A Special Kind of Beauty September…yikes! Where has summer gone? Before we know it, we’ll be digging out our winter clothes and boots. Nooooo! Oh, well, I guess we’ll deal with it, just like we do every year, here in Omaha. I have lived my entire life in the Big O. Never moved away. For some reason, I have been reflecting about this a lot lately. Part of it has to do with my husband, Manny, who has been around the world 14 times in his Navy career. I can’t even imagine. He would have to move every few years…to a new ship or a new country. Manny has the best sense of direction I have ever seen. When we travel together, we use Siri, but sometimes Manny chooses to veer off the beaten path. I never doubt that he knows where we’re going. It’s very comforting. A few weeks ago, we took a trip to Minneapolis. We ran into a major hold-up on the interstate. Manny just took the next exit, and off we went. We saw some beautiful small towns in Iowa… it was like something out of Norman Rockwell. It was so much better than crawling along the interstate at five miles per hour. While wandering the back roads, we talked about how beautiful the countryside is. No, it’s not Rocky Mountains beautiful, nor is it Atlantic or Pacific Ocean beautiful, but it is very special. It’s a peaceful kind of beauty. I think that is one of the reasons I have stayed so close to home. I wonder if others who were born and raised here feel the same feelings that I do when traveling the back roads. Well, onward into fall. September is a heck of a month for birthdays in my family…my brothers Tom and Greg even share the date! Steve was premature, or they all would have been September 16. Happy birthday to all my wonderful brothers. They are good men who I am proud to call family. It is also Roxy Orr’s birthday this month. Roxy has been my operations manager for over 33 years. Happy birthday, Roxy! We have helped each other get through all kinds of life challenges, and I am very grateful that she has been with me for so long. I am hoping that you all had an opportunity to chill out…at least a little…during the past few months. By the time this issue comes out, kids will be back in school, and life will be moving full speed ahead. We’ll see you next month!

Add 3 cups of good bourbon and freeze (it will be slushy, not solid). To serve, mix a generous scoop (or two) with a fizzy lemon-lime drink. Miss Jeanne’s Labor Day Quiche Cook and crumble 6 pieces of bacon and put into a 10-inch (unbaked) pie shell. Add 8 ounces of grated Monterey or pepper Jack cheese, one 4-ounce can of diced green chilies, and 1 small onion (sliced). In another bowl, mix 1 and 1/2 cups of half and half with 4 eggs. Beat well. Pour the mixture into the pie shell. Bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Let set for 5 minutes before serving. Fresh Blueberry Muffins Cream 1 stick of butter with 1 and 1/4 cups of sugar until fluffy. Stir in 2 eggs. Mix together 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. 1/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of water. Add more salt and pepper, if desired. Fill one pie plate or dish with 2 cups of saltine cracker crumbs and another dish with 1 cup of flour. Heat a bit of canola oil in a large skillet. Dip the tomato slices in the flour and shake off the excess. Dip each slice in the egg mixture and then dip in the cracker crumbs. Fry and flip a few slices at a time until golden. Put on paper towels to drain.
Stuffed Peppers Wash, halve, and seed 4 bell peppers. Lay in a casserole dish. In a bowl, mix 2 cups of cooked corn, 1 can of drained black beans, 1 diced fresh tomato, 3 diced scallions, 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese, and 4 Tablespoons of seasoned bread crumbs. (If you prefer, you can replace some of the corn and beans with cooked ground beef or shredded chicken in the stuffing.) Sprinkle a bit of lime juice over the stuffing and top each pepper with a pat of butter. Put any excess stuffing in the dish. Cover with foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, until the peppers are tender. Add additional grated cheddar a few minutes before cooking time is done.

Fall Impressions Colorful, Cozy Fashion
By Holly Bell
Temperatures may still be on the warm side, but the breeze will turn cool soon and cute outfits for fall will become top of mind. Neutral tones have been trending for a few seasons now and are always classy, but at some point, we all yearn for a color other than gray. This fall, get ready for a little optimism all around, as the trendsetters go for full-on saturated shades.
We will be seeing the color dial turned up on everything, from to cobalt blue to highlighter orange. These statement colors will pack a colorful punch. To highlight these gorgeous brights, black is back and as bold as ever! Let’s face it, we all look and feel good in black. When paired with a winter bright, it is a dynamic contrast that is sure to create head-turning looks! If any fashion lesson was learned from the year 2020, it’s this: Given a choice, customers will choose to be comfortable every time! Even though we are not living in yoga clothing anymore, we have been spoiled by the comfort trend and are not eager to give it up. Designers have taken this to heart and are offering a plethora of fabrics that we will love to wear. From gently tailored blazers and pants to cloud-soft sweaters, look for everything that is super soft and stretchy this fall. We’re not talking sweatpants here! Label favorites have refined these comfy styles, bringing slimming cuts to their designs. Fabrics may be plush and somewhat oversized, but the silhouettes are flattering. Cozy never looked so good! What we need for cooler weather is equally comfortable outerwear. The puffer coat has been gaining momentum for a few winter seasons, and there is no stopping it now. Personally, I was against looking “puffy” when the trend began a few years ago. Since then, I have discovered why people love these lightweight but surprisingly warm coats. Traveling to Chicago one blustery winter in a long wool coat that was warm but also a heavyweight, I ended up purchasing a puffer coat and have not turned back! In earlier years, most puffer coats were purchased in black or beige. Get ready for some fun new intonations! Treat yourself to a bright purple, fire-engine red, or leopard-print puffer to keep up with fall’s colorful trends. Another tip is to make it a midi! The midi length looks great 10

Gather Around the Fireplace Claxton Fireplace Will Build It!
By Janette Calabro
Do you have a dream to remodel or add a fireplace to your home? If so, Dan Claxton, owner of Claxton Fireplace Center, looks forward to“Answering All of Your Burning Questions.”Dan takes pride in answering all his customers’ questions just as intently today as he did 35 years ago, when he was first establishing his business. From initial design to project completion, Dan is committed to what works best for you and your lifestyle. “The biggest advantage of coming here is that we have a consistent team of carpenters, cabinet installers, plumbers, and electricians,” Dan says. “The lion’s share of the work we do is done in-house, so we have the craftsmen, and we lay our own stone and tile. I don’t think anyone in Omaha can lay stone as well as the guys I have working here. They’re very particular.” For example, Dan points out, the stone that a customer chooses for a new or replacement fireplace may not have built-in corners. It takes a real pro to cut the stone and blend the corners, and the Claxton team delivers on that level of detail. Dan is well aware that there is a science behind listening, and he’s been practicing it for decades. He and his team peel back the layers to find out exactly what each client wants and what needs to be done to accomplish it. “It’s all customer-driven,” he says. “It’s our job to get them what they want. If we do the job properly, asking the right questions, customers will know that, ‘These guys really care about me and my needs.’” The whole Claxton team listens with the goal of providing the best service and best product for each customer’s space. Although they do, of course, sell fireplaces, Dan doesn’t think of himself as a person in the sales business. The word “sell,” he says, “implies that you’re talking people into doing what they don’t want to do. I don’t agree with that. I consider myself as a professional who genuinely cares about my customers.” New client Vicki visited Claxton several times before she made up her mind, but the team treated her as professionally as if each visit had been her first. “They were so nice to me! You could talk with any of them and feel as if you were talking to a good friend,” she recalls. “The proposal was quick and fully detailed, and the installers were absolutely awesome. I am so happy with the addition to my patio. I wouldn’t go anywhere else!” Claxton Fireplace Center offers in-house design and installation for brand-new fireplaces or existing fireplaces that need a new look or upgraded function. Wood, gas, and electric fireplaces are all very popular; some even incorporate LED lighting. There are many looks to choose from, too, including a classic traditional look, the ever-appealing rustic feel (think reclaimed barn wood), 12

or a more contemporary fireplace. The facade can be granite, quartz, tile or stone. They also do metal walls, which compleDan Claxton, Owner ment the contemporary styles of today. “What we’re doing a ton of right now is remodeling fireplaces,” says Dan. “Some people may like their existing façade, but if it’s broken or leaks cold air, it may need an improvement.” In many of those cases, Dan shares, it’s not necessary to start fresh—instead, they can do a retrofit, where they take out the old fireplace and put in a new one. “We can ‘surgically’ remove the old fireplace while preserving the façade,” he says. “We can retrofit in a few days, and when we’re all done, you can’t tell we did it. The brand-new unit is extremely efficient and functional, conserving what they already have.” Dan says that stone is the most popular fireplace material right now, especially dry stack ledgestone. Granite and quartz are also trending, especially if you use the same material for your countertops. Dan can also install base cabinets or floating shelves for customers who want to incorporate storage into the fireplace setting. For mantels, wood is always popular. You can even order a wood-look mantel that is actually concrete to help give you the look you want while preserving the mantel clearance for heat. Black is a standout mantel color, as is bronzed iron. For metal mantels, Claxton Fireplace Center carries more than 30 powder-coated colors to fit the look of any room. Claxton Fireplace Center doesn’t do just indoor fireplaces. They also specialize in outdoor kitchens, fire pits, grills and smokers, retractable awnings, and even chimney services. The pandemic opened the door for people to stay home and enjoy their homes and yards more. If you’re looking to make some improvements in the form and function of your home, get in touch with the team at Claxton Fireplace Center. You can reach them at 402-491-0800 or online at claxtonfireplace.com. The showroom is open weekdays at 709 North 132nd Street, in Omaha.

A Woman’s Work
The Secret Lives of Grandmas Happy Grandparents’ Day
By Sharon Knierim
When someone says “grandma,” what image comes to your mind? Is it a picture of a sweet little old lady with her gray hair fashioned into a bun behind her head? Is she wearing an apron with a pocketful of hankies or tissues? In your imagination, I’ll bet she’s busy baking lots of your favorite cookies and then allowing you to consume as many as you want…just before you go home to Mom and Dad. For many of us who have lived for more than a few decades, this may well sound exactly like our grandmas. Today, there is a new creature out there. Granny may still be sweet and kind and be full of good advice (as well as being armed with cookies), but she probably doesn’t spend much of her day wearing an apron. As for tissues, she most likely expects you to get your own. Those cookies that used to fill our tummies have been replaced by fruits and yogurt or other healthier snacks. Have you noticed today’s grandmothers expect everyone to do their own dishes and clean up after themselves? Well, it’s about time. After all, Grandma or Granny or whatever you call her is neither a family employee nor a woman bound over to servitude. Grandma doesn’t sit at home in a rocker anymore, but she still rocks! The modern grandma probably works or volunteers at least part-time. Today, many people are working longer than in the past, and this includes senior women. Women
“of a certain age” have so much to bring to the world of work, whether they are in the corporate world, education, or another field. Their years of experience have brought them valuable skills and knowledge, making them ideal employees. Grandmas these days are also probably still into whatever sporting activities or exercise groups they enjoyed when they were younger. Pilates classes and cardio groups are full of grandmothers! We have to admit that grandmas have lives of their own. Although their adult children and grandchildren remain important elements in their lives, they have developed and maintained interests outside the family group. Have we been abandoned by Grandma? No, we have not. Instead, her life experiences enhance what she has to offer to her family and make her a more interesting and compelling person. Of course,
A Few Words From One of Our Advertisers: “As an advertiser in Women’s Edition since March of 1996, I’d like to take this opportunity to say how pleased we are with the results we have received from being involved with the magazine. Women’s Edition offers a very professional and effective format that allows us to get the message out to women (even men) regarding all the services we provide. We continue to see consistent potential patients flow to our practice from our marketing in Women’s Edition.”

one of the wonderful blessings of an independent grandma is that she is so often willing to share her experiences with us. So, what do grandmas think about when they are out there in the world without us? Well, of course, they are thinking about us…all the time. That’s a given! However, they are also making plans and learning about the world around them. They participate in adventures or gatherings that stimulate their minds and keep them interested in new ideas that offer knowledge and skills from which women “of a certain age” used to be excluded. There is nothing better than spending time with someone who has a good supply of life experiences and is broad-minded. These people are fun! Let me tell you, most of the grandmas I know are extremely fun and inquisitive people, always ready for what is around the next corner. They’ve broken out of the old “grandma” mold, and they’re more interesting for having done it! What do grandmas do when they are not participating in family functions or events? Many of these women like to travel, and many of them travel worldwide. They make new friends and try new endeavors. It’s true that these gals have a few extra years and few extra miles on them, but that is certainly no reason for them to stay at home! If you want to acknowledge or honor your granny, any day of the year is appropriate and will be welcomed by her. Be sure you call ahead to make advance arrangements with this special lady—she might be out traveling the world. Of course, even if you can only catch her on the phone, she’s sure to appreciate the fact that you called to say hello and hear all about her latest adventures. Sunday, September 12, is Grandparents’ Day. It doesn’t get a lot of press, but why not use it as a good starting point to share some quality time with Grandma on a regular basis? Of course, while you’re at it, don’t forget Granddad. After all, he’s a pretty cool cat, himself. If you are blessed with grandparents, give them the most precious gifts of time and of yourself. To all the grandmas and grandpas out there, have a wonderful Grandparents’ Day!

Jay Heffelfinger, owner of Professional Glass Tinting, is more than happy to enhance the performance of the windows in your home. Event Planning Experience the Fun! By Janette Calabro
After the boom in virtual events in 2020, most of us are ready to make plans to get out of the house and enjoy the company of others in real life. Planning is a big part of moving ahead—from budgeting to caterers, let’s take a look at what to consider before the big party. Let’s start with the budget. No matter the type of party, including taxes and additional fees, along with the payment you need to establish your goals. What is most valuable to due date. Is your deposit refundable? corporation division), and be sure to get an invoice and insurance agreement, just as you would for the venue contract. The food and drink during your event can awe your guests and make the party a hit! Food has connected us at gatherings for centuries, so impress the crowd with a caterer who can meet the needs of all your guests. Start by learning your guests’ profiles and preferences. Are there any food allergies to consider? Religious requirements or food intolerances? Some caterers specialize in ethnic foods, healthy choices, gluten-free baking, spicy food, and the like. Once you have a grasp on your food needs, find a caterer who can incorporate everything into a menu for your event. Offer at least two or three choices of entrees, and ease in some seasonally fresh items. To delight everyone, choose one healthy dessert and another one that’s more indulgent. Remember that a caterer arranges the preparation, delivery, and presentation of food for your guests, so be sure to discuss your expectations for a visually colorful meal that smells delectable. Of course, don’t forget to do a tasting! Choosing the right caterer isn’t just about the food; it’s about the whole experience. Ask if the caterer has worked at your venue before, and ask if certain things like gratuities, service fees, and on-site food warmers or refrigerators are included in your contract. Sometimes, simple things like ice, water, and drink mixers are not included, and you don’t want to risk going without. If the caterers don’t provide dishes, serving ware, glassware, and linens, you’ll want to include those items in your party rental contract. What staff do they provide— kitchen staff, servers, bartenders, clean-up staff? Find out how
far in advance of the event they will arrive to set up. What about invitations? From bubbly cocktail designs to classic flat party invites, the sky’s the limit for invitation options. Watercolor invitations are trending for romantic events such as an engagement party. Envelope lining and gold print are hot this year, too, as are foil printing, monograms, and a touch of metallic and glitter. Be sure to confirm with your printer that your invitations will be ready in time to mail. The timing of when you mail the invitations usually depends on the type of event (more formal events need more lead time). The best rule of thumb is to mail four weeks before the party date, though you might want to give guests more notice if your party coincides with a major party holiday like Halloween or New Year’s Eve. Set the RSVP deadline for somewhere around two weeks before the event. RSVP means “respond, please,” but some invitees won’t. You’ll probably hear back from about half the people you invite. For the sake of your overall party plan (and your caterers, who have to decide how much food to prepare), it’s best to assume that some people who didn’t respond will still show up. Expect about 85 percent of invitees to attend (around 55 percent of those who live out of town). Whether you’re hiring a fire dancer for a flamingo luau, gathering for a traditional dinner party, or kicking up your boots for a barn dance, remember that a party is a great mood lifter. We all need that! Plan ahead and you’ll get to enjoy the party, too. Sources for this article included: realsimple.com, socialtables. com, and hgtv.com.

Stark Media Films Stark Media was born out of a six-year stint as IT/desktop support for a large credit card processing company. I then stumbled onto an opportunity to make “videos” for that same company. I said yes. My role was to produce in-house corporate marketing videos. Having no real experience as a videographer, I had to adopt the “fake it ‘til you make it” mentality...and it worked. Fast forward three years. The excitement was missing, I was yearning for more meaningful projects. I became complacent and uninspired. Although it did put food on the table, I yearned to produce something with more impact and meaning. Then along came another opportunity to help produce a short film about Alzheimers. That changed the game for me. This is what I was reaching for. Real stories, real people who inspire and provoke viewers. It was the most challenging endeavor I had done at the time. Understanding how to tell a strong story in the least amount of time, and how to engage the viewer for the duration of the piece, is not easy. Our purpose is to make something powerful, moving, and memorable. Recently, we produced a “Memory” video for a retired couple. Their story was captivating and powerful. Everybody has a story just waiting to be told. What’s your story?

Great Escapes
St. George, Utah
Your Greater Zion Stopover By Jackie Williams
I have passed by St. George, Utah, dozens of times without stopping. During the past few trips, however, I decided to stop and explore this city, and it has become my new road trip stopover destination. What changed my mind? After spending one night, then two, I have found that St. George has a lot to offer travelers and is definitely worth a couple nights of exploration. The first time we stopped in St. George, we were pulling a camper, so we stayed at an RV park and biked around town. We came across free movies in the park, where the locals were hanging out, and then moved along to a soda shop. The evening was bustling, and there was plenty to keep us entertained. The weather was great, with the warm night air making it very comfortable. Our second trip was a golf stopover. It was hard to choose from the dozens of golf courses in the Greater Zion area. I booked a tee time at nearby Hurricane’s Sky Mountain Golf Course. It did not disappoint! The views were amazing, the greens were perfect, and the course was right at my level—a little challenging, but not too much. We found ourselves taking photos at just about every tee box. Simply beautiful! It really whet our appetite for taking a full golf trip to St. George. Have your travel agent set you up with a stay-andplay package so you can play at a couple of different courses. My next golf trip was Sand Hollow and Copper Rock. Sand Hollow’s Champion Course is rated the #1 Best Golf Course in Utah by GOLFMagazine. Golfweek named it one of the Top 100 Resort courses in the United States and #1 in Utah since 2009. Oh, and did I mention its award-winning clubhouse, one of the most beautiful in the nation? Even if you don’t golf, you should check it out for its architecture and views. Those red rocks are impressive! Copper Rock is the area’s newest golf course, which opened February of 2020. Their website boasts that “on every hole, players are treated to sweeping vistas of the grandeur offered by the Pine Valley Mountains, the Hurricane Cliffs, Zion National Park, and beyond.” That sounds good to me! What else is there to do in St. George and the Greater Zion area? Plenty! How about camping? You can stay in the traditional or national park campgrounds, or you can glamp it. There are several glamping retreats to consider, like Zion Weeping Buffalo Resort and Zion Wildflower Resort, where the hard part is deciding if you want to stay in a cabin, tepee, or covered wagon. Those properties are on plenty of
land, so you can take advantage of all the open space by enjoying river walks by the water, buffalo viewing in the pastures, and fantastic star gazing at night. If you decide to bring your own housing, you can choose one of the many RV parks in the area. St. George is a great base for exploration. Activities like mountain biking, hiking, off-roading, and stand-up paddleboarding await you just a short drive away. Opt for a tour outfitter and take an adventurous e-bike tour. If that sounds too adventurous for you, don’t worry! I have friends and family in their 60s who have done this and loved it! While most people stop in St. George to see Zion National Park, one of the most-visited parks in the United States, many people do not realize that there are actually four state parks and lots of yearround recreational lands to visit. For example, take some easy hikes in Snow Canyon State Park. Johnson Canyon’s 1.8-mile hike takes less than an hour, and you will see lava flow fields and a 200-foot arch. A really quick, 0.3mile hike called Jenny’s Canyon takes you to a slot canyon. Another treat can be found in Hildale, about an hour away. Take the Water Canyon Trail and hike through streams and waterfalls while surrounded by steep, sandstone canyon walls. It is 3.8 miles round-trip and is located near Water Canyon Resort, which has recently open a vineyard. How convenient is that for an after-hike treat? If you prefer just to unwind in St. George itself, you can explore the local museums and historical sites, shop the Saturday farmers markets, and take in a show at Tuacahn Center outdoor amphitheater. That, in itself, will keep you pretty busy! With all of the natural beauty and in-town activities, St. George is definitely worth a visit. Maybe you will do the same thing I did and make this southern Utah city your new stopover town. Sources for this article included: greaterzion.com, visitutah. com, and sandhollowresort.com.

Curt Hofer & Associates Bringing Dream Homes to Life
By Linda Sutherland
There are many reasons to seek the satisfaction of a custom home. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about and planning your dream home for many years. Perhaps your family has simply outgrown your current domicile and you want to spread out in brand-new digs. Perhaps you love your current home but need more space or want to add something luxurious like a pool and sunroom. Whatever your home needs are, you can be certain that Curt Hofer & Associates can help make it all happen! The president and co-owner of Curt Hofer & Associates, Steve Huber, is a delightful and articulate man who clearly loves what he is doing. Steve was raised in Norfolk, Nebraska, and married his high school sweetheart. (Today, she is part of the team that runs this inspiring business.) Steve started his career at Millard Lumber in Omaha, supplying materials for Curt Hofer, a new man on the Omaha residential building scene. Over several years, Curt and Steve developed a great working relationship. Eventually, Curt asked Steve if he would be interested in coming to work with him. It was a big step for Steve and his wife and their three children, but they took the leap. Steve has been with the company since 1995, along with his wife and one of their sons. Today, he partners with Craig Linnenbrink, the vice president of construction, and together they run this prestigious company with style and grace. Each home that they lovingly build is a unique design created to meet the wants and needs of a specific client. You will find no “cookie-cutter” homes built by Curt Hofer & Associates. As a matter of fact, Steve notes, they have never built the same house twice. The process is truly customized. When it comes to building a home, this company can make any dream into a reality. They work with clients in all stages of the design process, including those who have just purchased a lot and have some general ideas of what they want and those who know exactly what they want in a new home but have no clear idea about how to execute the process. This is where the team at Curt Hofer & Associates really shines. “Our clients start the process by sitting down with us so we can get to know their lifestyles, their habits, their likes and dislikes,” Steve explains. “Clients can even bring in their own blueprints, if they wish.” With some of their clients, Steve notes, “we have built two or three houses for them over the years.” That kind of loyalty says quite a bit about the high quality of their work as well as their customized attention. Even in the custom home-building industry, many companies can build you a nice house, get
paid, and be done with it—you never hear from them again. Curt Hofer & Associates is a different kind of company. They keep in contact Steve Huber, President with their clients after they are living in their new homes. In many cases, their clients contact them a few years down the road to add on to their current house. “We want to treat our clients fairly and respect their hopes and wishes,” Steve says. “Designing and building a home is a learning process for everyone, and finding the perfect balance is what we strive to do. We build high-end custom homes, and we are constantly inspired by the ideas of our clients.” Also inspiring is the fact that they have many long-term employees in their company who all work together as a team in motion. Behind the scenes, they have three full-time draftsmen, and their construction superintendent worked for the company for 20 years before taking on his present responsibilities. There is a family-team feeling that shines through the office. After talking with Steve, I felt comfortable and welcome. This highly regarded company has earned both local and national recognition for their custom-designed homes and their dedication to craftsmanship. According to Steve, Curt Hofer & Associates is able to maintain longstanding relationships with clients by “treating people fairly and respecting the learning process.” Perhaps not surprisingly, this is also how he builds lasting connections with and among his employees. The number of details and decisions that must be made when designing and building a house can be overwhelming, and the team at Curt Hofer & Associates are happy to help you navigate the process. Their refreshing approach to client relationships will make you feel confident that they are the team you need. To learn more, give them a call at 402-758-0440 or visit them online at curthofer.com. Curt Hofer & Associates is located at 16820 Frances Street, in Omaha. September 2021

Perfect Pampering A Day at the Spa
By Loretta McCollum
As we emerge from the fog of COVID-19, we’re definitely ready to treat ourselves to something special. A day spa is exactly that: a head-to-toe pampering, relaxation, and rejuvenation experience. At virtually any spa, multiple pre-set package options are available, or you can tailor the experience to your own preferences. Some spas even offer food and drink. Can you say massage and merlot, or pedicure and paella? Consider treating a friend, as well, by making it a girls’ day out. Most spas offer a full menu of body treatments, facials, and massages. Other services, such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, and even hair and makeup, are standard at many facilities. Let’s start with the most relaxing spa treatment: the massage. There’s nothing like a good massage to ease muscle tension and break up those tight knots. Keep in mind that not all massages are created equal! To get the most out of your spa experience, be sure to choose the type of massage that’s best for you. The Swedish massage is a popular choice. It’s a great allover massage that can be slow and gentle or more forceful and invigorating. In contrast, a deep tissue massage involves applying strong, constant pressure to the deeper tissue muscle structure. This would be a good choice for chronic muscle pain. You could choose a hot stone massage, where the therapist performs the massage while holding a heated stone. They may also place the stones along your spine. The warmth from the
stones helps you relax and loosens up tight muscles. Want a body detox or all-over exfoliation and hydration? Consider getting a body wrap. As with massages, there are multiple wrap types. A detox wrap draws impurities out of your system and provides your body with minerals. First, a body mask containing mud, clay, algae, or seaweed is applied. Then, you’re wrapped in plastic and covered with a blanket for about 20 minutes. The mask stimulates circulation, which helps rid the body of toxins. After 20 minutes, you jump into a hot shower to rinse off the mask. A hydrating body wrap uses a rich cream or gel to penetrate the skin after an exfoliating body scrub. While your skin soaks up the moisture, you’re relaxing, all wrapped up in a warm towel. In addition to detoxifying and hydrating, body

wraps can also tone and tighten, temporarily boost metabolism, and relieve stress. If you want professional exfoliation without the wrap, go with a relaxing body scrub, instead. A massage therapist rubs your skin with a blend of sea salt, oils, and aromatics for 10 to 15 minutes. This is followed by a rinse in the shower. A moisturizer may be applied afterward. Including a facial treatment in a spa day helps us put our best face forward. Basic facials steam and cleanse the pores. Targeted anti-aging facials use alpha hydroxy creams to help skin look smooth and fresh. An antioxidant facial utilizes vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene to remove pollutants. No matter which option you choose, a facial will cleanse, improve skin tone, moisturize, tighten, and hydrate your skin for a smoother, healthy-looking face. Hair removal treatments such as waxing can be incorporated into your spa experience. It may sound less relaxing than the rest of your treatments, but there’s something to be said for taking advantage of a hot wax treatment while you’re still chilling in your comfy robe. Waxing removes unwanted hair at the root, leaving you smooth and slowing the regrowth process. Another popular site for hair removal is the eyebrows. Threading is an ancient practice that removes unwanted hairs by pulling them out at the follicle. It’s less painful than tweezing, and the regrowth process is much slower. After you’ve been hydrated, massaged, exfoliated, and smoothed, some facilities offer a light lunch and a glass of wine or mineral water, served up in a quiet room with soft music and a soothing waterfall. Then, it’s time to focus on the finishing touches like makeup and nails. A trained aesthetician chooses makeup shades and colors that best flatter your face and then shows you how to apply the products to get the look you’re going for. Eyelash extensions are popular, and we’re not talking about drugstore false lashes. At a day spa, you can choose your lash length and curl style—plus, they’re professionally applied and typically last one to two months. Last, but not least, sit back and relax with a drink while a nail technician trims, files, scrubs, and polishes your nails with your choice of colors. You’ll emerge from the spa looking and feeling like a new woman, ready to conquer the world. Sources for this article included: tripsavvy.com, readanddigest.com, and beautyanswered.com. Winter is Coming Fireplace Trends for 2021
By Robyn V. Powell
From the first chilly nights of fall through the long winter months that follow, who doesn’t crave the cozy warmth of a roaring fireplace? As the heart of the home, the hearth has long been the family’s gathering place. Spending more time at home in 2020 fanned the flames for people returning to family traditions, and the desire for the fireplace roared back to life. According to the National Association of Home Builders, fireplaces rank among the top three features desired by homebuyers. It’s no wonder that homeowners and designers alike have emphasized beautiful and functional fireplaces at the center of the home. This year sees the continuance of many of 2020’s fireplace trends, with bold, linear, and contemporary fireplaces leading the way. These large, clean-lined gas fireplaces are equally at home in contemporary or traditional settings. In fact, a linear fireplace in a classic setting completely transforms and updates the space. A linear surround can be constructed to suit any style by choosing complementary materials, from painted drywall to a brick or stone veneer. Fireplaces in older homes often show signs of wear, giving the room a dated feel. Avoid a costly and messy tear-out and rebuild with fireplace refacing—a process whereby new materials are mounted over the existing structure. Imagine the difference it would make to have your existing fireplace transformed from dated to designer showcase! The advent of lightweight brick and stone veneers and
fire-resistant materials has opened up a new world of design possibilities to refresh a dated fireplace. There are numerous materials to suit any style of home—stone, tile, wood, and concrete, to name a few. A qualified fireplace specialist will ensure that the proper materials are being used and that safety standards are met. One way to make a dramatic change in your space and create a stunning visual is taking a fireplace to the ceiling. Adding concrete to the face of a masonry fireplace creates a modern vibe, while the warmth of wood suits many design aesthetics. Create a beautiful classic look with custom woodwork or keep things rustic and natural with reclaimed wood. It’s not uncommon to combine several materials. For example, wood and stone or wood and slate complement each other beautifully. Complete your fireplace by adding a mantel or built-in bookshelves.

Ventless gas fireplaces are popular because they burn cleanly and are easy to operate. Unlike vented wood or gas fireplaces, ventless models do not require any chimney for air intake or any type of venting of exhaust gases to the exterior of the home, making it possible to install them in a wider variety of locations in the home. Ventless fireplaces operate with natural gas or liquid propane; blowers circulate air around the firebox to heat the room. Traditional fireplaces may exude charm, but they tend to be inefficient because of heat loss. A great solution is a fireplace insert, which is a self-contained unit that burns gas, wood, or pellets. Placing an insert inside an existing masonry or factory-built fireplace with a working chimney provides an efficient source of heat, eliminates drafts, and keeps the heat flowing toward the room. The added convenience of a programmable thermostat cuts down on expensive heating bills. Except for the ventless variety, fireplaces are part of a system that includes a chimney and flue. Homeowners should have chimneys inspected and cleaned at least once a year. Even if your fireplace isn’t getting a lot of use, a damaged chimney (or one with a buildup of creosote) is a fire hazard. While gas fireplaces don’t produce creosote, they also need an annual chimney sweep to remove any debris or bird nests. Over time, the mortar in a masonry chimney deteriorates and needs to be removed and replaced in a process known as tuckpointing. If mortar joints are not repaired, water can seep down the chimney or between the chimney and flue lining. Water damage can remain unseen, causing wood rot, mold, and mildew. Tuckpointing helps prevent water from entering the chimney system. It should be done every 10–15 years by a masonry professional who can inspect the chimney and assess the needed repairs. Have your chimney inspected in the spring or summer to get a jump on the busy season and allow time for any needed repairs before you want to build the first fire of autumn. A fireplace adds to the comfort and value of your home, whether you’re remodeling or starting from scratch. Enjoy this winter with a new or refreshed fireplace and infuse your home with a cozy vibe that will make you never want to leave. Head Trauma Awareness Knowing the Signs Can Save a Life
By Leslie Byrne
When a head impact causes a traumatic brain injury (TBI), it needs to be taken seriously and treated properly. Knowing the signs and when to seek medical help is crucial. A brain injury can leave someone at risk of serious physical or psychological effects. Brain injury is a leading cause of death or disability for children and young adults, and more than a million Americans a year sustain a TBI. The most common causes are falls, vehicle accidents, physical violence or abuse, sports injuries, or explosives. Playing sports can lead to a head trauma. Contact sports are not the only sports in which head trauma is a concern! Sports such as cycling or golf can land an athlete in the emergency room with a concussion or other serious injury. The repetitive blows to the head in sports like football, soccer, or boxing can cause long-term problems that can be debilitating or deadly. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease that can lead to learning disabilities, memory problems, and dementia. A research study at Boston University examined 202 brains from deceased football players and found that 177 of them (87%) had signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy from repeated blows to the head. If your children play sports, make sure they are as safe as possible and wear the best protective gear available. See the doctor any time there is a blow to the head.
You have a
choice
If someone sustains a blow to the head from a sports injury or any other cause, don’t just brush it off—watch for signs of traumatic injury. Signs to watch for include headache, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, or problems with speech. Other symptoms include blurred vision, ringing in the ears, or sensitivity to light. If someone loses consciousness, vomits, has dilated eyes, cannot wake up, or has weakness or numbness in the fingers and toes, seek immediate medical help. Babies and young children cannot articulate how they are feeling, so parents need to watch for altered eating or nursing habits, unusual irritability, persistent crying, changes in sleep pattern, or seizures. Anyone with a head injury should see a health care provider immediately. Someone with a mild TBI or concussion can usually recover at home after a thorough medical exam. A CT exam or MRI may be needed. Moderate or severe TBI may need ongoing care, including anti-seizure medication or surgery to

Reciprocation Get What You Give
By Janet Van deWalle
Baseball…I used to find it the most boring sport in the world. I remember going to a pro baseball game some years back. “It’s like watching grass grow,” I texted to my brother Tom from the stands. “It’s like watching paint dry!”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Kolton gave the ball to Manny.
“It’s okay if you think baseball is boring. It’s kind of a smart person’s sport.” —Sports Fan
It was one of the most touching displays of reciprocation I have ever seen. It occurred almost immediately, came straight from Kolton’s heart, and brought tears to Manny’s eyes…and mine. What a moment!
Then, in 2015, the game of baseball was explained to me. My husband, Manny, took me to a Kansas City Royals game and taught me about baseball. I got hooked! A couple of weeks ago, we headed to Minneapolis for a quick weekend to see Shohei Ohtani, the record-breaking player for the Los Angeles Angels. We had the pleasure of sitting next to woman named Tabitha and her young son, Kolton, who had come from Missouri to see the game. Kolton was a true fan. He knew the game, knew the team, and knew the players. He and his mother had come early, and Kolton had been given a baseball that he had filled with autographs from the players. He was very proud! T.C. Bear (the Minneapolis Twins mascot) came by, and Kolton jumped up to get his picture taken. T.C. didn’t see Kolton and turned away. Manny saw what had happened and flagged T.C. down. Kolton got the picture he wanted…even though T.C. covered up Kolton’s Angels t-shirt for the photo. A few minutes later, one of the players came up and handed Kolton another baseball.
“Go where your energy is reciprocated, celebrated, and appreciated.” —Anonymous
“The Golden Rule. One word that explains it all is reciprocity.” —Anonymous Manny and I talk often about reciprocation. What you put out, you get back…whether that’s anger, fear, frustration, kindness, gratitude, or love. The part that is really important to remember is that we don’t live in a world of instant manifestation. Sometimes, we put lots of positive stuff out there and it takes a while to get some of it back. But that Saturday night in Minneapolis? Instant manifestation. How cool is that? “Be a reflection of what you’d like to see in others! If you want love, give love; if you want honesty, give honesty; if you want respect, give respect. You get in return, what you give.” —Unknown

Kids Comments
School Begins Again! Do The “Three Rs” Still Apply? As September approaches and the weather begins to cool, I’m reminded that school will start soon. It’s time to get the kids ready by encouraging earlier bedtimes, taking an inventory of their clothes to find what still fits, making sure last year’s backpacks are still serviceable, shopping for school supplies… then I see a school bus make its rounds of the neighborhood and remember that most schools start classes in August. No wonder I haven’t seen the neighborhood kids out during the day! I also am reminded that getting ready for the school year is a lot different than when my kids were in school…and has vastly changed from my own school days. Instead of pencils, pens, markers, crayons, and packs of paper, today’s parents are often shopping for a computer. “Tablets” are electronic rather than the “Big Chief” pads of paper. The kids’ study area needs an internet connection. They may need Skype or Zoom or similar programs to take part in some classes and activities. Because I’m still a “hard copy” kind of person, I think it’s a good idea to have a printer available so the kids can make copies of any work they turn in electronically. I have little faith in the reliability of technology. It’s great when it works and is really irritating when it doesn’t. Kids still learn what we knew as the “three Rs” in school, but they aren’t always called reading, ’riting, and ’rithmetic anymore.
By Marge Shoemaker
Reading is a class often combined with English and renamed Language Arts. ’Riting and composition are often done electronically, complete with spell-check and grammar hints. ’Rithmetic has become Math and involves understanding how to use a calculator. Do your kids ask to go to the library to do research or voluntarily sit down to read a book? How many kids do you know who can write legibly and coherently…or who can read and write in cursive? How many parents try to help their kids with math when there’s no text to help them out? What I’ve seen in my tutoring students is a need for an additional set of Rs: Responsibility, Rules, and Recognition. I think it’s vital that kids take responsibility for what they do… or don’t do. School is their work; teachers are their bosses. As in real life, there may be conflicts in the classroom. The kids should be responsible for working things out. Rules aren’t always popular but are always necessary. In my opinion, a good start is: No games or socializing on the computer until homework is finished. Recognition is something we all need! Sincere praise for a job well done and appreciation of honest effort means a lot. Times have changed, but needs haven’t! Make the school year as successful as possible. Be prepared, positive, and supportive of all the Rs.

Get Your Health, Strength and Vitality back At SuperSlow Zone
By Janette Calabro
It’s been a long year of stress eating, inactivity, loss of vitality and, of course, those COVID 19 extra pounds! Julie Galloway, who owns the Omaha franchise of SuperSlow Zone, has a solution to get you back on track in improving your health and well-being. Julie and her team will guide you through personalized strength training to help you increase muscle mass, bone strength, endurance, balance, and overall physical vitality. You can get a total body workout in just 20 minutes, without even having to change your clothes. That’s right! Twenty-minute workouts, once or twice a week, and you can wear whatever you put on for the day and go right back to your daily activities when finished. The goal here is focused strength training, not working up a sweat. The weight machines are medical grade, and the instructors (Julie included) are certified by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training. The instructor sets up the weight machines and guides you through each exercise while teaching you proper form and tracking your progress. Weight
Coaches- L-R Shelia Duckworth, Justin Frost, Maggie Holloway repetitions last 20 seconds—10 seconds to raise the weight and 10 to lower it. The exercise is high-intensity but low-impact, designed to improve muscle tone and strength in a gradual, healthy way. “Your body didn’t get out of shape overnight, and it’s not going to fall back into shape overnight,” Julie points out. “It takes about three months to start noticing significant changes to the body in strength, energy levels, and muscle tone.”

She recommends complementary exercise, such as biking, walking, swimming, yoga, Pilates, or running, but advises against additional weight training. She stresses that you want to fatigue the muscle without overworking it. In fact, overworking can actually decrease muscle mass. “You want to thoroughly exhaust the muscle, but do it safely.” Don’t worry if you don’t know how to do that, she says. “At SuperSlow Zone, you’re with the instructor every second of the workout, so it’s like having a personal trainer.” SuperSlow Zone is for all ages and fitness levels, but it’s particularly helpful for people who have lost muscle mass or have injuries that make higher-impact exercise unsuitable. “People begin to ‘feel their age’ around 50 to 55 years,” Julie says. “We all experience it—suddenly, that strength isn’t there anymore. This age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia. With this workout, our clients’ strength increases, their health improves, they’re doing more in life. The reward is in seeing people improve their lives. I have people in their 70s who have never worked out before, and now they’re very strong. This is a lifestyle change for people. It’s really amazing.” Just ask Kyrsten, who was diagnosed with a degenerative disk and spinal stenosis. “I needed a safe way to strengthen my core to help stabilize my spine,” she recalls. “A friend referred me to SuperSlow Zone, and I’m addicted! The care and commitment from the staff is exceptional, always making sure my form is correct and that I’m not feeling unwarranted strain or pain during my session.” Kyrsten has been coming to SuperSlow Zone for four years, and she can feel the benefits. “I’m stronger, more stable, standing straighter, and—best of all—feeling less fatigue and far fewer aches and pains throughout my day.”

Another client, 73-year-old Joe, didn’t want to spend his day in the gym. “I went looking for efficient, effective, safe ways to work on my strength and cardiovascular system. Over the years, I have undergone joint replacements and suffered a variety of injuries. I know from experience that if I get injured in the gym, my motivation and fitness decrease as I am recovering. I was looking for something that would make sure that my bones, tendons, and joints were safe. The SuperSlow Zone weight training protocol met all of those requirements! I can see clear changes on the data sheet with regard to time and strength increases. Perhaps more importantly, I can see increases in strength, balance, and how my clothes fit.” “If you’re looking to get in shape but hesitate to go to the gym, call SuperSlow Zone and schedule a free consultation and sample workout in our safe, clean and efficient semi private studio,” says Julie. Rates are reasonable, and the flexible program is month-to-month, with no long-term membership fees. SuperSlow Zone has been open in Omaha since 2013 and, because their protocol has followed strict CDC guidelines, the studio has remained open throughout this pandemic. They keep the weight machines sanitized, wear masks, and provide free disposable gloves for every client while you are safely distanced from others. The studio also incorporates special HVAC filters to maintain a healthier environment. “People are inside a lot right now. They’re worried, they’re anxious, and those things aren’t good for us,” Julie concludes. “I’m pleased to provide an environment for people to regain strength and vitality and confidence in themselves.” SuperSlow Zone is located in Omaha at 17785 Mason Street (178th and Pacific). The New Wall Street Normal Are We Really Going Back? By George Morgan
If you haven’t heard the phrase “things are getting back to normal” at least two dozen times in the last week, you need to get out more. What does“normal”really mean? Does it mean we’ll go back to the way things used to be before the pandemic, or will some of the recent changes stick around? As we get back to normal, we will surely have fewer Zoom meetings, but the convenience of Zoom is not going away. Many of us will go back to the office regularly, but working from home is not going to completely vanish. Last, but certainly not least, sweatpants have become and will remain a staple item in our wardrobes for years to come…we just won’t be wearing them 24/7. So, what does getting back to normal look like on Wall Street? The new normal for Wall Street begins with the growing number of investors who have developed a relationship with a discount/internet brokerage firm. Currently, the American public has $18 trillion (yes, that’s trillion with a T) on deposit with them. This is very different from just 20 years ago, when Americans only had about $600 billion on deposit with online firms, with the remaining $1.4 trillion of their retirement dollars invested in the traditional full-service Wall Street firms. The investors who have migrated from the Wall Street firms to the discount/internet firms fall into two camps. First are those who still choose to use the services of a financial professional. Twenty years ago, investors’ relationships with their financial professionals centered on the investment function. Today’s relationships center on financial planning, with the investment component as an add-on. The broker/client relationship has become one that is less dominated by the broker. Today, it involves more input from the client side because the number of available options has expanded dramatically. The main line Wall Street firms have installed guidelines that direct most of their clients’ assets to packaged investment strategies that are managed from the home office. This format has trickled down to the discount/internet brokers. Investors who work with financial professionals at either full-service or discount/internet firms will all find that most investment management activity is robot-driven. The other type of investors utilizing the discount/internet brokers are those who rely on themselves to make the investment decisions. This, too, has developed into a new normal. The discount brokers have developed online platforms that allow their clients to use packaged programs that mimic a robot advisor, but their clients can pick and choose how their robot programs are constructed. The discount brokers have enhanced these programs by offering a wide variety of apps that can be downloaded to their clients’ cell phones. These appeal to the mobile lifestyle of many investors who are managing their investments for the first time. Another element of the new Wall Street normal is that while many investors using discount brokers desire to 42
September 2021
maintain a relationship with a financial professional, that professional is most likely an independent financial advisor, not an employee of the discount broker. As discount brokers have grown, their business model has not relied on investment fees to generate profits. They make their living by lending out their cash deposits in a fashion similar to the retail banks. This model does not allow them to have a sales force to gather assets. Instead, they have been promoting programs that encourage independent financial advisors to use their platforms and, thus, bring their clients’ assets with them. Another part of Wall Street’s new normal is the exponential growth of index funds. Index funds buy and then hold the exact stocks that make up the index they mirror. Index funds are mutual funds that are passively managed; no effort is made to enhance performance by actively trading the assets. This means that the costs of managing the portfolios are dramatically reduced. These savings are passed on to the shareholders. Twenty years ago, index funds constituted 3 percent of the funds market. Today, that number exceeds 40 percent. Twenty years ago, American spread their index fund holdings across 37 investment firms. Now, three firms control 85 percent of the market. The new Wall Street normal comes with a plethora of new investment approaches that will allow you to create investment strategies that weren’t available to you just a few years ago. What part of the new normal will work for you and your investment goals? As always, my caveat is that one size does not fit all. Begin by making a wish list of investment options that fit your temperament and skills. Then put on your best sweatpants, get online, and build your own new normal. Editor’s Note: George Morgan has five decades’ experience in all phases of the investment process. He is currently the Founder and Principal of Morgan Investor Education. Suburban Bridal Exquisite, Affordable Gowns
By Linda Sutherland
Is there anything more wonderful than being a bride? The wedding day is the one time that any woman can feel like a princess. One way to upgrade that wedding day feeling is to find your dress at Suburban Bridal! This one-of-a-kind shop sparkles with stunning dresses. You’ll have visions of your gorgeous wedding day the moment you walk in the door. The owner of this shop is Mary Lou Scherer, and a more dedicated dynamo you will not find. She has owned Suburban Bridal for 52 years, and she shows no signs of slowing down. Mary Lou grew up on a farm in a small town in Iowa and started drawing dresses when she was a young child. She later attended the University of Iowa and then went to the National Institute of Dress Design to become a couturiere (that is, a woman who designs couture). She became a freelance bridal designer for different manufacturers. She then joined a team that designed their own line of bridal gowns and hired manufacturers to construct the gowns. Eventually, Mary Lou opened her own retail store. One of Mary Lou’s daughters, Lisa, grew up to become the manager of Suburban Bridal, where she worked for 25 years. When Lisa passed away in 2014, Mary Lou wanted to create a legacy for her beloved daughter. She knew how much Lisa cared about helping brides find beautiful gowns that didn’t break their budgets, so she decided to create a line of bridal gowns that would fit that bill. The Lisa Lou line was born! These gowns are exquisitely designed down to the finest detail, but they are also affordable. These are haute couture gowns that people can afford to buy! Mary Lou’s creative team of talented women will help brides with every aspect and every detail to make their wedding dress dreams come true. One of the many features of this bridal shop that I found intriguing was the fact that they carry only bridal gowns. No bridesmaid dresses, no mother-of-the-bride or -groom dresses, no dresses for prom or other formal occasions—just the most exquisite and delicately beautiful bridal dresses I have ever seen. Their laser focus on matching the best dress to each bride is what brings generations of brides back to the shop. Mary Lou and her team know how to guide a bride toward the dresses that will highlight her favorite features. Selecting the perfect dress for any woman with any figure is their specialty, and they have a long list of satisfied clients to prove it. Mary Lou receives glorious reviews from customers, and I can see why. “I had no idea what I was looking for,” says bride
Madison, “and Suburban Bridal helped me find the perfect gown and veil.” Mother-ofthe-bride Vickie agrees that Mary Mary Lou Scherer, Lou’s expertise and customer service is second Couturiere-Owner to none. “My daughter and I spent two wonderful hours with Mary Lou,”Vickie says. “She gave us very personal attention, finding the perfect dress that met all of my daughter’s wishes.” When asked about her philosophy on business, Mary Lou states, “I treat people the way I would like to be treated. That has served me very well in business…and in my life.” There is an innate kindness about this lovely woman that is immediately evident upon meeting her. “My work is so rewarding and inspiring,” she continues. “I get the opportunity to share the love with all my clients and customers.” Mary Lou goes on to say that she loves to listen to prospective brides and get to know them—their lifestyles, their likes and dislikes, and what they are all about. This helps to ensure that together they find the perfect dress, one that fits and reflects each bride’s inner beauty, outer beauty, character, and appearance. The bride and her special day are always the focus of Mary Lou’s team. I do not think a bride could be in better hands than with this woman and her dedicated staff. Mary Lou’s advice to prospective business owners is “to take pleasure in your work and behave kindly towards all who seek you out.” Whether or not you own a business, it’s hard to go wrong with that advice! If you are going to be a bride or are the mother of a bride-to-be, I highly recommend you make this your first stop when it comes to the dress. It will likely be the only stop you have to make! Suburban Bridal is located at 2607 South 156th Circle, in Omaha. The shop is open for walk-ins on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are by appointment only (unless a consultant happens to be available). You can reach the shop at 402-255-0022 or suburbanbridalomaha.com September 2021

Garden Peace Finding Serenity in the Yard
By Linda Sutherland
As I sat in my garden recently, watching birds fluffing around in the bird bath and butterflies hovering over various blooming flowers, it occurred to me that I have created a small version of paradise in my backyard. We all yearn for the peace and serenity that comes with a special quiet place. Who knew that I could make it myself in my own space? With some help and advice, my hope is to instill in many of you the confidence to create your own peaceful oasis to enjoy as the days and nights dreamily slip away in September. First, we need to talk about the kind of garden I wanted to create. I would like to tell you that all my gardens were planned and that they all came together effortlessly, and everyone coexisted happily ever after. Alas, not so much. I always had plans in my head and some even drawn out on paper, but I learned quickly that not all things come together with ease. I was sure of two things: I wanted gardens that attracted wildlife (birds, bees, and butterflies), and I wanted an excess of color and texture. Well, and I wanted it all to come together to provide true bliss. I will start by listing some perennials that can handle all types of weather variables as well as attracting the wildlife I wanted to have. Bee balm, also known as monarda, is a great attractor of bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and it’s one of my go-to perennials. This flower has a daisy-like shape in
shades of purple, red, pink, and white. My personal favorite is the scarlet variety. The blooms are gorgeous and have an old-fashioned look and beauty to them. They are also edible and medicinal, if you are into that sort of thing. Anyone who knows me knows I am all about echinacea, known as coneflowers. These trouble-free beauties come in a variety of bright or subdued colors and are absolutely striking as they reach for the sky. The nectar in these flowers is like dessert to bees and butterflies. They are deer-resistant, very resilient, and tolerate pretty much any growing conditions. Echinacea is a staple in my garden! Is there a happier looking plant than a sunflower? Hmmm…probably not! They attract songbirds and bees, and you can just sit back and watch the magic happen. This is the only annual on my list because you just need them in your life.

Black-eyed Susan (rudbeckia) is an incredibly happy-looking perennial. These long bloomers are extremely easy to grow and maintain. They love the sun, and they will keep the blooms coming all summer and through the fall. Penstemon, also known as beardtongue, is a good performer in shady or partly shady areas. These hardy and resilient additions to a wildlife paradise are completely irresistible to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The rich color of the foliage also adds beautiful contrast to your garden palette. Coreopsis (the state wildflower of Florida), also known as tickseed, is exceptionally long-lasting. These no-fuss beauties are still giving it their all once most perennials have stopped flowering for the season. They are on my “need to add more” list year after year. I love that old cottage garden look, and old-fashioned asters really fit the bill. These wonderfully colorful blooms are favorites of mine because they are just getting started when most of the flowers in my garden are preparing for fall and winter. Bees and butterflies simply adore asters, and it is quite a sight to behold when you see clusters of butterflies getting that rare source of late-season nectar. These blue and purple gems are usually the very last to give up for the season—they are even frost-hardy! Once you have the living elements of your oasis in place, it’s time to add some other touches. I love a good fountain or small waterfall nestled in the garden for a soothing accompaniment to the chirping birds. The sound of tinkling water is so relaxing and restful, and most home stores have an array of sizes for any garden, large or small. For something more elaborate, a landscape designer can help you figure out what will meet your needs. What about lighting? Placing lights to accent a tree or create charm around an arch or pergola is simply enchanting and is a delight to all who enter—not to mention a pleasure to view from inside your home, even if it’s not great weather for relaxing in the garden. Strategically arranging some flea market finds in and around your oasis is great fun and adds touches of whimsy. I hope I’ve given you some ideas for your own personal garden paradise!

Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Is Someone You Love at Risk?
By Linda Barnes
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. With nearly 200,000 males expected to be diagnosed this year, prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men (after skin cancer). It is not an easy cancer to understand. Because it generally grows slowly, a man may be able to live with it for a normal life span. However, some forms are more dangerous and, if not detected soon enough, can spread to bones or other organs. Men 50 years and older are most at risk for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is not preventable, but it is possible to reduces a person’s risk. Factors like age, family history of prostate cancer, or race (i.e., African American) are outside our control. However, risk from other factors can be reduced, such as those associated with being overweight, smoking, inactivity, or lack of regular doctor visits. Chances are good that you have a male loved one who is at risk for prostate cancer. My father had late-in-life prostate cancer that did eventually spread to his lungs. Two of my husband’s cousins had prostate cancer. We can encourage our loved ones to get regular checkups and keep an eye on their health. Symptoms that raise concern are often urinary in nature: frequent urination, burning urination, difficulty starting flow, weak flow, or dribbling. Erectile disfunction may also be a symptom. The prostate is a walnut-sized organ just below the bladder in men. It surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) and is part of the male reproductive system. It often
46 AARP Stay Connected - quarter.indd 1
September 2021
grows larger later in life. In fact, enlarged prostate in older men is quite common and is more often non-cancerous. This condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is where things get complicated. An enlarged prostate is probably not due to cancer, but it certainly could be. If it is cancer, it might be so slow-growing that it does not require treatment, but it might be a fast-growing cancer that is at high risk of spreading. The goal of screening is to find prostate cancers that are likely to spread unless treated and to identify them early enough to prevent spreading to bones or other organs. The doctor will want to know about family history and any other medical issues. A physical exam will check for things like the size of the prostate, its firmness, its texture, and it whether it is painful to the touch. A blood test checks for prostate specific antigen (PSA). A urine sample may be taken or ultrasound images utilized, as well.

None of these tests actually diagnose cancer, but results may raise suspicions of it. In that case, a patient will be referred to a urologist, who is a specialist in urinary and prostate issues. A biopsy may be performed, in the office, to look for cancer cells. Samples will be taken from several areas of the prostate and sent to a lab. If cancer cells are found, the way forward has many paths. Treatment choices depend on the patient’s age and general health, and whether cancer is limited to one part of the prostate or is found throughout the organ. Active surveillance, surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy are some options. The symptoms that can accompany prostate cancer are more likely due to non-cancerous conditions. Besides the common benign enlargement, issues such as a bacterial infection or chronic prostatitis may need attention. Antibiotics may be needed. Other prescription medications that help shrink the prostate or increase urine flow can help relieve symptoms. When should a man consider being screened for prostate cancer? Generally, age 50 is a good time to discuss screening with a physician. However, men with higher risk factors, such as a family history, or with some of the warning symp- ACS - Surviving Sixth.indd toms should probably discuss screening with their doctor even sooner. Meanwhile, men can maintain healthier prostates through diet and exercise. Instead of focusing on specific foods, the emphasis should be on overall healthy eating habits. You’ve heard this a hundred times, but it’s still true: more fruits and vegetables, less red meat; more whole grains, less sugar; more healthful fats like olive oil, less sodium; and smaller portions. Regular exercise is also believed to be beneficial to prostate health. Men who are more physically active are less likely to have benign enlarged prostate. Even moderate exercise is a plus. Life With Chronic Pain Common But Not Normal
By Maria Harding
Living with pain is exhausting. It can also be frustratingly difficult to identify the specific cause and find an effective, long-term solution. According to the National Centers for Health Statistics, around 76 million Americans are suffering from chronic pain. Its effects may even damage interpersonal relationships, when loved ones feel helpless or contemptuous, or put employment at risk, when responsibilities cannot be met. Treatments are available! It is not necessary to simply endure discomfort, though it’s important to remember that pain management is seldom straightforward. Pain is often due to a combination of factors, and treatment must be equally nuanced. Start by speaking with your general practitioner. Before your appointment, take time to reflect on details such as when the pain began, whether the pain has gotten worse, and if you have experienced emotional or physical trauma. Try to identify when the pain is most intense and how the sensation can be best described. Your doctor may refer you to a pain specialist, physical therapist, neurologist, or other practitioner, depending on the suspected cause. Pharmaceuticals continue to be the most common and effective way to treat lingering pain. Reducing inflammation is the primary goal of many over-the-counter and prescription pain medications such as ibuprofen. Steroid injections also reduce inflammation, whether administered locally or systemically. If the pain continues to be severe, a short course of opioid medication, such as codeine, fentanyl, or oxycodone may be prescribed. Although many patients attest that their pain can only be relieved

through these medications, this cannot be a long-term solution. Opioids are highly addictive; their misuse led to about 70,000 deaths in the United States in 2020. Nerve blocks are another medical intervention to treat extreme pain. Medicine is injected directly into specific nerves to prevent pain signals from being delivered to the brain. Electrical nerve stimulation, often called “TENS,” is a non-pharmacological intervention in which electrical pulses are administered through topical electrodes near the painful area. The stimulation awakens the body’s natural pain defense system by encouraging the release of endorphins. A physical therapist can identify and modify movements or postural issues that may be contributing to the cycle of pain. Exercises to stretch and strengthen affected areas will help teach the body to move with greater ease. Every physical therapist incorporates a preferred manual therapy, such as myofascial release, massage, or joint manipulation. Having some knowledge of each of these hands-on approaches may help you choose a physical therapist who is right for you.

Movement is of utmost importance to manage chronic pain. A coach or personal trainer can help motivate you to work out consistently and can keep a watchful eye on your technique so you avoid further injury. You might choose activities that are generally easier on joints, such as swimming, biking, walking, or yoga. The mindfulness component of yoga can teach us to release tension in specific areas of the body, finding balance between strength and surrender. Psychotherapists can help patients navigate the feelings of frustration and exhaustion that often accompany chronic pain. They may help uncover deep-rooted issues that may be contributing to the cycle of pain. Like physical therapists, mental health practitioners often incorporate specialized therapies that set them apart, such as EMDR (rapid eye movements to open brain pathways), hypnosis, biofeedback, and aromatherapy. Holistic approaches are being studied carefully. What was once dismissed as folk wisdom may now be considered an integral part of a healthy approach to pain management. Patients might explore chiropractic treatment, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, guided meditation, and Reiki energy healing. If you incorporate any teas or herbal supplements, be sure to tell your doctor, as some supplements cause adverse effects when combined with certain medications. Learning more about the connection between food and body inflammation, and making dietary adjustments, will help manage chronic pain. Categories to limit include refined carbohydrates, fried foods, sugar, and red meat. Every individual has unique nutritional needs and food sensitivities. Enlisting the help of a dietician or allergist may help you identify yours. If an immediate solution is not evident, don’t despair; find strength in a network of supportive professionals and friends. If your doctor expresses a belief that stress is playing a prominent role in your ongoing pain, do not interpret the observation as dismissive. Informed healthcare professionals know that pain is not imagined, but complex, and they will help you piece together a solution. If you find yourself asking whether you want to continue living because of your relentless pain, please seek help immediately by calling the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK(8255). If you or someone you love struggles with an addiction, help is available at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration at 1-800662-HELP(4357). Vehicle Maintenance Your Tip-Top Checklist
By Linda Sutherland
Whether your vehicle is old or new (or new to you), it’s always a good time to start keeping a regular maintenance schedule. I have always regretted that I have not given my car more attention. I do not mean to say that I neglected my vehicle, but I have always relied on someone else to tell me when maintenance was required, and I now know that they did not always keep me apprised of everything that needed to be checked out. I’ve compiled some suggestions to help you keep your vehicle running smoothly. Let us begin with a car diagnostic test overview. This simply means a digital analysis of your car’s computer systems and components. Most vehicles now are much more computerized than you might guess. This specialized software system goes to work whenever your car’s engine is powered on. It monitors your car’s elements and then can create data reports to be analyzed during a car diagnostic test. These diagnostic tests are not a do-it-yourself situation; they should be performed by a mechanic or dealership. It can be arranged as part of your regular maintenance appointment, when the mechanic checks your car’s engine, transmission, brakes, exhaust system, fuel injector, and ignition coils. This should be an annual appointment for your vehicle. It makes a huge difference in helping you avoid major repairs down the line. Experts recommend that you check your oil, transmission fluid, and radiator antifreeze levels once a month (or before you set out on a trip that’s longer than 100 miles). There’s no need to visit the dealership on a monthly basis; your mechanic can show you how to check these fluids on your vehicle. Regardless of your maintenance schedule, it’s smart to have your oil changed about every 5,000 miles. I have always followed that timeline, and it has served me and my cars well. Most car manufacturers recommend changing the oil filter with every other oil change. The oil filter captures contaminants and prevents them from circulating through the engine. It stands to reason that if you have a saturated oil filter, its efficiency is lost, and you end up with an unprotected engine. With that in mind, I am happy to have my oil filter changed too often as opposed to not often enough. Like oil, transmission fluid deteriorates over time, even if it’s not leaking out. You should have your automatic transmission system flushed and the fluid replaced approximately every 45,000 miles. The car battery—you can’t get far without it. How many of us have been unable to start a car in the dead 52

of winter because the battery was dead? It’s not a great feeling. Based on where you get stuck and what the weather is like, the consequences of a dead car battery can range from inconvenient to dire. Manufacturers recommend that you get your battery tested at least twice a year. The more extreme the temperatures in your area, the faster a battery will wear down. If you live in an area with extremely cold winters, you should have your battery tested in late fall and late spring for sure. It’s a good idea to replace your battery altogether every 4 to 5 years. Belts and hoses are also integral parts of a vehicle’s function. If you have a newer car, you most likely have a serpentine belt, and you can usually wait until about 50,000 miles to have it changed. If you have an older model car, you no doubt have a V-belt. This transfers engine power to vehicle components such as the alternator and power steering pump. This type of belt requires replacement every 30,000 miles. Timing belts should be replaced every 40,000 to 60,000 miles; a broken timing belt can cause severe engine damage. Hoses should be checked for cracking, loosening, or any signs of wear and tear. Ask your mechanic to check these elements at your regular maintenance checkup. As far as headlights and taillights go, I have them checked every time I get my oil changed. Most cars indicate on the dash if one of the lights is out, but you should still do a visual check—what if the warning light on the dash is the one that’s out? Manufacturers recommend that you have your tires rotated every 7,500 miles, but you should refer to your owner’s manual to be sure. To maintain even wear and tear, tires should be balanced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. It’s convenient to have wheel alignment checked while your car is up on the lift, but this adjustment really only needs to be made every couple of years. Get your regular vehicle maintenance scheduled! Safety first! Sources for this article included: firestonecompleteautocare.com, quora.com, and jdpower.com.

Marblelife-Omaha Reflecting Your Standards
By Maria Harding
“What value can I create?” asks Bill Vodvarka, owner of Marblelife-Omaha. This is the business model and overarching goal for every project Bill undertakes. Marblelife-Omaha resurfaces, cleans, and seals many marble and granite countertops, and they excel at reviving bathroom tile and grout. However, Bill emphasizes that restoring stone floors is where his company can make the biggest impact on a room’s appearance.“A good way to turn around the look of a building is to really make the floor ‘jump.’That’s where you get the biggest bang for the buck,”he says. Bill and Laura Vodvarka,
Bill and his wife, Laura, always knew they wanted to work with a company that was service-based. They deeply appreciated the beautifully crafted homes and historic buildings in the Omaha area, and they recognized the potential market for marble and granite surface restoration. “We found it very interesting to take something that is old and worn and bring it back to new,” Bill says. “You can then use it and love it. There’s beauty in that.” The parent company Marblelife impressed them with its consistent dedication to meeting and exceeding client expectations. Over the past three decades, Marblelife has established itself as the largest stone restoration and maintenance company in the world, with over 50 locations nationwide. Bill enjoys the variety of projects that Marblelife-Omaha attracts. “We do residential and commercial, inside and outside,” he says. “Something as simple as a bathroom countertop up to a church floor.” Along with free project estimates, the Marblelife salespeople make sure that potential clients have access to referrals that come from clients whose jobs were of a similar size. A healthy mixture of projects is satisfying for Bill’s creative spirit and is also practical for keeping the schedule moving. He can nestle several smaller jobs around one larger project, so homeowners needn’t wait months to get started. “We’re booking about four to six weeks out, but with some jobs, we can get to them within about 10 days.” It’s common for home and business owners to be exasperated by damage done to floors as a result of home repairs and construction. “Marble is relatively soft, and it can etch,” explains Bill. Sawdust, boots, and heavy machinery often leave their mark, even when workers protect the floors with tarps. It’s frustrating to invest time and money into a project only to be left with a new issue. Marblelife-Omaha will have floors looking like new, adding that finishing sparkle to other home improvement efforts. “Because it’s a little bit softer, we can hone marble with flat diamond disks,” says Bill, “and our polishing solution then really brings out that high gloss.” Potential clients may put off refinishing stone surfaces
Owners in their home or business, fearing that the very act of resurfacing and polishing will create fine dust that clogs ventilation systems and clings to every miniblind. That’s not the case, Bill assures us. “When we come in, there is no dust. It is all done wet, and it is cleaned up when we’re done.”You are just left with rich color and a flawless finish. According to the corporate website, Marblelife has invested over 10 million dollars into the research and development of its products. Bill appreciates the resulting formulas that get the job done efficiently so his teams can complete work in a timely manner. Their clients appreciate less time with craftsmen in their home and less time away from their own employment. In one five-star online review, local customer Deborah extols, “Responsive, on time, beautiful floors, excellent work!” The Marblelife-Omaha team will advise owners on appropriate pH-neutral cleaning products. Household cleaners that contain citrus or calcium-dissolving agents can be damaging. Chemically speaking, Bill clarifies, “if you have a surface that is sealed, you are unzipping that seal with an acidic cleaner. You’re allowing moisture to get into your granite, allowing etching to take place on your marble, and opening up that grout.” With the right care, he notes, owners can avoid the need for frequent resurfacing. Marblelife-Omaha wants every customer to feel that they have added value to the spaces they treasure. “The specific answer is different for every client,” Bill explains. For this reason, the sales agents put the control in the hands of each client by offering itemized lists as part of their free estimate; clients choose the details that best represent their goals. “When we’re done, I want customers to look at it and say, ‘Wow! I’m glad we did that!’ If we are set on meeting customers’ needs by being efficient and executing well, we will create value for them, and they will be glad they hired Marblelife.” For more information or to set up a free consultation, you can reach the Marblelife-Omaha team at 888-2184616 or at marblelife-omaha.com.

Service and Support Animals Helping Humans Live Better Lives
By Jackie Byers
Domesticated animals have been serving humans for millennia, but they gained legal status as service animals only recently. In the early 20th century, people with disabilities faced many physical and social barriers. After World War I, a blind veteran named Morris Frank heard of a woman named Dorothy Harrison Eustis who trained German Shepherds as seeing-eye dogs. Together, they opened the first school for seeing-eye dogs in the United States, training dogs and raising awareness of service animals. Flash forward to July 26, 1990, when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) designated dogs as service animals. This gave people with service dogs legal protection to access public spaces with their service animal, even if animals were otherwise not allowed. More recently, wheelchair-bound veterans lobbied to gain a stronger service animal, and the ADA’s definition of service animal was expanded to include miniature horses. In rental housing that doesn’t allow pets, the Fair Housing Act protects residents’ rights to live with a service animal.
The ADA is complex federal legislation that is designed to make life less onerous for people with disabilities. It governs how public facilities respond to service animals. By law, your service animal is allowed access with you to any facility open to the public (even if other people complain). Businesses and organizations that do not follow ADA rules are fined. In some cases, however, you may need special assistance to be accompanied by your service animal. If you’re booking travel, it’s best to talk to a live agent to make sure you understand the process.

Service animals are professionally trained to perform specific tasks that help someone with a disability live more independently. Such disabilities could include blindness, autism, seizure disorders, diabetes, or many more conditions. When someone enters a business or facility with a dog, employees or officials are allowed to ask only two questions: Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Employees may not ask for proof of service or what the owner’s disability is. Fines for violations range from nuisance to quite severe. Many lawsuits occur, some frivolous, for violations of the ADA. Just because a service animal has legal access to public spaces, that doesn’t mean the animal can be disruptive. For example, service animals may not be fed from a restaurant table or bark in a theater. In public, service animals must always be under the owner’s control, by harness, leash, voice commands, or hand signals. Many people get comfort from therapy dogs and emotional support animals, but these are not ADA-protected service animals and do not, therefore, have any legal status that grants them access to facilities that do not choose to allow animals. A therapy dog is selected for its demeanor and is trained to stay calm in a variety of situations. With an owner or handler, therapy dogs visit places like hospitals, senior care facilities, and schools to provide comfort. They must enjoy human contact, as they will be petted, cuddled, and handled by strangers. Emotional support animals often travel with owners and may be allowed inside businesses at the business owner’s discretion. These animals are often pets and are not trained to

perform any specific task related to disability. To board a plane, owners may need to provide a letter from a medical professional stating that the owner’s condition is ameliorated by the presence of the animal. Be sure to check before arriving at the airport. Your physician can provide you with a letter to start you on the process of obtaining a service animal. The first requirement is that you have a certifiable disability. Your veterinarian can help you understand the ADA and help you determine whether a service animal is what you need. Intelligent breeds like German shepherds, poodles, and Labradors have great history as service animals. A service animal is professionally trained over months or even years to address a specific person’s disability. In some cases, training facilities are not nearby. This might make it seem tempting to order an already-trained service animal online, but this route has many pitfalls. Be sure to speak with your veterinarian before you choose that path. Obtaining a service animal costs much more than adopting a pet, but financing programs are available. Veterinarians will know about local groups that provide grants to people with disabilities who need service animals. The Veterans Administration also has programs to help finance service animals for veterans who need them. If you have a disability that you think could be ameliorated by a service animal, talk to your doctor and your veterinarian. The law is on your side. Specializing in Positive Reinforcement Training Positive reinforcement training uses a reward (treats, praise, toys, anything the dog finds rewarding) for desired behaviors. Because the reward makes them more likely to repeat the behavior, positive reinforcement is one of your most powerful tools for shaping or changing your dog’s behavior. At Bonafide Dog Academy we strive to meet our client’s needs and expectations through positive reward based training methods.

What’s New in HVAC Benefits to Replacing Your Unit

It’s that time of year again—time to head back to school, to get excited about fall flavors, and to consider servicing or replacing your HVAC system while the weather is mild. Fall Cleaning Professionals Save You Time and Stress
By Angella A. Arndt
You’ve been working all week, and you’re looking forward to relaxing on the weekend… until you remember that it’s time for fall cleaning. Fall is a great time to clean the whole house, while the weather is still nice and you can open the windows to air everything out. However, if you’re struggling to balance work, family activities, and household chores, hiring professionals may help you maintain your sanity. Professional cleaning services generally include basic tasks like dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning bathrooms and kitchens. Additional services, such as cleaning blinds and baseboards, washing windows, and cleaning cabinets and light fixtures, may be available for an additional fee. Additional services are handy for occasional deep cleaning or if you will be hosting a special event. Should you have your home cleaned weekly, biweekly, or monthly? Budgetary constraints may play a role in determining the frequency. The amount of upkeep between cleanings also impacts the frequency required. Households with children and pets may need more frequent cleanings. To find the right cleaning service for you, start by asking family and friends for referrals. Confirm that each company offers the services you require, especially if you have specific requests that fall outside the basic services provided. Does the service charge a flat fee for each visit or by the hour? Ask for information about
the cleaning supplies and process. Does the company bring their cleaning supplies and equipment, or do you need to have those on hand? What types of cleaning products do they use? Steam cleaning involves applying a cleaning agent to the carpet with a brush, penetrating the carpet fibers with high-pressure hot water, and extracting the hot water with a vacuum. Dry cleaning uses a mechanical brush to apply a compound that binds to dirt and is then vacuumed. Bonnet cleaning mainly cleans a

carpet’s surface with a spinning pad soaked in a cleaning solution. Shampooing consists of applying a foaming substance with a brush machine that works the solution into the carpet and then removes the shampoo and dirt through wet vacuuming. Encapsulation works foam detergents into the carpet with a machine, and the foam crystallizes into a powder that is vacuumed up. Which type of carpet cleaning do you need? To protect your carpet warranty, be sure to review the manufacturer’s suggested cleaning method before hiring a professional carpet cleaner. Cleaning services should be licensed and insured and have professionally certified technicians. Determining whether you should clean your carpets once a year or more often depends upon various factors such as carpet warranty, presence of children or pets, carpet color, and even allergies. Fall is also a great time to clean the windows, but there’s no need to risk your safety on a ladder. In addition to saving you time and energy, professional window cleaners can identify issues that might otherwise go unnoticed, like wood rot, window screen problems, and damaged windows. These problems can lead to expensive repairs if not caught early. Generally speaking, you should only need to hire a professional window cleaner once or twice a year. Professional window cleaners can also Love Has No Race - sixth.indd 1 help prolong the life of windows. They can remove insect infestations like bees, hornets, and ladybugs that may be creating operational issues for windows. Professionals can treat unsightly glass deposit buildup that can lead to cracks and chips. These individuals the use proper cleaning products to clean, not damage, the glass. Before hiring a window cleaner, ask questions. How long have they been in business? Are they licensed and insured? What is included in the service? For example, do they clean the interiors, exteriors, or both? What cleaning solution do they use? Obtain referrals from family and friends, and ask to speak with previous customers. Hiring professionals to handle some of the responsibilities of running a home provides an opportunity for you to look forward to your days off work, and it will likely leave your house cleaner than you would have managed on your own. Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Original Beauty in Your Home
By Angella A. Arndt
Are you looking for a beautiful piece of wall art to bring a room together? Do you enjoy giving gifts that are truly one of a kind? Have you always wanted to speak to the artist who created an original work? If you answered“Yes!”to any of these questions, you must make a visit to Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery in downtown Ralston. Debra was born in England, where her father was stationed during his service in the U.S. Air Force, and she has always been an artist. At age three, she had a drawing featured on the children’s television show “Romper Room.” At age 12, she won an Omaha World-Herald coloring contest and used the prize (a $25 paint store gift certificate) to purchase acrylic paints, brushes, and canvasses. She received a set of oil paints at the age of 14 and found her passion. Debra earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Bellevue College in 1978 and began her career as a graphic artist before quitting work to raise her children. She eventually got into real estate and began producing art renderings of homes for a builder. She started receiving requests for renderings of commercial buildings and artistic note cards, which transitioned into a full-time business. Her husband, Don, encouraged Debra to pursue her artistic passion, and she began teaching art classes from home. In 1996, she purchased a building in downtown Ralston, where she expanded her art class offerings and opened a gallery. After about five years, opportunities to travel and paint arose, so Debra cut back on teaching regular classes and closed the gallery. In March of 2018, Debra reopened her gallery in Ralston. Debra is now a nationally acclaimed and award-winning artist who specializes in landscapes, seascapes, and portrait paintings in oils. She is well known for her impressionistic landscape paintings and loves plein air work. Plein air is a French term meaning “out of doors.” In this style, paintings are created entirely outside in order to capture the feeling of the outdoor light and air. In what turned out to be a defining moment, Debra took a plein air workshop from Kevin Macpherson in Bermuda in 1999. “He looked at my portfolio and told me to stop painting from photos and start painting from life,” Debra recalls. “‘If you do that,’ he said, ‘we will read about you someday.’” Kevin became her mentor, and the two remain friends. Debra is especially drawn to settings where light and colors create a specific mood. “I love to capture the feel of the time of day. Light and shadows change. Painting the light on location is so much fun.” Debra is also known for portraiture. Omaha Performing Arts commissioned her to paint the portrait 62

of Richard and Mary Holland that hangs in Omaha’s Holland Performing Arts Center. She has Debra Joy Groesser, Artist-Owner been commissioned to paint various art pieces, including portraits, memorial portraits, pets, and special places. Contrary to popular belief, Debra asserts, commissioned art can be affordable. If you’re seeking commissioned work, she advises, “Make sure you are familiar with the artist’s work and like their style. Does the artist specialize in your desired medium? Ask to see samples.” The gallery features original art and gift items, including functional and decorative wood pieces created by Debra’s husband, Don, such as segmented vases, cheese and bread boards, and wine stoppers. Visitors will find calendars, note cards, wine glasses, coffee mugs, canvas bags, and children’s books showcasing Debra’s art. “We have something for everyone,” Debra says. The gallery occasionally hosts special events featuring guest artists, and visitors may find Debra painting in the window during gallery hours. Debra is President and CEO of the American Impressionist Society, Inc. (AIS), a national non-profit art organization. AIS is holding a national juried exhibition at Gallery 1516 in Omaha from September 9 through December 12, 2021. Debra’s art will be featured in a solo exhibition titled “Yes, This Is Nebraska” at the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City, Nebraska. The exhibit will run from November 18, 2021, through March 13, 2022. Debra enjoys talking to gallery guests about her paintings. Sometimes, people tell her they feel “like they’ve been on vacation” when they look at her pieces, which she finds particularly gratifying. Her advice for people shopping for art is: “If you see a piece you love, don’t let it go. If it makes you happy, buy it.” Debra Joy Groesser Fine Art Gallery is located at 5615 South 77th Street, in Ralston. The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, by appointment, or by chance (if Debra is in the studio, painting). You can reach the gallery at 402-592-6552 or at debrajoygroesserfineart.com.

Positive Perspective
Breathe A Self-Care Tool
By Janet Van deWalle
Self-care. Hmm. How are you doing with this? “Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It’s sanity.” —Katrina Maye Over the last 18 months, I have watched so many women become heroes…for their children, spouses, and bosses. Some of you have had to handle school at home. Some of you had to homeschool and work your own job remotely. Some of you had to do all this and take care of aging parents or grandparents. I don’t know how you do it. “Be kind. Be patient. Be generous. Be accepting. Be all of these things to yourself. That is where it begins.” —Anonymous Being kind to ourselves is something that many of us are not very good at. We put our needs and wants at the bottom of the list…if we even make it onto the list at all. We have so very much on our plates! It’s hard to switch it all off. I, for one, did this for many years. I admit that, at times, I still find myself heading down that rabbit hole. “Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.” —Oprah Winfrey
So, what to do? I have a list of things that help me change my energy—things that I can do by myself, for myself. I thought I’d share! 1) I subscribe to an app called Tapping Solution by Nick Ortner. My daughter, Carissa, shared this with me a few years back. It took me a while to dig into it, but it has turned out to be one of the most helpful tools in my toolbox to take care of me. It is a scientifically proven means of lowering the stress in your body. 2) I listen to guided mediations. I’m not one of those people who can sit and think about “nothing.” Guided meditations help me be a better person. My favorite? The Hay House Evening Meditation. 3) I listen to happy music. My favorite? Jason Mraz. He is one of the most positive musicians out there. “Self-care is how you take your power back.” —Lalah Delia It’s important to have tools that help you take care of yourself. Then, when you decide to be better to yourself, you have ways to make it happen sooner rather than later. You know what? You’re worth it! “Self-care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.” —Katie Reed
