However, with the twist and turns of fashion, you may find yourself even more confused about what Offer available through March 31, 2018 constitutes an appropriate business casual outfit. With established dress codes loosening, even menswear is undergoing a serious shift. Although the goal of Business Casual was to give more room to maneuver and make it easier to pick out an appropriate outfit, one has to wonder if it hasus really succeeded. Contact at (269) 375-2672

“Business-casual is one of those nonsensical dress codes, like smart-casual, that created bewilderment before it did anythingbronsonhealth.com/plastic-surgery to make people feel more at ease,” says more Josh Sims, author of Men of Style. “On thefor plus side, information. it helped change attitudes to how men could or should dress at (white collar) work, prefiguring the breakdown of office dress codes over the past couple of decades, especially since the tech boom.” In years past, you were safe to consider that the higher the level of management, the dressier the attire. But, times have been a changin! Today, with the take-over Skin & Cosmetic of logo wear and the latest twist of ‘dress for your day’Care dress policies (yikes!!), how do you know what really is appropriate to wear to work? Not only can the events of your day help you decide on how to dress, you should also consider the locale, the individuals with whom you will be, people you might encounter and what you personally want/need to achieve professionally. Within the structure of your company’s dress policy, and your personal considerations for positioning yourself, you can determine what type of attire is best suited to your day. In business casual dress you have two tiers of professional dress to consider:

• Breast surgery • Body contouring • Congenital deformities • Body and facial cosmetics • Reconstructive procedures Drs. Messinger and Stephens are committed to providing you the expert, personalized care you deserve.

Professional Business Casual attire covers a wide range of looks,

which is great for maximum options. On the dressier side, you can pair a suit coat with contrasting dress slacks and a dress shirt with tie (optional). If you need to relax the look, you can opt to wear a sport coat with khakis and a polo, sweater or collarless knit tee. The sport coat or suit coat worn with contrasting slacks is key to this level of business attire.

Smart Business Casual is great for days when you aren’t front and center. It’s more dressed-down than Professional Business Casual, but dressier than weekend wear. You can combine slacks with a shirt or sweater. A sport coat in a casual fabric brings a pair of dark blue or black denim to an acceptable level (but only if your company allows denim). Just remember that jeans and a t-shirt are not business casual!

If you’re not sure where in this range you should be, try considering which level of attire best reflects both you and your company. Which is best suited to your day? Still not sure? It’s always good to err on the dressier side! Remember, the worst thing they will think or say is “you look sharp!” Kelly Duggan is an Image Consultant specializing in executive and personal image development, etiquette & communication skills. FROMTHEPUBLISHER “Let’s be very clear: Strong men - men who are truly role models - don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful. People who are truly strong lift others up. People who are truly powerful bring others together.”

Hey Kalamazoo…we made it to SUMMER! Admit it; you were a little worried it wouldn’t show up this year! It’s time to really gear up and head out into the great outdoors. On the upcoming pages you’ll find some grand ideas for getting outside and enjoying the glory that is summer in Michigan. You’ll find tips and recipes for hiking as well as some ideas for refreshing your beach wardrobe. As always, this June we are taking a moment to focus on the “Men in our Lives. If you are lucky enough to have a great man (or men) in your life, I’m so happy for you! Where would we be without them? They complement our lives, make us laugh out loud and share the daily burdens we all deal with every day. No matter the role they play in our lives (grandkids, grandfathers, sons, brothers, significant others and more), our lives are so much richer because of them. I am so thankful for the amazing men (young and not so young) in my life. How lucky can one woman be? This month I’m also thinking about all the people in my life who make the daily grind bearable. I’m mindful of the people I meet who are outside my “comfort” zone, who manage to reach me in ways I never thought possible. When judgmental attitudes are replaced with thoughts of “Who are

Michelle Obama

you, really? And what are you here to teach me?” life becomes very rich. It feels so sweet to not have to categorize personalities but rather to just experience them and learn something new. As some of my old friends leave me to move on in life, I realize that it’s so important to visit my memories and to also be open to the new in my life. I wish that for you as well. I hope, like me, you have some adventures planned for this summer. I plan to do plenty of kayaking on our local lakes, soaking in the sun at our fabulous beaches and walking along some of our great hiking trails. So, I’m off to do just that! Summer awaits…..

Are You an Investment VICTIM - or OPPORTUNIST?

A

BY SANDY K DERBY, ChFC, CASL, LUTCF | CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ | VP Old National Investments

s the investment world waits for the next bear market to begin, (and no one knows when that will happen), I want you to think about how you are going to react. How do you mentally process a bear market...as a victim or opportunist? Whatever you do, you can’t change a bear market, when it will begin, how long it lasts, or how long it will take to rebound. The only thing you can change is the way you experience the markets. An old Zen parable speaks of two monks who were watching a flapping pennant. One monk said, “The pennant is moving, but the wind is not moving.” The other monk said, “It is the wind that is moving, the pennant is not moving.” A third monk happened along, overheard the conversation, & said, “The pennant is not moving, the wind is not moving, your minds are moving. Nick Murray, author of Simple Wealth, Inevitable Wealth, says “I want you to take this as a parable that precisely describes bear markets.” What is happening in the market is infinitely less important than two things that affect how your mind is moving, while you are watching a bear market.

First, how surprised are you? What the market does to people is never as critical as whether or not, they are surprised by it. If a bear market has surprised you, you probably weren’t completely ready to deal with it. It’s best to have a psychological battle plan already in place for waiting out a bear market. Second, what do you think is happening? It doesn’t matter how hard the wind is blowing or how hard

the pennant is flapping. What do you think is going on? If you think this is the end of the world, you’re going to panic and get out. If you think that “this time is different” – the four most dangerous words in investing – you’re going to panic and get out. Murray suggests we learn, objectively and intellectually, all about bear markets. Start with the bear markets that have occurred in this country since the end of World War II. Find out when they topped and bottomed out, the number of days in between each, and the percentage decline.

If you know the facts and know that bear markets are inevitable, you won’t get surprised, and that’s half the battle. The right mindset allows you to overcome all the media coverage portraying bear markets as the end of the world.

Can you get out at the top of the market and back in at the bottom? Not likely, and definitely not consistently. You don’t know when either the top or bottom is coming. That’s the problem with timing the market; you would need to be right twice and nobody can consistently do that.

Murray encourages us to hold in our minds the horror of those bear market events, as well as the glory of what happened to anyone who ignored them. He wants us to know four things: 1. Bear markets are organic – they are part of the process. This time is not any different than other times. Markets tend to go up, but they also go

down. It is the permanence of the advance and the temporariness of the decline that dictates the buy and hold procedure.

2. Price and value are inversely related. The investor migrates toward things when price is falling because the risk is going down and the value is rising. The speculator does the opposite. He or she equates price with value and chases trends, thinking that as prices go up, so does value.

3. Bear markets are absolutely necessary. The reason equities have returned much more than bonds have, during the last 80 years, is that equities have higher volatility. To wish that equity volatility would go away is to wish that returns would come down. You cannot have it both ways. 4. Accumulators can make their money in bear markets. An accumulator creates the largest increases in his long-term rate of return by remaining a buyer all through bear markets.

If you don’t look at the wind or at the pennant, but focus instead on moving your mind, you can process bear markets not as disasters, but as big sales. It’s not the way of a victim, but the way of an opportunist. Swimwear Refresh S

ummer is finally here and it’s time to update your swimwear collection for the summer. Let fun in the sun begin!

COVER-UP

Choose a cover-up that complements your frame in a style you love to throw over your swimsuit. A cover-up is perfect for those times when you just want to sit by the water or relax on the boat. Cover-ups in neutral colors like white, ivory and black can be worn with different suits, stretching your beach budget.

SWIMSUIT BAG

Look for a beach, pool or swim bag that fits your personality. There are so many bags to choose from, with unique detail, prints, and features. Try choosing a colorful ribbon or scarf to tie on a bag that you already own to give it a pop of color and save a little money.

Hold out for a swimsuit that flatters your shape, highlights your curves and makes you feel your best. Why not step out of your comfort zone and give vibrant colors and bold prints a try this summer?

SUN HAT

SUNGLASSES

Sunglasses are a must when you are out in the sun. This season, find a pair in a new color or a shape you haven’t tried before. Sunglasses are a great statement piece to personalize your overall look!

June 2018

Protect your skin in style. A sun hat will keep the sun off your face and will give you a chance to add more personality to your look. Sun hats come in a variety of colors and sizes, so there’s almost certainly one out there just right for you!

LOOK WHO’S TALKING

M

att Giraud was born in Dearborn and grew up in Ypsilanti but it’s Kalamazoo that holds his heart. Not too long after he graduated from the music program at Western Michigan University, Matt found himself in the national spotlight when he auditioned for, and gained, a spot on Season Eight of American Idol. It was clear early on that the judges loved Matt and considered him one of the top competitors of that year. When the voting results from the Top 7 night came in, and Matt was to be eliminated, the judges proved their loyalty when they invoked the judges’ save for the first time in American Idol history. Matt went on to place fifth overall and did his home state of Michigan proud. He’s since spent time performing all over the world and lived for a while in Nashville before moving home to Kalamazoo. Matt sat down with us to have a little chat and let our readers know what he’s been up to lately.

Matt Giraud

When did your love of music start? Did you take lessons or take part in school music activities?

who have even worked for me. I love Western… I’m still paying for it (laughing) but I love it.

I wasn’t one of those kids who say “I’ve been singing since I was 2 years old and I love it and I was born to do it.” I actually don’t really enjoy singing that much. I was a drummer and that was what I really loved to do. I still do it often when I play piano bars. When I was 15, my mentor made me try to sing. When I did, they said “Ok, you can sing. You’re not going to play drums anymore.” I joined the worship team and that was it. Still, though, I’m more of an instrumentalist at heart. I love to play drums and play piano.

How did it feel to receive the first ever judges’ save?

What made you decide to attend WMU? What was your time like there?

(Chuckling) “Messing up weekly in front of the entire world. It’s one thing to think of making mistakes in front of strangers…it’s another thing when it’s everyone you’ve ever known. They’re all watching at home…every teacher, high school friend. When you have a good week, it’s great but if you have an off week…it feels horrible. It’s the worst. I remember having a few sleepless nights after performances like that. The best part was all the time off TV, meeting the celebrities, hanging out with the other contestants, making commercials.

It was the music program that drew me. I went to a little school (Lincoln High School) and my music teacher told me I needed to come to WMU for Jazz. I auditioned and was accepted into the program in 2003. I remember my time as a Bronco fondly. I think of songs I wrote while there and all the different things that inspired me…even the girls I dated who dumped me. I really liked it here. They say the friends you meet in your first year of college will be your friends forever and that’s true for me. I have friends to this day who I stay in touch with,

When they announced it weeks prior I wondered who they’d think was good enough to save. I never thought it would be me. It was a very emotional moment. When I watch it back now, it’s like WOW. The energy in the room, the whole room chanting at Simon, randomly seeing Zac Efron in the front row, it was all so overwhelming and surreal.

What were the hardest (and best) parts about being on American Idol?

What are your favorite memories from those days? Singing for Smokey Robinson comes to mind. We were sitting in a big fancy house and they told

us someone was coming…and in walks Smokey Robinson. They told us we were going to sing our Motown songs for him. I was singing “Let’s Get it On” by Marvin Gaye. I was singing for him and he was smiling at me. I’ll never forget that he said “Marvin would love that”. It meant a lot to me because he knew Marvin.

It’s been 9 years since your time on American Idol. What are you up to now? A lot of performances and corporate events. I’ve had a couple number ones songs in the Jazz world. I had a song on the radio here in the last year called “Fated”. I just booked 6 weeks playing in Atlantic City at the opening of a new casino. I had the opportunity to travel the world for “Symphony Idol” with a couple of girls from other seasons. Got to get all glammed up and play with 80 piece symphonies. I play a lot at piano bars and weddings; I keep pretty busy. The power and reach of American Idol blows my mind. It’s opened doors for me and created opportunities that I really appreciate.

What made you choose to settle in Kalamazoo? I lived in LA for a bit after, American Idol and then moved to Nashville to see what it was like. I wrote a lot of songs and had a lot of fun…but I just missed home so much. In this day and age, with the internet, you can do music anywhere. I’m just too much of a Michigan boy to ever permanently leave.

Tell us a little about your son, Beckham, and how he’s changed your world and perspective: A kid will force you to grow up. I still feel like a kid raising a kid. He’s forced me to grow up quick. Before he came along it was all about me; what do I want to do? It was all about my life. Once your child comes along, he becomes the priority. You think about him when you make all your decisions. What kind of car is safest? I am not that crazy helicopter parent but I hooked up security cameras and remote cameras so I could check on him while he’s sleeping. You worry, you know. Sometimes I wonder what’s happened to me. I used to be so laid back (chuckles)! I’m so proud to be his Dad.

to look out at the world around him, wanting to be part of it with songs like “Out There”…I felt like him. I wanted to get out there and experience the world. I did end up getting that chance…to go out there and see what it was like.

With which musician or group (living or dead) would you absolutely love to perform? Ray Charles or Louis Armstrong

What advice do you have for someone wanting to break into the music industry? I teach now. I do private lessons (vocals, piano, life coaching) and I tell my students to listen to as much music as you can and get on stage as much as you can. Some people say, “I don’t do open mic nights. That’s beneath me”. Get over that. Get over yourself. It holds you back. Get up there and do it. It’s not about the money…it’s about opportunities. Take advantage of any opportunities that come to practice your craft. Be a sponge… don’t be a diva. The world needs fewer divas.

Where do you keep your golden ticket? You know, I don’t know if I even have that anymore! I betcha I do though, because I have a massive box of stuff in my garage that I can’t even move (it’s like a fridge box).

What does your perfect day “off” look like? Honestly? Being alone. Not leaving the house at all. I like to be a hermit, chillin’ and watching the news, making funny videos. Lately, since meeting a wonderful woman, I’ve been spending more of those days with her. A trip to Target feels like a vacation when I’m with her.

You don’t have it framed? No…I keep cooler stuff framed. For example, the key to Kalamazoo framed… THAT I have framed.

Which movie character would you most like to be? Winnie the Pooh so I can eat honey all day. Nah, just kidding. I don’t know about wanting be a particular character, but I often identify with them. It’s totally random, but the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I know I don’t look like him (that much) but I see myself a little bit in that movie. I feel like I’m a lonely soul and the way he used

Dad Wants

STEAK BY FAMILY FEATURES

Give Your Dad the Best For Father’s Day D

ads typically love steak, so this Father’s Day, go ahead and shower him with some love straight off the grill. You can make the day even more memorable by sharing the grilling experience together.

marbling on a ribeye means more fat, which melts during cooking. This is a good thing, but you may experience more dripping or flare-ups if you’re used to grilling leaner steaks.

In fact, it may be the perfect chance to teach your old man a thing or two with these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef Grant Hon.

To minimize the need to open the grill cover, determine the amount of time you’ll need to reach your desired doneness then use the 60-40 grilling method. Grill 60 percent on the first side then 40 percent after you turn the steak over for an even cook.

Choose Your Protein

Selecting quality protein is the starting place for an exceptional grilled meal. For example, the ribeye is the most well-marbled steak, meaning it’s super juicy, rich with beefy flavor and excellent on the grill.

Prepare the Grill

Always start with clean grill grates. Heat your gas grill to high or start your charcoal 10-15 minutes before you grill. Dip a paper towel in oil using tongs and oil your grill grates before adding steaks for a great sear.

Prepare the Meat

Pat steaks dry with a clean paper towel and season them before they hit the grill. You can’t go wrong with simple sea salt and cracked pepper, but creative recipes like this Dukkah Rub can add a special twist.

Let it Rest Sear and Crust

Cook steaks directly over your heat source to get a tasty, crunchy sear on the outside of the steak. This is where the best flavor comes from, and it offers a delicious contrast to the rich, juicy inside of the cut.

Control Your Cook

Keep the grill cover closed as much as possible to maintain a temperature of around 450 F. This helps lock in flavor and prevent flare-ups. Remember the

A resting time of at least 5 minutes allows steak juices to redistribute for the best eating experience. A foil tent can help regulate temperature during the resting period.

Garnish and Flavor

Whether you’re grilling vegetables, sauteing onions or adding a different kind of sweet or savory topping, just before you serve is the right time to garnish your steak. Find more expert tips for summer grilling and the perfect Father’s Day gift at OmahaSteaks.com.market.

Ways to Overcome Your Fear of Gardening

T

hree percent of people who buy a plant say it dies the same day. Admitting failure is a great teacher. There are no gardening mistakes, just experiments. For many, the exercise of gardening is curb appeal: a horticultural selfie for all to see. Here is where the landscape at our front steps can go off the rails: You can opt to plant the same thing everyone else in your neighborhood does, or you can break the cycle of cemented mindsets and go out on a limb. Your landscape is like your life: The objective is not to “prove” yourself, but rather to “improve” yourself. Here are some tips on how to grow your green thumb and overcome your fear of gardening failure.

1 2 18

Kill some plants. If you haven’t killed any plants, you’re not trying hard enough. Remember, the goal is not to never fail, but rather to fail better each time in the quest to advance results.

Work some low maintenance plants into your landscape. Enjoy their robust growth all the while knowing you’re not doing a thing. Own-root roses are an example of a workhorse in a good sunny area.

Look down, not up. Start with the planting area and soil.

Garden in October and November when few others are. Take advantage of bargains and try them out; they may become a beautiful focal point on your plot.

“Kill some plants. If you haven’t killed any plants, you’re not trying hard enough.”

5

An epic garden, like most great changes, are preceded by chaos. Pace yourself. Rome wasn’t built in a day — same goes for your garden.

6 7 8

Get a houseplant before you branch out. Practice. Learn to nurture. Understand most plants are killed with kindness; too much water is the number one killer of houseplants.

Get some plants that work three to four seasons for you. The perennial Nepeta or ornamental grasses are good examples of plants that work nearly all year long.

Be willing to experiment. Don’t be a cookie cutter neighbor.

The Rewards of Traveling

T

his month, as we celebrate the spirit of adventure in all of its forms, we want to draw attention to the solo endeavor. While sharing a journey with others can be an incredible experience that can lead to the strongest of bonds, embarking on an adventure alone reaps rewards to be found nowhere else. Whether you are hiking one of Michigan’s stunning state parks, traveling to a new town or jetting across the globe, here are some of the treasures you will yield from your solo excursion:

You Will Learn Your Strengths and Weaknesses

As you come up against the inevitabilities of traveling (late flights, navigating unfamiliar cities, language barriers), your strengths, some of which may be surprising to you, will emerge. You will learn what you can rely on yourself for and what you are better off asking for help with, which leads us to our next point.

You Will Learn to Ask for Help

No one can accomplish great things all by themselves. Even with all of the advantages of modern technology, you will have to ask for help, whether you are asking for directions or help interpreting a menu. In our everyday lives, we do not often face situations in which we must reach outside of our comfort zone and ask for assistance; doing so can be a beautiful, humbling thing that will remind you we are all in this together.

You Will Enjoy You

Nothing allows you to enjoy your own company more than bearing witness to awe-inspiring sights and having only yourself to share it with. You will forge a deep and lasting connection with yourself as you are immersed in the beauty of our world, uninterrupted. Instead of turning to those next to you and saying, “Wow!”, you will be rooted in the moment as you fill with wonder.

You Will Learn to Ask Yourself What You Want

When you are traveling alone, your itinerary is yours to create. Instead of asking your companions, “What do you want to do today?” you instead ask yourself, “What do I want to do today?” The answers may surprise you. Do you want to spend an afternoon reading on the beach? Try a nibble at every local bakery you can find? Climb a mountain? Take a tour? Go to a concert? Ride a bike? Visit museums? Kayak? Rest? It’s all up to you. Being decisive about what you do, and pivoting if it doesn’t work out, is an invaluable skill that you will carry with you when you return home.

Solo

BY RENEE FRANKLIN

Tips for a Safe Solo Adventure Research, Research, Research

Did we mention research? Familiarize yourself with your destination. Read travel blogs, study maps, watch videos and read guidebooks. Before you arrive, you will want to understand what the public transportation is like, which areas you should avoid, what the weather patterns are, if you need vaccinations and where to go in case of emergency.

Make Copies of Your Documents

Bring your essential documents (ID, visa if necessary, travel insurance, health information, tickets, and pre-paid confirmations) and leave your wallet safely at home. A money belt or a travel purse that fits around your neck, both of which can be worn under your clothing, are excellent measures to prevent theft. Make a copy of each document and store them in a separate place, such as your luggage, and be sure to store in a locked place at your accommodation. Alternately, take pictures of the documents and store them in a cloud you can access from any device. Having these copies will save you further headache in the case your documents are misplaced or stolen.

Check-In

Email your itinerary to your family and friends so they can keep up with your journey. Check with your cell phone carrier beforehand to see if you will have service at your destination. If not, rent a pocket Wi-Fi device for the duration of your trip. Whether you are hiking in Northern Michigan or city-hopping through Europe, use the Wi-Fi device to send a quick check-in text or email your family and friends each day, so they know you are safe and having the time of your life. Additionally, if you are in a state or national park, alert the ranger station of your plans.

Spend Money on Safety

Spring for a hotel, hostel or bed and breakfast in a reputable area close to public transit. If you are joining a tour group, spend a little extra on the company with the highest safety ratings. Make a cushion in your budget for taking a taxi at night instead of walking. Buy a high-end hiking coat that will protect you from the elements in case of inclement weather. Last but not least, have fun! Adventure solo is one of the most enriching gifts you can give yourself. After all, the world is your oyster, so why not dig in?

Get Ready to Run COURTESY OF FAMILY FEATURES

Y

ou’ve made the decision to get in shape, and whether your goal is a full marathon or simply a few laps around the neighborhood, there are a few steps to consider taking before you strap on those shoes and head toward the finish line. Here are a few tips to help get you ready for the big race.

Seek Quality Sneakers

Feet come in a variety of widths and sizes, so visit a specialty running store to find perfect-fitting sneakers. These may come with a hefty price tag, but there are no shortcuts for comfort and support while running long distances.

Make a Schedule

Try to aim for at least 10 hours of training per week, including three days where you run and two or three days of other physical activity such as cycling or strength training. To avoid exhaustion, be sure to include at least 1-2 rest days per week.

Stick with Water

Avoid sports drinks that are loaded with preservatives and sugars. You can’t go wrong with the hydrating power of water. As a rule, try to consume at least 6-8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you run. Proper hydration after the run is also vital.

Use Your Tech

If you have a smartphone, look for apps, such as Couch to 5K, Pacer, or Human, that can take you through day-by-day workouts to get you marathon-ready.

Nutrition

Filling your body with the proper amount of fuel can help ensure finish-line success. Load up on quality carbohydrates such as beans, peas, whole-wheat pasta, whole-grain cereals, apples, brown rice and root vegetables. Protein also plays an essential role in a runner’s nutrition, so fill up on lean meats, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, peanut butter and soy protein sources as well.

LOOK WHO’S TALKING

Rep. Jon Hoadley

N

o matter their voting records or party of choice, most citizens would be quick to admit that the past couple of years have been particularly rough in American politics. It seems that the divide between Democrats and Republicans grows wider with every waking minute. It’s often said that politics is the art of compromise, but these days it can seem like it’s a lost art. That’s why, when I found myself seated next to Representative Jon Hoadley at a recent event, I found our conversation so refreshing. Elected in 2014 to represent the 60th District in the Michigan House of Representatives (and recently re-elected for a second term), Representative Hoadley impressed me with the respect he displayed when speaking about his colleagues on both sides of the aisle and the passion he exuded when talking about the work he’s doing for his constituents. He graciously agreed to an interview with us and we’re thrilled to be able to share it with you.

Hometown:

Vermillion, South Dakota

GO GRE Education: EN! I graduated from Vermillion High School and earned BAs in Public Policy & Women’s Studies from Michigan State University.

Tell us a little about your home life:

I love living in Kalamazoo. My partner Kris and I currently live in the city of Kalamazoo on Parkview Avenue. We love living near great shopping, Asylum Lake and local restaurants while still feeling like part of a neighborhood. We’ve managed to find a balance between having enough space so Kris can work on his tractors, building projects and landscaping while being close enough for me to attend community events, utilize the running trails and have easy access to the supplies I need for cooking and baking. When we’re not on a motorcycle ride, traveling or playing board games with friends, you can find us hanging out with the world’s friendliest beagle, our dog Benjamin.

What made you decide to enter the world of politics?

I ran for office because I believe in a Michigan that invests in people. Coming from a family of educators, I knew I wanted to do more to help public education. I also own a small business, so helping to raise wages for working families was a top priority. Finally, I find myself working closely on issues to end discrimination, promote pay equity, protect the environment and improve the democratic process.

What qualities do you think makes one a good politician?

I originally didn’t think I was the right type of person to run for office. However, my good friend Mary Harper encouraged me to run for office, and we haven’t looked back since. A lot of folks have amazing experiences, skills and talents to contribute to public service but aren’t sure they’re the right fit. Those are exactly the type of people we need to run! If you’re reading this and you have a passion to serve but not sure where to start on your journey, please reach out. If you know someone who should be serving in office but they aren’t right now, go have a conversation with that person. Your one voice might change our community for the better.

How did your previous career prepare you for working in the House of Representatives?

I own a company called Badlands Strategies that specializes in coalition management. Basically, we help keep big groups of people with different viewpoints and priorities on track towards their common goal—a skill that’s proven useful in the legislature. I’ve also helped run campaigns, like the One Kalamazoo campaign that defended the City of Kalamazoo’s

28

June 2018

nondiscrimination ordinance in 2009 when it was updated to treat all our neighbors fairly and equally. I’ve run campaigns across the country, run nonprofits and worked in various strategy and advisory roles. I’m really blessed to have such a diversity of management, entrepreneurial and academic experiences.

Why do you think the people of the 60th district elected you to represent them?

When we knocked on doors over 27,000 times to get elected the first time I ran for office, the most common reasons people told us that they were voting for us was because we spent more time listening than pretending we had all the answers. Too many politicians claim to have all the answers or will tell you what they think you want to hear. However, the elected officials I’ve admired most have always spent more time showing up and listening to what the people they’re supposed to serve actually have to say. At the end of the day, I know we won’t always agree on every issue or every vote but my door is always open. I strongly encourage folks to connect with me online at facebook.com/Jon.Hoadley on Twitter @jonhoadley or by calling our local District Service Office at 269.382.4676 or stopping by at 315 N Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.

What is your favorite part of serving as a Representative?

My favorite parts of being a State Representative is learning something new every day and helping people. I love when I’m out touring local businesses or schools and finding out what inspires people to make a difference in their community and for their families. I’ve learned more about more things in the last four years than I would have thought possible.

WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com

I also love when we get to solve practical problems folks are facing. The 60th District Service Office, which has been continuously operating since 1973 entirely without tax-payer support, helps people cut through the red tape and connect with resources in our community to solve problems. Getting around the roadblock with someone who is trying to improve their situation but was stuck is one of the most positive experiences of the job. If you know someone who needs help, please contact us.

What do you like to do in your spare time? Any hobbies or passions?

In my spare time, you’ll find me running, baking or playing board games. I also have always loved baking, but borrowing from a suggestion Sen. O’Brien gave me, I found baking cookies for my colleagues in the legislature is a great way to bring together different folks around your desk to build relationships.

didn’t even blink when saying, “We moved for me the first time. Now we’ll move for you.” No wonder they’ve been married for nearly 40 years!

What is your greatest goal for your tenure in the House of Representatives?

My greatest goal for serving in the Michigan House of Representatives is that people in Michigan feel their lives are better as a result. I hope when I leave we have better funded schools, lower tuition costs for college students, stronger anti-discrimination laws, districts that aren’t gerrymandered and a cleaner environment. I’m going to need a lot of help to get that done!

If you could wave a wand and change one thing about American politics, what would it be?

President Barack Obama told us, “Every day we use all the tools we have to fight cynicism, to unlock the possible and make life better for the American people and people around the world.” I wish we could encourage people to remain hopeful, fight cynicism and stay involved. Millions of people choose not to vote at all. No one can do everything, but if we all did something, we could change the world for the better.

If given the chance to talk to the teenage version of yourself, what would you tell him? Get a little more sleep, Jon. You’re going to need it.

Describe your perfect day off:

My perfect day off starts with sleeping in a bit and then enjoying a great cup of peppermint tea. Maybe I’ll get to take Benjamin for a walk, meet friends for lunch, take a long, slow run in the afternoon and top it all off with a motorcycle ride to dinner with Kris. If there’s a way I’m doing this near a lake, even better.

Who inspires you?

The greatest inspiration in my life comes from my family. My mom was an example of a woman who worked hard, rose above the challenges placed in her career path and was a real success. Plus, she did it while finding time to support my sister and me in all of our activities. My dad is another great example of what leadership looks like. I loved the story of how my mother followed him out to the University of South Dakota for his first job, and when it came time for my mom to take the next major step in her career, my dad

Everyone Can Hike

Kalamazoo Dames Hit the Trails

Y

BY ANDREW DOMINO

ou don’t need a backpack and training in survival skills to enjoy a walk in the southwest Michigan woods. All you need is a Trail Dame. For about three years (with a year-long “pause” while the group looked for a new leader), the Trail Dames in Michigan have been headed out on monthly walks around the Kalamazoo area. They’re not serious outdoor experts, with all the latest equipment. Instead, the Trail Dames are about one thing most of all: companionship. “The most common response we get (from participants) is, ‘I didn’t even know this trail was here,’ or, ‘I’m so glad I made friends,’” said Delia Baker, 33, of Kalamazoo. She’s been head of the Michigan chapter of Trail Dames since it reactivated in 2017. Founded in Georgia, Trail Dames is a group for women hikers “of a curvy nature,” as the group’s website (traildames.com/about.html) puts it. There are nearly two dozen chapters nationwide. Baker puts the Michigan group’s hikes together about once a month and lists them on the Meetup group page (meetup. com/Trail-Dames-of-Kalamazoo). A year-long membership starts at $23, increasing when you add benefits like a membership to the American Hiking Society (a Maryland-based non-profit organization that supports environmentally sustainable hiking). There’s even an annual summit for the Trail Dames where attendees will hear from guest speakers about hiking techniques and trail stories. This year’s summit is in July in North Carolina. Baker is trained in first aid and wears a backpack with emergency supplies. Hikers themselves just need to

30

June 2018

bring water, she said. The Trail Dames website — and hiking experts — recommend wearing wool or synthetic clothing that’s less likely to get cold when it’s wet (from rain or perspiration when hikers are sweating in the summer sun). For most hikes in the Kalamazoo region, tennis shoes are fine, Baker said, though hiking boots can work just as well.

“You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” — Edith Head Why They Walk

The Trail Dames have walked some of the betterknown trails in the Kalamazoo area, including Celery Flats and Fort Custer, as well as lower-profile routes like Chipman Preserve in Comstock. Hikes are usually 4 miles or fewer and Baker notes that she tries to select locations and walking routes for different experience levels, varying from short walks on paved paths for new walkers to longer trails for veteran hikers. “We have women of all shapes and sizes,” Baker says. “Some have years of experience in hiking, others have never stepped outside for more than a mile.” The hikes are usually done in a just a few

hours, typically in a loop along a walking path. A “Wine and Walk” last June brought the group to wine tastings in South Haven. Most hikes draw about a dozen people. Baker shares that the youngest walker, a member’s daughter, was 17, while the oldest member was 82, though most are in their mid- to late 40s. At that age, many women are busy with children and careers and don’t have the time for their own activities, she says. “They’re looking for camaraderie,” Baker notes. “I’ve heard people say, ‘I need friends.’” Debbie Power, 63, of Battle Creek says she joined the Trail Dames for that very reason. She moved to Battle Creek a few years ago as part of her recovery from cancer. She has been canoeing throughout her adult life and enjoys being outdoors. For her, the Trail Dames has been a good way to make new friends. “From the start, they have been welcoming,” she shares. “There are so many older ladies who are alone. They need a group to have people to talk to.” Power, now retired from owning a self-storage facility, loves to paint when she’s not out hiking. She joined the Trail Dames about a year ago and says she wants to go on more trips, no matter what the skill level the trail requires. “We’re not hard core,” Power encourages. “Bring your bottle of water and tennis shoes; go out and have fun.” You can see more of Andrew Domino’s writing at www.dominowriting.com

T

HE TRAIL DAMES aren’t the only ones taking to the pathways of Kalamazoo County. Here are a few of the trails in our area where you can spend an afternoon enjoying the great outdoors. All of the trails listed here are free.

Kal-Haven Trail

The Kal-Haven Trail runs from 10th Street in Kalamazoo all the way to the Lake Michigan shore in South Haven, for a total of 33 miles. It passes through small towns like Alamo and Gobles on the way. Like many trails, it’s popular with bikers and even horseback riders, too.

Asylum Lake

Asylum Lake Trail, at Drake Road and Parkview Avenue in Kalamazoo, is named for the Michigan Asylum for the Insane, a mental hospital that owned the land back in the 1880s. The hospital is long gone but the trail remains. It now belongs to Western Michigan University and earth science students sometimes take field trips there to study the land. Two paths, one on Drake and one on Parkview, lead into the heart of the property, and offer views of the lake itself before moving up and out through an open field and back to the start of the pathways. A warning, though: on a clear day, it might be hard to find a parking spot in the small lots.

Kleinstuck Preserve

The Kleinstuck Preserve trail makes a loop through neighborhoods near Westnedge Avenue, not too far south of downtown Kalamazoo. Like the Asylum Lake property, the Kleinstuck Preserve is owned by WMU, but is open to the public for walking and hiking. There are six routes into the Preserve from streets around the property.

Al Sabo

Bordering Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s Texas Township campus is the Al Sabo Land Preserve, named for a former Kalamazoo government department head. There are some 25 miles of trails leading through woods, open fields and even alongside Portage Creek. Al Sabo’s multiple trails are marked where they cross one another; look for names like “Mandala,” “Lookout,” and “Moab.” The trail starts at a dirt parking lot on Texas Drive.

Fred McLinden Nature Trails

A nearly two-mile loop leads from H Avenue west of Sprinkle Road in Comstock. This natural area is named for a former Comstock resident and nature lover. There’s a side trail that leads to Campbell Lake, if you’re looking for a little longer walk with some nice views along the way.

Chipman Preserve

The Trail Dames have hiked Chipman Preserve in Galesburg, which offers five miles of trails. It’s close to the McLinden trails — you could even hike from one to the other! The Chipman Preserve is on East Main Street, and shares its southern border with the office of the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, a non-profit organization that preserves “wild and scenic places” in the southwest Michigan region (swmlc.org).

READER’S

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein This has been a favorite book club pick for several years. Yes, it is told by Enzo, a very old dog. Who tells his story in retrospect as he is dying. Denny is his human family and is a race car driver that has had his share of life trials. Sensitive and insightful; it’s hard to put down and still a favorite for discussion.

Bel Canto by Ann Patchet This award winning novel is loosely based on a true event that took place in Peru in 1996. It begins as an international cast of political dignitaries are taken hostage by the local peasants. So begins a long standoff where we begin to learn about each person and their interaction with each other and how they handle their situation. There is a music theme throughout that affects everyone including the romantic interest that blooms amid the terror.

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver Enjoy again this first novel by award winning author Kingsolver. Taylor is running from or running to a new life with a new name. Along the way she becomes a mother when a Cherokee woman drops a baby into the front seat of her car. Funny and poignant and gritty; this is a great start to your summer look back reading time.

The author brings us new insights into how Anne became a woman in the shadows behind her very famous husband. Unable to have the marriage she wished for, she adapted to have the enduring marriage that made them a couple, despite their hardships.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon This is a classic time travel series that has been made into a Starz show. Beginning after WWII Claire is soon transported to 1743 where survival means marrying a Scots warrior. Romantic and adventuresome this 9 book series will hook you. If you like to binge read a series in the summer, this makes an excellent pick. Watch the TV show later.
