Editor's Letter

I

t’s back to school time. It will be my daughter’s last first day of school. I’m a list maker – once again this year I wrote out the lists of everything we need to get done before school starts even though we have done this twelve times. As overwhelming and stressful this time of year can be, I enjoyed it, because in the big picture, this crazy schedule doesn’t last very long. This was our last year of back to school clothes shopping, baking ‘first day of school’ cookies, making sure all the school supplies are in their place and are packed in the backpack days in advance, boxing up too small clothes for donation and setting out the outfits for the first week. Although these acts were ways to celebrate the new year, I was also teaching my daughter how to get organized and ensuring a smooth transition back to school that I hope she continues once she is on her own.

While reviewing this year’s She Means Business profiles, I was impressed with the depth and width of the knowledge, experience and interests of our local business women. I wonder if they contribute any of their success to the lessons they didn’t realize they learned from their moms! The profiles we feature each September are definitely one of my favorite magazine highlights. Please take some time to read the features, learn about and, most importantly, support these women. In this edition, you will find some useful recipes for this busy time such as quick and healthy meal ideas to avoid the drive through. Don’t overlook the advice on how to help boost productivity and time management. There are tips to show you new ways to wear your favorite black blazer and update your make up… which reminds me – I need to add waterproof mascara to the last first day of school list. Until next month,

Jennie

Things to Do in

September by Peaches McCahill

F

alling forward means taking action with a plan for what’s ahead. Preparing for the future can avoid a possible disaster as well as remove stress and anxiety for ourselves and our loved ones.

1

Invest in the future. Open a savings account that cannot be touched.

2

Create a personal budget. Know how much money you need to live your lifestyle. Always ask yourself, “Do I need this, or do I want this?”

4

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Nelson Mandela

3

Look over your insurance policies. Often your premiums raise annually without you realizing it – same thing with your car and life insurance.

5

Finish the task, and finish it strong!

Review home safety. Discuss emergency procedures with your family. Make sure you have the necessary items in your home such as a fire extinguisher, ladder, escape route plan, etc.

6

Avoid negative time leaches such as talking about others, criticizing, or gossiping.

8

7

Continually organize. Don’t wait for an overwhelming mess. Organize a little each day.

Brainstorm new ideas. I carry an idea book in my car and keep one next to my bed. Give time to others. It’s the ultimate way to increase personal selfworth.

9

10 Take care of yourself. Optimal health = optimal production.

Ways to

Get Ahead by Doing Less by Victoria Upton

Is the pressure to add more to your already full plate zapping the joy out of your career and business life? Let’s leave the so-called virtues of multi-tasking behind and consider how doing less can help us get ahead at work.

Keep It Short and Sweet

Make sure the subject line of your e-mail is clear and to the point. Long-winded emails take a lot of time to write. Your efforts are wasted if the recipient doesn’t want to take the time to pour over your wordy narrative. If you have a lot to say, maybe a phone call or an appointment is the best way to go. That e-mail can simply be a request for the best time to call or stop in.

Curb Unsolicited Emails

You can opt-out of telemarketing calls through www.donotcall.gov, but did you know you can also opt out of unsolicited, commercial emails? Registration is free through the Direct Marketing Association and is good for six years. Visit www.dmachoice.org for details.

Destroy Distractions

Do you need to check Facebook every half hour? Are you being interrupted by notifications that aren’t necessary? Silent your cell phone, log out of IM, and focus. Do the essentials first. Can’t cut it off completely? Try limiting the time you spend attending to social media to 10 minutes, and then get back to productive work for an hour at a time.

6

September 2015

Straighten Up

Remove everything from your bulletin board and set it aside. Now think about why you have a bulletin board. Is it for inspirational quotes? Do you post your to-do list there? Is it to quickly access phone numbers or your wireless login code (that you can never seem to remember)? Happy memories? Make a label for each topic and then replace the items you want to keep. Be sure to throw away anything that’s useless and outdated. If you want to keep certain notes, business cards or photos but don’t need them at a moments glance, find another place for them.

Get Rid of the Piles

If you find yourself spending time thumbing through paperwork on your desk, consider converting your paper documents to digital files. You’ll be able to organize, search, archive and review, as well as distribute from the convenience of your computer. If you convert to Adobe Acrobat PDFs, you can also use tools to touch up text, images and create interactive forms. Learn more at www.adobe.com.

Make Meetings Matter

Is a two-hour meeting necessary? Establish a goal for each meeting and only meet for the amount of time need to accomplish it. If you think 20 minutes is plenty of time, then go for it. Keep it simple. Take notes. Wrap up your meeting with a list of actions to be accomplished. Begin your next meeting by reviewing the progress.

Outsource

Your mundane task could be someone else’s bread and butter. Instead of trudging along on work you dislike, ask someone else to do it. An activity you abhor doing could be a co-worker’s idea of a good time. Need to justify spending money on outsourcing? Consider the extra time you’ll have for improving your business or enjoying valuable time with your loved ones.

Express Gratitude

Treasure your relationships with a thank you note. Mail a real card. It will take you less than five minutes. Keep it brief and sincere. Stop letting those good intentions pile up. Quiet that nagging voice in your head, feel good and move forward with kindness.

WITH STYLISH ACCESSORIES Add individuality by accessorizing your outfit. By starting with neutral colors, your unique twist can be left up to your outfit additions. Here, we made the chunky necklace the main statement piece and complemented it with a wristwatch and neutralcolored purse.

PAIRED WITH A PENCIL SKIRT This pair is perfect because a body-shaping skirt doesn’t distract attention from the statement blazer. A detailed skirt or one that poofs in any way may disrupt the sleek flow of an outfit. Stick with something that accentuates your curves but still makes you feel comfortable. THE WORKING MODERN WOMAN WEARS MANY HATS.

She transitions from work to family time to social life and back again on a daily basis. These roles are all important parts of her identity. She needs to go effortlessly from a day full of meetings to a dinner date without compromising her sense of style. Below are tips to transition three focal areas: wardrobe, hair, and makeup.

S t y l e

The key is to choose clothing with versatility. A modern woman doesn’t have much time to change between the office and a night out. Plan ahead by wearing something that will work just as well at a trendy bar as it will a daytime lunch meeting. In this instance, dresses are a girl’s best friend. Pair a dress with a cardigan and flats during the day. For a children’s event, keep the cardigan and swap out flats for a pair of trendy casual shoes. This makes the look go from work to casual without losing style. For the evening, add platform heels and remove the cardigan. Wearing accessories packed ahead of time will add an extra pop to any nighttime outfit. A bold colored necklace or bright statement earrings will dress up a work outfit and will prepare for a night out on the town.

look, first put hair into a high ponytail. From there, separate the pony into two sections and wrap the pieces in opposite directions around the hair tie and seal with bobby pins. Slick down any stray hairs, hairspray in place and the hair is ready for daytime meetings or a nighttime event. For a softer look, choose a low, loose bun that can work with wet or dry hair. Wrap hair loosely around a hair tie and secure with pins for a polished look. After work, let down the bun for soft, flowing waves.

Changing or re-applying makeup is another way to transition from day to night. Traditional daytime makeup is very muted and natural while nighttime makeup is all about expression. To go from natural to fun, play up either the eyes or lips. If dramatizing the eyes, use a soft black eyeliner pencil to line the top lids, then smudge to give it a smoky look. To add more drama, line your bottom lid as well. Touch up morning mascara to keep this look fresh throughout the night. ome adults choose to stay at home and raise their children, and that is fulfilling what their life’s goals have been all along. Not every parent, however, gets the opportunity to make that choice. Some parents have to work while other parents want to work. In either case, life can become a balancing act. The following tools will help any working parent get closer to achieving a more productive home life while achieving their professional dreams.

Let Go

Know that not everything will look as you thought it would. Do you picture yourself a captain of industry while effortlessly raising four children? You may need to alter that picture a bit. There is no shame in hiring a nanny to keep your kids entertained while you pound the pavement to start your own business. Working from home may seem like a good idea, but do not be fooled, it also comes with unique challenges. While you may have the opportunity to structure your day to your liking, you will still need to get actual work done once in a while. There are distractions at home that you might not have at an office such as kids, dirty laundry, or the pesky TV in the living room. If you are a new mom, you will have to work around the baby’s schedule, which can be difficult with a job that insists on a rigid structure. Keeping your kids on a set schedule will help. When baby goes down for a nap, you can finally get some quality work time in! If you are feeling exhausted, feel free to schedule your own nap time as you will not be as productive if you are tired. Knowing yourself and your limits will help you understand what you are capable of and help you achieve your goals.

Plan Ahead

Work outside the home? Be smart about your time! Bring your lunch and eat it at your desk. When your lunch break comes along, be sure to take it. Use that hour to run errands you had thoughtfully listed out the night before. Buy a planner that includes free space for

Check out www.workingmomsagainstguilt.com. This website not only stresses the importance of finding that work-life balance but also can connect working moms with local resources that may help them along the way. It is hard to be a working parent, but do not let your guilt stop you from achieving all you want in your life. It can be hard to take the time to make yourself happy. Parents, in particular, can feel this guilt as it can become natural to worry about others before yourself. Be sure to take care of yourself, make your needs a priority, and you will become a better parent and employee. With a little planning and a lot of dedication, you can really have it all.

CAREER MAKEUP l a i r o t by Bri Kilroy • photography by Two Eagles Marcus

D

“It’s not about using makeup to change. It’s about enhancing what you already have.” - Erick Gerson, professional makeup artist

Tu

oing your makeup for important events may have you thinking you need to go above and beyond to impress a potential employer. Grand Rapids makeup professional Erick Gerson of E.G. Makeup urges women to show their beauty rather than cover it in an interview-friendly (and work friendly!) makeup tutorial.

Step 1: Prepping and Preparing the Face

Gerson mixed colors to ensure the foundation properly complemented the skin.

2.

Gerson, who is a nine-year makeup industry professional, began his makeup career by accident while volunteering at the Wyoming Theater Company. He chose to ditch his graphic design schooling and follow what excited him. After years of freelance and working for M.A.C., Gerson branched on his own. Gerson has a home studio in Alder Heights for consultation and some small sessions. He usually travels for events such as theatre performances, commercial work for companies, and weddings, but is always open to trying new challenges. He presented this interview-friendly makeup how-to at the Women’s Resources Center earlier this year. Follow these simple steps to achieve a look that will complement your natural features while keeping the work at a minimum.

1.

Tip!

When getting ready for an interview, give yourself extra time with your makeup. If you take five minutes to get ready in the morning, allow yourself 15.

Moisturizer

Moisturize your face before you begin. A well-hydrated face allows makeup to perform at its best and reduces dryness, making your skin an excellent canvas for laying foundation. Apply an oil-free moisturizer with UVA/UVB protection after washing your face. Choosing an oil-free product will keep your face looking healthy rather than greasy. Let dry for a few minutes before applying foundation.

Tip!

Keep in mind that your skin color changes throughout the seasons. Keep different foundations to use throughout the year.

Tinted Moisturizer vs. Foundation

Determine your skin tone by checking the veins on the inside of your wrist. If your veins are more... • blue, you have a cooler skin tone. • green, you have a neutral skin tone. • purple, you have a warm skin tone.

3.

Gerson locates the apple of the cheek, where blush strokes begin for proper application.

Those who have minimal flaws in their skin can get away with a dab of tinted moisturizer. It will hydrate while smoothing out blemishes and uneven skin tone. However, it will not substitute for concealer or foundation.

Foundation offers more coverage and comes in different textures, such as a matte and satin finish, to suit all skin types. When choosing a foundation, match the color to your neck rather than a spot on your hand to achieve a tone closer to your natural skin color.

14

• •

Step 3: Add Some Color

Start in the center of your face, just between your eyebrows. Using a makeup sponge, dab a little bit of foundation onto your face and blend into the skin working outwards. Apply a little extra foundation in areas that have more redness. If you need more coverage in a particular spot, add concealer. Blend from the face into the neck to avoid a foundation border at your jaw line.

Blush

Applying a little bit of blush makes everyone look healthier. Use blush rather than bronzer for a naturallooking, healthy glow. A peachy pink tone will look good on everyone and will flatter all skin tones. •

Finish by setting your foundation with a translucent powder that will absorb excess oil. Avoid a facial dust storm by tapping the brush on your wrist to get rid of excess powder. • •

Sweep your brush lightly over the blush. Tap the handle on your wrist to get rid of excess powder. Apply a minimal amount of blush on the apples of your cheeks in a sweeping motion, and blend out toward the temple.

Tip!

A cream blush can be used to achieve a more natural finish and is recommended for mature skin types.

Using a powder brush, apply with gentle taps in the center of your face starting at your forehead. Follow down to the side of your nose, under your lips and on your chin.

Lipstick

Step 2: The Eyes Have It

Wear a lipstick that add color and looks formal for a job interview. It is better to look more formal than too casual. If your lipstick is a nice peachy color, it can double as a blush.

It’s no discovery how important eye contact is during a job interview. Eyes reveal interest, confidence and professionalism, so it’s priority to give them care.

For a pop, choose a color just a little darker than your natural lip color, giving your lips a nice tint without overpowering the rest of your features. Keep lipstick at the front of your lips. Applying it too far back could lead to stained teeth.

Voila! Your work-confident makeup is complete.

Eyeliner

Eyeliner opens up the eyes and creates the illusion of thicker lashes. Skip the liquid liner and use a black or brown pencil that will keep your look soft and subtle rather than harsh and drastic. • • • •

Create little dots starting from the center of your eyelid where the lashes meet the skin. Dot to the corners of your eye. Connect the dots with your pencil. This will achieve a straight line without any gaps or uneven elevation with your eyeliner. Repeat on your opposite eye. Use the same technique on your lower lid with a softer shade of liner like brown or grey. It will aid in opening up the eyes without looking like you dramatically outlined them.

Eyebrows

Before

Well-groomed brows frame your eyes and face, and show that you pay attention to detail. Tweeze any stray hairs growing outside your eyebrow outline and consider using brow gel or a little bit of hairspray to keep your brows in place. •

• •

Choose a pencil at least one shade lighter than your hair color to keep them from looking too stark. If your brows are blond, use a shade darker than your eyebrow color. Start by drawing in individual hairs in the bare areas within your eyebrow. Use a light, feather motion as you continue at the base of your eyebrow towards the tail, making your eyebrows more defined.

Mascara

Mascara is a must and shouldn’t be skipped in your makeup routine. Use up to two coats of mascara for longer, fuller lashes. • • •

With your brush, get as close to the roots of the eyelashes as possible. Wait a couple of minutes for mascara to dry before applying a second coat. Add a touch of mascara on your lower lashes.

Tip!

If using eyeshadow, neutral colors look good on all skin types and are best for job interviews. Use a shade such as tan, brown and cream.

If you get mascara on the skin below your eye during application, wait for it to dry before reaching for a Q-tip. Letting it dry allows you to simply brush it off rather than risk rubbing off any foundation.

The

T

FOR PRODUCTIVITY by Bri Kilroy

here are times when the body and mind are at peak performance for certain tasks. Whether sending an email, holding a meeting, or studying information, jot these guidelines in your planner to get things done when your body and mind are at their best. Remember the best time to...

Send an email: 6-8 a.m. People are often encouraged to not check email first thing in the morning, but The Washington Post knows you’re going to do it anyway. As a result, The Washington Post says the earlier you send an email, the more likely the recipient will see it. This will also keep your email from getting buried by spam and promotions.

Take a Multivitamin: 8 a.m. (with breakfast) Multivitamins should be taken with food, and breakfast provides the perfect meal to do so. Some reactions to multivitamins include nausea, and you will feel better getting nauseous in the comfort of your home. You’re also less likely to forget by taking it at the beginning of the day.

Read and Retain: 8 a.m. for memorization, 10 p.m. for long retention RealSimple.com says your immediate recall is at its highest during early morning. Use your morning commute or cup of coffee to review points to cover at the day’s important presentation. Keep information in your memory through the night by studying late in the evening. The natural organization of the brain makes this the prime time to read a book or study for an exam, interview, etc. Use this set up to study during the evening and review the information in the morning for top memory performance throughout the day.

Complete Personal Errands: 10 a.m. The best time to go to the store and not waste your company’s time with errands is within the first hour the store is open. This is when the best ratio of staff-tocustomers is available, as opposed to lunch hours when customer service is lacking performance.

Take a Break: every 90 minutes throughout the workday Studies prove our brains benefit from short, 15-minute breaks that allow us to step away from the desk and computer screen. Those 90 minutes kick off with our brain’s highest attention, which decreases to its lowest as that hour and a half wanes. The good news is it only takes 15 minutes away from what you were doing to recharge.

Post on social media: noon-5 p.m. on weekdays Facebook and Twitter: The majority of Facebook and Twitter posts are made during the workweek with the highest engagement peaking Thursdays and Fridays. The high amount of clicks and shares occurring at noon or 6 p.m. could be due to lunch breaks and shifting through the Internet after the commute home.

16

September 2015

LinkedIn: The most posts on the world’s largest professional network happen, coincidentally, during business hours. This is not because we’re wasting company time on LinkedIn, but because authors know the highest response rate will come at noon and 5-6 p.m. It’s always nice to have a fresh post waiting for readers when they log on.

Schedule a meeting: 3 p.m. Having a meeting in the afternoon hits the sweet spot by being early enough to avoid running out of time as the day comes to a close, but late enough to give everybody time to prepare which, in turn, gives employees the confidence to show up.

Ask your boss for something: 5 p.m. The art is choosing a time where workplace stress is low, and your boss has time to listen. If you’re asking for a raise, shoot for after a big project is completed, deadline has been met, or you’ve proved your ability in some way. You could do all of these things and still get declined which is why it’s important to wait until the end of the day to spring a request. No one wants to get rejected and spend the rest of the day avoiding eye contact with the boss.

Creatively think: after 6 p.m. Research shows the best creative thinking is done when standard logic has clocked out for the day. Save problems that require original thinking for the evening when your mind is likely to approach them from a different angle.

FUNCTION and FOCUS I n

Y o u r

H o m e

O f f i c e by Jan McCollum

One in five Americans work from home,

and the number is growing each year. Corporate downsizing, environmental concerns regarding the number of commuters and employee retention are just a few of the dynamics behind the statistics. Though fewer women make up the external labor force today than 10 years ago, more women are working from home now in order to maintain flexible schedules as they build their careers, care for their children, manage households and pursue educational opportunities. These employees, stay-at-home moms, entrepreneurs, and small business owners comprise the new “internal labor force” of our modern society. Whether we’re a part of the external or internal workforce, having a dedicated place at home to help us function and focus has become not only standard, but necessary! In Alvin Rosenbaum’s book, The Complete Home Office, he chronicles the home office evolution. American homes began to include smaller rooms known as “studies” during the last half of the nineteenth century as architects began to address the human need to cocoon, to find refuge and solitude apart from the larger public spaces of the home. These private spaces became family spaces over the years with the introduction of radio and television. Studies became dens, and dens became family rooms with a desk tucked away in the corner for letter writing or paying household bills. Now in the twenty-first century, it seems we’re bringing the home office back! What makes a home office a place of focus and productivity? Initially, it is the idea of being able to exercise control over the space we create, a luxury not often possible in our daily lives. Then, it is about consciously designing the space to speak to the function and the person who will work there. Whether you need a fully functioning office complete with phone, fax, and copy machine, or a small corner of the family room to review sports schedules and pay the monthly bills, start your design process by exploring these questions: • • • • • •

How will I use the space? What furnishings and equipment do I have? What do I need? How will I need to organize the space? Will others be using the space? Will I be meeting with clients in the space? Where will I locate the space? What level of privacy do I need?

As you develop your space plan, it is helpful to tape the outlines of the larger pieces on the floor and walk through the space. How does it feel? Lighting plays a central role in the comfort and energy of the space. The latest energy guidelines recommend that ambient light not be greater than the level of light that emits from your computer screen. Use a mix of lighting fixtures on different levels, and install dimmers to adjust and customize the light levels in the space. To avoid eyestrain, do not use overhead lights directly above the computer screen. Consider locating your home office in a space with natural light. Color affects mood and impacts energy levels, as well. Choosing the right color for your home office will allow you to maintain focus as you work. Select a color you feel comfortable in. Blues can often drain energy. Reds can give off too much energy and be abrasive after long periods of time. Purple accents can stimulate creativity. Grays, whites, and greens serve as neutrals and can generate a sense of calm. A more saturated color works well in the home office environment. If you love color, use color! As always in design, a successful room will have balance. Integrating the décor of your office area with the style of your home will help achieve this. A combination of soft textures such as fabrics, rugs, and carpeting with the hard surfaces of your desk and file cabinets will help balance the acoustic levels in your space. Most importantly, you should sense a balance of space with self. This is your space. It is an extension of your personality and your spirit. It is the forum for your creativity and respite from the fray. Balance in work creates balance in life! Your contributions are deductible when made and aren't taxed to an employee until distributed. Funds in the retirement program grow tax deferred (or, in the case of Roth accounts, potentially tax free) Retirement plans are usually either IRA-based (like SEPs and SIMPLE IRAs) or "qualified" (like 401(k)s, profit-sharing plans, and defined benefit plans). The IRA type are very cost effective, easy to administer, and easy to understand.

Which plan is right for you? Each plan has unique advantages and disadvantages. You should meet with an advisor to clearly define your goals before attempting to choose a plan. Do you want: ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶

Retirement Plans

By Sandy K Derby, CFP®, ChFC, CASL, LUTCF

To maximize the amount you can save for own retirement? A plan funded by employer contributions, or by employee contributions? Both? A plan that allows you and your employees to make pretax and/or Roth contributions? The flexibility to skip employer contributions in some years? A plan with lowest costs and easiest administration?

Here are Two Plans Designs that make it simple and easy.

SEP IRA A SEP IRA lets you to set up a plan for yourself, and each of your eligible employees. You contribute the same percentage of pay for each employee. You don't have to make contributions every year, offering you some flexibility when business conditions vary. For 2015, your contributions for each employee are limited to the lesser of 25% of pay or $53,000. The plan must cover any employee aged 21 or older who has worked three of the last five years and earns $600 or more.

SIMPLE IRA

IN KEEPING

with the theme of this month’s issue, I wanted to explore a couple of the options small businesses have to provide retirement savings plans for themselves and their employees. It is no secret that women retire with less income and savings than men. This is, in part, because most jobs that women hold do not offer retirement plans. There are advantages for the owner, as well as the employees. As an owner, you have several options that may meet your needs. It can be easier and more cost efficient than you may know to provide a retirement savings plan for your business.

A retirement plan can have significant tax advantages for you and employees:

SIMPLE IRA plans are easy to set up. The SIMPLE IRA plan is available if you have 100 or fewer employees. Employees can elect to make pretax contributions in 2015 of up to $12,500 ($15,500 if age 50 or older). You must either match your employees' contributions dollar for dollar--up to 3% of each employee's compensation--or make a fixed contribution of 2% of compensation for each eligible employee. (The 3% match can be reduced to 1% in any two of five years.) Each employee who earned $5,000 or more in any two prior years, and is expected to earn at least $5,000 in the current year, must be allowed to participate in the plan. Sandy K. Making a difference in the lives of others has always been important to Jacque. “I believe we are put on this earth to make a difference,” she says. “And I’ve come to believe that being of service is the rent we pay for the privilege of being here.” Looking back, Jacque says her ‘difference making’ started in Brownies and was nurtured in Girl Scouts. “I earned virtually every badge there was; I think I still have them,” she chuckles.

“I’ve always been health conscious. My intense interest in the body and health, as well as my husband’s, came as a result of Amy, his daughter, being diagnosed with a serious illness when we were dating; she was 11 at the time. We lost her one year later. That changed both of us and it changed how I looked at everything, especially health,” she said.

Jacque has a successful business track record and has been involved in both business and volunteerism in Southwest Michigan for more than 40 years. A lifelong resident of the area, she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at WMU, has a lengthy list of community and donor involvements, has served as president of the Battle Creek Rotary Club, is a Kalamazoo Chamber Ambassador, and a member of both the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Chambers. She is a member of BNI Leading Edge, Women’s Business Bureau, Women Who Care of Kalamazoo County, Inforum Professional Women’s Alliance and is a Life Member of both the WMU Alumni Association and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League, to name a few.

“Everything I have done business and volunteer wise has led me to what I do today. Next to my family, my passion is ASEA and RENU 28 because they clearly make a difference in the lives of others, both physically and financially.”

Jacque is married to Scott Carter and, in addition to Amy who is deceased, they have a daughter, Ashley Carter Youngblood, a son-in-law Jake and a granddog, Sunny.

Anita Vlachos Anii Skincare The original formula for Anii Skincare was developed decades ago in the Netherlands, by Anita Vlachos. What started out with one product, for family and friends, has developed into a complete, all natural, full line of products. Anii’s skincare products are made with the finest, mostly Certified Organic ingredients, to ensure ingredients that contain no herbicides, pesticides, or other unnecessary toxins. The Toner, The Cleanser, The Face and The Serum, when used as a system, are truly a rejuvenating powerhouse. Simply Soothing is an absolute must for people who have been in the sun, and are experiencing tight and burned skin, it is the best after sun product available today. It is also a fantastic cream for those of us who are undergoing radiation treatments. The cream is extremely soothing, and the ingredients do not interfere with the procedures. What we put on our skin is just as important as what we put in our bodies. The skin is our largest organ, and whatever is put on it, ends up in the bloodstream in minutes. Do not fall into the trap of “Organic” and “Natural”, these terms are not regulated and have no real meaning. Be an informed consumer, and read ingredients. If you can’t pronounce it, put it back on the shelves. Anii Skincare products leave your skin with a youthful glow. Anita looks forward to answering any questions you may have. Anita resides in Kalamazoo with her husband, is mother of two daughters and a son, and Oma of two grandsons and two granddaughters.

Jan Murphy Founder Jan Murphy is the founder of Women’s Business Bureau, which is based in Kalamazoo and provides a business networking platform that brings like-minded women together to meet, connect, share and laugh. The WBB provides an opportunity for women to learn leadership skills and to be involved with peer-to-peer mentoring, while sharing their skills, knowledge and business expertise. The goal of WBB is to build self confidence in women so that they can achieve their greatest dreams. Member and partners will be sponsoring college students, giving them the opportunity to network with women business professionals in order to learn proper business etiquette and superior communication skills. The goal of WBB is to be a unifying force that helps ensure that all women (and girls) are empowered and ready for a career and the world. Jan’s belief is that there is nothing more rewarding than helping people find success and happiness and she loves to help women learn to collaborate, grow, build, and connect with other women in order to inspire change, fellowship and growth. Drawing upon her years of success in the corporate arena and as an entrepreneur, Jan enthusiastically shares her knowledge and experience with others so that they can enjoy financial and career success by building and growing their businesses. Prior to moving to Kalamazoo from Georgia and Alabama, Jan spent many years paving the way in what were typically non-traditional roles for women. She was the first female hired as a sales agent for a major insurance company at the age of 22, the first woman to open a mortgage banking operation in Atlanta for a Fortune 500 company and she founded and ran the second largest woman’s business organization in Georgia. After the success of her women’s business organization, she founded and ran an all-male business networking organization in Atlanta after several businessmen requested that she help them learn how to better connect and build relationships by networking. Due to her reputation for success, Jan has appeared on several national radio shows as a guest and was a guest on an international women’s show based out of Atlanta. She has also been a keynote speaker for business associations, chambers and schools. Jan has four adult children and, when not sharing her deep passion for helping women reach their goals, she likes to spend her free time reading and traveling. She finds inspiration from Zig Ziglar and his quote, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it”, is one of her favorites. “You can have everything in life you want if you will help enough people get what they want” is another favorite. Under Jan’s leadership, Women’s Business Bureau is a quickly growing networking group. Her mission is to provide specialized training for companies and individuals that is life-changing, improves employee engagement, creates a success mindset, and helps more people to enjoy greater financial security by achieving their goals.

n September, studios begin launching their more risky Oscar fare. The month brings a ton of content and a slew of diversity. Additionally, the month features several movies that focus on more complex emotional beats and motivation. Nothing is better than a stronger woman that means business, and this month gives audiences the slate of movies they need to grow the confidence to move on.

The Intern

(September 25) This new movie is directed by one of the best female directors in Hollywood, Nancy Meyers. It stars Robert De Niro as an elder widower who gets sick of retirement and becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, and Anne Hathaway as his boss, who portrays her character with complex versatility and a tremendous amount of talent. Sometimes you need a movie to inspire and entertain you, and this movie appears to be just that.

Black Mass

The Walk

(September 30) As his follow-up to Flight, director Richard Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) takes on the decision for a man to walk between the two trade towers. The movie takes advantage of Immersive 3D, one of the technologies Zemeckis has championed during the last 20 years. (September 18) Johnny Depp comes back in a true Tour De Force performance that should elevate him back on the A-list portraying infamous killer Whitey Bulger. Starring in a fictional biopic, Depp faces off against an FBI agent played by Joel Edgerton. The film is directed by Scott Cooper, who’s previously acclaimed works include Crazy Hearts and Out of the Furnace. Whitey Bulger became headline news when he resurfaced about a year ago, so there’s a lot of buzz around the project. Consider it a new spin on crime movies like The Departed.

Boil the noodles in salted water as instructed on the package. In a small saucepan, add the tomatoes and heavy cream. Bring the mixture to a simmer and allow it to cook for about 5 minutes, or until the tomatoes are rehydrated slightly. Preheat the oven to 375 F. In a large skillet, melt the butter and classic olive oil together over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides. Sear the chicken on both sides until just golden brown. Transfer the chicken to the oven and continue to cook for 6-10 minutes, depending on thickness. The internal temperature should read 165 F. Remove the chicken from the oven and allow it to rest. In a bowl, mix together the tomato, garlic, basil, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Allow the sauce to sit for at least 30 minutes to develop the flavor.

Bruschetta Chicken with Homemade Croutons Makes 4 servings

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, about 6 ounces each 1 cup of your favorite ripe tomatoes, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped 3 slices of white bread, chopped into 1/2 inch cubes 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons classic olive oil 1 tablespoon butter Salt and black pepper to taste

In a clean skillet, toss the bread cubes and remaining olive oil together and cook them over medium heat for about 10 minutes, tossing occasionally, until golden brown and crisp. Transfer the finished croutons to a paper towellined plate to cool and sprinkle with a bit of salt. Serve the chicken topped with sauce and croutons.

Ginger-Soy Glazed Salmon Makes 4 servings

1 1/2 pounds salmon, kept whole or cut into 4 equal pieces 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, minced Juice of half a lemon 1/4 cup vegetable or peanut oil plus more for brushing 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Preheat the oven to 425 F and brush a baking sheet lined with oiled foil and lay the salmon on it. Bake the salmon for 10-12 minutes, depending on thickness, basting with the remaining glaze half way through baking. Enjoy with a side salad or vegetable of choice.

Quick and Healthy Meal Ideas to Start the School (and Work) Day the Right Way

W

by Cindy Bjorkquist

Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

ith the start of a new school year, it’s the perfect time to begin thinking of ways to integrate healthier foods into the school day, including breakfast and lunch, that the whole family will enjoy.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but also the one that’s most often skipped. The chaos of mornings during the school year includes trying to dress kids, pack lunches, catch the bus and get yourself to work on time—all things that make breakfast an easy meal to miss. Sending your kin off to school with a full belly is important because it provides them with the energy they need to concentrate in the classroom and prevents that mid-morning slump. Children who eat breakfast perform much better in their schoolwork and have more energy throughout the day for physical activities. Eating breakfast consistently helps children maintain a healthy weight, too. Breakfast doesn’t have to be another morning chore; it can be a quick and easy step to integrate into your morning routine. Skip the sugary cereal and give kids healthier options that are probably already in your kitchen. Focus on providing kids a balanced breakfast that contains protein, nutrients, healthy fats and carbohydrates.

1.

Banana Sandwich: Swap a high fat, high calorie egg, bacon and cheese sandwich for a much healthier fruit counterpart. Slice a banana right down the middle in half. Spread peanut butter or almond butter on both halves of the banana for added protein. Squeeze out a half of a tablespoon of honey onto each banana slice. Sprinkle nuts of your choice, raisins or trail mix on top of the honey for a good source of fiber.

2.

Breakfast Popsicles: Popsicles for breakfast? Think how easy that is to sell to your kids! Mix low-fat yogurt of your choice (use Greek yogurt for an extra boost of protein to stay full longer) into a bowl with your favorite fruit. Poor mix into a popsicle container and place in freezer overnight. In the morning you’ll have a nutritious breakfast kids will love and enjoy on the go.

3.

Fruit and Yogurt Smoothie: Begin by placing yogurt in a blender and adding a generous helping of your favorite fruits. Add in one cup of ice and blend. Add extra ice as preferred. It’s a quick, morning favorite your kids will love.

4.

Fruit and Yogurt Parfait: Pretty layers of yogurt, granola and fruit in a bowl or cup will make your kids think they’re eating dessert, not breakfast. A parfait gives kids the calcium and energy boost they need to start the school day. Like many of these recipes, it’s also easily portable for a child or busy mom to grab in a hurry.

5.

English-Muffin Egg Pizzas: First popsicles, now pizza? Kid-friendly names often make new recipes more appealing to young, picky eaters. Skip the fast food version and make a healthy breakfast muffin in minutes. Hard boil eggs the night before to shave off prep time in the morning. Toast a whole grain English muffin, drizzle with olive oil and top each side with tomato and hardboiled egg slices, followed by a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. This fun breakfast gives kids the carbohydrates and protein they need to get through the day.

1.

Colorful roll-ups: Spread 2 tablespoons of roasted red pepper hummus on a spinach tortilla. Top with enough oven-roasted turkey slices to cover completely, and add sliced tomatoes and low-fat American cheese. Take one stalk of celery and place it at one end of the tortilla. Roll tightly, making sure not to squeeze out the filling. Slice in half on a sharp angle and wrap each half in tin foil to help keep sealed. Pack with yogurt and a granola bar.

2.

Lettuce wraps: Wash a few pieces of romaine lettuce and put whatever leftovers you had from dinner onto the greens. This is great for enjoying leftover barbeque chicken, steak, and vegetables. Add your child’s favorite vegetable toppings on as well, such as shredded carrots or mushrooms, and you turn one meal into two while making lunch a bit more appealing.

3.

Grilled chicken wrap: Try a wrap made with a whole wheat tortilla, grilled chicken, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, provolone cheese, Kalamata olives and Caesar or ranch dressing (or make one with your favorite ingredients).

4.

Pick-me-up: Organic yogurt (any flavor you like), nitritefree turkey or ham with whole crackers, raisins and cherry tomatoes or veggie snack of your choice.

5.

Pita pocket: Try a whole wheat pita and fill with chicken salad or turkey meat. Add lettuce, tomato and honey Dijon mustard. Serve with a fresh fruit salad.

You work

for the money

A

by Rick Vuyst

re you thinking of how to stretch your dollar in the garden, or how to earn green thumb status not by the amount of money spent, but rather results in your landscape? Look no further than the months of September and October for help.

You can use your Dis-“clover” card or your “Grass”-ter card or even maybe your Hosta la Visa card with confidence in the fall for a number of reasons. Discounts on plant material are usually readily available. The weather is cooler and rain is generally plentiful, making it good weather for both you and the new fledgling sprouts. Weed control is more effective in fall. Plants root readily in warm soil, as the plants put more energy into establishment instead of top growth like they do in the spring. The reasons are numerous why fall is splendid for planting. Bulbs can be planted, lawns established and repaired, landscapes created or rejuvenated and even annuals like pansies or ornamental kale can be planted. Plants established in the fall have a jump-start on their counterparts planted in the spring, making you look like a neighborhood genius. Start to prepare your tropical deck foliage plants for cabin fever and the move them inside. Soon tropical breezes will turn into whatever winter pleases, and your tropicals or houseplants should be inside and behind glass by then. I’m referring to plants like hibiscus, mandevilla, crotons, Boston ferns, palms, ficus and the like. It’s a good idea to bathe the plants before bringing them inside. Maybe some fresh

Spring Flowering Bulbs arriving at Wedel's from the Netherlands by September 9th!

sterilized potting soil is in order or systemic insect granules to keep the bugs at bay. Make sure soil is not saturated to avoid a fungus gnat issue in the home. Without the long warm days of sunshine and breezes, the plants will need much less water in the months ahead. Fall is the time to invest in bulb planting. With a good, well-drained soil and proper depth it is as easy as dig, drop, done. And oh “deer”; if Bambi is a problem in your neighborhood, don’t worry. Bulbs like Dutch iris, alliums, daffodils, fritillaria will do just fine. If you want to plant tulips or crocus, you will need to have the repellent handy next spring. I successfully had a great batch of yellow tulips this spring and protected them with milorganite and a repellent. They were beautiful and the animals “deerly” departed to another area in the neighborhood. Make your effort and your money count by actively gardening in the fall. You work “yard” for the money and next spring, you’ll be glad you did!
