OB-GYN, P.C. is partnering with St. Luke’s Diaper Bank for the First Annual Holiday Diaper Drive! The National Diaper Bank Network tells us that: ⁕ 1 in 3 U.S. families report suffering from diaper need. ⁕ Government assistance programs do NOT cover diapers. ⁕ Diaper need impacts physical, mental and economic well-being of children and parents. ⁕ Diapers can cost $70-$80 per month. ⁕ Babies need 6-10 diapers a day. ⁕ Without diapers, babies cannot participate in early childhood education programs. ⁕ Diaper banks help meet diaper need by providing diapers to nearly one million infants and toddlers each year. Throughout the month of December, OB-GYN, P.C. wants to collect as many diapers as possible for mothers and families in our community. Diapers are not a gift; they are a necessity. Every baby deserves to have their basic needs met! Please help us meet this need so we, as a community, can raise happy, healthy children. Diapers can be dropped off at: OB-GYN, P.C., 2854 South 11th Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49009 If you need more information, please call 269-345-6197 ext 270 or email KLedlow@obgynpc.com or visit www.stlukesdiaperbank.org.

FROMTHEPUBLISHER “I will honor Christmas
I just enjoyed my last caramel apple for 2016 and I ate it for breakfast! Now it’s time to move on to other seasonal treats like fudge and cookies. Look out waist line, more trouble headed your way. It must be time to increase the work out.
in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” - Charles Dickens
“Our hearts grow tender
As I watch from my desk, fall is giving way to winter, yet there’s still a wealth of color on some of the “die-hard” trees. And for that I’m grateful. We were blessed with such beauty this year. What I realized this fall, more than ever, is how lucky we are to live in Michigan where we can celebrate four entirely different seasons. The view from our windows changes with every season. I truly can’t imagine anything different having lived here all of my life. I think the key is reminding ourselves how lucky we are with each seasonal change. Not only should every season cause us to feel refreshed, it should motivate us to start anew. That’s four times a year when we can reinvent ourselves, our homes and our passions. So let’s get started with some of the great holiday finds we have on the upcoming pages. For our readers that aren’t necessarily looking forward to the Season , we will hold you in our thoughts and pray that you are able to find peace to see you through. Next year will be better.

THE S P A C E BETWEEN
BY JAN MCCOLLUM
I
t is said, on good authority, that there are no two snowflakes alike. A difficult reality to comprehend when looking at a mound of snow. But an evening walk in a soft winter’s snowfall with large fluffy flakes landing gently on the skin reveals for a brief second that what was said on good authority is definitely truth! To discern form, the necessary element is space. Absence, then, is as essential as presence. It is the space in between that allows us to really see something, to interpret shape and line, to discern edges and boundaries, to appreciate form and structure; so let’s take a few minutes to focus on nothing. The temptation when faced with an empty space is to see how quickly we can fill it up. Whether it’s the top of the cocktail table, or an entire room, the void can feel unsettling. Incorporating things into our physical space that define us, helps us create home. Putting those things together in a thoughtful and cohesive way helps us enjoy home.
One of the best ways to start is to completely empty the space. Notice the architecture. Where are
the windows and doors? From what direction does the light come? Is there a natural focal point (fireplace, large window, etc.) in the space? Taking a few moments to stop and really see the structure of a space is central to designing and furnishing it effectively.
Consider function next. Select anchor pieces, such
as sofas, chairs, and beds, placing them out of the way of major traffic patterns, arranging them in a way conducive to the function of the space. Take a step back and notice the space again. Does it feel balanced? We may not fully understand the design principles
8
December 2016
To discern form, the necessary element is space. Absence, then, is as essential as presence”
behind a balanced space, but we can naturally sense when something feels “off” or uncomfortable. Conversely, we feel a sense of resolution when the balance is right. Take a few moments to stand, sit in, and walk through the space. Tweak as needed!
Now bring in the supporting pieces, such as cocktail, end, and occasional tables. A sofa need not necessarily be paired with a cocktail table. A small occasional table or ottoman off to the side can provide surface space for magazines, or a cup of tea, especially in a smaller space. The asymmetry will allow visual room to breathe and add interest.
Placing art and accessories can be especially challenging. Again, bring pieces in individually.
Place them with intention and consideration of form. Businessdictionary.com defines form as the “configuration, constitution or makeup of an item, including its geometrical dimensions, color, density, weight, and other visual characteristics that give it a unique identity and differentiate it from other items.” Form is defined by space, so take care to evaluate shape, proportion, relatability of elements, and most importantly, the physical space which surrounds them. Making sure there is enough can make the difference between chaos and Zen.
Stay grounded! A piece of art installed in a space,
but disconnected from the other elements, will seem extraneous. Connected with a sofa, fireplace, lounge chair and table, or a console, it becomes part of a
composition. In the latter years of Beethoven’s life, he became completely deaf. Cutting the legs off his piano so it lay on the ground, he would lie on the floor next to it so his body could feel the vibrations of the notes as he played the keys. In this way, he was able to connect to the score and compose some of his most amazing works!
Lastly, with everything in place, edit! Take one more
critical look at your space as a whole. Is the furniture arranged comfortably? Does the room feel connected? Do the elements take your eye on a journey through the space? Is there enough nothing in the mix to engender the appreciation of what is there? Is there space between the leaves? Truly beautiful spaces are those with ability to invoke in us an appreciation of the present. They allow us stop a moment for deeper reflection and attention on the moment—here, in this space, in this moment, on this day. Tomorrow is not a concern, just gratitude for today. The Sangria Shop by Erica Shier
Mulled Sangria 1 1 1 4 1 1
bottle Classica sangria cinnamon stick anise star (dried) whole cloves whole apple (a sweeter variety like Ambrosia or Gala) whole orange peel

N
o matter your guest list or menu this holiday season, a bottle of well-crafted sangria can be the perfect thing to bring warmth and life to your gathering. That’s where The Sangria Shop, located on South Sprinkle Road in Portage, comes in. The Sangria Shop is a joint venture between Fernando Costas and Frances Vega. The married couple began the Shop in 2010 in response to the popularity of Frances’ homemade Sangria amongst their friends. Sangria is serious business in the couple’s native Puerto Rico, with each town and family laying claim to their own versions of the delectable drink.
The Sangria Shop offers six different varieties of Sangria, some of which are seasonal and all of which use Michigan grown fruit when available. The Classica is the most versatile of the Shop’s offerings and has won two international awards. It is red-wine based with an infusion of citrus and local fruits and is priced at a very reasonable $15 per bottle. The Ambrosia variety is a mulled sangria “with the perfect balance of fruit and spices” and is the perfect beverage to grace your holiday table. The Sangria Shop offers a strawberry-infused white sangria, called Fragum, as well as the Tropical blend, which features pineapple and other tropical fruits. Wildberry and Stonefruits are the most seasonal of the sangrias on offer at the Shop, so they are not always available. The sangria can be purchased at the shop (open Thursday and Fridays from 5:00 to 9:00 and Saturdays from 1:00 to 6:00) as well as at various locations throughout the Kalamazoo area. The Cheese Lady
A
s the holidays get closer and our calendars get fuller, many of us look for ways to simplify our celebrations while still honoring this season of joy and gratitude. One easy way to make life easier on yourself is to head to The Cheese Lady and let the staff there help you select artisanal cheeses so delicious and unique that your guests will remember your gathering for years to come. The well-trained staff will help you select just the right cheeses and offer advice on which food and wines are perfect for pairing.
Natalie Fuller, owner of The Cheese Lady on West Q Avenue in Kalamazoo, opened her store in March of 2011 after a year of selling at local farmers’ markets showed her there was a real market for her product. She and her entire staff are passionate about what they do. She notes, “We offer over 120 cheeses from around the world, specializing in aged, imported cheeses. All our cheeses are artisanal, small batch, and specialty. Customers are encouraged to sample cheeses each and every visit with a ‘try before you buy’ approach.” The shop also offers a variety of crackers, meats, olives, jams/jellies and beers for creating the perfect holiday spread for your friends and family. The variety of cheeses available at The Cheese Lady lends itself to a wide array of options when creating hors d’oeuvres for your guests to enjoy. Pick from a few of the ideas below to create a spread worthy of Martha Stewart or experiment with your own creations. The sky is the limit!
Top slices of baguette with feta, prosciutto, figs and honey. Spread Chevre (goat cheese) on petit toast and top with pepper jelly. Stuff dried figs with Gorgonzola and drizzle with honey.
Spread pear preserves on your favorite cracker and top with Manchego cheese and a Marcona almond. Top baguette slices with flavorful Iberico cheese and olive tapenade.
The Cheese Lady | 269.353.3050 | www.thecheeselady.net/locations/kalamazoo 7035 W Q Ave, “Texas Corners” | Kalamazoo, MI 49009 Open Tues - Fri 10am - 6pm, Sat 9am - 4pm

NAILING the nails
ails are an easy way to update your style and make an outfit look polished. The latest trends include neutrals, bold red and fun geometric design. Read on for some quick tips to master these trends and “nail” your holiday style.
Neutral Nail Color
Like the little black dress or bold red lip, neutral nail polish is a timeless classic that any woman, regardless of age or style, can pull off. Nude nail polish tends to make the fingers look longer, and with the right shade, gives the illusion of glowing skin. Finding the right shade of neutral isn’t as easy as it sounds. One of the most important factors is matching the color to your natural skin’s undertone, which will be warm, cool or neutral. A quick way to determine undertone is to look at the veins inside your wrist; blue or purple veins typically mean cool undertones, while greenish veins hint at warm undertones. If you have a tough time determining the color of your veins or see a mix of shades, you are likely neutral undertone.
For those with warm undertones, it’s best to stick with gold or yellow-based neutrals for the best-looking nails. Those with cooler undertones can glow with a pink or blue-based neutral. If you’re neutral, you’re in luck! Most colors will work on neutral skin tone. If you’re questioning which option is best for you, seek a professional opinion. A fail-proof tip is to choose a high-shine nude; it keeps the nails from looking lifeless.
Bold Red Nails
While neutral nails are timeless, there is nothing more chic for the holidays than a red manicure. A couple of great holiday choices are a rich, muted shade that complements a darker colored outfit or a true fire engine red that lights up all complexions.
Geometric Nail Art
When it comes to mastering this kind of detail on your nails, masking tape is a woman’s best friend. The tape helps to get a perfectly geometric look. Some of the
most popular designs for the holidays include tiny horizontal or vertical stripes across the nail, sunburst from the top of the nail down to middle of the nail bed or zig zags going down or across the nail. These looks let you have fun incorporating a few colors into the design. If you’re worried about your nails looking too wild, stick with the same colors across all nails to keep it looking polished. Whether you’re looking for a classic neutral, bold red or fun designs, allow your nails to be an expression of your personality. Plus, it’s a great icebreaker if you’re searching for a conversation starter with long lost relatives! Ashley is a marketing professional and worked as a makeup artist in NYC and Southwest Michigan. She started a cosmetics line which celebrates how all women start as a Blank Canvas. Find BC Cosmetics on Facebook.

GARDENING TRENDS for the Holiday Season BY MELINDA MYERS
D
ress up the holidays or give gifts that continue giving throughout the year with these low-maintenance gardening trends. Just add a little fun, classic beauty or style to make it even more memorable now and throughout the year.
Terrariums
These mini greenhouses continue to grow in popularity and are perfect for new or timid gardeners. Just plant a few small tropical plants, moisten the soil, close the lid and you have a self-contained growing chamber. Show off your green thumb with a modern, classic or vintage style vessel. Display the mini garden as a centerpiece for the dining table or buffet, or create a miniature garden in glass to give as a hostess gift. When the party is over, it’s a great memento of a fun holiday gathering.
Succulents
Growing succulents is another low-maintenance garden trend that is perfect for busy gardeners during the hectic holiday season. Just place them in a sunny window and water whenever the soil is dry. It’s truly as easy as that. The small-scale cacti and succulents provide a multitude of opportunities for incorporating them into your holiday celebrations. You won’t need much space to enjoy the subtle colors and dramatic form of these drought tolerant plants. Just select containers that complement, but don’t overpower their charm. Consider buying a few extras for guests to take home and enjoy for years to come. Try using them first to dress up the table by utilizing them as place cards for your guests. Simply add a name to the decorative pot! Another idea is to display them all together in a plant tray, terra cotta saucer or other shallow container to
use as a centerpiece throughout the evening. When the party is over, each guest can pick their own plant to take home.
Display them in an open terrarium, shell, or another decorative container. They make great centerpieces or stunning displays.
Air Plants
Pothos, Philodendron and Ivy
Unique and amazing air plants are all the rage and could certainly be described as the definitive easy care plant. Many are native to rain forests where they grow in the canopy of trees, gathering water and nutrients that pass by. No soil is needed for these versatile plants. Just hang them in a bright location and soak in tepid non-softened water once every week or two.
These plants have long been low maintenance favorites of the indoor garden. This year, consider dressing them up for the holidays with sparkling garland, artificial flowers, berries and greens, or display them in unique containers, baskets or hangers. Go retro and macramé a colorful hanger for your favorite hanging basket, or place the pot in an earthy woven basket, sleek plastic pot or classic wire globe-shaped basket. Add fairy lights for a bit more sparkle on long winter nights.
Make this holiday season warm and memorable with the help of these low-maintenance garden trends and plants. You, your family and friends will enjoy their beauty, charm and easy care nature throughout the new year ahead. Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening.

EVERGREENS Make “Scents”
BY RICK VUYST
I
t’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas. What is the link between our Christmas emotions and the aroma of evergreen? Maybe it’s because smelling like a Fir tree is far better than smelling like a holiday ham. The essential oils of conifers and the gooey resins of pine make us think of the outdoors and fresh air. It is a holiday “scent-iment.” Their natural antibacterial qualities make us feel good about being around them. I still think, however, it is the childhood scent memory of fresh greens and the Christmas tree that is permanently locked in our minds. That aroma takes us back and provides warm memory recall. It just makes “scents” to incorporate evergreen into our holiday season. Christmas just doesn’t feel right if the smell is off. Even the artificial tree scenters that attempt to give a life-like tree an aroma can fall short smelling like a vehicle air freshener dangling or a last minute impulse candle purchase. Below are a list of evergreen options to properly incorporate an honest holiday smell.
DID YOU KNOW? In Japan, going for a therapeutic walk in the woods is known as forest bathing and “taking in the atmosphere of the forest.” I read often how this practice has been studied for its ability to ease stress. Additionally, early explorers of the new world learned from Native Americans the value of pine needles boiled in water, as a sailors pine tea contained both vitamin C and antioxidants.
DOUGLAS FIR
In my opinion, Pseudotsuga, known as Douglas Fir, has the sweetest aroma. A sweet smelling almost citrus smell makes it perfect for arrangement boughs, wreaths, roping or Christmas tree.

CEDAR
This giant forest tree from the West Coast and the greens generally are brought in from Oregon. Foliage, cones, and bark also have the scent of cedar. Look for cedar incense to burn for a stronger, more prominent scent.
BALSAM AND FRASER FIRS
The true Firs (not like the Douglas mentioned above) like Balsam and Fraser are my favorites for holiday scents. A somewhat pungent yet pleasant aroma of resins and essential oils with great needle retention make these trees a “scent”-sational option for evoking aromatic memories at Christmas.

PINE
With Pine the aroma is not just a sentiment. I believe the nose sends a signal to the brain that Pine has healing powers.

Leftover Turkey?
No Problem!
Years ago my “older” sister Sharon shared her solution for leftover turkey with me. It’s been a family favorite ever since. More recently, Sharon spent her time nursing her two “younger” sisters back to health. She flew all the way from Florida to Kalamazoo, gave up her husband’s 70th birthday party and numerous other events just to take care of us. I am very thankful for such a loving, generous sister who is a shining example of her faith and her dedication to family & friends. I’m happy to report both sisters are on the mend, but sad to report that Sharon has returned home to Florida! Thank You Sharon! We love you more than we can say and will always be grateful that you came to rescue us. Meanwhile, we are so happy to share this awesome recipe cleverly called Sharon’s Turkey Recipe! Enjoy!

Dark Chocolate Clementine & Grapefruit Peels makes about 2 cups
5 clementines 1 grapefruit 1 cup sugar 5 ounces dark chocolate
Boil a large pot of water. Slice off the ends of the fruit and score a line down each piece of fruit from top to bottom. Gently remove each peel, keeping the peels whole.
DESSERT. PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECIPES BY EMILY WILSON
Cut the peels into thin strips, about 1/4 inch. Add the peels to the boiling water, blanch for 30 seconds, remove (keep the boiling water going) and rinse under cold water. Repeat 30 seconds of blanching, drain the pot, and run the peels under cold water. Combine 1 1/2 cups water and the cup of sugar to a medium saucepan over low heat. Add the peels and bring to a simmer. Cover and let simmer for one hour. Remove the peels from the sugar and let dry on a rack for ten to fifteen minutes or until slightly hardened. Meanwhile, melt the dark chocolate and get a large piece of parchment ready for the drying peels. Dip the peels in the chocolate and let dry until hardened. Store in an airtight container or in the freezer. If you’d like to use the clementine flesh from the previous recipe, make the following cake!
Clementine Almond Cake makes 12 servings
For the cake: 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 3 eggs 5 to 6 clementines, peeled (seeds removed) 1/2 cup almond flour 2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder For the glaze: 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon rum 1/2 cup powdered sugar Preheat the oven to 325 F. Generously grease a bundt pan with cooking spray. Add the butter and sugar to a mixing bowl and using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat on medium speed for at least 30 seconds or until fully combined. Add the eggs and beat on medium speed for one minute. In a blender or food processor, pulse the clementines until they are partially broken down. Add the clementines to the butter mixture and beat to combine. Then, slowly add the flours, baking soda and baking powder and beat until just combined. Add the batter to the bundt pan and bake for 55 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for 15 minutes before inverting. To make the glaze, melt butter with rum in a microwave and then add the powdered sugar. Briskly stir until combined and immediately drizzle over cake. HAVE A BALL WITH DECADENT
TRUFFLES RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURENDA BENNETT
Keep Warm and look fabulous
P
laying hostess this season, or just need a dish to pass? These truffles are a crowd pleaser with a hidden superfood ingredient— avocado! Your guests will delight in their creamy, rich chocolate taste, and revel about their secret health benefits. Avocados are full of nutrients and healthy fats, which aid in keeping blood sugars stable. Because they’re so mild in taste, the avocado is undetectable, making them a perfect addition to any dessert buffet.
Dark Chocolate Almond Truffles makes about 20 truffles
1 ripe avocado 6 ounces dark chocolate 2 tablespoons coconut palm sugar (or brown sugar) 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (separated) 1/4 cup sliced almonds, chopped
BOOTS
with (and without) the fur
Pit the avocado and mash the flesh with a fork until completely smooth and lump free. Melt the chocolate in either the microwave or on the stove, making sure not to burn it. Once melted, stir in the mashed avocado, palm sugar, almond extract, salt, and 1 1/2 tablespoon of the cocoa powder until thoroughly combined. Place the truffle mixture into the fridge for 30-40 minutes and let cool until partially set. Meanwhile, pulse the almonds several times in a food processor to create small bits. Remove mixture from fridge and use a spoon or small ice cream scoop to dollop out the truffles and form balls with your hands. Rotate between rolling in the remaining 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and chopped almonds. Store in fridge until ready to serve Notes: For plain chocolate truffles, substitute vanilla extract for almond extract. Store in fridge (or freezer if you want them a bit more firm). Christmas CLUTTER-FREE
that will bring joy to those around you without adding excess to their lives.
W
ho doesn’t love the glitz and glitter of the holiday season? Parties and gatherings with food, friends and laughter fill our calendars. Twinkling lights make the night sky seem utterly magical. All those carefully selected gifts are artfully wrapped and lovingly placed under the tree. Some of our best memories are made during this time and there are so many reasons to be grateful. And then, suddenly, it’s over. Our houses seem lost beneath piles of discarded wrappings and thoughtful gifts that we, frankly, don’t have room for. Where will we put it all? Do we even need half of what we received? Why did all this excess seem like such a good idea? The mantra of “simplify” is one that is gaining traction in our busy, consumer-driven culture and is one that can, perhaps, offer a bit of sanity in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Finding a way to show your love through gifts without adding to the pile of “stuff ” most Americans already own seems to be a timely idea. In that vein, we’ve compiled is a list of clutter-free gifts
FUN AT THE MOVIES: For $50 you can buy a refillable popcorn bucket at Celebration Cinema in Portage. This price includes a $20 gift card that can be used to buy tickets or other concession items. If you want to be extra nice, throw in some free coupons for babysitting. Offering to watch the kiddos while Mom and Dad sneak away for a night out is priceless.
LESSONS: Buy your granddaughter the dance lessons she’s been dying to take or spring for the guitar lessons your brother wants but thinks are impractical. MEMBERSHIPS: Buy a family membership to a favorite local attraction, such as The Air Zoo, Binder Park Zoo or the Gilmore Car Museum. This is, quite literally, a gift that keeps on giving as your loved ones enjoy your gift year-round. FOOD BASKET: Do you have a foodie in your life? Fill a basket with delicious and unusual items to enjoy. Fancy chocolates, gourmet olives, specialty jams and sauces… the list of possibilities goes on as far as your imagination will take you!
BY ERICA SHIER
PAMPER THEM: This can be as extravagant as a massage and beauty treatment at a local spa or as simple as a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure. Even better? Make it a girls’ night out and treat for dinner afterwards. HOMEMADE GOODIES FROM YOUR PANTRY: Do you can your own jam or salsa? People love the idea of home-canned items but are often too busy (or lack the know-how) to do if for themselves. A basket of assorted jams, applesauce, salsa or tomatoes makes an excellent gift. EXPERIENCES: Get dressed up and treat your loved one to a night on the town. Have an elegant dinner at any one of Kalamazoo’s incredible restaurants, take in a show at the Civic or Miller Auditorium and take the long way home so you can enjoy all the twinkling lights. This list is certainly not exhaustive. No matter what your budget, there are many ways to celebrate the holidays while keeping it simple and clutter-free. Here’s to a season that is full of all the things that really matter: joy, peace and love. Erica Shier is a married mother of four who loves reading, scrapbooking and thrift stores. When she’s not driving her small pack of children around, she spends her time volunteering, writing and trying to keep on top of the laundry.

A Non-traditional Holiday Season
For those Dealing with Loss and Grief BY ASHLEY CARTER YOUNGBLOOD, LLMSW, LLMFT, CADC, PLT, ADS
together with family and friends as normal in order to stay focused on the things in your life that still remain and nourish you?
H
andling the traditions that come with the New Year and, for those who have religious holidays that fall around the end of the year, the holiday season can be a difficult time for those dealing with loss or grief. Things like divorce or the passing of a loved one or pet makes for a non-traditional holiday season. The question, then, is how can one take care of themselves and do what they feel is right around the holiday season while also putting on a brave face and being present for the merriness that comes with the end of the year? Or, is that what should be expected? The important thing to know about grief is that it, and the process of healing it, looks differently for everyone. What may be “right” for one person may not be “right” for another. You know yourself best – do you need to spend time alone giving yourself a continuous pep-talk and caring for yourself instead of joining in all of the New Year traditions? Or, is it more important to get
The nature of loss and grief is that our emotions about it fluctuate. One day you may be so emotional it is hard to even think about your grief without being a blubbering mess. The next day you may feel guilty because, in the midst of your routine, you almost forgot that the loss ever happened. This is a normal, although confusing, part of grief. Regardless of such confusion, it is important to allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling. The best illustration of this may be the 5 successive stages of grief and what they usually sound like:
DENIAL “My partner can’t have died. He was just here
last week!” ANGER “My boss is an idiot for firing me!” BARGAINING “God, if you let her live, I will do whatever you want me to do.” DEPRESSION “Why celebrate the New Year? I never want to celebrate anything again.” ACCEPTANCE “The family dog was in so much pain it was only fair to put her down.”
and then a couple steps back. Allow yourself to shift between these stages. There is no timeline for grief and others can’t read our minds about what we need. So, speak up. Reach out. Draw on your other sources of support to get you through a non-traditional holiday season. Do things that you enjoy, even if it doesn’t feel natural at first given your loss. Over time, things will feel less forced. The field of psychology is learning that it is not our emotions (e.g. anger, sadness) that cause problems, but our responses to them. So, let yourself feel without judgment. Don’t criticize yourself about how “I shouldn’t be sad about this!” or “I should be over this already!” Use the festivities around the New Year to remind you that you can have a fresh start. Reconnect with those who help you feel better. Do things that bring you joy. Make your own tradition during a non-traditional holiday season. It’s never too late.
During grief, especially with the emotional charge of the New Year’s traditions, we can take one step forward

A Downton Abbey Day BY BRENDA MURPHY
Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess Dress
F
or the past six years Sunday nights have found TV viewers glued to their screens watching Julian Fellowes’ Crawley family at Downton Abbey. From 1914 to 1925, the Crawley saga saw amazing societal and fashion changes – World War I to the Roaring Twenties. You can now walk through a costume chronicle of 36 of these fabulous outfits and jewelry pieces, designed by Anna May Scott Robbins, at The History Museum in South Bend, Indiana. The exhibit is there right now until January 8, 2017. The exhibit lets you up close and personal with your favorite characters from upstairs and downstairs. (You can even ring the bells to “summon the staff”!)
Seriously, the hand work done in making these costumes is truly remarkable and the beading so popular with dresses of this time is absolutely beautiful.” Cora - Edith Wedding Dress
The Dowager Countess or Violet (we know her as Maggie Smith)’s purple dress, Martha Levinson (Shirley MacLaine – the American mother-in-law)’s steamer trunks, fabulous fur coat and hat and the Countess of Grantham or Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) dress for daughter Edith’s wedding are beautifully displayed. Who would have ever guessed Cora’s dress had been made from an old table cloth? Shades of Scarlett O’ Hara – opps, that was drapes, wasn’t it? Seriously, the hand work done in making these costumes is truly remarkable and the beading so popular with dresses of this time is absolutely beautiful. The exhibit is well lighted and nicely displayed. There are benches for a moment of respite. Overall, it’s a definite look-see if you’re a Downton Abbey fan. The museum has a web site so you can buy tickets in advance or you can take your chances at the door which we did. It’s only about an hour and a half drive. Admission is quite reasonable and there is free parking right there. The History Museum, 808 West Washington, South Bend IN 46601, 574.235.9664, www.historymuseumSB.org

SUGGESTIONS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GLORIA TILLER OF KAZOO BOOKS
The Power of When by Michael Breus
We all know about our biological clocks. They make us morning people or night owls. They are our Chronotype and chronotype’s determine our best time to sleep, eat and work and interact with people. This author has divided the population into 4 distinctive types; Dolphins, Bears, Lions and Wolves, each with their own traits. Ever wonder why you are ready to tackle a big project when the people around you are ready to go home. Or why your husband can sleep through the night while you are tossing around at 2 in the morning. Even your eating pattern can affect your optimal time for getting more done in the day or feeling better. This book delves into our unique characteristics and presents a plan to optimize our natural clock to work for us. By understanding our biological programs and using these tips to help us, we can learn to take advantage of who we are to become more productive, healthier and have better relationships.
The Speed of Sound, Breaking the Barriers Between Music and Technology by Thomas Dolby
This is the memoir of how technology becomes music and music creates more technology. Thomas Robinson started creating small radios to listen to the late night programming. He also enjoyed listening to the early musicians playing in the pubs in the 1970’s. Punk rock was the upcoming sound and it needed technology. Thomas changed his name to Dolby on a bet with a fellow musician and it became a nemesis to the Dolby Labs that were working on sound enhancing systems. He gives us an insight behind the music scene into the science of the music and how the sounds are created. His story winds down many roads and is interesting, even if we may not understand all the science.
Born to Run
by Bruce Springsteen Sometimes memoirs are written by other people and they lose their passion; not this story. Bruce began writing down his stories in 2009 after his experience playing for the Super Bowl. He remembers seeing Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan show and that became the turning point in his life. Playing in a bar band around his home in New Jersey he worked his craft to become one of the greatest voices in music. Any of us around in the 70’s and 80’s fell in love with his sound and with the young man. His song writing skills and his ability to show his audience the passion he had was one of the keys to his success. He never seemed to run out of energy, but his story shows us the back story, the part he kept hidden for years on the road and out of the public eye. This is a man who is now in his 60’s and still creating and performing for a loyal audience.
