Welcome to the world's best city Copenhageners really like their city but they are not the only ones. The international lifestyle magazine, Monocle, elected Copenhagen as the world's best city last year because it is simply "designed for life". Among other things, the magazine pointed out the great variation of the metropolis, the many bicycles in the streets, the well-functioning transport system and not least, the green profile to the delight of both residents and visitors. The ecology aspect is what is focused on in the development of the city. Parks, harbour baths and other oases as well as initiatives to create a better environment and a healthier city for everyone contribute to making the city an eco-metropolis. This is also the focal point of the magazine you are reading right now. Children also have a special place in the magazine. We show the most fun entertainment and museums for kids as well as provide other tips for wonderful holiday experiences for the whole family in Denmark's capital and in North Zealand. Copenhagen is a small city with everything the heart desires. The distances are short between very different experiences for visitors: Get sand between your toes and enjoy the sun whilst the kids play on the water's edge. Shop your way through many inspiring shops, enjoy delicious food and party with your friends until the small hours at a cool cocktail bar. Exercise those brain cells with magnificent architecture and art experiences; wander through buildings filled with centuries of exciting history and royal tones. Regardless of your starting point - and whether you are travelling alone, with family or friends - you will find what you need in this magazine about the city's pulsating diversity and North Zealand's palette of holiday experiences. Here is inspiration for everyone with guides to the hundreds of offers available in precisely those parts of the region that are perfect for you.

ECO-METROPOLIS
Use a bike in the world's greenest capital city Copenhagen is one of the world's greenest cities and host for the UN's climate summit meeting, COP 15, in the autumn. For the Copenhagen politicians, the case is clear: the city must be the world's leading environmental capital city with less CO2 emission, less polluted air and less noise, more green oases, more organic food and even more bikes.

ECO-METROPOLIS
{
}
Did you k n o w … that every day Copen-
hageners travel 660,000 kilometres in the metro but cycle 1.2 million kilometres almost double the amount.
I
n New York, the new bicycle lanes are called Copenhagen lanes and when politicians in Melbourne, Australia explain their wild bicycle visions, they talk about "Copenhagenizing" their city. The international connection between Copenhagen and cycling is entirely appropriate because in the Copenhagen morning rush-hour, the minister, the doctor and the director with his briefcase, cycle side by side with the carpenter, the musician and the family father with the kids in front on the carrier bicycle. Copenhagen has 307 kilometres of cycling lanes and is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. But the city's top politicians want to do even more. They want to make the city into the world's green environment metropolis, explains Copenhagen City's Technics and Environment Mayor, Klaus Bondam. "We want to show the world a model of how you can organise a city in another way with fewer cars, more pedestrians and more bicycles. And we also want to be a global role model when it comes to living ecologically. We believe that quality of life becomes higher when you're not constantly moving about in noise and inhaling air that's far too polluted. And when you can cycle and walk safely and always have a green area or water nearby," says Klaus Bondam. He is not worried that the city's vibe will disappear with all the green initiatives. ”I cannot see how making more bicycle lanes and planting more green trees has anything to do with whether there is a city vibe. The one does not exclude the other. To me, Copenhagen's city vibe is precisely the fact that there are many people on the streets, that everyone cycles all year round and that you can take a dip in the middle of the harbour because the water is so clean," he explains.
Everyone out there agrees on that point. Last year, the trend-setting, international magazine, Monocle, elected Copenhagen as the world's best city to live in - ahead of cities like Stockholm, Paris and Tokyo. The cities were judged on many different parameters such as the healthcare system, cost of living, architecture and design. Monocle's editor-in chief, Tyler Brûlé, is especially inspired by the city's green areas, the clean harbour baths and the many beautiful, cycling Copenhageners, who are also environmentally aware and good at recycling their waste. Ecology, recycling and less CO2 At Copenhagen City Hall, a number of ambitious and quite concrete goals have been set for how Copenhagen will become the world's eco-metropolis number one before 2015. For example, the CO2emission will be reduced by 20 percent, every fifth product in Copenhageners' shopping baskets must be organic and the air must be cleaner and no Copenhagener should have more than 15 minutes' walk to green areas or water. The municipality will be investing one billion Kroner over a four-year period in the green eco-metropolis visions. The money will be spent on everything from new bicycle lanes, renovation and expansion of parks and playgrounds to energy renovation of the municipality's buildings. In addition to the municipal funds, there is also a need for input from the individual Copenhagener to reach the goals. ”People are good at cycling, sorting waste and buying organic - actually, 14 percent of grocery shopping in Copenhagen is organic and that is something resembling a world record," explains Technics and Environment Mayor, Klaus Bondam.
visitcopenhagen.com 11
ECO-METROPOLIS
On the bicycle area, the overall goal is that at least 50 percent of the people - compared to 36 percent today will cycle to work or place of education in Copenhagen in 2015. Moreover, the number of seriously injured cyclists will be halved and at least 80 percent of the Copenhagen cyclists will feel safe in traffic. ”If we are to get people to cycle, they must feel safe. Therefore, we are expanding with even more bicycle lanes. We are also working on renovating more of the large traffic light junctions so we avoid those awful rightturn accidents. Safety in traffic is important when getting children to cycle. And we know that young cyclists become permanent cyclists," says Klaus Bondam.
When he speaks to his colleagues in the various European cyclist federations, he also finds that Copenhagen is on the forefront. ”Copenhagen actually has star status out there, it's not just something the politicians dream about. When my European colleagues are to explain about various bicycle initiatives in their countries, they often begin their sentences with 'Well, we're not Copenhagen, but ...' So there is no doubt that the Copenhagen bicycle culture represents something quite special. They also notice that Copenhagen does not just rest on its laurels, but constantly tries to improve the conditions for cyclists," explains Jens Loft Rasmussen. He believes that the bicycle culture suits the Danish lifestyle well because the bicycle is an individual, flexible and sociable mode of transport. You can decide for yourself where you start and end and where you'll stop along the way. And the bicycle gathers people across ages, professions, religions and lifestyles. ”If you read profile interviews with Danish business people, they almost always say that they cycle. This is a way to signal that you are down to earth and physically active," explains Jens Loft Rasmussen. Read more at www.kk.dk/miljoemetropolen
Copenhagen has star status out there Cycling is a core area of focus and in recent years, the capital's politicians have made extensive investments in bicycle lanes. For instance, a bicycle lane has been constructed along the lakes, a bicycle bridge, Åbuen, has been built across Denmark's busiest road, Ågade, and another bicycle bridge over the harbour fairway to Islands Brygge has been built. Last year, The Danish Cyclists' Federation elected Copenhagen as the Bicycle City of the Year and director, Jens Loft Rasmussen finds it difficult to stop smiling about this. ”Copenhagen takes cyclists seriously and the politicians show leadership. Both the Lord Mayor and the Technics and Environment Mayor are at the head and cycle themselves. They fight some tough battles politically because it is not always equally popular to, for example, make large streets car-free zones," says Jens Loft Rasmussen.
12 visitcopenhagen.com
On the way towards an even greener capital city Copenhagen's Technics and Environment Mayor, Klaus Bondam, dreams of making the city even greener by introducing congestion levies so motorists - like in many other cities - have to pay to drive to specific zones in the city. "In this way we can solve many of the noise, congestion and air pollution problems. We would also like some stricter environment zones so old diesel trucks and vans without particulate filters would be prohibited in parts of the city," explains Klaus Bondam, who also has plans to establish even more small parks, harbour baths and green cycling routes.
Biking-Copenhagen in figures Copenhageners between the ages of 10 and 84 cycle on average three kilometres per day on the streets of the capital city. In comparison, people in Aalborg in North Jutland cycle only 1.2 kilometres per day. There are 307 kilometres of cycle lanes in Copenhagen. 43 kilometres of them are eco-cycle lanes. More than a third of all Copenhageners cycle to work or place of education every day. Sources: DTU Transport, The Danish Cyclists' Federation and City of Copenhagen.

Did you know … that Amager is a Mecca for cyclists? Take a bike ride in Amager
Strandpark or in Vestamager Naturcenter.
Eco-route Østerbro-Valby Distance: approx. 10 km. The route: Take the path right by the pedestrian tunnel across from Ryparken Station in Østerbro. The path begins here in the northern end of the city and winds from Østerbro in the north through Nørrebro and Frederiksberg and ends in Valby in the western part of Copenhagen. Experienced cyclists can cover the route in almost half an hour. Along the way: The route goes through almost all the districts of the city and as a cyclist, you pass many green oases along the way. In Nørrebro, you can cycle through Nørrebro park and several places with a recently landscaped range of hills in the middle of the pulsating city. In Frederiksberg, the path goes across the heavily trafficked Ågade with a spectacular bicycle and pedestrian bridge called Åbroen. In Frederiksberg, the city atmosphere is spiced by the view of dairy cows on a small field by the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Copenhagen. Along the lakes from Østerbro - Frederiksberg Distance: 3 km. The route: Take the lake bicycle path at the end of Skt. Jørgens Sø by Gl. Kongevej – on the lakeshore opposite to the Planetarium. Follow the route along Svineryggen
14 visitcopenhagen.com
in Frederiksberg, cross over Danasvej, continue further along the lake and cross over Gyldenløvesgade. You will now be on Peblingedossering along Peblingesø. The rest of the route goes straight on along Sortedamsø and Sortedam Dossering and ends in Østerbrogade. There is a bicycle tunnel on the last part of the stretch under Dronning Louises Bro and Fredensbro.

Did you know … that the City of Copenhagen has issued a special bicycle map where all cycle paths and cycle lanes are in-
cluded? The map is available from various bicycle dealers and from the municipality.
Along the way: This cycle path is brand new. Only last year was it possible to cycle along the lakes, which was otherwise reserved for pedestrians and not least, runners. The cycle path begins slightly above street level by Gl. Kongevej, so cyclists need to go up a couple of stairs. When you begin cycling on the path, it is just straight on from there with the water on your right side and some of Copenhagen's most exclusive addresses on your left. The Lord Mayor's favourite: Nørrebro's Runddel (Circus) - Nørregade Distance: 2.5 km. The route: Begin at Nørrebro's Runddel and take the route through Assistens Cemetery and further on down Nørrebrogade. Cycle over Dronning Louises Bro, down Frederiksborggade and all the way into the centre of town along Nørregade. Technics and Environment Mayor, Klaus Bondam's route: It's fantastic that you can cycle through a cemetery. Assistens Cemetery is well worth a visit. It is a green oasis, which people use - with respect. This is where H.C. Andersen and all the Copenhagen pioneers are buried and the cemetery still functions as a cemetery. When you cross Dronning Louises Bro and look out across the lakes,
you will experience the Copenhagen that Copenhageners know. It's a city that is so much more than the Little Mermaid and Amalienborg Slotsplads. The bicycle lobbyist's favourite: Holmen - Israels Plads Distance: 4 km. The route: From Holmen down along Prinsessegade to Torvegade and further over Knippelsbro. After that, along Gammel Strand and Nørregade to Israels Plads where I work. Chairman for the Danish Cyclists' Federation, Jens Loft Rasmussen, explains his route: When you get to the top of Knippelsbro you have a fantastic and beautiful view of the city. For example, you can see the towers from Nikolaj Church, Christiansborg and the Stock Exchange. The route goes through the inner city past the cathedral in Nørregade and ends at one of Copenhagen's most popular squares, which houses the labour movement, the missionary movement and the bicycle movement.

Hundested-Helsingør – the north coast path Distance in total: Approx. 70 km. - but take a break wherever you want. The route: Begin in Hundested and cycle towards the east through Kikhavn, Liseleje, Asserbo Plantage, Tisvilde Hegn, Heatherhill, Rågeleje, Udsholt Strand, Smidstrup, Gilleleje, Munkerup, Dronningmølle, Hornbæk, Ålsgårde, Hellebæk and end in Helsingør. Along the way: The route goes through some of the most beautiful scenery in North Zealand - up and down through forests, along cliffs and with panoramic views across the sea. For example, make a stop at Knud Rasmussen's Museum in the old Spodsbjerg Lighthouse, experience the village, Kikhavn, with farms all the way down to the beach, enjoy Asserbo Plantage, take a rest in the heather-covered hills in Heatherhill or enjoy the view from Gilleleje's two lighthouses by Nakkehoved. The route also goes past some of North Zealand's best beaches - try taking a dip from the one in Hornbæk.

Afarroyal home from the noise With its green fields, rolling hills, large forests and white beaches, North Zealand is an incredibly popular area to settle down when you have a family. great number of the most wealthy citizens of the kingdom live in North Zealand. Every morning they take the trip by bus, train, bicycle or car from the green, undulating landscape and into Copenhagen where they work. One of the families where both mum and dad are busy, live in Fredensborg and they don't have a surname. This family is HRH Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his wife, HRH Crown Princess Mary. Fredensborg Palace Palace gardens open in the summer Fredensborg Palace is located by Esrum Sø and for many years it has been one of the homes HRH Queen Margrethe the Second and her husband, HRH Prince Henrik have used most often, especially in the summer. Since 2004, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess have also had their residence in the Chancellery House, which is located next to the main building. The beautiful 18th century Baroque palace is also often the place where the Queen invites to larger official state visits and family events in the royal family. The Baroque palace is part of a widely spread construction and was - typical of the period - intended as an architectonic whole with the surrounding garden. The long, straight avenues, which spread out from the palace in a star form, is a feature from the garden's original French Baroque style. The avenues were re-created between the 1970s and 1990s as a Danish example of the pompous style, which is especially known from the French kings' palace, Versailles, near Paris. In between the avenues there are large sections of forest with winding paths from the end of the 18th century where basically all baroque gardens had to be converted to a romantic style. A particular attraction in the garden is the baroque gardens, Nordmandsdalen, with approx. 70 sculptures of Norwegian and Faroese farmers and fish-

The Fredensborg Houses Visit also the Fredensborg Houses, which are located in Fredensborg in North Zealand. They are designed by the world-famous Danish architect, Jørn Utzon Â(1918-2008). This is a new form of standard house, which is built in close interplay with nature so they do not mar, but on the contrary, make the area more interesting. Utzon has created the Fredensborg Houses with Roman atrium courtyards as inspiration. The houses are occupied by private people and can only be seen from the outside. Countess Danner was married in the castle chapel North Zealand has been popular with the Danish royal family through centuries. Frederiksborg Castle in the larger commercial town, Hillerød, close to Fredensborg was built by Christian IV between 1600-1620 and for many years the Danish kings were crowned in the castle church. The castle church is also incredibly sought after today for weddings and christenings. And by far the majority of the princely weddings that have taken place in Denmark can be found in the Court and Castle Congregation's parish register. Frederik VII, who is most known for giving Denmark the constitution that laid the foundation for democracy, was married three times. The last time was to the former dancer, Louise Rasmussen, subsequently called Countess Danner. The couple were married in Frederiksborg Castle church and here you can read, in black and white, that

this was a "left-handed" marriage and that any children would not be entitled to inherit and that Countess Danner would not have the title of queen. The marriage is registered in the ordinary chronological order amongst the many other couples who got married in August 1850: a carpenter, a secondary school teacher, employees of the stud farm, a farmhand, a manservant and a groom. Today, Frederiksborg Castle houses the Museum of Natural History with portraits, historical paintings and modern art, which together provide a picture of Denmark's history and its most important figures. The castle is also surrounded by a beautiful baroque garden.

quick facts about the Royal Danish Life Guards
Amalienborg is mostly in focus when the royal family are on the balcony, or the Prime Minister presents the government, but the Royal Danish Life Guards stand on guard throughout the year. In contrast to many other countries with monarchies, the royal guards have the responsibility without the help of the police and therefore, they have live ammunition in their rifles. by Henrik Nordskilde
1
Generally, it is picturesque and peaceful for the guardsmen to stand guard at Amalienborg Palace. The most dramatic event can be an intoxicated night-owl or other lost people who ask for directions. However, this does not mean that the guardsmen are there just for decoration. In many other countries where a royal family has to be protected, the guardsmen get help from the police, but in Denmark, it is the guardsmen's task to intervene with hostile persons and therefore the guardsmen can as in extreme situations, shoot with live ammunition.

A guardsman must be minimum 175 cm tall. Before they begin the guard training at the guards' barracks, they are lined up. The tallest third of them will be the 1st guard squad, the middle third will be the 2nd guard squad and the shortest third will be the 3rd guard squad. You can see the difference between the guard squads by looking at their sabre tassles. Red means 1st guard squad, white means 2nd guard squad and a blue sabre tassle means 3rd guard squad.

A guardsman is at Amalienborg 24-hours at a time. There are two shifts of two hours and they then stay in the guards' room for four hours where they eat and relax before the next shift. At midday, the change of the guards is especially interesting to follow. The guardsmen at Amalienborg are relieved by a new squad that marches from the barracks at Rosenborg Palace at approximately 11.30.
It's a myth that the guards are not allowed to speak when they are on duty, but guests must not expect a cosy chat with the conscripts. The guards are instructed to respond briefly and precisely to enquiries and if this is impossible, the enquirer will be referred to the sergeant's guard room.
A guard squad comprises approx. 80 conscripted guardsmen and approx. seven sergeants who follow the guardsmen on duty. The guardsmen are trained by a senior sergeant and a second in command sergeant on the duty squad.
The first female guards started their duties at Amalienborg Palace in 1999. Normally, there are up to four female guards on each deployment squad.

In terms of size, it is a smaller guard than the King's Guard, but the size depends on how many of the royals are living in the palaces. A Lieutenant's Guard is under the command of a captain or a first lieutenant and the guard parade marches from the Royal Life Guards' barracks at 11.30 a.m.
It's called the Palace Guard when none of the royal family are in the palace - the smallest guard at Amalienborg Palace. A Palace Guard is under the command of a sergeant and the guard squad march from the Royal Danish Life Guards' barracks at 11.32 a.m.
The King's Guard and the Lieutenant's Guard are accompanied by the Band of the Royal Danish Life Guards and on special occasions, e.g. the Queen's birthday, the guards wear the red gala uniform and carry gala colours with the Royal Coat of Arms.

I3 This is the classic photo opportunity of them all, to be photographed next to the bronze statue, which lures sailors when sailing into Copenhagen. Here, it is also possible to satisfy the most acute shopping needs in the many shops 'anchored' along Langelinie. Nearby is also the old fortress, Kastellet.Today, various divisions of the military have offices in the buildings, whilst the rampart is the setting for Copenhageners' romantic walks and breathless runs. Read more about the Kastellet in Buildings of Power on page 40. Also make a point of seeing the Gefion fountain, named after the goddess who ploughed up a piece of ground out of Sweden and in so doing, created Zealand.
Strøget
G5 The majority of tourists take the walk all the way down the famous Pedestrian street. Close to the City Hall, Strøget is characterised by fast-food restaurants, pubs and clothing shops in a lower price range than down at the Beverly Hills end towards Kongens Nytorv. Here, the facades are taken over by Gucci, Louis Vuitton and other fashionable brands. No matter how much is in your wallet, remember the detours away from the lively street. The streets north of Strøget house the Latino quarter or 'Pisserenden', as it is less poetically called. To the south is the parallel street, Strædet (Kompagnistræde, Læderstræde) where the café life and shops are less mainstream than on Strøget. Here you can find odd shops like 'Books and Curiosities' or 'Eskimo Art Gallery' with objects from the Inuit culture. You should also visit Nikolaj Church on Nikolaj Plads. Right behind the large building, you can often see exhibitions at the School of Architecture. Or make your way past the Gunboat Sheds on Holmen. In the 1800s, 48 sheds were built to store the navy's small gunboats, which were put into use after the English had stolen the Danish navy vessels. Today, the charming old buildings of the area accommodate businesses, homes and educational institutions. The warship, Peder Skram, is also anchored at Holmen and you can go on board.
F5 10 minutes' walk from all the sights in Copenhagen is Kødbyen (the Meatpacking District of Copenhagen). Despite the industrial name the area has a great deal of other things to offer besides wholesaler outlets where the word "bacon fat" is part of the name. Galleries, bars and eateries have opened in the area, so there are cultural and culinary delights on offer most of the day. Buildings of Power Hundreds of years of struggle for power in Denmark can be read in Copenhagen's historical buildings. A tour from the fort to City Hall will quickly show that foreigners, Danish citizens, kings and nobility have battled about who should rule Denmark. The traces are still there. by Stine Carsten Kendal
T
h e journey through Denmark's history goes through the streets of Copenhagen. For more than 600 years the Danish capital city has, first and foremost, been home to the royal family, the government and the nation's naval fleet - and the buildings that were to help the power brokers to keep the sceptre in their hands are still standing. Side by side with the buildings of democracy, this shows that the balance of power today is something quite different. Until the fall, in the middle of the 1800s of Copenhagen's
34 visitcopenhagen.com
most outstanding defence construction, the ramparts around the city, all the buildings were concentrated in the city centre. Outside of the ramparts were only houses that could be easily burned down if enemies entered the country. Therefore, today you can see the majority of the buildings that have played a part in Denmark's history. The centre of the power is squeezed together When History Tours take tourists around on foot in Copenhagen, the buildings are the starting points for stories
HISTORY
about Denmark's history. The tours in Copenhagen begin at Højbro Plads - right across from the centre of power, Slotsholmen in the middle of Copenhagen. Slotsholmen tells both the oldest story and the more recent democracy story," says historian and tour guide, Christian Holm Donatzky. At Slotsholmen is the palace, Christiansborg, which rests on the remains of the fortresses and castles that were located on the same spot through more than 800 years. Today, the Danish parliament, the Folketing, fills most of the building but the Prime Minister's Office, The High Court and the royal family's representative offices are also to be found here. Bunched together around the palace are a number of buildings that house the most important ministries. The current powers that be - ministers and government officials - have gradually taken over the offices in the majority of the buildings. Even those that were previously used as living quarters. Rather than than move from Slotsholmen, which is an island connected to the city with eight bridges. In addition to Christiansborg and the ministries; The Royal Library, Slotskirken, Thorvaldsens Museum and the Stock Exchange are also on Slotsholmen. The royal family moved around In certain periods, Christiansborg housed the royal family but dissatisfaction with the layout of the palace
and several fires meant that it was far from a permanent residence. When the palace burned down in 1794, Christian VII and his family did not have a roof over their heads and moved temporarily into three of Amalienborg Palace's four palaces, originally built for noble families. The royal family has since acquired the last palace and lives in these buildings today, which are far from an imposing palace, but rather more like a row of large villas. The interplay between the square and the buildings makes Amalienborg Palace Copenhagen's finest rococo example - and there is free access to walk across the square and look at all the details. Traditionally, the royal family has been open to the rest of society and to a certain degree, the buildings express this openness. Today, Christiansborg houses the royal family's stables, riding grounds, church, theatre and representation facilities which are also open to visitors. With all this, there is not much room at Amalienborg. One of the castles that has been very popular as a residence is the fairytale palace, Rosenborg, which was built as King Christian IV's hunting palace outside of the city walls. Today, the castle is situated in the centre with the beautiful gardens, Kongens Have around it. In the Long Hall or Knights' Hall, you can see the famous Rosenborg tapestries, which show Christian IV's victories in the Scanian War and the crown jewels are also exhibited at the castle.

Castles and financial ruin But Christian IV was so occupied with the details of his buildings that his overview disappeared. Among other things, this is why one of Copenhagen's most popular kings ended up destroying Denmark's powerful European position at that time. ”He took over a well-functioning kingdom and left a political and financial ruin,” says historian, Steffen Heiberg, who has written several books about Christian IV. According to him, the king was driven by the same craving for power as the majority of past kings - that is, to expand the country's borders. This required a large army and Christian rearmed heavily to, for example, resist Sweden which at that time was a threat to Denmark. The building up of the navy and the many trade activities that followed the military initiatives gave impetus to the economy. So

there was money to modernise the capital city, the status and extent of which at the beginning of the 1600s was only slightly higher and larger than a couple of Zealand's medium-sized towns. The Swedes are coming The power struggle between Danish and Swedish kings was crucial to Copenhagen's fortifications. When Christian IV's son, Frederik III, had initially been barricaded inside Copenhagen by the Swedes once, he hurried to build the fortress, Kastellet, which is one of Northern Europe's finest and best-kept fortifications. ”Kastellet stands almost exactly as Frederik III built it and here I can tell you the story about the wars with the Swedes. And it is just simply so beautiful out there," says Christian Donatzky. He encourages all of us who will

anyway be out looking at the Little Mermaid, to take a walk in to Kastellet. The military still has living quarters and residences in the old soldier town, which in its most populated period accommodated 1800 people. Not far from there is Frederiksstaden, which was designed by the architect, Nicolai Eigtved (1701-1754). This is one of Europe's most beautiful rococo districts, which comprises two main axes connected together by the palace, Amalienborg. All power to the people The tour around the power of more recent times goes from Christiansborg across Gammeltorv where Copenhagen's District Court is located today in the former Town Hall and Courthouse. The classical building is not a building you feel comfortable in and you're not supposed to. If you walk around the corner from Nytorv, the uneasy feeling continues in Slutterigade (this means executioner street) where the old jailhouse is located. Here you will find some of the most dramatic examples of Danish architecture. For example, notice the decorations on the windows with the heavy, serious eaves as well as the small windows with bars that were to frighten citizens with their bleakness. The Courthouse was built by the general master builder, C.F. Hansen (1756-1845), who has also made his mark on many other places in Copenhagen and for example, was behind the cathedral Vor Frue Kirke and Christiansborg Slotskirke. Those who decide on the fate of Copenhagen sit in the City Hall and today, are elected by the people. The building is a summary of many different styles; the national romantic inspired by historicism, the Italian Middle Ages

and with decorations inspired by Denmark's history as a seafaring nation. The City Hall with the many different details stood complete in 1905 and since then various Lord Mayors, Mayors and members of the citizen representation have struggled for power over Copenhageners' daily life behind the walls.

Traditionally rich porcelain in a modern guise An entire new tableware collection from Royal Copenhagen with the famous figures and cups borrow from the treasure chest of the past of design details and challenges the proud traditions. by Tage Majland
L
Louise Campbell has made it her trademark to challenge the prevailing norms when she creates lamps for Louis Poulsen, modern Danish furniture design for, e.g. Hay and glass for traditional Holmegaard - and yet her work always ends with a result that lasts. But there was nevertheless a certain amount of nervousness when one of Denmark's leading designers began working on the first complete tableware collection of the 21st century for Royal Copenhagen, also known as The Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory. The Elements tableware collection is inspired by the very first Blue Flutedtableware collection from 1775, Flora Danica from 1790 and Half Lace from 1885. I take my hat off to the sense of the value of the workmanship and through that the detail and sense of beauty. Throughout the entire design process I have felt very, very privileged with this free pass to carry the tradition further," explains Louise Campbell, who was not however weighed down by the legacy, but introduced the first 15 parts in all of 15 different colours. "I couldn't design yet another blue tableware collection for Royal Copenhagen, even though management would like that. As they said: If you also insist on working with decoration, you may choose any colour - as long as it is Royal Copenhagen blue. Of course, this seemed like a red rag waved in the face of my devil-may-care attitude, but it was also the best kind of source of inspiration. It took me directly to the colour laboratory with my faithful esquire, Merete Faxe, who has worked with painting at Royal Copenhagen for forty years. Together we have moved mountains."

The process from idea to product took two years, which is actually an incredibly short time for such an extensive task. "The most difficult thing is to find the sustainable idea. The time up to the idea landing, entails sleepless nights, stomach ache and hot flushes. For this project, it was worse than normal. So much thinking and drawing went on that it physically hurt." "I was given a workplace at the model workshop and thus access to not just getting to know the impossible material, porcelain, but also access to the unique expertise of the modellers. They watched patiently while I made the one material blunder after the other. And they taught me in the best way, by letting me learn through my mistakes and then subsequently, gently explaining to me again and again what porcelain can and cannot do." The result is innovative and yet unmistakeably Royal Copenhagen. "We have tried to design a tableware collection that does not dictate. It must be just as suitable for the Japanese or American kitchen, as for the Danish." "Another extremely important factor is the regularity of the use of the tableware. Only the minority of us today have everyday tableware and a fine one for special occasions. In reality, many of us have a mixture of tableware. With the Elements collection it is my wish to break through some the barriers between festivity and everyday life. Thus, the tableware invites steak just as happily as sushi, oatmeal and soup; to the large table setting with oysters on the plate, to the TV dinner on the sofa with spaghetti and meatballs," explains Louise Campbell and adds subtly: "I practise the latter myself. And I am pleased every time I look down on my plate and think that an evening on my own in front of the TV with my feet up and no worries in my head is also a kind of festivity that is worth celebrating with hand-painted porcelain."

Royal porcelain for 234 years Royal Copenhagen - also known as The Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory - was founded in Copenhagen in 1775 under the protection of the Queen - Juliane Marie. The first Blue Fluted tableware is still produced successfully, just as the company is known for its porcelain figurines of, e.g. children and animals.

T
ivoli opened in 1843 and Georg Carstensen's garden will never be finished, but will continue to undergo a careful transformation. However, it is still forbidden to use plastic and neon lights in the decoration - Poul Henningsen called neon "sunshine in tubes". Poul Henningsen has also a very special role in the development of Tivoli in the middle of the last century. He was hired as the chief architect in order to introduce something modern to the old garden, among other things, a new garden plan and a spectacular, mechanical mussel shell as a stage. PH's lamps are still an important part of Tivoli's style. They are designed to spread sufficient light without dazzling. In 1941, the lamps were crucial to the garden's survival as there were blackouts during the war. Poul Henningsen developed a special lamp that spread the light horizontally out between the slats and in so doing, the lights couldn't be seen by planes at night. The special spinning lights were created by PH for Tivoli in 1949, but it was only last year that they really began to spin around as intended. The electric motor in the original lamps were not stable and powerful enough and constantly burned out. But now 101 lamps have new motors from Louis Poulsen so the guests can have the full experience of a rotating spiral lampshade that turns opposite to the red spiral on the internal acrylic pipe around the bulb. The effect is discreet because "too much effect will give the sensation of a full moon" as Poul Henningsen explained.

Multi-artist with the light switched on Poul Henningsen (1894-1967) began his professional life as an art critic and before long became one of the 20th century's most distinctive Danish society critics. He wrote books, revue songs and wrote for newspapers parallel to a career as architect of both buildings and lamps and had particularly great success with his lamps for the company, Louis Poulsen. The PH lamps became classics with their own aesthetics and a perfectly calculated and comfortable light. Some of the models are still in production and are sold world-wide.

Copenhagen's new playhouse is a successful architectonic meeting between a Viking and a sophisticated lady in high heels. The playhouse is nonchalantly placed out across the harbour entrance with a down-to-earth oak promenade and floating glass partitions. by Signe Eriksen Tonsberg and Lars Højholt

he broad-shouldered oak planks give a little under the soles of your shoes, the water in the harbour glistens and the city's noisy pulse is gone. It can be this poetic and meditative to be on the promenade deck in front of Copenhagen's new Playhouse on a very ordinary Thursday morning. Tourists explore and the native Copenhageners on the way to work walk past on the 150-metre long, slightly sloping promenade that runs out across the harbour entrance in front of the Playhouse. There is something both accessible and safe, but also something compelling, stately and very urban about the new Playhouse. The Playhouse is located at the end of Nyhavn with views from the foyer and promenade across the Inner Harbour to the rustic warehouses, the Opera House and Oresund - way out there. Because the Playhouse is "there where Frederiksstaden meets the seven seas," as architect, Lene Tranberg, from the practice, Lundgaard & Tranberg who are behind the design of the building expresses it.
The Playhouse's café and restaurant The Café and restaurant Ofelia, which is named after Hamlet's love, are located in the Playhouse's foyer. The restaurant is open to everyone - not just the theatre's guests. Students sit here with café latte and laptops side by side expectant theatre enthusiasts and enjoy Copenhagen's best view across the harbour front and Oresund. The menu includes everything from coffee and brunch to three-course meals with wine. Ofelia is open from 10 a.m. to after curtain call of the final performance in the evening. Thus, evening cocktails and something as rare as midnight snacks are available. And there are free Internet hotspots in the whole foyer.

ARCHITECTURE
The Playhouse is at the edge of Copenhagen's old Frederiksstad, which was constructed at the end of the 1700s with Amalienborg and the Marble Church as the focal points. "Frederiksstaden has its position strengthened in the meeting between the culture and the water. But we have allowed ourselves to give the Playhouse its own expression, which leans more towards the expression from a warehouse than Frederikstaden's rococo," architect, Lene Tranberg, explained. The Playhouse's robust warehouse expression has arisen, not least, thanks to the building's brown tile walls. But it's not brown, clinical tiles like the ones we remember from the 1970’s detached houses. To the contrary, the tiles are specially designed and developed for the Playhouse. They are baked in English clay and are courser, broader than and not as high as traditional brick. Many people point out that it is precisely the masonry and tiles that make the building so unique.

H4 950 seats in total The Playhouse is designed by the firm of architects, Lundgaard and Tranberg and has cost 900 million Kroner including the building site. It opened in November 2007 after three years of construction. The building is 20,000 sq.m. and has three stages: The Main Stage with 650 seats, the Port Stage with 200 seats and the Studio Stage with 100 seats. ARCHITECTURE
Spherical theatre The Playhouse is part of The Royal Theatre, which after many years of lack of space in the old buildings on Kongens Nytorv had now expanded with both the Opera House on Dokøen (Dock Island) and the Playhouse on Kvæsthusbroen. The Playhouse itself comprises four elements: • An outdoor, sloping promenade deck in oak timber. • The base of the building with three theatres and room for, in total, one thousand theatre goers. • An almost floating top storey which houses the administration and actors' dressing rooms. • And a 32-metre high copper-covered stage tower. The architect, Lene Tranberg, has called the Playhouse a "modern theatre machine" - a place that is created to give the play the best possible working conditions. For example, the heart of the house, the Main Stage, is fitted out with state-of-the-art acoustic equipment, so there is precisely one second's reverberation which suits acting perfectly. And this
thrills the actors who have also been involved in the creating process of the playhouse. The stage interior is spherical and among other things, inspired by Shakespeare's round theatres and the antique amphitheatres. The walls are clad with more of the building's characteristic dark-brown tiles, which give an almost cave-like atmosphere. The completed Playhouse became the darling of the connoisseurs' of architecture immediately. For example, architecture critics wrote: "An unseen use of tiles and coloured glass ensures that the theatre will be magical and the architecture will become art" and "the foyer is a masterpiece in all its spectacular simplicity". The Foreningen til Hovedstadens Forskønnelse (Federation for the Embellishment of the Capital) gave the Playhouse a diploma for the architectonic expression and the well-selected location. The Playhouse also received the Danske Lyspris (The Danish Lighting Award) and the Nordisk Lyspris (Nordic Lighting Award) 2008 for "original and brilliant lighting".

My favourite places 1) Port: I love this town and I love towns by the sea. I am crazy about water as an element, especially the sea. I grew up by the sea and with sailing, which I think is fantastic. And the presence of the sea gives the air and the light a very special quality, which I am fascinated by. 2) Museums: Copenhagen has all the museums that create our history and culture so I often visit them with our children and for my own sake. I love going to museums. This is how you can get a ticket If you're late, you can be fortunate to get tickets on the performance day at the Playhouse box office. The office opens one hour before the performance begins. Tickets to theatre, opera and ballet are also sold in The Royal Danish Theatre Box Office at Kongens Nytorv. 3) Architecture: There is everything here from late renaissance to the 19th century's Golden Age. And its all mixed with pure Danish modernism. I love the whole caboodle. I also love it when we also involve metaphors from our past. 4) Fairy tale town: I feel that almost anything is possible in this society. I can dream here. I can fantasise. Source: CNN

Water-ski and wakeboard Holmen is the sports hot spot in Copenhagen. Previously, Holmen was a closed military and industrial area but in recent years, many of the large areas have been converted into, for example, a mini Malibu with a sandy beach and a wakeboard and water skiing course where you are pulled around in and over the water by stretched wires at 30 kilometres per hour. Copenhagen Cable Park is the first of its kind in Denmark, for beginners and experienced people and the place is also used for the Danish Championships in wakeboard. Children are welcome to use the course, but this requires the signature of parents or guardians if they are under 18. The water depth of the entire course is between 0.8 and 1.5 metres and all users must therefore be able to swim at least 200 metres. It is possible to hire all necessary equipment on site. FOOD
Gourmet
at edible prices
With the starting point in good raw products, top chefs and other food artists have developed a new category of medium gourmet in the Copenhagen restaurant environment. The food is informal and at an affordable price. by Solveig Willum
A number of Copenhagen's top chefs have turned their backs on finer French cuisine and have focused on making good food that is affordable. One of the pioneers is Rasmus Oubæk, who has worked in several of the city's Michelin restaurants. In 2004, he opened his own restaurant in Store Kongensgade but despite a Michelin star the year after, Rasmus Oubæk chose to convert the restaurant into a lunch restaurant and brassiere with a somewhat more humble menu. Jens Vestergaard Jensen is in the same category and he was involved in opening Ensemble, which had two Michelin stars in 2005. Tired of truffles, Vestergaard serves today the best from the French country kitchen and the menu is reduced to a hand-written A4 sheet at Luns in Øster Farimagsgade.
Expensive star moments Michelin stars are falling onto Copenhagen restaurants and if you want to be sure you have a gourmet experience, you can stop by one of the eleven star places. So far, Noma is the only one with two stars.

Take-away does not need smell of deep fat If you're not in the mood for busy waiters and tablecloths, you can put your three-course meal under your arm and enjoy your créme bruleé at home or in a park nearby. And you can do this without compromising on quality because the food is made "to take away". At Gofood in Jægersborggade, the primarily organic menu is inspired by the food served to the staff at the posh restaurants - simple, but made of the same good raw products as the guests'. And they are ready to take home or to Assistens Cemetery - the green oasis in Nørrebro. If it all has to happen in the real outdoors, it is possible to order the perfect picnic basket from several places, e.g. with Italian desserts and wine from Il Senso just opposite Kongens Have.

NIGHT LIFE
The night is young Copenhagen is the city in Scandinavia that sleeps the least. Here, there are saucy chicks, lively guys and no excuse to be bored at nightfall. by Christian Boisen and Lars Højholt
Grill Bar
Cocktail bars
Pure cocktail bar H4 Topdollar can easily serve a cold beer, but otherwise it is a pure cocktail bar. Quite intentionally, the bar does not open before 9 p.m. and only on Fridays and Saturdays. The establishment's varying DJs ensure that music plays in the triangular room with the low tables and the moving and shaking bartenders. Topdollar Boltens Gård 8, the basement, Cph. K www.topd.dk
Steaks and drinks
H4 Grill Bar in the city's "mine field" is actually a café, restaurant and cocktail bar in one. F5 Nord Natklub is a discothèque, nightclub and cocktail bar all at once. There is room for 800 people to party, but no more than 500 are allowed in in one evening. What is decisively different in relation to Danish conditions, is Nord Natklub's age policy: You must be 30 years old or more, but that doesn't mean less partying. Nord Natklub Vesterbrogade 2E, Cph. V www.nordlounge.dk
The big mix
Like an English hotel bar G4 1105 is one of Copenhagen's latest cocktail bars. It is funky and elegant, but also cosy. You do not need to be on the guest list to get in and besides the bar counter, there are almost homely arm chairs and sofas in the cocktail bar, which is inspired by English hotel bars. The atmosphere is dynamic but controlled. 1105 Kristen Bernikowsgade 4, Cph. K www.1105.dk
Party for the adults
Nørrebro's newly decorated pride still holds the flag high after many years. And I quickly realise that in Tivoli I am still always a child. 4) Rågeleje. As a child, I went up there every summer and I still go there every summer as an adult. The water has a tone of blue that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. 5) Andy’s Bar. If you want to experience Copenhagen around 1950 - between 3 and 5 in the morning (and who doesn't!!??) then this authentic experience will surely be THE PLACE to enjoy a nostalgic drink.

FASHION
Miniature fashion has growing pains
Playing with the personal expression through innovative, stylish creations from Danish fashion houses is no longer reserved for adults. In recent years, more of the iconic design brands have worked on wonderful collections in children's sizes. by Birgitte Raben

Silk shirts as soft as rose petals fold becomingly around a female leg and the little girl sighs sweetly at each step. Clip, clap, the sound of high heels and stylish steps. Oh, if only I was a posh lady. Just like mum. In grovelling admiration of the adults' fashion, the majority of little girls have dreamt of replacing their dungarees with more sophisticated clothes that express personality. Unfortunately, mum's delicate dress is dragged and tripped over in the fancy stilettos along the floor if the daughter is allowed to try. But several Danish fashion houses, known from the catwalk, are now launching innovative collections so style conscious parents and their children can easily find high quality, wonderful materials and clean lines tailored into children's sizes. "Previously, the choice was between narrow or broad ribbed corduroy trousers or red or blue shoes. Now, there is much more to choose from. There is now prestige in designing children's fashion. Each collection has a look and characteristic so the children can be individual about their expression," says Ulla Skjødt, who is a trend consultant at the trade organisation, The Danish Federation of Textile and Clothing Industries.
Mini A Ture
Graphic attitude Just like Mini A Ture prioritises brands such as Small Wings by Vadumsrum and Holly's, that the clothing must both look good and last so it can be used. Even though
Fashion weeks for children's clothing Danish designer clothing for juniors has become so popular that the two annual fashion weeks in Copenhagen present full-on shows for children. there are some design characteristics that are repeated in both children's and adults' collections, they all place importance on the fact that there must be a clear difference. Children should not be over-decorated mini adults. Of course, there can be some humour in resembling a little adult with a tie on at Christmas, but at crechÊ they should not be mannequins. They must be able to use the clothing," believes Frederikke Hviid. Typically, Mini A Ture has a slightly naive print, which emphasises the childish approach but avoids being too silly. And at Small Wings the graphic patterns are dominant because children like that, believes designer,

Charlotte Vadum. She lets the raw and simple lines from the adult Vadum be repeated in the little skirts, jumpsuits and dresses. The designer sees a difference in that women would like to feel beautiful, whilst children want attitude. But for both mother and child, it's about expressing personal style through clothing.

Room for princess dreams The style icon, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark often sits on the first row at several of the spectacular shows when Copenhagen holds Fashion Week every spring and autumn. Whiite is just one of the brands Mary keeps an eye on and likes to wear. And the pleasure of good design makes its mark on the younger generation of the royal family. The little princes and princesses tumble around in outfits from Mini A Ture, which the designer behind Whiite, Frederikke Hviid, established together with her sister when they had babies themselves a few years ago. donna's children also tumble around in Mini A Ture. "As a designer, you can rarely find just what you want. So the solution is to make it yourself. We took nostalgic aspects from our own childhood, which was mixed with modern trends," explains Frederikke Hviid. The philosophy behind the Mini A Ture collections is to combine aesthetics with the functional. "Of course, some of the trends from the adult fashions are repeated in the clothing for the little ones,"explains Frederikke Hviid. But this is first and foremost clothing on children's terms with comfortable and soft materials, room to move and to get dirty in. And it must also tolerate washing. Again and again.

Cecilie Christensen Editor-in Chief, Elle Danmark
1) The Little Mermaid. Even though I am an urban dweller, my morning runs are a must and it has almost become a ritual to run past the mermaid and say good morning. 2) Kgs. Nytorv. Because the square reminds me that Copenhagen is a city in a mini format. The square is dominated by The Royal Danish Theatre's magnificence and the (fortunately) resurrected trees that comprise the "Krinsen" and which form a cosy frame around the winter's skating rink with its chains of lights. 3) The cafeteria on Esplanaden. The tiny turquoise town house
accommodates the most wonderful coffee bar, which leads your thoughts towards a 1950's milk bar ... I love shopping for colourful sweets from grandma's days and vacate the place in "Sex & the City" style with a latté to go in a pink paper cup. 4) Vor Frue Plads and Pisserenden. I enjoy being reminded of my student days at university and if I am nearby I don't mind making a detour just to get a whiff of the past. A fun detail is that the door handle is placed too high - just like in a creché - to ensure that the kids don't run off ...

Close to Halmtorvet a new art and night scene has appeared. In the Meat Packing District there are abattoirs and sausage cart cemeteries next to the city's latest art and night scene. The dishevelled look has become "in" and since Karriere opened their doors in 2007, several others have followed.
Restaurants & Cafés
Coffee bars in the city Starbucks has not conquered Copenhagen but, in the course of a decade, other chains and smaller entrepreneurs have ensured that the city has moved basically from zero coffee culture to a flourishing range of mocha from quality beans. The chain reaction was initiated by Baresso, which today sends its delicious scent of freshly brewed coffee from a large number of places, just as Riccos Kaffebar is one of the smaller initiatives that have gradually appeared. Some of the cafés, which roast and sell the beans themselves, have several world champion baristas.

Ice-cream bars in the city Danes eat more than 50 million litres of ice-cream per year and it has become trendy to buy luxury ice-cream instead of the cheap stuff from the supermarket. Thus, new ice-cream bars are opening up all the time where the content for the waffles have, as is best, been made within the last 24-hours from the best raw products. The Italian method of creating a good creamy consistency is popular. The ice-cream chain, Paradis, covers large parts of the metropolitan region, but otherwise there are typically individual shops with their own production in the back room or nearby so they can quickly accommodate customers' wishes.

Fredensborg Palace
Kronborg
The forests of North Zealand have formed the setting for royal hunting activities for centuries. Therefore, it was natural that King Frederik IV wanted a hunting palace in the forests by Esrum Lake. However, it was only in 1720 that the king had the opportunity to realise his plan. At the opening, on 11 October 1722, he named his hunting palace, "Fredensborg". It was also Frederik IV who had a baroque garden landscaped north of Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød in the years 1720-1725. It became one of Denmark's finest gardens. In 1996, the baroque garden was recreated and is one of the very popular North Zealand attractions today. Fredensborg Palace The landscape gardener from Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, J.C. Krieger, was given the task of designing the palace and its garden. He constructed the central part of the main palace with the characteristic dome and the two octagons. In 1724-26 he added the church,

the orangery and two more buildings. In 1731, Krieger executed his final work on Fredensborg: A new courtiers' building called Chancellery House. This is where Denmark's future king, HRH Crown Prince Frederik, lives together with HRH Crown Princess Mary and their two children, Prince Christian and Princess Isabella. You can look forward to a very special experience in July where the palace itself is open to the public. It's not every day in a lovely month in summer that you can go exploring in a queen's private residence. Kronborg Castle Kronborg is at the same time an elegant renaissance castle and a monumental fortress and in 2000, the castle was included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The castle was built in 1574-85. In 1629 it was devastated by a huge fire where only the castle church survived. Today, you can see the original furniture and fittings in the church only. Already in the 17th century the castle was so well known outside of the country's borders that

Shakespeare chose the castle as the background for the classic play, Hamlet. One of the most beautiful rooms in the castle is probably the 62-metre long Knights' Hall or ballroom. But the King's and Queen's chambers are also worth a visit. Holger Danske sits in the casemates and waits in readiness for Denmark's hour of need, because the myth says that if this happens, he will rise up to defend Denmark. As a great bonus, you can take a look in The Danish Maritime Museum, which is an independent department of Kronborg and is also one of the largest museums of its kind in Europe. Here, the history of Danish trade and shipping is told through the centuries. Frederiksborg Castle Denmark's national treasure, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, has become a national symbol. Both the interior and exterior tell about Denmark's history. The enthusiastic hunter, Frederik II, acquired the manor, Hillerødsholm, in the densely forested North Zealand in 1560

and renamed the place Frederiksborg. His son, Christian IV, followed in his father's footsteps enthusiastically and from 1602 to 1615 he built a three-winged castle, which was magnificently equipped and suitable for a king with international ambitions. Frederiksborg Castle is a grand renaissance building, built on three islets. In the richly decorated church, there is a gallery with coats of arms and the famous Compenius organ from 1610. Denmark's Museum of National History was opened at the castle in 1885 and today it houses a national portrait gallery of Danish kings and queens since the 16th century as well as famous Danish personalities up to and including the 20th century. Frederiksborg Castle Garden – a baroque garden – is also worth a visit. The garden was recreated in 1996 following studies of J.C. Krieger's landscaping from 1725.

In the footsteps of kings Visit an area that is filled with history, culture, ancient oak trees and perhaps a ghost here and there. Tangible and visible memories from the last thousand years can be found in North Zealand. Some are intact and well-preserved. Others are severely marked by the passing of time, but yet strangely bristling with atmosphere.
Øresund. Marienlyst Palace also houses a collection of paintings worth seeing with association to Helsingør and environs as well as works of silver created by masters from the city. The palace is currently closed for renovation.
Marienlyst Palace Marienlyst Palace on the outskirts of Helsingør's northern area obtained its current appearance in the 1760s where the famous French architect, Jardin, extended Lundehave, which Frederik II had built as a summer house in the 1580s. The extension was executed in pure Louis Seize style and today the little palace stands as the most representative building of all from this period. In the palace's top story, the original Louis Seize interior can be seen, furnished in the style of the time and from here there is a spectacular view to Sweden over the stylish garden and across the
Jægerspris Castle Jægerspris Castle is located in beautiful Hornsherred and is Countess Danner's and Frederik VII's castle of hunting and love. From here, the king went hunting and fishing and pursued his great interest in archaeology. After the king's death in 1867, the countess inherited the castle and decided that the king's chambers should remain unchanged for all time and that an orphanage be established for the orphans and poor children from the capital city. The orphanage still exists today. The Countess' burial monument can be seen in the castle park.

Selsø Castle As if in a deep sleep, like Sleeping Beauty, Selsø Castle stood unoccupied for 143 years. The Knights' Hall and the adjoining chambers were used by the locals for corn and pheasant storage but in 1972, a careful restoration began and the castle appears today as it did when the last residents left the castle in 1829, without electricity and heating. Here, you will find Denmark's oldest kitchen with open hearth and an awful dungeon for insubordinate peasants. Two women have been imprisoned in the castle and one of them stabbed her husband to death and threw him in the moat. The blood stain can still be seen and Selsø's "White lady" has been seen floating around at night. The current castle was built in 1576, but today it has a baroque style following a significant renovation in 1734.
and paved courtyard. The place became the centre for many grand events in Denmark's history until the castle lost its importance, became dilapidated and was covered by shifting sand at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1849, Frederik VII was behind the initiative to unearth the ruins, which we can experience today. The ruins of Dronningholm Castle Close to Arresø, Denmark's largest lake, are the ruins of Dronningholm Castle. Legend says that the Danish King Valdemar Sejr built the castle as a morning gift for his Queen Dagmar on the occasion of their wedding in 1205 and it was then a favourite retreat for the royal couple. Dronningholm was torn down in 1575 and part of the materials were used for the construction of Frederiksborg Castle.
The ruins of Asserbo Castle The ruins of Asserbo Castle are north of the town Frederiksværk. Asserbo Farm was built by Copenhagen's founder, Bishop Absalon in 1163. Around 1450, the "farm" was extended into a "castle". It became a real nobleman's residence with a spectacular building that lay well-protected behind moats with a drawbridge, gate
The ruins of Gurre Castle The ruins of Gurre Castle are located by Gurre Lake between the two small towns of Gurre and Tikøb. Gurre Castle was King Valdemar Atterdag's main castle. The king loved the place and he died there in 1375. Today, you can see significant, but well-restored remains of the castle, which was mentioned for the first time in 1361.

North Zealand
Nature is open throughout the year North Zealand's long stretch of coastline is beautifully varied and together with forests, plantations, lakes and fields North Zealand is worth a visit throughout the year. Gribskov North Zealand offers large and small forests, e.g. Grib Skov (Grib Forest), which with its 5,600 hectares is Denmark's fourth largest forest. Long ago, Gribskov was divided between the church and the crown, but following the reformation, the entire area was handed over to the king. Until the 18th century, the area was mostly used for hunting and grazing of horses from the famous Frederiksborg Stud Farm. Subsequently, forestry began to gain greater importance than hunting and grazing. The word "grib" in Gribskov is an old Danish term, which, e.g. in "gribsjord" indicates an area that is not owned by anyone specific; that is originally a form of communal forest. 4 small folders have been published with maps that explain about the forest. Arresø A charming characteristic about North Zealand's nature is the unpredictable and changing weather. But regardless of the weather – or perhaps because of the weather – sailing on Arresø is a grand nature experience. Grand in another way as well because with its 40.7 sq.m., Arresø is Denmark's largest lake. Here, the landscape can be seen from another exciting angle and you can get close to the

bird life. Grey herons and white-tailed eagles are present in this internationally protected area. A sailing trip on "Frederikke" is a wonderful experience. Esrum Lake In certain places, Esrum Lake is 20 metres deep so it should be treated with respect. There are some places where you can swim close to the shore. Esrum Lake is Denmark's second largest lake and is formed like a big bath tub with deep slopes not far from the shore and a large, relatively flat floor. The bird life at Esrum Lake is very diverse. There are barbeque sites in several places along the lake. Nordskoven In Nordskoven, in the area by Jægerspris Castle, you will meet Denmark's oldest living organisms! These are gnarled oak trees that saw the light of day for the first time 1,400 to 1,900 years ago. vantage points over the lake with its reed-covered shores and islets. For example, here you will find herons, grebes, coots, greylag geese, tufted ducks and many other water fowl and wading birds. Tisvilde Hegn You would never guess unless you know it, but it is a fact that Tisvilde Hegn is Denmark's oldest dune plantation. Already at the beginning of the 1800s, the first seeds of Scotch pines were sewn. Later, spruce, birch, beech and oak were added. At a counting in the 70s, it was estimated that about one million people visited the forest that year. This is also where you will find the Troldeskoven, which comprises 100-180-year old Scotch pines. Hørsholm Palace Garden Hørsholm Church is located in the middle of the original, grand palace garden, which belonged to one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe – Hirschholm Palace. It was known as the Nordic Versailles. The palace is gone, but the palace garden has been restored and offers walks down all the avenues and on small islands. A fairy tale setting from the past.

Dansk Jagt- og Skovbrugsmuseum (The Danish Hunting and Forestry Museum) The museum is housed in the stable and barn buildings by Hirschholm Palace in the present Hørsholm, which were built in 1730-44. The 3,000 sq.m. museum exhibition gives those who are interested in nature the opportunity to find out more about topics such as the history of hunting and forestry, the cultivation of the heath, the timber industry and forestry tools. Esrum Møllegård The monks brought new technology with them from Europe to Esrum. The Cistercian Order were advanced engineers and the water was utilised to its last drop. Flour was produced, which was milled and then refined. The crown took over this knowledge and carried it on after the reformation. Esrum Mølle's current location is due to Christian IV who rerouted Esrum Stream and therefore had to move the mill. Today, the mill is situated as an impressive turbine mill with Esrum Stream bubbling through. Through the year, Esrum Møllegård has changing exhibitions.

North Zealand's art and culture Once upon a time, museums were rather stiff and formal. You almost had to tip-toe around and hold your breath along the way so you wouldn't cough. Well, it's not like that any more. Museums must be entered and touched. Karen Blixen's home as a child and as an adult A few minutes walk from Rungsted Harbour is Rungstedlund, with the Karen Blixen Museum. Karen Blixen (1885 – 1962) was and is one of Denmark's greatest authors. In 1991, Rungstedlund opened as a museum for the world renowned author. Karen Blixen was born in the house and had lived there through her childhood and a large part of her adult life. The rooms in the north wing still stand as she decorated them, always with fresh flowers in the vases. There is a small gallery with oil paintings, pastels and charcoal drawings done by Karen Blixen. Rungstedlund's 30 acres of land, garden and forest is now a bird sanctuary. Karen Blixen is buried on the area's highest point under an enormous beech tree. Meet Rembrandt in Nivå Nivå is located halfway between Rungsted and Humlebæk. This is where you will find one of Denmark's distinguished, old museums, Nivaagaards Malerisamling (paintings collection), which is particularly known for an excellent collection of older, European artists, e.g. the country's only genuine Rembrandt. Added to this is a grand collection of Italian paintings from the 16th century, e.g. a group portrait by history's first known female painter, Sofonisa Anguissola from Cremona. Louisiana – an international gem In a large, old park in Humlebæk, 15 km south of Helsingør is Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. The park's many sculptures blend beautifully together with the relaxed atmosphere that shrouds the entire, large complex. Today, Louisiana is internationally famous for the large, permanent exhibition, the changing exhibitions, the films and concerts – and in recent years also for the Children's Wing, which has three floors where children and youngsters are carefully taken by the hand and introduced to the wonderful world of art.

Denmark's famous polar explorer built the house by Spodsbjerg Lighthouse in 1917 and this is where he lived between his trips to the northern polar regions. Today, the house stands untouched since Knud Rasmussen's days. The interior is intact with furniture, paintings and photographs. The cannon foundry in Frederiksværk In the 1700s, a large and pompous cannon foundry was built in Frederiksværk. Today, the former foundry is called Gjethuset and is Frederikværk's art and culture house. The cannons have been replaced with a number of exciting art exhibitions and cultural events. Every year in July, a string of classical concerts are held. Willumsens værker J.F. Russia in Dronningmølle In North Zealand there is the beautiful nature area, Russia, where huge and impressive sculptures made by sculptor, Rudolph Tegner (1873 – 1950) present themselves. Besides the statue park, the large Tegner's Museum is also worth a visit. The museum is located in the park. More than 250 works in plaster, clay, bronze and marble are on display.

Coastlines and Fjords in North Zealand Oresund
Only a few places in Denmark offer such varied maritime experiences as is the case in North Zealand. There are excellent yachting harbours, good fishing waters, topclass beaches, beautiful fjords – and close to all things maritime are golf courses, sights and museums, which are all on a par with the international heavyweights.
132 kongernesnordsjaelland.dk
The Oresund coast is an attractive area about 50 kilometres long that stretches from the invisible border where the capital, Copenhagen, ends being a metropolis and lightly and elegantly glides over into a large, green area with loads of big and small houses along Strandvejen. Strandvejen is the approx. 400-year old coastal road that connects Copenhagen to Helsingør. The area is one of Denmark's most fashionable – this is where many Danes would like to live. This is actually not so strange, partly because it is so beautiful and partly because there are so many opportunities for activities and experiences. Yachtsmen find their way to the yacht harbours in Rungsted, Vedbæk and Nivå, which offer first-class facilities and short distances to museums and attractions of the highest quality. Nivå Harbour is also the Oresund coast's only natural harbour located in a scenic area close to a good, sandy beach.
North Zealand
THE MARITIME ORESUND From the beginning of time, Helsingør has been occupied with everything to do with harbour and Sound water. Ferry services, fishing and naturally, yachting. Helsingør Nordhavn – a few minutes walk from the city centre – is one of Zealand's largest yachting harbours with great facilities for seafaring people. From Helsingør, several of the shipping lines' large ferries sail frequently to Sweden every single day, all year round. Oresund Aquarium At the Oresund Aquarium in Helsingør, you can see precise reconstructions of environments from the floor of the Oresund in ten large aquariums, e.g. a reef, a sea grass meadow and a mud floor from the Sound's deepest point. Smaller aquariums focus on especially interesting animals. The divers ensure that the aquariums are always supplied with fresh animals from the right locations. Something quite special is that in a large pool, it is possible to touch, e.g. starfish, sea urchins and crabs.
Sailing on the Oresund

Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord Along the two fjords, which encase Hornsherred, a fjord path, a cycling and walking route have recently been laid with the opportunity of experiencing the fjord landscape and the natural and cultural environments that are associated with the life and history of the fjord. Here, you can experience rich bird life, the market towns and harbour atmosphere in and around Frederikssund and Frederiksværk.

The presence of history in North Zealand Almost everywhere you turn in North Zealand, you will feel the presence of history. Either from the large, old trees, the castles and palaces, the houses or perhaps from one of the grand museums that tell the stories of earlier times. Denmark's first and biggest computer Denmark's National Museum of Science and Technology is a wonderland of planes, steam machines, bicycles, cars, electrical appliances and other inventions. A fully operational car from 1888. Telephones, radios and computers, such as Denmark's first computer, DASK, which is bigger than your 'fridge. There is something to see, touch and listen to here for the whole family.
An exciting bouquet from Gribskov Municipality In Gribskov Municipality, a whole bouquet of small and exciting museums have been gathered together. Just to mention a few of the "flowers" in the bouquet: Museum of International Lighthouse History at Nakkehoved – Pibe Mølle (mill) from 1779 by Helsinge – Laugø Smedje (foundry) by Helsinge – The Ship Halls and The Old House in Gilleleje – Ramløse Mølle (mill) and Artisan Museum.
Frederik's Works Industrial Museum A visit to the fine, old powder works in Frederiksværk is a unique experience. Here you can walk around the world's best preserved powder works with water mills and operating machinery, the history of which goes all the way back to the 1750s.
North Zealand's only cathedral You need to tilt your head all the way back if you want to see the top of the 68-metre high church tower on North Zealand's only cathedral, St. Olai in Helsingør. The church's oldest parts are from the 13th century, but actually the church was not completed before 1480-1559.
Once many years ago Flynderupgård Museum in Espergærde is beautifully located between Egebæksvang Forest and the cultivated fields. In the main building, there are permanent exhibitions, e.g. an old grocery shop and a North Zealand peasant's living quarters. In addition, there are changing special exhibitions.
Hirschholm Palace – reused as a museum The majority of Danes know the story about the love relationship between Queen Caroline Mathilde and Struensee, the insane royal doctor of Christian VII. The highlight of this story was played out in Hørsholm in 1771 on and around the now torn down Hirschholm Palace. The palace's farm buildings, the coach house for the royal carriages and the administration building still exist and the two latter buildings house Hørsholm District Museum today.
Take a walk in an abbey One of the most beautiful and best preserved abbey buildings in Northern Europe can be found in Helsingør. The Carmelite Abbey of St. Maria church was founded in 1430 and in 2009 you can take a walk through the long corridors, music rooms and refectory of the abbey. (From 16 June to 15 September at 2 p.m. with a guide). In the 1600s, the church's organist was Dietrich Buxtehude and the organ he played on was restored a few years ago. Cultural history at Færgegården The museum, Færgegården, is housed in Jægerspris Estate's old ferryman's house from 1839 and is located by Crown Prince Frederik's Bridge, which connects Frederikssund to Hornsherred. Characteristic local finds from the Bronze Age, Viking times and Middle Ages can be seen.

North Zealand
Among the Vikings, monks and old stones There is one thing common to the three things mentioned above – it was long ago. And yet, in North Zealand, even in 2009, you can experience Vikings, monks and old stones. Vikings In Frederikssund, enthusiastic citizens have performed the Viking plays since 1952, which the town is so known for. Every year more than 250 adults and children take the audiences back to the dramatic history of the Viking times on the outdoor stage at Kalvøen. Here, you will also find the Viking homestead, which is an outdoor museum with free entrance. In 2009, "The Giant Starkad" will be performed, directed by Pierre Miehe-Renard. Monks Paradise on earth... that's what the monks at Esrum Monastery wanted to create. A place created for calm and contemplation far from the activities of people. Today, 850 years later, the paradise can still be sensed in the remains of the enormous mediaeval monastery, which rests in the beautiful landscape by Esrum Lake. During the year, there are many opportunities to get an insight into the life of the monks, e.g. with exhibitions, lectures and major events. For example, visit the grand Knights' market in June. Esrum Møllegård could also be one of the family's holiday highlights. Old stones In the Middle Ages, Æbelholt Monastery by Hillerød was one of the Nordic region's leading Augustine monasteries. Today, there is not much left other than old stones. The monastery was built in 1175, but was torn down following the reformation in 1536. At the monastery museum you can see the remains of approx. 300 excavated skeletons, which shed light on some of the illnesses of that time. Once a year, Æbelholt Monastery Market is arranged.

Attractive Attractions in Halsnæs In Frederiksværk, Hundested and Liseleje you can experience everything your heart desires, that's if you want to try some of the experiences described here. Each area has its own special atmosphere. Halsnæs Tourist Agency, Gjethusgade 5, 3300 Frederiksværk, tel. +45 47 72 30 01. www.visithalsnaes.dk
Frederiksværk is traversed by the channel, which among other things, is the home of the "Frederikke", the boat that navigates Arresø. The channel also supplies the driving power for the Gun Powder Works, where you can still see the old machines that were used in the powder production. The town's cultural gathering point is Gjethuset, which houses both art exhibitions and holds concerts. The highlight is Frederiksværk Music Festival - Denmark's largest chamber music festival held every year through the month of July. Hundested buzzes with a maritime environment around the harbour, which is a trading, ferry, fishing and yacht harbour. The harbour is also the home of restaurants in all price categories and galleries, which for example, show the special pictures that are inspired by "the Light over Halsnæs" - surrounded by the three waters. You may well say that Skagen slightly resembles Halsnæs! At the furthest point on the pier, is Glas Smedjen where you can

see the artists at work and the finished glass art. In June, the harbour makes room for a large art ware market and all of Halsnæs welcomes you to Open Studios in August. Liseleje is the essence of seaside life in the good old-fashioned way with lots of cosy environments, good cafés, fun specialty shops and not forgetting a good and disabledfriendly bathing beach. In August, the sky is covered by kites of all sizes and shapes at the annual Kattegat Kite Festival.
