all, more so than any other season, is a time of change. We go from vivid greens all around us to glorious shades of yellow, red, gold and orange. This change is not monochromatic like the rest of the seasons but instead is a wild, lovely assortment of incredible hues. I believe that, if we let it, Autumn can inspire us to change our lives as well. Instead of a mundane lifestyle consisting of daily chores and work, let’s try creating multi-colored and exciting spaces in our lives and homes.

When fall hits most of us find ourselves ready to return home and resume the rhythms of a slower season. This year, I challenge you to find ways to transform those familiar routines into fun-filled events. As we prepare for those fall chores of sprucing up our nests and preparing for winter, maybe we should also search for DIY projects that will inspire our souls, lift our spirits and create a world of color in which to live. Don’t be afraid to paint a wall a hue the shade of a fallen leaf. Then look around and see what works with it. Matchie-matchie is my usual style so perhaps this year I’ll change that up to something wonderfully warm and use all the colors of the leaves. Change is in the air, so let’s embrace it and let it nurture our souls and lives as we strive to become the best versions of our wonderful selves.

Till Next Month, ] Darlene

At Home Workouts BY AIMEE HOPKINS

Home is my domain. My sanctuary. My oasis. And what better place to sweat, hustle, and make gains other than in the comfort of your own home and on your own terms. Here comes the magical part: you are in charge, the Master Trainer, if you will, of this at home fitness program. It’s pretty simple; burn calories, build muscle and don't overthink it. You aren’t going to be full beast mode every day but building a good solid plan with variety is key.

The second component is a cardio workout that can be easily achieved by body weight exercises(burpees, jumping jacks, squats, pushups mt. climbers etc.), jogging in place and jumping rope. The next component is resistance training and it does include body weight exercises, but for the best results this is where the kettle bells, dumbbells, barbells, and resistance bands come into play (bicep curls, shoulder presses, deadlifts, weighted lunges, lateral rows, farmer carries, etc.). The Some of my favorite perks of at home fitness last piece, the grand finale and in my opinion are: the judgment-free comfort factor, not the most critical is the cool down(bring heart having to get fully dressed, hot-mess approved, rate to rest) mobility exercises (foam rollers, no deodorant or hair brush required, freedom Lacrosse balls, rolling pins yes, I said a rolling to move and do the awkward stuff, you never pin) and static stretching. Breast Cancer Screening

WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Dr. Christina V. Jacobs Breast Imaging Director, Bronson Healthcare

reast cancer screening guidelines have been changing. Major health organizations have different recommendations for screening mammography. How do you know which to pick? Living in the information age with access to the internet, the days of the doctor telling the patient what to do without the patient’s input is outdated. Current guidelines emphasize that screening decisions should be made after a discussion between the patient and their provider. The most important points all the guidelines agree on is that mammograms save lives. The guidelines also agree that yearly mammograms, starting at age 40, save the most lives. The guidelines differ on how to weigh the proven benefit of saving lives versus the risks of mammography. Those risks are mainly false positives and overtreatment. With today’s technology, radiation is not a risk. Breast cancer becomes more common as women age. Some guidelines start routine

screening at age 50, leaving the decision to screen at 40-49 an individual decision. It is important to know that 1 in 6 women with breast cancer are diagnosed in their 40s, and 75% of these women have no family history or special risk factors. Also, the guidelines do not take race into account. Breast cancer peaks for women in their 40s who are black, Hispanic and Asian. For white women, it peaks when women are in their 60s. Some guidelines stress the risk of anxiety associated with a false positive exam as a reason not to start at age 40 and not to screen yearly. A false positive means an abnormality was discovered on the screening mammogram that needed further testing and turned out to not be cancer. The other main risk is overtreatment which refers to finding and treating a cancer that never would have been fatal if left untreated. At present, we cannot confidently determine which cancers can be left alone and watched versus which need treatment. Knowledge about different types of breast cancer continues to grow.

Many healthcare organizations recommend that women should begin yearly mammogram screening at age 40 and continue for as long as they are in good health. For some women, certain factors increase the risk for developing breast cancer. Additional screening measures may be necessary. CLEARER IMAGES IMPROVE BREAST CANCER DETECTION 3D mammography improves breast cancer detection and decreases false positives. This advanced technology allows the radiologist to see breast tissue in multiple slices from many different angles, improving accuracy and sensitivity as compared to a standard screening mammogram. Talk to your healthcare provider to discuss the best screening options for you.

MAMMOGRAMS SAVE LIVES Did you know that breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women and is the second leading cause of cancer death? And that early detection by having a mammogram is proven to save lives? The American Cancer Society recommends screening mammograms for women starting in their 40s. Schedule your appointment today. HOME Sweet HOME

HOME is where the heart is.

Family is the heart of the HOME. Nothing evokes feelings of comfort and belonging like that singular word: HOME. From the humblest apartment to the most glamorous mansion, home should be a place where we all feel welcome, understood and loved. No matter how beloved an abode, however, the day may come when it’s time for a family to sell their home and move on to their next adventure. When that day comes, one of their very first calls should be to the professionals at Beyond Staging. 12

October 2019

Peg Dorgan and her team are celebrating 5 years in the business of preparing houses for sale and enabling owners to receive the very best price for their beloved homes. She feels like she’s been preparing for this, her dream career, since she was a young girl with a passion for rearranging her furnishings on Sunday afternoons. This childhood penchant followed her into adulthood when her husband, Craig, and their three children would humor her as she changed the layout of the main floor on a monthly basis. During her 30 years of doing move-in cleaning as a subcontractor with Glas Associate Builders, Peg scratched her design itch by remodeling her own homes, which always sold in record time. It wasn’t until two family members asked for

assistance in preparing their own houses for sale, however, that Peg began to entertain the idea that there might be a career in it for her. After pointing out updates to be made, items to remove and ways in which to rearrange existing furniture, both of the homes in question sold in record time. Excited by her experience, Peg found herself wondering if she could make a living helping people to get the greatest value out of their houses and enabling them to move on to the next phases in their lives. A longtime fan of HGTV, Peg soon enrolled in Transformations Staging & Redesign School and spent a week in Jacksonville, Florida becoming certified through their program. She returned to Michigan to start her own business and hasn’t

Olivia and Tiago lived in the San Francisco area for three years, during which time Olivia took a position working for a startup company that was selling technology to trucking companies to help them streamline their back office operations. The 10th hire and only female on the team, she quickly learned to wear multiple hats. During her tenure at the start-up Olivia spent her time networking, selling, onboarding new clients, providing customer service and helping with marketing. Despite the fact that Olivia found her work exciting and challenging, the couple found they missed living near family and wanted to find a place to start putting down roots. Olivia knew from conversations with her mother that Peg was overwhelmed with managing all the aspects of her business herself. It was decided that the couple would move back to Michigan and Olivia would join her mother’s company, helping to organize and streamline the back office. It wasn’t long before Olivia discovered she has an affinity for the design aspects of the business and became certified in home staging. What started as a short-term role to assist her mother has evolved into a long-term

commitment to the business, the team and their clients. When asked which woman inspires them most, both Peg and Olivia answer without hesitation: their mothers. Peg’s mother, Judy O’Brien, left her successful career as an x-ray technician to follow a dream to become a realtor. Her enthusiasm and dedication were an inspiration to Peg. Their relationship only deepened when Peg had children of her own. Judy is supportive and taught her daughter how to work hard, be selfless & find strength in the toughest of times. Olivia admires her mother for finding her passion later in life and, rather than be intimidated or scared of it, taking a risk and pursuing it. She is forever grateful for the hard work and dedication her mother poured into her business and for the opportunity to work alongside her to grow the company they both love. The Flavors of Fall

Heather Dombos comes from a long, southern tradition of hospitality and hearty cooking. You can usually find her in the kitchen whipping up something special for family and friends.

Set filo dough package on the counter for about 20 minutes before you begin.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and have 2 baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and sea salt to a large mixing bowl. Toss and set aside.

EASY APPLE STRUDEL (Recipe makes 2 strudels)

1 package Filo Dough, thawed in the refrigerator overnight 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced as thin as possible

1/3 cup + 1 Tbsp light brown sugar, packed

¼ cup granulated sugar 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp sea salt

1 ½ cups unsalted butter, melted ½ cup powdered sugar

Remove the filo dough from package & cover with damp paper towels (this will prevent the dough from becoming brittle.) Brush parchment paper with a light coating of melted butter and gently place one sheet of filo dough on top of the parchment paper. Lightly brush the sheet of dough with butter and add another sheet of filo on top. Do this until you have eight sheets of filo dough total, buttered and stacked.

Add half of the apple filling (leaving behind juices) down the center of the filo dough, allowing for two to three inches of empty space along the borders.

Gently fold over the ends, brush with butter, then fold over one side, brush with butter and carefully roll the strudel onto its seam. Brush the top of the strudel lightly with butter. Repeat this entire process once more, using up the remaining apples (making a second strudel.)

Bake for 28 minutes, or until the strudel is golden. Allow to cool slightly, sift ¼ cup of powdered sugar over each strudel and serve with ice cream or fresh whipped cream.

PUMPKIN BREAD

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour 3 cups sugar 4 large eggs

In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients.

In another bowl, whisk the eggs, pumpkin, oil and water.

1 ½ tsp salt

2 tsp ground allspice

Stir into the dry ingredients until just moistened.

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground cloves

1 (15 ounce) can pure pumpkin ¾ cup vegetable oil 2/3 cup water

14

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

October 2019

Pour into three greased loaf pans. Bake for 50 – 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

S I M P L I F Y Your Life

BY OLIVIA ANDRADE

I know decluttering is a hot topic right now but I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that you add one thing into your life this month: something positive that won’t add to your clutter but will help you stay organized in some small way. Think about one space in your life that is perpetually disorganized, elicits anxiety whenever you think about it, and can be a hassle to get in/out of.

LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! For me, that daunting space is my entryway closet. Before I open the closet door all of the way I move into an “I’m ready to catch whatever falls on me” stance. Maybe you have a tall cabinet that is never fully in reach. Maybe your closet door gets stuck on something every time you open it. Maybe you spend a lot of time rummaging through drawers until you finally find what you’re looking for.

Picture the space that you interact with the most or that gives you the most grief. You can’t fix everything at once. If there is more than one area that comes to mind, focus on one with a low-cost solution that won’t take up a lot of additional space in your home. First, measure the space if you can. Start thinking about what type of solution would work best given your functional goals. If it helps, write

16

October 2019

down everything that you would ideally like to include in the space. When you’re ready to purchase this will help reduce your time spent in the store trying to visualize what will fit. If you’re doing this right, you’re spending no more than $50. A lower-cost investment should reduce your time spent in the buying process & will hopefully reduce any buyer paralysis. There shouldn’t be any serious sticker shock when getting this item home and it should become an almost seamless addition to your daily life. My husband and I went through buyer paralysis when we first moved into our new place. We went three-four weeks of daily complaints that we needed a utensil drawer organizer without buying one. We did not measure the space before purchasing which led to the unfortunate damage of our kitchen drawer.

SOLUTIONS Avoid buyer paralysis and avoid damaged drawers. Make the purchase. Keep the receipt. Go home and try it out. Sit with it for a few days. Return it if it doesn’t work out. If it does, pay attention to the positivity this small amount of organization has brought to your life. If you don’t have the space to reconfigure your kitchen to be more functional (e.g. move

items from the tall cabinet to one that’s more accessible), a stool is a low-cost option that can be easily hidden in a cabinet or between your fridge and the wall. If your closet door is getting stuck on clothes, blankets, or other items when you open it, consider adding baskets to your shelves & neatly tucking items inside them so that nothing is hanging over or sticking out. Matching baskets on shelves are appealing to the eye & give closets and pantries a cohesive look.

Find that perfect drawer or vanity organizer for the items that you use on a consistent basis and display them in a way that’s pleasing to you and saves you time.

Adding one functional item to your space doesn’t mean you can’t use this as an opportunity to further declutter and purge items that aren’t providing function or pleasure in your life. Life is short. Spend less time sifting through clutter and more time enjoying life. Olivia Andrade, is a Certified Home Stager and the Business Manager at M Real Estate Staging located in Plainwell, MI. Plan  and  Shop  Like  an  Image  PRO How to Develop the Maximized Wardrobe

BY KELLY DUGGAN

Whether you despise shopping or love it, having a plan is just the ticket for success. With a plan in place as a guide, you can avoid the overwhelm that may come with shopping, ensure that you stay focused in your hunt for the perfect new garment pieces or accessories, and purchase and bring home only the perfect wardrobe additions.

Creating a fully functional wardrobe, one that you haven’t chanted “I have nothing to wear” in front of, often takes planning and hard work. By following these proven Image PRO tips to wardrobe development and shopping, you’ll not only have a functionally maximized wardrobe, you may even find that you enjoy the process!

FIRST KNOW YOURSELF This is more than half the battle. Learn and understand in an in-depth manner who you are, what you need to be dressed for, and the successes that you desire. Consider the roles that you get dressed for on a daily, weekly, monthly bases. This will answer what types of garments that you need and the variety of levels of dress (weekend casual, business casual, mom gear, date night, etc.). Next, take time to answer the following questions …

Do you usually feel comfortable and at ease in that what you wear? If not, why?

Do you give a reasonable amount of thought to your look, rather than just letting it happen? If not, why? When you look great, do you feel you plan it that way or that you just “got lucky?” Does your appearance make you feel good about yourself most of the time?

And, what impression do you want to create in minds of others? Learning what demands are made upon your wardrobe, and having an honest view of

18

October 2019

your personal necessities, will allow you to determine your true needs.

DEFINE & REFINE In defining what is fitting for YOU, consider and develop these three areas: • Know/learn your own personal style traits, and how they best work together to compliment you. Look for color, fit and style that flatter your own natural physical characteristics.

• Consider the type of work that you do, and the industry that you work in. Many time’s a silent appearance standard is set by the industry itself.

• Know your goal/desired outcome, for yourself personally, as well as for those that you encounter and wish to influence.

A STRONG FOUNDATION With the knowledge gained from self-reflection and defining your true wardrobe needs, next begin your wardrobe plan with a strong foundation. First select your base foundational colors and garments. Good foundational wardrobe colors include: Navy, Charcoal to medium Grey, Chocolate Brown, Taupe/Camel, and Black. Selecting 2-3 of these colors for garments such as pant/skirts, jackets/cardigans and a coordinating top will give you a solid foundation ensemble to grow MANY looks from. Start with solid color Classic garments, and you will be ready to grow a wardrobe.

GET ORGANIZED Take time to go through your wardrobe, piece by piece. Move out items you know you aren’t going to wear. Get real with yourself – are their mistakes hanging in your closet or are you an impulsive shopper? Why? Is quantity and change more important to you than consistency

and quality? What are favorites and why? Learn what’s missing in your wardrobe, and what you have too many of! Consider your dress needs for the season ahead and plan accordingly by completing a shopping list. If this sounds like too big of a chore to do alone, enlist the help of a friend or an image pro.

LET’S SHOP! First, reduce any frustration by being prepared. You know that you want to be organized and have a plan in place, but also consider the following:

• Study the current marketplace. Develop a good sense of comparative shopping. • Use web based resources, fashion magazines, private collections, and your local stores for current fashion ideas.

• Become familiar with name brands and quality. Price is not a total indicator of quality, but it can guide us. Poor quality decisions will cost you more in the long run. You should strive to gradually upgrade the quality of your garments. • Know your resources & what they have to offer. Where you can get the best quality & service for the money that you have to spend. Lastly, don’t piecemeal your image with a little bit here, a little bit there, as it’s not a good way to develop your core wardrobe base. Don’t shop out of frustration. Don’t lock yourself into a mind-set. And finally, don’t fall prey to these and other hidden destroyers of a successful image!

5 Fall Tips  for a Healthy Yard

While many homeowners think lawns need less care during the fall months, it’s actually the perfect time to give your yard the extra boost in needs to make it through a dormant winter. Giving your lawn a little autumn attention as it works to absorb energy, moisture and nutrients to sustain it through the colder months can pay dividends with a lush, healthy yard next spring. Consider these tips to take advantage of the fall growing period:

MOW

Grass continues to grow until the first frost, so it’s important to keep mowing throughout the fall. Ideally, you should keep your yard at 2 1/2-3 inches in height, which is short enough to prevent matting and fungi like snow mold yet long enough to keep the root system deep enough to withstand the cold and dryness of winter. Leaving small clippings on the yard can also add organic matter, moisture and nutrients to the soil.

AERATE

Because your yard typically suffers some degree of soil compaction and heat stress, which can lead to brown or thinned grass, regular aeration can prevent soil from compacting and defend against thatch - a layer of roots, stems and debris - that blocks water, oxygen and fertilizer from reaching the roots. The process of aerating removes soil plugs from the yard to encourage root growth and free up passageways for nutrients.

RAKE

When leaves fall on your lawn, they can block out sunlight and, if left too long, stick together to form a suffocating mat on your grass, potentially leading to fungal diseases. Start raking as soon as leaves begin to fall or blow into your yard, & rake at least weekly. Alternatively, use your lawnmower fitted with a collection bag attachment to remove leaves from your lawn’s surface.

FERTILIZE

Because grass grows slower as the weather cools, fall is the ideal time to fertilize. In mid-to-late-fall, apply a dry fertilizer to your grassy areas to provide necessary nutrients and encourage deep roots and denser growth that can better compete with weeds and tolerate disease and insects. For optimum coverage, use a drop spreader, though crank-style broadcast spreaders also work.

OVER-SEED

A dense lawn not only looks good, but also helps protect against weeds. Over-seeding your existing turf can help fill in any thin or bare spots and also introduces the resilient grass seed. For best results, over-seed immediately after aerating when the ground is still warm, nights are cooler and the sun is not as hot during the day. DATE NIGHT AT HOME BY RACHEL KIRTLEY, THE KALAMAZOO FOODIE

L

ife gets busy and sometimes we forget to take time for ourselves, especially with our significant other. It’s important to make time each week to do something together. Too often, couples put off date night because they assume it has to be a formal night out on the town. Date night doesn’t always have to be a 3-course meal, expensive flowers, and high expectations. While that route is absolutely fine, sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that mean the most. That’s why date night at home is something we don’t always think about. The most important part of a date night is getting to spend quality time with your partner. We all live increasingly busy lives, so it’s nice to slow down and enjoy the moment together. It’s proven that date nights together can improve communication, destress you, help strengthen your commitment to one another and so much more! With a little planning, you can create the perfect date night that best suites your relationship.

teamwork to create a special meal together and October just so happens to be National Pizza and National Pasta Month! Who doesn’t love a good pizza or pasta dish? Be sure to keep the night simple, yet fun. If you have never made pizza dough before, take the stress out of the equation and pick up

pre-made pizza dough from Bravo’s Restaurant & Cafe on Portage Rd with a 24-hour notice.

(SEE RECIPE ON PAGE 21.) For $5.00 you can get a pizza box, pre-made dough, and cornmeal to roll out your dough, while still supporting local business. You can also bring along your growler and fill it with one of Bravo’s many beers on tap. Because what’s a pizza without a good beer to pair with it! Not into beer? You can still support local and grab a bottle of wine from Tempo Vino Winery downtown Kalamazoo anytime during the week or weekend.

October is full of fun foodie holidays along with National Sweetest Day on the 19th. It’s the perfect month to celebrate your relationship and recognize your sweetheart. No matter the budget, there is always something new and fun to try together. With the season transitioning into fall, there’s no better time to cozy up with a few soft and plush blankets, stack up all the pillows on the couch, pop some popcorn, and catch up on your favorite TV shows, watch a new series on Netflix, or a movie!

Let’s talk pasta! October 17th is National Pasta Day. Fettucine Alfredo is always a hit, and super easy to make at home. (SEE RECIPE ON PAGE 21.) I’ve included a recipe for fool proof alfredo sauce, with extra sauce for dipping your garlic bread into, or even leftovers. I love using fresh-dried pasta from West Michigan Pasta Provisions! If fettucine noodles aren’t up your alley, they have many more options and even some pasta made with veggies. They hand-make all of their own pastas and you can find them at the Kalamazoo Farmer’s Market through November, and also at Lawton Ridge Winery, Sprout in Battle Creek, Micro Grocery in Bronson Hospital and online.

Cooking together is a fun hands-on date night experience that allows you to use

If you love to cook and want to surprise your partner, another option is to create your

20

October 2019

own 2 or 3 course-menu, grab some flowers, candles, and set the dining room table for a romantic dinner at home. Or you could amp it up a notch by printing out mini “menus” of what you will be eating. Maybe find some simple yet cute napkin folds, and break out that table cloth you use for special occasions. Not into cooking an elaborate meal? You can keep it simple and grab your favorite cheese, crackers, fruits and spreads and create your own charcuterie board together. Finish it off by opening a bottle of wine and go to the kids’ closet for your favorite board game! Others would just prefer to relax and order take-out from their favorite restaurant. While your waiting for it to be delivered, you can set the table with some candles or lay blankets on the floor for a cozy experience. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a memorable date night at home. The memories you create cooking together, playing games, or just spending time getting to re-connect with each other, is sure to give your relationship that boost of confidence that we sometimes need but don’t always recognize. The most important part of date night is to spend time with the person you love most, creating new memories that will last a lifetime.

Mothers: Stop Ruining Your Daughters! BY ASHLEY CARTER YOUNGBLOOD, LMSW, LMFT, CMHIMP

Ladies, it’s about to get real. I’m about to give you a behind-the-scenes look at being a psychotherapist. Let us preface this by saying, however, that healing is ALWAYS possible. (Otherwise, how would our world keep going?) So, all hope is not lost. In the meantime…stop ruining your daughters!

THE FACTS

A 2008 study at the University of North Carolina reported that 65% of American women have disordered eating and that 75% of American women have unhealthy thoughts, feelings, or behaviors related to food or their bodies. If that isn’t enough, the National Eating Disorders Association reports that nearly half of first through third grade girls want to be thinner! And, where do those messages come from? Certainly, the recent Weight Watchers’ dieting app geared toward kids as young as 8 years old (that is not a typo – Google it!) does not help. But, mostly, um, YOU!

YOUR INFLUENCE

The most powerful messages about our bodies and self-worth come from our mothers. What you say and do matters! If I had a penny for every time I had a full-grown adult woman even as seasoned as 70 years old came into my office complaining about having a “food addiction,” “sugar addiction,” “a problem with food,” or binge-eating behaviors (which are present in around half of Americans by the way), citing that such behaviors have been present since her mother started calling her “fat” and made her diet, I would have been able to solve world hunger by now! As you know, being a woman in a maledominated society focused on our bodies and not our brains is hard enough! So, why are we making it harder for each other than it has to be, especially for our younger generations!? I get it. We do not live in a society where

22

October 2019

having a healthy relationship with food is common. How could we avoid disordered eating and poor body image given all of the addictive, fake food-like substances being sold and with the global weight management market being valued at more than many countries’ Gross Domestic Product, valued at a whopping 212.1 billion dollars in 2018? It may be hard to model what it means to love your body, no matter the shape, and to not constantly be focused on losing weight or inches that you believe will help you feel better about yourself. But, please remember your kids are listening! Even if you do not think that they are or you think they are too young to “really know” what is going on, or even if you are not speaking directly to them, they listen. They absorb. They notice your relationship with food and your body. Are you criticizing your stretchmarks or complaining about how you “should” be able to fit into the jeans you wore in high school? Are you complimenting others when they have lost weight, assuming that this is a measure of health and that they lost the weight in a healthy way? Are you making comments about how some foods are “bad” or how you or others “shouldn’t eat that?” If so, stop ruining your daughters! Years from now, they will be coming into an office like mine struggling to not constantly calculate the calories they are “allowed to have” at any given time during the day and constantly struggling to fight the innervoice that tells them they need to go from one trendy yo-yo diet to another!

BE LOGICAL

So, what are your options? Loving yourself is always a good start. But, that can take years of practice, especially if you were raised in a home where negative talk or extreme expectations around food or bodies were the norm.

So, let’s be logical. What does The Golden Rule say? If it does not uplift your daughter, do not say it! If you are about to make a passiveaggressive comment like “Are you really going to eat that!?” to your daughter at a family function, don’t! Think about what was said to you about food or your body that was harmful and simply do not pass those messages along. They stick with us and, like a sliver buried deep within the skin, it takes years of work to pry those core beliefs lose. Instead, using The Golden Rule, what helps you to feel empowered and comfortable in your own skin? Say those things not only to your daughter to help repair any hurts surrounding food and body image, but also to yourself. Remember that you are more than your body and you, more than anyone else in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection. So, practice speaking the same love to your daughters and all the other women in your life that you crave (and deserve!) for yourself. Full City Café B

reakfast is my favorite meal. I don’t often go out to eat for breakfast because mornings are busy. However, I was craving some friend time, so I carved out a morning and met a good friend at Full City Café in Portage for some delicious food and catching up.

Full City Café has been around for a twenty-six years. They opened their original restaurant in 1993 as a small coffee shop and moved to their current location in 2005. I arrived on a Monday morning and found a seat with my friend and her young daughter in a cozy booth. A friendly server greeted us promptly and offered us some coffee. I examined the menu and was very excited by it! They aren’t your typical eggs with a side of bacon joint. They are known for their bowls and omelets and are incredibly creative and original with their ingredients. A foodie’s dream! I had a very hard time choosing between something savory or something sweet, so I went with the Duck Confit Hash (Slow cooked duck, potatoes, and spinach with two eggs, red cabbage, fresh tomatoes, parmesan, and micro greens) as well as the small stack of Brioche French Toast. The Brioche French Toast was house-made brioche, custard dipped, griddled to golden brown and served with caramelized bananas, pecans, and vanilla crème sauce. My friend decided on the Tater Scramble which consisted of three large eggs scrambled with ham, green pepper and red onion on tater tots then smothered in melted

TATER SCRAMBLE 24

October 2019

COFFEE cheddar cheese. However, she asked for the skillet fries rather than the tater tots and they were incredibly accommodating and told her they could do that. Her daughter, selecting from the kid’s menu, got pancakes with a side of bacon. They were also very accommodating by bringing out the pancakes first, since kids can get a little antsy for food. The adult meals came out shortly after and OH BOY, they were beautiful! My French toast was grilled to perfect. I shared my grilled bananas that were served on the side because they were just so fun. They were a banana cut in half and grilled, so they had a lovely caramelization on them. The French toast was awesome. It was sweet without being overindulgent and the toasted pecans added a wonderful texture to the plate. The Duck Confit was beyond amazing! I’ve been thinking of this meal ever since and can’t wait to go back for more! The duck was tender and flavorful, the potatoes were crispy and delicious and my over medium egg on top was cooked to perfection! All of it was a perfect combination of textures and flavors. And the plating was beautiful! So colorful and exciting. My friend LOVED her scramble. Another wonderful thing was that the bowls were

DUCK CONFIT

KIDS PANCAKES so large that we were only able to eat about half of them, taking the other half home for a lunch! My friend’s daughter devoured her pancakes and her extra crispy bacon (just how I liked it) was shared between all of us. So Yummy. We sat and enjoyed another delicious cup of coffee, enjoyed each other’s company and our food coma. We did overhear a nearby table asked questions about the menu. It seemed they were a little intimidated by the café’s eclectic offerings, so the server told them that they could do a simple eggs and bacon (something that isn’t on their menu) if they wanted to. It was nice of the restaurant to accommodate that, but man I wish I could have gone over there and told them to trust the menu…it’s so good! I will definitely be back to Full City Café. The restaurant was clean, the service was amazing, and the food was beyond my expectations! Thanks, Full City, for the best breakfast I’ve had in a long time! The Ketogenic Lifestyle —Part 2

Retrain Your

Food Habits BY JENNY OPDYCKE, PA-C

A

s we get into the nuts and bolts of nutritional ketosis, please realize that ketogenic principles are powerful medicine! This is not a “one-sizefits-all” process. One person has vastly different nutritional needs day to day, week to week and year to year. You need one way of eating if you’re training for an athletic event, another if you have the stomach flu, and yet another if you’re recovering from an emotional trauma. I’m talking about using the food you eat as a transformational, healing process rooted in self-awareness than can change as you do. That being said, certain core concepts apply. The younger you are and the more active you are, the more carbs you can tolerate. The more stressed, sleep deprived, sick and inflamed you are, the less you can tolerate carbs. Unfortunately, the more likely you are to crave them. The very first step is to start

26

October 2019

practicing awareness around the choices you make, the emotions you feel when you make these choices, and how foods make your body feel and perform. It is only through awareness of our choices and habits that change becomes possible and sustainable. Please practice self-compassion as you reflect on your habits surrounding food. Our society is riddled with conditioning and rituals around food. Food is meant to be one of life’s pleasures, but it is not supposed to make anyone feel like a heroin addict. Reflect on how your family of origin used food as rewards and excuses for social connection. Often these patterns with food are unconscious and extremely emotionally powerful. Keep in mind that refined sugars and starches act like drugs in the brain. Billion dollar industries have been created around the psychotropic effect that food-like substances can cause. They are powerful anesthetics and euphorics—they numb pain and makes us feel better, but at a high cost. Carbohydrate addiction is a real thing. This is immediately evident when a child is denied a sugary snack or the lengths they will go to to obtain it. All addictions have physiologic and emotional components.

Recovery is possible, but it requires that both levels are addressed. Emotionally, all addictions are rooted in the human experience of suffering, and the natural desire of human beings to seek relief. It doesn’t matter what kind of addiction we are discussing. The substance of choice provides temporary relief, but it has collateral damage. It is only through building selfawareness, engaging in the principles of selfcompassion, learning emotional processing with validation, obtaining community support, AND healing of the diseased physiology that addictive patterns can be sustainably broken.

Jenny Opdycke, PA-C has been practicing medicine for more than 16 years. Her specialties include holistic wellness, anxiety/depression, trauma recovery and intuitive, low carb eating strategies that promote self-awareness and healing. She loves spending time with her twin girls, friends, and fur babies. More info at www.integratedhealthmatters.com.

Fresh, Fabulous Foliage for Fall BY TERRI SCHWARTZ OF WEDEL’S NURSERY, FLORIST & GARDEN CENTER

T LIDAKENSE STONECROP SEDUM CAUTICOLA

his is the ideal time to replace worn-out, overgrown annuals with fresh, colorful plants in gardens and containers. Some of the new arrivals in Wedel’s greenhouses include chrysanthemums, pansies, ornamental grasses, spring-flowering bulbs and sedum plants.

Here are some ideas for fresh splashes of color in your landscape that you can put in now. ORNAMENTAL KALE & CABBAGE will give incredible color now through November. It looks especially nice in containers or in a line along a walk. Ornamental kale and cabbage plants will tolerate some frosts and the colors will become even more vibrant after a few cold nights. For spots here and there that need some color, just pop in a CHRYSANTHEMUM or two. Red, yellow, lavender, gold, and white – there’s a color for every needy area. Or put in some autumn blooming CELOSIA. The bright plumes are a stand-out!

YELLOW DAFFODIL BULBS & BLUE PANSIES

PANSIES provide a pop of color now and will continue all fall. They will start blooming again as soon as the snow melts for more enjoyment again next spring. For a color treat next spring, plant YELLOW DAFFODIL BULBS then put BLUE PANSIES over them. Next spring, the bright yellow daffodils will push through the blue pansies – beautiful! Perennials, trees and shrubs put in the ground at this time of year will have time to root in before the winter and will be ready to look great next spring. Here are some stars you’ll want to include in your landscape.

At Wedel’s, we have over twenty-five varieties of ORNAMENTAL GRASSES that could enhance nearly every garden and landscape. Most ornamental grasses have twelve-month benefits. Blue, green, variegated, cream, chartreuse, and red foliage anchor these beauties with plumes of yellow, cream, red, and white

shooting upwards. The ideal time to plant ornamental grasses is in the autumn. You will enjoy them now and for years to come! They are exceptionally hardy as well as being deer resistant, and will add a variety of different textures to gardens. Many varieties of the sedum family are showing off their autumn plumage now. AUTUMN FIRE, SUN SPARKLER AND AUTUMN JOY are just a few of these super hardy reliable bloomers that attract most gardeners and every butterfly in the neighborhood. Autumn flowering shrubs can also lend a helping hand to keep our landscapes interesting in the fall. Try these shrubs that will be winners in your autumn landscape for years to come:

• ROSE OF SHARON with its red and white flowers.

• CLETHRA, or HUMMINGBIRD

SHRUB, produces fragrant white flowers for several weeks.

• HENRY’S GARNET ITEA is a fun

flowering shrub with long lasting red fall color.

• OAKLEAF HYDRANGEA has dark red to burgundy foliage on cinnamon colored stems.

• LIMELIGHT HYDRANGEA is a star

in the autumn landscape with huge green blooms that turn light pink. Limelight’s flowers make great autumn bouquets as well as pretty dried bouquets that last until next year’s blooms.

• One of the last blooms of autumn arrive on the WITCH HAZEL SHRUB; with yellow-orange flowers, Witch Hazel is so fitting for the season. Add to all these blooming beauties the bright fall foliage of carefully selected trees & your landscape will be as interesting and showy in the autumn as it is in the spring.

Learning from the Season

BY EMILY BETROS

It’s officially time to say goodbye to summer and welcome in another fall season. It’s a short, crisp window between the relaxing summer months and busy days of the holiday season. There’s a great quote that says:

SLOWING DOWN

If we really tune in to this time of year, we can feel that it’s starting to slow down. Outside, the abundance of growth we enjoy during the spring and summer has come to a halt. With less and less sunlight every day, our days feel shorter. We have packed away all the outdoor toys and activities that kept us moving over the last few months. We don’t usually get noticed or rewarded for slowing down. In American culture, there is a very strong message that busy is good, slow is bad. But this is counter intuitive and becomes more and more obvious when we take a moment to stop and crunch on some leaves or take in a big deep breath of cool air. Fall is reminding us and giving us permission to slow down, so listen. Say no to a few invites and make sometime for yourself. Try doing nothing for a few minutes each day. Disconnect from your phone or other external stimuli and be fully present in a task. Incorporate activities that are naturally slower than others: reading, walking, or cooking a meal from scratch.

This vibrant annual display of color change is absolutely beautiful. And, like most things, it does come to an end and the trees have to shed their leaves. So, what does this mean in practice and what can we learn from this time of the year? Here are two ways we can mirror the fall season this year.

30

October 2019

LETTING GO

When we slow down, it becomes easier to let go. We can notice more about ourselves. If we stay busy and distracted, we can carry around a lot that isn’t serving us anymore–usually without us even knowing it! Think about what mental, physical, or

emotional “leaves” you can drop. These might be things that have already happened or maybe it’s pressure or stress about the upcoming holidays. Write down your values and see if they still line up with how you are spending your time. If you find incongruents, you may be feeling unbalanced. Reflect on what changes need to be made so that you are staying true to yourself and letting go of the rest.

FEELING FALL

Still struggling? Get outside and feel the season with all five of your senses. The sights, sounds, and smells of fall don’t scream hustle. They’re whispering cool, calm, quiet. If you give yourself just a few moments to wrap yourself up in this time of year (pumpkin spice latte and favorite cozy sweatshirt, optional), you’ll quickly follow suit. Moving with the pace of the season is a great way to stay grounded and present so we are able to listen to our own voice. There is a lot of beauty surrounding us this time of year, and that includes each of us as we too let our leaves go. PODCASTS

Culpable

On February 26, 2014, Christian Andreacchio was found dead in the upstairs bathroom of his apartment from a single gunshot wound to the head. After a mere 45-minute investigation, local police ruled his death a suicide, despite substantial evidence that points to Christian’s death not only being a homicide, but a premeditated murder. Host Dennis Cooper investigates and shares a compelling story about this suspicious death, the questions surrounding it, and a grieving family’s ongoing fight for justice.

Dr. Death

Dr. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. If you had back pain, and had tried everything else, Dr. Duntsch could give you the spine surgery that would take your pain away. But soon his patients started to experience complications. And all they had to protect them was a system ill equipped to stop the madness.

Have a Happy Halloween

MAKE A PLAN – A couple of weeks before Halloween decide of when and where you will go trick-or-treating and map out your route. Plan an early dinner before heading out, the last thing you want are hungry kids with a full bag of candy at their disposal. Having a plan is a great way to ensure a happy Halloween. GO IN A GROUP – The old saying is true, there is safety in numbers. Groups are easier to spot moving around neighborhoods and the buddy system is always a great idea when visiting homes you aren’t completely familiar with. TEACH KIDS MANNERS FOR TRICK-ORTREATING – Halloween is a great opportunity to reinforce your child’s manners. Make sure they greet the homeowners, say thank you for the candy and only take what they are offered. EMPHASIZE SAFETY – Everyone is excited and energetic on Halloween. It can be easy to forget some of the most basic safety rules. Always look before crossing the street, be cautious of strangers, never enter a stranger’s

38

October 2019

home, use the buddy system and make sure you are easily visible once the sun sets. KEEP KIDS’ COSTUMES SAFE – Give kids’ costumes a good safety check. Can the see through their masks? Will they trip over the costume? Is it warm or cool enough for the weather? Can they be easily seen once it is dark out? CONSIDER YOUR COSTUME & KEEP IT CLASSY – It is fun to join the kids in celebrating Halloween but be mindful when selecting your Halloween attire. What might be appropriate for an adult Halloween party may not be appropriate for trick-or-treating with your kids or handing out candy from your home. It’s always best to keep it classy. LET THEM BE KIDS – I am always surprised when people complain about teenagers trickor-treating. Let them be kids! Considering all the things they could be doing, I’m glad to see them on my porch asking for candy and enjoying a night of costumes and fun.

OFFER OPTIONS – Keep in mind that many children have food allergies and intolerances. Make sure to have a few non-food items to offer kids with nut, dairy or gluten allergies. Place a teal pumpkin on your porch to indicate you are an allergy friendly home. PROTECT YOUR PETS – As much as we love all the ghosts, goblins and screaming of trick-or-treat on Halloween, our pets aren’t so excited with all the unfamiliar sights and sounds. It is best to keep your pet confined to a comfortable area of your home, like the bedroom. The last thing you want is your pet dashing out the door on Halloween. KEEP YOUR DÉCOR SPOOKY, NOT HORRIFIC – Most of us love a good scare and the past few years we have all seen some pretty amazing Halloween displays in our neighbor’s yards. Keep in mind your trick-or-treat audience and keep your décor a little more PG rated, at least during the hours that little ones will be visiting your home.
