WEATHERING THE STORM: Navigating saturated soils on the Golf Course
BY LOU SILVEIRA, GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Woodbridge historically receives 85 percent of the average of 12.8” of rainfall during the six month period beginning Oct 1. Year to date we have received just over 6.5”, which is 6 percent above normal for the year.
As we embrace the rainy season, our golf course encounters a natural phenomenon that comes with both challenges and opportunities – saturated soils. The impact of prolonged periods of rain can have a profound effect on the course's conditions and operations. It is essential we navigate through the challenges posed by saturated soils.
Soil Compaction and Drainage Issues:
Saturated soils can lead to increased compaction, hindering proper drainage. This compaction limits the movement of water through the soil profile, resulting in surface water accumulation.
Turf Health and Disease Susceptibility:
Excess moisture creates an environment conducive to turf diseases and other health issues. Saturated soils deprive the grass roots of essential oxygen, leading to stress and increased vulnerability to diseases. Regular monitoring and appropriate turf management practices are crucial to maintaining optimal turf health during wet conditions.
Course Closure and Playing Restrictions:
In extreme cases, saturated soils may necessitate temporary closures or playing restrictions to protect the course. Walking or playing on waterlogged areas can cause compaction, leading to long-term damage. The safety of our members and the preservation of the course's integrity are our top priorities during such challenging weather conditions.
Adjusted Maintenance Practices:
Our groundskeeping team adjusts their maintenance practices to adapt to saturated soils. Mowing and grooming activities may be temporarily suspended to prevent damage to the turf. Additionally, aeration and other soil conditioning practices are carefully timed to enhance water movement and promote optimal turf conditions.
Member Cooperation and Patience:
During periods of saturated soils, your cooperation is essential. Please adhere to any course closures or cart restrictions, respect designated areas, and exercise caution on the course. By working together, we can help mitigate the impact of saturated soils and ensure the longevity of our beautiful golf course.
Thank you for your understanding and commitment to maintaining the excellence of our golfing experience, even in the face of challenging weather conditions.
Sincerely,
