ecently I had the opportunity to interact with a group of people dedicated to a different way of life than the one I choose for myself. What a great experience! There wasn’t any negativity or aggression from either side of this interaction, just a great sharing of ideas and a chance to ask and answer questions. It was an opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and interact with other hardworking, caring Americans. It felt good to connect in a simple but creative manner and I left feeling richer for having participated. What if we could approach everything this way? If we could be innovative and creative in even the simplest things in life? Think of the possibilities! We could choose cashew butter instead of peanut butter for our PB&Js (yum!) or write with purple ink instead of black. We could add fresh herbs to an old favorite recipe or move our spaces around to give new life to our homes. Once we’ve accomplished small innovations like these, we can move onto something more challenging. Taking small steps at first can motivate us until we are running for new ideas! By now I hope you’ve had a chance to join us at the Expo and that you found and enjoyed your experience with us and left with many new ideas for your home, health and life. Now it’s time to check out the March edition of WLSK, filled with articles that we hope will inspire you to find areas in your life that could benefit from a little inspiration and innovation. YOU GO GIRL! Together we’ve got this! Be strong, be interesting and be interested!

Own It! Own Your Style
BY JENNIFER DEAMUD

f you are in business selling products or services, you may realize that branding is critical to your success. Just as companies must establish a way for customers to recognize who they are, individuals can also benefit from developing a personal brand. Showing your brand through your attire and accessories gives you additional confidence and comfort as you progress through your professional career.
Identify key aspects of your brand. How exactly do you express your brand through your wardrobe? The first step is to identify your key qualities. Here are a few tips to get your started: 1. Identify two emotions you identify with. Are you inspired by opportunities and challenges? Do you approach things with a joyful attitude? 2. Come up with three adjectives that describe you. Get specific. For example, you would not want to use the word “great” to introduce a colleague to a potential employer. “This is Alex, and she’s great.” Instead, you would want to describe Alex
8
March 2017
with adjectives that truly relate to her. “This is Alex, she is the most creative and innovative person I have ever met.” The words you use to describe yourself need to fully convey your uniqueness. Are you organized? Communityoriented? Honest? Enthusiastic? 3. What colors can you add to your wardrobe that evoke your attributes? There are a number of charts available online that will provide you with alignment between colors and the emotions and adjectives you selected. These charts can be very helpful, but it’s up to you to decide how they fit with your brand. For example, when you think about inclusiveness, do you think about blue because it conveys honesty, calmness and faith?
Social Media: Review your social media. Do your posts and images reflect your personal brand? If not, spend an afternoon removing anything that isn’t inline with what you want to communicate as you move forward. Professional Presence: When you attend meetings or networking events, what attributes do you express to those you interact with? If you identified joyful as one of your primary emotions, do you leave every conversation on a positive note?
Embrace who you are.
The more you embrace your attributes, the more memorable you will be. Don’t forget to be true to yourself, and remember that authenticity and honesty are the qualities of every effective brand.
Style it your way.
Once you identify the elements of your brand, you can start infusing them into your appearance and interactions. Style: Assess your closet. Does your style emulate what you want people to remember about you? If you are creative, add a unique piece of jewelry to your daily attire. If you are bold and impactful, consider infusing primary colors into your wardrobe.

Denim with Patches
Patchwork on jeans or a denim jacket is a fun trend that is guaranteed to stay a while since brands like Adriano Goldschmied, Hudson and Free People have sported them in their fashion lines. The patches make a statement on their own, so try pairing them with a basic top and a bootie or a blazer and a pair of classic heels. I like Miss Me’s “Distressed Patchwork Jean” for $104.50.
Midi Skirts Loafers Both retro and chic, midi skirts can be a great go-to piece that can easily be worn for a multitude of occasions. For a special occasion/date night look, pair a pencil midi skirt with a bodysuit and a dramatic choker, or go little more casual and wear it pleated with a cowl neck sweater. Make sure to save this for spring! You will love it with a tee and tennis shoes. Find a great selection at H&M from $20-$40 or try J Crew for fun prints and colors, prices starting at $98.
We saw them in the fall and they will be trending this spring. I love the idea of a block heeled loafer and jeans with a cool frayed hem. Loafers can also be worn in the office by being paired with a shift dress or fluted hem skirt. My favorite pair is the “ Marmont GG” by Gucci for $750; however, Chinese Laundry’s version “Anete” is a great option for only $49.
Chic Backpacks
Backpacks are back and they are more chic and trendy than ever! They are convenient, functional, comfortable, and the many different designs make them a go-to for anything from hiking to a day in the office. For a professional look, try a structured style like Henri Bendel’s “Gramercy Convertible Backpack,” available in Dark Grey and Medium Blue for $450. I cannot wait to get my hands on Rebecca Minkoff’s “Julian Backpack” for $295; this bag has fun details and is sure to update any outfit. Don’t like the hefty price points? No worries! H&M offers similar styles ranging from $20-$40.

Velvet
We have seen velvet on the runways and at the Emmy’s. The irresistible fabric It is soft to the touch and luxurious to the eye. Wear a velvet dress, suit, skirt, a choker, or a loose top that hangs just off the shoulder. Check out Asos for their selection of fabulous velvet tops, priced from $35-$65.

TASTES FROM THE KITCHEN BY ERICA SHIER

ne of the blessings of living in Kalamazoo is access to the ever-expanding food landscape that surrounds us. From farmto-table restaurants to tapas to a booming batch of breweries serving excellent food, the Southwest Michigan area offers seemingly unlimited options for adventurous palates. Jambo African Cuisine, located at 6541 Stadium Drive, is a welcome addition to the diverse food scene that characterizes our community.
place in Michigan serving Tanzanian cuisine, making it a truly unique dining experience.
Jambo was born out of owner Frida Boyd’s passion for the food of her native Tanzania. She came to the United States in 2000 to be near relatives and pursue a nursing degree, but soon found herself longing to follow a different path. In early 2015 she opened the doors of Jambo African Cuisine, offering customers a taste of East African cooking. Fans of Indian food will find hints of spices like cardamom, cumin and coriander to delight their tastebuds while those who love Middle Eastern cuisine will find those influences, too.
When she’s at home in her own kitchen, Boyd loves to experiment with new recipes and encourages other at-home cooks to do the same. She recommends looking for recipes that challenge you and expose you to all different types of cuisine. Not being afraid to try new things can lead to new favorite recipes and serve to open your horizons. “Whatever you do”,she says “cook with passion for the ones you love”. Food is, in her opinion, a source of comfort to be shared with others.
Boyd takes familiar flavors like cinnamon, garlic and ginger and combines them with other, more exotic spices, to recreate the unique flavors of Tanzania for the people of Kalamazoo. The seasonings are imported from Zanzibar to ensure quality and all of the dishes are created from scratch. Boyd notes that her restaurant is the only
With dishes like Beef Pilau (a rice dish), the everpopular samosas and kuku masala (a chicken dish), there’s something new and interesting on the menu for everyone. Boyd notes that Jambo offers several vegetarian dishes and a buffet that is open 11am to 4pm Monday through Thursday and 11 to 5:30 on Friday.
To make authentic Tanzanian pilau at home, simply follow the recipe Boyd has so generously shared with our readers:
Pilau
2 4 1 1 ½ 1 5
cups rice cups water tsp masala spices (a blend of cinnamon, cardamom and rosemary seed) tsp each minced fresh garlic and ginger paste tsp salt onion, chopped tsp vegetable oil
Heat oil in pan over medium heat; add onion and cook, stirring, until golden. Add garlic and ginger paste and cook for a few seconds, then add masala seasoning and water. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat to a simmer and cover, until the water is absorbed and the rice is fully cooked (about 20 minutes). Enjoy!

After hiding in plain sight for so many years, pepper is finally capturing the spotlight. Its up-front bite and lingering sensation offer the next wave of spicy flavor. In these recipes, pepper’s tongue-tingling, bold edge is tempered by naturally sweet ingredients.
TIPS: Dragon fruit is
a tropical fruit with bright pink skin and white or red flesh with tiny black edible seeds. Its flavor is mildly sweet and similar to kiwi. Since the skin is not edible, it must be peeled before eating.
Dragon Fruit & Strawberry Poke makes 10 (2 piece) servings
Pepper’s mouth-prickling boldness is softened by naturally sweet dragon fruit in this creative take on poke. Serve fresh strawberry and diced dragon fruit salad (mock poke) atop a dollop of peppered whipped cream and crispy wonton triangles. Drizzle with a balsamic-pepper syrup for an assertive spice sensation that’s here to stay. 1/2 cup brown rice syrup 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon plus 2 1/2 teaspoons McCormick Gourmet Organic Coarse Ground Black Pepper, divided 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 tablespoons sugar, divided 1 1/2 cups diced strawberries (1/4-inch dice) 5 egg roll wrappers
14
March 2017
1 cup oil, for frying 4 tablespoons butter, melted 1 1/2 cups diced peeled dragon fruit (1/4-inch dice) Bring rice syrup, vinegar and 1 tablespoon of pepper in small saucepan to boil, whisking occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer 15 minutes. Stir in lemon juice. Let stand 1 hour. Strain balsamic pepper reduction through several layers of cheesecloth into small bowl. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Meanwhile, beat cream, 2 tablespoons sugar and another 1/2 teaspoon pepper in medium bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Mix strawberries with another 3 tablespoons sugar in small bowl. Let stand at room temperature 10 to 15 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Set aside. Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut each egg roll wrapper in half to create 2 rectangles. Then cut each rectangle in half diagonally to create 4 triangles.
Heat oil in large skillet on medium heat. Fry triangle wrappers in batches until puffed and golden, about 1 to 2 minutes per batch, turning once. Remove with slotted spoon to paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Mix remaining 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons pepper in small bowl. Brush fried triangle wrappers with 1/2 of the melted butter. Sprinkle each triangle wrapper with 1/2 teaspoon of the pepper sugar mixture. Brush triangles again with remaining butter. Place triangles on baking sheet. Bake 6 minutes or until golden brown and pepper sugar mixture is caramelized. Let cool slightly on wire rack. To assemble for serving, place 1 tablespoon peppered whipped cream on the wide side of each triangle crisp. Top with 2 teaspoons each strawberries and dragon fruit. Drizzle with balsamic pepper reduction.

Black Pepper Date Cocktail Hello, happy hour! This unique Black Pepper Date Cocktail features a fiery simple syrup starring the contrasting flavors of bold black pepper and naturally sweet Medjool dates. Mix with dark rum, elderflower liqueur and fresh lime juice to experience the next wave of spicy, refreshing flavor.
Black Pepper Date Simple Syrup:
Black Pepper Date Cocktail:
10 ounces whole Medjool dates, pitted (about 17 dates) 2 cups water 1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon coarse ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon crushed rosemary 1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup ice 2 tablespoons Black Pepper Date Simple Syrup 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) dark rum 1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) elderflower liqueur 4 1/2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
enough syrup for 12 Black Pepper Date Cocktails
makes 1 serving
For the Black Pepper Date Simple Syrup, bring all ingredients except cornstarch to simmer in medium saucepan, stirring to dissolve sugar. Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve, being careful not to press too much of the pulp solids through the strainer. Place cornstarch in small bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of the strained date mixture with the cornstarch; mix well. Return remaining strained date mixture back to the saucepan. Stir in cornstarch mixture with whisk until well blended. Bring to simmer. Cook and stir 1 minute. Remove from heat. Cool slightly. Store syrup in tightly covered, clean container in refrigerator until ready to use. (Makes 1 1/2 cups syrup. Enough for 12 Black Pepper Date Cocktails.) For one Black Pepper Date Cocktail, place ice in cocktail shaker. Add Black Pepper Date Simple Syrup, rum, elderflower liqueur and lime juice; shake until well mixed and chilled. Strain into beverage glass. Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary, if desired.
TIPS: Leftover Black
Pepper Date Simple Syrup can be used to prepare additional cocktails.
Serve immediately.

Christy's Fine Furniture on
Creating a new look for your home in the
New Year doesn’t have to break the pocketbook. Christy’s Fine Furniture on Consignment, located at 3017 Oakland Drive, prides itself on being Kalamazoo’s premier place to find fine furniture on consignment. With a mix of gently used furniture and accessories, as well as new items, customers are sure to find what they need to update their spaces for 2017 at prices that are hard to beat.
Consignment While the vast majority of the stock on offer at Christy’s is second-hand, the store also offers a selection of new furnishings and accessories. Owner Christy Lamson and Interior Designer Brenda Welling (formerly of Welling, Ripley and Labs) have carefully and thoughtfully chosen to offer two lines, Temple and Masterfield, to their customers. They selected these manufacturers for their attention to detail, quality and business practices. The pieces, like this sectional from Temple, will provide comfort, support and style to your family for years to come.
Christy’s offers a nice array of accessories for the home, including artwork, pillows, rugs and crystal. You’ll also find entire sets of china (pictured above) and other serving pieces for the dining room and kitchen. The selection changes daily, so many customers make weekly trips to the store to see what’s new.
Christy’s has always offered jewelry on consignment, but the store has recently increased its selection…a change that has met with remarkable success. Even if you’re not in the market for home furnishings, it is well-worth a trip in to check out the array of beautiful, quality jewelry available at amazing prices.
For years, the idea of buying one’s furniture second-hand evoked visions of beat-up and dated items that no one really wanted to bring into their homes. Now, as people are recognizing that recycling furnishings is good for both the planet and the budget, the market for gently used furnishings and accessories is steadily growing. “Vintage-chic” has become all the rage… and Christy’s has a regularly rotating stock of furnishings in excellent condition like the retro-inspired dining set pictured here.
If you have pieces to sell at Christy’s, you can simply email them pictures of the items at christysconsignment@gmail.com or call the store at (269)344-5188 for more information. It’s All In Your Gut:
A Beginners Guide to
PROBIOTICS
BY BRANDI GRIMMER
The use of probiotics has skyrocketed over the last year. While it may seem like the new trend, research is confirming their benefits in all areas of health
B
efore we can understand probiotics, we need to understand our microbiome. The intestinal tract is home to about 100 trillion different organisms, bacteria and yeast. They have many functions within the body, including supporting digestion and nutrient absorption, producing vitamins (vitamin K, B vitamins), boosting the immune system and minimizing inflammatory reactions. 70 percent of our immune system lies in our digestive tract, and our gut can even produce serotonin, the chemical responsible for mood regulation. Ideally, we want a ratio of 85 good to 25 bad organisms. If this ratio becomes imbalanced, problems arise and we become sick. The biggest offenders to an imbalance are diet and the use of medications like antibiotics, acid blockers and anti-inflammatories. Think of your gut as the soil and the bacteria as the seeds— if the soil is lacking in nutrients from poor diet and medication use, the seeds won’t grow. This is where probiotics come in, as they are a form of soluble fiber that feeds the good bacteria. The only way to repopulate the gut with good bacteria is by switching to a whole food, low-sugar diet and incorporating more probiotics.
KIMCHI KOMBUCHA MISO One way to get probiotics is by eating fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, kombucha, miso or sauerkraut. For those that don’t tolerate these foods well, oral probiotics are available. There are a lot of probiotic products on shelves today, making it pretty daunting to know what to take. The key is to look for the listed bacterial strains and colony forming units (CFUs). Generally, multi-strain products with a minimum of 10 billion CFU are recommended.
Probiotics hold the key to a better digestive system, stronger immunity and improved mental health. Conditions like eczema, autoimmune diseases, frequent colds and candida overgrowth are all issues that arise from poor gut health. Everyone can benefit from incorporating more of these marvelous bacteria into their diet!
Brandi is a certified nutritional consultant at Keystone Pharmacy. She believes that total health is dependent on proper diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation.
The only way to repopulate the gut is to repopulate the good bacteria by switching to a whole food, low-sugar diet and incorporating more probiotics. 24

KOMBUCHA the art of brewing at home
Blueberry
Apricot
Original
BY SARAH ANDERSON
K
ombucha: it’s the effervescent tea concoction that has been gaining the attention of millions. As innovative as this drink seems, people have been drinking it—and brewing it—for thousands of years. Kombucha is sweet tea that has been fermented by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (known as the SCOBY). The Chinese refer to it as the “Immortal Health Elixir,” and it is said to detoxify the body, reduce joint pain, reduce inflammation, help fight cancer, and bring balance to the gastrointestinal system, which has been linked to mental health. This bubbly beverage can be found locally at coffee shops or health food stores, and many people are opting to brew it in the comfort of their own homes.
How is it done?
At-home brewing is fairly simple. A SCOBY is placed in a lukewarm glass gallon jar of sweet tea and starter tea (leftover Kombucha from the last batch or store-bought). The jar is covered
SCOBY
with a towel or cheesecloth and a rubber band or a tie is placed around the rim to secure it. Then it sits for seven to 14 days depending on the desired level of sweetness. The less it ferments, the more sweet it is. Once the brewer decides that it is the perfect combination
26
March 2017
of sweet and tart (this is done by sliding a straw on the side of the jar so as not to disturb the SCOBY), the second fermentation can happen. The second fermentation is where the bubbles form and flavors can be infused. The process begins by removing the SCOBY, pouring the tea into glass bottles and adding any ingredients for infusion. The bottles sit for another two or so days until the brewer is ready to perform a taste test. The chosen bottle must cool in the refrigerator for six hours before opening, and if the brewer is satisfied with the flavor, then they can place the rest of their Kombucha in the fridge and enjoy.
What about the equipment?
To get started brewing at home, the following is required: 1 stock pot 1 gallon glass jar 6 glass bottles Organic black or green tea Organic cane sugar 1 strainer if using loose leaf tea A bottle of store bought original Kombucha A SCOBY (can be purchased or made at home)
What the experts say
Emily Helmus, owner of Bloom Ferments, the first commercially produced Kombucha in West Michigan, gave us some advice for those looking to brew at home. Educate yourself ahead of time so you know what to look for throughout the brewing process. Attend local classes or read up before starting. Here are some books to look into:
The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz (a guide to all sorts of fermentation) The Big Book of Kombucha by Alex LaGory and Hannah Crum Kombucha Revolution by Stephen Lee and Ken Koopman Know that Kombucha should not make you sick. There are special bacteria and yeast in Kombucha that keep harmful bacteria at bay. The biggest risk associated with at-home brewing is mold, and you will see it if its’s there. Know your body. It may take a little while for your system to adjust to Kombucha. Start with 4-ounce servings if you’re new to it. Kombucha will put your body in a position to heal itself, so there could be negative side effects associated with detoxification at first. Enjoy it! A healthy gut will improve your mood, and the probiotics will boost your immune system. Kombucha should help you on your way to a happy, healthy lifestyle. Sarah shuffles between editorial support, content production and advertising sales at WLM. She loves her job so much, and isn’t just saying that to impress her boss.

All I need you to do is reserve a 5-Game Pack. And if you do, dinner’s on me because I’m also giving you all-inclusive food and drink until the 5th inning. We are even building a 5-Pack pavilion for you to skip the general concession lines and enjoy your food. These packs start at $65, which is $13 per ticket. For most teams, $13 doesn’t even get you in the door. If you plan to come out at all this season, it’s the way to go. Don’t worry that you don’t know your schedule. If the dates don’t work for any reason, we can switch them out for another that does. (We’ve already sold out of our first plan.)

rom the mortal and pestle to the garlic press, there have long been tools that enhance the art of cooking and speak to the culture behind certain dishes. Culinary gadgets equip the everyday chef with the ability to produce gastronomical wonders, expand the possibilities of the average kitchen and create a connection to what we feed our bodies. The following innovative gizmos provide a fresh, enjoyable and modern take on the ordinary cooking experience.
Üllo
Do you want your wine to taste as though it came straight from the vineyard? Say hello to the Üllo! This inventive filter utilizes Selective Sulfate Technology™ to remove sulfates and restore the natural taste of wine. Sulfates are added to wine during production to prolong the life of the bottle, and some claim they are the culprit of the infamous wine headache. Attach a single filter to your glass or purify a whole bottle with a Üllo decanter and dream of rolling Tuscan hills while you sip away.

Launch Your Landscape Plans with Easy-Care
Dahlias BY MELINDA MYERS
I
t’s never too early to plan for a memorable grand finale in this year’s garden! Dahlias are spring-planted bulbs with colorful flowers that bloom continuously from midsummer to the first fall frost.
Early in the season, the foliage of these easy-care plants provides a lush green backdrop for nearby annuals and perennials. As other plants begin to wan from the summer heat, dahlias burst to life, filling the garden with their impressive petals for months to come. There are several types of dahlias and many ways to use them. Short dahlias, like the Gallery or Melody series, are perfect for planting along walkways, in the front of a flower border or in pots next to the patio. The compact flowers support full-size plants for a radiant display. Dahlias dazzle with their unique flower shapes and sizes. The brilliant color and rolled petals of the cactus dahlia Karma Red Corona add a touch of the exotic to any garden. Consider the powder puff blooms of Myrtles Folly, with petals that capture the colors of a sunrise. Dinnerplate dahlias, like the deep purple Thomas Edison, grow 4 feet tall and have enormous 8-inch flowers. Plant taller varieties in the middle of the flower border and boost their ornamental appeal by including varieties like Fascination and HS Flame with burgundy foliage. The dark leaves combine nicely with the greens of their neighbors and serve as the perfect backdrop for the rose pink and bright red blossoms. Don’t be afraid to cut your dahlias, as picking encourages more blooming. With as few as three to six plants, you’ll have plenty of flowers to enjoy and share. Since dahlias thrive in the same soil as vegetables, consider adding a few plants to your food garden. You’ll be able to cut fresh flowers for the dinner table when harvesting vegetables for your next meal. Dahlias are not winter-hardy, so the tubers can be dug and stored indoors during the cold months, or you can treat them like other annuals. With so many wonderful varieties to choose from, it’s fun to try different ones each year. Review your garden plans to identify places that could benefit from a burst of late-season color. Order your dahlias early for the best selection, plant them in the spring and enjoy a spectacular show!
Don’t be afraid to cut your dahlias, as picking encourages more blooming. Melinda Myers has more than 30 years of horticulture experience and has written over 20 gardening books, including Small Space Gardening.

Bringing the World to Kalamazoo Colleagues International By Erica Shier
W
ith the advent of social media and internet news, people have access to knowledge about the workings of the world more than ever before and yet ignorance and fear seem to be growing daily. This is because true compassion and tolerance are born in the heart, not the head. As Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently stated, “If we are to have peace on earth…our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective”. Colleagues International has been working to bring a world perspective to the Kalamazoo area since its inception in 1971. The group defines itself as “a volunteer-based citizen diplomacy organization that has been enriching the Kalamazoo community with global diversity one relationship at a time”. It offers programs that connect emerging (and established) leaders from other nations around the world with the professionals and businesses that help make the West Michigan community such a dynamic place to live and work. Participants sometimes stay with local host families for the duration of their stay, allowing them to experience life in West Michigan on a deeper, more intimate level. Others stay in hotels and are offered hospitality at dinners hosted by local volunteers. No matter the details of each participant’s stay, the focus is always on developing relationships and engendering greater cultural understanding between the guests and residents of the Kalamazoo area. Colleagues International is a member of Global Ties U.S., a network that coordinates many of these exchange programs. Global Ties, which has 90 member organizations in 44 states, implements the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). The IVLP is the State Department’s primary professional exchange program. This program oversees up to 5,000 visiting international professionals each year and helps find the emerging leaders a good fit for experiencing the United States and what its communities have to offer. In 2016, through IVLP and other programs, Colleagues hosted 21 different international groups, consisting of 136
34

guests from 41 different countries. They brought to Kalamazoo a group of six from Costa Rica who came to learn about human trafficking, six from Russia focusing on the environment and eight from Saudi Arabia to have an interfaith dialogue about diversity and religion. Colleagues International will host a group from Russia in March to study women and social entrepreneurship and in April a group of youth development workers from Brazil will come to exchange with leaders in Kalamazoo. The topics, nations represented and content of the visits all vary but the goals of citizen diplomacy and enrichment through relationships never do. Jodi Hope Michaels is the Executive Director at Colleagues International and is responsible for bringing groups from all over the world into the Kalamazoo area for professional meetings, job shadowing, seminars and training programs (among others). By utilizing a database of upcoming IVLP groups looking for communities in which to experience U.S. culture and learn from the best and brightest leaders that our country has to offer, Michaels identifies groups that she knows would be a good fit for the West Michigan area. She then sets out to convince program officers in D.C. that Kalamazoo really is the best place to host the group in question. Her job is made easier by the fact that Kalamazoo is an ideal location for international leaders to come and learn about the best ways to change and grow their own communities. “Kalamazoo,” she notes “is one of the top small cities in the U.S.” Kalamazoo is blessed with a diverse economic base and is home to a number of thriving, large corporations such as Stryker. Kalamazoo is a great example of a city that has been successfully reinventing itself for years. A diverse community that is not afraid to meet challenges head-on, Kalamazoo is home to a vibrant non-profit sector, a thriving academic community and growing bio-tech and tech industries. “The Kalamazoo Promise”, which puts a college education within reach for all Kalamazoo Public School students, serves as a model for other communities to study. Michaels notes that Kalamazoo is also deeply committed to issues of social justice and values supporting
local, small businesses. There is a thriving farm-to-table restaurant scene and a nationally recognized farmer’s market. It’s a community that values a variety of perspectives and continually works to meet the needs of all its community members. It has a track record of leaders from all different sectors of the economy coming together to share best practices and look for ways to address the issues facing the community. Kalamazoo really does have a little bit of everything at every level, making it a perfect place to encourage, train and develop relationships with international leaders. Colleagues International is completely dependent on its volunteers for every aspect of its mission. As Executive
Director, Jodi Hope Michaels is the only paid staff member. Every other person on the team, from the Board of Directors to interns to business hosts, volunteers his or her time and talents to the effort. Currently, the organization draws from 200 professional hosts and 100 home hospitality families. Michaels says they are always looking for more volunteers and notes that serving in any capacity with Colleagues International will deepen volunteers’ knowledge of and appreciation for others cultures. It really is a program that benefits not only those directly involved, but ultimately the communities and countries in which participants live and work. If you are interested in becoming involved with Colleagues International, please visit their website at www.cikzoo.org or call (269)341-9494.

Everyone has days when nothing seems to go according to plan. In Today Will Be Different, Eleanor Flood has her whole day prepared, but her family has different ideas. The result is a hilarious and touching story about one whirlwind day in the life of a family.
This is the incredible and widely unknown story of nine rowers from the University of Washington who became national heroes at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Brown takes readers on an inspirational journey as the rowers struggle against the odds and learn to work as a team. The story culminates in a nail-biting climax as they race against Germany and Italy while the whole world watches.
Michigan author Richard Hill was never told that he was adopted. On his father’s deathbed, it is revealed to him that the origins of his birth are much different than what he thought them to be. Hill embarks on a 30-year journey to find his biological family, encountering sealed records, dead ends and shocking secrets. This remarkable true story is an inspiring page-turner of one man’s determined hunt for the truth.
Inara discovers an elaborately stitched piece of fabric among her deceased aunt’s belongings. As she begins uncovering the stories in the fabric, Inara comes to know Mei Lein, a young Chinese girl who lived a century before and whose secrets have a profound impact on Inara’s entire family.
Beth Green has been a part of the Kent District Library team for 15 years. One of her favorite duties as a librarian is helping patrons discover new books through Reader’s Advisory.
