Successful Beauty:
A Chat with Miss America
J
by Nadira Kharmai photography by Two Eagles Marcus
ust two weeks before she was crowned as Miss America, Mallory Hagan was waiting tables at a seafood restaurant in Manhattan. Humble, hardworking and ambitious are mere understatements to describe this year’s pageant winner. As we chatted over breakfast at six. one.six inside the JW Marriott, it became evident that her life; even before earning the coveted crown, has been dedicated to leadership and learning. Regardless of whether or not you’re into pageantry, Hagan is both motivating and moving. During her year-long reign as Miss America, Hagan is the spokesperson for Amway; the pageant sponsor and the reason she visited Grand Rapids. She works 12 hour days and travels nearly 20 thousand miles across North America for interviews, fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network (the Miss America Organization’s official charity), meeting with leaders and spending time working on her platform; child sexual abuse. You and I aren’t scholarship competition winners, but Hagan still holds us accountable to our impact in this world. “We can all make a positive difference through what we’re passionate about,” Hagan insists. Today’s woman in America is shouldering high expectations. While our society is working on re-constructing the everyday woman’s roles, there is still a sense that women need to be reserved in some facets (politics, leadership, overall decision-making). This doesn’t stop Hagan at all. In fact, this 23-year-old not only encompasses the famed four points of the crown, (that’s a Miss America competition reference; service, style, scholarship and success) but she also conveys a relatable and approachable personality. “It’s important to encourage and teach young women to be the best, well-rounded individuals they can be,” Hagan exclaims while describing what makes today’s woman successful. Her opinions on inner strength and leadership challenge the stereotypes of a typical beauty queen. “There should be a balance between education, fitness, philanthropy, and developing hobbies.” She points out that there needs to be more mentors in students’ lives, from high school through college, to help shape more female leaders. Although she isn’t taking classes right now, Hagan’s dream is to return to the Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue a degree in cosmetics and fragrance marketing. “We need those leaders in science, math and technology to step up and show young women the interesting, fun and artistic types of professions that are out there because of biomed, chemistry, and math classes.” Part of Hagan’s success comes from her experiences. She’s been a pageant competitor since she was 13 years-old. Although she represented the state of New York during the Miss America competition, she is originally from the small town of Opelika, Alabama. “I try to channel things I’ve learned from different areas of my life; tap dancing, moving to New York and taking classes from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and spending time with my mentors; to shape who I am.” Another part of Hagan’s success comes from her willingness to embrace diversity. “I grew up in my mother’s dance studio, so I was around many different people all the time; people of color, gay people...it’s all normal to me.” Hagan shares. I was pleasantly surprised and grateful to learn our 2013 Miss America is a proud advocate for equal rights. In fact, she co-hosted an equal rights event, “A Salute to Straight Allies,” in New York. “I don’t believe anyone has the right to infringe on anyone else’s happiness,” Hagan smiles.

Balancing Home and Work Priorities
Salary and career advancement
Having a well-paying job is a major concern for most people, but it’s no secret that there’s often a gender gap when it comes to pay. Getting paid less affects not only your current paycheck, but also your long-term asset accumulation. For example, the less you earn, the less money you have to contribute to your retirement plan, and potentially the lower the amount of matching employer contributions you’ll receive. In addition, because current salary is the benchmark for future pay increases and bonuses (which are often expressed as a percentage of your salary), the effect of a pay gap is cumulative.
important predictors of job satisfaction and success. Here are a few questions you may want to consider when deciding if a job or company is a good fit:
• What advancement opportunities exist?
• Make sure expectations are clear, both at home and at work. If you’re working offsite, will you be expected to work during certain hours? Does your family understand your work routine?
• How many women in the company hold leadership positions? Does the company have any initiatives in place to address this?
• Be proactive in communications with your boss and colleagues. Consider how they might be affected by your arrangement, but don’t hesitate to ask for what you need to be successful.
Many employers have transparent compensation practices and are happy to share salary ranges or pay scales, the criteria for pay adjustments, and the timetable for compensation review. You may also want to check out Internet salary websites to get an idea of a typical salary range for someone in your occupation and geographical location. You may also benefit from honing your negotiation skills. It’s possible that you might be missing out on pay raises, not because they’re unavailable, but because you haven’t effectively communicated what you want or need. Here are a few tips: • Be prepared to articulate your strengths and specific achievements. What unique skills and qualities do you bring to the table? • Clearly communicate not only your salary requirements, but also what you offer the company in return. • Don’t assume that the first salary or pay increase you’re offered is the last. Be prepared to counteroffer. In addition to pay, bonuses, and other tangible rewards, nontangible rewards such as career opportunities and a supportive culture are
recognizing that providing work-life balance programs are key to having a diverse, genderneutral workforce. Here are some tips that can help you make a flexible arrangement work:
• Are career development opportunities available, such as management training, mentorship programs, or networking opportunities?
Work-life balance
Balancing the demands of career and family is one of the major issues people face during their working years. It’s not surprising that without someone at home to handle family and household responsibilities, women who work full-time often face the paradox of having to be their family’s “CEO” while also striving to be seen as CEO material at work. Fortunately, the traditional workplace is changing. Employers are increasingly
• Stay flexible. Your needs and your employer’s needs may change over time, and the terms of your arrangement may need to be adjusted. While workplace flexibility is gaining momentum, some employers have not yet embraced the concept, and some jobs or industries aren’t well-suited to it. But you can still strive to better integrate your home and work lives. At home, ask your family members for help with household responsibilities-you really can’t do it all yourself--or if you can afford it, consider hiring someone to help out. At work, look for opportunities to network with women who have faced similar challenges, and help support them by sharing your experiences and tips. And don’t expect perfection Balancing career and family is always a work in progress. Sandy K. Derby, CFP®, ChFC™ has been in the financial services industry since 1989. Gorgeous, Gluten-free and Less Toxic
from Head-to-Toe disclose their fragrance ingredients, even if they contain potential allergens or harmful chemicals, as long as they meet the standards of the word, “fragrance” and as long as their levels are “safe.” Research has shown, however, that we women use as many as 515 chemicals on our skin through different products. Is this safe? You tell me. Gluten is only harmful to those who are sensitive to it, but some of these chemicals are harmful to everyone.
A
h, the pretty little bottles on your bathroom shelves. I used to arrange mine to display perfectly: logos front, colors coordinated, and carefully chosen for aesthetic appeal. One day, I turned them around. Their ingredients read like a James Joyce novel. Daunting and unrepentant with long words that I had to look up. Even some of my favorite “natural” product ingredients translated into scary chemicals. What I didn’t expect to find was that my toothpaste, lotions, shampoos, make up, and nail polish contained gluten. No wonder I was feeling like crap. Another piece of the puzzle of healing fell into place. My own body was in a constant, mid-grade allergic reaction because of what I put on my skin. You might say, “I don’t eat lotion. What’s the big deal?” Think about it this way. You wash your hands and immediately put on lotion. A few minutes later you prep a chicken, cut vegetables, and kneed the dough for some fabulous gluten-free muffins. You wash your hands again and use lotion. You eat the roast chicken and lick your fingers. If your lotion or lipstick contains gluten, and it probably does, it just became an ingredient to your meal. Researchers believe that gluten particles are too large to enter through the skin, but they can get into our blood stream through our eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Plus, many people are skin-sensitive to gluten. Look for hidden gluten in ingredients like Tocopherol or Vitamin E, since both are often derived from wheat or barley (aka, “gluten”). If your favorite labels make your eyes cross, consider something else. Your skin is your largest organ and it is very absorbent. That’s why the smoker’s or hormone patches work. Current laws for beauty products still have some gaping loopholes, which allow for a mindboggling number of cancer-linked chemicals and hormone disrupters that CAN be absorbed into your system through your skin. For instance, “fragrance” is considered a trade secret, so companies don’t have to

FACIAL WASH & LOTIONS: Keys Island Rx Foaming Facial Wash Keys Tortuga or Luminos Facial Lotion (Night) Keys Solar Rx Facial Lotion (Day) I love, love, love Keys products. They are gluten-free, chemical and preservative free, and vegan. My skin feels nourished. TOOTHPASTE: Desert Essence Organics – Natural Tea Tree Oil and Neem Toothpaste Believe it or not, many types of toothpaste contain hidden gluten and I was not looking forward to the switch. But I was shocked at how much I liked Dessert Essence toothpaste. My teeth feel cleaner than with most commercial brands, so I’m super pleased. NAIL POLISH & REMOVER: Keeki Pure and Simple I met owner (and Michigan girl) Natalie Bausch at a gluten-free fair, and was intrigued that one of her inspirations for creating a gluten-free, non-toxic nail polish was that young girls tend to bite their nails. “ Me Time” Author: Ann Mohr
When was the last time you spent a week… just taking care of yourself? If I told you there was an affordable place you could go, within a ten hour drive from home, where you could spend your time solely taking care of yourself in body, spirit and mind,
what would you say? Would you say “Oh, that’s nice, but I can’t get away like that?” Really? Not even for a long weekend or with a friend? There’s a place in the heart of Tennessee that’s known as the TFS. Tennessee Fitness Spa is located just two hours southwest of Nashville at the scenic Natural Bridge. It offers the perfect getaway for anyone seeking a path to losing weight, getting fit and spending time reconnecting with themself. Nestled in a beautiful natural setting and offering affordable rates, all provided with their distinctive brand of southern hospitality, TFS has something for everyone. Its aim is to provide guests with the opportunity to make
lifestyle changes in a clean, natural setting and to provide a sound, basic program based on good nutrition and exercise. The amazing staff is dedicated to providing a wide range of fitness activities and educational workshops, including growing your own food, healthy cooking and self defense. And yes, you can also enjoy optional pampering services such as facials, massages and the like. When I first heard about TFS, I was curious. I had never experienced anything like this. As I looked at their website (tfs.com) and saw a special week just for sisters, I began to dream a dream. As adults, with one sister living in Florida, while the other two of us live within 40 minutes of each other, only once in our adult lifetime had we had the opportunity of a “Sisters’ Week” where we could reconnect. Why not this way? Why not get fit together? Given that our family isn’t blessed with a lot of (if any!) skinny genes and given that we aren’t prone to working out…it seemed like an idea whose time had come. And so we began to make our plans. The first Saturday in August, the Northern sisters drove to Nashville to pick up our “Southern Belle” who arrived Sunday. After lunch, we begin the scenic drive on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Just as we start to wonder if we’ve taken a wrong turn somewhere, it seems we have arrived. We are clearly out in the middle of “nowhere”! I watch as my cell phone bars go into hiding. Wow…I suddenly feel very vulnerable! No cell phone? What if we ARE lost? Just as the panic sets in for real, we see the stone gates indicating we have arrived. After driving for another mile down a winding road, we approach the office where we are greeted and told that supper will be served shortly. Weighins and assessments will be done first thing tomorrow morning. Our accommodations are very comfortable, neat and clean, making us feel right at home. At dinner, we learn that we will be eating a healthy, low sodium diet for the entire week and that our calories will be severely restricted to 1200. We immediately go on alert! We don’t know what we thought would
16

happen, but as we have a “vacation” mind-set, somehow dieting wasn’t on the radar. Each of us has her own fears: will there be any chocolate, one is going to miss the salt immensely and one is sure there will be way too many vegetables. This is going to be an interesting week!
Monday: We are up at 5:45. Breakfast starts at
6:45 and ends at 7:45. On 1200 calories a day, it is suddenly important that we get nourishment! Stretching begins at 7:45 for the three levels of walking groups. Two of us decide to join the “slowest” level of walkers and the third heads for the workout room to learn the equipment. Next up is water walking followed by water aerobics. Mid-morning we weigh in and finish our assessments. Hungry already, we stop by the cafeteria for our healthy, mid-morning snack. Then it’s back to the pool for more water workouts… which are quickly becoming our favorite form of exercise. One of the things we are looking forward to is trying all the various workout activities. On the first day, full of enthusiasm, we take part in Yoga, Pilates, Meditation and Zumba. I love the Yoga, not so much the Pilates and Mediation. Zumba will need a second try to determine if my two left feet will ever get it! We especially value this opportunity to try out things without having to pay for eight weeks of classes just to see if it works. At dinner, we quickly determine that we have more hunger than food. Hmm….this is hard. As we introduced ourselves around the room, we also notice how many guests are return guests and that some come and stay for long periods of time (one woman had been there for a month.) We wonder why, why would anyone repeat weeks of workouts and strict dieting? We continue to exercise well into the evening and then take a quick dip in the pool followed by the hot tub for our aching muscles and tired spirits. The first day is done and we feel very accomplished.
Tuesday: Up at 5:45 again, we realize we have
a routine already. Breakfast, stretching and then two of us walk and the other heads for the weight

out from house to house so we find very few that are open that afternoon. However, we enjoy the scenery and find a few wonderful antique stores that we all enjoy. We have also determined that we will eat out for the evening meal and find a local establishment that has great food without taking us too far off our dietary restrictions.
Wednesday: Up at 5:45,
eating, stretching and into our workouts. Sadly, this time my sister injures her knee and we turn back from our hike. TFS always has a spotting/water vehicle roaming as the groups are out walking, so very shortly, Big Sister has a ride back to grounds and is soon feeling much better! Thank goodness.
room. As we walk and enjoy nature, we try to save enough breathe for “sister talk” but often we just walk quietly together and view the wonderful scenery: little country church on the hill, cows grazing in the pasture and the native greenery and flowers. Again we hit the pool till noon for the water aerobic, aqua abs and aqua noodle workout. We are so energized by the instructor, the amazing blue of the water and how light our bodies feel that we are able to work out for hours without feeling the pain. That is, however, until we step out of the water. Still, we feel incredibly successful.
Mid-day: We have decided to go site-seeing
and get away for a while. We want to spend some “normal” vacation time seeing the sights and, of course, shopping. Reading that there is an Amish community close by – we head straight for that. Unlike our local Amish community, this is spread
Today’s routine continues with one pleasant change. It is the day of massages for two out of three sisters. What a wonderful surprise after so much exercise. They are refreshed and ready to go. We have also discovered that the evening dip in the pool followed by the hot tub is the highlight of our day. We take a class in natural gardening and eating taught by Dean Ware. He inspires us to go home and take another look at our gardens and our cooking. We are amazed at the depth of his knowledge on these subjects.
Thursday: After another round of morning
workouts we take the afternoon off for more shop-
ping, lunch and a visit to a nearby Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald about 20 miles from the Spa. We have a wonderful dinner at a local BBQ joint.
Friday: Although we are staying till Sunday
morning, Friday feels like the last official day of work outs. Many others are leaving today so the group will be smaller on Saturday. They offer more down time activities – like a movie night with popcorn. We are determined to make it a full day of exercise so we add some afternoon activities like more swimming and I even get involved in some Wallyball. The other guests are very kind as I prove that it’s been a long time since I’ve done something like this. We spend the afternoon exploring the natural wonders around us: the natural bridge, the ice cave and the rest of the grounds.
Saturday: A last day of routine – it’s bitter
sweet. But we push on – breakfast, weight room, water aerobics and snacks. In the afternoon, I persuade one of the sisters to walk the river with me in search of memory rocks to place in our gardens at home. Of course, the river is beautiful but the two Yankee girls are leery of Water Moccasins…so we carry big sticks. Last is the anticipated weigh-in and assessment. We are so amazed. We have lost somewhere between 4 – 7 pounds each and reduced inches by 11 – 14 (whole body) accumulative inches each. This is truly rewarding. After all the blood, sweat and whining we now understand why so many return – year after year. And somewhere inside, I know that I have just joined those ranks. And I hope that my Sisters will too!

CAREER
Style Inserting Personal
In The Workplace
R
by Kim Monaghan
Mother May I?
emember when mom wouldn’t let you wear that leather mini skirt to school because it was too short? The most frustrating thing was it was the coolest piece of your wardrobe. Heck, everyone was wearing them including the trend setters and hottest celebs. So why wouldn’t mom cave?
We can all remember when we couldn’t wait to grow up so we could do what we want, go where we pleased, and of course, wear whatever we choose. Now that we are old enough to wear that rockin’ mini skirt, we’re once again censored by our employer’s “business appropriate” dress policy. So uncool! Freedom of personal expression is what makes our country strong, so why should it matter in the workplace? Well, whether we like it or not, just like mom, employers also have good reasons to monitor just how much we insert our personal style in the workplace. And guess what? We do, too. Here are just a few:
Promotable
Would you rather promote a polished professional or one that looks like they just rolled out of bed? It’s a fact. Looking the part increases your chances of being promoted especially in the business and services sector. It’s not about forgoing personal style, but modifying tastes to make positive impressions. Ellen and Lisa are two prime examples. Both bank managers poised for a promotion. Lisa has a pair of colored skinny jeans for every day of the week with shoes and tops to match. Ellen dons neutral suits but amps them up with brightly colored shells, stylish jewelry and an exotic shoe collection. Ellen knew her clientele expected her to look successful, competent and professional while Lisa, still very stylish in her expensive wardrobe, chose clothing that screamed “weekend.” Guess who got promoted? You got it, Ellen - the one who knows the importance of a good first impression.
Safety
Yes, there is a mountain of legal fodder when it comes to dress codes in the work place. Some precedents support employers decisions while others defend employees freedom of expression. Still, the policies implemented by human resource departments exist for reasons beyond “censorship.” These “rules” are there to protect employees from other legal concerns like sexual harassment policies, toxic workplaces and violations of personal safety. For example, there are potential health and business concerns that may stem from wearing perfumes in small workspaces, lighting candles, burning incense that drives away customers and, to be blunt, neglecting care of personal odor. Still, employers do need to be aware of the risks involved in implementing policies that limit personal expression or religious freedom in the workplace.
Appropriate
Tammy was proud of her cubicle. The brightly colored posters, fun interactive gizmos and dazzling door beads, made her smile as it reminded her of her teenage bedroom. Tammy also adopted a playful and youthful style by including the latest trends of young celebrities. But no one, including Tammy’s supervisor, was impressed. In the first place, Tammy was a front desk manager for a busy insurance firm. Secondly, Tammy was 48 years old. What might seem somewhat harmless can eventually be quite costly. The potential for workplace conflict, customer loss and a stalled or tanked career may all stem from Tammy’s bad choices. Perhaps, when it comes to making career-related style decision, maybe the best advice still comes from mom. If it’s a look that she’d be proud of then odds are it will be well received at work.

The Skinny on
Detox

flushed out of your body. But realize, there are positive side effects too. In most cases, people become aware of an overwhelming energy surge and a feeling of rejuvenation. You shouldn’t jump in all at once though, it can be unsafe if done improperly.
W
e’ve all heard of celebrity detox, the way famous people shed pounds through flushing the toxins out of their body. Everyone seems to have a program; Dr. Oz, Beyonce, and a plethora more on the internet. There are colon cleanses, supplements, the lemon detox diet, the seven day detox, raw diets, the hallelujah diet, and liver cleansing diets just to name a few. How do you chose? It was easy for me to succumb to the myth of detox as a time to fast, eat nothing and deprive yourself of all nutrition. Or, perhaps, you could indulge in juice smoothies and water. However, my perception was dispelled a bit as I soon found out after researching the new craze. The process of detoxifying your body needs to be done safely and slowly. There can be some bumps in the road, of course. A few side effects include nausea, sweating, headaches, and muscle aches. These occur as toxins are

Upon review of the Martha’s Vineyard Detox diet, it purports 21 days in which you could lose 21 pounds. This detox is based significantly on drinking a large amount of berry shakes and sticking to a very strict diet. The Lemonade Detox diet Beyonce made famous suggests a mixture of lemon water and maple syrup for 10 days. Beyonce has been reported as saying she doesn’t recommend this, however she lost 20 pounds using this method. It’s not a long term solution and it’s not completely safe. After talking to a local detox expert, Margaux Drake of WOTV 4 Healthy Eats, detox has cleared up a menagerie of problems for her personally including acne and asthma. Others have attested that detox has assisted with cholesterol, diabetes, depression, as well as high blood sugar. It is also beneficial for losing weight but the emphasis on detox is on healthy living and continuing the process of healthy eating. Margaux’s philosophy is that detox should “kick start in a healthy lifestyle.” She has her own detox program which lasts four weeks. In her words, “It’s 28 days to carve out a discipline in your life and your body that will help direct you afterward.”
She also explains, “Detox can be compared to house cleaning. There are certain things you do everyday, once a week, and once a year. For example, you want your oven clean, but you don’t scrub it everyday.” When I go on a diet it’s been a temporary solution, when in fact it should be a lifestyle change. Margaux cautions however, that when you cut certain items out of your diet, you reintroduce them slowly, like meat or dairy. There are lots of programs available for detoxing and if you wish to detox you must be sure to pick the one that is right for you. Anther recommendation includes consulting a physician before taking on any detox program as there are certain health conditions that should be monitored. Typical detox diets contain no meat, no dairy, and basically raw fruits and vegetables. Detoxing can do wonders for your skin, hair, and nails. Always remember, beauty is only skin deep, but healthy goes right to the bone.

In a few simple steps, moms and newborns can share
the gift of life
A mother’s joy of holding her healthy newborn in her arms for the first time is one of the most amazing moments. Now imagine this euphoria with an added bonus: the opportunity to pay this gift forward and save a life by donating the blood stem cells from the baby’s umbilical cord. Literally within the first few minutes of a newborn’s life, the mother and child can be making a difference for a stranger next door, or on the opposite side of the globe. The decision to donate umbilical cord blood was simple for MacKenzie and Jamie Stuck. Their son Elliott was born in February at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo. “We felt that if something was otherwise going to waste, if it could save someone’s life, there’s
no reason not to donate,” MacKenzie says. It was a decision the Stucks made a few months before MacKenzie’s due date when they signed up for cord blood donation. Mary Burroughs, Supervisor of Michigan Blood’s Cord Blood Bank, points out the collection does not interfere with birthing. “Collection is quick, simple, and free of charge to the patient. There is no risk or pain for either the mother or baby -- and moms who deliver by C-section also can donate their cord blood.” Fifteen Michigan hospitals, including Borgess and Bronson in Kalamazoo, work with Michigan Blood to collect donations. For people with certain lifethreatening diseases like leukemia and lymphoma, a transplant of stem cells from cord blood or marrow may represent the best hope for survival. The blood stem cells (not to be confused with embryonic stem cells) are tested, frozen and stored at Michigan Blood. They are listed on the Be the Match® registry, a global resource for matching cord blood with unrelated patients who need blood stem cell transplants. Cords which are not donated are treated as bio waste and discarded. “As a mom, I would
hope if it was ever my child in need, we would find a lifesaving match because other families had made the choice to donate to the public cord blood bank,” says MacKenzie Stuck. How to donate: Expectant mothers interested in donating their newborn’s umbilical cord blood stem cells should contact Michigan Blood (1-866-MIBLOOD or 616.233.8604) and request a collection kit be sent to them. Michigan Blood confirms each expectant mother’s donation intentions with her physician or midwife, and sends a courier to the hospital after delivery.

Fact vs. Fiction: Top 5 misconceptions about laser hair removal busted 1. Doesn’t treat all skin types
Today there are more advanced technologies which deliver a wide range of treatments for effective hair removal on all skin types. Each treatment focuses on the individual, and the system prompts a series of questions about the person’s skin tone and overall makeup to help determine optimal settings for best results. It is important to note that if you are considering laser hair removal, you should first work closely with a skincare consultant to understand what treatment options work best for your individual skin.
2. Too painful
No pain no gain? Technology in laser hair removal has enabled a more comfortable experience for those nervous about the “ouch” factor. It delivers an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin, delivering a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the area.
3. Too expensive
While laser hair removal does require a more substantial upfront investment, long-term results significantly trump traditional routines such as shaving or waxing. Studies have shown that women spend, on average, $10,000 on shaving over their lifetime, with waxing more than doubling the investment, especially when done by a professional. Laser hair removal can help save time and money over the course of a lifetime, and aesthetic service providers offer a true personalized experience based on real, effective and achievable results.
4. Requires frequent clinic visits and treatments
Treatments may be separated by a window of four to 12 weeks depending on the treatment area and the individual’s hair regrowth cycle, making longterm hair removal a much less tedious and time consuming task.
5. Need to let unsightly hair grow between treatments Laser treatments target the root of the hair rather than the surface hair so you are able to shave in between treatments and not worry about growing any unsightly hair.

Simple Tips
To Glam Up Your Look with Janette Ewen, courtesy of Brandpoint
M
ost women would agree that getting ready for a night out on the town is much more exciting than getting ready for a typical day. Dressing up, adding some shine or a little extra sparkle to your outfit can give your mood a boost whether it’s for a special occasion or a regular day. If you’re concerned that dressing up your daily ensemble will take your look over the top, remember that it’s all about adding the right touches. Think of it as bringing added interest to a basic look, rather than wearing the same items you’d wear to a party. And if you are headed to a special event, some extra touches can make your look that much more show-stopping. “Adding a bit of glamour to any outfit serves two purposes,” says Janette Ewen, style expert for Pandora Jewelry. “It gives an added touch of refinement - and fun - to your workday looks, but it also makes you feel special. When you’re well dressed, you feel your best it’s really as simple as that.” To make date night, lunch with friends or even a day at the office a little more special, follow Ewen’s tips for adding glam touches to your wardrobe.
Style expert Janette Ewen
Stand out. “Opt for pieces that will set you apart from the crowd, whether it’s a brightly colored article of clothing, a striking pair of shoes or attention-grabbing jewelry,” Ewen says.
Choose an area of focus. If your blouse is boldly colored,
let that be the “star” item, and make the rest of your clothes and accessories the supporting cast. “Picking one area to focus on keeps your look classy, rather than overdone,” adds Ewen.
Shop for transitional pieces. Look for items that can be
worn day to night with the help of the right accessories. Some blouses can be perfectly work-appropriate when topped by a blazer, and then be ready for a night on the town with the addition of jewelry or a different pair of shoes. “I love to pop the collar on a simple white blouse and add long, layered necklaces,” suggests Ewen.
Don’t overdo it. “If you choose to focus on jewelry, feel free
to stack sparkling bracelets against neutral clothing,” says Ewen. Avoid piling on big earrings, statement necklaces, lots of rings and stacks of bracelets all together. The right amount of sparkle will make your look sophisticated; too much is simply too much.

Wear with confidence. No matter how you choose to accessorize or highlight your look, wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Ewen points out that you don’t need to go outside your style in order to make your look more glamorous - simply add a little shine to a look that’s perfectly your own.
No matter the season, what you wear can have an effect on how you feel. So whether you’re planning what to wear for a night on the town or the perfect items to pack for vacation, keep these tips in mind to look and feel your best.

Boudoir Why we must bring back the by Ashley Cole
H
ow delicious does the concept of a boudoir sound? Does it invite images of period films, with elegant royalty sipping tea while having make-up applied? Do visions of colorful flower bouquets, layers of luxurious fabrics and silver trays lined with perfumes enter your mind? Boudoir refers to a woman’s private sitting or dressing room. The word boudoir originates from the French verb, bouder, which means “to pout” or “to sulk.” The idea was to have a quiet place to get away when feeling in a funk, allow to sulk and emerge when in a better mood (how lovely!). Historically, this space was private, invitation only and used for bathing and dressing. Sometimes it was used for activities such as reading, embroidering or entertaining intimate acquaintances (how sexy!). In the modern world, this concept sounds dreamy, but most houses do not allow for the space to delegate to such indulgences. I say it’s time to bring back the boudoir, ladies. With the increasing demands and stress of everyday life, it is vital to take time for yourself to cultivate a peace of mind. Dedicate a private place for pampering, your very own personal retreat. This is a space that becomes an extension of you, a place to make yourself feel beautiful, both inside and out.
Create a Space
It may not seem, at first glance, that there is any extra space in your existing home. However, do a walk through and analyze areas that are rarely used. Chances are there is at least one corner to make your own. It could be a closet (after it’s de-cluttered), an extra bedroom (that is only used for guests a few times a year)
or even one corner of your bedroom. It doesn’t have to be large, but it does need the ability to be closed off from the outside world (children, spouses, etc.).
Lock It Up
framed photos of loved ones and good memories, a vase with fresh flowers and candles. Add pillows, floor cushions and thick area rug. Think spa. Think warm and cozy. This is a place where you leave worries at the door and immerse yourself in what’s important...you.
No joke. The important part of this concept is to have a place where no intrusions will happen. You should be able to let down your guard and truly relax without worrying about someone bursting in asking for something. Put a lock on the door and give yourself permission to sit in here in any state you please. Maybe it’s only for five minutes a day, but allow yourself that five minutes to be completely alone with no interruptions.
Good Light
No Clutter Allowed
Once a space is dedicated to the practice of taking a few precious moments to yourself each day, it will become routine. It’s not just a boudoir, it’s a way of life. The modern concept of a boudoir is truly an extension of you. Make it sensual, beautiful and inviting (how perfect!).
A boudoir is a sanctuary, a retreat from everyday clutter and stress. It needs to be free from piles of stuff. At the basic level, a simple make-up table with a mirror and a comfy chair or floor cushions is all that is needed. Keep all electronics out of the space. This means no television, computer or cell phone. Spending even a little time away from what we are slaves to is refreshing. The one exception to this is a device that plays music. For many, the presence of music or sounds of nature help in the relaxing process. Just be sure to turn off any notifications of calls or text messages if this device is also your phone.
Make It Personal
There is a difference between clutter and carefully placed objects of meaning. Be sure to layer in artwork,
Be sure there is adequate lighting to apply make-up at the table or to read in a comfortable chair. This is where you are able to kick up your feet, sip on a cup of tea and read or sit down and take time preparing for the day. Don’t forget a dimmer switch, though. You’ll want to allow for the ability to set the atmosphere to any number of moods.

Kim Worden
2013 Glass Ceiling Award
3 Easy Steps to Fire Up Your Metabolism by Kimberly Olson
T
he word metabolism is one of the most misunderstood words in the world of food and fitness. Clients tell me they have a slow metabolism, they want to rev up their metabolism or they believe thin people are just lucky and have a fast metabolism. I want to dispel the myths, clear up the confusion and teach you how easy it is to fire up your metabolism in three easy steps. BE SMART IN THE GYM I worked at a health club for years, and I noticed the majority of the ladies would be on the cardio equipment and the guys would be hitting the weights. But how often do we slave away on the treadmill only to experience no real difference in the way that we look? The main reason for this is that we need to be smarter with how we work out. When we do cardio, yes, we’re noticeably sweating up a storm and seeing a high number of calories being burned. However, as soon as our sweat session is over, that elevated state of calorie burn drops instantly. With strength training, you may not feel like you’re getting in a great workout compared to cardio, but the truth is it is even more effective. Whenever we incorporate strength training, our metabolism stays revved up for 24-48 hours! On top of that, for every pound of muscle gained, you can burn 50 more calories at rest without doing anything. Sounds like a win-win to me. MINI MEALS During high school and college, I tried every diet in the book. I’d skip breakfast, have a banana or apple and then wait until early afternoon to eat lunch. Although I was taking in a lot less calories, I still gained weight or completely plateau-ed. Why was this? Although in this day and age food is plentiful, our bodies don’t know that. So as a survival mechanism, whenever our bodies perceive food to be scarce, it is more likely to hang on to or store the food calories it does get. So instead, I recommend that clients eat five to six mini meals per day instead of the traditional three square meals a lot of us grew up with. As soon as you eat breakfast, your metabolism kicks into gear. Continuing to “feed” that fire every two to three hours keeps it humming along all day long. Just make sure you keep an eye on your portion sizes!
Each year, Kalamazoo Network has the honor of recognizing an amazing woman in our community. Due to her outstanding athletic ability, mentorship of countless young women, and success in business, Kalamazoo Network chose Kim Worden for the 2013 Glass Ceiling Award. During her college career at Western Michigan University, where she received her Masters in Physical Education, Kim excelled in both softball and basketball. She was the fourth woman at the college to score over one thousand points in her basketball career. In her four years of softball, she set the record for most hits in a single game, as well as the highest single season winning percentage as a pitcher. After her great success as a player, she ventured into coaching softball at WMU. While there, she built an impressive career, which includes holding the highest number of softball wins in a coaching career (321). Due to her huge success as a student-athlete and coach, she was inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. After her collegiate coaching career, Kim touched many lives through the private coaching business she opened in 2000. Beginning with just several students, Kim built a business around improving the softball community of Southwest Michigan. Her training academy, Worden’s Softball Academy, had tremendous growth each year thanks to her caring attitude, attention to detail, and genuine interest in each student. In March of 2011, she sold the successful academy to promote longevity of quality tutoring for the softball community. She stayed on to instruct more trainers and ensure a flourishing transition until her retirement this April. The academy currently supports a staff of 25 who serve over 225 young female students on a weekly basis. Throughout her career, she has assisted in training more than 800 athletes. In each athlete she tutored, she expected hard work, enthusiasm, respect for the sport, and great leadership. Students relished the time spent with Kim, whether she was giving them an energetic lesson, stopping by their lesson with another trainer, watching their games, or supporting them throughout their lives. When you ask students about Coach Kim, you hear them talk about her great hugs and what an incredible influence she has had on them during challenging years in their lives. She has affected our community in such a positive way by mentoring girls, trainers, and families. She has greatly impacted the importance of softball in our area and instilled in local athletes a constant desire for excellence.

SUPER SUPPLEMENTS I strongly believe that food and fitness are the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle, but I also like the support supplements can give while making that transition. Look for 100% pure from a reputable company (my favorite is Genesis Today) and make sure the only other ingredient listed is the vegetable capsule. Garcinia Cambogia: This is a pumpkin-shaped fruit wild harvested in Indonesia, and the actual compound, HCA (60%), is extracted from the rind. Not only does Garcinia help us metabolize carbs and boost serotonin levels, studies show it can increase fat metabolites by as much as 142%! Raspberry Ketones: Ketones are the component of raspberries responsible for its fragrant aroma. Touted by Dr. Oz as a “Miracle Fat Burner in a Bottle,” Raspberry Ketones have been shown to increase metabolism, inhibit fat formation and break down fat cells. As an added benefit, when taken before exercise, it’s thought to pull stored fatty acids into the bloodstream to increase intensity and endurance. Resveratrol: Although it’s well-known for healthy aging benefits, resveratrol has recently been linked to supporting weight loss. Clinical trials have discovered resveratrol can raise your BMR (how many calories burned at rest) by as much as 29%. On top of that, Purdue University released research that showed resveratrol helps keep baby fat cells dormant. As you can see, it’s super easy to incorporate these three steps into your daily life. Not only will you benefit from increased energy and a trim waist, you’ll be constantly adding fuel to your metabolism fire. IN THEATRES THIS MONTH
May is the official kickoff to the summer blockbuster movie season, and this summer there is a lot to be excited for. All of the big budget effects and splendor are brought to the big screen each summer to pack the theatres, and with many familiar franchises lined up this year will not disappoint. Some have been branding May as the month for “men” at the movies with lots of action, and adventure, but don’t underestimate the love women have for those same features. So, with that in mind, here is some of what May has in store for us on the big screen: May 03 – Iron Man 3 May 10 – The Great Gatsby May 17 – Star Trek Into Darkness May 24 – Epic, Fast and Furious 6, The Hangover Part III
With everything from super heroes to space adventures, or returning to familiar stories with big budgets, there will truly be something for everyone at the theatre this May. Now the bigger question – who are you more looking forward to seeing on the big screen? With all of these big movies, we also have a wide cast of leading men including Robert Downey Jr, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Bradley Cooper, and well . . . Zach Galifianakis ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jeremy Kress is the Director of Marketing & Promotions for Celebration! Cinema. Confessions of an Advertising Goddess…
A Slice of Hollywood Comes to West Michigan Long after everyone has left the movie theatre and that kid is picking up the empty popcorn buckets, I’m still in my seat watching the credits roll. I feel that I owe it to all involved in the movie – whether it’s the director, the key grip, or the hair stylist for Ed Harris. I do it for one reason…I love the movies. The Waterfront Film Festival, formed by a group of creative West Michigan residents, proves that I am not alone in my love. This wonderful festival is the brainchild of Hopwood and Dori DePree, a brother/sister team that has roots firmly planted in West Michigan. They created the film festival so that those of us not blessed to be living near Hollywood can still celebrate the movies. This dynamic duo is also involved with Tic Tock Studios, located in Holland, and enriches our lives with many film projects on the local and national scene. The Waterfront Film Festival showcases full length features, shorts, animations and documentaries. It was born in 1999 with the mission of providing a “middle coast” venue for independent filmmakers eager to showcase their work. It’s supported inpart by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and ranked in the “Top 5 Film Festivals” by SAG Indie in the Screen Actors Guild magazine. After being held in Saugatuck for 14 years, this summer the festival is moving to South Haven and will take place June 13-16. This change in venue is exciting news for South Haven and for those of us who live nearby. The change also benefits the festival in several ways, and in turn, is exciting news for the attendees. “Along with having actual beach venues, we will now have theatres with comfortable seating and air-conditioning,” points out Dori. “In addition to the films, we’ll also be offering different types of entertainment, along with special guests and even an event for kids.” If you haven’t checked out the Waterfront Film Festival yet, it’s time you took in a movie. Or two or three… Movie lovers can also partake in a variety of workshops and seminars designed for aspiring directors, screenwriters, etc. Attendees will also be treated to great music and extras provided by the many shops and restaurants nestled in this wonderful lakeshore community.
Book Review THE WOW FACTOR: Insider Style Secrets for Every Body and Every Budget
By: Jacqui Stafford Gotham Books – Paperback, Original & Ebook, February 5, 2013 - $20.00 In her new book, renowned stylist Jacqui Stafford shares insider tips on looking great without dropping big bucks. As a highly sought-after style expert, Jacqui divulges the inside scoop in her new beauty bible -- most fashion editors and designers are more concerned with how clothes and makeup look on a page rather than on an actual body. THE WOW FACTOR is Jacqui’s solution to this problem. Written in the relatable, refreshing voice of your best girlfriend (who happens to be a professional fashion editor and stylist on TV), Jacqui shares her tips that can transform every woman, and is available for interviews to discuss: • How to figure out your body shape—and what styles suit you best • Tips to maximize what you already own • Which trends to ignore and which to embrace • The secrets to looking wealthy—even when you’re not • When to shop – the seasons, months, and hours to get the best deals • How to turn runway looks into realistic ensembles • And much more! THE WOW FACTOR goes beyond shopping advice to give readers body confidence and the know-how to look the very best they can possibly be. Celebrity status is about to get a lot more affordable, as Jacqui shares her “wealth” of style knowledge, culled from her years of experience working across the world in the fashion industry.
Beach House No. 9 By Christie Ridgeway Because West Michigan has the benefit of four seasons and a lakeshore that rivals any coast, the surroundings are ideal for film-making. Just a few years ago, South Beach Park in South Haven was transformed into a boardwalk setting complete with carnival rides and food venders for the movie Virginia, starring Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly and produced by Tic-Toc Studios. The film featured many West Michigan extras and was shown at last year’s festival. If past years are any indication, you just might run into a star or two at this year’s festival. Past attendees include Daryl Hannah, Jason Ritter, Wendie Malick, and Yeardley Smith, to name just a few. Stars, movies and beaches…Hollywood magic brought to us by the Waterfront Film Festival…in little ol’ South Haven. Come on…check it out! It’s exciting that this is the first book in a series! Do you love it too when you get a glimpse of the next story in your current one? Ridegeway has a rare talent to match steamy with endearing and switch between plausible perspectives of men and women. Her characters excite and entice, her humor is dead on and she never loses sight of the focus of a truly fantastic romance: the kindling of an irrepressible and entirely unique connection between two people who never thought it could happen to them. Prepare to stay up too late reading because you won’t be able to put Beach House No. 9 down! Review by Charity McMaster
