June 2019 - The Men in Our Lives
H
appy Father’s Day to all the men in our lives! I am privileged to know so many outstanding men, both in my personal life and in this wonderful community of ours. Men who know how to be role models in a way that never makes those they lead feel belittled. To all those men, I want to say a sincere thank you. Thank you for taking the time to make those around you feel inspired by your example. People sometimes make comments (always disguised as jests) about how I must not like men because I publish a women’s magazine. Yikes! Nothing could be farther from the truth. I had a father whose memory still makes me smile often, despite the fact that he’s been gone for over 30 years. His words of wisdom and his great sense of humor are still fresh in my mind. I have a “significant other,” sons, grandsons, brothers, nephews, and friends who are fantastic men who lead lives governed by great faith and values. Because of the great esteem I hold for these incredible men, this June magazine is (as it is every year) dedicated to the men who make Southwest Michigan the best place to live. No matter what your role in life, please know you matter! You enhance the lives of everyone around you. Despite the crazy weather in April that made it seem summer would never arrive, my calendar tells me it’s June. Let’s get out there and enjoy every moment of our summer. Somebody start up the BBQ grill!
Till next month
- Darlene
“The day will come when men will recognize woman as his peer, not only at the fireside, but in council of the nation. Then, and not until then, will there be the perfect comradeship, the ideal union between the sexes that shall result in the highest development of the race.” – Susan B. Anthony “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” – Calvin Coolidge “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” – Harry S Truman

CONGRESSMAN
LOOK WHO’S TALKING
FRED UPTON
BY ERICA SHIER
Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking & thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing & trying to keep on top of the laundry.
C
ongressman Fred Upton did not grow up with plans of becoming a politician. In fact, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Michigan and dreamed of one day covering the Chicago Cubs. His first job out of college, however, had him working as an aide to former Congressman Dave Stockman. Congressman Stockman served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget under Ronald Reagan. Fred Upton also served during the Reagan administration as the Director of Legislative Affairs of the Office of Management and Budget before his successful congressional bid in 1986. During his stint in the Reagan administration, some folks back in Southwest Michigan suggested that he run for Congress. He was hesitant at first but was ultimately convinced to throw his hat into the ring. His resulting victory over the incumbent Congressman was the only such victory during the 1986 election cycle. Congressman Upton has
been serving his constituents in the 6th Congressional District with pride ever since. Mr. Upton is committed to finding commonsense solutions to the problems faced by the families and businesses of Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District and he has earned a reputation for working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to achieve meaningful change. His top priorities remain job creation, economic growth and working to help all residents of Southwest Michigan to live longer, better lives. Congressman Upton maintains two offices to better serve his constituents. One is located in Kalamazoo and the other can be found in his beloved hometown of St. Joseph. The part of his job that he values the most is his ability to connect with and make meaningful improvements to the lives of those he serves. He has served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and is currently the top Republican on the House Subcommittee on Energy and Commerce. He is also the Vice Chair of the Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. While Mr. Upton is proud to serve the people of the great state of Michigan in Congress, his greatest joy comes from his role as a happy husband to Amey and devoted father to his grown children, Meg and Stephen. He met his beautiful wife while playing backgammon and

she’s been his biggest cheerleader and greatest support. He credits her with keeping his feet on the ground and acknowledges that, were it not for her sacrifices, he could not be the kind of public servant that he endeavors to be for his constituents.
When he’s not spending his time in Washington DC, voting on bills and working with colleagues to craft legislation, he’s back home attending events and making every effort to connect with those he represents. In his rare moments of down time, he enjoys exploring Michigan’s natural wonders with his family. Special favorites are skiing during the long, snowy winters and enjoying the Great Lakes during our lovely (and too short) summers. On a particularly lovely Michigan day, constituents might even catch a glimpse of their Congressman cruising down the highway, top down, with Bruce Springsteen on the radio.

DISCOVER SOUTH HAVEN
Living in Southwest Michigan comes with many perks, one of the best being the beautiful Lake Michigan beaches. There is really nothing better than soaking up the summer sunshine on the lakeshore & one of the best places to do that is in beautiful South Haven.
When writing these features, I typically reach out to readers and ask "what is your favorite thing to do in whatever town I am researching.” The number one response (by far) when I ask this question about South Haven was SHERMAN’S DAIRY BAR. Located at 1601 Phoenix Street, Sherman’s serves some of the most decedent ice cream treats in Michigan. Make sure and try the Pig’s Dinner or a double cone with blueberry and lemon custard.
South Haven offers visitors four beautiful, sandy beaches full of fun and activities. Pack your beach bag for a day of fun in the sun and enjoy volleyball, swimming, sunning, kite boarding and more. NORTH BEACH, SOUTH BEACH, VAN BUREN STATE BEACH & DUNES and PACKARD PARK are waiting to welcome you with white sand beaches and refreshing Lake Michigan water. If you are looking for the perfect spot to enjoy summer with your pup, look no further than South Haven. DEERLICK CREEK PARK BEACH and VAN BUREN STATE PARK are both pet friendly beaches. After fun in the sun, head into town with your pooch and enjoy one of the many pet friendly stores and restaurants downtown. For a complete list visit: www.southhaven.org/pet-friendly
If the fabulous beaches weren’t enough to entice you to visit South Haven, the outstanding culinary scene should do the trick. No matter what you are craving, South Haven satisfies. Small plates and martinis are the specialties at TASTE. Juicy burgers, flaky perch, cold beer and the best onion rings you’ve ever had await you at CLEMENTINE’S. THE BLACK RIVER TAVERN offers traditional pub food, a full bar and some of the most delicious chicken wings ever. Cruise over to CAPTAIN LOU’S, grab a table outside, sit back, watch the boats go by on the Black River and enjoy one of their famous perch baskets and a signature cocktail (like the North Point Cooler).

DEVELOPING AN Appropriate BUSINESS CASUAL WARDROBE FOR MEN
A
lthough the goal of Business Casual was to give more room to maneuver and make it easier to pick out an appropriate outfit, has it really done that? Many, who had a set standard in their dress, are a bit befuddled with the change. And more specifically on what to wear, when, and how. Better yet, on how to do it well. In these times that we live in, how do you know what really is appropriate to wear to work? And, how is it best to develop this new type of wardrobe?
CONSIDERATIONS IN “APPROPRIATE” Not only can the events of your day help you decide on how to dress, also consider the locale, the individuals you will be with, or others you might encounter, and what you personally want/need to achieve professionally. Within the structure of your company’s dress policy, and your personal considerations on positioning yourself, you can determine what type of attire is best suited to your day. In business casual dress you have two tiers of professional dress to consider: Professional Business Casual attire covers a wide range of looks, which is
great for maximum options. The sport coat or suit coat worn with contrasting slacks is key to this level of business attire.
FINAL THOUGHTS
TRENDS AND WARDROBE DEVELOPMENT
Professional Business Casual Wardrobe Recommendations
Three trends in menswear, creating a pleasingly appropriate Professional Business Casual to Smart Casual look include – a jacket. They include:
SUITS
Smart Business Casual is more dressed-down than Professional Business Casual, but dressier than weekend wear. This level of dress is great for days when you aren’t front and cente
Traditional suiting completed with nontraditional prints or polo knit fabrics in button front shirt styling. Mixed suiting. The traditional suit worn three ways, including the suit trouser paired with a patterned sport coat, or lose the suit jacket for an on-trend outerwear piece. Or, pair a patterned suit jacket with a contrast trouser or pant.
With denim, for a Smart Casual yet dressed look. Pair the classic jacket or sport coat with a dark washed denim, and finish with complementary accessories and shoe.
When making your garment selection for the day, remember to consider your activities, who you will be with/where, and what your goal or purpose is. If you’re still not sure which look to choose, know that it’s always better to err on the dressier side. And, trust your gut … when in doubt, don’t!

THE MEN IN OUR LIVES
DAVID BARRINGER Husband, father, pastor, author, blogger, friend…these are a few of the many hats David Barringer wears and he wears them very well. Dave, his wife Anne and their children Cami and Ethan moved to the Kalamazoo area 10 years ago when Dave accepted the position of lead pastor at Kalamazoo First Assembly. During that time, Dave has made a few personal transitions including that of being the father of young children to the father of a teenager and a young adult. We recently sat down over a cup of coffee to learn more about his life and his take on fatherhood & the ever-tricky work-life balance.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS? I don’t necessarily have a favorite thing to do with both of them. Because they are extremely different, I tailor-make my “favorite thing” based upon them. For Ethan, hiking and movies are our thing. For Cammi, coffee shops and Chinese food are our thing.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW DADS?
Q&A
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A FATHER?
I think my proudest moment as a father is seeing my kids learn from their mistakes instead of blaming somebody for them. Watching them learn & grow makes me a proud dad.
WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR FATHER? Humility. There is a day where I got a spanking for bullying kids at the bus stop. Then he found out that it wasn’t me involved whatsoever and he sat down on the porch with me and ask for my forgiveness. That day I learned that dads are human and make mistakes and the more human and humbler I can be, the better I could be an example for my kids.
My best piece of advice for any dad would be this: don’t love your children the same, love them different. I love both of my children immensely. I don’t love one more than the other, but both must be loved in a specific way that speaks to them.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY? I have come to realize that there is no such thing as work-life balance. There are always going to be parts of your life that are out of balance. At times your home life is going to require much more attention than your work life. At other times, your professional life will be the focus and your personal life will take a back seat. I have found that a happy, productive life is about learning to mesh the different areas together. PHOTO BY CB PHOTOGRAPHY

THE MEN IN OUR LIVES
BILL GARNETT Bill Garnett is a busy man who seems to make excellence look so easy. A husband, father of three adult children and the fixed operations manager for DeNooyer Chevrolet and DeNooyer Ford, Bill knows that finding balance between the professional and personal can be daunting at times. I sat down with Bill asked him about balancing the roles of father, husband and professional.
Q&A
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE NEW DADS? Don’t worry about being perfect! Be open to mentors, share and accept help, be present, stay the course and don’t stop praying for your family.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS? My favorite thing to do with my oldest (son) is to play video games, just like when he was a pre-teen. This allows us to connect and catch up on life. Otherwise, we like to see action movies together. The next oldest (son) and I love to play sports together, mainly basketball. These games are still pretty competitive. Our next favorite thing is to just grill and relax. My youngest (daughter) and I really enjoy cooking together and our other favorite activities are to eat or take long walks.
Most would agree, at times, it is easier said than done. I admit, it has not been that easy for me at different times of my life. This is what I say to others: This is our workplace, not our lives. When we are here we work and when we leave for the day, we live our lives. This is what I’ve learned over the years. You have to carve out little moments throughout the day to think about your loved ones. We too often bring too much of our work thoughts home but fail to carry thoughts of our loved ones to work with us. Let your family know you are thinking about them during your daily breaks.
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT AS A FATHER? Watching our children grow up and find their way in life, the adult relationships they have developed with each other and the relationship my wife and I have with them are my proudest accomplishments. Restaurant Review SILVER BEACH PIZZA
410 Vine Street | St. Joseph, MI | (269) 983-4743 Thru Labor Day: SUN – TH 11a – 10p | F – SAT 11a – 11p I drove to the Lakeshore on a sunny and warm Sunday because I have been on the hunt for the area’s best pizza. I have heard over and over again throughout the years that SILVER BEACH PIZZA is where it’s at.
garage doors in this area to give it a nice indoor/outdoor feel. The day I visited was only about 70 degrees, so they remained shut. There was also a cute little bar in this area. The décor was cute and eclectic.
After studying their website, I was told they don’t take reservations, but you can use an app to get in line before you get there. Since it was early in the season, I figured it wouldn’t be bad, so I decided to chance it.
There was a large green plastic dot on our table, and we were instructed to flip it over to the other side, which was red, if we needed our server to stop by. I immediately flipped it! We were starved and I wanted to get an appetizer in sooner than later.
When we arrived in St. Joe, I was surprised as to how busy the beach town was! I found my way to hostess station to get checked in and was relieved to find out it was only about a 30-minute wait. There was an Antique show going up right next to the restaurant, so we walked over there and looked around for a little bit. After about 20 minutes, we headed back to the restaurant, found a nice bench outside the doors and enjoyed the sunshine. What was cool was that when we checked in, they got my phone number and said we would get a text message when our table was ready. Sure enough, about five minutes after we got to our nice spot outside, I received a text message saying that our table was ready! We were brought back to a high-top table in the “patio” area of the restaurant. It’s actually indoors, but on warmer days they open the

Our server greeted us shortly. I ordered one of their famous SCHOONERS, which is simply a large beer with a frozen glass. We also ordered their FRICKLES (fried pickles) to start. What seemed like just a few minutes later our server returned with my very large cold beer, and our delicious looking pickles. I loved that they were spears rather than chips. I also loved that they were not greasy at all, yet kind of crispy and flavorful. Delicious! We then ordered our pizza! I wanted to stick with a STANDARD PEPPERONI, while my lunch companion went with the UNDERTOW, which had sausage, pepperoni, fresh garlic and bacon! Both came out shortly after and looked amazing! Mine was particularly cheesy (just how I like it) and I absolutely loved the pepperoni! The

sauce was a little on the sweeter side, so with all the cheesiness, it was a good balance. The crust was golden and crispy. I wouldn’t call it a thin crust, but not super thick either. The Undertow was packed with toppings. It was cut into squares rather than your typical slices, probably to make it easier to eat. The garlic wasn’t too much, a perfect addition to all the meats. The restaurant was very busy by the time we left, so I can only imagine that later in the summer it gets absolutely packed, especially on the weekends. Parking could get tricky, but their website offers a few alternatives to their small parking lot. The area in general is perfect for a fun day, with the Children’s Museum just a up a few stairs, the carousel right outside its doors, and of course, beautiful Lake Michigan just steps away. Silver Beach Pizza lived up to the hype! I’ll definitely be back. As far as being a contender for the area’s best pizza? You’ll just have to wait and see! A SIZZLING GIFT
KEEP HIM CONNECTED
Keep dad in style with all the latest looks with a clothing subscription. You can choose from services that coordinate complete outfits, options for accessories only or providers that select a handful of garments for each shipment. It’s a simple solution for a dad who takes pride in his appearance but never has time to shop or dislikes the shopping experience itself. Pricing varies quite a bit; in some cases dad will need to pay a styling fee while with other services he’ll pay only for the items he keeps.
Gift dad everything he needs to throw an impressive cookout any time he wants with the Father’s Day Gift Package from Omaha Steaks. He’ll be set for summer barbecues with steaks and more on-hand, including two tender filet mignons; two rich and indulgent ribeyes; four robust, juicy burgers and more. The package also includes German Chocolate Cake for a sweet way to end a backyard meal. Find more information and gift packages for dad at omahasteaks.com.
For the dad who’s always tuned in, there’s a way to provide him with entertainment and connectivity while protecting his hearing all at once. Whether he’s using a power saw or mowing the day away, dad can stream his favorite music with the 3M WorkTunes Connect Hearing Protector with Bluetooth wireless technology to make his day both enjoyable and comfortable. With built-in features like high-fidelity audio, comfortable ear cushions and a low-pressure headband, he can even make and take phone calls without missing a beat. GAME FOR GOLF

An avid golfer never tires of golfing gear, so it’s usually a safe bet for gifting. If you’re knowledgeable enough about his preferences, you can always add a new club to his collection. However, there are plenty of other useful gifts a golfer can appreciate, from a sleeve of quality balls to a book about a legendary player. A new set of gloves can improve his grip (and his game) while a new hat or shirt can give him something he can sport on the course.
A CUT ABOVE Practical tools can be the perfect gift, and a pocket knife is such a useful choice that it’s hard to go wrong. For a more sentimental approach, consider a knife with a laser-cut personal message, or go ultra-functional with a multi-tool design. Keep in mind that lesser quality blades may require more frequent sharpening, but they’ll generally do the job just as well as pricier models. Also be conscious of the weight and features like safety catches that may affect comfort and usability. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Butterfly Bush AN EXPLOSION OF BLOOMS & POLLINATOR FAVORITE! BY TERRI SCHWARTZ OF WEDEL’S NURSERY, FLORIST & GARDEN CENTER
W
hat could be more enjoyable than relaxing in your favorite lawn chair or hammock, your sunglasses on and a cool beverage in hand, staring at an enchanting array of colorful butterflies milling around their favorite plant? What could possibly be an easier way to accomplish this vision than by planting a simple butterfly bush? When you plant a butterfly bush, you’ll get a bonus – it’s a favorite plant of many pollinators. Each one is beautiful, easy to grow, and the pollinators they bring in will add another layer of excitement to your floral display. You may want to try more than one variety to invite nature’s visitors to your home for the summer and early fall months each year.
ABOUT BUTTERFLY BUSH
Buddleia davidii, the butterfly bush, is a flowering maniac. It pushes a proliferation of perfumed blooms straight through summer and well into fall, providing nourishment to butterflies all season long. Available in a multitude of sizes & colors ranging from white to pink to red to purple, there are colorful butterfly bushes to match any garden or landscape color scheme. The fragrant, long, spiked panicles are borne in profusion on long, gracefully arching branches that add drama and elegance to the yard. And it really is a butterfly magnet!
22
GROWING BUTTERFLY BUSH
This quick growing, deciduous, woody shrub is winter hardy in zones 5-10. The Kalamazoo area is in zone 6a. In our hardiness range, Buddleia behaves like a herbaceous perennial, dying back to the ground in very cold winters. Cover with cedar mulch 8-12” deep after Thanksgiving to provide extra insulation for the plant. Because butterfly bush blooms on new wood, large varieties (those that get over 4 feet tall) can be cut back in the spring to 12” height. Smaller varieties should be pruned in the spring, removing any dead branches and giving the plant a nice shape. This judicious pruning will stimulate lavish new growth and an abundance of flowers. It will also keep some of the larger varieties at a manageable size, particularly in smaller yards, corners or other confined spaces. Plant your butterfly bush in full sun in just about any type of soil and it will thrive. Don’t worry about fertilizing as over-fertilization can encourage too much leaf growth over flower formation. Deadheading will encourage additional growth and new flower buds to extend the blooming season. Buddleia has a good tolerance for drought once established, but should be carefully watered when young. A good, thick layer of mulch will help maintain soil moisture and keep weeds down to keep the shrub healthy. Just be sure not to use insecticides or pesticides on your butterfly bush or you may be harming the very fluttering fliers you hope to attract.

Summer $avings Make the most of your fashion budget this summer. There are ways to get more, spend less, and save your money!
Janae Thomas is a recent graduate of Western Michigan University with a degree in Fashion Merchandising. She is passionate about writing, fashion, & the empowerment of women. Headshot by Robin Maxim.
SUMMER STAPLES Dollar stores like Five Below, Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree all sell products by quality brands for lower prices, than other stores who sell the same products for much higher prices. Get your summer staples for $1-5 (sandals, flip flops, sunglasses, sun hats, baseball caps, etc.) at these cheaper retailers, and you’ll be able to afford every item in every color.
APPS Several retailers offer discounts and coupons for shoppers that use their apps for purchases. Check out the apps for the stores you shop at this summer to see what savings they offer. Also check out the app called PoshMark. PoshMark users can sell their clothing and accessories that they no longer want, whether new with tags or gently used. You can make extra cash on the app by listing items you no longer love, and even shop for designer pieces for super low prices.
SEMI-ANNUAL SALE STEALS If you’ve always wanted to get your swimsuit at the lingerie leader Victoria’s Secret, but couldn’t afford the high prices you need to shop during the Semi- Annual Sale. It occurs every year in June (and December). Call your local VS store on June 1st to keep track of when the Semi-Annual Sale takes place for 2019, so that you can take a more expensive swimsuit home for a low price. By shopping during this sale, you’ll be able to afford more than one swimsuit and even a cover up!
BOOTH BUYS Great summer weather allows you to step out of the stores and shop the booths at flea markets, festivals, carnivals, and art shows that will come to town this summer. You’ll be able to explore clothing and accessories from different cultures with rare fabrics, beading, stitching, and designs for a few dollars.
SUMMER SALES Focus on taking advantage of the summer clearance and sale racks. Clearance and sale racks can be messy and require a lot of untangling. Pick a day and take the time to really go through them! You’ll find cheap prices on things you need! Never buy clearance or sale items without trying them on first. Items on sale and clearance are usually not returnable so, always try before you buy. You won’t want to get stuck with items that don’t fit and can’t be returned. Don’t risk wasting money by not trying anything on first!
