s always, I am so thankful that spring is finally here. It feels so wonderful to open the windows and let all the warm spring air inside my space. Happily anticipating all the incredible activities that warmer weather makes possible, I can almost smell the burgers on the grill and hear the soft splash of my paddle as I kayak down the river! While we all get busy spring cleaning both our homes and our yards, I’m hopeful you will find a quiet moment to break away from all the work, grab our magazine (and maybe a cold beverage)…and simply enjoy

yourself. We’ve got some great warm weather ideas on the pages ahead and we know you’ll find several “somethings” of interest to read. In the coming months, we’ll all be busy with wonderful celebrations: Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Emancipation Day, graduations, weddings and more. Grilled Watermelon Margarita

1 cup of grilled watermelon, cut into small pieces 1 ounce tequila ½ ounce of simple syrup Juice of 2 limes Small slices of grilled watermelon, including the rind, for garnish Pre-heat your grill to medium-high.

Slice your watermelon into ½ inch thick pieces.

Lay your watermelon in a single layer on your grill until you get nice deep grill marks. Flip slices and grill the other side. Once both sides are grilled, emove from the grill.

Remove the rind and cut up 1 cup of your grilled watermelon. Save the rest of the slices for garnish.

Combine the watermelon cubes, tequila, simple syrup and lime juice in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour over ice (or put ice cubes in your blender in the previous step for a blended margarita version) and garnish with a basil leave and grilled watermelon slice. Alternative: Omit the tequila and substitute with limeade for a delicious non-alcoholic grilled mocktail version.

P

arenting, as they say, is not for the weak of heart. It has always been one of the most challenging (and most rewarding) jobs a human being can undertake. In the age of social media, it seems that the expectations are higher than ever. New parents are thrown into the deep end, sleep-deprived and insecure, only to find glossy images on Instagram and Facebook that tell them that life with a newborn should be an unending parade of sweet snuggles in a home that is neat and tidy. Lisa Garnett knows better. Not only is she the mother of three grown children, she is an experienced Professional Nanny and Newborn Care Specialist. She currently works full-time as a nanny for an infant, as well as doing overnight newborn care. Her job is to help parents navigate the challenges facing families these days.

“As a new parent, your whole world is turned upside down. Things rarely go exactly as planned. I think society expects you to be perfect, relaxed and comfortable from the time you find you’re pregnant. These things are unrealistic.” Lisa says that she knew from a young age that she wanted to work with kids and babies. She started babysitting in the summers at the tender age of 11 and moved on to working in daycare centers during High School. When she decided that she preferred to work in more intimate, one-on-one environments, she headed to Denver to attend the Nanny School.

The Power of Mother/Daughter Relationships

This month we get to celebrate Mother’s Day. What a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the one who gave us life! I challenge you, however, to not only reflect on your love for your mother, but to communicate it!

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

For some of us, our mothers are living and we are close to them. For others, our mothers are living but are far away, whether emotionally or geographically. For others still, we do not know our mothers or they have passed on. Regardless of your situation, I challenge you to consider during this month what exactly it means to be a “mother.” Your mother may have given birth to you. But, you also may have had a “mother” who was a teacher who encouraged you to follow your dreams. Your partner’s mother may offer you more unconditional love than your own biological mother has ever been able to. Perhaps you are not able to have the children you desperately want to have and can strive to be the “mother” that your lonely neighborhood kid needs.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE STRUGGLING

In my work as a psychotherapist, I have found that the mother/daughter relationship can be the strongest, most stable bond that gets a person through the hardest time of their life. But, it can also be one of the most naturally tumultuous relationships, depending on the circumstances. Sometimes the tension can be because we are so similar to our mothers –whether we care to admit it or not! Sometimes it is because we are so different. Whatever the reason for your love, or even if the thought of the relationship is burdened by hurts, for this month, practice finding one kernel of beauty in the relationship & speak it. If you can, speak it out loud to your mother, practicing your willingness to show appreciation for all that your mother has offered in your life. (Think about all of those late nights and dirty diapers!) If your mother is no longer living, speak it to

yourself in honor of her. If there is tension, see if there is one tiny area where you have gratitude, even if it is the stunning nose you inherited from her. It is not enough to just have people in our lives. Practice communicating your appreciation for them. Say “I love you,” “Thanks for all you have done for me,” just because. Share a special memory. Create a special monthly mother/daughter day. Use this month to not only honor the mother/ daughter relationship, but to engage in it and savor it. A Mother’s Love BY ERICA SHIER

T

hink for a moment of every mother you’ve had the privilege to know in your life. Whether it’s the one who gave birth to you, the ones walking along side you as you move through life or the ones that paved the way, chances are that each of these unique women inhabits the role in a way all her own. For every woman who decides when and how she wants to have a family and executes that plan flawlessly, there are many women who have a very different story tell. Some women find themselves pregnant and facing motherhood in a time not of their choosing, with unexpected decisions looming before them. Other women find themselves struggling with infertility and have to make difficult choices about how to create the family they desperately desire. No path is the “right” one and the routes taken to motherhood do not make on woman more of a mother than any other.

This month we have the privilege to introduce you to two incredible women who came to the title of “Mom” in their own unique ways. Their paths, lives and approaches may different but their fierce love and dedication to their families are very much the same. 10

KATE MOORE’S journey to motherhood

began with a delightful surprise. She and her husband, Adam, had been married for three years and had not even begun to discuss when to start the family they both wanted when Kate discovered she was pregnant. Henry was such a sweet, happy baby that they soon decided to try for another baby. They expected it to be simple. After all, Henry had come to them so easily. Unfortunately, Kate and Adam encountered something that many couples experience but few know about until it happens to them; secondary infertility. After years had passed and no sibling appeared for Henry, the couple began to discuss adoption. It was something they had always wanted to do, but planned to pursue once their biological children were teenagers. Now, though, adoption might be their only choice for growing their family. Research into the process was disheartening for the couple, as they realized that private, domestic adoption would be prohibitively expensive. When they were informed that they could adopt for free from the foster care system, they initially balked. They feared the pain and trauma involved in bonding with a child, only to face the threat of having to return him or her to the biological family (especially if that family was unsafe). They weren’t sure if they wanted to expose themselves and Henry to the risk of such pain.

They let the idea of fostering rest for a couple of years, only to discover that they both experienced a change of heart at the same time. They deeply believe that God changed their minds and readied their hearts for fostering and moved ahead with the process in 2012. Kate took a leave from her full-time position as HR Director for a local company, so that she could be closer to home as they navigated this new family landscape. The couple fostered for three years, with kids coming and going during that period. Every case was difficult and painful, but one in particular was so traumatic and ended so badly that Kate wondered if she could ever foster again. Before long, though, she determined that good foster care will always be heartbreaking; that the depth of the heartache reflected the depth of the love. She ultimately decided that the love she could show and the difference she could make in the lives of these children was worth the pain. Shortly after this time, Kate and Adam decided to try fertility treatments. After three unsuccessful IUI attempts, and weathering the financial and emotional toll they brought, Kate felt desperate. In a moment of deep grief, she poured her heart out before God, holding nothing back. As she worked through her emotions, she arrived at a place of relative peace and deep trust in God. She asked, very simply and sincerely, that he send her a son.

She later discovered that Adam had uttered that very same prayer, that exact day. The next day the couple’s foster care agency called to see if they would take in a four day old newborn baby boy. Both instantly believed that God had answered their prayers. That sweet little baby is now their four year old son. A year having Evan join their family, they had the opportunity to welcome his biological baby brother, Isaiah, into their home. The road to their adoptions was rocky and painful; Kate doesn’t deny or gloss over this fact. “Being a mom has been a rollercoaster of pain and joy for me. I have learned so much about love, hope, strength and trust through the process. The valleys I’ve walked through as a mother have made me realize that no mountain-top should ever be taken for granted.” Kate, Adam and the boys live in Southwest Michigan with their rescue dog, Marley. Kate has recently returned to work full time in Human Resources, supporting the HR and Talent Development departments of a local credit union. She loves being a mother and especially relishes the moments of discovery and connection that occur when she gets to experience the things that most bring them joy. She notes. “There’s a subtle-but-worldchanging difference between when your kids are enjoying something and when they’re enjoying something because you are part of it. Those are moments I love most - and the hugs, snuggles and words of gratitude that come out of those moments are treasures.” •

a little one. In February of 2013, the couple welcomed a bouncing baby boy they named Kael. A brother, named Jack, followed in May of 2015 and the arrival of a little girl named Ryleigh in March of last year made them into a family of five. When Amelia was pregnant with Ryleigh, they discovered she would be born with a Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate. Upon her birth, she was also diagnosed with Metopic Craniosynostosis (a premature fusion of an infant’s cranium). Both of Ryleigh’s diagnoses required surgical intervention and the follow-up care required have posed some challenges to the family. Amelia is grateful that, as a stay-at-home Mom, she has increased flexibility for doctor’s appointments and other logistical concerns. She is also incredibly thankful to live in a state that offers both access to doctors who specialize in cranial reconstruction and Children’s Special Healthcare (a fund that helps to cover the costs associated with the medical care required). Amelia is so inspired by her little girl. In her first year of life, little Ryleigh faced more medical challenges than most people go through in a lifetime, but she bounces back each and every time. She has an indomitable spirit and a sweet smile for everyone she meets. It’s Amelia’s greatest wish that every child, no matter where they live in the world or whether their parents can afford it, would have access to the medical care they need. That’s why organizations like Operation Smile,

Cranio Care Bears and Cuddles for Clefts are near and dear to her heart. Amelia relishes her life as a mother and loves that she gets to be home with her children. She especially appreciates the time it gives her to share the things she loves with them. For example, she is passionate about science and takes every opportunity to share that interest with her children. Watching them learn and discover as they make volcanoes or play with slime is deeply satisfying for her. While she wouldn’t trade her time at home, Amelia does admit that the monotony and repetition of life as a stay-at-home mother can begin to wear on her. She is careful to find time for herself, whether that means spending some time outdoors or taking a leisurely stroll down the aisle of a bookstore, looking for her next read. Reading is Amelia’s very favorite way to relax and she indulges whenever she can. She read 216 books last year alone and if she gets to finish an entire cup of coffee before it grows cold while she is reading one, she is truly content. • Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.

AMELIA LAMBRIGHT was pretty sure

she didn’t want a family of her own. Until she was 26, she was determined to dedicate herself to a career, eschewing the role of mother. In 2009, Amelia became an aunt for the first time and the love she felt for her niece, Zoey, made her think that maybe she did want to have children of her own. When she and her husband Kyle decided to start a family, they expected things to move quickly. Instead, they (like so many other couples) ran into the roadblock that is infertility. When they were not pregnant a year after they began their quest to have a baby, the couple sought out a fertility specialist to begin some testing. Another year passed and Amelia and Kyle were preparing to begin fertility treatments when they discovered, to their shock and joy, that they were expecting KALAMAZOO • PORTAGE • BATTLE CREEK ST. Coping With

Mother’s Day When You Don’t

Fit the Mold BY EMILY BETROS

Whether you are a mom, have a mom, or fall somewhere in between, Mother’s Day can bring up many different emotions. Some of us dream of becoming a mom one day and won’t be able to. Some of us have lost our mom too soon. And, let's face it, some of us just don’t have a great relationship with the person who brought us into this world. Regardless of the category you fall into, if you find yourself struggling this Mother’s Day, consider these tips to help get you through the day:

DISCONNECT FROM SOCIAL MEDIA Your feed is bound to be filled with all things “mom” and there’s no reason to fill your brain with these images, quotes, and tributes. If you are already feeling sad or lonely, seeing other people's joy and celebrations won’t help. Show yourself some compassion and log off for the day.

DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF

If you already know that this day is going to be emotionally draining and challenging for you, schedule something to fill your cup.

Hang out with a friend, work on a project, get a massage or anything else that will put a smile on your face. You deserve a little love everyday, and this day is no different.

HAVE SELF-COMPASSION

If you’ve struggled with infertility, miscarriage(s), or have an estranged relationship with your mom know that you are not alone and your feelings are completely normal on this day. Acknowledge that this day is tough for you. Feel your feelings. Write them down or talk to a friend. You don’t have to hide your feelings. Tell yourself that it’s OK to be sad. Be kind to yourself just like you would a young child. Once you have notices and acknowledged how you are feeling, see if there is anything you can let go.

CELEBRATE YOURSELF

Wherever you are in this journey, know that there are a million others amazing things that make you who you are. Yes, being a mom or having a mom is a special role and relationship that some of us get to experience. But, this is only one day of the year. You are

an incredible person! Honor where you are at in your life right now. Love yourself.

CREATE A NEW TRADITION

Mother’s Day isn’t likely to fall of our calendars anytime soon. Consider starting your own tradition on this day to make it your own. Maybe you recount memories, do something to honor someone else, find a way to give back to the community, head to Lake Michigan, or buy a new book. Whatever you decide, make sure it’s something you’ll look forward to year after year. It’s important on this day to treat ourselves with unconditional love, acceptance, and compassion. Cafe 36 is a hidden gem located inside Sawall Health Food store. A couple years ago the store expanded and added a second story to hold the restaurant. The first time I visited, I was hesitant. A fine dining restaurant inside a grocery store?! But I’m telling you, it’s super cute up there and once you sit and get things going, you kind of forget that. Also, Sawall is great. It’s not loud or chaotic so even if you do recognize that you are in a grocery store, it’s not bothersome. After being seated, I quickly realized that the staff was amazing. They were incredibly attentive and super professional. It’s clear that they are very well trained and accustomed to meeting a high standard of customer service.

We decided to order several starters and share. We went with the SHRIMP STICKS and the FRIED CAULIFLOWER. I LOVED the shrimp sticks! They were crunchy and delicious and had a caramelized black honey dipping sauce that was divine. The Fried Cauliflower was great as well. It was incredibly flavorful and cooked perfectly. It wasn’t deep fried, so it didn’t have a heavy batter to it. It was just perfect. We all also loved the bread that was brought to the table, cut in little triangles and had rosemary in it. I had a hard time deciding what to order for my entree. Everything sounded delicious! I ended up going with the CHICKEN POT PIE . And OH.MY.GOODNESS.

The server set down my plate and I thought that it looked good but kind of bleak. It appeared to be just vegetables and some chicken, BUT THEN he poured the veloute over the mixture. AND THEN he laid a beautiful flaky puff pastry on top of it. AND THEN he poured more of the veloute on top of that. I was SO excited. Not only did it look delicious, but I LOVED the presentation of it all. It really helps the meal

be more enjoyable too, as the puff pastry gets soggy quickly, so it makes more sense to add the liquid just before it is served.

And by the way, it tasted AMAZING! The veloute was rich & flavorful, and the chicken was moist & cut in smaller pieces, so it was very easy to eat. The puff pastry was amazing. I don’t like a traditional pot pie crust because usually they are so dry, so the puff pastry is where it’s at!

One of my friends got the FRIED TOFU. She said it was really good but would have liked a starch like a rice served with it. It came over a bed of sautéed vegetables. The lack of a rice was the only complaint! She said otherwise it was really good!

Another friend got the BACON ON A BONE . We all kind of laughed when they set it down in front of her because it was HUGE! We knew there was no way she would make a dent in that, let alone finish it! It looked very pretty, and she said it was really good.

To finish, we ordered several desserts. We tried the CRÈME BRULE , the CHOCOLATE SOUFFLÉ, and my favorite, the POTS DE CRÈME . It was great sharing because we got to try a little bit of each! Cafe 36 was amazing. The atmosphere is cute and modern. Despite it being inside a grocery store, it’s not loud at all.

They do a great job in both content and quality of their food. Everyone was able to find something they loved. I would say this is definitely some of the best food I’ve had in Kalamazoo. I’m hoping to get back soon, maybe for their Sunday Brunch! It would be a fantastic place to take my Mom for Mother’s Day.

Jackson Chenery: Walking in nature with my dog is my happy spot, but it has to be warm and comfortable—68 to 82° with a light breeze.

Shaw: I’ve enjoyed the winter colors at Chipman Preserve in Comstock. Besides discovering unique barks like the spiked Honey Locust Tree, other displays of multi-colored berries and textured fungi are delightful to spot. Dead logs give way to deep green moss, while some feisty ferns pop out through the snow. It’s nature at its best. Worthington: The beach is my refuge and ultimate happy place. I love the Florida Golf Coast—St. Pete and Fort Myers Beach. Closer to home, my most creative ideas are developed in the shower.

What are you binge watching right now?

Jackson Chenery: I love to learn, but hate school. Ted Talks and YouTube videos have replaced television. I have a short attention span, but I am very curious.

Shaw: I enjoyed sitting near the front row of Miller Auditorium to watch and hear jazz tenor saxophonist, Branford Marcellus, years back. His brother played the drums while his father, Ellis, played the piano. Worthington: Billy Joel at Madison Square Gardens. Best part being there with my husband who LOVES Billy Joel.

Shaw: This is Us, on NBC, has caught my fancy. One random item on your bucket list? Each episode manages to tug at my heartstrings as Jackson Chenery: I would love to spend a day a young couple raises their two surviving triplets with Mick Jagger or Richard Branson.

Shaw: I’d like to try skiing someday. I’ve always been mildly athletic, but grew up in the flat plains of Saginaw valley. Fire It Up With winter in the rearview mirror, it’s time to dust off the grill and enjoy cooking in the great outdoors.

Heather Dombos comes from a long, southern tradition of hospitality and hearty cooking. You can usually find her in the kitchen whipping up something special for family and friends.

GRILLED CUBAN CHICKEN THIGHS 4 pounds chicken thighs

Marinade: 1 orange (juiced and zested)

3 limes (juiced and zested)

¼ cup fresh oregano, loosely packed 1 cup fresh cilantro, loosely packed 6 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped

¼ cup olive oil

1 tsp red pepper flakes

1 tsp salt

1 Tbsp dried cumin

Combine all the marinade ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

Place chicken thighs in a large bowl and pour on the marinade. Ensure that you cover the chicken completely. Marinate for at least 1 hour, but you can marinate up to 24 hours. The longer, the better. Heat grill to medium.

Place chicken thighs on grill, cover and cook for 30 – 45 minutes, until thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh reads 165 degrees. Remove from grill, wrap in foil and let rest for 10 – 20 minutes.

GRILLED PINEAPPLE WITH BROWN SUGAR GLAZE

GARLIC PARMESAN VEGETABLE SKEWERS

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 stick butter, melted

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp vanilla

Place slices on grill for about 2 minutes, until grill marks form.

Rotate each slice 90 degrees and allow to cook 2 more minutes.

1/2 cup olive oil 1/8 cup Weber’s garlic parmesan seasoning 12 thick wooden skewers or metal skewers

Preheat grill to medium-low heat (around 325 degrees).

Cut corn into 1 ½ inch rounds. Cut zucchini into 1 inch rounds. Cut the bell pepper and onion into 1 ½ inch square pieces. If you don’t have mini red potatoes, cube red potatoes into 1 ½ inch pieces. Work the vegetables onto the skewers.

Mix olive oil and garlic parmesan seasoning in a small bowl and set aside. Grill for 15 minutes, dry (rotating skewers every 3 minutes). Brush with the olive mixture and grill for an additional 5 minutes.

In the morning we start the process all over again. Getting dressed is an ordinary thing and it is an extraordinary thing.�

Follow these five tips to complete this necessary daily process with ease:

Schedule time to do just that. Plan ahead by giving yourself the luxury of 10, 30, or 60 minutes, on the front end of your week, to plan your wardrobe.

Necessary changes. Make any changes now, while you have time, or re-think a change in garments to create your looks for the week.

Consider your activities and dress goals for the upcoming week. Know the level and type of garments you need for the week. Do you need professional looks for five days this week, or a combination of three professional and two smart casual ensembles? Next, what is taking place in your evening and weekend activities? Will you need separate outfits for these activities and outings?

Make sure the garments are ready for wear. Once your garments/outfits are selected, check them for stains and any minor repairs that, if let go, would spoil your look and stress you out as you attempt to make it out the door on the day of wear.

Complete your look. Select accessories, shoes, tote/handbag, and any special need in foundation wear, and as you did with your garments, confirm that these items are in good repair and ready to finish your look.

A simple plan, allowing time for yourself, and knowing your dress needs for the week will allow you to not only feel confident with ease, but look great. 22

Teach Good Money Values BY SANDY K DERBY, ChFC, CASL, LUTCF | VP Old National Investments

A

re you making money decisions based on personal values? If not, you are probably not teaching your children to do so, either.

In The Financially Intelligent Parent, 8 Steps to Raising Successful, Generous, Responsible Children, authors Eileen and Jon Gallo examine how parents can create an internal structure of values for both themselves and their children that allow them to use money in healthy ways.

According to the Gallos, giving your kids a money value vocabulary is important. This means having the words to make financial decisions based on values. For example, if children are trying to decide whether to spend their entire allowance on video games like their friends do, a money values vocabulary can help them resist peer-group pressure. They can say to themselves, "I believe in saving at least some of my money for more important things in the future, so it doesn't make sense to spend all of it each week on these games." Teaching kids this vocabulary isn't as difficult as it seems. The problem is that parents keep their values in their hearts rather than articulating them consistently. The book lists

eight money behaviors of financially intelligent parents. Here are a few that will get you started.

Become a charitable family. Teach your children that they can do more with their money than spend it on themselves, and encourage them to be more compassionate and caring. By participating as a family, you help your children learn empathy and responsibility toward others. Your children will realize they have the power to make life better for others. In a recent copy of “Grandparent” magazine I saw an ad for a child’s bank that has three compartments labeled “Save” “Spend” “Give”. I thought it was wonderful. Encourage a work ethic. A good work ethic is a learned behavior, and parents are the best models for their kids. Jon Gallo cites a Harvard University study that shows developing the capacity to work, or a work ethic, between 6 and 12 years old is the single biggest predictor of adult mental health. So how do you develop a work ethic for your children? Jon Gallo cites three major ways.

First is through family chores. However, chores and allowances should not be tied together, he

advises. Kids should not develop an expectation to be paid to do things that they ought to do as a member of the family.

Second, encourage them to "do their best" as opposed to "be the best" when it comes to school work and extracurricular activities. If involved in athletic activities, they have to go to practice, show up on time, and be disciplined – all of which are part of developing a work ethic. Third, as kids get older, they can get parttime jobs. Parents need to be conscious of the values they model. “One of the most important things for a financially intelligent parent to be aware of is the messages that their own behavior sends to kids. That ranges from always needing the newest thing, to how you treat the clerk at the department store or the person who is parking your car," says Jon Gallo. Give your kids money and good values, and they will treat money as a tool and be good, responsible people. Give them money without values, and who knows what they will be like,” he adds.

What's Your Favorite Memory of Mom? My favorite memory of my mom is how she PLAYED HIDE & SEEK with me when I was very little. I would hide, and she would be very silly, telling the dog she didn't know where I was, asking if I might be in impossible places, like inside the

teakettle. I couldn't help but giggle continuously, and that would add to the fun, because she would act completely stumped to the dog, saying she could hear me, but couldn't find me. Great memory! – DOROTHY KOVACS

SINGING AND PERFORMING TOGETHER. I come from a very musically talented family. My father was an amazing classical violinist and country music “fiddler”. An interesting combination. My mom was an accomplished country singer, played guitar and wrote and recorded many songs. She was also on many TV shows locally and regionally and quite known in the area. She was also a DJ. And named Miss DJ USA. She had two local weekly radio shows and she used to sing professionally with her band on weekends; she took me with her most of the time for the radio shows and singing when it was appropriate and I would sing with her. I grew to love music because of my mom, primarily, but my dad as well. I was a music minor at WMU with a focus in both vocal and instrumental (playing saxophone). I auditioned and was accepted to perform with the Varsity Vagabonds (now known as Gold Company); we toured Europe in a USO show. I love all kinds of music and love to sing. It is one of my “happy” places.

My mother, thankfully, is still with us and going strong in her 80’s. My favorite thing about her is WATCHING

One of my favorite memories of my mother is an "everyday" memory of her drinking a cup of coffee and eating a leftover piece of cake or pie for breakfast. She had a big smile on her face, with nothing but 100 percent pure genuine excitement to greet the world for another precious day on this planet.
