o quote Calvin Coolidge, “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind.”
State of mind, indeed! For most of us, it’s a time to rev it into high gear, because in addition to managing our full time careers and households, we are also shopping, plotting menus, prepping the house, hosting and attending annual holiday parties, and managing our children’s holiday schedules!
From the Editor
Having said that, I have to admit that once the snow settles, Christmas remains one of my top holidays to celebrate. Holiday events with family and friends are a fitting time to reminisce on past Christmases, highlight special memories, and make new ones! One of my special holiday memories is sneaking in the kitchen before bedtime with my Grandma Ada and sharing a glass of rich, creamy eggnog with just a splash of whiskey concocted in one of her special holiday glasses with prancing reindeer. I was probably 10 or so and sitting quietly together in her dimly lit kitchen in our jammies was an annual tradition she initiated for just the two of us. She’s long gone now but feelings of love, family and home are forever linked to a glass of eggnog. This year, as in Christmases past, we’ll be together again in spirit as I sip my special glass of holiday cheer and think back on our times together.
What’s your favorite holiday memory? In this issue you’ll find fun and practical gift ideas featured in our Local Holiday Gift Guides. Take advantage of Free Parking Thursdays at the Epic Ramp/South Street in downtown Kalamazoo through December 25th and SHOP LOCAL! Bring the holiday spirit into your home with our collection of recipes, decorating tips, and tech savvy stocking stuffers. Worried about overeating and overindulging during this most decadent time of year? You can still have that glass of eggnog and stay true to
yourself by reading our Six Survival Tips for Staying Healthy during the Holiday Season. We’ll also help you banish the confusion on what to wear to the parties, galas and gatherings with our What Should I Wear? Reference Guide on page 12. Christmas is the season for giving and a critical time to remember those in our community who are struggling. We contacted nine of the many outstanding not-forprofit organizations who are providing much needed services to our area citizens in need and asked them for suggestions on how you can make a difference. You won’t want to miss this important feature and the wish lists submitted by the organizations which include writing a check, mentoring a child, donating blood, purchasing canned goods, and volunteering at a food bank, to name a few. I guarantee you, there’s something here for everyone. And to once more quote Calvin Coolidge, “ To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” As 2014 draws to a close, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your support and friendship throughout the year. Wishing you happy holidays from the Women’s Lifestyle Magazine family!

10 Things For December
by Peaches McCahill

Visit a consignment shop. What a perfect place to find a special outfit for holiday celebrations.
2 Learn how to fold. Surprise others with a special napkin at the table.
Stick to your Christmas budget. Avoid the urge to overspend. The bills show up in January no matter what!
“Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” – Eric Sevareid
4 Treat yourself to a massage. The true benefits are endless: relaxing, detoxifying and as an assist with pain and anxiety management.
6 9
Watch some holiday classics. I never get tired of The Bells of St. Mary, Miracle on 34th Street, Scrooge, or It’s a Wonderful Life.
Organize a caroling party. Stop by a couple houses and end with hot chocolate or a hot toddy.
Don’t rely on your physical beauty. It fades with time. Work on strengthening your inner spirit.
7
Thank all the angels in your life. Send them a note of gratitude.
8 Rejoice in all that is good.

Seasonal
Simplicity by Liz Galvan
T
he winter holidays are a fun time for home decoration. Whether you prefer rustic, classic or even whimsical Christmas décor, I have quick and easy tips to bring the holiday spirit to your home. Follow these five tips for an easy transition from the fall season to a winter wonderland in one afternoon.
Add a Christmas tree (or three)
The most obvious way to bring the season into your home is by adding a Christmas tree. Whether you like a classic Douglas fir or a white tree with colorful lights, it’s the number one way to make your house ready for the holiday season.
Hang up a wreath.
A holiday wreath hanging on your front door will welcome your guests into your home. Simple wreaths look great inside, too. You can DIY a spiffy red and green wreath by adding ornaments and other items, or you can simply hang a plain pine needle wreath with a ribbon to give off the holiday vibe. Wreaths are a fun and easy way to bring the outdoor yuletide spirit inside.
Light some candles.
Lighting sets the mood for warm and cozy winter days. Lighting a candle or a group of candles in some holiday decor brings your seasonal decorations to the next level. Candles look great as centerpieces on tables, vignettes on furniture in your home, and as a bonus, the holiday ones smell great and set the mood with scents such as cinnamon and baked goods.

December 2014
Bring out throws and holiday pillows.
Adding cozy blankets and holiday pillows with pops of gold, green, red, or any other fun holiday color is a great way to add warmth to your everyday home decor. Plaids, Christmas patterns, holiday colors, and even making your own Christmas themed pillow is the perfect way to keep the décor comfortable.
Wrap those gifts early.
Adding Christmas gifts and placing them under the tree adds a little thrill to your holiday decor. There are a million ways you can wrap gifts. You can even wrap faux boxes to look like Christmas gifts and place them under your tree for added decoration prior to finishing your shopping (and leaving room for Santa). Add cute ribbon, ornaments, and even chalkboard gift tags and you have some lovely holiday decor for under your tree. Happy holiday decorating! Have fun making your homes into the seasonal retreat that you can cuddle up in, enjoy a mug of hot cocoa and enjoy the view.

that we set out to meet? What surprises did we encounter along the way? Reflecting on the year is a meaningful practice, but the power of reflection is greatly enhanced as a daily practice. Much of our thinking is habitual, like driving a car. We slide in the driver’s seat and off we go, habitually engaging in a tremendously complex process without having to think through every step. Many thoughts and behaviors are much the same: they’re on autopilot. Our brain loves autopilot! It costs much less brain energy to operate habitually than to operate as if everything were novel. Thus, habitual thoughts and behaviors develop very easily and become routine, regardless of whether they are supportive or destructive to our wellness. Many of these imbedded “ways of being” can sabotage self-care. Personally, I have a horrifying need to be right. My brain can place almost any circumstance into the habitualized thought pattern: “You’re right and they’re wrong and you should let them know it!” I’m sure this can be helpful at times, but honestly, there is NOT a right way to load the dishwasher… there is only my habitualized way of doing it and my habitualized rise in self-righteousness when someone does it differently. When I am engaging in this thought pattern I don’t feel a sense of relief at being right. I feel stressed, which is the greatest threat to my personal wellbeing. Being willing to investigate our habitual patterns is called “reflection” because we are looking
back at what we’re really doing and asking “how’s that working for me?” Reflection is the primary key to learning effective self-care habits, otherwise we’ll just keep doing what we’ve been doing and getting the same results. The five fundamental areas of selfcare that we must address are stress, sleep, relationships, nutrition and exercise. Caring for these five domains profoundly affects our ability to live a fulfilling life. For example, people often disregard the need for quality sleep, but poor sleep influences every facet of our wellbeing. How we get sleep is often the result of habitual behaviors rather than reflective responses. For example, many clients tell me that they sleep poorly AND drink a lot of caffeine. They are convinced that the two aren’t related yet have never openly explored the relationship. What habitualized thoughts and behaviors will you find when you begin to reflect on self care practices? What will happen if you constantly ask “How’s that working for me?” Can you use reflection to help replace destructive behaviors with quality supportive behaviors? Caring for yourself this way can be the work of a lifetime, but hey, what else are you going to do with this beautiful life, except to try and live it as authentically, fully and honestly as you can.

What Should I Wear?
or some, it’s difficult to dress for an average day at work. Throw in a handful of party invitations with different attire definitions, and holiday fun has suddenly become a hassle. Banish the confusion and use these party definitions as your reference guide. Raiding the closet will take less time than your precooked dish to pass.
Dinner Party
Think of it as a semi-formal occasion where you’ll be eating and socializing. Wear something comfortable, classy and simple with a splash of personality.
Cocktail Attire
Slip on a dress that mimics that martini glass you’ll be holding all night. Wear your elegant, short cocktail dress, an off the shoulder style, or your classic black dress with unique accessories. Whatever you wear, be sure you’re comfortable in it; cocktail parties usually involve socialization and include adult birthday parties, holiday gatherings or evening events.
Semi-Formal
Ditch the long dress and reach for something in between casual and black tie. Incorporating some color while still keeping it classy is a safe medium for this type of party.
Business Casual
For most, this attire is similar to what you would wear to work on a daily basis: Comfortable and presentable, clean and casual. A skirt paired with a button down or three-quarter sleeve top is a safe option.
Black Tie
This invitation is the most fancy you’ll receive. Primarily reserved for galas or fundraisers, upscale weddings (one on New Years, for example) or trendy celebrations, black tie calls for formalwear. The grander the affair, the more formal it gets. Dig for your classy cocktail or long dress. Dressy evening separates or your “little black dress” will work, too. Deeper, rich colors and a neutral palette for makeup and accessories compliment this type of invitation. This attire also applies for a black tie optional party. If it’s labeled creative black tie, then room is paved for trendy pieces and more individuality.
Casual
Whew, finally an invitation you don’t have to fret. Look nice, but don’t try too hard. This party is all about function and fun. A pair of nice jeans and your favorite sweater is appropriate. If the invitation says dressy casual or casual chic, pair nice pants or a skirt with a dressy top for a more ornate look.

Walnuts Make an Easy Gluten Free & Dairy Free Homemade Holiday Gift D o you enjoy making homemade holiday gifts? Consider making and giving seasoned/spiced walnuts! These nuts pack a powerful nutritional punch with protein, fiber, omega 3 and trace minerals. Studies have shown that walnuts’ antioxidants are good for your heart, help you control your weight, and may help manage your diabetes. In addition, walnuts enhance brain function and the male reproductive system. Soaking walnuts, or any nuts, improves digestion and ensures you receive the maxim benefits. Soaking not only breaks down the photic acids but also reduces enzyme inhibitors resulting in easier digestion. The result will be a milder flavor and softer texture. You can also extend their shelf life by drying them through low roasting.
Soaked Ginger Walnuts 1 cup of walnuts Water to cover nuts ¼ teaspoon of ginger 1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. 2. Place walnuts in a bowl and cover with water and let soak 8 hours. Drain and rinse nuts. 3. Toss nuts with ginger. 4. Spread nuts on a cookie sheet lined with unbleached parchment paper and place in preheated oven. 5. Cook for 20 minutes. You will start to smell them. Check to make sure they are dry; if not, cook until dry. Remove from oven and let cool. Store in ball jar in the refrigerator.

5 Ways To
A
Paw It Forward
s a gift giver, you seek a gift that has a personal, yet fun balance. In our family, the gift exchange tradition is for the humans and the four-legged companions; we all get into the holiday spirit and have gifts under the tree. If you have a pet, they certainly make your holiday shopping list, but what about furry friends who aren’t part of your family? This is the season to not only receive, but to give. Have you thought of giving to the pets in your community who have yet to find a forever home? They are often underfunded, underserved and of course voiceless to their needs that continue year around, but the holidays afford an opportunity to bring their needs to the forefront. Local rescue groups operated by kind people who rescue animals from shelters and place them in the care of foster families. These groups provide food, kennels, and veterinary care to help these animals find forever homes. They go largely unnoticed in the eyes of the communities, especially around the holidays. Here are a few ways to raise awareness and resources for these furry friends and their hero humans.
1.
At family gift exchanges, instead of trading gifts cards with each other choose an organization that you can give a gift/donation to. With social media, you can follow the organization and see what your gifts have done for these dogs and cats that are searching for homes.
by Angie Hultgren
you could move on to fostering dogs in your home. Most organizations will accept foster home applications. Fostering is a tough job, but yields proud and rewarding experiences.
4.
You can also sponsor a pet who is in the shelter environment. The Humane Society of West Michigan gives you the opportunity to sponsor a select kennel. You can donate to aid with spay and neuter efforts, or purchase them new bedding with your sponsorship. Little things make a huge difference. If you are like me and lost a very special pet, you can even make an honorary donation in their name.
5.
Anonymously donate to a local emergency clinic or veterinary practice. Ask the money to be confidentially given to a pet in need or a specific rescue group. There are many families who struggle during the holidays, and in the event that an emergency happens, this monetary support can impact someone in need.
Here are local organizations to contact: Animal Rescue Project www.kalamazooanimalrescue.org Humane Society Kazoo humane.org Michigan Cat Rescue Cat.rescueshelter.com Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of SW Michigan Spcaswmich.org
Paying it forward to needy pets in your community is a great way of extending gratitude beyond your immediate family. Doing all your giving this year with passion and love will ensure a merry holiday.
2.
Give random gifts of kindness. Recently, a local rescue organization called Vicky’s Pet Connection posted a “wish list” on Amazon that included all of the immediate needs for the organization. This was by far the easiest way for me to give because it shipped right to their doorstep. Look for simple opportunities like this where shifting only a few dollars of your budget can satisfy the needs of a lonely pet.
3.
Start the New Year off with a commitment to volunteer. It can be a refreshing way to establish a resolution. It is a unique and rewarding experience. You can spend time walking, cleaning, and feeding these loving animals, and if you fall in love with it like I did,

Positive Change Journey
Carole Morgan, Nancy Kern & Amy Susan: Striving to balance work and life for happy healthier selves
Over the past few months our ladies have lost a total of over 30 inches, well over 50 pounds, increased strength and balance, held a perfect one- minute plank in public, dropped dress sizes, worn more form-fitting clothing, started standing up straighter, and are exuding more confidence. Keep going! You are truly motivating! Here are their goals for the holiday season:
“Holidays have always been fast and furious for me as my husband and I don't live near enough to either side of our families to visit regularly. Thanksgiving is a super quick trip to Pennsylvania to visit my family. And even though this very brief trip hardly qualifies as a vacation, whenever travel is involved my brain seems to go on vacation mode. And vacation mode triggers a lot of eating. Although the holiday season will be very hard this year as it will be the first without my beloved mother, who so enjoyed preparing the traditional and huge meal for our family, it is the perfect time to change my strategy. It doesn't matter any more who does the cooking. I plan to divert my focus from the food and concentrate on giving thanks for the family I have left. There will always be food, but time with family is too short and too precious and I will keep that in the forefront at all times.” —Nancy Kern
“I am not defining the holidays with food. There are things about the holidays that remind me of food and the smells of food that evoke some emotion. More importantly, the holidays for me are family and friends, not food. That said, if I feel some evoking emotion, I will allow myself a tablespoon of whatever it is that I can't seem to live without for the moment. In the off chance that this is not the case, it will be three days, not a lifetime. There are so many more important things in daily living that help keep the food in perspective.” —Carole Morgan
"What is my "game plan" for the holidays? This year I plan to prove to myself that it is actually possible to lose weight during the holiday season. I am down 13 pounds and 14.75 inches. I plan to reach a 7 pound weight loss goal by Jan. 31. My commitment to this goal includes strength training 3x a week, continuing to practice moderation with my food intake and increasing the intensity of my cardio exercise. I recently invested in a Varidesk® for my office. It is an adjustable height sit-stand desk. It is not unusual to find me doing calf raises throughout the work day while I type. I have also become a major fan of green smoothies and even found a healthy smoothie recipe that tastes like pumpkin pie! Bring on the holidays baby. This year…I am ready!” —Amy Susan

Positive Change Journey
SIX SURVIVAL TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY DURING HOLIDAY SEASON
F
or most people the approaching holidays are a complicated mix of fun and festivities, coupled with stress and exhaustion. This combination of emotions, doing too many things, attending events, late nights, and the endless food and drink can destroy even the most dedicated person’s healthy lifestyle. Here are six survival tips to staying healthy:
1
Keep moving! Take at least 6o minutes each day for yourself and plan, prepare, move, unwind. Thirty minutes of resistance training and some form of daily cardiovascular exercise will keep you stress free, increase your energy and burn off extra calories. Use the other 30 in 10 minute increments to plan, prepare and unwind.
2 3
Take a full water bottle with you wherever you roam: shopping, parties, holiday concerts. Stay hydrated to stay healthy.
Invited to a holiday party with lots of high fat foods? Eat small meals packed with lean protein throughout the day to stave off hunger so you don’t overeat at the party.
4 5 6
Stay away from the buffet table. Choose some healthy options or one or two small treats, and then walk away. Drink one cocktail. Drink sparkling water the rest of the evening.
If you are on a day-long shopping trip choose healthier options at restaurants. You can get a list of those healthy options simply by calling me at 269-271-8825 or e-mailing me at elisa@genesisfitwell.com.

Festive Loaves
RECIPES
Mini beet and carrot gift loaves are flecked with carrots and pickled beets, which not only add flavor, but help keep the spicy loaves moist and tender. They make great gifts, drizzled with snow-white glaze and wrapped with festive ribbons and evergreen sprigs. Mini Beet and Carrot Gift Loaves makes four loaves (six servings each) 1 jar (16 ounces) pickled beets, drained 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 2 eggs, beaten 3/4 cup shredded carrots 3/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans Topping: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice Glaze: 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 2 teaspoons milk

Just Beet It Everyone has favorite recipes for the holidays, but it’s fun to add something new to the tried-and-true repertoire. Here are three delicious ideas made with a surprise ingredient – pickled beets. Yes, pickled beets. They are the perfect ruby-red color of the season and their tangy-sweetness complements so many other ingredients. Brands such as Aunt Nellie’s makes it easy; just open the jar and get going.
Combine flour, pie spice, baking powder, baking soda and salt in medium bowl; stir to mix well. Combine brown sugar and oil in large bowl. Stir in eggs. Gradually add flour mixture and mix well. Stir in beets, carrots and nuts just until combined. Spoon batter into pans. Combine topping ingredients in small bowl, stirring until crumbly. Divide evenly over batter. Bake 35-40 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire rack; cool completely. To make glaze, stir together sugar and milk. Drizzle glaze over cooled loaves. Store at room temperature for up to three days. You can also freeze it, unglazed, up to two months. Thaw at room temperature; then drizzle with glaze.
Awesome Appetizers
Baby beet and tortellini appetizers made with baby whole pickled beets are amazing bites of savory flavors. Prosciutto-wrapped tortellini, bite-sized beets and bell peppers create a deliciously simple skewer. Baby Beet & Tortellini Appetizers makes 36 single servings
1/4 pound thinly sliced prosciutto or deli ham
1 package (9 ounces) refrigerated tortellini, any variety, cooked and cooled 2 tablespoons prepared vinaigrette 2 medium bell peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 jar (16 ounces) baby whole pickled beets fresh herbs
Cut prosciutto into 1-inch-by-3-inch strips. Wrap one strip around tortellini; skewer with appetizer pick. Brush lightly with vinaigrette. Add one piece of pepper and one beet to skewer. Repeat until all beets are used. Sprinkle with herbs.

Dawn Johnston, BSN, MBA Flight Nurse at West Michigan Air Care

“
ou have the coolest job in the world” is something I hear a lot and flying in a helicopter is pretty cool. But the intensity of our transports can be grueling and most of us feel pretty wiped out after four or five back-to-back flights. Our patients are either badly injured or very sick and often close to death. That requires compassion, quick thinking, and teamwork from everyone involved. We are trained to be ready for practically every kind of emergency and we land and pick up patients from hospitals, fields, highways, and even front yards. We work quickly with EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement, and hospital care providers to help victims of on- or off-road accidents, falls, gunshot wounds, burns, and industrial accidents. We also treat critically ill patients who experience heart attacks, strokes, poisoning, drowning, and infection with shock, to name a few. Our basic transport crew consists of two flight nurses and an experienced helicopter pilot.
Back at our base in downtown Kalamazoo, a Communications Specialist tracks the helicopter and supports the transport from start to finish. Behind the scenes, our threeman maintenance team keeps the helicopter running smoothly and we lean heavily on our business office staff. Air Care is a nonprofit partnership between Bronson and Borgess and we deliver patients to both of these award-winning hospitals. I love it when it’s a beautiful day for flying, the patient responds well to treatment, and everyone works well together. My favorite part of the job, however, is when patients return to thank us or send us a letter and photo saying, “Remember me? Look how great I’m doing now!” Nothing beats that. My husband, a retail manager, and my son, a computer animation major at KVCC, are both very supportive of my occupation, which greatly reduces my stress

level. I lift weights, and I’ve run seven marathons and many shorter races, including one of those muddy messes. I can also knock out more chin-ups and dips at the gym than most people. My passion is chocolate-covered Brazil nuts. I’m concerned about public health threats like drug abuse, meth explosions, poverty, alcoholism, domestic violence, and child abuse. However, the most widespread public health threat is destruction of our own habitat across the globe and its links to cancer and other illnesses. Finding healthy, sustainable ways of living and doing business is important to me as a nurse because it affects everyone. I was raised on a farm in Missouri and I like being outside close to nature. I love traveling. I’m inspired by kind, helpful, nonjudgmental people. And I really like chocolate!

oliday shopping involves several components; finding the right gift, making sure it’s wrapped, and ensuring it’s delivered with care and on time for the big day. It is satisfying watching someone smile as they receive a gift, but imagine the happiness you’d feel knowing your gift didn’t negatively impact the environment, economy, or your pocket book. Here are a few ways to shop smart this season:
Going green in more ways than one.
Improving the environmental impact of our gifts is easier than you might think. Using canvas bags or reusing plastic bags for shopping will reduce your environmental footprint. In addition, there are plenty of wrapping paper options that are biodegradable or recyclable. A box or gift bag, which are both reusable for years, are good options, too. Repurposing items such newspaper for wrapping paper is a creative way of preparing gifts to add variation under the tree.
Controlling your pocket book.
After the holidays, we always realize we ate too much, but how often do we lament that we spent too much? Writing down a gift list and creating a budget for each person on your list you can prevent overspending. Credit cards are not a good idea unless you are going to pay them off immediately and have a means to do so.

Helping the local economy is important as well when choosing a gift. Spending money at local businesses or on items made in the U.S. keeps money and jobs here. Even when not buying from local small businesses, large businesses do pay taxes and employees. Research the products you are buying prior to shopping is a great idea to keep the cash where it comes from: your community.
Experience is glorious.
A unique way to add variation to gift-giving is delivering an experience. Giving a gift card, gift certificate or tickets to an event or restaurant are perfect ways to prevent waste and clutter. Buying gift cards at local restaurants endorses local spending and supports local businesses, which pay taxes and wages to people living in your community.

W
hether yours twinkle in multiple colors or sparkle all in white, holiday lights are a must-use element in nearly all homeowners’ seasonal decorating schemes. Those lights, which were once reserved for the tree, have migrated to multiple spots both inside and outside the home. As a result, electric bills (and electricity usage!) are climbing. According to the American Lighting Association, most holiday lights are powered by incandescent light sources, despite the known fact that LED lights cost less to operate and maintain. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that the U.S. uses 2.22 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year to power miniature holiday lights. That’s enough electricity for 1,300 homes to be powered for a year! Thankfully, the growing availability of LED holiday lights is decreasing this usage. LED holiday lights have an estimated lifespan of 40 holiday seasons and are more resistant to breakage (thanks to epoxy lenses) than incandescent versions. Say goodbye to annual “string tests” and replacing single bulbs; the longevity of LED lighting will reduce the time and money spent on fixing holiday lighting. In addition to a longer life, LED lights can make an instant impact for everyone by decreasing utility bills and providing a safer light source.

kling atmosphere as reflections work off each other. •
Line the ceiling with a string of mini lights that will provide a soft glow when everything else dims down for the night.
•
Incorporate reflective ornaments and classic silver bells into your light décor. The reflections will add more light to the room without using extra energy.
•
Highlight tree branches, bases, birdbaths and garden pathways with string lights to draw interest to parts of your home’s exterior
Illuminate with LED Lights The 1900s would have been hard without Thomas Edison creating the first, successful incandescent light bulb, but we’ve come a long way since and energy efficient trends have made their way into holiday decorating. Simply switching from incandescent bulbs to LED (light-emitting diodes) lights can save you hundreds of dollars this year. Other than being more durable, longer lasting and safer, as they don’t emit nearly as much heat as the incandescent bulbs, LED lights shine brighter and are easier to install. You can also purchase batterypowered LED lights for the areas that don’t have an outlet nearby.
String Along String lights can be used anywhere, both indoors and outdoors. In the past, string lights have hung on to holiday greenery, but they are now traveling around the home to frame headboards, mirrors, windows and pathways. Mini lights have a modest size that pair nicely with other decorations without overshadowing them. •

A Porch Pot’s Illuminated Welcome If plants are your pride and you feel like the holidays put your hobby on pause, Rick Vuyst, CEO of Flowerland and host of the weekly Flowerland Show on NewsRadio, has good news. “Porch pots are a great way to welcome guests into our home,” said Vuyst, explaining the popular trend that has been showing up on porches throughout the Midwest. A porch pot sits at the front door, welcoming visitors to the home with a visual pleasing plant arrangement. Some trends include two pots standing on each side of the door. Others have one large, decorated pot to one side and some spaces allow you to experiment with multiple pots of different shapes and sizes. Vuyst recommends starting out by gathering evergreen branches and planting them into the soil. There are many different types of evergreens to choose from, and they will act as a good foundation structure.
Once the evergreens are in place, you can add contrast with colorful branches purchased at a local garden retailer, hardware or craft store. Birch, dogwood and ninebark will complement the evergreens, adding color while still looking natural. Add lights or ornaments to finish off your holiday masterpiece. Flowerland carries a cornucopia of pieces that are both decorative and durable for the outdoors. Moving inside, Vuyst reminds us how bringing any plant material indoors decreases stress and improves productivity. Inviting paperwhite narcissus, Amaryllis, holiday cacti and poinsettias into your home will combat that inevitable holiday stress and fill your home with a wonderful fragrance.
Other Trends •
Joining traditional wreaths and Christmas trees are natural textures like burlap, warmed up with soft gold, champagne and cream tones.
•
Frosted themes add elegance with whiteflocked Christmas trees and style décor in silver or champagne.
•
Joining the classic red and green partnership of the holidays are deep purples, pale blues, metallic accessories in gold and silver, and exciting colors like bright pink and rich turquoise.
This holiday season, warm up with something other than hot chocolate and experiment with these new trends and ideas. Lighten up with LEDs, play with porch pots, get rough with burlap and soften with colors. As we approach the finish line of 2014, I wish you happy holidays and, as Vuyst would say, “Seasons Greenings!”

Bundle up the kids, pour yourself a steaming mug of hot cocoa and start your holiday adventure at one of the many tree farms in Southwest Michigan. In the eyes of children they are 30 feet tall!”
What’s Your Favorite Tree? Blue Spruce

Wine Is a Girl’s Best Friend™ C ava ? S ekt ? Pro s e c c o ? S pu m a n t e ? C ha mp ag n e? Fra n c i a c o rt a ? S pa rk li ng Wi ne ! With the holiday season upon us, and much bubbly flowing, it’s a great time to learn about the many faces of Sparkling Wine!
SEKT can be produced by the Charmat or Traditional method. Sparkling wine
made with CO2 injection cannot be called Sekt but are called Schaumwein which translates to "foam wine." Sekt is typically made using Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes.
Spumante and Prosecco and Franciacorta Spumante is from the Piedmont (also called asti or asti spumante) made from the Moscato Bianco grape using Charmat method. Prosecco is from Veneto made with the Glera grape using Charmat method. Franciacorta is from Lombardy made according to the Traditional method utilizing the same grape varieties as Champagne, which are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc (Pinot Bianco in Italian) and Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero in Italian).
Spar kling wine is a wine that is fizzy due to significant levels of carbon dioxide. The fizz (carbon dioxide) may result from:
Champagne Only sparkling wines produced in the region of Champagne, France may utilize the name Champagne as well as "méthode champenoise". Grape varieties used for Champagne are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir.
• Natural fermentation - in a bottle - known as Traditional method or (also known as "méthode champenoise" in Champagne, France) • Natural fermentation - in a large tank - known as Charmat method • Injecting carbon dioxide into the wine (similar to the process that creates fizzy soft drinks)
Sparkling Wine Bubbly wines in the USA are called Sparkling Wine – as are bubbly wines from the Country of Georgia and since the Country of Georgia is considered the birthplace of wine I thought this was a very notable mention! The grape varietals of Bagrationi Sparkling from The Country of Georgia Sparkling include Chinebuli, Tsitska and Mtsvane grapes – which have archeologically been identified to have existed 7000 years ago. Webster’s will be hosting a wine tasting featuring this Sparkling this coming season. Please contact Webster’s or info@SkandisFineWine.com for more details.
Different countries however have different names for this luscious effervescent bubbly wine – and each country has its own set of rules and regulations on how the bubbles can be created in order to be honored with the sparkling term Cava, Sekt, Spumante, Prosecco, Franciacorta, Champagne,
Sparkling Wine.
Cava is a Greek term that was used to refer to a "high
end." Only wines produced in the Traditional method may be labelled Cavas , those produced by other processes may only be called "sparkling wines." Macabeu, Parellada and Xarel-lo are traditional grape varieties for producing Cava . Bagrationi Sparkling from The Country of Georgia

So be adventurous this holiday season and consider trying or gift giving Cava, Sekt, Spumante, Prosecco, Franciacorta, Champagne, Sparkling Wine!
Christine Skandis founded Skandis Fine Wines, LLC for the purpose is preserving heirloom grape varietals – wines the typical consumer has never heard of grapes that could otherwise reach a level of extinction because they are grown in such limited quantities. Christine was inducted into the Dionysian Society International, the world’s oldest wine society, in 2006, only one of six women in the world at the time. I went, and I was hooked!” Kalamazoo’s Mall City Harmonizers group was founded 73 years ago in 1941. ‘Tis the season for some excellent new Christmas and wintry fiction titles. From witty mysteries to heartbreaking historical fiction and even a hot romance in the Upper Peninsula, you’re sure to find the perfect book to snuggle up with this month.
Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas by Stephanie Barron
Winter Street
Barron’s wonderfully wry and witty Jane Austen mystery series is perfect for Austen fans or anyone who enjoys period mysteries. Barron conjures the spirit of Jane Austen with biographical and historical details throughout the fictional stories. This twelfth title in the series is fittingly set during the Twelve Days of Christmas (no need to have read previous series titles before jumping into this one). Jane and her family have been invited to spend the holidays at The Vyne, a gorgeous estate of a wealthy neighbor. Their Christmas celebration, however, soon turns deadly when one of the guests is murdered, and Jane won’t rest easy until they find the culprit.
The holidays wouldn’t be complete without a little family dysfunction, and it’s on full display at the Winter Street Inn on the island of Nantucket. The locals always look forward to the inn’s Christmas party, but it may go on hiatus this year after owner Kelly Quinn catches his second wife kissing the Santa Claus they’ve hired. Their impending split causes Kelly’s adult kids and his first wife to descend on the inn, bringing their own hopes and heartache along. Much crying, eating, drinking, and singing of Christmas carols brings them together and helps them find love and forgiveness in time for Christmas.
A Quilt for Christmas
by Elin Hilderbrand
A New York Christmas by Anne Perry
by Sandra Dallas
Dallas packs her latest novel full of history and heart as she explores the lives of women during Civil War era Kansas. Will Spooner feels it’s his duty to serve in the Union army even though he’ll be leaving his wife Eliza and their two kids alone on their farm. After Will leaves, Eliza takes solace in her quilting and makes a special quilt for Will, which she hopes will make its way to him for Christmas. As the war continues, Eliza and her quilting circle friends await news of their husbands and help each other make ends meet. They find strength in their friendship as they try to do what is right in the midst of war, even if it’s something as dangerous as helping a slave escape, but Eliza’s courage is put to the ultimate test when the quilt returns to her in a very unexpected way.
Jemima Pitt, daughter of sleuths Charlotte and Thomas Pitt from Perry’s popular Victorian mystery series, gets her own story in this thoroughly enjoyable mystery set during Christmastime in historic New York City. Jemima is chaperoning wealthy Phinnie Cardew from London to New York City, where Phinnie will be marrying Brent Albright. The Albrights are a powerfully intimidating family who are very concerned about society’s opinion. When Phinnie’s estranged mother Marie poses a threat to the Albright reputation, Brent’s brother Harley solicits Jemima’s help in persuading Marie to stay away from Phinnie. Instead Jemima finds a dead woman in Marie’s bed, and she’s soon under suspicion. Investigating to clear her name and finding an unexpected ally in policeman Patrick Flannery, Jemima soon discovers dangerous secrets and love in the process.
Featured Local Author Worth the Effort by Mara Jacobs Despite not being set during Christmas, this novel features the wonderfully wintry backdrop of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Deni is the only female engineer at a small firm in the UP, but she doesn’t mind since it gives her the opportunity to live in beautiful Copper Country. When the firm’s mysterious silent partner is called in to help them land a big project, Deni is surprised at their instant attraction, but can they move beyond their pasts and create a future together? Readers will definitely want to make the effort to check this steamy romance out. Its hot scenes will keep you plenty warm this winter. Forever a Yooper, author Mara Jacobs now splits her time between Las Vegas, the Copper Country and the East Lansing area, where she is better able to root on her beloved Spartans.
About the Author As Kent District Library’s Collection Development Manager, Melissa DeWild loves finding great fiction titles to buy for the library. At home, you’ll find her nose in a book when she’s not baking some form of chocolate or playing with her kids.

Marilyn and Clifford Pulley
Marilyn Pulley spent her whole life caring for others. But it was her husband, Clifford, who helped her realize she also needed to take care of herself. Marilyn was hesitant. She didn’t like going to the doctor. That’s where listening and compassion made all the difference. At Borgess, she connected with a doctor she can trust. Now she can’t imagine going anywhere else.
