Happy holidays, everyone!

Points of Interest

Are you getting excited about the upcoming celebrations that are coming our way? I hope so. Many of us were not able to celebrate last year, so let’s make up for it this year. There has been much talk about the shortage of the most “popular” toys that many of us look for this time of year. It’s as if everyone is in a panic due to supply chain challenges. Parents and grandparents are in a quandary as to what to do. I have a suggestion. It’s not my idea—it’s my daughter Carissa’s. She suggested it a couple of years ago. Instead of buying more “stuff” for our granddaughters, Carissa thought that experiences and memories would be a better use of our dollars. The plan is to keep that tradition going in 2021. I think it’s a great idea for a number of reasons. First, it makes Manny and me think about each of the grandkids as separate individuals…what they like, what their passions are, what they have going on in their lives. I’ll admit that McKenna is a lot easier to come up with ideas for than her sister is. McKenna is 10 years old. She loves to cook, and she is so very good at it! Food and cooking are both very broad areas, with lots of gifting possibilities. Savannah is 16. She has lots of likes, so it is simply a matter of coming up with the best idea. We haven’t made a final decision on either of them yet, but we will. On another note, I admit that I am happy to see 2021 wind down. This year has been different than any I’ve ever experienced. It has felt like a “flash in the pan” kind of year. It’s as if people are trying to make up for 2020 as quickly as they can. Restaurants are jam-packed—good for them! I guess we all got tired of shopping, cooking, and—let’s not forget—cleaning up. Home improvement projects are also wildly popular. I heard that if you want to put a swimming pool in your backyard, the companies here in town are two YEARS out! All of this moving so fast is making my head spin. I hope that this past year has been good to all of you. I hope you’ve been able to connect once again with family and friends. I’m talking about connecting in person here…not this Zoom and FaceTime stuff that we are all so tired of! Human connection… human touch…it makes us feel like human beings instead of talking heads in a computer monitor. Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happy Kwanzaa, happy Õmisoka! I hope you all have a fantastic family time. See you next year!

A Few Words From One Of Our Advertisers: “I began advertising with Women’s Edition starting with the November 2019 issue and I have been thrilled with the results! I’ve had numerous new clients come to the gallery because they saw my ads in Women’s Edition, even as I’ve been working by appointment in recent months due to the pandemic. Most had never been to downtown Ralston, where I’m located, so introducing them to our town and what we have to offer has been another benefit! The advertising has resulted not only in sales, but also in new followers on my social media platforms and new newsletter subscribers. Together with their outstanding customer service and sales results, advertising with Women’s Edition has been one of the best investments I’ve ever made for my business. Combine 4 cups of flour with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of ginger, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of cardamom, and 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg. Add the whisked dry ingredients to the egg mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Take a handful of dough (keep the rest refrigerated while you are working) at a time and roll into ropes that are 1/2 inch thick. Cut the ropes into 1/2-inch pieces. Gingerbread Cookies Whisk together 6 cups of flour, 1 Tablespoon of baking powder, 1 Tablespoon of ground ginger, 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of ground cloves, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Set aside. In another bowl, mix 1 cup of soft butter, 1 cup of molasses, 1 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of water, 1 egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet. Mix until smooth, adding a little water if the dough is too dry. Divide the dough into 3 pieces and shape them into discs. Wrap each one in plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours. Lightly flour the counter and roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. (Just roll out one disc at a time; keep the others in the refrigerator while you work.) Cut with gingerbread cookie cutters. Place on ungreased cookie sheets about 1 inch apart, as these cookies do spread. Bake at 350 degrees for 10–12 minutes. Remove cookies from the pans and cool on a rack. Ice and decorate when cookies are cool.

Beef Tenderloin with Merlot Sauce For the sauce: In a saucepan, mix 1/2 cup of currant jelly with 1/2 cup of Merlot and 1/4 cup of beef broth. Simmer for 20–30 minutes, until the mixture is syrupy. Add 1 Tablespoon of butter. For the tenderloin: Rub a 3-pound beef tenderloin with 1 Tablespoon of olive oil, cracked black pepper, and kosher salt. Bake on a bed of sliced onion and garlic at 425 degrees for about 30 minutes, or until an internal instant-read thermometer reads 130–135 degrees. Remove from the oven and wrap in foil for 10 minutes to rest. Slice and serve with the Merlot sauce.

Christmas Eve Bisque Melt 1/4 stick of butter in a large stockpot. Sauté 1/2 cup each of chopped onion, green and red pepper, celery, and carrot. Add 1 can of drained corn, 1 can of creamed corn, and 1 quart of half and half. Heat through. Keep the heat on warm and add 1 can of cream of shrimp soup, 2 cans of cream of potato soup, 2 cans of cream of onion soup, and 1 can of mild Rotel tomatoes. Heat for 10–15 minutes, stirring often, but do not boil. Add 1 bag of frozen salad shrimp and heat through on low (about 10 minutes). Serve with croutons, shredded cheese, crusty cheese bread, and salad.

Mint Brownies For the brownies: Beat together 2 eggs, 1/2 cup of soft butter, and 1 cup of sugar. Add 2 ounces of melted and cooled unsweetened chocolate. Add 1/2 cup of flour and mix lightly. Pour into a greased 9x9-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool. For the frosting: Mix 2 Tablespoons of softened butter with 1 Tablespoon of milk, 1 cup of sifted powdered sugar, 2–3 drops of green food coloring, and 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract. Spread over the cooled brownies. Chill for 30 minutes. Glaze with 1 square of melted chocolate mixed with 1 Tablespoon of butter. Spread over chilled, frosted brownies. Cut and serve.

Slab Baked Potatoes Boil 8–12 small russet potatoes until barely soft. Spread them out over a cookie sheet with 1 Tablespoon of oil on it. Use the end of a large glass to smash each potato into a flat disc. Place in a 350-degree oven for 10–15 minutes, until crispy and golden. Melt 1/2 stick of butter with 2 minced cloves of garlic. Put the potatoes into a serving dish and pour the butter over the top. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar, sour cream, and chopped scallions.

It’s Time to Sparkle! Holiday Fashions to Lift Your Spirits

By Holly Bell

Twinkling candles, baking aromas, sparkle and glitter, frosted windowpanes, roaring fires— it’s time to start thinking about how to look and feel fabulous for your holiday events this year. We pretty much skipped this part of the merry-making last year, so we are ready to celebrate! This season will be a balancing act between the comfortable clothing we have come to prefer and the dressier styles made for social events. I am loving the softer, stretchy fabrics that designers have been offering lately. It makes me wonder how I lived without them. We will never go back to stiff, confining clothing again! My go-to party clothes have always begun with the following options: A great pair of black pants and a sparkly top or a one-and-done dress or jumpsuit. Let’s break these down to see how they will work for any woman who values both comfort and style. Black pants are a terrific start for any outfit—I have at least 10 different styles myself. For holiday-wear, I purchased a flowy pair of harem pants with an elastic waist. Not familiar with harem pants? They are full and usually silky, with a tight ankle. It’s a fun, glamorous style that simply cannot get any more comfortable. Another funky option is a wide-leg pant with a wide band at the waist. Again, you can’t beat the comfort and elegance of this style. Pair these pants with a sparkly top to be ready for any party. There will be gorgeous selections this winter, with a wide range of sparkle factor. Sequins will be strong, along with silky soft metallic fabrics. The voluminous sleeve is particularly on trend this year, along with a structured, padded shoulder. Belts are making a strong comeback and are fun to try. I particularly like the look of a flowy blouse front, tucked in to show off a decorative belt buckle. Top that off with dangly earrings and shoes with a little heel. Gorgeous, simple, and comfy! Finish your look with a little red lipstick. Black and white and red is always a signature color palette of the holiday season. Maybe you prefer the one-and-done convenience of a dress or jumpsuit. Of course, the little black dress is a great option, but it may need a little 10

December 2021

www.womensedition.com

updated accessorizing. Consider pearls! You may think of them as Grandma’s favorite, but pearls are back this season. Layers of pearls, along with teardrop pearl earrings, were dominating the holiday jewelry collections. Pearls mixed with gold is a stunning new look for winter. We have reached the burn-out point on minimalistic jewelry, so designers are going bold again! It may take a while to catch on, but big bling is on its way. Gold chains are cool again, both as Chanel-inspired necklaces and as embellishments on handbags and belts. Party dresses are another fun and easy option. Just put that special dress on and you automatically feel pretty! Standouts will be brightly colored this year, with red, purple, and royal blue leading the way. Gold and taupe are beautiful and elegant. Want to turn heads? Wear winter white in a sea of black! Any length will do—choose whatever looks good on you. Of course, there will be casual get-togethers, also. Perk up your favorite jeans with a soft, oversized sweater in red, white, or any color, with a metallic thread for a little fun flair. Switch out your everyday bag for a pretty envelope purse with a chain strap. Add a dressy black boot and dangly earrings to complete your look. I also love the new top and pant/sweater combos. Warm and comfortable for Christmas Eve or morning, but with a pulled-together cozy freshness. Casual is comfortable, and comfortable is good! Want to put together a look with what you already own? Take a minute to sort out all the red, black, and white pieces in your closet and then get creative putting them together. Indulge in a little sparkly jewelry and trade your everyday handbag for something a little more festive. Add a dressy shoe or boot and you will look and feel ready for the holidays. Let’s enjoy the wonderful world around us as we welcome the holiday season. Don’t forget to take a moment to relax and enjoy this time rather than rushing about trying to please everyone. Take some time to make yourself feel special. Our families and friends will still enjoy us even if things don’t go quite as planned. We know we are happiest when we look good and feel confident, and that starts when we get dressed. Happy holidays!

Members.MD

Personalized Healthcare

By Angella A. Arndt

Do you often have to wait days or weeks to see your primary care physician? Do you feel rushed during appointments? Does your physician seem like a stranger? If you would like personalized care, convenient access, and next-day or even same-day appointments, concierge medicine might be for you. Take a look at Members.MD—a membership-based private healthcare provider. For an annual fee, Members.MD patients receive personalized health and wellness care, immediate care when they need it, access to their physician seven days a week, and coordinated healthcare management. Members.MD Concierge Medicine Team

Members.MD was founded in February 2010 by Dr. Joel Bessmer and two investment partners. A few years later, Dr. Bessmer and his wife, Kathy, bought out their investors and became the sole owners. The medical practice has four concierge physicians and a team of other medical professionals. Dr. Bessmer, who also serves as the medical director, is proud of the Members.MD staff. “We have a fabulous team,” he says. “Our staff members have significant expertise, and our team approach to health care allows us to provide excellent coordinated care for our patients.” The youngest of six children, Dr. Bessmer grew up in Plainview, Nebraska. He loved science as a kid, and his mother’s nursing career piqued his interest in medicine. “I had a number of health issues growing up and had an ulnar resection during college,” he relates. His personal experiences and observations of physicians caring for patients influenced his decision to enter the medical profession. After earning an undergraduate degree from Kearney State College, Dr. Bessmer took a year off before medical school to work at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. “I learned a lot and received great medical experience working in the ICU,” he says. He completed his internship and internal medicine residency at UNMC and joined the internal medicine faculty in 1997. Dr. Bessmer directed a UNMC pilot program in concierge medicine known as the Personal Service Medical Practice (PSMP) from 2007 to 2010, before the decision was made to move the program off campus. The complexities of the healthcare system, Dr. Bessmer notes, often leave patients and their families in the difficult position of trying to coordinate their healthcare needs among several different providers. That’s what makes Members.MD different. “Concierge medicine is like having a doctor in the family,” he explains. “People want a great relationship with their primary care doctor, and we deliver that. We practice relationship-based medicine, which includes education and great health care.” While many services provided are covered by insurance, not all specialized testing is covered. Despite this, Dr. Bessmer shares, his patients love access to specialized testing because prevention matters. “If we can identify problems 12

December 2021

Tara Classen, RN; Jyoti Mahapatra, MD; Dave Bart, RN; early, it is of Betsy Flood, RN; Suzan Crabb, MD; Joel Bessmer, MD; great benefit to a Matthew Bott, MD; Michelle Delgado, PA-C patient’s well-being.” Members.MD will be the first practice in Omaha to offer GRAIL’s Galleri, a multi-cancer early detection test. This test, which requires a simple blood draw, detects more than 50 types of cancer. Members.MD also offers specialized testing for a variety of other healthcare concerns. Education and prevention are critical components of proactive health care, Dr. Bessmer asserts. “We should emphasize the medicine that makes patients healthier.” If you’ve never heard of concierge medicine, you’re not alone—many people aren’t aware that this type of medical practice is an option. “People often don’t realize that they can be more empowered in their health care,” Dr. Bessmer says. “We educate our patients about their health and teach them what they can control and how they can improve their health.” He thinks of the annual fee as an investment that patients can make in their own health. Patients are referred to specialists as needed, but their Members.MD physician remains involved throughout the process. This lets patients focus on their health instead of worrying about lack of communication between providers. When selecting a concierge physician, there are a few things to consider. Does the doctor practice the type of medicine that meets your needs? Is the doctor board-certified? What is the practice’s commitment to providing excellent patient care? What amenities are offered in addition to direct medical care services? Do you feel you can develop a trusting relationship with the staff? Asking questions will help you choose the doctor who’s right for you. Dr. Bessmer emphasizes that the physician-patient relationship is critical. “Many of us are busy and don’t find time to take care of ourselves. Our name, Members.MD, speaks to what we do. Our members come first, and we are committed to providing a great healthcare experience.” Members.MD is located at 11810 Nicholas Street, Suite 101, in Omaha. The office is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 402-779-8400 to schedule an appointment or find them online at members.md.

A Woman’s Work

It Must Be Christmas Time That Special Feeling

By Sharon Knierim

Have you ever noticed that people seem a bit mellower as we approach the holidays at the end of the year? Of course, this excludes the minions who invade department stores or any business establishment offering holiday savings on just about anything that can be manufactured. Cheerful folks are rarely spotted in overcrowded parking lots where holiday bargain hunters are driving madly up and down lanes to garner that last parking space, which usually proves to be too narrow and seems miles away from any store. Generally, it seems that most of us calm down even though our schedules become exceptionally overloaded. Oddly as it turns out, December and Christmas are always remembered in our minds and hearts as a happy time when most of us come together with family and friends. We feast on all kinds of goodies, attend parties and musicals, and have a generally good time. Did we mention sending and receiving holiday cards and gifts we treasure? If Christmas were not the focal point in December, would we become resentful of all the extra tasks such as shopping and baking? Would all that entertaining and gift giving cause us to say “Bah Humbug,” and really mean it? Even the stingiest curmudgeon seems to get into the spirit of

the holidays; it is not unusual to witness one of these less than gracious beings offer a smile or a chuckle now and then. Maybe we owe it to ourselves to feel some sense of lightheartedness now and then. For most of us, by the time the end of the year rolls around, we are ready for some frivolity and joy. And so we welcome this time of year. The message of Christmas started with a child, and so it seems only fitting that the tradition of this holiday is carried by children. When we recall Christmases past, our memories usually center on those holidays when we were children ourselves. Do you remember the folks preparing us with our singing or

speaking lines and costumes for the big Christmas play? Weren’t most of the gifts under the tree for the children? Santa was always more generous to the children of the household than to good old Mom and Dad. It seems that everyone watched breathlessly as little Johnny and Peggy opened their gifts, while the adults were usually left to unwrap their gifts in silence. Even so, that special feeling spread from person to person, and that feeling was unanimous. Some people have expressed their desire to foster this wonderful feeling all year long, and that would certainly be wonderful, but what if we were this happy 365 days of the year? Would, then, Christmas not be as special as it is? Who can know? What do each of us love most about this grandest of holidays? The answers to this little question vary widely. For some of us, it is the gifts. Who can say they don’t love gift giving and receiving? Holiday decorations also rank high on the list of favorites. Businesses and homeowners and even governmental offices seem to bring out every light bulb and figurine to say, “Yes, we are in the spirit!” If viewed from space, does the Earth look brighter with all these trillions of extra light bulbs? I have never found a person who does not enjoy holiday foods. Have you? Lots of special baking and preparing of special dishes, many of them heirloom, are presented at this time of the year, and so remain extra special. For me, it’s the Christmas cards. It is difficult for me not to become excited that someone actually took the time to think of me, bought a card, wrote a personal note in it, placed a stamp on the envelope, and posted it to my house. Oh, what a special feeling! Surprisingly, fewer people treasure Christmas music and are willing to share that this music evokes a certain sense of melancholy. But melancholy can be turned into the joy of the holiday. There is a special beauty in this time of the year. We feel special and more light-hearted than at any other time. It is full of special moments. A certain softness falls over humanity and our burdens seem less troublesome. If in doubt, spend some time with children. They understand the message of the season. During this holiday season, take time to enjoy that special feeling we all love. Let your heart be joyful and have a very merry Christmas with those you love. Go Red - Make It Your Mission.indd 1

Vantage Point

Patricia Catering & Cocktails Cater Your Events to Perfection

By Janette Calabro

There’s plenty to love about great food and special events. No matter what kind of event you’re planning, social time is more memorable with standout food and drinks that pop. If that sounds like what you want for your next event, call Patricia Catering & Cocktails. Office and catering manager Sarah Norman Rowe will create a fabulous food and drink menu that meets or exceeds your expectations—especially because you avoid all the fuss of doing it yourself! Sarah begins with an expert ear, listening to your needs. She’ll put into motion your desired menu, direct the chefs to prepare the food and drink the day of your event, and have it delivered to your venue on time, all while following CDC safety guidelines. Menu items are custom-made and locally sourced as much as possible. Food and wine can be carefully paired, if that’s part of your plan. From bacon-wrapped water chestnuts and artichoke hearts to a mouth-watering New York strip and everything in between, you’ll find an upgraded menu that will leave your guests feeling satisfied. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner? Check. Traditional, casual, or classic? Absolutely. Choose from suggested menus or build your own? No problem. Cocktails and beverages are also part of the package, since the company is licensed to serve alcohol. Patricia Catering & Cocktails does events of all sizes, Sarah shares. If you’re looking for catering help for the smallest birthday party or the biggest corporate event, you’re covered. Weddings have been a mainstay for the company since 1986, as have funerals and memorials to connect families after a loss. At this time of year, dinner parties and holiday gatherings are also common, and the food is prepared fresh and festive for any size crowd. “We cover all the milestones,” says Sarah. “We’re a full-service caterer. We take care of everything, except for the centerpieces and linens, so our customers don’t have to worry about it.” There’s so much to choose from that it’s hard to pick out a favorite, but Sarah does have her own faves, and some items are ordered more regularly than others. “Our chicken béarnaise sauce is extremely popular, and all of our employees love it,” Sarah shares. Another favorite? Brie pastries with apricot jam. That dish is incredible, Sarah raves. “I get excited whenever anybody orders it!” If you’re concerned about leftovers, there’s a zero-waste policy plan to cover you. You can take the leftovers home, ask Patricia Catering to package food for pickup after the event, or designate leftovers to be donated to shelters. For Sarah and her team, the catering 18

business is a labor of love. Giving back to the community is a given. Sarah Norman Rowe, “Our chefs have a passion for what they Office Manager do,” says Sarah, noting that the love for creating food can be very powerful. “We view ourselves as a family business, and we see our customers the same way—as family. We care about their events as much as they do! Our zero-waste policy shows that we really focus on being part of the solution when it comes to adding trash to the environment.” Part of that focus includes using plates, cups, and napkins that can be composted or recycled after an event. Marketing is often by word of mouth. When repeat customers know employees by name, that says it all, Sarah asserts. “I love when customers call our people by name! It means so much more if they remember your name.” The team tries to think ahead as much as possible, she continues. “Every day is different. Every event is so different. We love that, but it’s also a challenge because we can’t just go by what happened at the last birthday party. This birthday party has completely different details for a completely different person.” Ask any of the happy customers of Patricia Catering & Cocktails and they’ll rave about service and food. A. Bausch has plenty to brag about from a graduation party this year. “Thank you so much for your help with our daughter’s party,” says A. “We were thrilled. The servers were fantastic. They helped with drinks and replenished the desserts. I learned afterwards that they cleaned up a lemonade spill without being asked. They cleared dishes and took out the trash. I was able to visit with guests the entire time. The food was fantastic. We received so many compliments on the mac and cheese bar. One friend texted the next day that she is going to copy the idea. Thanks again!” If you want to enjoy your next event instead of working at it, reach out to Sarah and her team at Patricia Catering & Cocktails. Customize Your Jewelry Unique Dazzle and Shine!

By Janette Calabro

Custom jewelry has been trending in 2021. These unique statement pieces are in high demand, whether you’re getting ready for a video call, going to the office, or heading to a social event. Custom jewelry adds that extra something to make an outfit pop, brighten your look, and make you feel special. The custom jewelry process hinges on the metals and stones you desire, the jeweler you choose, and their process for design. You might even breathe new life into a family heirloom by refashioning a piece that has been hidden away for decades. Whether your piece is new or old, add a little extra sparkle by customizing! Let’s look at some 2021 fall trends for jewelry and see what’s forecasted for 2022. It all starts with a concept and, usually, some sketches of Most reputable jewelers use a specialized magnifying how you want the piece to look. ral jewelry—think a rose drop earring or gold flower stud earrings sporting a gleaming center diamond. Enameled pops of color over flowers along a delicate bracelet is a beautiful custom touch. Pared-back necklaces are chic this year, especially tiered items that pair shorter and longer lengths together for multiple dimensions. Shiny gold and the combo of gold and red are making a statement this fall, and so are gemstones. Chunky gold chain necklaces and chokers are all the rage—you’ll likely see them everywhere. Invest in a few thick chains of varying lengths. They’re built to last, and you’ll wear them year-round, by themselves or with lockets or pendants attached. Sturdy chain bracelets are also popular, especially with a heart lock at the clasp. Bulky statement rings are eye-catching, best in geometric or ball shapes. Oval dome rings? Yes! Look bold with a thick gold band and an oval gemstone like a purple amethyst right in the middle. Stones thought to provide protection from a higher power (you be the judge), as well as metals that carry healing properties, are still in style. Vintage-inspired charms from the 1970s into the early 2000s are back, too, like gold medallions that protect you from harm with their thick, armor-like resilience. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are classified as precious stones, distinguished by their quality, rarity, and clarity of color. Other stones are considered semi-precious because they are easier to come by. A Burma ruby is one of the most valuable precious stones, but unheated rubies from Madagascar, Mozambique, and Tanzania are also highly valuable.

Let’s not forget that diamonds, the usually colorless stones formed from carbon, are the hardest precious stones that naturally occur on earth. There are blue, pink, and red diamonds, among other exotic colors, and these are among the most expensive gemstones in the world. In 2021, the blue diamond cost nearly four million dollars per carat. (If you’re wondering about the difference between “carat” and “karat,” take it from Merriam-Webster: “A carat is a unit of weight used to measure the size of a gemstone such as a diamond. A karat is a measurement indicating the proportion of gold in an alloy out of 24 parts, so 18K gold is 18/24 parts of gold.”) Semi-precious gems are unique, beautiful, and often hold their value well, making them excellent choices for custom jewelry. These stones add dazzle to modern or heirloom jewelry. Pearls, black onyx, opals (similar to quartz), topaz, and lustrous moonstone are beautiful additions to a custom design. Tourmaline, rare violet-blue tanzanite, garnets, and turquoise are among dozens of other lovely semi-precious gems that can make your jewelry as unique as you are. For metals, yellow gold (a combination of pure gold, silver, and copper) has been the trendsetter this year, although many designers are advocates for silver or platinum into next year. Gold is soft and easy to work with and looks exquisite to wear. Silver is more abundant and, therefore, less expensive. The truth about these metals and your favorite gemstones is that anything goes as long as you like it! With a little help from a custom jeweler, your once-in-a-lifetime piece will carry magic for generations to come. Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

“I have turned my passion into my profession and that is helping people live longer lives without pain and suffering.” NUCCA is a gentle, specific correction in the upper neck that takes the pressure off of the brainstem so that it and the entire nervous system can function properly.

Time for a Refresh? Call Kitchen Tune-Up

By Linda Sutherland

Is your kitchen looking a little tired? Maybe a little (or a lot) dated? Are you concerned about the high cost and inconvenience of a major kitchen remodel? Great news! You can get a beautifully refreshed kitchen in just one to five days, and without breaking the bank. If that sounds like a great way to turn your drab kitchen back into a thing of beauty, call Kitchen Tune-Up. The thought of a complete kitchen remodel can be overwhelming in terms of both time and price. Jason Krueger of Kitchen Tune-Up has inspiring ideas and plans to put the sparkle back in your kitchen at a wide variety of price points. Jason’s solutions can take your kitchen from hohum to breathtaking and bring the energy of your kitchen up to what you have always dreamed it could be. A primary goal for many homeowners dissatisfied with their kitchens is to change the look of their cabinets. In many cases, dated cabinets are torn out and replaced entirely, but this is often unnecessary. If cabinets are in great shape structurally and just need cosmetic updating, consider refacing. Refacing is a simple idea: Remove the doors and drawer fronts before installing new doors and drawer fronts. Hardware can be replaced at that time. Refacing cabinets costs less than replacing cabinets, takes far less time, and creates much less waste. For homeowners who have solid but outdated cabinets, Jason also offers cabinet re-dooring. In this case, your cabinet doors and drawer fronts are replaced with new ones that are color-matched to blend nicely with your existing cabinet boxes. Another option that appeals to many homeowners is having their cabinets painted. There are many factors to consider when painting cabinets, especially in the kitchen, where grease and moisture can be problematic. For example, what type of paint should you use—brush or spray? Should you strip the old paint off first? What kind of finish is appropriate for the kitchen? Kitchen Tune-Up has all those answers and many more. Of course, some kitchen cabinets just need to go. For homeowners who would like to change the layout of their kitchen or whose existing cabinets are no longer in good repair, Jason also offers new custom cabinet design and installation. Kitchen Tune-Up can also replace your countertops and backsplashes. Warranties come with most of the services offered by Kitchen Tune-Up, which is a national franchise. Their customer service plan ensures that every project meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations. Each kitchen project is custom-designed to the individual client’s style and 24

concept. You can be completely confident in Kitchen Tune-Up’s ability to deliver exactly Jason Krueger, Franchise Owner what you envisioned for your kitchen refresh, and the average tune-up takes about three to five days from start to finish. Jason grew up in Hebron, Nebraska, and he very much adheres to the Midwest values with which he was raised. When asked what gives him the most joy with his work, Jason doesn’t hesitate. “It’s seeing the smile on my customers’ faces when they see the finished project,” he says. “I love how happy and amazed they are at how much it changed the entire look of their kitchen.” Jason has owned the Kitchen Tune-Up franchise for three and a half years now, and he really loves what he is doing. His philosophy is that many old things can be made new again with the right care. “I look at a kitchen redo the same way you would look at detailing a car that you love,” he shares. “You fix the dents, dings, damage, and wear that time has caused and make it beautiful and new again.” He especially loves that he can offer less expensive options for people who do not want a full kitchen demolition but still want their own unique look. Jason advises homeowners not to wait until they’re ready to sell their house to do a kitchen tune-up. “Do it now,” he says, “so you can enjoy it while you’re still living in your house.” When asked what advice he would give people thinking of going into business for themselves, he recommends learning the ropes from a mentor you trust. “Listen to their experiences and learn from their successes as well as their failures before you jump into a new business. I have found that retired people have a wealth of wisdom and knowledge that is valuable and irreplaceable.” I would second that wise advice! If it’s time for a tune-up in your kitchen, reach out to Jason Krueger at 402-340-0008. With Kitchen Tune-Up, you may be able to make a big difference in your kitchen without spending a lot of time or money! Request a free home consultation at kitchentuneup.com.

Simply BeYoutiful

Enhancing Natural Beauty

By Linda Sutherland

Enhancement, generally speaking, means an improvement in quality or value. I’m sure we all would be on board with enhancing what nature gave us. There are many mornings when I have stepped up to the mirror feeling less than enthusiastic about starting my daily makeup ritual. The possibility of waking up with my makeup already applied is certainly tempting. Thanks to Simply BeYoutiful and the talented Mellisa Karel, we all have the option to wake up BeYoutiful! Mellisa grew up here in Nebraska and started her career as a clinical dietetic technician in 2002. She went on to the UNMC College of Dentistry in 2010 and earned a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. More recently, Mellisa returned to school to become a licensed aesthetician and licensed permanent color technician. She has completed courses in academic and practical application training in permanent makeup, and she’s been enhancing people’s looks and lives as a certified permanent makeup artist for three years. This enterprising young woman is deeply passionate about beauty and health and strives to help all her clients discover ways to enhance their beauty while maintaining a natural look. Mellisa specializes in microblading brows, permanent eyeliner, and cosmetic tattooing for lips. She can even lift and tint eyelashes, which is particularly interesting to me. My eyelashes seem to grow straight out instead of up. They can be the bane of my existence when I try to get that “eyes wide open” look. Eyelash lifting and tinting sounds like something that would remedy that situation, and it is! To understand the procedure, Mellisa explains, “think of it as permanently curling your lashes and then applying mascara that never wears off.”Yes, please! This procedure boosts and lifts each individual lash before tinting them to achieve a thicker, longer, darker lash. Next, let’s talk about permanent eyeliner. What is it? How is it done? Does it hurt to have it applied? (If so, does it hurt more or less than accidentally poking yourself in the eye with your eyeliner?) Mellisa reassures me that she uses a topical numbing cream to keep clients comfortable during the procedure. A pigment is placed on the eyelid along the top of your lash line. This tattooed eyeliner totally replaces your everyday liner, leaving you with a natural look that enables you to walk out of the house in no time. If you’re like me and hate to leave home without eyeliner and mascara, these procedures could really streamline your daily routine! If your younger, more impulsive self left you with a tattoo you now regret, you may have looked into laser tattoo removal and learned about the undesirable scarring it

can cause. Mellisa is pleased to offer a process Mellisa Karel, Owner, Licensed Aesthetician of tattoo removal without the use of lasers. Mellisa uses a saline tattoo removal system that even works on people who have tried lasers for removal with less than satisfactory results. (She also uses it to fix undesirable results from permanent makeup jobs that her clients may have received elsewhere.) There are no chemicals or acids used in the process. “I am extremely excited about our new service of saline tattoo removal,” Mellisa says. “Unlike other forms of tattoo removal, saline removal is safe for most skin types. It tends to be less painful than laser removal and does not lead to blistering or scarring of the skin.” As a registered dental hygienist, Mellisa is also enthusiastic about beautiful teeth. The teeth whitening process she prefers is a Philips Zoom QuickPro whitening varnish system that is used in conjunction with light. Mellisa works especially diligently to prevent tooth sensitivity during and after the quick in-office process. She loves getting positive feedback from her clients. “I love hearing that clients are delighted with the results,” Mellisa says. “I love that they are comfortable here!” Clients who come to Simply BeYoutiful can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, and they know they will be treated with honesty and respect. Mellisa’s professionalism and skills are highly appreciated. “It gives me a great feeling to connect with my clients and to know they are getting a quality procedure that will enrich their lives,” Mellisa shares. Happy clients make for a happy Mellisa! In addition to permanent makeup and tattoo removal, Mellisa also offers beauty treatments like facials, peels, waxing, and dermaplaning. If you want to enhance your natural beauty, a consultation with Mellisa might be just what you need. You can find Mellisa inside Aislinn Medical Spa, at 818 Village Square in Gretna. Holiday Relaxation and Rejuvenation Massage is the Perfect Gift

By Loretta McCollum

December is filled with family gatherings, parties, and shopping for the perfect gifts. It’s the most joyful time of the year, but it can also be the most exhausting. We run ourselves ragged in the quest to provide the perfect holiday for the people we love. We need to take time out from all of the festivities, food, and frolic to relax and rejuvenate. Getting a massage is a great way to ease the stress and strain of the holidays. This is an ideal time to treat yourself. A massage is also a great gift for the person or persons on your list who seem to have everything. Professional massage has many benefits, including muscle relaxation, stress relief, improved sleep quality, and relief from chronic pain. The multiple types of massages produce a variety of results. Swedish massages utilizes soft, broad strokes up and down the entire body, focusing on specific regions. The muscles are rubbed in the same direction that blood returns to the heart. Tapping motions on the top layer of muscles, combined with manipulated joint movement, is both relaxing and energizing. A Swedish massage also increases the blood’s oxygen level, improving circulation and relieving tension. Hot stone massages help relax tight muscles by placing heated stones onto specific areas of the body, such as the back, stomach, and face. The stones warm and relax the muscles. The massage therapist is then able to utilize deeper pressure on

those areas without discomfort. A hot stone massage can decrease stress, increase flexibility, and decrease muscle spasms. A deep tissue massage is an intense massage that targets muscle knots. The massage therapist applies warm oils and direct pressure to relax the top muscle layers, allowing for penetration to the deeper muscle tissues. This type of massage helps relieve chronic aches and pains. It’s also beneficial for sciatica pain and fibromyalgia. Deep tissue massage is also used in combination with stretching for sports massages. A pre-sport massage includes techniques to increase range of motion, while a post-sport massage focuses more on reducing inflammation. Thai massage combines acupressure and yoga poses to relax the body. The client is actually involved in assisting the therapist. The client lies on the floor while the therapist guides the client through various stretches, manipulating the body into various positions. Benefits may include boosting energy, reducing stress, and stimulating circulation. Expectant mothers can benefit from a prenatal massage.

Benefits include lowering anxiety, decreasing leg and back pain, improving sleep, and reducing levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine. Prenatal massages are typically performed after the first trimester. Pregnant women should not undergo deep tissue massage because of the increased risk of blood clots during pregnancy. Look for a certified massage therapist with specific training and experience in pregnancy massage. (They’ll also have a special table to accommodate your belly!) Your doctor or midwife may also have some recommendations. There’s also Shiatsu, a traditional Japanese technique in which the therapist applies finger pressure to multiple areas, holding each one for several seconds. Stretching and joint rotation are also employed. This massage method is based on traditional acupuncture and can help ease headache pain, muscle pain, and stiffness, promoting overall well-being. It can also increase blood flow and improve overall mood. Trigger point massages and reflexology target specific areas. Ever had a knot in your back or shoulders? A trigger point massage may help. A trigger point is a tight, tender area of muscle tissue that can cause a great deal of pain. Trigger point massage therapy targets the specific muscle tissue with pressure and deep breathing. One or multiple sessions may be needed, depending on the area being treated. Reflexology is a type of massage that applies pressure to reflex areas of the feet, relieving pain and stress, promoting relaxation and a good night’s sleep. It can be especially wonderful for someone who stands for long periods of time. It’s believed that the regions targeted by reflexology are connected to the nervous system and the brain, further promoting stress relief. Couples massages and chair massages make great gifts. Couples receive side-byside massages, along with optional extras like champagne, roses, and relaxing in a hot tub. A chair massage utilizes a specially designed chair for a great massage of the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and hands. Don’t let the holiday season stress you out! Give yourself or a friend or family member the gift of relaxation. Your local spa, salon, or massage therapy studio can help you choose the best option for your needs. Prices average between $40 and $150 per hour, depending on the services provided. Be sure to select a board-certified therapeutic massage professional. Design Spotlight

The Latest in Lighting

By Robyn V. Powell

Lighting is an essential element in any successful home design plan. When it comes to creating a beautiful and comfortable environment, lighting sets the mood before you even cross the threshold. Today’s lighting isn’t about entering a room and flipping a switch. It’s about lighting our homes with a purpose, using smart technology, design aesthetics, and healthy room solutions. There’s never been a better time to rethink your home lighting. Check out this year’s trends for ideas on how to wrap comfort and style into a beautiful, functional package and create a home that welcomes friends and family. Modern lighting trends draw inspiration from classic roots and sleek design elements. With a nod to the Art Deco era of the 1920s and ’30s, today’s lighting is a fusion of sophisticated design and practicality—a blend of historical elegance with present-day impact. Clean lines and simple shapes echo the maxim “form follows function.” Circles, squares, and rectangles fabricated in metal and wood finishes inject freshness into a space. Choose modern fixtures with black, white, neutral, and metallic accents to bring a sense of cohesiveness to airy, open-plan spaces. When choosing lighting for different rooms, consider both style and function. Embracing function doesn’t mean settling for plain or boring! In the kitchen, large pendants are now the fixture of choice. Eye-popping twin pendants over an island command the room with stylish flair. Pairing oversize pendants with the rich simplicity of warm linen shades defines an openplan dining space.

The increasing desire for a sophisticated retreat in the bedroom and master bath has led homeowners to opt for Hollywood glam chandeliers. The gorgeous impact of a crystal chandelier above the tub creates a sparkling silhouette that invites a long, relaxing soak. Let the morning routine become a breeze with face-flattering sconces flanking the vanity mirror and banish shadows with LED backlit mirrors. Household technology is undergoing a transformation to make lighting an integral part of our everyday life. We’re going to channel light to see better, to enhance our mood and well-being, to beautify our spaces, and to protect our homes in an energy-efficient manner. The concept is simple: Imagine all the lighting in your home as part of a system divided into programmable zones. Each zone is designed for a particular function or mood and can be controlled by a wall panel or smart phone app. For example, the Arriving Home zone turns on the outdoor,

“Erin did a fantastic job helping me sell my home. She was patient, responsive, and knowledgeable, and she recommended sensible, cost-effective tweaks to put the property in optimal show-worthy condition. She invested significant time staging my home, so that it would appeal to a broader audience, which impressed me and everyone who saw it! What really sets Erin apart from others is her education and professional experience in design. It is not enough for her to simply advertise a home for sale. Erin takes time to assist in the preparation and staging both the interior and exterior with her keen sense of style bringing cohesion to each space, which elevates the opportunity to attract and excite potential buyers! It was very apparent she cared enough to work hard to not only meet my financial goals but exceed my expectations AND maximize the value of my home. I would definitely hire her again.” A. Astley

entry, and kitchen lights for your arrival, while the Vacation zone turns lights on and off at random to make your house look occupied while you’re away. If the arrival of cold weather and shorter days has got you feeling a little down, the lack of light may be the problem. Science has shown that light affects our mood, well-being, and, ultimately, our physical and mental health. In the depths of winter, millions of Americans suffer from low energy and concentration. The solution? Exposure to natural light or to artificial light that mimics the properties of natural light. Manufacturers are producing new products that offer health benefits by simulating the natural rhythms of daylight indoors. The advent of LEDs has been a game changer in the lighting world! LEDs use 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs and last up to 25 years, making them the superstar of lighting choices. The Kelvin scale is used to describe a light’s hue. The higher the Kelvin value, the cooler the light hue. For example, if you want something that mimics the warm glow of a traditional incandescent bulb, choose a bulb rated 2700K to 3000K. Bulbs with higher Kelvin ratings, such as 4000K or 5000K, provide bluish-white or cool light. If you have a cooler color palette—blues, grays, stainless steel, and slate, a 3000K lamp will enhance your space. Lamps with warmer light soften a space, bringing out wood tones, earth tones, and warm paint colors. Working with an interior designer or lighting pro who gets to know your home, style, and personality is a smart investment. They can use their expertise to find solutions specific to your functional needs and designs that express your personality—pulling it all together in a fresh, cohesive way. Lighting showrooms are another great resource. Their trained experts know exactly what size fixture will properly illuminate your space and which bulb best suits each fixture. The future of home lighting is all about lifestyle enhancement. There’s a size, style, shape, and material for every preference, whether your taste is traditional, funky, modern, or rustic. As you explore the exciting world of lighting options, let beauty and innovation inspire you to see your home in a whole new light. Addiction Treatment

Bringing Balance Back to Life

By Leslie Byrne

Sometimes, we use and hear the word “addictive” in a metaphorical way, like “that new show is so addictive,”when what we really mean is that we enjoy something very much. Clinically, an addiction is an inability to stop using a substance or doing something that causes psychological or physical harm. When someone is addicted to something, they continue using the item despite the harm it causes. An addiction should not be confused with dependence. Addiction is an uncontrollable need for a substance; dependence refers to a physical and mental attachment or tolerance to something. People can become addicted to a substance like tobacco, but addiction can also be behavioral—like gambling, eating, or even exercise. We may even be aware of our own addictive behaviors, but we might not realize when we have reached the point that we need treatment. In other cases, we want to stop doing something but have failed to do so. Many smokers, for example, want to quit but cannot, despite knowing how smoking negatively impacts their lives. Wanting but failing to stop is a sure sign that it is an addiction and that treatment is needed. Would you be surprised to learn that the most common addiction in the United States is tobacco, followed by alcohol? Because both substances are legal for adults to use, and the worst side effects generally take years to develop, many people are slow to seek treatment. Other common addictions in the

United States include marijuana, painkillers (such as codeine, Vicodin, and Oxycontin), cocaine, heroin, and drugs to control anxiety (such as valium or Xanax). Almost 10 percent of Americans are addicted to alcohol or drugs. The symptoms of an addiction depend on the substance. Some are easier to hide than others. For example, the impact of drug or alcohol abuse is fairly obvious because the changes in behavior are easy to see. That said, most addictions develop over time, and a gradual worsening of symptoms may be hard to detect. Someone addicted to drugs often has intense urges to use and feels the need to use the drug regularly. Over time, they may spend money that they do not have to purchase drugs and may stop meeting obligations or other responsibilities. This is often how a substance addiction is recognized.

This Crazy Ride Called Life Seize the Moment

We are winding down 2021. Good year? Bad year? Perhaps a little of both? This time last year, it felt as if we had been running a long, hard marathon all year, and we were running out of steam. Parents became teachers. Businesses were put on a very long pause. Husbands and wives had to learn how to be strong and together again…a lot. We were exhausted, and everyone knew everyone was tired, but we made it. “Life is very interesting…in the end, some of your greatest pains become your greatest strengths.” —Drew Barrymore

As 2021 draws to a close, the conversations that I am having with people have recently begun to shift. No longer are the discussions only about the trauma and challenges we all faced with the pandemic. Many of us have begun conversations about the successes we found and the lessons that we learned in the process—what 2020 taught us. People are now beginning to see some of the blessings that came with the curse. Some changed careers. Some retired early. Some moved away. Some came to realize how vitally important human connection is…with family and friends. “Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” —Charles Swindoll Surviving 2020 challenged even the most optimistic. There was

no playbook to refer to. There was no map to follow. We were all thrown into a wild, wild ride that didn’t seem as if it would ever end.

“Life is what we make it, always has been, always will be.” —Grandma Moses

I am very happy to see that the tides are beginning to change. I don’t believe the world will ever be “the same” again, and I believe that is a good thing. Perhaps we were taking our lives for granted. Perhaps we were ignoring family and friends. Perhaps we were getting our priorities misaligned. Perhaps we had forgotten the importance of gratitude and thankfulness in our lives. “Life is from the inside out. When you shift on the inside, life shifts on the outside.” —Kamal Ravikant

My hope is that we can all take something away from this experience that is positive. My hope is that we will all reflect and be grateful once again. My hope is that we look at our circle of family and friends and tell them how much they mean to us and how much we appreciate them. Seize the moment. Seize the day. “The truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.” —Eminem

Family Gatherings

A Time to Share Family History

The fall and winter holidays remind me of family time… occasions when families gather to get reacquainted, share a meal, and celebrate the season. These celebrations may be elaborate affairs with magnificent banquets or simple gatherings with simple fare designed more to share time than bounty. Some years, when the weather wasn’t too threatening, Mom and Dad would load us into the car and we’d drive to visit grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins…whoever lived nearby. The old folks would gather (women in the kitchen; men in the parlor or living room) and catch up on family news and events. The kids would usually find board games, a deck of cards, or something to do outdoors. We spent this time getting to know our cousins. The times I remember best happened after I was married and had kids. It was the time spent with the other adult women. After the table was cleared and dishes were done, the women would sit around the table reminiscing. Photo albums would come out, and the stories would begin. Pictures from family reunions in the past led to tales of what this cousin or that aunt was doing now. A frequent question was, “Whatever happened to…?” I listened more as an adult than I did growing up. Family history meant something more because now I had a family of my own.

By Marge Shoemaker

My kids are old enough now to be interested in family history. They’ve met most of the aunts, uncles, and cousins on Mom’s side. We started having family reunions on a regular basis by the time they were in their early teens. They’ve formed relationships with different cousins, most of whom live some distance away… family members were located from Hawaii to Maine, from Washington to Arizona, and places in between. Unfortunately, they don’t know much about other sides of the family. I’ve spent a lot of time going through family pictures, trying to identify people and events. In the process, I found a picture of Dad’s uncle Harry, who we’d never met and knew nothing about. My brother Doug traveled the South Pacific with the navy. When in port, he’d look up our family name in the phone book. (This was years ago, when such things existed.) He found the name in Sydney, Australia, but wasn’t able to make contact. We decided Uncle Harry was a horse thief who was banished to Australia to serve his time. Now I know that Uncle Harry lived in Canada…the picture was from a visit to relatives in Minnesota. I miss the family gatherings, big and small. I relish the family history shared during those times. I hope to learn more through photos shared. I hope you and yours learn family history during your family gatherings…no matter the time of year. The kids pick up more than you realize.

By Linda Sutherland

Decisions surrounding when to start or build a family can be very personal and sometimes stressful. Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine is a state-of-the-art infertility clinic that offers world-class treatments and effective solutions for hopeful families. They use the latest reproductive technology to assist patients through every step of their journey to grow their family. In addition to offering the highest standards of medicine and integrity, these dedicated professionals treat each of their patients with compassion, kindness, and respect. They are also invested in patients’ privacy and confidentiality. The science of reproduction has come incredibly far in the last few decades. The collaboration of specialists at the Center helps ensure that patients understand the procedures and practices every step of the way. Dr. Elizabeth Constance is a board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologist who embodies everything that the Center takes pride in. Dr. Constance has been with the Center for three years and treasures every minute she has worked with the team. In addition to treating patients with infertility and

Elizabeth Constance, a broad range of reproductive conditions, Dr. MD, FACOG Constance serves as the center’s Director of Fertility Preservation, a cause near and dear to her heart. What exactly is fertility preservation? It is the process of saving or protecting eggs or sperm so that a person can use them to have biological children in the future. According to Dr. Constance, this option is available for women who are

not ready to have children yet but want to at some point in their lives. Egg freezing can be a meaningful option for women who know they want to have children in the future but are not ready right now due to career or relationship considerations. Because egg quality and fertility decreases over time, freezing eggs at a younger age can potentially make having children easier later on. Egg freezing is a fertility preservation procedure in which mature eggs are removed from the ovary to be frozen and stored for use in the future. There are several steps involved in the process of egg freezing. First and foremost is the physical evaluation. Dr. Constance and the team will perform initial testing to determine how successful egg freezing would be. These tests include an ultrasound and some blood work to measure hormone levels. Once it is determined that a woman is a good candidate for egg freezing, she undergoes a series of hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries. The actual egg retrieval is done with anesthesia and a very thin needle that is used to collect the mature eggs. In addition to egg freezing, this dedicated group of professionals also offers artificial insemination (which delivers sperm directly to the uterus), in vitro fertilization (which can help overcome blocked fallopian tubes and male infertility issues), egg donation, and services to guide LGBTQ+ couples toward their dreams of parenthood through plans personalized to each individual or couple’s needs. They also provide treatment for disorders like polycystic ovarian syndrome (a disorder that can make pregnancy difficult) and endometriosis (which affects up to 50 percent of women struggling with fertility).

When asked about the professional challenges she faces, Dr. Constance first notes the struggle to get infertility treatments covered by insurance. “Infertility is a disease, just like diabetes is a disease,” she points out, but infertility treatments are often not covered. “There are now 13 states that require insurance companies to cover infertility treatment, and our clinic advocates for coverage in our state, as well.” Another challenge, she says, is getting information to the women who need it. “I believe that knowledge is power,” she asserts. “The more information we have, the more easily we can make decisions that balance our hope and our expectations.” It’s clear from speaking to Dr. Constance that she is passionate about her profession. She brings empathy and understanding to her patients as they navigate the bumpy road to fertility. People struggling with infertility experience significant anxiety and emotional distress, and it takes an extraordinarily positive outlook to guide and treat these individuals. Dr. Constance brings this same level of compassion and support to patients whose journey, unfortunately, does not result in a successful pregnancy. It bears repeating that knowledge is power, and Dr. Constance and her partners respectfully walk their patients through the details and relevant facts for each step of the way, no matter what the eventual outcome. If you are struggling to conceive, call the amazing group of professionals at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine. They understand the challenges of patients who are facing fertility issues, and they are ready to provide the hope, treatment, and compassion that you need. Goldsmith Silversmith Iconic Wearable Art

By Maria Harding

“What’s most important to me is that customers get comfortable in the store and that they trust me with their jewelry,” says Dwaine Ferguson, owner and chief artist-craftsman at Goldsmith Silversmith in Omaha’s Old Market. He certainly knows what he’s doing—Dwaine has been in the business of making fine jewelry for nearly 50 years.“There’s something trustworthy about the old guy in a small place,”he reasons. This reliability has earned him a far-reaching reputation. Well-known entertainers visit his shop when they are in town—most recently, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac—bringing pieces for repair or commissions for new pieces. Dwaine has lived and worked in the Old Market for decades. When he was a young man in the 1960s, he says, the Old Market scene was distinctly more “hippie,” with more small mom-and-pop stores. Nevertheless, the overall atmosphere has remained consistent over the years, and that’s one of the things he loves about the neighborhood. He likes that the area continues to steer away from chain stores and that musicians still play on the street corners. As an artist who practiced architecture for nine years, he sees a concerning trend in the growing number of homes without architectural personality. He sees this same trend in the jewelry at big-box jewelry stores—he believes they charge too much for pieces that lack imagination. Dwaine has a professional background as a sculptor, and his art has been displayed or is a permanent feature at several places in the Midwest. “No time for that now, though,” he says. Fortunately for his clients, that creative energy is channeled into wearable art for men and women, featuring gems, semi-precious stones, pearls, sterling silver, and yellow and white gold. “The jewelry I make is really just a smaller version of what I used to do,” he says. In Dwaine’s experience, clients who want to commission a jewelry piece fall into two categories. The first type of customer wants a unique piece designed for them but has absolutely no idea yet what that will look like. The second type arrives armed with dozens of pictures that they want to patch together into a single creation. Dwaine will never copy a design, but he can easily make something similar, so it’s a great idea to bring in photos of pieces you like. He recommends that clients educate themselves a little about the process and the terminology so they can communicate their wants and needs effectively. There’s a handy glossary on his website for just this reason! Customers who need help forming an idea of what they want are never disappointed. “The ideas are never a problem,” Dwaine laughs. “I have so many ideas!” His customers appreciate that Dwaine really listens to them and produces stunning work. In an online review, Kevin N. writes, “My wife had some ideas about what she wanted,

and Dwaine spent a lot of Dwaine Ferguson, Owner time with us working out the details. I like knowing that there is not another one like it. She is always getting compliments on it.” Goldsmith Silversmith also carries an extensive collection of vintage jewelry. “Some of these are beautiful as they are,” Dwaine points out, “and I think they should be worn.” However, he also helps clients who have vintage pieces at home that sit untouched in boxes because they are no longer stylish or are uncomfortable to wear. For these clients, Dwaine is happy to refashion the material and create something that will be a pleasure to wear. When melting and reusing precious metals, Dwaine cautions that some recycled pieces may not work as well as customers hope. “Gold chains are actually one-third solder,” he explains, “and white gold doesn’t melt well because most of it is rhodium-plated.”Yellow gold, though? “There’s no limit to how many times yellow gold can be melted down.” If you have questions about what it will take to refashion your vintage pieces, Dwaine is happy to answer them. Besides selling handcrafted jewelry, Goldsmith Silversmith also offers an extensive selection of fine rosaries. What a precious gift for Christmas, confirmation, or baptism! They repair and clean jewelry, too, including pearl knotting, ring re-sizing, and laser welding. Watch batteries can also be replaced without scheduling an appointment. Be sure to check out the store’s website (goldsmithsilversmith.com) for more information about their services and an eye-popping portfolio of jewelry created by Dwaine and other talented artists. The images are sure to spark your imagination and compel you to visit Goldsmith Silversmith for unique artistic adornments that you will enjoy for a lifetime. Goldsmith Silversmith is open seven days a week at 1019 Howard Street, in the Old Market. Call 402-342-1737 or visit goldsmithsilversmith.com to learn more. December 2021

Plants I Love to Grow…

And Plants I’ll Never Grow Again

By Linda Sutherland

Have you ever had high hopes for a new plant and then watched as it slowly withered and died? You try to figure out what you did wrong, but nothing jumps out at you. This has happened to me many times. In the hope that you’ll be able to learn from my experience, I am going to share with you a few examples of plants I will never plant again as well as some that I recommend to always put in your garden. Nothing is more disappointing than to be optimistic about some stunning plant, plant it within the recommended parameters, take great care with its growth, and have it wilt away and unceremoniously die. The next step, after a brief period of mourning, is to try and figure out why the plant in question died. Sometimes you can figure it out, and sometimes you cannot, but you don’t have to try again if you don’t want to! Let us take a look at some plants that will never darken the door of my garden again. It saddens me to say this, but I will never again grow delphiniums (also known as larkspur)! You see them in your local nursery, standing tall with stunning spikes of purples, lavenders, and pinks. Your grandmother probably had them in a lovely cottage garden, and they were utterly charming. Alas, they have never performed well for me. They prefer moist, cool summers and they never fare well in hot, dry weather.

Finally, after several seasons of flops, I realized that in my part of the world there is no such thing as a cool summer, so delphiniums were never going to succeed. They are also very susceptible to slugs and are just too finicky for me. In the interest of saving you time and heartache, I would stay away from delphiniums. Second on my list are tea roses. Yes, I said it—even as a rose lover! These fusspots are off my list and out of my garden. Are they exquisite and beautiful? Why, yes, they are. Do they come with frustrating susceptibility to pests and diseases? Why, yes, they do. They are routinely attacked by fungal pathogens like powdery mildew and rust. Insects also love to attack tea roses, specifically mites and leafhoppers…and did I mention they can get viral infections? Nope, not in my garden. They are too much trouble and require lots of coddling. The great strength of the Virginia creeper is its ability to

spread quickly. As with many things in the garden, that strength is also its downfall. This stuff grows like it is running a race and then it just becomes a nuisance. I love to see it climbing up a fence or railing. With time, however, it tries to grow over everything. It produces a berry that is highly toxic and can even be fatal to humans. As luck would have it, it also likes to grow with poison ivy! So, no, I do not recommend this enthusiastic, aggressive creeper that has the power to choke out anything in its path. Trumpet vine is a rapid grower and is great for covering fences and screens in your yard, but you’d better hope your neighbors like it, too, because it has no problem moving next door. It can climb trees to ascend forty feet or more, and its roots spread underground, far from the original plant, popping up all over, uninvited. It is like a distant relative who comes for a visit and stays too long. Never fear—there are many stress-free plants that you can grow with confidence once you’ve crossed these bossy fussbudgets off your list. I always have and always will plant hostas. They are a gardener’s answer to solid coverage in problem shade areas. They are not picky and they do not require special attention. Another plant that I always recommend is Russian sage. You cannot beat this plant for durability and stamina. It is a winner—just plant it and forget it. What could be easier? The lavender flowers are strikingly beautiful and make quite an impact when planted in a grouping. The nectar-rich blooms of purple coneflowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and they actually like hot, sunny weather. Coreopsis will always be in my garden because it is such a tough native plant that can thrive even in poor soil. Black-eyed Susans are also drought-tolerant, and pollinators just love them. They seem like a happy plant to me. I also love Baptisia or false indigo. It is a reliable plant that can last for decades. Here’s to a fuss-free garden next year! Seasons of Life

Hospice Vs. Palliative Care Understanding the Difference

By Linda Barnes

When you or a loved one needs specialized care during the treatment of a serious illness, palliative care can significantly improve quality of life, easing symptoms and providing support. Hospice care, on the other hand, brings comfort to those experiencing a terminal illness. Both specialties address the challenges and improve the well-being of patient and caregiver. The aims of hospice and palliative care are similar, but they are not the same. Palliative care occurs along with treatment. Hospice is for when recovery is not expected and curative treatment is stopped. Hospice or palliative care can be provided at home, in an assisted living facility, in a nursing home, or in the hospital. Additionally, hospice care may be provided in a facility dedicated to end-of-life care. People who are likely to benefit from palliative care could have one of many serious illnesses, including AIDS, COPD, cancer, dementia, congestive heart failure, end stage kidney or liver disease, ALS, Parkinson’s, and stroke. Care focuses on physical, mental, and emotional needs during treatment. The type of care depends on the individual’s needs. Physical support might include pain relief. Breathing issues, nausea, fatigue, or insomnia are among other symptoms that may be addressed in palliative care. Mental health and spiritual needs are addressed, as well. Those in palliative care can receive life-prolonging medications or other treatment options. It is a multi-disciplinary

approach, with a team that might include a physician, nurse, social worker, dietitian, and spiritual counselor. The palliative care team provides an additional layer of support, working with the patient’s doctor to improve quality of life for the patient as well as the patient’s family and caregivers. Hospice care does not focus on curing the patient or extending life. It comes into play when a disease is not responding to treatment and the patient likely has only a few months to live. With hospice, the focus is on improving quality of life. Pain control is often an important consideration, while unnecessary tests and medicine are discontinued. Patients may still receive medications like blood pressure meds. My father received supplemental oxygen to ease his breathing issues when he was in hospice care. If at home, the patient’s family is coached in care while both patient and family prepare for the end of life. As with palliative care, hospice care is a team effort. The hospice care team may include physician, nurse, social worker, spiritual advisor, and trained volunteers. Hospice also may

provide short-term respite care when the primary caregiver needs a break. The financial considerations can be complicated, and the care team can help you understand them. With Medicare or Medicaid, most hospice services are likely covered. The Medicare-certified hospice provider should be able to confirm your coverage. If a patient has private insurance, the insurance company can advise how or whether insurance will pay for hospice care. Medicare B may help cover medically necessary services and supplies for palliative care. Mental health care and durable medical equipment may also be covered. Medicare Advantage plans may provide further coverage. Veterans’ palliative care may be covered through the Department of Veterans Affairs. For insurance coverage, a medical doctor must make a referral to the palliative care specialist. Some additional areas of assistance might include coordination of transportation, meal deliveries, or other needed support. Timing is an important concept with both hospice and palliative care. It is generally recommended that a referral to palliative services should occur sooner rather than later so the patient can benefit the most from relief from symptoms and the stress of a serious illness. Hospice care, by definition, addresses the last few months of life. In most cases, a person’s doctor determines that the disease is not responding to curative treatment and that the patient likely has less than six months to live. In some cases, the patient decides not to continue with life-prolonging treatment. It can be hard to accept that the time for hospice care has arrived, since it means the end of a person’s life. Sometimes, a patient or family will delay hospice care and miss out on the benefits of pain relief, caregiver support, and the comfort that can be achieved. Hospice services are a source of great relief to the 70 percent of Americans who say they would prefer to die at home. They also support the family member or friend who provides the bulk of daily care. Hospice workers help prepare both for the end of life. Whether you are navigating through treatment for a serious illness or coming to terms with the end of life, palliative and hospice care can improve quality of life for everyone concerned. Local Holiday Shopping Gifts That Give More!

By Maria Harding

Take a moment to recall the most memorable gifts you’ve received over the years. They are likely to be the more unusual items—a handmade mug, a punch-card for free car washes, a vintage jacket with pearlized buttons—and not standard items mailed directly from a national chain store. Creative gift giving is just one of the many benefits of shopping locally. When we browse favorite neighborhood shops, we open ourselves up to the possibility of stumbling across the perfect items for our loved ones. Shopping locally also keeps communities strong by invigorating the regional economy, employing our neighbors, and keeping storefronts lit and sidewalks active. Buzzing shopping districts add to the livability, value, and safety of nearby residential areas. This vitalization is particularly important now, as local business owners struggle to recover from the disruption due to the pandemic. The income that these owners and employees earn is, in turn, spent at other neighborhood auto repair garages, laundromats, and so on. Online shopping is indeed tempting. It’s convenient to have things delivered, never requiring us to leave our homes. This convenience is the primary reason for the success of online retail giants, and we certainly took advantage of it during the beginning of the pandemic, when we were doing our best not to leave our homes at all. However, relying exclusively on factory shipping hubs means that local stores will eventually wither and disappear. Shopping online poses another poten-

tially time-squandering risk—never seeing items in person may result in purchases of questionable quality or inaccurate size and color. Do you need to send the gift to a remote location? That may be another reason you think online shopping is best, but many local stores offer comparable rates for shipping. To stay competitive, most small retailers in your city are happy to send gifts directly, and they may offer personal touches to their interior packaging, including colored tissue paper, curling ribbon, or information about the artisans. Alternatively, you can festively prepare and box items at home and then arrange to have several packages picked up from your home at once, saving you a trip to the post office. The same convenient package delivery that made online shopping so appealing works just as smoothly in reverse. Local shopping for local recipients can also cut down on the costs of shipping, both for you and for the environment.

Of course, products in local stores may also be made far away before they arrive at the store, but many smaller shops carry items that were made by local artists with locally sourced components. As a shopper, you might consider gravitating toward businesses that are aligned with your values. Perhaps you are drawn to a shop owned by a family who has recently emigrated. Maybe you look for stores that highlight locally sourced items. Christian bookstores might appeal to shoppers who place faith centrally this season. There are local businesses that offer a portion of proceeds to support non-profits or that publicly commit to equitable employment practices. With a little bit of background digging, local shoppers can extend the influence of their holiday budgets in meaningful ways. No time to just browse from store to store? No problem. You can still have the same positive impact on your community by purchasing gift cards for locally owned restaurants, cleaning services, and salons. Friends and family will undoubtedly appreciate receiving memberships to area nature centers or museums, or will delight in a season subscription to a performing arts organization. Annual memberships and services for pampering are perfect gifts because they are luxuries that people often find too indulgent to buy for themselves. It’s important to help local businesses finish the year strong. A good economic showing in the last quarter may help owners determine whether or not to keep their doors open. Shop now rather than waiting until the eleventh hour to hunt for gifts. If you do find yourself buying a last-minute gift, there is no sweeter solution than having a local bakery or chocolatier tie up a box to go! Make your neighborhood part of a city worth living in. Find joy in the smiles and warm reception you’ll receive at the counter of a local business. Through casual conversation, you may find you have a lot in common with the owner or employees. You may have the chance to sip a complimentary cider as you peruse a store, listening to holiday hits from past decades. The gifts you share will be treasured, and the recipients are likely to remember that they came from you. Beyond this, the dollars you spend will also have an enduring impact on the community you love! Sources for this article included: ced.msu. edu, cnbc.com, and cntraveler.com.

Is Your Car Ready for Winter? Prepare to Take on Ice and Snow

By Linda Sutherland

It’s that time of year again…when we prepare ourselves, our homes, and our yards to hunker down for the big freeze. What about the car? We all know that the inclement weather is coming. We need to be prepared to get where we need to go, whether we’ve been set upon by freezing rain, blowing snow, icy sleet, or whatever exactly they mean by“wintry mix.”Let’s take a look at a checklist of all the items that need attention in the car. The first thing on your list should be tires. How is the tread? If your tires are worn, you may have more trouble stopping on slippery roads, and your resistance to hydroplaning will be reduced. My advice would be to stop at your local tire store and have a qualified person check the tread. When the temperature drops, my tires quite often lose pressure. Each 10-degree drop in outside temperature can mean a one-pound loss in air pressure. Consequently, I check the pressure often in the winter. The best time to check the pressure is when the tires are cold (before driving the car). Batteries are another winter problem because batteries, like me, prefer warm weather. If you had difficulty with your battery this summer, you are going to have more issues with it in the winter. If it is an older battery, just invest in a new one. Changing your oil is also a critical part of preparing your vehicle for winter. Freezing weather thickens engine oil, making it difficult for parts to turn and for the engine to start. This, in turn, puts a strain on the starter and the battery. Vehicle manufacturers have been innovating, and many new vehicles have great tech additions for vehicle safety. These include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic warning, and blind spot warning. Some cars even come with automatic emergency braking. Roadside assistance can literally be a lifesaver in severe weather situations. Most new vehicles come with an emergency roadside plan you may purchase. OnStar plans for emergency services are available in GM vehicles like Cadillac, GMC, Buick, and Chevrolet. Other roadside assistance services include AAA, Good Sam Club (for RVs), and Better World Club (known for their environmental friendliness). Check with each website for prices and coverage. Serious engine damage can occur if your vehicle doesn’t have enough anti-freeze in its system, so frequent checking of the amount of coolant is prudent. Make sure you purchase the correct coolant for your engine (ask your mechanic). Now is also the time to 52

December 2021

have your wires and belts checked for cracks and wear and your hoses checked for leaks. In cold temperatures, hoses can become brittle and easily fail. A broken hose or belt can leave you stranded on the side of the road, so it’s important to find the weak spots ahead of time. I am guilty of forgetting the next one on the list: Check your wiper blades! If they are worn, replace them. I have memories of flipping on the wipers to combat the slush building up on my windshield, only to find that my worn wiper blades were useless—that is just dangerous! It’s also important to check your windshield fluid tank frequently. Make sure the liquid selected will not freeze when the temperature hits zero…or 20 below. I recommend that you carry a container of windshield fluid in your trunk, just in case. During the cold months, I keep an extra bag in my trunk. I always have at least two ice scrapers (yes, I have actually broken one while trying to scrape ice). I like to have one short one and one long one that includes a snow brush. I also carry a shovel in my trunk in case I get stuck and need to clear a path. There is also always a blanket in my trunk—you never know if you will need one to keep warm. A first aid kit is inexpensive and could be vital in any kind of weather. A flashlight is also an important tool. It gets dark early in the winter! If you get stranded, it could make you visible to others. You should also keep jumper cables in the trunk. If you need a refresher course on how to use them, just ask your mechanic. Of course, you should always keep a few bottles of water and some shelf-stable snacks in the car, along with a phone charger. Prepare yourself and your vehicle for winter, and you can enjoy traveling with confidence during the cold months! Enterprising Ideas

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask: What’s In It for Me?

By Marge Shoemaker

As a consumer, are you often frustrated by how much time it takes to identify qualified vendors who have the products and services you need for a large event or project? As a business owner or salesperson, do you dread making sales calls on people who may not even be interested in your product or service? If you recognize yourself, a friend, or an acquaintance in one of these scenarios, then you’re reading the right article. Steve Oleen, the founder and president of What’s In It For Me (WIIFM), has been a salesperson for a good part of his life. “I got tired of cold calls, missed sales, and time-consuming door-to-door appeals,” he recalls. “I wanted a way to find out who was in the market for my product and had the authority to make the purchase.” After more than a decade of trial and error, Steve and his partners came up with an idea that worked and started whatsinitforme.com. There are three parts to the WIIFM concept: the Buyer, the Information Partner (the person who alerts WIIFM to the Buyer’s needs), and the Sales Professionals (the vendors qualified to meet those needs). WIIFM works by linking these three parties together in a way that benefits all three. First, the Buyer is planning an event or taking on a large project. As Buyers make decisions about the process, they’ll likely consult with friends, coworkers, or neighbors. That friend, coworker, or neighbor becomes the Information Partner by contacting WIIFM and relating the scope of the project. (The Buyer may also become the Information Partner by contacting WIIFM directly.) WIIFM then searches their list of Sales Professionals to find those whose products or services meets the needs and scope of the project. Finally, WIIFM supplies the Buyer with the name, contact information, and qualifications of Sales Professionals they deem qualified. If the Buyer approves, WIIFM gives the Sales Professionals the Buyer’s information. “In the WIIFM scenario, everyone wins,” Steve says. The Sales Professionals pay a fee to become members of WIIFM. In return, they gain responsible, interested prospects for the purchase of their product or service without the time and frustration of cold calls. The Information Partner gets paid a fee for providing WIIFM with the lead to the need. The Buyer gets to purchase a service or product from a vetted and qualified Sales Professional without having to do the work of researching vendors. For example, let’s say you’re planning a wedding. There are fifteen product categories that provide services for weddings, and most generally not an overlap in vendors. An example of this is an event venue that also handles the catering. “Imagine how easy it would be to plan a wedding, and how much commission the bride could earn after they make the purchases,” says Steve. WIIFM confirms with you the scope of your project and

then goes to work compiling a list of vetted vendors for your consideration, Steve Oleen, President submitting each individually to you in a separate email. You reply regarding which vendors you are interested in talking to. WIIFM then gives those vendors the okay to contact you, after which you and the vendors will speak directly about whether or not you would like to work together. What a convenience! You’re able to make an informed decision without having to spend your time researching, tracking down, and vetting vendors. As Steve says, it’s called “leveraging the competition.” WIIFM has also designed networking chapters for business owners and sales professionals to eliminate the need for prospecting (looking for prospective buyers) and cold calling…all the “pain and hassle from the sales process” that frustrated Steve in the beginning of his career. “Over the years,” Steve points out, “networking groups have become more social than business-related. The WIIFM Networking Chapter members, for a small fee, are introduced to what are called APIX Referrals. These are Class A prospects with an intent to buy and an invitation to call.” According to the WIIFM Networking brochure, “prospecting requires 80 percent of a salesperson’s time, money, and effort… membership in WIIFM Networking gains the results of five sales reps selling the old way.” Network members may also become Information Partners for each other. Bob Wynn is registered as a Sales Professional with WIIFM, and he couldn’t be more pleased with the results. “Before WIIFM,” Bob says, “I was spending 80 percent of my time cold calling people who weren’t ready for my service yet. Now, I only call on prospects who are actually expecting my call.” This gives Bob more time to provide his services to his customers. Find out what’s in it for you! Visit WIIFM online at whatsinitforme.com for more information. You can learn how to join WIIFM as a Buyer, an Information Partner, or a Sales Professional. Keep the Holidays Happy for Pets Precautions for Safe Celebrations

By Jackie Byers

The joyful holiday season is here, and we have many reasons to give thanks and celebrate. However, it’s important to remember that the season we love to celebrate can present serious dangers for our pets. Be sure that your celebrations are safe for both you and your furry friends! Have your vet on speed dial, just in case, and jot down the number for the ASPCA poison control hotline: 888-426-4435. Dogs and cats often do not want to celebrate the way humans do. In fact, noisy gatherings in your home can be very stressful for them. Be proactive by providing your pet with a quiet retreat when the company is coming. If you want to introduce your pet to your guests, do it at the beginning of the party, and then secure your pet in a quiet location with water, a favorite chew toy, and a blanket. Separating your pet and your guests also helps ensure that your pet does not get into the holiday treats you provide for your human friends. Your guests may

54 Rotary Empower.indd

not know that alcohol, even in small amounts, can be toxic to your pets. Other human foods that should never be shared with your pet include chocolate, raisins, grapes, avocados, bacon, garlic, onions, and coffee. Small pets don’t weigh much, so even small amounts of these foods these can make your pet very sick or worse.

Guests may know not to feed your pets, but pets are curious by nature. If someone sets down a glass of wine or a canapé to hug a friend, a pet who is roaming free at the party may take a taste to see what it is. As all pet owners know, pets usually sniff and taste anything you offer. That does not mean it is good for them. Other attractive dangers are plentiful during the season. Before getting started on your holiday decorating, add tubing for electrical wires to your shopping list. Because pets tend to chew anything they get their teeth into and holiday lights tend stay on all the time, tubing can prevent facial burns and electrical shocks for your animal. Unfortunately, many house plants are not good for curious pets. Poinsettias and winterberry, so popular for the holidays, are dangers for pets, as are tinsel, ornaments, ribbons, and tree needles. When setting up the tree, be sure it is secure in its stand and anchor it to a wall. My dog once toppled our tree in the middle of the night. Ornaments were lost, but—thankfully—he was not injured. He did look embarrassed. Children’s toys can be dangerous chewing temptations. Play-Doh and batteries, both common stocking stuffers, can be highly toxic if ingested. They should be kept out of pets’ reach. Enlist your children’s help to do this. If you leave your pet at home during holiday travel, you should hire someone to take care of your pet. Pet boarding can be a great option for highly social animals; a pet sitter who comes to your home daily might be better for pets

who prefer the routine of home. If you take your pet traveling, consider microchipping before you go. Investing in a smart collar for your traveling pet is also a great precaution. It allows you to track your pet anywhere. Walking your dog daily is good for you both. During winter, plan to take shorter, more frequent walks. Shorter walks limit exposure for both of you and make you both more willing walkers. An animal’s paw pads are very sensitive and can be harmed by both cold and chemicals. The rock salt used to de-ice sidewalks is bad for pets’ paws and can be fatal if ingested. It should be thoroughly removed when your walk is done so your pet doesn’t lick it off. When you get home, dip each paw in warm water to wash. Dry paws thoroughly. Be sure to clean your pet’s stomach area, also. Just because your pet needs a different kind of holiday celebration than you do, that doesn’t mean they can’t get in on the fun! New chew toys or extra favorite snacks (in small quantities) are great gift ideas that your pet is sure to appreciate. Follow your vet’s advice on both. Prepare for the holidays by talking to your vet to learn other ways to ensure a healthy season. Ask your vet about your particular breed to get insights about how the holidays may affect your pet. Exercising extra caution is better than experiencing regret! Set yourself up to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season with family, friends, and pets. Specializing in Positive Reinforcement Training Positive reinforcement training uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog’s behavior. Physical Therapy

Improving Mobility and Function

By Angella A. Arndt

Do you have limited mobility? Balance issues? Chronic pain? Consider physical therapy for relief! Physical therapy helps patients restore or improve mobility, range of motion, and physical function through stretches, exercise, and other physical activities. Physical therapy may be beneficial for individuals who have certain illnesses or who are recovering from injury or surgery. Physical therapy should not be confused with occupational therapy. Although both types of therapy provide rehabilitative care, there are some distinct differences. Occupational therapy focuses on helping patients improve the specific motor skills they need to perform daily activities at home, school, or work. These activities may include household chores, bathing, dressing, and eating. Occupational therapists may also suggest changes at home or work to help patients perform these activities better. Physical therapy can treat a wide variety of health issues. You may be surprised to learn that, in addition to treating sports injuries and aiding post-surgical rehabilitation, physical therapy can also help with women’s and men’s health issues. While many athletes seek physical therapy to treat sports injuries, physical therapy can also help prevent injuries. Improper movement, posture, or muscle imbalances may cause pain that can lead to injury. Physical therapists help athletes prevent injuries and maximize performance by developing programs that address muscle weakness and imbalance with targeted strengthening exercises and stretches. Often, physical therapy is prescribed for post-surgical rehabilitation to aid in the recovery process. Joint replacements, as well as surgeries of the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, foot and ankle, and cervical and lumbar spine, commonly involve physical therapy. Benefits include improving movement and range of motion, muscle strengthening, and pain reduction in the surgical area. Treatment may begin at the hospital and continue with regular home or outpatient visits until rehabilitation goals are achieved. Physical therapy can help with several women’s health issues. Treatment plans can be developed for conditions such as incontinence, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, lymphedema, pelvic pain, and pregnancy-related pain. Treatment for incontinence issues includes relaxation techniques, bladder retraining exercises, core strengthening, posture correction, and muscle strengthening. Osteoporosis treatment includes exercises to correct posture, improve balance, and build bone or decrease bone loss. Fibromyalgia pain may be reduced with stretching, range of motion exercises, deep tissue massages, and hydrotherapy with ice and heat packs. Treating lymphedema may include exercise, manual lymphatic drainage, and compression bandaging to reduce and control swelling. Pelvic floor physical therapy uses exercises to relax and 56

December 2021

strengthen pelvic muscles to alleviate pelvic pain. Pregnancy-related back, hip, and pelvic pain can be helped with strength, flexibility, posture, and alignment exercises. Physical therapy can also help male conditions like chronic prostatitis, pelvic pain, testicular or penile pain, and sexual dysfunction. Physical therapy can help these issues with exercise programs, neuromuscular re-education, manual therapy, pelvic floor exercises, and muscle biofeedback training. What should you expect when visiting a physical therapist? Your therapist will ask health questions, do a complete exam, check your mobility and movement, help you set goals, and develop a treatment plan. Your treatment plan may include exercises to perform at home and instructions on modifying activities at home and work. One of the first things to consider when choosing a physical therapist is their education and licensing. Physical therapists must complete an accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, although this degree wasn’t offered until the mid-1990s. Consequently, qualified physical therapists who were educated before that time may not have a DPT. All therapists must be licensed in the state in which they are practicing. Asking questions will help you choose a physical therapist who is right for you. Do they have the skills to treat your specific issue? Will they develop an individualized treatment plan to meet your needs and goals? Do they accept your insurance plan? How do they make you feel? Are they actively involved in your treatment or primarily relying on machines? Do they provide education? Do they give you work to do at home? Education and continuing your treatment at home are essential components of an effective treatment plan. You can ask your physician for a recommendation, but you don’t necessarily need a physician’s referral for physical therapy. Many states allow what is known as direct access. For example, if you are experiencing pain because of a pulled muscle or sprain, you can decide for yourself if you need to see a physical therapist. Check with your state’s licensing entity to see if you have direct access. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether physical therapy may be a good option for you. This conservative approach may help you achieve improved mobility, increased strength, and less pain, so you’ll be able to get back to enjoying your favorite activities. Home Works

Home Fire Prevention Keep Your Household Safe

By Anne Yankus

When was the last time you brushed up on your fire safety information? Was it about the same time you learned to“stop, drop, and roll”at school? With holiday decorating coming up, it’s a great time to get yourself up to date on all the best practices to help prevent fires in and around your home. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the leading causes of fire in the home are cooking, heating (space heaters), electrical, smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes), and candles. With that in mind, you may be wondering about precautions that you can take to keep your family and your home safe from fire-related accidents this season. The NFPA has several recommendations, including choosing flame resistant/flame retardant holiday decorations, keeping lit candles away from flammable items, replacing strings of lights that may have worn-out cords or loose bulbs, not linking more than three strands of lights together, staying in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop, asking smokers to smoke outdoors, keeping your tree away from heat sources, and regularly watering a live tree (to keep it from getting too dry). When you’re searching for empty wall outlets to plug in your holiday decorations, it may be tempting to daisy-chain

n tis' the seaso

extension cords or load up one outlet with several plugs and add-ons. Resist that urge! Overloading an electrical outlet is a very real concern and a common cause of electrical fires. Be on the lookout for these telltale signs that an outlet may be overloaded: dimming lights, buzzing outlets and switches, outlet and switch covers that are warm to the touch, burning odors, scorched plugs, and power tools, appliances, or electronics that lack sufficient power. You can prevent overloads by spreading out electrical devices across multiple outlets and power circuits. If that fails, call an electrician for advice. Though it is not directly related to the holidays, another common cause of home fires during the winter months is the clothes dryer. To keep your dryer running safely, you can read the manufacturers’ instructions and warnings, make sure the dryer is connected properly (with the correct plug and outlet—if you’re unsure of this, best to consult a professional), clean the lint filter before and after each use, regularly

If your dryer is taking longer than normal to dry clothes, it’s time to have it cleaned by a professional. The Grout Doctor.indd 1 11/2/20 10:52 Peterson.indd AM 1 7/9/21 To make sure your alarms are running at peak capacity, experts recommend testing them on a monthly basis. Most alarms have a button on the exterior of the alarm that you can press to run a quick test. The standard recommendation for residential smoke alarms is to have one on each floor of the house and one in each sleeping area. Last but not least is your family’s emergency fire plan. Take into consideration things like how everyone will receive emergency alerts and warnings, evacuation routes from every room, the household communication plan, and whether you need an emergency preparedness kit. If you have small children in your household, it’s good idea to practice your evacuation routes and how to access them (unlocking and opening windows, removing screens, and so on). There’s no one way to avoid home fires. Between prevention, detection, and a solid emergency plan, you should be able to keep yourself and your family and pets safe— and, hopefully, save your home from harm this season. Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology Innovative Urology Treatments

By Angella A. Arndt

Do you suffer from a urologic problem that makes life uncomfortable or difficult? Symptoms like bladder control issues, difficulty or pain urinating, frequent urination, or pain in your groin or lower stomach region may be signs of health issues that need treatment. The Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology team specializes in treating urological conditions, diseases, and cancers of the kidneys, bladder, and prostate. Their patients include men, women, and children. Dr. Euclid DeSouza founded Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology, and the practice has grown to include 10 physicians—seven board-certified urologists and three board-certified urogynecologists. (Urogynecology is a subspecialty of urology that specializes in the care of female pelvic floor disorders.) One of the team’s physicians is Dr. Rebecca McCrery, a board-certified urogynecologist. Her father was a doctor, and Dr. McCrery has known since she was very young that she wanted to enter the medical field. Dr. McCrery earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed her obstetrics and gynecology residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus. At Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Dr. McCrery completed fellowships in pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery as well as in female urology and voiding dysfunction. She has been in practice in Omaha since 2006. The team offers a broad spectrum of treatment options in state-of-the-art facilities. Some of the many conditions they treat include kidney stones, kidney disease and failure, incontinence, bladder issues, and urologic cancers of the bladder, kidneys, prostate, and testicles. Specialists treat men’s health issues like erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate, and low testosterone; they also perform vasectomies. The team also has specialists to treat women’s health issues like bladder prolapse, overactive bladder, and interstitial cystitis; they also perform hysterectomies, primarily for prolapse. According to the Urology Care Foundation, “a quarter to a third of men and women in the U.S. suffer from urinary incontinence.” Contributing factors to urinary incontinence, also known as loss of bladder control, include pregnancy and delivery of children, prostate problems, and aging. There are several types of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence is when increased pressure causes the bladder to leak. This may occur with exercise, bending, lifting, or coughing and sneezing. Overactive bladder is the sudden urge to urinate, even when the bladder is not full. These conditions can greatly reduce your quality of life. The good news is that they can be treated and managed. Dr. McCrery notes that stress urinary incontinence has traditionally been treated with a sling procedure. This procedure involves placing a piece of synthetic mesh or a person’s 62

own tissue to support the Dr. Rececca J. McCrery, MD, FACOG, FACS urethra and bladder neck. It is effective but involves at least a two-week recovery period. The physicians at Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology have a new option available. “A bulking agent called Bulkamid has been used in Europe for over 10 years and was approved by the FDA in February 2020,” Dr. McCrery reports. The practice began offering this innovative treatment a little over a year ago. The procedure involves injecting Bulkamid into the wall of the urethra, near the bladder. This helps control the flow of urine and provides support by adding volume to the wall of the urethra. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting with a local numbing medicine, and there is no recovery time. Some patients may require a second injection for optimal results. “Bulkamid has been a game-changer for my practice in the past year,” Dr. McCrery asserts. Dr. McCrery emphasizes that Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology is committed to offering innovative treatments. “Being a private practice and having our own surgery center allows us to bring in new products and implement new procedures more quickly than is possible at a large hospital or institution. We are involved in research projects and can offer options that haven’t been FDA-approved, which speaks to our being on the cutting edge. We are experts at what we do, with more experience than anyone else in the region.” Dr. McCrery relates the importance of partnering with patients to find solutions for their problems. “It means a lot when patients tell us they appreciate being heard and are happy with their results. It’s rewarding to see them get back to enjoying life. It’s about empowering them to live their lives to the fullest.” Adult Pediatric Urology & Urogynecology is located at 10707 Pacific Street, in Omaha. Call 402-397-7989 to schedule an appointment. Positive Perspective

Be Happy!

By Janet Van deWalle

“Become the kind of person who brightens a room just by entering it.” —H. Jackson Brown

when Manny starts his magic. The reality is that it makes running errands a whole lot more enjoyable for him, for me, and for everyone he connects with.

That would be my husband, Manny. He is happy just about all the time. He says hi to everyone. When he walks into a store, he immediately connects with whoever is working there. He gets the person’s name and uses it frequently. He laughs, jokes, and makes great eye contact. He is always appreciative of their help. He races ahead of people—both men and women—to open the door for them. The response from the people he meets this way has been…well…fascinating.

Heading out into Omaha with this kind of vibe is a choice that he has made. Manny has learned not to let anyone steal his joy, and he is teaching me to do the same. All of us have free will to decide whether we are going to be upset, angry, sad, or…HAPPY!

“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” — Omar Khayyam

“No one can steal your love, joy, and happiness without your permission.” —Debasish Mridha

What I’ve realized is that many of us are not used to someone smiling authentically while out running errands. A number of us “put on our face” as we move through the grocery store, the gas station, the restaurant, the clothing store, or the hardware store. After all, we are at these places of business to get a job done. We don’t have time to chat. Let’s get going!

Now, I admit, some people initially look at him as if he might be just a little crazy. After all, most of us don’t enter places of business with a huge smile. What happens, though, is that they begin to watch him out of the corner of their eye. Then some of them start smiling a little. Some of them start shaking their head. But the end result? They are smiling. He has taught them it’s okay to smile. It’s okay to be happy. It brings sunshine to their life. That’s one of the many things I have learned from my husband.

“I believe that modern life is moving too fast. A bullet travels quickly, but it usually comes to an abrupt and fatal end.” —Fennel Hudson

When my husband smiles, people can’t help but smile back. He is engaging because he believes in positive reciprocation. I have witnessed grouches lighten up and even smile
