nother beautiful holiday season is in the books and we have just stepped into a new decade. I love January and the hope each new year brings. Most of us follow the season of thankfulness and generosity with a season of self-reflection and longing for growth. This edition has some great articles to set you on the path of promise in 2020. Whether you are looking for great low-carb recipes, wisdom on health or a winter wellness plan, we have something for you this month. The January edition is a staff favorite because it contains our annual bridal guide. As we compiled this edition it was hard to believe that it has been 20 years since we welcomed a new millennium and even harder for me to believe that it has been 20 years since I was planning my wedding. This year’s bridal guide features non-traditional wedding venues, unique favors and the new trend of bridal swap shows and sites. We hope you love this special section as much as we do!
As we enter the first year of this new decade I’d like to leave you with one of my favorite scriptures, a blessing from our family to yours:
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. – Numbers 6:25-26 We at Women’s LifeStyle wish you a prosperous and productive 2020. Let’s make it the best year yet! LOTS OF LOVE,

Winter Wellness Plan Building a
While the holidays are behind us, winter is still in full swing. Many of us can “hold on” through the holidays, but once they are over it can be challenging to stay energized, focused, or motivated. With supermarkets, artificial lighting, and central heating, our bodies are a little confused about what to do this time of year. In ancient times, winter meant limited food, sun, and heat and changing our diets and spending extra time sleeping in a warm bed was likely useful. Today, hibernating seems out of place and can create difficulties with productivity and overall health. Staying well in the winter, for many people, requires extra attention. Putting together a winter wellness guide for yourself can help you to overcome these challenges. There are eight dimensions of wellness to consider when putting together a winter wellness plan: Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Social, Spiritual, Environmental, Occupational, & Financial. Within each dimension, you likely have strengths and areas of growth. Let's take a closer look at each one to help you create your plan!
Physical Wellness
Physical activity and diet often look different in the winter, and probably should! Give yourself permission to change up your routine and shopping list. Try new recipes using seasonal items at the grocery store. Cook warm, soothing meals. Use this time of year to incorporate more stretching exercises at home. Our ability to engage in activity changes in the winter is challenged but not impossible if we give ourselves permission to expand our routine.

Emotional Wellness
It is very common for people to have mood changes during the winter. This can be due to lack of sunshine or light in general, challenges with family members, trauma history, memories of loss, or something else. Sadness and a lack of motivation make it hard to accomplish anything on top of a dreary time of year. However, winter can also bring a chance to reflect, to remember, and to plan. Make a list of what you can do to be emotionally well during the winter. These may be things you do year around (like keeping a journal), but just need to be reminded to do them again.
can make an already packed routine suddenly feel overwhelming. We can start to feel very isolated if we don’t leave the house. Make a list of things that provide meaning to your day or week. Create some rhythm or routine to parts of your day that you do have control over. Winter can be the perfect time to start volunteering, start a new hobby, or tackle a project (at home or work)!
Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual wellness can mean many different things to different people. At the root, however, is finding a sense of personal purpose. For some that’s attending church and for others it’s being in nature or meditating. Consider how you can renew or refresh your purpose. Make a plan to maintain that practice to help find meaning, peace, and purpose during the winter. This could be as simple as expressing gratitude everyday or as in depth as exploring your own values and beliefs.
Environmental Wellness
“Cabin fever” is a real thing. Staying indoors more often due to weather can cause and increase in mental health challenges. One can feel trapped if their home doesn’t bring comfort or a sense of peace. This can compound the mystery that people feel during the winter as it limits your ability to be in the sun, outside, or just drive to the store. What can you do to recreate your indoor space? What are some new ways you can enjoy the outdoors?
Occupational Wellness
Whether you are currently working or not, additional responsibilities during this time of year, changes in routine or schedule due to the weather, and illnesses can add more stress. It
Social Wellness
Winter can be isolating. It takes extra effort to be social and stay connected with others. The holidays can feel like a big burst of social

activity, leaving you feeling alone when they are over. Identify your support system and stay connected. That could be in person or maybe it’s a monthly skype date with friends from around the country. Pay attention to what works for you - do you need more or less social engagement in the winter? How can you enrich your social wellness? Know your limits and plan for a proper balance of activity and relaxation.
as well. This sluggishness can affect energy levels, concentration, or desire to do anything but watch t.v. Find ways to keep yourself mentally sharp during the winter. Hit up the library for a good book, try a crossword or sudoku puzzle, or even switch up your binge worthy drama series on Netflix for a documentary.
Financial Wellness
Intellectual Wellness
It can be easy to “shut down” when the sun goes down. In the summer that means we tend to be productive well into the evening. With it turning dark at 5pm during the winter, we had a tendency to end our days work around then

Yes, shopping for the holidays can put a dent in your finances. Past that, heating costs and electricity bills are higher all winter long and can create additional financial strain. The emotional slump after the holidays can something contribute to impulse spending as well. January provides a fresh financial start and is a perfect time to create a plan. Review your finances from 2019 and set your goals for 2020. Learn from your spending habits and set goals to improve them. Identify where you can better manage your spending and see what small steps you can take each month to save.
These eight dimensions overlap. They do not create a perfect wheel. Therefore, a boost in one can create a boost in another. Your plan should reflect your unique lifestyle and provide a helpful visual to identify your areas of strength and growth. Play with your plan and keep it close until spring arrives! START OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH
L
Weight Loss Success BY DR. OSTERHOUT, FOUNDER OF VITALITY HEALTHCARE
et Vitality Healthcare help you achieve your New Year’s Resolution. Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that being overweight is common, serious, and costly. About 40% of middleaged adults are overweight or obese, and almost 50% of adult Americans have heart disease. It is a national health issue, but the reality is no one has to be a victim to a body that is struggling to lose weight.
One of the modern-day challenges with weight loss is that our bodies aren’t functioning like previous generations. Back in the day, the typical advice was ‘’reduce your calories and increase your exercise’’ to lose weight. Today’s average American is exposed to pesticides, herbicides, steroids, antibiotics, growth hormones, GMOs, and way too much sugar. The average American consumes about 150 lbs of sugar per year. Just 100 years ago it was 18 lbs of sugar per year. Our genes cannot tolerate such an overexposure and expect to have healthy outcomes. Vitality Healthcare is a medical and natural healing center. Our focus is to identify, detoxify, and heal the underlying reasons why you are struggling with any health condition. One of our exciting services is the incredibly effective personalized weight loss and coaching program. This program eliminates the confusion around weight loss and puts a focus on your unique metabolism, hormonal imbalances, and personal health challenges.
WE HAVE 4 WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMS THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE: KETO: Contains 70% fats, 25% proteins, 5% carbohydrates (20-50 grams a day). The ketogenic diet is a very low-carb diet that directs your body to switch its fuel supply to fat as an energy source instead of using carbohydrates. This reduces fat storage
Dr. Osterhout on Fox 17’s “Ask the Doctor” segment hormones and encourages fat burning! The cravings just fade away.
PALEO: Contains 55% fats, 35% protein, and 10% carbohydrates. Many of our typical jobs require us to sit all day. When you combine the lack of movement with modern diets which are loaded with sugar, hydrogenated fats, and processed foods, you create an inflammatory fire in the body. This fire sabotages our mood and motivation, while creating an inability to lose weight.
MEDITERRANEAN: Abundant in fruits,
vegetables, select grains, legumes, lean sources of protein like fish, and a splash of red wine. This is a great diet and lifestyle to follow after we heal your metabolism and overcome some of your health challenges.
HCG AND MEDI CATION: Our fastest weight reduction program. After a medical evaluation, we use a bioidentical hormone, B12 injections, and lipo-tropic injections that rapidly reset your metabolism to burn stored fat. We are basically retraining your brain to remember what it’s like to burn fat again. Patients often lose 40-50lbs in 14 weeks.
These methods are proven to reduce the incidence of diabetes, heart disease, cancer, memory and mood issues not to mention you will look and feel great because of it.
We have such great success with weight loss programs that after completion patients want to continue working on themselves. This is where our regenerative medicine is highly beneficial. We offer natural joint injections to heal achy knees and shoulders so you can be active; natural facelifts that regenerate the skin; sexual rejuvenation for men and women. These are safe, effective therapies to compliment anyone’s interest in recovering all aspects of their health.
Vitality Healthcare is an integrated medical and natural healing center. We use appropriate medical approaches in combination with the best natural medicine to increase our patient’s success for overcoming health issues of all kinds.
Start off the new year with weight loss success. Visit our website to see Dr. Osterhout’s TV segment on Fox 17 and read more about our amazing services and patient testimonials.

LOOK WHO’S TALKING
Brooke Dumas Owner, Stellaluna Events
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF I grew up in the small town outside of Kalamazoo, Otsego, where I spent a lot of time planning prep rallies, fundraisers and all school events. As I was graduating and trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life, my mom mentioned I should go to school to become an event planner. I laughed at first, but after a quick Google search I realized that you actually could do that. I went to GVSU and earned my degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. After a short time in corporate event-planning, I learned that I wasn’t fond of the corporate world. This lead me to starting my wedding planning business, Stellaluna Events.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER.
My experience in wedding planning started in 2013 when I held my first internship at an events venue in Kalamazoo, Cityscape Events. There I learned a lot about the venue and catering side of wedding planning, which has helped me so much in my career. Throughout college and my internships I had a lot of opportunities for independent wedding planning, which inspired
10
January 2020
my passion and confidence to go out on my own and start my wedding planning company. I started Stellaluna Events on a snowy (aka blizzard) day in March 2016 and after 11 months as a side business, I was able to go full time with Stellaluna Events.
WHAT STEERED YOU TOWARD THIS CAREER?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A LONG DAY?
I’m a big fan of being outside, especially in the warm months. Swimming, biking, walking, running or even enjoying a cocktail on the deck. It helps to really ground me and come down after a busy day.
I have a passion for creating fulfilling experiences for people. Beyond pretty décor, gorgeous flowers and good music. I love events that gather a unique group of people in a room that may have never met each other before to create community, connections and celebrate a milestone and cause. It is really special to get people together, face-to-face, to create memories.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE INDULGENCE?
TELL US ABOUT A WOMAN WHO TRULY INSPIRES YOU.
I’m a huge animal lover and care deeply about animal rights. I am getting more involved in animal shelters, helping anyway I can. I also care greatly about keeping our water resources clean. I love to take part in beach clean ups and working on becoming less wasteful & more sustainable in my own home.
I am really inspired by Ellen DeGeneres. To me Ellen does what she speaks and is the essence of the saying “everybody love everybody” –which I firmly believe we were put on this earth to do. I admire her positivity, humor and overall outlook on life.
I love traveling and try to do it anytime I can, even if it’s a quick trip to Northern Michigan. I am so inspired by other surroundings and immersing myself into new cultures and experiences.
WHAT CAUSES ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU?
WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com
Above photo by @amandawphoto The number one reason people say they hired a wedding coordinator: “I just want my family, friends and myself to be able to relax and enjoy the day.” Weddings are a huge undertaking, especially on the day. It is so easy to underestimate how much time and energy will need to go into set-up, execution and clean-up and often times family, wedding party members, etc. are the ones that get stuck doing it all.
To the right: Brooke (short blonde on the right) and owner, lead planner, marketing manager, custodian, IT department, balloon arch guru, etc. Basically right now: the COE (chief of everything). To the left is Scout and she is a coordination wizard, listening ear and entrepreneur herself with her handlettering and wood working biz @stockbridgedesignco
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES? How you feel through the wedding planning process and on your wedding day is a choice. Things will go wrong. People will make comments. Your Aunt Joyce may constantly compare your wedding to her daughter’s six-figure wedding. But you get to decide if you are going to let those things bother you or if you’re going to look past them, still enjoy the process and have the best day ever. When clients walk away from their wedding day saying it was “the best day ever,” it isn’t because everything went flawlessly. It is because they choose to have fun and focus on what really matters. They didn’t get hung up on the things that didn’t go “as planned.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OF YOUR WEDDING DAY? It sounds so cliché & cheesy, but being surrounded by all my favorite people & feeling so much love and happiness. I am not an overly emotional person, but I was truly humbled by all the love I felt on our wedding day. SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN
MAGAZINE | EXPO
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Making the happiest day of people’s lives happen for them. It’s that simple. I love watching my clients have the best time and feel all the love in the room.
ANY ADVICE FOR FRIENDS/FAMILY OF THE COUPLE?
Support and love them. The wedding planning process is stressful for the couple. They are trying to manage a lot of different expectations and opinions, so do what you can to help them out, make it easier on them and support them. Even if its being a listening ear or helping them stuff and mail invitations. Knowing you have a supportive community around you is so helpful and important.
IF YOU COULD REDO ANYTHING FROM YOUR WEDDING DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Host a farewell brunch the next day, even if it was just donuts and coffee. We hosted our wedding in Northern Michigan and all of our guests had to travel. The day before the wedding we hosted a welcome bonfire on the
beach, which was a total blast getting to greet guests as they came into town. And after our wedding we hosted an after party, but since that party went so late into the night, I didn’t feel like I got to do a real farewell to our guests and thank them for coming. So I would have loved to do a quick brunch the next day just to be able to give everyone one last hug and thank them before they headed home.
ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO SAY TO THE READERS OF WOMEN’S LIFESTYLE?
I’m a big believer that you should create the life you want and a business or career to support it. Often times we are taught to do that the other way around, but life is far too short to be coasting along, not 100% happy and just praying for the day we get to retire. Do what fills you up, excites you and challenges you –think about what you want your life to look like and what type of business, career or venture would get you there – then do it! You’re So
T
Lucky to Be Healthy
his is something I hear frequently. I appreciate that most people view me as a great example of a healthy person and I am very grateful for my excellent health. Every passing year (and they go waaaaay too fast!) my appreciation and gratitude for my excellent health grows deeper and deeper. But the statement is simply not true.
PART 1
For many years in response to someone saying, “You’re so lucky to be healthy,” I would simply smile and say something like, “Yes, I am very fortunate,” or simply, “Thank you.” But after many years of being told how “lucky” I am to be healthy, I realized that I needed to clear up a major misconception.
number one priority. There are times when I will choose my health over my family and vice versa, depending on the circumstances. When I choose my health over my family, it does not mean that I love them less. It is because I love them so much, and also love myself, that I make that choice.
If you remember nothing else from this article, please remember this: I am not healthy because I am lucky. I am healthy because I choose to be healthy. I work very hard at being healthy. Every day. I don’t live in a bubble. I live life. I enjoy some of the “unhealthy” foods from time to time, but I never forget that health is a daily choice. My choice. Not my doctor’s, not my family’s nor anyone whom I love. It is my choice. If we take care of our body, our body will take care of us!
If I am not healthy–whether it is mentally, emotionally, spiritually or physically–I cannot contribute as much to my family, to my community or to myself. And if my not being healthy lasts a long time, it is highly likely that I could become a burden on my family. When someone’s health deteriorates, it doesn’t affect just them; it has a ripple effect on virtually everyone in their life. If their health deteriorates significantly, in addition to becoming a possible burden, it can cause a strain on relationships and finances. That creates more stress which negatively affects the body’s health even more and so the cycle continues.
There is a great quote by Mark Hyman that my daughter, Ashley Carter Youngblood, highlights on her social media. It says:
“Your body is the smartest doctor in the room – it will tell you what works and what doesn’t – by what happens to your weight and how you feel.” This is the absolute truth. If you don’t have to be concerned about your weight, consider yourself blessed. But we all have to, and must, be concerned about how we feel! There is only thing more important to me than my health. My family. Actually, my health and my family are tied as my
12
January 2020
My health is as good as it is because my mom and dad were great examples and because I “listen” to my body; when it tells me that it needs more attention, most everything else takes a back seat for however long it takes for my body to let me know it is better. Listen to my body? Absolutely. Sounds sort of silly. Does the body really “talk?” You bet it does. Constantly. I am healthy because I do listen to my body. Very carefully. It talks to me every day and I am “all ears.” Our bodies are talking to us all the time. Your body is talking to you right now. Are you listening? Why Retreat
The “Overview Effect”
Edward Gibson, astronaut and Skylab 4 pilot, explained his feelings when from space he looked back at planet Earth:
“
You see how diminutive your life and concerns are compared to other things in the universe… The result is that you enjoy the life that is before you… It allows you to have inner peace.”
This is called the “Overview Effect,” a cognitive shift that occurs in astronauts arising during space flight -an altered perception of their home as a fragile and vulnerable ball of life. From this vantage point, worries that carried such significance vanish into thin air. This is how and why we must retreat every year. Human problems are made by humans. And by focusing on them with increasing passion and strength, we sap the energies which keep us connected to the magic of our existence. Carl Sagan said, “There is perhaps no better a
demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.”
It is written in the Vedas (books of truth from the Hindu tradition) that an adult should construct a sadhana (retreat) once annually of no less than 10 days. A retreat is different than a vacation in that you are conducting yourself in ways that recharge you in three ways: your mind, your body, and your soul. While on vacation you might be moving around a lot, eating great food, taking in entertainment, and talking a lot with a spouse or family member, gambling, etc. But during retreat, you are stopping all behaviors of extreme attachment and pulling inward to be still. You are alone, silent, studious with important, enlightening books, and maybe a bit creative also. A retreat is a disciplined space of 10 days wherein you can regain your yoga or meditation practice, catch up on sleep and regain a regular schedule of meals. It is a time to bring your body back into a natural state of existence, living and working with the sun and moon.
“
We are looking for happiness and running after it in such a way that creates anger, fear and discrimination. So when you retreat, you have a chance to look at the deep roots of this pollution of the collective energy that is unwholesome.” -Thich Nhat Hanh
The retreat space is your opportunity to look back at your life, like an astronaut looking at the Earth from afar, and decide what’s important and what should be left to develop without so much struggle. It
14

takes about 3 days for an astronaut to reach the moon’s orbit and look back at her home with this gift of awe. It will take about this long for you to pull away from the thinking habits of your daily life, and look back at your life with the overview effect. And another 3 days for you to take it all in – every magical gift and opportunity that has knitted your pathway to now. And another 3 days to make your peaceful stance in gratitude. And the final day is spent in the moving forward energy of coming back to the world. These 10 days annually are the best gift you can give your family – a promise that you will come back clearer, happier, recharged, and ready to walk taller on your own path. The Case Against Making a
New Year ’s Resolution
I
t’s that time of year again: the time for New Year’s resolutions. But, before you go making goals for the new year, consider how making a New Year’s resolution may actually cause you to be less in touch with the life you are living. Instead, for this year, consider how NOT making a New Year’s resolution may be the best thing that we can do to start this New Year off on the right foot. THE SLIPPERY SLOPE
As the New York Post reports, only around eight percent of people actually meet their New Year’s resolution goals within that year. But, the case against making a New Year’s resolution is not about statistics. It is about contentment.
It is not that a New Year’s resolution is an inherently bad idea. In fact, New Year’s resolutions can be a great way to honestly reflect on where we are in life and can motivate us to progress further with our well-being. But, how often do we make New Year’s resolutions rooted in discontent; saying things like “This year has been the worst. I can’t wait for it to be next year so that I can move on!” or “Next year will be so much better as I’ll have _____!” or “Bring on 2020! I’m so ready to leave 2019 behind!”?
What happens next, though? In the next new year that we thought was going to be our saving grace, life happens again. It always does. The only thing we can guarantee in life is change and that change seems to rarely happen in ways that we anticipate or feel prepared to handle. So, we find ourselves repeating that desire for it to be a new year every year. This causes us to constantly be rushing the seasons and looking ahead. We wish ourselves right out of our present moment and, instead, are living our lives in anticipation for when it will be a Goldilocks’ style of “just right.”
16
January 2020
We are never content. And, that is a slippery slope that never becomes less steep.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT
How much does this pattern of discontent and mindlessness cause us to miss? What are we wishing away in our life because of what we hope will be better in the future? Can we, instead, practice acknowledging difficult times when they happen, while also recognizing that there is no growth without change? In 2020, what would our lives look like if we simply practiced appreciating and savoring the good times while not feeling pressured to “soak it in” for fear of it changing? Yes, your divorce in 2019 was devastating. But, perhaps it brought you unexpectedly closer to your children. It’s true that you would not wish this year’s job loss on even your worst enemy but it has allowed you more free time to find your creativity and re-discover how much you love and are skilled at photography. Maybe the death of that beloved pet has allowed you to rediscover your love for travelling unencumbered by first making arrangements for a pet sitter.
WE FIND WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Psychologically speaking, we find what we are looking for. This phenomenon is called “selective attention” or “confirmation bias.” If we are rushing the year to be over just so that we can start the next one from scratch, we
will only be able to see and recall the difficult things – missing out on our opportunities for learning and growth.
Being able to be present in our lives does not mean simply waiting to be done with this year. This is not sustainable because the only moment we ever have to live is this one. Right now…. And, now this one… repeating this pattern of each moment into eternity.
As J.K. Rowling reminds us, “It does not do well to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” So, for this year, DON’T make a New Year’s resolution. And, instead, LIVE… the tears, the joy, and the change. All of it.
For this coming year, simply observe the good and the bad and appreciate each moment as it presents itself. Even with this, if you are still looking for a good ritual to create closure with 2019 and usher you into 2020, consider making a list of lessons learned and growth you have made. Identify positive affirmations to repeat to yourself for this coming year. Make a gratitude journal. Keep your focus as 2020 begins. Just me mindful that its is not on the future or on what “should have been.” Ashley Carter Youngblood owns two businesses: one as a psychotherapist and the other as a life coach for those looking for a more intimate approach to growth. On the Pursuit of Happiness H
appy New Year, and new decade, to you as we breach the 20s (sans the flappers and prohibition). It also ushers in a century of women gaining the right to vote (go us!). And sure, improvement can still be had for us ladies going forward, but compared to a century ago, we are doing well for ourselves. That being said, with the arrival of the new year, improvements and change is the name of the game. I’m sure you and countless others have already started working on those infamous resolutions. Promises to yourself to be better, look better, have more fun and whatever else falls onto that scale. And while I too, am looking to an improved year ahead, I have a different take to the yearly promises to oneself I’d like to offer to you to try. Something I’ve personally replaced my “resolutions” with at the year mark.
And all you have to do is ask yourself one simple question:
“Am I happy?” To be fair, the small assembly of words is the more simplistic portion of this question. The question itself unfortunately will feel a bit loaded. Continuing … Years ago, I came across some literature where an individual would on a daily basis, look at himself in the mirror, and ask himself if he was, in fact, happy. The benefit to this is looking into your own eyes should hopefully force you to be honest with yourself; doing so daily can give one insight on what exactly is making you happy, or unhappy as correlated with the day’s events. Myself, I wasn’t ready for that kind of commitment. But after noticing my more somber and near, we’ll coin it “meh” life mood some years
18
January 2020
ago (looking thirty near in the eye), I decided to give the question a try. I had a lot of wonderful things going for me between my job, home, life, family … but something had to change. I wasn’t happy. Following that evening and a few weeks of thought to the question, my results of unhappiness stemmed on an unhappy (and later ended) marriage, and the need for a more serious pursuit of my writing career. And while the above was an extreme result of asking “Am I happy?”, it brought to light something I realized I didn’t do enough of.
That was being in touch with myself, while also highlighting a little of what you have heard a lot about this last year: self care. Articles, books, podcasts and many other items have been flooding the market recently all with one goal, and that is to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Knowing yourself. Loving yourself. And should include, finding your happiness. We are truly in a blessed and cursed era, where so much is available to us to participate in, take in, read, play, act on, etc. We are more lost than maybe our prior counterparts (including our racy, hoochdrinking 20th century, leading ladies).
And in this new decade where we are pushing for self care and taking care of ourselves, we are the most guilty of being wrapped up in everything we need to finish or do, inherently failing to spend time with ourselves and really getting to know where we are at whether as a goal, or just how we are feeling. Did we accomplish what we have wanted? Is there something we haven’t done or embarked on because we were too scared to take it on, or thought it impossible? Are we just outright miserable? While I know my earlier personal trial is a bit glazed over on details and clearly the higher end of the scale of changes, this little question surrounding your actual happiness can still be applied to any and everything. It can be something as simple as wanting to drink more water because you have heard it helps keep your skin clear, you feel more awake and it is just darn good for you. But, alas, perhaps your happiness does depend on something bigger. Fret not. I ask you not to be afraid of that. As cliche as it sounds, the things that are the most terrifying to take on, are the ones that are worth the risk, because you know you have something to lose if you don’t. And patience will be your biggest enemy in this, as you will need to exercise it frequently. Unfortunately, life will get in the way and you just can’t achieve what you want to, exactly when you want to. Changes take time to fully take shape. But before we get to all of that. It’s time to give yourself a few minutes, take a deep breath, and ask yourself, “Am I happy?”

Bridal Guide 2020
Bridal Swap Shows & Sites
The cake has been cut. The dance has been done. Honeymoon is over. You are settled into your new life as a wife and as you look at all of the items it took you months or years to collect for your dream wedding. One question is in the forefront of your mind. What am I going to do with all of this stuff?? ENTER THE WEDDING SWAP. In the age of reduce, reuse, recycle, there is a growing trend in the wedding world where former brides and wedding vendors offer lovingly used wedding items for significant discounts. One of the best places to take advantage wedding swap trend is online. Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and Letgo are great sites to look for décor. When searching these sites, try to expand your search parameter to include at least one metropolitan area as you are likely to find a much larger selection to browse. On Facebook, look for a local Bridal group, like “Bride 2 Bride West Michigan” or “It’s All About the Dress. Pay it Forward.”
20
January 2020
If you are looking for fashion or accessories, try Poshmark, Gilt, The Real Real or ThreadUp for designer items at discount prices. The truth about the gowns and accessories we so lovingly select for our wedding day is they just don’t have much purpose (aside from sentimental value) after “I do” and this makes it rather easy to find drastic discounts on these pieces. As the popularity of online wedding swaps grows, the industry is seeing a rise in wedding swap shows. Do a quick Google search and you’re bound to find a wedding swap show within 100 miles. While that might sound like quite a hike, once you see the venue packed with deals, you won’t regret the trip. A friend and her soon to be daughter-in-law just attended a swap show in Chicago and found so many great deals, they couldn’t believe their luck. A FEW TIPS IF YOU ARE READY TO ENTER THE WEDDING SWAP WORLD. When buying items online, make
sure to meet the seller in a safe location and take someone along. While most online sellers are wonderful people, you will never regret the decision to play it safe. If you are paying with a credit card, make sure that the seller is using a secure platform that protects your financial information. When attending a bridal swap show, dress comfortably. You will most likely spend hours shopping and touring a large venue, our advice is to sacrifice fashion for function and wear your yoga pants and sneakers instead of that cute dress and heels. My final surprise was to learn that you can also include private time in the gallery for your guests! That’s a benefit you won’t find in a traditional venue. Old, New, Borrowed, Blue
Something Old
Part tradition and part good luck charm, something old represents continuity. While the tradition of a daughter wearing her mom’s wedding gown has faded, a great way to repurpose mom’s gown and incorporate it into your wedding day look is to use the beading or lace from the “old” gown and incorporate it into your wedding dress or bouquet.
Something New
Optimism and hope for the future are the message conveyed by something new. The traditional item filling this spot is a gift from your fiancé. A broach or piece of jewelry is a wonderful choice and can be passed down through generations of your family to fill the something old or borrowed need of future generations.
Something Borrowed Something Blue A borrowed item symbolizes your family and the community surrounding you on your wedding day and in the new life you are starting. A great choice is a piece of family jewelry. Your grandmother’s pearls, your mom’s favorite earrings or your best friend’s stunning hair clips are all great options.
Brides in ancient Rome wore blue to symbolize love, modesty and fidelity. It was also worn to ward off the “evil eye.” Today’s bride can incorporate blue in so many ways. Blue flowers in your bouquet, a blue garter or blue embroidery on the inside of your wedding gown are all popular choices for today’s bride.
No matter what traditions you choose to incorporate into your special day, make sure to stay true to you. While traditions are fun they aren’t “requirements.” Find the things you love and focus your energy there. 24

Your Guide to Planning the Perfect
Rehearsal Dinner You said “I DO”, next comes the most magical time of your life – planning the start of the rest of your lives together! After the engagement party, bridal party, and bachelorette parties, and everything else in between, comes the rehearsal dinner. This dinner brings both families together as the final event before the big day. The rehearsal dinner is essentially the bridge that takes the couple, the family, and the wedding party from planning mode to wedding weekend party mode!
Traditionally the rehearsal dinner is given the night before the wedding by the parents of the Groom. Everyone from out of town is invited and it’s usually a formal affair. But, like everything else wedding related, the so-called standards are changing over the years. While some still keep the tradition and make it a formal occasion, other couples are putting their own unique twist on their rehearsal dinners. Some couples opt to keep it more casual with a smaller intimate get together, a themed party, or plan a night out on the town with friends at your favorite bar. With all of the changes over the decades, one thing remains the same – the planning process!
FIRST: THE GUEST LIST
The guest list for your rehearsal dinner is really up to you! You can keep it traditional with family, the wedding party, and their plus ones. Another option, open it up to all out-oftown guests, especially if you’re having a destination
28
January 2020
wedding or guests are traveling some distance. By opening up the list to your rehearsal dinner, it gives you more quality time with your guests than you’ll be able to get on the wedding day, and in a much more casual setting. Looking to go the formal route? Create your list including immediate family, the wedding party and their plus ones, and any close friends you wish to invite. Design paper invitations with an RSVP so you can allow time to book your venue or restaurant and you have a head count. This creates less stress if you have booked a restaurant with 25 people and aunt Karen decides last minute to show up with her husband, you won’t be surprised or stressed out by the additions.
If you are looking to go the less formal route, you can always send out an e-vite or put the rehearsal information on your wedding website. (The Knot and WeddingWire are two great sites to keep
track of your wedding planning!) Remember, all that matters is that everyone has the information they need – don’t stress on how it gets delivered. No matter how you wish to send your invites, 4 weeks before the rehearsal dinner is a good timeline to follow, as it allows your guests enough time to plan and RSVP. It will also leave you more time to plan decorations and food for the event. Once you have your guest list complete, now it’s time to choose a venue.
SECOND: THE VENUE
Kalamazoo offers many fabulous locations for bridal parties, rehearsal dinners, and stunning wedding venues. Find the one that suits you and your budget.
BraVo! Restaurant & Café offers several private rooms to host your rehearsal dinner and you can keep it as formal or informal as you wish. The best part? They have been hosting rehearsal dinners for many years and they do all of the work for you. No set up or clean up! You can also get the food catered out if you wish to host the rehearsal dinner at your home.

The Henderson Castle offers a unique one-of-a-kind setting no matter what time of the year. The Castle was established in 1895, but has since been renovated offering 10 guest rooms, a guest cottage, a winery, formal dinner setting, spa services, and a hot tub on the roof over-looking downtown Kalamazoo. The Henderson Castle has a winery and would make for a fun wine tasting experience before heading to dinner, and ending with a glass of bubbly and a rooftop sunset depending on the time of year.
The Henderson Castle If you’re looking to keep it casual and have a fun night out on the town with friends, check out Loft 310. They offer over 8 different unique venues downtown in one city block in the entertainment district. Loft 310 can help you create the perfect rehearsal dinner upstairs, and have the perfect after party outside at The SkyDeck or any of the surrounding bars. (This venue is also perfect for your wedding day, too!). Trying to stay budget friendly? Hosting your rehearsal dinner at home (yours or that of a very nice relative or friend) can be a great option! Celebrating at home gives you some level of flexibility not offered by most restaurants or other event venues: You can go totally informal with a backyard BBQ, pizza and beer by the pool, or have everyone bring a dish to pass. The relaxed setting may make it easier to accommodate kids, who have more room to run and play games or even swim. And if everyone’s having a
SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN
MAGAZINE | EXPO
blast and you decide to extend the party longer than originally planned, no problem (and no extra fees!).
NEXT: THEME AND DAY
Once you have decided on your location, you can focus on a theme if you wish, or keep with the colors and style of your wedding. The rehearsal dinner is always held after the ceremony rehearsal. If you aren’t having a ceremony rehearsal, you can have the rehearsal dinner anytime the week before the wedding. Don’t forget to browse Pinterest for some fun ideas that can be budget friendly. Grab a bottle of bubbly, your bridesmaids, and have a sleepover and browse Pinterest or start creating the perfect centerpieces you found on Pinterest together.
TO REMEMBER AT THE DINNER
Regardless of the set-up of your rehearsal dinner, there are some essentials you should consider including. After the meal or during dessert, the host should make a toast to the happy couple, welcoming them into the family. Also making a toast to your wedding
party, family and friends, thanking them for all they have done to help make your wedding day come together. During this time, you could also hand out the wedding party and parent gifts. Now is the perfect time to open the floor for anyone to give a toast, so those who aren’t speaking at the wedding reception have a chance to tell you how much they love you both! Lastly, before the rehearsal dinner wraps up, now is the time to make any lastminute announcements or reminders for the wedding day, such as start times, locations, or transportation details. Above anything else, just have fun and enjoy the moment. Brides tend to stress over every little detail. Remember, rain is good luck. Your ring bearer’s mis-matched socks he put on himself when no one was looking will make for a fun story later. If that’s the worst thing to happen you’re doing pretty good.
Even so, no matter if something doesn’t go as planned – no one knows except you. The day is about YOU marrying your best friend and spending the rest of your life together. Everything else just makes for memorable moments to look back on and hopefully laugh. Speaking from experience ;-) Rachel Kirtley has worked in all levels of the food industry for over a decade. Tips to Enhance Your Wedding Decor
FAMILY FEATURES
Wedding days are meant to be filled with love and celebration, and what better way to ring in the new stage of life as newlyweds than with a well-decorated venue to match the joyous occasion. Whether a couple is on a tight budget or picky when it comes to theme ideas, these decorating tips can help add more flair for the big day.
1 Use a natural venue.
Many couples choose wedding venues that require immense amounts of decorations, but a venue with organic scenery or a beautiful view can help alleviate the stress. Consider having the ceremony near a garden or beach with enough natural surroundings to keep guests in awe.
2 Make the cake a centerpiece.
Wedding cakes are almost guaranteed to be filled with flavor, but they can also serve as a decorative centerpiece for the reception. Choosing a cake topped with flowers, highlighting bright colors and placing it in a prominent spot at the reception can grab guests’ attention while also keeping them eager for a bite.
3 Choose table accessories that pop. TEXT “BRIDE” TO 269-501-1676 AND RECEIVE $100 OFF OF YOUR MEMBERSHIP! Add your fiancé on to your membership for FREE!
Leave guests in amazement as they make their way to their seats for the reception with beautifully decorated tables. Table accessories can be anything ranging from patterned table runners to flowers in full-bloom placed in simple, elegant vases. If you are not having a formal sit-down reception, try using paper lanterns or hanging flowers from the ceiling to create an eye-catching atmosphere to remember.
4 Add classic lighting.
At times, finding the right lighting to match the mood of a wedding venue can be tricky. In this case, less may actually be more. Try opting for a classic candlelit ceremony or reception to create a more romantic setting. This can save both money and countless hours spent attempting to configure elaborate light fixtures, and also provide a timeless feel.
5 Place engagement photos around the venue. MEMBER BENEFITS INCLUDE

With any wedding, you want the day to feel personal and intimate for the couple and guests alike. Consider decorating the venue with engagement photos of the soon-to-be spouses as they popped the question. This can allow the newlyweds to reminisce while guests view those cherished moments and revel in the occasion.

STEAK STEW
BUDDHA BOWL
CRISPY BRUSSEL SPROUTS
SLICED FILLET MIGNON
’m not one of those people who starts a crazy diet right after the New Year; but, I’ll admit that after all the Holiday parties, I definitely crave some healthier, lighter foods and greens.
I asked our nice server what the “soup of the moment” was for that day and she told me a STEAK STEW. I knew I couldn’t resist that! So, I started with a cup of the stew and then ordered the Buddha Bowl for my entree.
I have been dying to get to the area’s newest restaurant, Bird Dog in Mattawan, for some time now and finally made it happen. II was excited to see that they offered fresh, local, and seasonal fare. They were bound to have something that I would enjoy and that would also fit into my cravings of something healthier!
My husband…well he wasn’t feeling the lighter eating so he went with the SLI CED FILLET MIGNON. The filet came with a parmesan risotto and a cabernet reduction. At the last minute, he also asked for some CRISPY BRUSSEL SPROUTS for the table to share. He must have wanted some green after all!
My husband and I arrived at the cute building located downtown Mattawan and were shocked at how busy it was. It’s a super small building, probably only 8-10 tables as well as a long bar. We didn’t have reservations but got lucky because someone else didn’t show up for their reservation.
The stew was so yummy, especially on a cold winter night! It warmed me right up. It tasted like a nice beef stew, but just a little fresher and yummier than what I make at home. I loved all the color, as my cup was topped with scallions and some pickled onions. Beautiful presentation.
The tables are tight, sitting pretty close to each other. That being said, it wasn’t loud in the restaurant, so the close proximity wasn’t a problem at all. It felt cozy and very big city almost. The kitchen is right behind the bar, so you see the cooks working away which is both fun and comforting.
My Buddha Bowl and his Sliced Filet and the Crispy Brussels came out next. All of the dishes were super colorful (which to me is always a sign of fresh food) and super delicious!
As we glanced at the menu, I was immediately drawn to the BUDDHA BOWL. The menu described the dish as a maple vinaigrette, brussel sprouts, herbed farro, and seasoned vegetables. It sounded light and delicious, exactly what I was craving!

The herbed farro was by far the best farro I’ve ever had. The brussels were crispy and a little sweet. There was also some perfectly cooked and divine butternut squash as well as a fresh sliced avocado. The veggies were all amazing. For a meatless meal, it completely filled me up! The maple vinaigrette was just perfect. It
had a slight sweetness to it but balanced all the veggies perfectly. All the textures and flavors together were wonderful. I tried a bite of Filet and risotto and wow! It was super tender. The filet wasn’t overly flavored, but the risotto was super rich and creamy; so, with the combination of that and the awesome cabernet reduction, the meat didn’t need too much flavor. My husband ate every single bite! The crispy brussel sprouts were killer. Again, with a little bit of sweetness to them and crisped to perfection, they were a perfect side dish to balance our meals. (I ended up taking about half of the dish home. It was a lot for two.) Bird Dog was a pleasant surprise. It almost feels like something Joanna Gaines would put together with its white walls and rustic finishes. What a great treasure to find in the small town of Mattawan! The food is super fresh and super inventive. Something for everyone! I was happy to find a lighter meal with real color. I cannot wait to get back to try more! Why Hire a Professional Presence Coach I
f you haven’t been getting ahead professionally or struggling in your confidence to do so, potentially it’s time to look to yourself. Smart career minded professionals refuse to settle, choosing instead to seek the assistance and support needed to take them to that next level of success. This support can come in many forms, including a mentor relationship, attending conferences or courses within your industry, participating in a private or corporate sponsored leadership program, or hiring a personal executive coach.
WHY CONSIDER A PROFESSIONAL PRESENCE COACH
The ‘Why’ first comes in understanding the power that presence, the manner in which you look, act, speak, dress, and appear digitally, possesses. You have most likely read or heard “you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover”, but unfortunately, we do. Statistics tell us that visual impact occurs in the first 7 – 20 seconds of an impression. Many times, with unconscious final decisions made in the mind of the individual or group that you are in front of before you have uttered a word. Next, the process of coaching lends itself to making lasting change. With a series of private (or group) sessions a professional presence coach becomes a partner in your success – assisting in developing selfSOUTHWEST MICHIGAN

confidence, credibility, and a successful professional identity/personal brand. Through spaced repetition and coaching, along with assignments and activities that serve as reinforcement of commitments made, the coachee is transformed from the inside out. According to David Ulrich, Director of Academic Programs for the School of Business Administration for U of M, “85% of change efforts fail to achieve their intended results.” Why? Because they are onetime events with little or no built in accountability and aimed to achieve shotgun results. Coaching, on the other hand, is specifically targeted to the needs of the individual and achieves observable, measurable, lasting results.
KNOWING WHEN YOU’RE READY Timing is everything. Questions to think through, and get solid answers too, when considering if coaching is your next step include: • Are you ready to get to work yourself? An effort must be made on your part. • Are you willing to invest, both in time and funds, knowing that your personal ROI will be big?
• Are you ready to be accountable and set excuses aside? • Are you willing to finish the process? Staying the course to learn, change, and create lasting results.
THE BENEFITS ARE MANY
Know that YOU have the power to create confidence, the power to create poise, and the power to create a strategic presence to achieve every success that you desire.
“YOU are your best asset”
- Kelly Duggan
The differentiator is in the professional that pays attention to the details that create success. For those that make the effort, and take the time to learn and grow, the benefits will be many. Reputation, and how you feel on the inside, is a gift that you give yourself. Remember, the smart career minded professional refuses to settle. If you’re looking to get more out of your career and personal life, professional presence coaching can help. Are you ready to make your mark and be the professional others aspire to be? Shop Talk with
A-1 Printing and Copy Center S
andra Gilman often tells customers that she started A-1 Printing and Copy Center when she was 12 years old, which always results in a little laugh. Sandra opened A-1 Printing and Copy Center in January 1974 and it has been going strong ever since. Customers and visitors are always greeted with a warm, “welcome to the neighborhood” because Sandra believes that is exactly what downtown Kalamazoo is. “Whether we are down here 5 – 7 days a weeks or we live downtown, we are all neighbors and that is a good feeling.” While some things, like a group of incredible customers, have remained unchanged since 1974, A-1 has come a long way from its early days of presses and ink on metal plates, cameras, clip art, white out and cut and paste. A-1 was one of the first shops in the area to become a totally digital print shop. The change was made when Sandra saw a definite need for a cleaner way of printing and the conversion cut shop waste by 90%. Over the past 46 years in business, Sandra and A-1 have triumphed over some incredibly difficult situations. From the time a tornado destroyed the equipment and sucked all of the jobs they

were working on out the front windows, to recovery of an internal theft, damage to the pre-Civil War building caused by a building project, to the restoration of the 100 East Michigan block buildings that obscured foot traffic for over two years. Sandra reflects on these difficult times and offers some advice for business owners. “Owning a business is not a bed or roses, but it can be the most rewarding undertaking you will ever encounter both mentally and financially.” At A-1 Printing & Copy Center the owner and employees pride themselves on serving Kalamazoo County for over 46 years. Over the years, A-1 has made technology upgrades that has allowed them to cut turn around time by 75%. Most projects can be easily completed in a few days with pleasing prices. A-1’s General Manager, Joe Francisco, a graduate of Western Michigan University has a saying, “happy customers, happy printers and copy people. We love what we do each day and it shows. Come see a happy print and copy shop in action and feel the love.” The next time you are downtown on Michigan Avenue, stop into A-1 Printing & Copy Center and say hello to Sandra and the crew. Enjoy More Time Outdoors — Even When it’s Cold COURTESY OF MCC
T
he amount of time people spend outdoors has dramatically decreased, as the Environmental Protection Agency now reports the average American spends 87 percent of his or her time in a residence, school building or workplace. Being outside is linked to better moods, more physical activity and less exposure to contaminants (concentrations of some pollutants are often two to five times higher indoors). Also, people who spend time outside may not come into contact with surface germs or develop various illnesses spread as often as those who spend a lot of time indoors. Cold weather can make the desire to be outside less appealing, but it is important for one’s mental and physical well-being to get outside. The following activities might coax people outside for some crisp air.

Create Snow Critters Why do snowmen and women get all of the fanfare this time of year? Just about any living or fictional creature can be molded from snow and embellish landscapes. Use food-grade coloring in spray bottles to added even more creative flair to snow designs. Go On a Nature Hike While many plants and animals hibernate in winter, there is still plenty to see. Bring along a sketch book or camera and capture nature in winter. White-washed hills can be beautiful to behold, and many small animals and birds look even more vivid against the white backdrop of snow. Make an Obstacle Course Turn an area of the yard or park into a homemade obstacle course. It’s much more difficult — and a great workout — to try to
jump over snow mounds or run down paths when decked out in warm layers. Engage in lighthearted competitions with friends and family members. Build a Bonfire Children can set off in different directions to gather up firewood to craft a bonfire with adults in a safe location. S’mores taste equally delicious whether it’s warm or cold outside, and in winter they can be accompanied by toasty mugs of cocoa. Get Sporty Sledding, skating, snowshoeing, and ice hockey are just a few of the winter sports that can get the heart pumping and muscles working outside. These activities are entertaining and also great exercise. When venturing outdoors in winter, dress in layers. This way clothing can be put on or taking off to reduce the likelihood of hypothermia.

MOMA
Market on Michigan Avenue 121 E. Michigan Ave | Downtown Kalamazoo
Whether you are looking for a bottle of your favorite beer, a delicious snack or one of the best sandwiches in town, look no further than MOMA. Located at 121 E. Michigan Avenue, downtown Kalamazoo, Josh and Jess Marunde have created the perfect “urban micro-grocery”. With new housing options popping up in downtown Kalamazoo every month, the need for access to basic groceries and supplies became paramount and MOMA opened its doors on August 30th to fill the need.
One section of the market offers a variety of GROCERIES, BASIC HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES, BEER, WINE and GOURMET FOOD ITEMS. The beer and wine selection is outstanding! The refrigerated grocery section has some real gems, including a selection of desserts from Paradise Café in Portage. If the wide selection offered in the market weren’t enough, MOMA is also home to a PHENOMENAL DELI that makes some of the best sandwiches in Kalamazoo. Although it took ten minutes to select from the 14 gourmet sandwiches, we highly recommend the Hemmingway – ham, apple, brie, arugula and stone mustard on Sarkozy Brewer’s bread. Delicious is an understatement! The café/delicatessen also offers a fixed menu which can be viewed on their Facebook page. Do yourself a huge favor and check out all of the amazing food options at MOMA. Another little jewel MOMA offers its patrons is an INHOUSE BUTCHER. The selection of local, pastured meats is second to none. No matter what you are looking for, the friendly and skilled butcher at MOMA can get exactly what you have need. Whether you are looking for a few steaks or an entire butcher bundle, look no further that MOMA. Local products, fresh from the farm meats and produce, an extensive wine and beer selection, a gourmet deli, a skilled butcher and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff are just a few of the things that make MOMA shine. So, no matter if you live downtown Kalamazoo or in Mattawan, make the trip to visit Josh, Jess & the MOMA staff, you will thank us!

Ready for Winter Weather TIPS TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE & WARM
FAMILY FEATURES
Winters with heavy snowfall can be magnificent, but they can also be challenging for homeowners. Accumulated snow and ice have the potential to damage many aspects of your home and property, including exterior components of your propane system.
“Propane is one of the safest and most reliable sources of energy in winter,” said Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of the Propane Education Research Council (PERC). “It keeps your home warm and allows you to cook and have hot water. A propane generator ensures that you have reliable power in any weather.” While you can’t predict the first snowstorm or hazardous weather conditions, you can put your family in the best position for safety and warmth by planning ahead.
BE PREPARED n Get
to know your propane system. If you are not familiar with your propane system, take a few minutes to review it. Identify core components, including the tank, regulators, meter, piping and supply valves, as well as any appliance vents. Be sure you know where your main gas supply valve is located in case you need to close it in the event of an emergency; in many cases it may be located on your propane tank.
n Mark
your tank and regulator. Use a brightly colored stake or flag taller than the maximum anticipated snow depth as a marker to enable emergency and propane service personnel to locate your tank. Also
44
January 2020
mark your secondary pressure regulator or meter, which is usually near the side of your home. Check local ordinances about marking tanks and regulators and follow any rules applicable to your area.
n Have
an adequate supply of propane. Roads leading to your home might not be accessible for delivery, particularly after a snowstorm. Establish a regular delivery schedule with your propane retailer or call to schedule a delivery when the percentage gauge reads 30% to give the retailer enough time to make a delivery and ensure you have an adequate supply of propane.
n Talk
to your contractors. If you use a snow removal service, make sure the service knows the location of all propane equipment on the property. Instruct them to keep their equipment clear of all parts of your propane system, especially tanks, regulators and gas meters. If they shovel snow off your roof, instruct them to never shovel snow onto any part of the propane system and not to block any appliance air intakes or exhaust vents. It may be helpful to designate an area to pile snow safely away from any equipment.
TAKE ACTION n Keep
snow and ice from accumulating on propane equipment. Snow or ice accumulation can potentially cause parts of your propane system to crack or break, resulting in a gas leak. Gently brush away snow or ice that has accumulated around the tank, meter, regulator and any other piping by hand or using a broom. If you must
use a shovel, use extreme caution. If you notice any snow or ice buildup that cannot be removed easily, contact your propane retailer. Do not attempt to remove snow or ice by kicking or hitting equipment.
n Be
alert to snow buildup. Frequently check areas where snow or ice collect on your roof, structures or nearby trees and clear it if you believe it might fall on any part of your propane system. Heavy accumulations of snow or ice falling on tanks, regulators, meters, piping or valves may cause damage that could result in a gas leak. In high snowfall areas, drifting snow and ice sliding off roofs may require additional regulator and vent protection. If you think this may be an issue, contact your propane supplier for guidance on protection of these components.
n Keep
vents clear. Appliance air intake and exhaust vents and chimney flues must always be clear of snow or ice. Some homes may have direct vents, which are close to the ground. Improper venting can cause carbon monoxide buildup in your home, which could lead to serious illness or even death.
n Clear
driveways and pathways to propane tanks. Remember that a propane delivery truck needs at least a 10-foot-wide path to be able to deliver fuel to your home. Keep the tank area and a path to the tank free of snow. When plowing, snow-blowing or shoveling, do not push or pile snow around your tank, meter, regulator or piping.
