of trust is helpful for business owners or those with high net worth.

If you have a loved one with a disability, a special needs trust may be helpful. This trust provides funds for a loved one without jeopardizing financial eligibility for programs like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid. Because the funds are managed by a trustee, they are not considered assets when calculating financial eligibility. Money from the trust cannot be given directly to the loved one, but it can be used for medical and dental expenses, physical rehabilitation, personal care attendants, home furnishings, vehicles, and education.

If you have an older loved one who has health issues that render them unable make decisions on their own, adult guardianship or conservatorship are options to consider. Guardianship usually provides authority to make personal, medical, legal, and financial decisions for things like general welfare, medical care, and living arrangements. Conservatorship applies to financial affairs like bill payments, investment management, and estate concerns. Both designations require regular submission of status reports about the individual’s welfare and finances.

Regardless of the type of trust, estate planning documents should be updated when circumstances change or a significant life event occurs. Trusts should be reviewed for family milestones like marriage, divorce, children, and grandchildren. Changes in property, business holdings, or financial circumstances warrant a review. Also, documents should be updated if there are changes to healthcare choices and personal wishes.

Having an estate plan is an investment in the future of your family. You will have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for according to your wishes.

Celebrating Good Fortune

Being Happy for Someone Else

Have you ever bought a lottery ticket, checked the numbers, and felt disappointed when you realized that someone else had won the mega jackpot? Have you ever noticed that feeling of disappointment morphing into jealousy?

“The worst part of success is trying to find someone who is happy for you.” —Bette

Being authentically happy for someone else’s good fortune— winning the jackpot, finding the love of their life, being awarded top of their class—can be a challenge for all of us, regardless of how evolved we may think we are! It’s worth the effort, though, because coveting another’s success is an excellent way to dig ourselves into a hole of self-pity and depression.

“Being happy on seeing others happy is happiness multiplied.”

Having a knee-jerk reaction when we hear about someone else’s good fortune is a great way to do a self-check about where we are within our own beings. How does it feel?

“This understanding sees that someone else’s achievement or happiness is, in a very real way, our own. So rejoicing in others’ good fortune really brings a lot of positive benefits.”

If we find ourselves feeling authentically happy for the fortunate friend, relative, or complete stranger, this tells us that we are doing well within our own being. Feeling appreciation for where we are, rather than comparing ourselves to others, maintains our own positivity and joy.

“Pursue what catches your heart, not what catches your eyes.”

How do we flip the switch from jealousy to joy when we hear good news about others? I have found that the quickest way for me is to take a moment, breathe, and direct my thoughts to gratitude for everything and everyone I have in my life. It is impossible to hold two opposing thoughts at the same time. If you hang in there, your feelings of jealousy will gradually turn to gratitude and joy.

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” —Epicurus

So the next time you find yourself holding a losing lottery ticket, make a point to read about the winner(s). Some of the happiest stories I have read are those of a group of coworkers, family, or friends who bought a winning ticket together. When I read those stories, I think, “How much fun would that be?” It brings a smile to my face every time.
