From the Publisher Happy Valentine’s Day! According to the Beatles…. “All you need is love!” and overall I believe that! Of course, a few extra’s like some dollars in our pockets and looking great always helps. But what gets us up and out of bed most days is love: love of family always, home and lifestyle usually and that ever desirable love of a significant “other.” So as we enter February – the month of love we are pleased to present another great read with lots of delicious recipes and ideas. And in keeping with that theme – our 2013 Annual Bridal Guide is included for those of you lucky enough to be part of a wedding this year. And we love everything about that special wedding day. We hope you’ll find lots of helpful tips. Enjoy! In thinking about love, I find others have left behind words that are far more eloquent and meaningful than anything I could create. So I leave you with these pearls of wisdom.
“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” - Mother Teresa “we accept the love we think we deserve.” - Stephen Chbosky, “You don’t love someone because they’re perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they’re not.” - Jodi Picoult Happy Valentines! Always know that you are loved.

A Story of Spirit & Entrepreneurship Area Furniture Store Turns 75 Co-founde nder, Anthony Vandenberg erg with wife, Janet and their eir children. Cal (Current own owner) is in cente nter.
I
t all began in 1937 when two brothers decided that the people in the Kalamazoo area deserved a new place to buy home furnishings. And what started as a small furniture store in the Washington Square neighborhood quickly grew in size and customer demands, driving the store to move three times before settling in at its current location on US 131, just north of Schoolcraft. 75 years later Vandenberg Furniture is still thriving – a testament to the entrepreneur-spirit of the Vandenberg family and to their dedication to serving the area.
furniture business from the ground up, Cal was more than ready to take Vandenberg Furniture to the next level in serving its many customers in the Kalamazoo area and beyond.
Entrepreneurship is what drives this family today – and what inspired the Vandenberg brothers, Anthony and Dewey, to open the store back in 1937 in Kalamazoo. With a focus on furniture design, Anthony was a graduate of the Kendall School of Art in Grand Rapids (Now Kendall College of Art And Design of Ferris State University). After graduation, Anthony continued his craft, and his wood carving skills can still be seen today in the Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C.
Vandenberg Furniture still carries only the best in contemporary home furnishings – including the popular lines, of Flexsteel, Ashley, England, Vaughan Bassett and many more. With a stunning showroom that covers over 27,000 square feet, \nlmhf^kl pbee ]^eb`am bg Ûg]bg` [^Znmb_ne bedroom collections, Amish dining sets and a multitude of reclining sofas and reclining chairs.

A Different Kind of Courage Courageous Hearts ‘Tis the month of hearts, so let’s start with a few hearty facts: – The human heart beats more than 3 billion times over the course of an average lifetime (that’s more than the number of grains in a handful of sand). – The ancients thought that the heart was the physical home of the soul, supplying the rest of the body with a life force. Consequently, they drew anatomical pictures with the heart at the center of the body and everything else connected to and radiating from it. – February has been officially dubbed American Heart Month by the American Heart Association (clever of them!). – And then there’s the best known February/heart link - Valentine’s Day. It was in 18th century England that Valentines were first decorated with hearts and lace and sent to loved ones. But the heart is also connected to my favorite subject: courage (you knew it was coming, right?) The word courage comes from the Latin word for heart – cor. At a time when the heart was the common metaphor for inner strength around the 12th century, courage was defined as “speaking one’s mind by telling all in one’s heart.” At about the same time, the phrase “to have the heart of a lion,” popped up. It’s a description of someone who refuses to give up and shows exceptional courage or bravery.
So, here you are, filled up with so much trivia you’re about to burst. Let me see if I can pull it all together for you. Sometimes courageous acts aren’t the big ones we think of, the ones that get headlines and TV coverage. Sometimes they’re the small things that come straight from the heart, like a child who has a bake sale or a lemonade stand and donates the money to a good cause. Or the elderly man who goes without a new winter coat so he can buy one for a shivering child. Certainly, it’s the woman who’s battling a disease but finds inner strength in helping others who are also ill. These are not only courageous acts, they have a lot of heart in them. And we just don’t see enough of them. Most of us were brought up to never toot our own horns, so we’re rather shy about sharing acts of courageous heart. But since we learn from example, the more acts like these that are heard about or witnessed, the more likely they are to be repeated. And that’s a good thing. During this “Month of the Heart,” I challenge you to commit one act of courageous heart each week. I also challenge you to share them with me (info@courageconcepts.com). I’ll keep them anonymous, I promise, but I’d like to describe them in upcoming blogs or newsletters. Together, we’ll put a little heart in every month this year!
Judy Pearson is the founder of Courage Concepts, an organization which fosters courage in women through seminars and Courage Conventions. Judy is also the author of magazine and newspaper articles, as well as two books about ordinary people who exhibited extraordinary courage. www.courageconcepts.com

A Wellness Approach To True Beauty Development
In January, we introduced you to our Make-Over 2013 winner: Margaret Sanders Banks, an elementary school teacher in Paw Paw. Every day she deals with health issues that affect the way she looks and feels about herself. Her journey continues… - Kelly Duggan KDI Margaret’s journey using a wellness approach to beauty has truly begun. As her makeover consultant, I am so blessed to be a part of her journey. After just a few meetings, Margaret has begun to blossom. She even asked that I correct her age – proud that she’s 56 versus the 52 stated in our first announcement. Week 2 – Dr. Dennis met with Margaret and a treatment plan is in place and appointments have been started to complete her beautiful smile. Week 3 – Margaret had her first personal style development session today. We completed assessments for color, body proportion and clothing personality and created a foundation for building Margaret’s wardrobe, facilitating accessory selections and grooming decisions.
Homework assignment: I asked Margaret to consider her current wardrobe from a new perspective and begin a ‘style file’. She will pull magazine pictures of garments and looks that she likes or that best represent her style. (I must say I had fun giving this dedicated teacher her own homework assignments!) Week 4 – In session we delivered Margaret’s personal virtual style assistant – MyProfessionalStylist. She will be able to refer to it any time that she has a question about what style of garment is best for her body shape. Additionally we….. Ask the Doctor If you wear red on Feb. 1 you will be helping celebrate the 10th anniversary of ma^ :f^kb\Zg A^Zkm :llh\bZmbhg l @h K^] for Women campaign to raise awareness about women and heart disease. The annual campaign draws attention to one glaring and often over-looked reality: Heart disease kills 450,000 women each year in the United States and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. That in mind, Dr. Alicia M. Williams, Z [hZk] \^kmbĂ›^] \Zk]bheh`blm pbma ma^ Borgess Heart Center for Excellence and Borgess Heart Institute, answers questions Z[hnm phf^g l a^Zkm ]bl^Zl^ Zg] pZrl mh k^]n\^ Z i^klhg l kbld' 1. Q: Is heart disease a cause of concern for women in Michigan? A: Absolutely. The American Heart Association reports that heart disease and stroke account for one in every three female deaths in Michigan each year. Heart disease alone is the leading cause of female deaths in the state -- 11,355 women in 2009. 2. Q: Heart disease is a greater problem for men, right? A: No. More women die of heart disease than men in the U.S. with one female death about every minute. 3. Q: What are the signs of a heart attack in women? A: As with men, the most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain or discomfort that persists or comes and goes. But women are more likely to have other common symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea/ vomiting and back or jaw pain. Others may break out in a cold sweat and lightheadedness. 4. Heart disease affects women of all ages although the risk does increase with age. A combination of birth control pills and smoking, for example, raises heart disease risk by 20%. Over-eating and a sedentary lifestyle in younger women can set the stage for problems later in life.

Q: Heart disease runs in my family. Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk? A: Absolutely. If you smoke, quit. See your doctor for routine checkups. Reduce stress. Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Add walking, swimming, biking or other exercise to your daily routine -- at least 15 minutes a day. Create a little time each day for meditation, prayer, deep breathing, yoga or tai chi.
5. Q: What should I do if I have the symptoms you describe? Chocolate!
Most women love chocolate and consider it a guilty pleasure, one well worth the dietary splurge. But what if I told you that chocolate, the real stuff, is not only amazing to eat, but is good for your health? There is rock solid research that tells us that there is simply no good reason to deprive ourselves of this divinely decadent treat! In a Yale University trial, 45 adults were given chocolate to eat. Their blood pressure was checked both before and after eating the chocolate and results revealed that just two hours after eating chocolate, the subjects’ blood pressure dropped and their blood flow improved. Another study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed that people who ate dark chocolate every day for a week saw their blood pressure drop and the lower blood pressure was maintained as long as they continued to eat dark chocolate. However, once they stopped eating chocolate routinely, their blood pressure began to rise again. Scientists determined that chocolate is capable of triggering the production of nitric oxide in the blood, which is responsible for relaxing and dilating blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.

The antioxidants in chocolate also slow down the process of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and help prevent arterial injury. Trials have also shown that chocolate offers an effect similar to baby aspirin, but at a slightly lower magnitude. One word of caution, though. Not all things labeled, “chocolate” are good for us. White chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate syrups, instant chocolate drinks and premixed hot cocoa mixes may not contain the compounds that improve blood vessel function. In order to be sure you are obtaining the healthful benefits real chocolate contains, you need to consume either dark chocolate or good old cocoa powder (the kind you find in the baking aisle in the cute can).

WHEN I STARTED FEELING DIZZY AND LIGHT-HEADED,
I SHOULD’VE LISTENED TO MY HEART. At fi rst, I downplayed my symptoms. But after learning I had a bad heart valve, I turned to Bronson. Their cardiac surgery program is rated best in the region.* And despite having major heart surgery, I was home in a few days. *Healthgrades, 2013. Region is southwest Michigan as defined by Michigan Department of Transportation.
