WHAT WOMEN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HEART ATTACKS SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK: Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest that lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath, with or without chest discomfort. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
WHAT WOMEN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SYMPTOMS As with men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain or discomfort. But it’s important to note that women are more likely to experience the following common symptoms: S hortness of breath – when you cannot get enough air for normal activities Back pain – sometimes along the bra line
Jaw pain – sometimes the pain will radiate to the neck or jaw Nausea – it may not be the flu & may be a precursor to a heart attack
FINAL THOUGHTS The key is to trust your intuition. If you aren’t feeling normal or are experiencing any of the above symptoms, head to your local emergency room. It is better to take care of yourself and prevent damage to your heart in the event you are having a heart attack.
For many years Women’s Lifestyle Magazine has supported Go Red For Women. I believe that now is the time for women to take control of their health by learning their family history and knowing their numbers. Beating heart disease and stroke means more time for women to be change makers, business leaders and innovators, and more time to be moms, sisters, partners and friends. - Darlene Mohr, Publisher, Women’s Lifestyle Magazine

F
or the last few months I’ve been privileged to do a LOT of traveling. I’ve been through some of the busiest airports in America: Las Vegas (LAS), Los Angles (LAX) Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Atlanta (ATL), Dallas (DFW) and Houston (IAH). While there I had more than a few minutes to “people watch” and reflect on what I was seeing. I was amazed at the multitude of travelers, many traveling alone but just as many traveling with friends or family. It boggles my mind how transient we are as human beings! While living our everyday life, most of us don’t have a clue how many people are on the move at all times. I enjoyed guessing what everyone’s motivation was. Who knows if I even came close, but it sure entertained me to guess. It also made me realize how little we know about the world around us and the other humans who share our planet. I found myself “opening” to the intriguing life stories all around me. And then it hit me…this was (for the most part) all about LOVE! Most of those around me were there because of love. They were quite possibly traveling to be with someone they loved, traveling with someone they loved or on their way to work because of someone they loved and needed to take care of. Wow…the possibilities that flashed in front of my brain cells were limitless. The power of LOVE had all these people on the move. It might even have been for the simple LOVE of travel. And so, as always, our February magazine is dedicated to LOVE. Love of family, friends, spouse, life and the community we LOVE to live in. LOVE of those we know and those we have not yet had the opportunity to meet. To each of you, we wish you the LOVE you deserve and a lifetime of loving others. We wish you an open heart filled to bursting with LOVE.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Darlene

I
n 2004, the American Heart Association (AHA) faced a challenge. Cardiovascular disease claimed the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women and medical professionals were not paying attention. In fact, many even dismissed it as an older man’s disease. There were many instances where women, especially younger women, were turned away from emergency departments because the staff believed they were too young to be experiencing the effects of heart disease or their symptoms didn’t fit the classic signs of heart disease. Still others were often thought of as too young to experience the symptoms of a stroke. To dispel the myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of women, the American Heart Association created GO RED FOR WOMEN, a program designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.
WHY DO GO RED FOR WOMEN AND OTHER RED DRESS CAMPAIGNS TARGET WOMEN EXCLUSIVELY INSTEAD OF MEN & WOMEN?
Historically, men have been the subjects of the research done to understand heart disease and stroke, which has been the basis for treatment guidelines and programs. This led to an oversimplified, distorted view of heart disease and risk, which has worked to the detriment of women. Because women have been largely ignored as a specific group, their awareness of their risk of this often-preventable disease has suffered. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their No. 1 killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. Women also spend a lot of time taking care of others in a household and not prioritizing their own health concerns. The Go Red For Women movement works to make sure women know they are at risk so they can take action to protect their health.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF GO RED FOR WOMEN?
Go Red For Women encourages awareness around the connection between women, heart disease, and stroke in order to save more lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power women have to band together in pursuit of collectively wiping out heart disease. It challenges them take action to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, for themselves and the generations to come. The heart and the brain are complicated organs; heart disease and stroke can and will take on many forms. Recently we asked many of the Southwest Michigan heroes who inspire us if they would gather for a photo in red and share their experiences.
THOSE FIGHTING CONGENITAL ISSUES
Congenital heart defects are structural problems with the heart present at birth. They result when a mishap occurs during heart development soon after conception and often before the mother is aware that she is pregnant. Defects range in severity from simple problems, such as “holes” between chambers of the heart, to very severe malformations, such as complete absence of one or more chambers or valves. Having a congenital heart defect can also increase your risk of developing certain medical conditions.

Let’s unite to prevent heart disease and stroke. It’s time to put our hearts into it and Go Red For Women®.
PEYTON KOLODZIECZYK
Peyton’s parents learned that Peyton had two congenital heart defects when she was only 24 hours old; pulmonary stenosis, a thickened heart valve, and a hole in her heart. “Her body is adapting on its own,” said her mother Brooke. “Hopefully if surgery is needed it will be less invasive and done with a balloon. Although we lived with the fear of the unknown in the first year, we know that new techniques are available to Peyton if needed. It won’t be a major surgery that would have been needed even 10 years ago.”
MELISSA JOHNSON
Sometimes congenital issues don’t make themselves known until adulthood. When Melissa Johnson was 37 she fainted at work and learned that she had been born with a defective heart valve. She delayed surgery at first, but later found she was breathless and her heart was racing even after walking one flight of stairs. Doctors replaced her valve, but it didn’t solve her issue and she underwent a second valve replacement in 2016. Melissa shares her story often and has even lobbied on behalf of the American Heart Association for CPR in Schools and for research funding at a national level.
THOSE WHO HAVE THE CLASSIC CARDIAC SIGNS
CAROL QUARTERMAINE
Ten years ago, Carol was in physical therapy while recovering from a broken scapula. Breathing became a little harder and she wondered if she might be coming down with pneumonia. Later, once home, she noticed that her chest discomfort was getting stronger. Her husband took her to her regular doctor where they did an EKG and a chest X-ray, and with results that alarmed the staff. At the hospital she met a cardiologist who determined that she needed surgery that night. At 10 p.m. they did a quadruple bypass. The surgery staff said they felt that her case was so urgent that she might not have lived if she had waited until morning before seeking help.
THOSE WHOSE SYMPTOMS ARE MISSED BECAUSE OF AGE OR OTHER CONDITIONS
CARRIE HOCH
In 2010, upon turning 40 years old, Carrie joined a gym and began running. After two years she was hooked. She lost 20 pounds and was running about 15 miles a week. In December, 2013, a MRI showed a stress fracture in her leg. To avoid surgery, she was told to keep weight off the leg and use crutches for 30 days. “One night I fell asleep on the couch for hours. I thought was coming down with the flu,” she said. It turns out, she had two blood clots which moved to both lungs and caused a double pulmonary embolism. Because of a lack of oxygen to her heart, she went into cardiac arrest the next morning. It took several Kalamazoo Public Safety officers and paramedics to save her life. A few days later in the hospital, she suffered two strokes. They left her with impaired vision and limited use of her left hand. A hematologist/oncologist said he’d seen something similar, and looked for cancer in her uterus. It turns out that the issues were related. A hysterectomy revealed there was no cancer. Finally, good news! Her vision improved every day, her headaches ceased and she is an avid runner once again. “I have to think - a hip fracture, a double pulmonary embolism, a cardiac arrest, two strokes, and a hysterectomy in 30 days - you can’t make that up.” said Carrie. Carrie shared her story at the 2015 Kalamazoo Go Red For Women Luncheon.
GEORGIA LEVENTIS-MOLINA To look at her, you would never think that this vibrant woman in her thirties is dealing with serious health issues. And yet, she’s survived a stroke & open-heart surgery.
“It started out as a back injury. The week prior I’d hurt my back but it led to a staph infection that attacked parts of my body internally,” said Georgia. “One morning I woke up and couldn’t see straight. My husband immediately took me to the hospital. They ran some tests and determined that I had a septic infection and it had attacked my heart. Some of the infection had gone into my vascular system and
WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com
caused the stroke.” She was in a medically-induced coma for about a week. During open-heart surgery, surgeons were able to place a band and a ring around her tricuspid valve, healing the damage and giving her hope of a normal life. “My desire is that more people learn the signs and symptoms of a stroke and know to treat it like an emergency. If Jody hadn’t taken me in right away and I’d waited another day, they say I might not have survived this,” said Georgia.
THOSE WHO HAVE A FAMILY HISTORY OF HEART DISEASE OR STROKE
ELEANOR HARRIS
Eleanor was used to having her heart checked and a recent EKG had revealed nothing out of the ordinary. While visiting a relative in the hospital, she read a brochure about heart attacks and she realized she was feeling tightness and discomfort in her chest. “There was tightness in my throat, too,” she said. “I noticed it just after I had lunch, so I thought it might be indigestion. It never occurred to me that it could be a heart condition.” A few days later while going up the stairs in her home, she felt the pain return, with more intensity. This time she called 911. After receiving two stents, she has made a great recovery. “I realized that, along with my son, other members in my family had heart issues. On my mother’s side, several relatives had passed away. My mother had had heart palpitations, and died en route to the hospital. My sister is in remission from a heart condition. There was definitely a genetic predisposition.”
HALEIGH HAYFORD
Haleigh is a high school student who hasn’t yet had a cardiac event, but she discovered that she had high cholesterol during a routine blood test. Haleigh controls her cholesterol by eating right, through medication and by living a healthy lifestyle. “Research and education being done right now by the American Heart Association means that there will continue to be new treatments and answers for me,” said Haleigh. In the American Heart Association’s 2017 Statistical update, about 20% of children have less than ideal cholesterol.
THOSE WHO HAVE COMPLICATED ISSUES
MARIA GAGNONMARKUCKI
Maria was getting her three young children ready for school when she developed a very rapid heart rate. It brought her to her knees and it was difficult to stand up. She was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation or afib, and began taking medication to control her symptoms. In July 2015, Maria began experiencing different symptoms. “It was a sharp pain that I’d never experienced, but I wouldn’t have suspected heart disease if I didn’t know that I had some afib,” said Maria. She was having a heart attack this time. “I’m the last person you would suspect as having heart disease since I worked out and did everything in moderation.”
CARRIE HAMILTON
Complete shock. Those are the words that Carrie uses to describe how she felt when she learned that she had suffered a heart attack. She had been explaining away her symptoms as they grew stronger. The initial one was pressure while she slept, but she would roll over and it would go away. And even after the pressure got stronger during dinner, she changed her shirt and her husband tidied up the kitchen before they drove to the hospital. She was young and healthy. There was little reason to suspect that she was having a heart attack. The medical team ran several tests and kept her overnight. By morning they determined that she had had a heart attack, but didn’t understand why.
THOSE WHOSE SYMPTOMS AREN’T TAKEN SERIOUSLY
BONITA BATES
Bonita had a double bypass at age 46. For at least 18 months prior to the bypass, she had gone into various places to have chest pain checked out. Sometimes the pain was so bad it had brought her to her knees, yet her lab numbers were okay. She had no family history in her immediate family and the medical community wasn’t yet in tune with women and their sometimes unique cardiac symptoms. Each time she was sent home. Then, after lunching with a friend who commented about how she didn’t look well, Bonita persisted with her medical team. This time the tests revealed that she had two main arteries blocked. At this point there was too much damage to insert stents and they performed the bypass surgery. “If I would have had an actual heart attack, my arteries were in such bad condition that it would have killed me,” said Bonita. She is very happy that the medical views of women and heart disease have evolved so that others might have better initial outcomes.
THOSE WHO NEED A NEW HEART
ELISE CAKE
When she became pregnant for the second time, Elise called her mother. “I remember that I was excited when she first called me after a doctor’s appointment and said that the babies were fine,” said her mother, Michele. “I replied with the question That answer would come months later as she sought ‘babies?’ as in two and she said ‘Keep going!’ Who out other opinions. While undergoing tests they knew there would be triplets?” But after the birth of the learned that she had a dangerous issue called sudden babies, Elise passed out and couldn’t maintain her blood coronary arterial dissection, or SCAD. It’s a condition pressure level. Although she was eventually released, that causes sudden tears in an artery & death can come she grew weaker and returned to the hospital. Sixty-four rapidly thereafter. Carrie found support after locating percent of women who die suddenly of coronary heart two other women with the same condition and began disease had no previous symptoms. Elise had developed volunteering with a group called WomenHeart and pregnancy-induced cardiomyopathy. Her heart was the American Heart Association. Since then, she’s unable to keep producing the amount of blood that Elise experienced another heart attack, a bypass, sudden cardiac arrest and an internal defibrillator. Her journey needed and they placed her on the transplant list in 2012 and she received her heart several months later. Elise is has been complicated and she wants others to know now able to fully parent her four daughters. “I have a that the change in her lifestyle is something that future as a wife, mother, daughter and friend,” she said. could happen to any woman. By telling her story and educating others to things like SCAD, Carrie hopes that she can help others.
SIGNS THAT YOU MAY BE HAVING A STROKE:
SPOT A STROKE
F.A.S.T.
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Sudden trouble seeing or blurred vision in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination Sudden severe headache with no known cause You should never wait more than five minutes to dial 9-1-1 if you experience any of the signs above. Remember, you could be having a stroke even if you’re not experiencing all of the symptoms. And remember to check the time. The responding emergency medical technician or ER nurse at the hospital will need to know when the first symptom occurred.

Cooking spray 1 medium onion, diced 1 medium fresh jalapeño, seeds and ribs discarded, chopped 1 tablespoon minced garlic 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 15.5-ounce cans no-salt-added
black beans, undrained 1 14.5-ounce can no-salt-added diced tomatoes, undrained 1 cup fat-free, low-sodium chicken broth 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
1. Lightly spray a large pot with cooking spray. 2. Cook the onion over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, or until very soft, stirring frequently. Stir in the jalapeño, garlic, and cumin. Cook for 1 minute. 3. Stir in the beans with liquid. Lightly mash them using a potato masher or fork. Stir in the tomatoes with liquid and broth. Reduce the heat to medium. Simmer, covered, for 15 minutes. 4. Serve the soup topped with the cilantro. Sodium Smart: Be sure to shop for no-salt-added or reduced-sodium canned beans (for all types) since there’s a big difference in the varieties. For example, a half-cup serving of regular canned black beans contains between 350 and 565 milligrams of sodium. By comparison, the same quantity in the reduced-sodium version has about 220 milligrams, and the no-salt-added version has even less, only 15 milligrams.

SWEAT THE STRESS
Away BY KELLY BROWN
Breaking a sweat causes you to produce oh, so pleasing endorphins, which help your body and mind relax.

This non-competitive martial art links flowing physical movements with breathing. Like yoga, there are many different styles and forms, making it ideal for just about anyone. Studies show that Tai Chi improves muscular strength, flexibility, immunity and can help relieve pain. Bonus is the peace and serenity you’ll feel after an hour long practice.
notification away, it’s no wonder why people walk around in a state of chronic stress. And, chances are, nobody needs to tell you working out helps relieve it. We are all stressed, especially this time of year (hello post-holiday funk!). There are many techniques to fighting stress, but exercise just might be the most beneficial way.
How does that work? Physical activity reduces cortisol levels (your body’s stress hormone). Breaking a sweat causes you to produce oh, so pleasing endorphins, which help your body and mind relax. This soothing hormone cocktail allows you to sleep better, think clearer, and improves your mood. If your body feels better, so will your mind. Sounds good to us!
While any exercise will naturally produce sweat, we’ve picked the seven best workouts that connect your mind and body.
Yoga
Yoga is popular for a reason: The mind-body practice brings together physical and mental disciplines to help you relax while increasing your physical strength and flexibility. Each pose in yoga takes a delicate strength and mental balance controlled by mindfulness and breathing. Yoga can help reduce stress while lowering your blood pressure and heart rate. Ending your practice with savasana helps you empty your mind and stay focused for the day.
Dancing
You don’t need a gym membership for this one — simply crank the tunes in your living room and let loose! Nothing makes you feel better than hearing your favorite music and letting your freak flag fly. Do The Hustle or Thriller or The Electric Slide—who cares! Dance is a great way to be creative and allows you to stretch your body in different ways than you would on a day-to-day basis. If you’re looking for more direction, try a Zumba class.
Running
Fresh air is good for the soul, period. Even in the middle of winter, stepping outside and taking a big inhale to let air flow through your lungs is exhilarating. Grab your trail shoes and head to the woods for a walk/ run combo.
Pilates
This fitness system is designed to strengthen muscles, improve posture and flexibility. Surprise – it also heightens mental awareness. Pilates is known to help
relieve both stress and anxiety. It releases tension in the muscles while using breathing techniques to provide more oxygen to the brain. Increased oxygen causes a feeling of calmness and well-being.
Kickboxing
This workout burns calories like crazy. Seeing your calorie count on your fitness watch skyrocket is satisfying. And, kickboxing helps maintain high metabolism. This blend of martial arts and boxing is a great workout. Plus, these moves will help with your self-defense. It reduces stress by teaching proper breathing techniques, building confidence and giving you an instant energy boost.
Heading Outdoors
Yes, we’ll say it again: Going outside helps you relax! The beauty of the world around you helps melt away stress. Take a (fat) bike ride, go for a run, hike a new trail, snow shoe or cross country ski. There are plenty of ways to adventure the great outdoors and West Michigan is the best place to do it!

PROTECT YOURSELF & LOVED ONES FROM Financial
Exploitation
BY SANDY K DERBY, ChFC, CASL, LUTCF | CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ | VP Old National Investments
Financial exploitation happens when someone
illegally or improperly uses another’s money, property, or other resources for their own benefit. This type of financial abuse could be committed by a total stranger, but many times is a known and trusted individual, such as a friend, caregiver or family member. Elder financial abuse occurs when the victim is 60 years or older, but can happen to anyone, at any age. Some types of financial abuse include: • Taking your money or property without your permission • Forging your signature on a check or loan or legal document • Deceiving, coercing or exerting undue influence to get you to sign a deed, will or power of attorney • Using your property or possessions without permission
Financial crimes can and do happen to anyone.
Financial exploitation crosses all social, education, and economic boundaries. We have seen even well-educated individuals lose their life savings. Some have given all their personal information to an individual claiming to be from a company they already know well. Some have been convinced to give a large sum of money to a person they met on the internet and have never seen in person. Criminals target those people they believe are the most vulnerable or have the most accessible money… • Seniors/retired adults • Physically impaired adults • Adults with cognitive issues • Grieving • Victims of domestic abuse
• •
Previous fraud victims Kind/good natured trusting people.
True Link Report on Elder Financial Abuse in 2015 reports that seniors lose $36.5
BILLION per year. That is 12 times more than what was previously reported. The problem is real, and unfortunately is an under reported crime. Several reasons include: Lack of awareness of what and how to report, self-blame, shame, embarrassment, denial, or fear of not being believed. When a family member or trusted friend is involved, sometimes loyalty, fear of retaliation, or fear of loss of independence may cause hesitation to report the abusive behavior.
Some Indicators of a scam: • • • • • •
High pressure is key! Sense of Urgency: Something dire will happen if you don’t address right now!!! Payment requested before any service is done. A non-local, unfamiliar company. Offers a special “deal” because they are in the neighborhood. They called you; you didn’t call them.
Remember these tips: • • • • • •
Be familiar with common fraud scams. Know who you are dealing with. Don’t send money to someone you don’t know and have not met personally. Don’t provide personal information to collect a prize or reward. Don’t agree to deposit or cash a check for someone & wire funds back. Wiring money is like sending cash. Consult with someone you trust (who will not

benefit) before making a large purchase or investment-don’t be pressured. Don’t let “specialists” pressure you. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. (There are no free lunches.) Trust your instincts and discuss with your bank or a trusted advisor who is not involved. Review account statements for unauthorized transactions and report immediately. Review credit report annually (www. annualcreditreport.com)
If this does happen to you, don’t be embarrassed or afraid to ask for help - There should be no shame in being a victim. Talk with your bank or trusted advisor. Report it to local law enforcement immediately. They will help you with the crime and refer you to resources. When you come forward, you help law enforcement prosecute and help prevent future crimes. If you receive persistent calls from fraudsters, consider changing your phone number or blocking them. Screen calls and answer only from those you trust. Put your phone number on the Do Not Call Registry 888-382-1222. These steps will help reduce your risk of abuse. If you are a victim, report it to your bank and law enforcement

HOW TO PREPARE FOR
Comfort. Elegance. Beauty. Your special day at the KIA.
Much of what we know about successful relationships comes from research by Dr. John Gottman. He and his associates at The Gottman Institute have been doing research on couples since the 1970s in a literal lab that they aptly call the “Love Lab.” What they have found is that there is not one perfect match for a person. Instead, there are about seven “perpetual issues” that will have no resolution in a relationship, although the specific issues vary based on the couple. This may be differences in religion, child rearing, or chore delegation. From this we learn that the focus is not on finding the perfect match, but on managing the conflicts that are bound to emerge in a relationship.
CHOOSE SOMEONE YOU CAN LIVE WITH
I do not mean to burst your romantic Hollywood-inspired bubble. But, put bluntly, this means that we have to find someone whose issues we can live with. Ask yourself questions like these: “What are deal-breakers for me? Would I rather have someone who does not pick up their socks or would I rather have someone who does not have the same political views as me?” The grass is not greener on the other side. It is greener where you water it. To insure that compatibility is possible, choose someone whose perpetual issues you can manage in relationship to your own needs.
GET CURIOUS
While working with couples in therapy I have noticed a trend: couples who are struggling tend to not ask each other big-picture questions of interest. Before the wedding it’s important to explore who each of you are as people. Here are some open-ended questions to get you started: “Where do you see yourself in five years? What are some of your dreams right now? How do you plan to handle the holidays with family? What are some things missing in your life?”

Get curious. Learn about each other. Successful partnerships are based on a solid foundation of friendship. Use questions like the ones above as a tool not only to better know your potential partner, but also to keep the love alive for years to come.
INCREASE YOUR RATIO
While there is no magic wand for a love that lasts (though wouldn’t that be nice?), The Gottman Institute has identified a magic ratio to successful relationships. In lasting relationships, there is a 5:1 ratio of positive to negative interactions. Positive actions may include a kiss on the cheek, a word of appreciation or a successful conflict resolution. If couples can maintain this ratio, they are better able to maintain a positive outlook on the relationship even during the tough times. Because they continuously deposit into the emotional bank account that is their relationship, they have funds from which to withdraw when things are falling behind. Therefore, they thrive.
PREPARE
Because marriage, in itself, is not what creates a lasting relationship, do not forget to invest in the relationship prior to tying the knot. Ask openended questions about your future & your dreams. Seek compromise and compatibility. Practice creating that 5:1 ratio now. Perhaps see a couples’ therapist to help create dialogue between you and your partner even before your nuptials. Remember, your relationship will give you a return on what you invest. So, invest wisely & invest often. W E D D I N G C AT E R I N G KALAMAZOO FOOD TRUCKS
When I got married in the mid-1990s, planning a wedding involved a fairly simple formula: get married in church and then hold your reception in a banquet hall. At least, that’s how most people did it. These days the sky (and the bride’s imagination and budget) is the limit. It’s not uncommon for weddings to take place in variety of unique places, including sculpture gardens, the beach and a rustic barn. As variety in wedding and reception venues has increased, couples have begun to discover that traditional catering options might be ill-suited to their needs. Whether they don’t fit the vibe, are impractical for the unusual settings or are prohibited by regulations, these catering companies simply won’t work. That’s where a surprising but brilliant option has emerged perfectly suited for this need: the food truck.
Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
Just like modern weddings themselves, food trucks have evolved into so much more than their predecessors that served greasy foods at county fairs across the nation. Certainly, you can still find food trucks that offer up the corn dogs, French fries and elephant ears of your youth. But you can also find gourmet options, thoughtfully prepared and delicious enough that guests at your nuptials won’t miss that buffet for one minute. Kalamazoo is blessed with a great variety of food trucks to choose from when planning your wedding. We spent some time researching the options to get you started in the search for the perfect food truck for your special day.
GORILLA GOURMET Gorilla Gourmet became Southwest Michigan’s first food truck when it began operating in the Kalamazoo area in 2010. They work closely with their wedding clients to prepare a personalized menu that caters to the couple’s individual preferences. Gorilla has been an active member of area Farmer’s Markets for six seasons and is committed to using fresh, local ingredients whenever possible.
Gorilla Gourmet’s owner and chef, Noel Corwin, has over 20 years cooking experience in high end restaurants from Nantucket to Napa Valley. Chef Noel enjoys working with clients on every detail from appetizers to desserts to beverage pairings. Check their Facebook page, contact them via email at n_corwin@hotmail.com or call 805-6362928 to discuss how Gorilla Gourmet can make your wedding an event to remember.
ROLLIN’ GELATO As traditions change, so often does a couple’s desire to have the giant white cake that typically graces the dessert table at a wedding. If cake isn’t your thing, you might consider serving your guests delicious gelato instead. Rollin’ Gelato, Inc. is an artisan gelato maker with a local spin. Husband and wife team John and Widad Mueller develop gelato flavors from scratch using local and seasonal ingredients. Additionally, your guests will love the nostalgia of being served their gelato from a vintage VW bus.
If you and your spouse to-be have a favorite flavor or you simply want to reflect a theme, Rollin’ Gelato can help you to develop a custom flavor that fits the bill. Go online at rollingelato.com to see a list of flavors and to learn a little more about the process and philosophy behind their gelato. You can also email John at john@ rollingelato.com or call (303)435-1859.

Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
PLANNING A BACHELORETTE BASH FOR THE AGES
T
he time has come and your favorite girl is getting married to the man of her dreams. She’s done you the great honor of asking you to be her Maid (or Matron) of Honor, so it’s up to you to make sure she has a bachelorette party she’ll remember fondly for years to come. You can, of course, go with the tried and true tradition of a limo, lots of alcohol and perhaps a scantily clad man or two. Who could blame you? This plan is a classic for good reasons.
However, there are many brides for whom this is not the right choice. Maybe she doesn’t like to drink much and the idea of a stripper makes her want to disappear. Perhaps she likes to spend as much time outdoors as possible. She could be an introvert who wants nothing more than some dedicated time to bond with the women she loves most. Whatever your friend’s personality and preferences, there are plenty of options to make her send-off into matrimony a memorable one. We went searching for some of the coolest ideas to get you started for your quest to throw your bride an amazing party.
SLUMBER PARTY
Life is full of moments of transition. Getting married can often make a woman feel like she’s leaving her childhood fully behind. Why not spend a night paying homage to the girl who lives in all of us? Rent her favorite movies, grab the junk food she loves but rarely indulges in and host a slumber party. Comfy jammies, a few rounds of truth or dare and giggling well into the morning hours will help her remember her past while looking forward to the future.
TEA PARTY
What could be better than warm beverages, sweet treats and good friends? Get out your grandmother’s old china, find some excellent local teas and coffee (try CHOCOLATEA or WATER STREET COFFEE) and hit up a local bakery for some delicious pastries for an afternoon full of conversation and memories. If you’re feeling motivated, Pinterest has some great food and décor ideas.
ROAD RALLY
BACHELORETTE BON VOYAGE
We’re lucky to live in the Great Lakes State so why not take advantage of all the water surrounding us and treat your bride-to-be to a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan? There are a number of options along the lakeshore. You can start your search with CAT’S MEOW CRUISES OF SOUTH HAVEN or STAR OF SAUGATUCK BOAT CRUISES.
If you’ve never done a road rally (basically a grownup scavenger hunt), you should seriously consider trying one for your party. What could be more fun that solving clues that take participants all over town before landing at your final destination? If you’re a DIY girl, a quick spin around Pinterest can yield some great ideas. Otherwise you can contact CLUVENTURE TRAVEL OF PORTAGE & they will do all the planning for you.
GAME NIGHT
While a night out on the town can be a blast, some brides would prefer to stay in and enjoy a night of games with her pals. If this is your friend, why not indulge her? Games to consider are Taboo, Charades, Poker or Twister. Apples to Apples (or Cards against Humanity for an edgier option), Werewolves: The Pact and Codenames are all games ideal for a larger crowd. You can even ask the guests to bring their favorite games (FANFARE on Westnedge has a great selection) as gifts for the bride to begin her own collection.
WINE AND CANVAS
What could be better than a little art and some nice wine with friends? These parties have gone from virtually unknown a handful of years ago to a favorite activity to do with friends and family. You can opt to invite a consultant into your home and provide the food and beverages yourself or reserve a spot in your favorite restaurant to keep the mess and preparations to a minimum.
MINDFULNESS RETREAT
Perhaps nothing in this world is more stressful than planning a wedding. Why not add some peace and tranquility to your friend’s life by planning some time away where mindfulness is the goal? Whether you do a weekend at a cabin or a night at your home or hotel, you can plan activities like yoga, meditation and journaling to bring calm into the bride’s life as she prepares for her big day. Hiking, sitting by the water or relaxing in a hot tub are all bonus options for an exceptional time.
28
ESCAPE ROOM CAMPING AND HIKING
If the bride is a fan of the great outdoors and the weather permits, why not plan a camping trip to celebrate her upcoming nuptials? Whether you choose tents or opt to rent (or borrow) a trailer, camping can be an excellent way to spend time together and grab some much-needed R&R. Go for a leisurely hike or take a quick swim before finishing of the day with s’mores and hot dogs over the fire.
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
Friends that escape together, stay together. There’s a reason that escape rooms seem to be popping up everywhere these days. There’s nothing quite like being locked into a themed room and working against the clock to decipher clues in order to escape and garner bragging rights about your brain power. Kalamazoo offers a number of options, including THE FINAL CLUE and ESCAPOLOGY) conveniently located near some great restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat and celebrate your success (or bemoan your failure).
Why not try something new and schedule a group class to try out tribal or pole dancing? These sensuous art forms are adaptable for women of all fitness levels and are perfect for celebrating the power and beauty of women’s friendships. Contact BOHEME TRIBAL BELLY DANCE or FLY FIT POLE FITNESS AND AERIAL STUDIO to see what they have available.

wedding day is filled with symbolic tradition, from varied religious customs to the neverending circle reflected in the rings and the types of flowers accentuating the celebration. Even with all the traditional rituals to consider, nearly every bride and groom can find ways to give their special day some unique touches that reflect their personality and love.
MUSIC SETS THE MOOD for every wedding, and it’s an
easy place to put your own spin on the celebration. Whether you forgo the traditional bridal march entirely or simply look for an arrangement that gives an updated twist to the classic version, let guests know this isn’t your average wedding by setting the festivities against a soundtrack that lets your true character shine.
PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN ESSENTIAL element of your
big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. Photos lend a personal touch, no matter what your color scheme or theme. Integrate photos of the two of you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some you’re honoring in memoriam). You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music.

Recipe Contest Winner KALAMAZOO DESSERT RECIPE CONTEST
W
hen the people at MacKenzies’ Café and Bakery decided to run a baking contest, they were hoping to find inspiration buried in the hearts and recipes boxes of Kalamazoo baking enthusiasts. They were not disappointed. The most exceptional thing about the contest, they discovered, is not the recipes themselves, but the history and sense of nostalgia that accompanied many of the submissions. Whether it was the favorite cookie recipe passed down from a woman’s late father or a recipe that had to be recreated based on observations because the instructions lived only in a dear grandmother’s memory, the fact that so many were willing to share their beloved treats with MacKenzies’ was deeply appreciated. When the staff of Women’s LifeStyle Magazine was asked to judge between the five final recipes, we figured that, though the job was tough, someone had to do it. With a sense of deep civic honor, we agreed to spend a morning sampling the delicious treats the staff at MacKenzies’ had prepared. The variety was impressive. Upon taking our seats we were presented with the following five desserts:
ITALIAN CREAM CAKE, KEY LIME PIE WITH MANGO MOUSSE, HUNGARIAN WALNUT STRUDEL, ITALIAN COOKIES and COFFEE TOFFEE BARS.

(269)343-8440 · mackenziesbakery.com All of the sweets we were offered were delicious, and to be frank, we found it hard to choose a winner.
THE ITALIAN CREAM CAKE had frosting that wasn’t too sweet, cake that was moist without being dense and had pecans to add texture. THE HUNGARIAN WALNUT STRUDEL had a great balance between the flaky crust and the moist, cinnamon-infused interior. THE ITALIAN COOKIES were slightly chewy with almond undertones and pine nuts on top. THE COFFEE TOFFEE BARS were chewy, with a rich taste that was the perfect blend of coffee and toffee flavors. The recipes were all so good that Mary MacKenzie said people should keep an eye out for many of them in the bakery cases in months to come. In the end, unable to choose them all, we came to a consensus that Jeanne De Liefde’s “AMAZING KEY
LIME PIE WITH COCONUT MACADAMIA CRUST, MANGO MOUSSE AND RASPBERRIES” was our
winner. We all agreed that the pie was delicious, refreshing and sweet without being cloying or overwhelming. One of our staff is a native Floridian and she was enthusiastic about this pie, noting that
the flavor was authentic and the pairing of the key lime with the mango mousse was perfect. The coconut macadamia crust only added to the feeling that you might find this dessert on the menu at any high-end restaurant in the South. This pie was a labor of love for Jeanne. She noted, “I went through many experiments before I came up with my version of the perfect key lime pie. I wanted a dessert that would be elegant, delicious and refreshing – and not too difficult to make. In this recipe, the richness and tartness of the key lime filling is perfectly balanced by a light, creamy mango mousse. Raspberries provide bursts of flavor, and the nutty crust adds depth and gives every bite a delicious crunch. This is my “go to” dessert for very special occasions.” As the winner of the contest, Jeanne De Liefde will receive a year of free desserts from MacKenzies’ Café & Bakery as well as having the honor of seeing her very own creation gracing the menu at the bakery soon. If you find that you simply cannot wait for MacKenzies’ to stock this delicious pie, we’ve included the recipe here so you can give it a try yourself. Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
Amazing Key Lime Pie
WITH COCONUT MACADAMIA CRUST, MANGO MOUSSE & RASPBERRIES Crust
Combine in a bowl: 1 ¼ cups graham cracker crumbs ½ cup flaked coconut 3-4 T. sugar ½ cup finely chopped macadamia nuts 1/3 cup melted butter or margarine Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix graham cracker crumbs, coconut, sugar and macadamia nuts. Mix in melted butter and firmly pat into bottom of a 9” or 10” spring form pan; Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
Key Lime Filling
Line the sides of the spring form pan (above the graham cracker crust) with a 2” strip of wax paper, using scotch tape to tape the two ends together. Make sure that the tape is on the side facing the pan NOT the pie filling. Combine in a bowl and mix with an electric mixer on low to medium speed: 7 egg yolks 2 cans sweetened condensed milk 1 cup key lime juice 2-3 drops green food coloring (optional – be careful not to use too much!)
Pour on top of prepared crust and place on the 2nd from the top shelf in a preheated 350 degree oven.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until filling bubbles slightly in center. Remove from oven and cool in refrigerator until completely cooled (1 ½ - 2 hours). Remove from spring form pan and, using a spatula under the crust, carefully slide the pie onto a serving dish. Remove the wax paper from the edge and keep refrigerated while you make the mango mousse.
Mango Mousse 2 ¼ 3 1½
ripe mangos cup sugar tsp gelatin cups whipping cream
Peel mango and cut into chunks. Puree in blender along with sugar until completely smooth.
Measure ¾ cup of the mango puree. Store remaining puree in refrigerator to use as garnish. Put ¼ cup of the mango puree into a small saucepan and stir in the gelatin. Heat over med-low heat, stirring constantly, until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Just before the puree boils, remove from heat and stir in the remaining mango puree. Cool to room temperature. Once the mango puree has cooled, whip the cream until peaks form.
Serves 10 evenly on top of the cooled key lime or spoon it into a pastry bag and create a decorative design on top of the key lime filling (as pictured below). Decorate with fresh raspberries and chill in the refrigerator for several hours, or until set (approx. 2 hours).
If you have leftover mango puree, drizzle it on top of the mango mousse as shown (It’s easiest to use a pastry bag to do this). * If desired, you can add a few drops of orange food coloring (or combination of yellow and red) to the mango mousse. Options For an even more amazing combination of flavors, serve pie slices with fresh raspberry sauce (recipe below). To serve, place a ladle of chilled raspberry sauce on each plate and top with slice of key lime pie. If you want to go all out, add a small scoop of mango sorbet and decorate with a mint leaf or two!
Raspberry Sauce
1 pint (16 oz.) frozen raspberries with sugar added Puree raspberries (with liquid) in blender until smooth; Strain to remove seeds.
Gently fold the mango puree into the whipped cream.* With a spatula, spread the mango mousse

Office Environment
MAKE PEOPLE WELCOME & WATCH THEM OPEN DOORS TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU
Y
our office environment paints a picture of your style for clients, your boss, colleagues and employees. How they interpret your office surroundings plays a role in how they perceive you professionally, which can affect your success. It’s important to consider what sort of image your office projects for yourself & your organization?
MAKE GUESTS FEEL AT HOME AT WORK
If you are going to have visitors in your office, make sure you have enough seating for everyone or request access to a nearby meeting room for scheduling meetings.
WORKING FROM HOME
If you work from home and expect you will have clients & potential clients visiting, consider how you will set up your home office space and the way in which visitors will access your workspace. If you feel that having visitors is too intrusive on your personal space, you might consider renting space in an office suite for hosting meetings. One sales agent I know rents an office space one day per week & schedules clients to meet her there on that day. You can also meet at your customer’s location or schedule lunch somewhere convenient for your guest.
A LITTLE PRIVACY, PLEASE
Be cognizant of meetings & conversations that require privacy & arrange for sufficient time without interruption as necessary. When you are conducting annual reviews, respect the employee being reviewed by securing a private area for the conversation.
SELF-EXPRESSION & SEASONAL DÉCOR
An eclectic space certainly has its place in many industries, but keep in mind that your office is representative of your reputation and services. If you work in a conservative industry, you might find that holiday lights aren’t appropriate year-round & décor might need to be a little more understated than you would otherwise prefer.
DINING IN
If you are eating and a visitor arrives, stop eating until they leave. If you schedule a working lunch in your office, be sure to provide ample space for eating and do not forget utensils and beverages. Enlisting an assistant to help with serving & clean-up can be helpful in keeping your meeting on track.
Consider the image you wish to portray to internal & external visitors alike. Your office tells a story that visitors will likely repeat. Welcome visitors with comfortable chairs & give them your full attention. Never let them wait uncomfortably while you make calls or prevent them from sitting because your visitor chairs are full of moving boxes and files.
OFFICE, SWEET OFFICE
Dressing your office is as important as dressing yourself for work. Taking the time to consider each of these suggestions & then thoughtfully appointing your office is important in establishing your work ethic & reputation. Setting up your office to be comfortable & welcoming while providing a space conducive to efficient & productive work is instrumental to your success. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS

TASTES FROM THE KITCHEN BY SARAH ANDERSON
ANNA’S HOUSE
T
heir mission is “to save the world from an ordinary breakfast” & this modern restaurant filled with eclectic nods to the past is serious about catering to the needs of each person walking through the door. Meet Anna’s House. “We like to make sure there is something for everyone and you can go and choose something very delicious and indulgent and not so health-focused, but you can also be on your cleanse or your diet and still find something that is very good for you,” explains Danea Mather, Vice President of Menu Development and Marketing of Anna’s House. Anna’s House celebrates everyone’s dietary preferences and is proud to offer options that are: gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, nut-free, glutenfree, paleo, vegetarian, vegan, organic, and locallysourced. “We have all of your breakfast classics, combos, pancakes, and french toast, but also a lot of trendy items, unique flavor combinations, interesting textures, and things that you just wouldn’t at all ever expect from a breakfast place!” exclaims Mather.
Mather shares her tips for at-home cooks who would like to step up their game: · It’s not as hard as it looks. · You don’t need a recipe for anything.
Starting as a server herself in 2014, Mather understands the value Anna’s House puts on excellent service. “We take a lot of pride in how our teammates actually feel and how they enjoy their job and that really shines through. We have a lot of guests who talk about how they can just see that everybody is happy all the time and that reflects in the guest experience.” Anna’s House strives to make sure the service experience they create is just as wonderful as the culinary experience. “Our servers are very knowledgeable, they are passionate about what they do, and they are invested in the brand. That element makes us a lot different, especially in breakfast where it is so fast-paced,” beams Mather. This month’s recipe, the Sweet Potato and Brussels Sprouts Hash, is a staple favorite on the menu enjoyed by meat eaters, veggie lovers, dieters, and indulgers alike. “The construction and seasoning are very simple, which allows the flavor and texture of the vegetables to shine and play together well,” Mather reveals. “What brings the dish together so well is the balsamic glaze! We get asked all the time what spice blend is used in this dish, but we really just sprinkle it with love and drizzle it with balsamic.”
· Follow the flavors & the textures. Start with what you’d like to accomplish for your meal like fats, protein, etc. then mix it up so there is a variety and that will always make it delicious and exciting even if it’s just what you have in the fridge.

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond This is a story of eight families who find themselves caught in the grips of homelessness. It takes place in Milwaukee, but could easily happen in any city in America. Poverty and economic deconstruction affect many more people than we often realize. What’s more, it can happen within the space of one paycheck or lost job. This is the 2018 Kalamazoo Community Read. Join the discussion this year and see the author when he comes to town on March 16th.
The First Kiss of Spring: An Eternity Springs by Emily March Contemporary romance novels can often seem formulaic, but who doesn’t love to curl up with a book that takes us on an adventure in the pursuit of true love. This series features Caitlin Timberlake who climbed the corporate ladder in New York City only to discover that home (and the loves she’s been searching for) really is in Eternity Springs.
