ell finally, spring is within reach. Certainly, in the midst of late January’s brutal cold snap that had the Governor declaring a state of emergency, we thought we night never again feel the warmth of the sun on our faces and the caress of a gentle spring breeze. The anticipation of daffodils and hyacinths popping through the soil is almost too much for me to stand. It’s once again time to sharpen our gardening tools, polish our golf clubs and check the strings on our tennis rackets. This month you’ll find some inspiration for all things spring. We loaded the pages with great ideas to help you get ready for this new season and put closure on winter. It’s our goal every month to bring you information about what’s hot and new in Southwest Michigan. We’re thrilled to announce that the Women’s LifeStyle of Greater Kalamazoo family is expanding to include some of our neighbors to the east and all the way west to the lakeshore. This widening of our circle means that we will be able to bring you even more exposure to the incredible businesses and restaurants that make our community so strong.
Wishing you a Sweet Spring! - Darlene

uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of the window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors. For those with green thumbs, images of tending to the garden and other aspects of their landscapes no doubt dominate such daydreams. Draw inspiration from those budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ these tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season. One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check

“The first real day of spring is like the first time a boy holds your hand. A flood of skin-tingling warmth consumes you, and everything shines with a fresh, colorful glow, making you forget that anything as cold and harsh as winter ever existed.” – Richelle E. Only you have the power to move your life forward.” – Oprah Winfrey “The spring wakes us, nurtures us and revitalizes us. How often does your spring come? inter is over, spring is here, & the long days of summer are on the horizon. With the step into spring, high school juniors and seniors are turning their attention to one of the most eagerly anticipated events of high school…PROM. The
Cinderella Project T
here are few nights in a teenager’s life that can compare with the glitz and glamour of Prom night. Sparkling lights, a date on her arm (or a posse of girls at her side) and an evening spent dancing the night away are all important parts of this quintessential American rite of passage. We all know, however, that it’s finding that perfect dress that dominates the thoughts and dreams of young ladies in the months leading up to the big night. For many, however, spending hundreds of dollars on a fabulous frock is simply not in the cards.
Believing that no young woman should miss such an important High School tradition, Memories Bridal partnered with The Junior League of Kalamazoo in 2006 to launch The Cinderella Project. They spend the year collecting donated dresses, shoes and accessories and make them available free of charge to area students who otherwise might not be able to afford to buy what they need for Prom night. Every year since then, the Cinderella Project has given away hundreds of dresses, ensuring that personal or financial hardships don’t rob girls of a magical evening. The Cinderella Project is made possible by the generosity of the local community. Every year people donate their gently-used special occasion apparel and accessories, doing their part to ensure that all the young ladies of the Kalamazoo area are given the opportunity to enjoy Prom. Founder Adrienne Wissner is profoundly grateful for the support the event continues to receive from the community. She wants to be sure that every girl finds the dress of her dreams and notes that the Cinderella Project especially needs plus-size donations to ensure that they have something to offer every girl, regardless of body type.

r Trends Flow eFOR 2019 BY JULIA HISEY
W
hat trends should you expect to see in floral for this year? Expect the unexpected. With our culture having a shift toward self-love, embracing personal uniqueness and finally becoming the true boss babe you are, the floral industry is, in its own floral way, following suit. The floral trends for 2019 are reinventive, sometimes a little offbeat and organic.
CONTAINER GAME
BOLD COLORS
One of the hottest trends for this year focuses on the container. The vase in which is used to display the beautiful floral is another outlet for expression. Think of it as the flowers itself are the stars of the show and the container as the well-set stage. Without a great set, actors acting may not shine as much; this is true for floral as well. The container can set a mood, style or even play into the occasion for which the flowers are being arranged. Don’t be afraid to get a little wild with this trend and express yourself!
Saturated hues are no stranger to the floral industry, but they are making a big splash on the 2019 scene. You will see these bold and vibrant colors come to life in the spring and summer months, when the most variety of flowers flourish. Bold colors embody happiness, making it the perfect trend to follow in 2019 for “just because” and “get well” occasions.
ORGANIC SHAPE
Nature is imperfect, and that’s what makes it perfect for the natural aesthetic that we will see a lot more of this year. This trend relies on the movement and flow of the stems itself. Some flowers have structure, like a rose, while some lack it, like celosia. Whatever that build may be for that flower, this trend respects it, highlights it and uses it to give character to the floral design.
GLOBALLY INSPIRED MIX AND MATCH
Nature has provided us with a plethora of colors, textures, scents and shapes within the floral realm. This year, you will see an abundance of mixing and matching these different elements in new ways. This plays into the overarching theme of reinventing and doing the unexpected. Though mixed elements are a fundamental aspect of all floral design, 2019’s trend is taking the traditional standards and norms and turning them upside down, or at least sideways.
According to International Floral Distributors (IFD), Mediterranean and French inspired designs will be most popular in 2019. Mediterranean influences lend to vibrant colors with rustic flair. Frenchinfluenced designs focus on delicate colors, typically of purpleor pink hues and play into the sense of romance.
Overall, the trends of 2019 are unexpected, playful and inspirational. Whether the arrangements are bold, organically driven, in a strong container, element focused or globally inspired, the floral trends this year are rockin individualism—and that is something worth celebrating. Spring (FASHION) Fever
While March marks the start of the spring season, in Michigan the month of March still includes cold winter weather. Most days are cold and dreary, and if we’re lucky some days are warm and bright. For those who are ready to transition
OUTERWEAR
Put away the outerwear you wore all winter, and get new gear. A new purse, coat, or jacket in a vibrant spring color is a great choice. If an intense color is not your style, fresh neutral colors like beige or light gray light and are refreshing as well. Many stores have special spring collections that launch this time of year. Do a little window shopping and browse store displays for spring color for inspiration.
MAKEUP
March 2019
SHOES
Replace your winter boots with flats. Available in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and designs, flats go with many different outfits and are very affordable. If you love a bargain, buy a few pairs of flats in different colors. As with outerwear, if a more daring shoe color is not your style, neutral colors like champagne, silver, and rose gold are nice alternatives to bold colors.
Change up your makeup routine! If you don’t normally wear blush, now is the time to add it to your look for spring. If you do, intensify your blush colors this season. Do the same for your lip colors. Spring blush and lip colors include peach, orange, hot pink, pale pink, lilac, and melon tones. For eyeshadows, fully explore and play with different warm and cool colors. To create colorful looks that aren’t uncomfortably bold, blend small amounts of brighter colors with neutral tones.
12
into warm, spring weather and spring fashion, there are ways to relieve your spring fever. You can build your spring style, stay warm, and not freeze on the cold days. Unleash your spring spirit by adding some color to your look.
ACCESSORIES
Shop for accessories like earrings, necklaces, bracelets, belts, and scarves in bright colors. A simple outfit with accessories in vivid colors will give your look a spring touch. Coordinating your accessories to match each other is also a ton of fun!
NAILS
If you don’t want to spend too much money this month but still want to get spring colors in your look, you can simply paint your nails in a spring color. Warm colors like red, orange, yellow, and pink are great for the spring season. Cool colors like green, blue, and lavender also work well for the spring season. LOOK WHO’S TALKING
Dr. Kate Antoniotti
K
ate Antoniotti is a self-admitted nerd who has always had a deep curiosity about the world around her. Early on in life, she thought this would lead her into a career in traditional medical. As she grew and learned more about the human body, however, she realized that her passions lay more in the direction of nutrition, exercise science, alternative medicine, and chiropractic. She subsequently earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Kinesiology at Miami University and received her Doctor of Chiropractic from Logan University. Today Kate and her husband, Steve, co-own Antoniotti Chiropractic and live in Kalamazoo with their two young children, Leo and Rose. Kate is a Woman’s Health Chiropractor who specializes in Prenatal Chiropractic. Her passion for women’s health and wellness only intensified when she and Steve were preparing to start their family. From the very start, she threw herself into preparing to become pregnant. She studied preconception health in an attempt to optimize her health, and therefore that of her children-to-be. Once she became pregnant she continued her deep-dive into learning everything she could about prenatal health and wellness, not only for her own children but for benefit of her clients as well.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OUR READERS?
If you find yourself in a challenging season of life, trust that you will find your way through it. Get curious, surround yourself with supportive and encouraging people, and gather as much information as you can. Because when you emerge from this season, you will have the tools and experience to be able to help guide other people through the same challenge.
Kate strongly believes that the world needs healthy mothers in order to have healthy children and communities. This conviction that has her waking up every morning eager to support the women in her community through their journey from preconception through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum season. As part of her efforts to help the women in her practice, Kate created MamaCore as a way to help moms heal their postpartum bodies. MamaCore is a movement class focused on giving women the tools to heal Diastasis Recti (DRA) and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. It is so much more than just an exercise class, however. It’s a place for women to connect during a season of life that can often feel lonely and isolating.
Kate is committed to learning everything she can to help pregnant women experience healthy, pain-free, and energized pregnancies. She notes that when she entered her own postpartum season, she experienced a diastasis and post-partum thyroiditis. These required her to dive into rehabilitation protocols for healing her core and functional medicine approaches for healing her thyroid. It was an incredibly challenging time for her, but one that she looks back upon with immense gratitude. She now has the privilege of using her own experiences to aid other women in their journeys toward healing. With a thriving business to run and two small children to care for, Kate admittedly doesn’t get much free time. When she does have a free moment, however, she loves to read, take walks with her family and listen to the occasional podcast. Unsurprisingly, Kate is an exercise enthusiast who likes to alternate between Yoga, Orange Theory and LBS Kalamazoo classes. What she really likes to do is sleep, but with an infant at home, that’s a past-time she currently doesn’t get to indulge in much. If she ever does get a full day to spend exactly as she pleases, you can expect her to sleep a full twelve hours, get a massage, do some yoga, spent some time outside with her family and enjoy some good food and wine.

Here’s a Thought…
ARE WOMEN OVER 50 INVISIBLE? A
50-year-old French author, not worth naming, recently remarked in a magazine that women older than fifty are invisible to him. “The body of a 25-year-old woman is extraordinary. The body of a woman of 50 is not extraordinary at all,” he is quoted as saying, showing his maturity level to be closer to a pubescent boy than his actual age. While the paper-thin insights of this one man aren’t worthy of rebuttal, the truth is, the belief that women 50+ lose their importance in life is shared by a disproportionate number of people in modern-day culture. A recent study revealed that more than two-thirds of women over the age of 45 have experienced a fallen lack of confidence— judged negatively, because of their age from the opposite sex, & by younger women. Technology also plays a role—with the perception of older women being out of sync with social media and the digital world, which is not at all true. But, perception is everything, and while the cliché is that men grow old in a dignified fashion, women just grow old. I look within and see anything but. On the local-front, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, at age 47, is just hitting her

stride. Other notable 50+ women in the workforce include WMU Athletic Director, Kathy Beauregard, Literary Enthusiasts Dean Hauck and Gloria Tiller, and Women’s LifeStyle of Greater Kalamazoo Publisher, Darlene Mohr. And there are countless other professionals, artists and creative souls finding their voice at an age that shouts from the rooftops, “I’m just getting started!” Let’s follow the lead of 71-year-old actress, Glenn Close, who upon winning her third Golden Globe this past month for her role in The Wife, delivered this impassioned acceptance speech, honoring her late mother.
The other day, as my grown son gazed at the DIY décor flowing throughout his parent’s living room, he looked at me and asked why I never displayed my artistic flair while he and his brother were still living at home—not comprehending the sacrifices a mother makes when given the choice of self-expression or simply keeping a home from imploding. But the truth is, we need to make time for ourselves at every phase in our lives. Women in particular are far too willing to sacrifice selfworth for the sake of loved ones, and it doesn’t have to be an either-or decision. My job is complemented with my writing exercises along with my goal of becoming a mediocre golfer. As a woman 50+, I’m looking forward to the second half of my own story.

How to Make Your Favorite Foods Healthier
H
ave you ever put on a little, eh, winter weight? You're not the only one. Research from the National Institutes of Health suggests American adults between the ages of 18 and 49 gain an average of one to two pounds every year. Grazing and overeating tends to increase when the weather cools down. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, in the fall, people tend to consume more calories, total fat and saturated fat. In the spring, we seem to prefer more carbohydrates. Additionally, depleted sunshine in winter coupled with people bundling up translates into less vitamin D being absorbed by the body, which some researchers believe is linked to weight gain. To keep your healthy eating plans from being thwarted by cravings for long-time favorite comfort foods when the temperature drops, make a few simple modifications.
Choose Crunchy
If you are prone to snacking, reach for noisy foods, such as apples, carrots or pretzels. Scientists say that when people listen to what they are chewing — called the “crunch effect” — they eat less of that item.

Go Lean
Lean chicken, turkey and pork can replace red meats in most recipes. Some traditional meat dishes, such as burgers, can be modified using vegetables (black bean burger, anyone?) Lean meats dry out quickly, so keep foods moist by watching cooking times. Most grocery markets now stock plant-based meats, a growing industry to meet public demand for healthy and sustainable protein options.
Stock up on Yogurt
Greek and other varieties of yogurt can replace sour cream and mayonnaise in many dishes. Look for types that contain lactobacillus acidophilus or probiotics.

A Little
Spring
in Your Step STARTING THE MORNING WITH MORE ENERGY & EASE
A
t this time of seasonal transition, selfcare is key. How can we align with the energy of Spring that supports us moving from Winter hibernation to Spring rejuvenation?
One way is to create a short morning routine. This can seem overwhelming when we’re busy, but carving out this time for yourself can free up head space and help you start the day with a little more pep in your step. It doesn’t have to be very long – a few minutes of mindfulness in the morning goes a long way to creating a positive energetic effect that can last throughout the day. Here are some tips to try:
Wake up before 6am – waking up early, and at the same time each day, helps us align with our natural circadian rhythm (internal clock) and supports better sleep at night. To wake up refreshed try going to bed by 10pm each night and limiting technology for the last hour of your day. You might also try no technology for the first hour in the morning so you can wake up and connect to what you want instead of being pulled into work or relationship before you’ve had a chance to check in with yourself. Go for a morning walk – exposure to the fresh air and rising sun helps signal your brain that it’s time to start the day. A brisk walk also has cardiovascular benefits, burns calories, improves circulation, increases mental focus, and is a good time to connect with yourself or a special someone. Bonus: if you have a dog they will love this part of your morning routine!
24
March 2019
Take a few deep breaths – you can do this from bed, during your walk, on a yoga mat, or in the shower. Noticing your breath helps bring you into the present moment. Slow, mindful breaths help improve oxygen delivery, lower blood pressure, release endorphins, relieve stress, and shift our energy. You might explore counting your breath, extending the exhale, or breathing through alternate nostrils as well as noticing your natural breathing rhythm. Best part about tip #3: it’s the perfect way to wake up and smell the coffee! Stretch and strengthen – stretching first thing in the morning increases blood flow to all parts of the body, including the brain, and has been linked to preventing feelings of tiredness and increased energy levels throughout the day. You might get out a yoga mat or find a comfy spot where you can move your spine through flexion, extension, side bending, and gentle twisting and then move on to gentle stretches of the neck, wrists, arms/ shoulders, hips/glutes, legs, ankles and feet. You could target a few spots that need your attention and hold the supported stretches for a few minutes each, or you could do a slow flow from head to toe. Adding a few moments of core engagement to improve balance and stability can be beneficial too. If you’re looking for more guidance and support, you might add a morning yoga or workout class to your routine a few days a week instead of doing this on your own, at home.
Don’t forget to eat breakfast – starting your day with the appropriate fuel is key to sustaining your energy, balancing blood sugar levels, and maintaining a healthy metabolism. You could try oatmeal, eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts, berries, or a protein shake to name a few. Experiment with foods you like and their effect on your system, or check with your doctor or an Ayurvedic practitioner for specific dietary recommendations.
Look ahead and map out your mornings according to your schedule. Maybe Monday and Wednesday you take a 30-minute walk, Tuesday and Thursday spend 15 minutes stretching at home, and Friday attend a class or give yourself the day off and just enjoy a few deep breaths before breakfast and your morning coffee. Incorporating even one of the above tips can help you feel more balanced. Here’s to stepping into spring with more energy and ease! Kristin Fiore is the owner of Down Dog Yoga Center in downtown Kalamazoo, MI. Her supportive approach to teaching Yoga, with a focus on trauma sensitive practices, encourages us to explore the present moment fully and inspires self-love, patience, and peace.

Restaurant Review MARTINI'S
832 S. Westnedge Ave| Kalamazoo, MI | (269) 388-8883 Hours: Tues – Sat (4pm – 11pm), Sun (2pm – 9pm)
M
y fiancé and I walked into Martini’s in downtown Kalamazoo just before 5:00pm on a chilly Saturday and were shocked to find a full restaurant. We hadn’t made a reservation but ended up being very lucky! We were led right back through the eclectic and buzzing restaurant to one of the last small tables in the bar area.
After being seated, we wanted to take a little extra time to go over the large menu full of pizza, pastas and other Italian fare, so we selected a half order of garlic bread as we studied the menu and made some decisions.
Our friendly server brought over a large basket (which we both said, “this is half?!”) of yummy looking GARLIC BREAD that was cut up into small pieces, and we placed our orders. I went with a pasta, the THREE
CHEESE CAVATAPPI WITH BRUSSEL SPROUTS AND SAGE, and when given a choice of MINESTRONE SOUP or salad, I
went with the Minestrone. He went with a SAUSAGE AND PEPPERONI PIZZA. The table next to us had one that looked yummy, and I assured him that I had loved their pizza on previous visits. As we waited for our food, we munched on the garlic bread with a delicious red sauce for dipping.
My Minestrone came out shortly after and it was awesome! Again, for a pre-meal soup it was a pretty large portion. It was hearty with vegetables and scarce on the pasta, just how I like it. Often with soups, I find vegetables to be mushy and overcooked, but Martini’s got it right here. The veggies were cooked perfectly.
Next came our entrees. My Cavatappi looked huge and wonderful. It was served in a large bowl with a tasty sage cream, mascarpone, Fontina and topped with beautiful Brussel sprouts. Pasta, cheese and Brussel sprouts? How can this go wrong?! It was rich and delicious, but honestly, was way too much food. I barely made a dent in my meal before pulling out the white flag and asking for a box. I will say though, I had munched on garlic

bread and had about half of my large bowl of soup before starting on my entree, so it makes sense that I was full. Also, is too much food really a problem?
My fiancé absolutely loved his pizza. He declared it to be in his top three pizza’s in the Kalamazoo area. I did try a piece and it was amazing. The sauce was a perfect, not too salty not too sweet, the cheese was drool worthy, but the crust was the real star. It was a perfect combination of fluffy and crisp. We both agreed that it would be worth the drive to pick up a pizza at Martini’s the next time we have a pizza night at home. So good.
For review purposes only, we decided we should probably order a dessert. You know…. just for content. Our nice server impressively went through all their desserts and she mentioned a CHEESECAKE in the roster. We have a real cheesecake problem, so of course went with that. We had it topped with chocolate and raspberry syrup and wow.
Half Order Garlic Bread
Three Cheese Cavatappi with Brussel Sprouts and Sage
It was amazing. It was a large serving, and even though we shared a piece, it was more than enough for the two of us. Sweet, fluffy with almost a cookie-like crust. Martini’s was great. It was incredibly busy, so it wasn’t super quiet, but it also wasn’t so loud that we had to strain to hear each other or talk more loudly than usual.
The service was great, and the food was delicious. It’s a good atmosphere that’s not too stuffy and a step above a bar. It’s comfortable and cute. It’s been in downtown Kalamazoo since 1988, and I can totally see why they continue to be successful! If you are looking for a fun night out and some great Italian food, Martini’s is where it’s at! ou know it’s important to invest in a business wardrobe, but clothing is only one part of your overall professional image. You also need to pay attention to accessories and other finishing steps. Here are five tips to ensure that your accessories work for you.
surprised by an earring that keeps falling off or a necklace that catches your hair.
Take a good look at yourself in the mirror before you leave each morning. Are your shoes clean and polished? Are your accessories simple and in balance with your clothing, leaving your face the focal point?
Jewelry finishes your look. Without jewelry you look underdressed (and underpaid!). Invest in classic jewelry that will stand the test of time, and each year add one or two more pieces. Consider starting your collection with a well-appointed watch and a pair of earrings that frame your face.
While all shoes make noise, notice if yours are unusually loud. This can distract those around you and will make you uncomfortable. The same goes for jewelry. You don’t want noisy bracelets creating distraction.
Classic shoes, as well as, bags or briefcases are good investments. Choose suede or leather (or manmade quality versions) in neutral colors for your bags and shoes and choose classic styles rather than the latest trends.
Accessories are a vital part of an effective professional wardrobe. Whatever your professional role, follow these ideas to feel confident and look fantastic. Nutrition &
Mental Health: The Essential Missing Link
DID YOU KNOW?: •• The “Minnesota Starvation Experiment” in the 1950s found that mental health symptoms (e.g. mania) can actually be created in healthy individuals when they are deprived of appropriate nutrients
•• Mental health symptoms like depression are starting to be understood as a disease of inflammation (Berk et al., 2013)
•• Those with certain diets (e.g. whole foods, minimally processed foods, sufficient healthy fats) have been shown to have lower rates of mood disorders and symptoms of anxiety
•• Even more-severe symptoms of mental health disorders, like psychosis, have been able to be reversed using nutrition (Kaplan & Rucklidge)
(For more information on these and even more amazing facts, check out The International Society of Nutritional Psychiatry Research’s website, www.isnpr.org.
If you are a nerd like me, THIS is fascinating! Sure, we may talk about the mind-body connection. We may acknowledge the importance of eating well and recognize that it is best to “eat healthy”. But, given the mixed messages we constantly get from various sources, including the healthcare industry, what exactly does it mean to “eat healthy”?
30
March 2019
And, how much does it really matter what we eat given that our stomachs and brains are so far apart? I am* not a doctor or a nutritionist. But, as a holistic psychotherapist who is a Certified Mental Health Integrated Medicine Provider, I see the power of the mind-body connection as it relates to nutrition frequently in my work. The power of nutrition on mental health is I think best illustrated by the recent tendency of the medical field to call the gut the “Second Brain”. We are finding that around 80-90% of serotonin (a feel-good chemical of the brain that helps stabilize mood and ward off symptoms like depression) actually is processed in the gut, as opposed to our brain. Even Dr. David Perlmutter documents in his book “Brain Maker” that depressive symptoms immediately appeared in research participants when their healthy gut biochemistry was compromised, even with no previous history of depression. There is not a clear line between the brain and the mind. So, even if there are disagreements about what is the “best” way to eat (e.g. vegan, Paleo, Keto, gluten-free), the healthiest
nutrition for our mental health should reflect the healthiest food profile for our brain and our gut. Given that our brain is 60% fat and each cell of our body is coated in a fatty membrane, this likely includes an optimal combination of the three macronutrients – fats, proteins, and carbohydrates – and a sufficient intake of micronutrients (i.e. vitamins and minerals). And, are we really getting those necessary elements from the pizza, chips, and fast food Americans tend to eat?
FOOD IS NOT JUST FOOD
Even if we know what is the “best” way to eat for our bodies, food is not just food. Authors like Nina Teicholz, Gary Taubes, and Julia Ross explain in detail how our fear of fat and our tendency to embrace sugar and processed foods is risky for our health, which includes our mental health. If you haven’t already heard (there was a great 60 Minute episode about this in 2012), sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Yep, you read that correctly! Furthermore, we are finding that the brains of those addicted to sugar and highly-processed carbohydrates
WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com
commonly found in our Western Diet (appropriately called the S.A.D. – Standard American Diet – by some) look the same during brain imaging as those addicted to drugs like heroin. As if that weren’t enough, research suggests that that dairy and highlyprocessed carbohydrate products actually function like opioids (e.g. Oxycontin, heroin) in the brain, triggering addiction to these ingredients. The especially bad news is that these products are in basically everything that is sold in a box or that has a nutrition label! So, it’s hard to avoid them unless we are being very intentional about it. We also know that food is not just food anymore because, if we give those who enjoy certain sweets a drug like Naloxone or Naltrexone, traditionally prescribed for people on opioids to help them no longer use drugs, those with a sweet-tooth no longer receive pleasure from eating that food. The drug is blocking the endorphins released during eating the guilty pleasure! This means that “eating right” is not just a matter of will power because, based on how addicted our brains are given the food we have been consuming, there is a reason why we simply cannot imagine living without cookies. As Gary Taubes argues in his book, “The Case Against Sugar”, we are now involving the brain more than ever when we eat, particularly with our S.A.D. nutrition. And, because the brain and the mind are inseparable, we need to remember to look carefully at how we are fueling our bodies and, therefore, our brains.
Greatly simplifying the biology, anytime we eat something, especially if it is sugary or highly processed, our glucose (“blood sugar”) increases. Unfortunately, what happens after a rise? A crash. This is when we feel “hangry”. Our moods cycle with our consumption of such foods. And, unfortunately, given that the same chemicals are present when our blood sugar crashes as they are when we have anxiety/a panic attack, they can precipitate each other. I frequently see people stop having panic attacks after they eliminate the foods (or beverages like coffee) that trigger their anxiety. Again, nutrition and mental health is not so separate.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
I am not suggesting that mental health is “cured” with nutrition. Because every body is different, I also cannot tell you what you need to eat. However, we certainly know that a well-fed brain and body is better able to withstand stress. Think about it: you may have the best sleep and exercise routine, but if your nutrition is horrible, how well are you going to feel? In the end, we cannot supplement- or exerciseaway bad nutrition.
THE POWER OF BLOOD SUGAR
You may be wondering why I am spending so much time talking about sugar. I think we greatly underestimate impact of blood sugar on mental health and our mood. Let me tell you what I see in my work.
KALAMAZOO • PORTAGE • BATTLE CREEK ST. JOSEPH • SOUTH HAVEN
You may be wondering where to start. Your own body of course! Remember to check in with yourself after or before you eat. Do you feel tired? Wired? Guilty? Sad? Sluggish? Anxious? All of those symptoms
are important messages about the connection between your nutrition and mental health. I would also encourage you to do research on what goes into your food and how it has been shown to affect our moods and bodies. The information is out there and knowledge is power. Given that we are not only what we eat, we are what we eat eats, remember that all of what we are ingesting (even if we cannot see it) affects us, especially our brains and, therefore, our mental health. Talk with your healthcare provider. See a nutritionist who understands the connection between nutrition and mental health. If you feel addicted to certain foods, find a therapist who can help you learn how to have a healthier relationship with food in order to help your mental health.

Any time you strap Sandy Bullock with a gun, we’re in. Throwing the ever-hilarious Melissa McCarthy in the buddy-cop mix (and a New Kid on the Block as a supporting character) makes this movie a winner.
A lot of us are nerds in almost every way. So a flick about a dork with flowers trying to find love is right up our alley. Plus, watching a giant, maneating plant do its work is never not funny. This movie has given us the gift of laughter and the gift of “Suddenly Seymour” as a karaoke option.
Girls’ Trip is exactly what it sounds like. A story of friendship, fiasco and fun in one of the most filmable cities in the US: New Orleans. And, it contains what one Funny Girl believes to be the single greatest piece of physical comedy: Tiffany Haddish demonstrating “grapefruiting.”
Heathers is as dark as comedies come. But the sociopathical commentary on high school cliques is something to which we can all relate. Winona Ryder is a revelation next to the crazy-eyed Christian Slater, and together they made the 80s immortal.
Written first by Rosalind Wiseman and adapted for film by our collective mother, Tina Fey, Mean Girls is the most quotable movie there is. It also gives a voice and a story to what would otherwise be vapid, one-dimensional characters. We laugh because we all see ourselves in that burn book.

Clue turns the classic murder mystery formula into a parade of witty oneliners, incredible character performances by Tim Curry and Madeline Kahn, and to top it off, it has multiple hilarious endings. It’s a true vintage treasure.
Never have so many of us felt so seen about our body hair woes. This crowded romp, written by Nia Vardalos, takes us on a journey of awkward love, embarrassing families and ultimately to self-acceptance. But like, in a funny way.
With Will Ferrell and Steve Carell, the laughs per minute are on point. Sure, the jokes are dumb, but we all deserve a brain break once in a while. Christina Applegate notches up the feminism in this boy-heavy film by fiercely climbing the news ranks and, uh, “domesticating” the great Ron Burgundy.
The 90s were the formative years for most Funny Girls, so this seminal film was a must. Casting aside the odd “step-brother love,” Clueless is an iconic teen comedy. If you don’t laugh along with Cher, Dion, Thai and their misfires and misunderstandings, you’re probably “a virgin who can’t drive.”
Bridesmaids
A movie about a wedding that doesn’t make a joke about the “unenthusiastic groom” is a breath of fresh air. It’s a wedding movie, but underneath it’s about powerful female friendships and women who are not afraid to be ugly. The spectrum of femininity is widely represented and none are greater than the others. Except Carol, who needs to get her life together.

A Woman’s Need for Financial Planning BY SANDY K DERBY, ChFC, CASL, LUTCF | VP Old National Investments
W
omen need proper exposure to financial education in order to provide a financially secure life for them and their families. Many studies over the years have focused on the differences between male and female investors.¹ Most of them have concluded that women are better investors, based primarily on their ending balances. Women tend to buy and hold longer, which is the primary reason for their better returns.
Women are also more likely to participate in their company retirement plans than men.2 However, single women whether divorced, widowed, or single by choice, do save a much greater portion of their income than do their married counterparts. I think it is due to a sense of needing to provide for themselves. Married women need to plan their financial futures with some consideration that they may be single at some time in their lives. Statistically, the average age of widowhood is 57, and divorce is still at least 50% in the US, and yet, 40% of married women are still not involved in the financial decision making process.
One in ten female retirees and one in five single women, over the age of 65, have annual incomes less than $10,000, which means they are living primarily on social security. There are a few factors that affect this. First, on average, women still earn less than men, however that is slowly changing. According to the 2006 US Census Bureau, 18% of wives out-earned their husbands, and many more females are starting to out-earn their male counterparts. But we are still behind in overall earning power, which effects how much we have to contribute to our 401ks. The second factor is that we live longer, and therefore, our money has to last on average 7 years longer. We also spend fewer years in the work force. We take time out for childcare when we are younger, and are more likely to leave the workforce in our later years to care for ailing parents. On average, a woman loses 11½ years of her working career, while a man may only lose 13 months. This has a dramatic affect on the amount of money you contribute to your retirement and to the amount contributed to social security. Many women who work for their spouses never take a paycheck, contribute
to social security, or establish a retirement account. If they become disabled, they don’t even qualify for SSI.
What if you develop a serious illness, get divorced, become widowed, or lose your job? How can you plan for all of these scenarios. Financial planning can be as simple as starting with a budget, or using a software program to help you get control of your expenses. Writing down your accumulation and debt reduction plans will help make them real, and will make them achievable. And you must have a filing system you can follow easily. Set a day every week to catch up on your bills and track your progress. If someone relies on your income, or you rely on someone else’s to maintain your home and lifestyle, GET LIFE INSURANCE!! Investing will build your future, but you need time to accumulate and grow your assets. No financial plan is valid without the foundation being protectedfirst. ¹FiLifeinpartnershipwiththeWallStreetJournal,TheMaleandFemaleInvestmentStyle,Feb2008 ² Employee Benefit Research Institute, Oct 2008

For example, Milgard offers a contemporary Trinsic Series sliding patio door with the maximum available viewable glass area and an optional narrow handle that blends seamlessly into the frame to lend a modern flair. HARDWARE
Even the smallest details matter when it comes to contemporary design. You may not need to replace or update your cabinetry, but you’ll most likely want to select hardware that fits a more modern motif. Avoid weathered and overly polished finishes in brass or nickel, and opt instead for selections like matte black, gold and copper, which are all well-suited for contemporary kitchens. Don’t be afraid to mix and match for a bit of an eclectic look, such as different pulls for the upper and lower cabinets or a unique style for drawers.
