Is there anything sweeter? It’s the perfect weather for swimming in Michigan’s many lakes, rivers and streams. It’s the best time to pack a picnic lunch and head out for the beach. Even if you have to work, you can always grab a sandwich and have an impromptu dinner at the park. Summer is the perfect time to think outside the box and find some inventive ways to really enjoy life.
We all know that summer, no matter how much we try to savor it, never lasts long enough. Perhaps it’s time to take a moment to see if you are having the summer of your dreams. Don’t forget that, not too many months ago, all that yucky white stuff on the ground (in April, even!) had you daydreaming of beautiful, warm weather to do all the things. What were those summer bucket list items? Do you remember? Take stock of how many of those things you’ve actually done, make an actual paper list of all the rest and... get started crossing them off! Our team has been hard at work on this July edition. We’ve included some great “Stay-cation” ideas for all things local (and adventurous) for the whole family. We are so fortunate to live in Southwest Michigan, with an incredible variety of activities available to people of all ages and interests.
Happy 4th of July! I am so thankful to live in this wonderful country, where I enjoy so many daily freedoms that others are not as privileged to have. I am free to live my life as I see fit, pursue my dreams and speak my mind. I am truly blessed and I hope that you feel blessed, too.
Signing off to go fishing!
- Darlene
"In the summer, the days were long, stretching into each other. Out of school, everything was on pause and yet happening at the same time, this collection of weeks when anything was possible." - Sarah Dessen, Along for the Ride "At these times, the things that troubled her seemed far away and unimportant: all that mattered was the hum of the bees and the chirp of birdsong, the way the sun gleamed on the edge of a blue wildflower, the distant bleat and clink of grazing goats." - Alison Croggon, The Naming "Summer, after all, is a time when wonderful things can happen to quiet people. For those few months, you're not required to be who everyone thinks you are, and that cut-grass smell in the air and the chance to dive into the deep end of a pool give you a courage you don't have the rest of the year. You can be grateful and easy, with no eyes on you, and no past. Summer just opens the door and lets you out." - Deb Caletti, Honey, Baby, Sweetheart

“OUT OF OFFICE” Response Messages •
State that you’re out of the office and when you will return.
tanding out in your career may be as simple as handling your email and telephone properly. Particularly during the summer months, your use of up-to-date automatic email responses and telephone answering messages should be in full swing as vacations and conferences fill your calendar.
•
Using an auto response system effectively allows you to take that much-needed break or attend an off-site conference without needing to check your phone every five minutes. It also establishes the fact that you’re not ignoring your responsibilities back at the office. By giving people the right information, your business and professional obligations can continue while you’re away.
Next, and very important, don’t promise a return message or call for a date earlier than you’ll be able to make the promised reply. Consider your re-entry time carefully and then deliver on the date you promise a return reply.
So, what to say? When developing email and phone auto replies, keep your message short, professional and simple: SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN

•
Give people someone to contact if they need assistance before you return.
Don’t leave run-on messages about why you’re not available or brag that you’re off on a luxury spa retreat!
Finally, to avoid one of the biggest annoyances of all, remember to turn the email auto responder off and re-record your phone message when you return to the office!

TRISH KERN
Find Your Adventure
T
rish Kern has always been an allAmerican girl. Born in Indiana and raised in Three Rivers, Michigan she spent her childhood caring for and showing horses and was always surrounded by pets. After high school, she was off to Albion College where she met her college sweetheart, Greg. They were married in 1989 and spent 27 happy years raising their sons, Lance and Ryan, while Trish worked in the automotive and aerospace industries. In 2005, she joined the education sector. Trish's most recent career move was joining the staff of Van Buren Tech in 2016.
Photography by Grace Photography
In 2016, Trish and Greg downsized the family home and moved to a lovely little lake in Lawrence with their English Labrador Retrievers, Oakley and Gracie. In the fall of that year, life would throw the Kern family an unimaginable curve ball. Greg was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer. Greg fought hard, but the cancer was swift and he passed away in
December 2016, two months before Trish’s 50th birthday. At a time when most married couples are making plans for the next phase of their lives, Trish faced a pivotal decision: withdraw from the world, or immerse herself in it. Surrounded by her tribe of family and friends, Trish made the decision to try one new thing each month of her 50th year on Earth. It started slow, but surrounded by love, support and ideas, Trish’s quest to find something new seemed to ratchet up a notch each month.
In a time where she could have curled up & indulged in her grief, Trish found her adventure & began building a life that she loved.

Over the past few years she has embarked on multiple adventures which include: skydiving with her son (fulfilling a dream he wanted to do with his dad), traveling to Zion Nation Park and hiking Angel’s Landing, experiencing a South Haven sunset while flying a Cessna 150, and traveling to White River Light Station to see the 1878 shipwreck of the LC Woodruff that hadn’t been exposed since 1974.
Get lost in nature, enjoy the path less traveled and give in to spontaneity and your inner 12 year old. Take pictures of everything. Talk to strangers. Do things you’re scared to do.
In addition to her travels, Trish found another way to embrace her adventurous spirit. She purchased a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and joined the Wicked Jeeps Club. What started out as a way to get out, meet folks and enjoy nature quickly turned into an obsession. “I have learned to wrench on my Jeep and have gained the technical driving skills to fill my adventure bucket.” As her tool box grows and her Jeep expands, so does her confidence. Trish’s favorite weekends start with a full tank of gas and a sense of adventure. She loves to jump in the Jeep, load up the dogs and find hidden gems of less populated parks and beaches. Looking for beach glass, geocaching, hiking, enjoying a great meal or just hanging out in the hammock fill the best days. You can often find Trish in St. Joe or South Haven where she loves to walk the shoreline, climb dunes, check out lighthouses, visit unique shops and indulge in amazing food. “How lucky are we to have Lake Michigan in our back yard?" Trish encourages the readers of Women’s LifeStyle to travel to places that inspire awe and recharge your soul. Get lost in nature, enjoy the path less traveled and give in to spontaneity and your inner 12 year old. Take pictures of everything. Talk to strangers. Do things you’re scared to do. “Life is fragile and short. In the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working or mowing your lawn, so stop making excuses and get out there and make your life the best story.”

At the end of the day, Trish reflects on how the human soul can rebound and react positively to adversity. “I am most proud of how my sons were able to overcome loss and develop character, compassion and strength. You come to realize you only have so many days on this Earth and you need to make each one count. Our family has made the shift to focus less on the material things and instead focus on making memories. It’s the moment you understand you might not be able to control what happens in your life – but you can control how you react to it.”
This summer, take a page out of Trish’s book. Get outside and find your adventurous spirit while exploring our beautiful Michigan.

Top5 Hydrangea Plants Your Landscape Needs BY TERRI SCHWARTZ OF WEDEL’S NURSERY, FLORIST & GARDEN CENTER The popularity of hydrangeas continues to skyrocket as hardier, showier varieties are developed every year. Their versatility in sun to shade and bold blooms make them must-have shrubs for every garden. To make your buying decision easier, let’s narrow down the diverse selection to the top five hydrangeas, according to Ronda, “the hydrangea expert” at Wedel’s Garden Center. Ronda was not able to pick one favorite, so these are not in any particular order.
Blooms emerge creamy-white and age to a vivid red for lots of summer color. It makes a great cut flower, fresh or dried, and can be used as a hedge, specimen, or incorporated into flower gardens and foundation plantings. Exceptionally hardy - low maintenance and easy to grow – it’s the perfect plant for "black thumbs." Fire Light has been selected as the 2019 hydrangea of the Year.
Little Lime Hydrangea is a prolific, reliable bloomer that is quite hardy. While maintaining its short stature of 3-5’ tall and wide, it really packs a visual punch in the garden. In summer, lime green blooms open on strong stems – no drooping here. As it ages, rich pink coloring emerges to prolong the show through fall.
Little Lime hydrangea is small enough to grow in containers and also stands out as a bold mass planting. Its bright bloom coloration makes it an excellent choice for cut flower gardens and can be used fresh or dried. This reliable performer blooms on new wood, so a quick trim in late winter or early spring will encourage fresh growth and an abundance of buds. Like most hardy hydrangeas, it does best in full sun or part shade.
Fire Light Hydrangea
Summer Crush Hydrangea With a profusion of big raspberry red or neon purple blooms, Summer Crush brings floral quality blooms to your garden or patio container. Not only is it drop-dead gorgeous, but it is compact so you get a neat, tidy look throughout the summer. Fill a patio container with Summer Crush for a stunning look all season long. Summer Crush will make your outdoor living space the talk of the neighborhood.
Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangea The
Incrediball Blush Hydrangeas are beloved
for their stout stems and massive blooms. This hydrangea combines the rock-solid reliability of the classic “Annabelle” hydrangea with the improved stem strength, bodacious blooms, and enormous flowers of the Incrediball series. Enjoy these fabulous silvery-pink blooms every year. This species of hydrangea is native to North America.
enormous flower heads are a blend of vanilla and strawberry, held upright on red stems. Flowers emerge creamy white in mid-summer, change to pink as the night temperatures drop and finally turn strawberry red. New blooms emerge as older blooms change color, giving the plant a multicolored effect in late summer and early fall. The red coloring lasts at least 3-4 weeks. Plants grow upright, and then cascade later in the season. Excellent for fresh cut and dried flower arrangements.
OOPS – that’s six hydrangeas you absolutely need so far! But wait – we didn’t mention Twist-n-Shout Hydrangea yet, and we LOVE Tiny Tuff Stuff Hydrangea and… now you can see what the hardest part about hydrangeas is – choosing the ones you like best!
This beauty is reblooming - new flowers are produced through frost. It makes an excellent landscape plant and is loved for its cut flowers, both fresh and dried.
Double Delights Wedding Gown Hydrangea
Little Lime was selected as the 2016 landscape plant of the year.
Fire Light Hydrangea is the easy-to-grow, reliable panicle hydrangea, that is loved for its huge, full flower heads and sturdy, strong stems.

This exceptional hybrid features fully double blooms, notably strong stems, a well-mounded form. and lush dark green foliage. You’ll enjoy the blooms spring through fall. Each flower cluster transforms into an exquisite, pristine white bridal bouquet as a stunning outer ring of large blooms first unfolds, followed by lovely smaller inner blooms.

T O P TIP S F O R
Great Summer Skin BY SARA ARUNDEL
1. PROTECT YOUR SKIN, SPF IS A MUST!
Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from the dangers of sun exposure. Sunburns and sun damage most commonly come to mind when thinking of sun protection, however basking in the sun without the proper physical sunscreen puts you at higher risk of developing melanoma. Physical sunscreens are “reflectors." Their active ingredients include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as physical blockers. These minerals form a protective barrier on the skin and reflect harmful UV rays before they make contact with the skin’s surface.
2. HYDRATE - H2O IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!
Water is one of the basic needs for human life and with increased summer temperatures and outdoor activities comes increased water loss—through sweating and evaporation—as your body works to stay cool. Staying well hydrated can help maintain your skin's elasticity and combat the appearance of wrinkles.
3. PROTECT YOUR LIPS
Proper hydration also helps to facilitate protection on your lips against UV rays. The application of a lip balm with SPF is necessary all summer long! We recommend Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm from Eminence Organics. A natural SPF15 defends dry lips against harmful UV exposure, while soothing rosehip oil relieves dryness and rejuvenating lavender restores softness.
4. HYDRATE YOUR SKIN WITH A LOTION
Skipping a body lotion or facial moisturizer in the summer will break down healthy skin
10
July 2019
barrier over time. Use a lightweight lotion on your body to hydrate in the summer months. One of our favorite ingredients is Stone Crop: hydrating for uneven skin tones; helps to reduce the appearance of age spots and skin blotches.
5. EXFOLIATE
Exfoliating is essential for removing dead skin cells, encouraging cellular turn over and revealing a bright and smooth complexion. Sugar scrubs, salt scrubs and dry brushing are all great options all summer long!
6. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET
Exfoliating isn't just great for our skin, our feet need regular exfoliating as well, to ensure cellular turnover and oxygenation. We recommend regular pedicures and keeping a pumice stone in the shower for quick access to exfoliation.
7. CLEANSE
You must cleanse your skin! Even if you don't wear makeup or you feel like it's clean enough, cleansing your skin is key to preventing breakouts and avoiding a build up of sweat, dirt and debris. We recommend a gentle cleanser, twice daily. Some of our favorites are Stone Crop Gel Wash, Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser and the Wild Flower Cleansing Balm from Eminence Organic Skin Care.
8. MINIMAL MAKEUP
The summer time is the perfect time to "let your skin breathe" and ditch the makeup or switch to a light mineral makeup. Of course, we want to wear an SPF during the summer months however with increased temperatures our skin is prone to more oil. Keeping it clear of bulky products will ensure a smooth and glowing complexion!
9. HEALTHY FOOD
Strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon are all staples at the meal table in the summer time and luckily, have amazing benefits for our skin! Lycopene—the compound that gives tomatoes and watermelon their red hue— helps protect skin against sun exposure. Watermelon is super hydrating and cucumbers nourish skin by delivering a lot of water, as well as some vitamin C and caffeic acid—two compounds that may help protect against skin-damaging UV rays. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body make collagen, which helps skin stay plump & wrinkle-free, and it can also help prevent & heal UV-related skin damage.
10. GET A FACIAL!
Facials are the key ingredient for healthy skin and a glowing complexion. Aside from promoting relaxation and self-care, facials include noticeable improvements to your skin tone, texture and appearance. During the summer, exfoliating and hydration after sun exposure go a long way in maintaining skin health. Sara Arundel has been in the spa industry for over 15 years and opened FACES Skin Care & Massage in April of 2012. She has a passion for creating a space of relaxation, healing and premium skin care & body services free of chemicals, & harsh ingredients.

In the Bag
What Are Your Essential Beach Bag Items?
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Time to get outside and hit the gorgeous beaches of Southwest Michigan. We reached out and asked the readers of Women’s LifeStyle Magazine, what is always in your beach bag? Here are just a few great ideas to make your day at the beach a total breeze.
I like to take a king size sheet and use it for a beach blanket. It is cheap, easy to clean and provides plenty of space for everyone to enjoy soaking up the sun.
– AIMEE H. I always pack an oblong Tupperware container (one large enough to fit your entire foot). When we arrive at the beach I fill the container with water and put it at the edge of our beach blanket. A quick dunk in the water and sand is washed off of feet and kept off of your blanket.
– EMMA T. Hair Stuff! My hair can quickly become a big mess at the beach, so I like stock my beach bag with leave-in conditioner, a Wet Brush and plenty of hair ties. Hair ties are a must while I’m swimming and laying in the sun. After I am done swimming for the day, I like to apply a little leave-in conditioner, brush out the tangles and let my hair air dry.
– KELLIE A. A little sun goes a long way for me! I make sure to keep plenty of sunscreen in my beach bag. I like to have a good waterproof spray sunscreen, lip balm and an after sun aloe with me whenever I’m at the beach.
– AMANDA G. I don’t leave the house without my large Yeti Rambler bottle. You can fill it with ice and 64 oz of water and after a full day at the beach you still have ice cold water.
After many years of wishing I would have planned better, I never leave home without a full change of clothes (don’t forget the underthings!) so I don’t have to explore town or drive home in my soggy swimsuit. I also love to throw a cute coverup in my beach bag for those times I want to walk around town a bit, but I’m not ready to leave the beach for the day.
– MONICA H. Earphones, a great playlist and my copy of Women’s LifeStyle Magazine. I can’t do a day at the beach without great music and something great to read.
– KATIE B. An airline pillow is one of the best things I have in my beach bag. They are amazing for resting your face while getting some sun on your back.
– TIA K. I pack a small makeup bag with a little cash, keys and my phone. I tuck that bag in my larger bag so I can easily find those items that always seem to fall to the very bottom of my bag.
– JENN C.
– KAYLA M. Protein bars, trail mix and fresh fruit are a must for my beach bag. I don’t enjoy leaving the beach for meals or bringing half of my kitchen out to cook at the beach, so I like to throw some filling snacks in my beach bag. Just enough to curb my hunger during the day. Then we love to head into town for a nice supper to cap off our beach day.
– DANA B. I’m big on the little things. I like to stock my beach bag with baby wipes, hand sanitizer, a small first aid kit and some disposable grocery bags to use as a trash bag.
– CHRISTI P.

VINTAGE CAMPERS Reimagining a Great American Pastime BY ERICA SHIER
T
he world has always been divided into two distinct factions; those who love to camp and those who would rather spend an entire afternoon at the dentist. For some, sleeping in tents, cooking meals over the campfire and communing with mother nature is the pinnacle of the human experience. For others, if there’s not a clean bed, air conditioning and access to a sparkling pool in the mix, it cannot be credibly called a vacation. These two groups, it seemed, would forever be separated by an uncrossable divide. When all hope seemed lost, a solution to this impasse arrived on the scene and those who swore never to set foot in a campsite began to think again. Glamping, short for glamorous camping, has become all the rage in the United States (and beyond) in the last few years as people sought to combine their love of creature comforts with a desire to experience the natural world. One of the most interesting approaches to this reimagining of camping has been the trend towards rehabbing vintage campers to make them more appealing and functional for the modern family.
14
July 2019
Sondra Phillips, owner of SKP Designs, was on vacation one summer when she saw a Shasta reissue of the Airflyte vintage camper. It was brand new but had a distinctly retro vibe. Sondra was convinced that rehabbing an actual antique camper would be more cost effective, as well as more authentic. Even better, doing it herself would allow her to personalize it in a way that would be impossible were she to buy new. Thus, began her hunt to find the perfect candidate for her exciting new project. Her search soon brought her to Craigslist where, in the fall of 2015, she found a thirteen foot, 1960 “Go Tag Along,” (pictured above), that had been gutted. It boasted a new Masonite interior and had a new plywood floor already installed but was otherwise an empty canvas for an artist like Sondra. She dove in headfirst, with the planning and execution of this remodeling project taking a mere three months from start to finish. She chose to hire out the cabinetry work
to The Woodsmiths and have the cushions fabricated in Indiana, moves that saved her a good amount of work and had her camping in style in no time. The project was a labor of love. There were a few unexpected challenges, including the fact that painting in such a small space proved to be quite difficult. “It was almost impossible to get into the proper position to have paint make contact with the walls,” Sondra shares. “It was like Twister. I got a lot of paint in my hair.” The “Go Tag Along” turned out beautifully, with a vibrant color palette and whimsical patterns throughout. The retro vibe is unmistakable, imparting a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to resist. The kitchen,
WomensLifeStyleKazoo.com
while only five feet wide, is functional and fabulous, outfitted with a mix of antiques and more modern finds from Target. Sondra loves to take it on the road, with weekends spent at Wilderness State Park, camping in Alpena at “Tow Jam” and visiting a cousin in South Haven. This little camper is also a hard worker. It doubles as SKP Designs’ trade show booth at the Michigan Restaurant Show and has been the perfect marketing tool at venues like The Gilmore Car Barns Spectacular Car Show and The Vicksburg Car Show. It’s even made an appearance at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Annual Art Fair. FOR THOSE CONSIDERING TAKING ON A VINTAGE CAMPER REMODEL THEMSELVES, Sondra offers nothing but encouragement. Her best advice? “Jump right in! It is VERY fun. It’s a great distraction from the everyday things that consume our lives." Just beware, though. This is a hobby that can be a little addicting. Not only is Sondra putting the finishing touches on a 1956 “Spartan
Imperial Mansion,” pictured above, that will serve as SKP’s lakeshore office this summer, she’s working on a “Little Gem” vintage camper for her daughter. Affectionately dubbed “The Thrifty Kitty,” it will boast two twin beds for sleeping comfort. She’s also slowly working on a 1940s “Vagabond” camper that her boyfriend gifted her and a “catering” or “bistro” camper for the Michigan restaurant show. There are another four in the works as well, proving that vintage camper fever is definitely in Sondra’s blood. If you’re in the market for a vintage camper but haven’t a handy bone in your body, there may be good news on the horizon for you. Once Sondra has completed a decent number of campers and feels she has perfected the process, she is open to rehabbing campers for her clients. She wants to be able to do enough of these projects that she can nail down the time frame, costs, methods and options before she offers the service. Considering how many campers she is currently working on, that happy day may not be too far off.

Let's Call it POST NESTING
B
eing on the north-end of fifty, I have had a front-row seat to witness friends embraced the new phase in their lives that doesn’t include cheering on their kids from the soccer bleachers. These couples have fulfilled their parental duties of keeping their children alive while growing up, and through the dreaded teen years. More than once I have muttered the words, “God turns our teenage children into jerks so that we’re glad when they finally leave the nest.” (Disclaimer: I usually replace jerk with another word). TV commercials feature mature men gulping enhancement pills on their way out for a nighton-the-town with their significant other, and couples biking down mountainsides as their adult children wonder why their parents aren’t home waiting for their phone call. It’s heralded as a time of rebirth for parents who spent more than one sleepless night holding their children as they crouched in front of the toilet during flu season. But, what if the Empty Nest phase for adults who have raised their children doesn’t reflect the happy images we see on TV commercials? While these commercials want us to believe that all mature couples are walking down the beach with their Golden Retriever, I have also seen friends go down a very different path after seeing their children off to college or their new apartment. As they look wistfully at the empty bedroom, they then look at their

significant-other and realize that they spent the last eighteen years with their eyes off the ball. While children are supposed to leave the nest, what happens when the marriage takes a backseat to child-rearing?
Empty Nesters —the term, itself, reflects a negative connotation. Not always, but generally, relationships start out with a couple learning to trust and lean on each other before adding children to the mix, and the dynamics obviously change, but sacrificing for our children cannot come at the cost of putting our relationships and our well-being on the backburner.
ARE YOU GAME? HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT… •• Downsizing - do you still need that four-bedroom house with three baths? The children coming back home to visit will survive if you downsize to that cute ranch home with 1½ baths. Your bank account will also thank you. •• Renting skis - Or perhaps you’ve thought about trying out snow-shoeing, golf or bowling. I hear pickleball is a thing. Why not give it a try? •• Buying a ukulele - We’ve all been there… “I wish I had taken guitar or piano lessons as a kid.” What’s your excuse now?
The point is, now is the time to do what, perhaps you didn’t have time for when you were checking homework assignments. Here’s a thought… Let’s celebrate Post Nesting.
Post Nesters —while this is just a new spin on an old expression, I like this positive definition of what should be an exciting time for people who are just getting started in life. Let’s celebrate this new chapter by tackling that new hobby, job, or passion that we claimed we didn’t have time for while we were packing diaper bags and lunchboxes.

STAY AND PLAY IN THE
I
n Michigan, you are always within six miles of a body of water. And in a state like ours, it only makes sense to take full advantage of the beautiful scenes and activities it offers. Visiting Michigan’s different waters creates spectacular trips to enjoy, new memories, stories and stirs pride in us for our beautiful state. Some of Michigan’s extravagant water aspects include activities that may surprise you.
Waters of Michigan
CLIFF JUMPING*
This new and interesting water activity Michigan has to offer will spike adrenaline, leaving visitors craving more! Cliff jumping is an activity you might not be aware of this summer that offers a whole new area of adventure to both natives and tourists!
Blackrocks | Marquette, MI
This is a 10-15-foot drop into Lake Superior; an excellent jump for first timers. Surrounding the jump are access points to the water and open areas to sit and enjoy the rocky landscape.
Canyon River Falls | L’Anse, MI
This jump is a favorite, especially for hikers. It takes some hiking to arrive to the spot but is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Jumping off the cliff is a height to spike adrenaline tucked away in shaded trees with a small waterfall.
Blackrocks
Tahquamenon Falls
BEACHES
Dead River Falls | Marquette, MI
Warren Dunes and Silver Lake
WATERFALLS
Torch Lake, Higgins Lake, and Kitch-iti-kipi
Some of the most beautiful, relaxing gems of this state are its waterfalls. They’re tucked away in Michigan’s greenery and offer their relaxing sounds of rushing water and mesmerizing movements for eyes. It’s no surprise Michigan is home to 200+ waterfalls, which makes it a perfect location for adventures. These trips are perfect no matter the season because their beauty never changes.
Memorial Falls | Munising, MI
July 2019
Trees surround this waterfall, offering a canopy of green and the area includes a pond, dam, and trails. However, this waterfall is the highlight of the area as the water spills down like a large fountain.
This rock quarry has crystal clear water that enables you to see over 100 feett deep. Swimmers can jump from the quarry edge or use the nearby rope swing.
Bond falls is a magnificent waterfall with the surrounding area serving their well-known ice cream and Paulding Lights legend. Bond Falls is also wheelchair accessible.

Emily Reed is a student at GVSU studying Writing & minoring in Political Science. In college, she has been a member of the Laker Marching Band and the GV Running Club. After graduation, Emily looks to be an editor while writing young adult fiction to inspire young writers.
This is the second largest waterfall to the east of the Mississippi, the first being Niagara. This is a great place to enjoy kayaking and watch 50,000 gallons of “root beer” water drop into the river.
Finally, it’s no surprise we’re talking about beaches and lakes; they’re Michigan’s statement! But every one of them is different. Taking trips to visit the different lakes can open your eyes to see how extravagant Michigan is and how vastly different each part of the state is. Most of these beaches and lakes have areas for camping, hiking, and history. They are the perfect place to relax, enjoy friends and family, and simply take in Michigan’s wonders.
This jump is 45 feet making it perfect for adrenaline junkies and hikers as it requires an enjoyable mile hike to the high jumping destination! This jump is more for professionals due to some structures under the water.
Bond Falls
Tahquamenon Falls | Luce County, MI
Memorial Falls is a smaller waterfall that enables visitors to view it from top, below, and behind. While visiting this area, make sure to check out the many other falls Munising has to offer like Wagner, Scott, and Horseshoe Falls.
These beaches are home to large sand dunes. At Warren, you’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the crystal blue lake and Silver Lake offers miles of sand to explore. Many will bring hammocks for the view and dune buggies for the fun!
These lakes are a sight to see as home to some of the clearest waters in Michigan and the world! Kitch-iti-kipi is not a lake, but Michigan’s largest freshwater spring with translucent water leading to its emerald bottom.
Lake Michigan Overlook | Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
This magnificent dune is 450 feet tall that leads right down to Lake Michigan. This dune also includes a lookout deck that allows you to take in the overpowering largeness of Lake Michigan.
Walloon Lake and Glen Lake
Walloon Lake is known for its beautiful turquoise water while Glen Lake is one of the bluest lakes in Michigan. At these lakes, you’ll feel as if you’ve left Michigan without doing so and enjoy Michigan’s different colors! * Cliff jumping can result in serious injury. Farm to table Favorites
Fresh Cherry Chicken Salad
5 cups of shredded cooked chicken (rotisserie chicken works great)
½ cup chopped pecans
1 small Vidalia onion, minced
2 ribs celery, diced
1 ½ cups pitted, halved Michigan sweet cherries
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Serve on a bed of fresh greens or a flaky croissant. Pair with pasta salad and fruit for a perfect summer supper.
1 cup mayonnaise (I prefer Hellmann’s)
Salt & pepper to taste
Grilled Mexican Street Corn Salad
6 ears of corn, husked
6 Tbsp mayonnaise
3 Tbsp sour cream
4 Tbsp fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp ground cumin
3/4 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup crumbled cotija cheese
1/2 red onion, minced
1/3-1/2 bunch cilantro, chopped
Heat a grill to medium heat. Add the corn, turning occasionally until slightly charred on each side.
Remove from the grill and allow to cool for a few minutes. Holding the corn by the small end, cut off all the kernels. Place the kernels in a big bowl and add all remaining ingredients. Fold gently with a rubber spatula, seasoning with additional salt as needed.
Serve slightly warm, room temperature or cold.
Triple Berry Cream Cheese Pie Crust: 60 vanilla wafer cookies, crushed
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup blueberries
½ cup melted butter ¼ cup sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, combine crushed cookies, butter and sugar. Mix well and press into a 9-inch pie pan, covering the bottom and sides.
Bake crust for 8-11 minutes, until golden brown. Set aside to cool.
Filling: 1 (8 oz) package of cream cheese, softened
½ cup confectioner’s sugar
1 ¼ cup heavy cream
1 cup strawberries, sliced 1 cup blackberries 1 cup raspberries
¾ cups sugar
Whip cream cheese, confectioner’s sugar and heavy cream until light and fluffy (around 5 minutes). Add vanilla extract to the mixture. Let filling chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Pour chilled filling in the pie crust and chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. When ready to serve, add berries to a mixing bowl and toss with ¾ cups sugar (coat fruit). Top pie with fruit and serve.

GREAT WAYS TO
Beat the Heat WITHOUT
Breaking the Bank We have been wishing for this glorious hot weather for months and now that it is here, we are all looking for a little relief without pushing our air conditioning and our utility bills to the max. As we step into the long hot days of summer, here are some ideas for beating the heat without breaking the bank.
GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN
One of the fastest ways to spike the thermostat is firing up your oven. A quick and easy way to beat the heat is to avoid using your oven and stovetop as much as possible. You don’t want to stand over a hot stove to prepare a hot meal for your sweaty family. Create summer meal plans that revolve around cool salads, refreshing fruits/ veggies and grilled entrees.
SMART SNACKING
Cold beverages and snacks help keep everyone in the family cool during the hottest days of the year. Keep your refrigerator and freezer stocked with cold water, seasonal fruits and vegetables, ice cream and popsicles. Ice cold watermelon just might be the perfect treat to beat the heat, with frozen seedless grapes coming in a close second. Of course, fresh Michigan cherries and blueberries are amazing options too! HACK YOUR HOME
Make sure you have adjusted your ceiling fans to push air down as opposed to pulling it upward (as most fans are set to do in the winter months.) Make sure your windows and doors have good seals and aren’t letting cool air escape your home. Finally, draw your shades or curtains to prevent direct sunlight from entering windows as it can cause a significant spike in home temperature.
HIT THE GREAT OUTDOORS
One of the best parts of Michigan in the summer is the abundance of water. When the temperatures become unbearable, gather up your family and hit the beach, splash pad or pool. We have some of the country’s best beaches in Southwest Michigan and many of those beaches have additional activities for the family, including some pretty awesome splash pads.
Heather Dombos is a Florida girl who brings a little sass & southern charm to everything she does. This wife, dog mom, and closet Trekkie loves reading, hiking, long days on the beach and exploring Michigan.
CHILL OUT
Another great way to beat the heat without having to send your energy costs skyrocketing is to take the family out to enjoy an airconditioned venue. Afternoon matinees at the local movie theater, browsing at the mall, checking out a local museum or the library are all great ways to stay cool during the hottest parts of the day.
CAR CARE
We have all heard it a thousand times, but we see the stories every year. Someone leaves their child or pet in the car for “just a minute.” In the summer heat cars are inescapable death traps for small children and animals. No matter how short your errand, DO NOT leave your child or your pet in your car. Take your child into the establishment with you for the errand and just leave your dog at home. Odds are, your dog would much rather be napping at home than in a scorching hot car while you run errands.

Vacationing for the
Mind, Body and Spirit! W
hether you’re traveling around the world this summer or planning a “stay-cation,” a getaway can do wonders for your mental health. Taking a break from your normal routine can leave you feeling energized, creative, and more focused when you return. Even the smallest adventures help us re-prioritize, think differently, and appreciate the little things in life. So, while getting a tan and enjoying a tasty beverage might be at the top of the itinerary, here are some additional benefits to taking a vacation this summer, or anytime throughout the year!
A Change of Scenery
Many of us are stuck on autopilot. We do the same thing every day and rarely change up our routine, let alone scenery. This can make you feel trapped, bored or unmotivated. Exploring a new place, even just 30 minutes away, can help snap us out of this rut. While getting out of your normal environment is most beneficial, there’s research to suggest that just looking at pictures of new places, rearranging the furniture, or buying a new piece of artwork can have some of the same positive mental health benefits!

Reduces Stress
With deadlines, schedules, and seemingly bottomless inboxes our lives can feel overwhelming and stressful. We get home and are immediately reminded of all the things we have to do just to maintain our lives - laundry, dishes, mowing, and more! When we travel, this all gets left behind. People often wonder how they have so much time on vacation. It’s because every waking moment isn’t consumed by a task! Vacuuming isn’t even an option! Unfortunately, our phones often travel with us, so it’s very important to make a concerted effort to not use your phone for work or productivity. Let work know you won’t be checking email while you’re gone and put up an away message. Temporarily delete or move apps that steal your time while you’re on vacation. Do what you need to do to stay present in the moment while traveling, and not go down a stress rabbit hole!
Sustained Mood Booster
Just like the bronze glow you might acquire from a vacation the mental health benefits stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
You’ve gained a new experience and created new memories. Maybe you’ve tried something you never thought you would or had a meaningful conversation with a stranger that helped you see life differently. At the very least, you have photos. Print them or save them as your screensaver for a few weeks after your trip. They will instantly take you back. Just a 30 second video of a lapping shoreline can evoke all our senses and relax us during a stressful day. Remember, you don’t have to travel far to get the added mental health boosts of a trip! Michigan summers are one of a kind. With sand dunes, forests, and a shoreline for days just a quick trip to South Haven or St. Joe can help you feel mentally refreshed and ready to tackle another Monday.

How to Make a Decision
L
BY ASHLEY CARTER YOUNGBLOOD, LMSW, LMFT, CMHIMP
ife can be hard and hindsight always seems 20/20. So, how should one make a decision, anyway? And, not just any decision, but a healthy one.
your truth at this time given that the loved one may be dealing with a terminal illness and you, instead, want to focus on creating positive memories.
YOUR TWO OPTIONS
As an influential book by Lynn Grodzki reminded me, we can make decisions in one of two ways: out of love or out of fear. So, whether it’s staying with your current unhealthy partner because you are afraid to be alone, not getting another degree because you are worried you will fail, or choosing to embark on a new business venture because it is what you truly love to do, these decisions are either made out of love or out of fear. The challenge is that fear often feels more powerful. Therefore, when considering a decision, it may help to get in touch with your values and intuition to see how the potential of a certain decision “feels” to you. Do you advocate for yourself by confronting a loved one who mistreats you even though that conversation will be uncomfortable? It may be uncomfortable but do you believe that it is important to speak up when harm is being done, no matter the cost? If so, such an action may be able to be done out of love for yourself. On the other hand, your values may teach you that it is more important to focus on achieving inner peace and forgiveness with a situation. This may mean that and you are willing to compromise not speaking

July 2019
“We can make decisions in one of two ways: out of love or out of fear.
“ DON’T DO ANYTHING UNLESS YOU HAVE TO”
These wise words are constantly repeated by my meditation teacher. I find them to be particularly helpful when exploring how to make a decision. Could I live with myself or sleep at night if I did or didn’t do something? Could I get by with not doing it? If so, consider letting that opportunity pass you by. However, if you keep coming back to a decision. If it haunts you and your value system aligns with it, it may that you have to do something. If so, maybe it’s time to take that leap of faith from fear to love!
EVALUATE YOUR NEEDS
Making a decision is also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on your own needs. Do you need a raise because your expenses have increased? Do you need to not go to every family function because it causes more stress than is helpful? If so, remind yourself that your needs matter too – emotional, financial, spiritual, sexual, or otherwise. Give yourself permission to make a decision that isn’t “selfish” but is “selfreflective” of your own needs. We cannot truly be present with others if we are not making healthy decisions for ourselves. So, listen to your gut and ask things like: “Is this something I need to do?”, “Is this something I want to do?”, or “Is this something that I feel inclined to do simply because it feels like an obligation?” If something does feel like an obligation, is it an obligation that you want to have based on your values (e.g. taking care of an ailing father) or is it simply something that you have been doing out of habit but don’t really love (e.g. getting your bachelor’s degree)? Give yourself time to think. Give yourself permission to choose. Ask: It is love or fear? At the end of the day, I doubt any of us wants to live our life out of fear. So, don’t. RESTAURANT REVIEW
402 Phoenix St, South Haven, MI | HOURS: Fri - Sat 11:30AM–11PM Sun - Th 11:30AM–10PM A summer afternoon of shopping and eating along the lakeshore always sounds like a good idea to me. So, after walking around downtown South Haven and doing a little shopping, I decided it was time to eat! I had visited the restaurant, Taste, about three years ago and had an amazing meal so I figured it was a good decision. Taste serves a wide range of foods, with a large portion of their menu dedicated to small plates. I LOVE this concept because you can order a variety of items and try a little bit of everything! The restaurant is neither large nor small, but somewhere in between and offers a small patio out front where you can have a great view of boats coming and going from the marina to Lake Michigan. On the day of our visit, it was raining so we opted to sit inside.
TOMATO & MOZZARELLA
Our server was delightful and knowledgeable. We asked how many small plates she would recommend, and she said around 1-2 per person but that two would probably be better. She also went through the specials that day for us. One of the things Taste does is offer a different Macaroni and Cheese each week. When I checked out their Instagram (@ tastesouthhaven) I saw some super creative macs, like Breakfast Mac (topped with eggs, sausage and hash brown), mac and cheese topped with pulled pork and potato chips, chicken enchilada mac, and many more! The week I visited, they offered a SEAFOOD MAC AND CHEESE. I knew when I heard that there was lobster, crab and shrimp that this was absolutely going to be one of our small plates. We also ended up ordering another special they had, WAGYU BEEF seared medium rare with pureed cauliflower and crispy onions. On top of that deliciousness, we went with the SWEET & SPICY SHRIMP, the KOREAN CHICKEN BBQ and, lastly, a cold plate of TOMATO AND MOZZARELLA. We were hungry so we let our server know it was ok to bring the plates out as they were ready. First out was the Tomato and Mozzarella. It was a beautiful, bright plate. The tomatoes were roasted, and topped with small balls of fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and a balsamic reduction. It was a delicious refreshing plate. The perfect start to our meal.
SEAFOOD MAC & CHEESE
SWEET & SPICY SHRIMP

July 2019
Next out came the Seafood Mac and Cheese and the Sweet and Spicy Shrimp. The Mac and Cheese was amazing. It was a perfect salty, gooey cheese and just enough of the seafood mixed in to make it perfect. The breadcrumb topping was the crowning glory and I just couldn’t get enough. I had to be mindful to really pace myself knowing I had more food to eat. I could have finished the whole bowl.
KOREAN CHICKEN BBQ
WAGYU BEEF The Sweet and Spicy Shrimp was so good! The shrimp were a great size, with a bit of a crunchy batter on them, and the sauce was a perfect balance of the sweet and spicy. I am kind of a wimp about spice but the spice level on this dish was perfect! So yummy. Next out, the Wagyu Beef and the Korean Chicken. Both were to die for. The Wagyu was like butter. In fact, I used a butter knife to cut it. It wasn’t over seasoned as beef usually is. The Chef let the meat do the talking. The Chicken was delightful, served over rice. I usually skip chicken in restaurants because it tends to be dry. This might be the best chicken I have ever had. It’s very hard to choose a favorite. It’s a toss up between the Mac and Cheese and the Korean Chicken, but every single bite of each plate was absolutely amazing.

THE STING HOW TO CONTROL GROUND BEES IN YOUR L AWN
S
ummer is here to stay in West Michigan. With the rising temps and longer days, most of us will soak up the sun outdoors with family and friends. But we’re not the only ones settling in for the season
- our pesky friends, the ground bees and wasps, have started getting comfortable as well. While ground bees are beneficial to the environment, they can pose a significant threat to those with allergies to them.
Ground wasps - yellow jackets, cicada killer wasps, and digger wasps – are more aggressive and likely to sting family members and pets.
Prevention is the first step to pest control. Here are some great ways to prevent ground bees & wasps:
FILL IN THOSE HOLES!
GET THAT SPRINKLER GOING!
THROW DOWN THAT GRASS SEED!
Stinging insects use existing holes in the ground as their first choice for a new home.
Not only can it make your grass look lusher, it can also help deter pests from nesting in your lawn.
Having a thicker lawn with fewer patches makes it harder for the insects to build their nests.
If you do notice them buzzing around, give a certified pest control company a call. They can help you out in as little as one treatment.
