Navigating the Change of

Menopause “The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting women’s health and quality of life through an understanding of menopause and healthy aging. A number of years ago, NAMS recognized a need to set essential standards for health providers, thereby assuring high-quality care for women at menopause and beyond. To meet this need, they developed a competency examination. All licensed healthcare providers are eligible to sit for this examination. Those who pass have demonstrated expertise in the field of menopause medicine and are awarded the credential of NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner (NCMP).” Dr. Rebekah Sharp pursued this certification because she was interested in the care of women throughout their lifespan. To her, women’s health is about much more than reproduction. She enjoys helping women manage their menopause symptoms in the process of providing the best preventive care. She says “There is a lot of conflicting information, which makes the menopause transition a confusing and challenging time for many. It is important to me that patients have access to the most accurate and up to date information to make choices about their health. A provider with the NCMP certification has shown a commitment to maintaining and expanding this body of knowledge in their professional practice.” Dr. Sharp is the only NCMP certified provider practicing in the Kalamazoo area at the present time. The website for NAMS offers more information and is an excellent resource for women who want more information. www. menopause.org/for-women

FROMTHEPUBLISHER To go out with the setting sun on an empty beach is to truly embrace your solitude.

O

ur focus for July is all about Relaxing and Refreshing! What a great idea and summer in Michigan is the perfect place to do that. Lying on a sandy beach with the breeze gently blowing as the waves continue their rythm-matic sound – just thinking about it relaxes me.

Of course, there are a lot of ways to renew your spirit and relax your mind even if you are not on a beach. And we can begin by taking better care of ourselves. Try a simple but effective detox from sugar (10-Step Sugar Detox) or plan a family time of “Get Up & Go.” Remember relaxed, happy kids and spouse go a long way toward keeping you relaxed. Exercising together, as a family, can be the first step to a happy home life. Other ideas for nurturing your health and state of mind can be found in the great out-of-doors such as gardening, harvesting nature’s bounty and then preparing them into great dishes you are sure to enjoy. My preference is to grow plants and flowers

that will return again next year and provide me with beautiful flowers to enjoy both indoors and out. I hope you are having a summer filled with amazing adventures and activities. Don’t wait – our Michigan summers go fast. So far I’m holding fast to my goal of at least two fun-filled quests per month. Next up is my Bucket List Adventure to… no wait…I’ll tell you in August! In the meanwhile, Happy Fourth of July to our great country and to all of us who strive every day to keep it an amazing place to live. To those who serve or have served our country – THANK YOU for our FREEDOM. We don’t say it often enough…but we are totally in your debt and deeply appreciate each of you and all that you do. Here’s to July and to YOU!

“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” ~ Erma Bombeck

This journey has given my personal style a ch ance to be unburied from years of neglect, lack of interest , and the well-meaning suggest ions of others. 5-23 My goal with m ake-up was to still look like myself, and after my past experiences, I assu med that meant wearing little to no make-up. After stumbling throu gh my reasons behind the lack of make-up usage and kn owledge, Kelly knew exa ctly what I was talking about an d assured me that she knew how to keep me looking like m e. Yay! For a garden filled with fluttering friends, consider planting bright, attention-grabbing blooms. The July landscape should be a playground for butterflies and hummingbirds, and it all starts by selecting the right plants to accent the yard, deck and patio. Remember, sunny spaces and water help attract these winged performers to put on a show. Often the next question is, “Rick, what are your favorites to do the job in the month of July?” I’m glad you asked! Many different plants will attract beauty, but I especially like these in the month of July:

Heliopsis Honeysuckle Hydrangea Joe Pye Weed Lantana Landscape Roses

Lychnis Monarda (Bee Balm) Nepeta Petunias Russian Sage Salvia

Sedum Tithonia Mexican Sunflower Tickseed (Coreopsis) Zinnias

onica Ferrucci, whose father was in the Air Force and the CIA, had not always been comfortable around guns. She actually had to conquer her fear of them for the sake of her oldest son, Joe. He wanted to learn how to properly handle firearms and Monica was never one “to drop him off at the local range without knowing what the program was about”. She attended some training and eventually found herself volunteering, running a marksmanship program and accompanying women to buy their own guns. Monica is a woman who believes in making informed decisions and lives her life trying to empower women to do just that. She knows that owning a gun is not for every woman, but she wants to be sure that women have all the information they need to make an informed decision. After accompanying several different women shopping for their first firearm at various stores in the area, Monica recognized a need for more women on staff to help women (the largest growing demographic of gun owners) with their purchases. Monica called Randy VanDam, owner of D&R Sports Center, to suggest that he hire a woman for just that purpose. Recognizing a great idea when he saw it, he hired Monica and the rest is history.

Monica Ferrucci

In her position as Manager and Buyer at D&R, Monica loves helping people figure out what works for them. She believes in informing women of the facts of firearms and safety, enabling them to make educated decisions (not based on fear) and encouraging them to refuse to be a victim. She says “It is about educating people with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to avoid possible life-threatening encounters. Whether or not they choose to incorporate a firearm is their decision. I hope that they learn to be more aware of their environment and make safe choices to keep them from becoming victims. I encounter many wives or mothers that don’t feel safe around their husband’s firearms. Merely learning how to load and unload the firearm and understanding how the firearm functions eases their mind.”

Nonla Vietnamese Street Food

Nonla is an unexpected, delightful find in the heart of downtown Mattawan. A funky, casual setting is not the only thing that greets you when you walk in the door. A smile from Executive Chef Johnny Nguyen and a whiff of delectable Vietnamese street food (with a French twist) are yours as well. The presence of this exotic and welcoming little place in the heart of a small town like Mattawan is a perfect example of why Southwest Michigan is such a great place to live.

Nonla is owned and run by Chef Johnny and he wants you to feel like one of the family. His goal is to have you love the food so much and feel so welcome that you will return and soon be on a first name basis with him. With dishes like Free-Range Chicken Pho, his addictive Sweet Potato Ginger Fries and a selection of Banh Mi sandwiches, there is plenty on the menu to tempt your taste buds. Chef Johnny tries to source quality ingredients, using sustainable, organic, and local products whenever possible. Chef Johnny came to West Michigan with his wife Kelly in April of 2015, just in time for their daughter, Olive, to be born. They came from California, where Johnny attended OCC Culinary School and served at Five Feet Restaurant for three years in a variety of roles. He was part of the opening team at the Montage Resort and Spa in Laguna Beach and was the Sous Chef for the Loft Restaurant. He worked under Chef Gregory Short for two years before moving with him to San Francisco to work at MASAS as his Sous Chef. Chef Johnny then worked for First Crush Restaurant

Group as Executive Chef for eight years before making his cross-country move to Mattawan. Life is busy for Chef Johnny, with a beautiful wife, two eighty pound dogs, and daughters Olive and newborn Bea at home but he wouldn’t have it any other way. He is thrilled to come to Nonla every day and put his enthusiasm and attention to detail to work in an effort to bring the people of Mattawan and Southwest Michigan a taste of the food he loves. Chef Johnny has generously shared his recipe for Chicken Banh Mi to try at home. Enjoy!

wearing

WHITE

7 Tips to Wearing White When wearing light weight fabrics like linen, wear underwear that matches your flesh tone.

Does the potential for the see-through factor makes you cringe? Wear items with a built in liner or heavier fabrics such as denim. For a monochromatic look, choose neutral, metallic or nude accessories. To add personality, wear statement pieces for a pop of color. Mix and match textures, but ensure the shades of white match. There are many tones like winter white, eggshell, frost and linen, and they don’t always look well together. Be aware that white can accentuate certain body parts. That being said, white shoes may make your feet look bigger than they are. Wearing white to a wedding will give the impression that you’re trying to upstage the bride. Don’t do it.

Look cool, calm and collected when temperatures soar.

Afraid of wearing white when going out?

Keep an emergency kit handy with baby wipes, a stainremover stick and even a piece of white chalk or baby powder, which can cover up small gray or black marks on white clothing. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

The good news about wearing white

White is a great color to wear when you are preparing for new beginnings. It encourages sensibility, attention to details and optimisim. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

TIP:

Clean and disinfect white items using the hydrogen peroxide in your medicine cabinet. Remove stains, such as fresh blood, by pouring the solution directly on the stain, then rinse with cold water before washing. NOTE: Never mix hydrogen peroxide with chlorine bleach, ammonia or vinegar as dangerous gases can form.

FRESH IDEAS FROM THE

Garden BY LEANNAH SEESE

I

n July, the weather is perfect for going to the beach, camping, barbecues and picnics. It’s the time of year that the garden produces a savory crop, making it an excellent resource to prepare for an adventure or gathering. Gardening helps to cut grocery bills and promotes healthy eating when it’s as simple as walking outside to gather snacks and meals. Below are basic tips for utilizing everything in the garden: greens, veggies, fruits and herbs!

Happy Herbs

Herbs are easy to grow and will harvest throughout the entire season. Mint is a great addition to fruit waters and pairs well watermelon. There are many types of mint that offers slight differences in fragrance and taste. For savory herb ideas, remember to flavor chicken or potatoes with rosemary; add cilantro to guacamole and tacos; add dill to a chicken or egg salad; and toss parsley and basil in Italian dishes for authentic flavor. Additionally, toss your favorite herb with vinegar and oil for the ultimate salad dressing. Experiment with different herb combinations for both sweet and savory appetizers, dinners or sauces. The possibilities are endless!

Versatile Veggies

Green Scheming

By July, more options in the garden are ready for picking. Get creative by sautéing asparagus for a warm salad, or thinly slice radishes for a nice crunchy addition. Carrots and other root vegetables are easy to enjoy in a variety of ways including boiling, sautéing or grilling for a side dish, main course or within a gravy or salad dressing.

Leafy greens are one of the first things that are ready to be harvested. Kale, spinach, arugula, Swiss chard, and many different kinds of lettuce are just a few options that are easy to grow and make a delicious base for any salad. They can be used alone or mixed all together. The younger these plants, the tenderer they will be. With some greens, like kale, harvesting earlier makes them less bitter. If harvesting the fruit or vegetable isn’t the priority, the young greens of plants like beets and broccoli can be used in salads. Kale and chard are great greens that last through cooler nights. Add these greens in soups, eggs, burgers and smoothies, or bake kale with oil and salt for a crispy snack.

During the summer, grilling is in full force, and in addition to leafy greens, garden vegetables are grillable. With a drizzle of oil, salt and pepper, and fresh herbs, veggies are ready for skewering, grilling in tin foil, in a grill basket or directly on the grill if the slices are large enough to not fall through the grate. Steaming and sautéing are great options for preparing vegetables, too. Try adding sautéed veggies and greens into a dish of morning eggs for a boost of nutrients.

Eating leafy greens provides vitamins A, C and K, calcium and potassium. They are all low in calories, and the spinach and chard offer folate. When it comes to lettuce, the darker the leaf, the more nutritious. Avoid iceberg lettuce for recipes, and instead, use dark, delicious greens for more flavor. Pesto is an easy and delicious way to eat greens. Use on toast, a base on pizza, crackers, or added to sandwiches. Take pesto to the next picnic as a chip or cracker dip. Snag veggies from the garden to dip in the pesto. To make pesto, put a handful of greens (if the leaves are older, the vein may need to get cut off if it is too thick and rigid) in a food processor with oil; depending on taste preferences, add garlic, pine nuts and or a small amount of lemon juice. Salt and pepper to taste!

Feeling Fruity

Strawberries, raspberries and other berries can be thrown in with the greens for a sweeter salad. Berries pair well with feta or goat cheese. Berries are a great source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Jazz up oatmeal, cereal, and pancakes, or can simply enjoy berries by themselves. Drop them into tea or soda water to make a sparkling summer spritzer.

amilies often look for fun things to do together, and few things are more fun than physical activity. Choosing activities that combine fun with physical activity is a great way to bond as a family and get healthy at the same time. According to Let’s Move!, an initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to fight the problem of childhood obesity, children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. Parents know it can sometimes be hard to get kids to disconnect from their devices long enough to get out and play. Let’s Move! notes that kids who are supported by their families or surrounded by others interested in physical activity are more likely to participate in such activities themselves. Families looking to get fit and grow closer can consider the following approaches to live healthier, more active lifestyles.

Give gifts that encourage activity.

Both youngsters and adults are enamored with the latest gadgets, but tablets and video game consoles

won’t do much to make families more physically active. In lieu of toys that promote sedentary lifestyles, give kids toys that encourage physical activity. Erect a basketball hoop in the driveway or go buy new bicycles for the whole family, resolving to go for a nightly ride together.

Restrict TV time.

Establish house rules regarding how many hours of television kids and adults can watch each day. Kids will follow their parents’ lead with regard to how much television they watch, so parents should be mindful of their own viewing habits, resisting the temptation to plop down on the couch for several hours each night. Don’t turn on the television at night until the whole family has engaged in some physical activity.

Walk or ride bikes to run errands.

When running errands in town, take the kids along and walk or ride bicycles rather than drive. This is a great time for families to catch up, and walking or riding a bicycle is great exercise.

Schedule physical activities for the weekends.

When planning weekends, parents can schedule a physical activity for the whole family. Make time to go hiking at a nearby park or schedule a family basketball game in the driveway. Such activities are healthy, and are free, too.

Volunteer as a family.

Another way to get up and go as a family is to work with a local nonprofit or charitable organization. Sign the family up for monthly park or beach cleanup projects that get the family out of the house and moving, or sign the family up to work at a local soup kitchen where kids can learn the value of helping others while staying on their feet.

Let kids plan activities.

One great way to get kids excited about an active lifestyle is to let them plan family activities. Kids who are encouraged to make suggestions, whether it’s visiting the zoo or going kayaking as a family, are more likely to embrace the experience.

Exercise is really important to me - it’s therapeutic. So if I’m ever feeling tense or stressed or like I’m about to have a meltdown, I’ll put on my iPod and head to the gym or out on a bike ride along Lake Michigan with the girls.” – First Lady Michelle Obama 20

Off-Court Action

F YOU’RE LOOKING FOR TOP-NOTCH TENNIS in Kalamazoo this summer, you don’t have to stick to the Kalamazoo College courts.

“The Radisson is our headquarters hotel,” said Greg Ayers, president and CEO of tourism boosters Discover Kalamazoo. “The majority of the players stay there for the week.” The United States Tennis Association Boys’ 18 and 16 Tournament is held in Kalamazoo August 8 to 14 this year. The majority of the tennis matches played by high school-age competitors will be at Stowe Tennis Stadium at Kalamazoo College, though some will play at courts at Western Michigan University. Volunteers prepare the matches and get the sites ready for players a week before they arrive, but the players themselves are in town for seven days or more. That’s seven days when they have to eat, sleep and prepare for their next duel on the court. The tournament first came to Kalamazoo in 1943, and Kalamazoo College built Stowe Stadium in 1946 to keep the contest in southwest Michigan. It’s been there ever since. The college, the city of Kalamazoo, and the USTA work together year after year to keep the tournament in Kalamazoo as it continues to grow; about 200 players are scheduled in each round this year, and more are anticipated for the 2017 tournament. The contests bring players from around the country to compete, and it’s also a place for college coaches to scout out new recruits. This year, coaches from

about 65 universities are expected to attend. The tournament’s participation is nationwide — according to the USTA website, of the approximately 400 players who participated in 2015, only nine were from Michigan, with only two who could go back to their own homes each night: one from Kalamazoo and one from Portage. With hundreds of players, coaches, parents, volunteers and officials involved, finding a place for athletes to stay is a must. Ayers said Discover Kalamazoo collects room rates for local hotels and passes them on to the USTA, which helps coordinate the living arrangements for the week players are in town. Most do stay at the Radisson, and the tournament provides a shuttle service from the hotel to the courts at Kalamazoo College and WMU. One night is a party for players at the Radisson, and another evening is a neighborhood picnic hosted by the West Main Neighborhood Association. But the rest of the week is open for the players and their families to explore Kalamazoo — though most of the time they’re hanging around the tennis court, even if they aren’t playing themselves. Because the players stay near the courts all week, there’s no special effort to promote the city’s attractions to the USTA competitors or their families. Instead, the USTA tournament is a way to promote Kalamazoo as a great community, Ayers said. “Our volunteers create an amazing experience for the players,” he said. “People across the country know about the USTA in Kalamazoo, we take great pride in that.”

The tournament has even made its way into the movies. “Unstrung,” a 2007 documentary, followed several teen tennis players as they prepared for their final competition, the tournament in Kalamazoo. The film is available online, and its trailer is on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBVwELy_V9w). It features well-known tennis stars like Andre Agassi and John McEnroe — and, of course, Kalamazoo College. While “Unstrung” kept the camera on a handful of players in the mid-2000s, a new set of young players comes to Kalamazoo each summer. And there’s always an audience for the tournament. Most attendees are local, just coming to watch a few matches during the week, though more than 1,000 volunteers are part of the tournament, both on and off the court. Each year, a “junior clinic” is held for pre-teen tennis enthusiasts at Kalamazoo College. The USTA Boys’ 18 and 16 Tournament has been held in Kalamazoo for more than 70 years. Fans of the game have been excited about it since the inaugural competition. But Ayers says even people just curious about what makes Kalamazoo so active just before students head back to school can enjoy You can see more of Andrew what they see. “Even if Domino’s tennis isn’t your sport, writing at www. it’s good to support the dominowriting. com community,” he said.

Liberated,

| SINGLEHOOD |

Not Lonely BY MEGAN STUBBS

I

’m single. That simple phase can be said with all of the confidence in the world or with shame like someone who feels like they’re wearing a gigantic scarlet “S” on their forehead.

Whether you are newly single or have been living the life for a while, there can be strong emotions when it comes to this relationship status. As with anything, you will have good days and bad days, but singlehood should not be treated like a prison sentence. Take time to reflect on your situation and realize that you have so much, if not more, opportunity and freedom than your paired or married friends. Read on to find out aspects of the life you may be overlooking and see what you can incorporate into your life.

Own It

Yes, you are alone in the sense that you are not romantically involved with anyone, but that doesn’t mean its time to wallow in self pity and binge eat Haagen-Dazs. Being single is as much of a choice as being in a relationship or married. So the next time a family member says, ‘when are you going to get married?’ Tell them that you’re busy living your life to the fullest. The single and confidant woman isn’t looking to settle with just anyone, she has high standards. Your life as a single person is perfect for embarking on a new journey or opportunity. Think of the freedom you have without having to consider someone else’s schedule. Adventure could be around the next corner.

Be The Best You

Single and confidant women take care of themselves. I don’t necessarily mean they live in the gym and buy kale by the carton, but rather they do what is best for them mentally and physically. They treat their body and spirit well and they do it for themselves, not someone else. And speaking of the body, do not get hung up on silly numbers on a scale or a tag. Those are not indicators of

24

July 2016

your worth in the world nor should they be contingent on your happiness. IF you feel like you would like to make a physical change, you must also agree to love yourself at the beginning of your journey and not just at the end. It is with that body that you are making a transformation, so be grateful with the place your are at and for the place you are going. Moreover, if you are kind to yourself, your body will show you what it wants to look like when its happy and healthy.

“Being single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with.” - Sex and the City

Make Personal Goals

This is such an overlooked aspect of being single. The world is literally at your fingertips and you can do just about anything. Make some goals! Plan a vacation. Learn how to cook a foreign cuisine. Read! Schedule out time for meditation. Sign up to volunteer somewhere. Actually hang your laundry in the closet instead of searching through the three baskets on the floor. I will

only say positive things about my body for one week. These activities and more are great things to work towards. You can make these goals as big or as small as you’d like, there are really no limitations. You are able to better yourself and continue growing by crushing goals.

Say Yes

You are a party of one so saying yes to invitations should be fairly easy. You don’t need to coordinate with your partners schedule or see if the babysitter is free. Even if something sounds weird or is outside of your normal, try it. By keeping your life open to opportunity, you are increasing your chance for adventure and networking. Single and confident women are out there! They are pursuing passions and smashing fears. The confident single woman is already living and building the life she wants. She isn’t seeking to fill holes, no pun intended. You don’t need someone else to complete you, you are already a whole person. Adding a healthy relationship an already fulfilled life should be the metaphorical cherry on top. Of course there will be days when hearing your friend say the word ‘husband’ will cause your eye to twitch and tears threaten to fall, but just remember all of the possibility and opportunity you are poised for. Whether singlehood is a temporary or permanent status, revel in the amount of freedom you have. Create the life you want, surround yourself with things and people that bring you love and joy, and be grateful at this time and place. Sugar Detox The 10-Step Plan

For adults who crave candy and ice cream almost as much as their children, the bad news on sugar continues to pour in. Earlier this year, research into sugar’s deleterious effects showed a connection to cancer, heart disease and diabetes. More recently, the American Dental Association reminded parents just how bad sugar is for their children’s teeth. “We think we’re so advanced in 2016, yet when it comes to health and a nutritious diet, many of us have a long way to go,” nutritionist and juicing pioneer Cherie Calbom, who is known as “The Juice Lady,” said. The good news for parents is they can ferret out the sugar-laden products that may be hidden in their and their children’s diets, and dedicate themselves to a healthy, sugar-free lifestyle, Calbom said. Below is Calbom’s solution: a 10-step detox plan that parents can work on with their children to eliminate sugar in both their diets.

Cherie Calbom, MSN, holds a Master of Science degree in whole foods nutrition from Bastyr University. Known as The Juice Lady (www. juiceladycherie. com), she is author of 31 books, with millions of copies sold worldwide.

Avoid all sugar. If you can do it for 30 days, you can change your lifestyle. During this time, avoid even healthy sweeteners like honey and substitutes, which overwhelm the taste buds.

Eat your veggies. Non-starchy vegetables provide your body with muchneeded vitamins that also will cut your urge for unhealthy, sugary snacks.

Cut caffeine intake. There are multiple benefits to cutting back on your caffeine, including the temptation to use sugary creamers and accompanying sweets along with actually causing sugar cravings.

Drink eight glasses of water a day. Sufficient pure water keeps you hydrated, reduces headaches and constipation, and flushes out toxins.

Skip foods that turn to sugar easily. This includes wheat and other grains, alcohol and starchy foods like white potatoes.

Supplement your diet. GTF chromium, L-Glutamine, B vitamins, Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin C assist your body in various ways to overcome sugar cravings.

Enjoy healthy smoothies. Healthy smoothies that include dark leafy greens like kale or chard make you feel good in the long term and can help eliminate the urge for sugary snacks and excessive caffeine.

Sleep well; sleep enough. Lack of sleep messes with your hormonal balance and contributes to feelings of hunger.

Power up with protein. Eggs, nuts, fish and other meats balance blood sugar and insulin.

Fight sugar cravings with fat. Healthy fats like avocados and fish make you feel full and satisfied.

Beware of sugar in places you might not have expected, like tomato sauces, salad dressing and marinades. Make a habit of studying labels.” 26

Adding Up the Benefits per Impression

Specializing in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women

Have you ever wondered what it actually costs to make an impression on someone? One metric used in marketing—the “cost per impression”—helps decision makers get more out of their advertising. In a recent study, the average cost per impression of printed and promotional items came to $0.002. In comparison, the cost per impression for online advertising tends to be 25% more. Products like printed pens, shirts, and hats make impressions that add up. The Direct Marketing Association found in 2010 that one dollar spent on print advertising generated over 12 dollars in sales. Those tangible, printed impressions add up to a great return on investment and build real growth for business. The next time you have to make a decision about your advertising, think about the value that comes from the impressions you make. For value that generates results, it’s time to rethink the role of printed promotional materials in your advertising.

It was like finding a mix tape from 25 years ago.

A half-dozen classic hip hop and R&B acts from the early 1990s came to Wings Stadium for the first “I Love The 90s” show of the year in west Michigan May 26. Technical issues slowed the early part of the concert, but soon Young MC was on stage, finishing his brief set with his big hit, “Bust A Move,” stretching it out with a call-and-response bridge in the song. Another “fun time” rapper, Tone Loc, went one better and brought about two dozen women on stage to dance during “Funky Cold Medina,” which closed out his part of the show. He didn’t forget his other hit single, though; “Wild Thing” stirred the crowd up after a pause of about 15 minutes as crew moved around in the back of the stage. A hype man got the audience back on track as Tone Loc strolled out to about a hundred or more people in the pit area just in front of the stage. As Tone Loc said his goodbyes, the show kept rolling. Lyrically, the show took a more serious turn with the next artist, Coolio. The rapper, known for his wild braids (and his hit songs, too) still had them — or at least two, sticking out of the top of his baseball cap like pigtails. His medley of songs, like his own “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Fantastic Voyage” was a preview of the second half of the concert. Coolio ended his performance with the song everyone had been waiting to hear from him, the No. 1 hit from 1995, “Gangsta’s Paradise.” Unlike the music video, Coolio’s time on stage didn’t include a cameo from Michelle Pfeiffer. Instead, the lights went down and the crowd joined in, singing along in unison to the chorus. The second half of the “I Love The 90s” show brought groups to the stage, starting with Color Me Badd. The current group, a quartet at the time of their blockbuster 1991 album C.M.B., is now a trio, but their vocals remained tight as they performed their chart-topping hits back-to-back: “I Adore Mi Amor,” “All 4 Love,” and “I Wanna Sex You Up.” Tone Loc’s music videos had played behind his live performance earlier in the show, but it was during Color Me Badd’s time on stage when audiences could see what was in style in 1991, at least for young, new jack swing pop bands on MTV.

The 90s” concert: All-4-One. Even 20 years later, the group still features the same four singers that made “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That” hits in 1995. They moved around the stage easily, featuring a little of the synchronized dancing familiar to pop and R&B fans. All-4-One touched on other big songs from their repertoire, like their cover of the 1963 song “So Much In Love” and “Someday.” Then All-4-One made up for what was missing: artists of the time period who weren’t part of the concert. They led off with a few verses of “Motownphilly” by Boyz II Men and “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan, among other songs. Finally came the big stars of the night: Salt-N-Pepa, alongside backup dancers and their DJ, Spinderella. They combined pieces of all the other performers and added their own twist: their music videos from the late 1980s and early 1990s, and a tribute to other artists of that era (a backup dancer imitated Michael Jackson’s moonwalk as Spinderella played “Beat It,” and followed it up with samples from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns n’ Roses). They mentioned a 30-year friendship and career as SaltN-Pepa, and turned to the audience to see who was born in which decade (judging by the screams, most of the crowd were “80s babies,” though there were plenty from the 70s and 90s, and even a few born in the 1960s). Like everyone in the “I Love The 90s” show, Salt-N-Pepa were there to sing the hits, and they did, from “Let’s Talk About Sex” to “Whatta Man” (which brought a handful of guys on stage to dance) to “Shoop” and “Push It.” There was no doubt that the audience was there to reminisce — whether they had heard the songs when they were new, or were just fans of classic hip hop — and a variety of experienced performers didn’t fail to deliver exactly what they were looking for. The Charm Bracelet by Viola Shipman

Having lost touch with each other over time, grandmother Lolly, daughter Arden and granddaughter Lauren seek to reconnect before it’s too late. While each of these dynamic women struggles with their own unique trials, together they begin to find hope, love and peace; and their journey starts with a charm bracelet conveying generations of family stories and advice. This sweeping, characterdriven tale is amusing, bittersweet and heartwarming. The setting and season also factor largely in this book. Michiganders will relish the accurate, often times humorous, descriptions of the regionally-inspired locales and summertime events.

The Color of Water in July by Nora Carroll

Busy, know-it-all, New Yorker Jess just found out she inherited the family lake cottage. Though, rather than being overjoyed, she can’t wait to sell it and forget about a painful past and long-buried family secrets. However, while rummaging through remnants of bygone eras, she starts to construct an alternate family history, and begins questioning the accuracy of what she knows. What she unearths could change her life forever. The restful location and relaxed pace of this book, contrast nicely with an ominous and mysterious undercurrent.

Movies July IN

BY DAVID POSTMA

J

uly represents a turning point in the year and delivers introspection and hopefulness. It should come as no surprise the newly released movies this month include the same. Liven up your July with a reboot of a beloved comedy, an adaptation of one of the biggest literary properties of all time, and much more!

Pick of the Month The BFG

July 1 Steven Spielberg adapts Roald Dahl’s cherished children’s book, The BFG. The movie follows a young girl who meets the BFG, a big friendly giant, who takes her on an imaginative journey to a new world where she meets other giants who have less than reputable plans for her. As an adventurous family fantasy film, this movie will be interesting to audiences of all ages.

Ghostbusters July 8

Ghostbusters reunites the superstar team of Director Paul Feig and Melissa Mccarthy, along with Kristen Wiig and Chris Hemsworth as a female imagined reboot of the original Ghostbusters. The story remains a group of scientists who discover a way to defeat ghosts and those aligned against them. The movie boasts star power, and should serve as an interesting test to see how well crowds react to creative adaptations like this.
