FRIENDLY REMINDERS

As part of our shared responsibility in maintaining the standards and harmony of our Club, we want to kindly remind everyone of a few important rules regarding the use of our facilities.

Dumpster Usage Guidelines

Our dumpsters are strictly reserved for Club-related waste. The waste management company we work with enforces stringent rules regarding what can and cannot be disposed of in these bins.

Unfortunately, we’ve recently experienced instances of personal household trash being placed in the Club’s dumpsters. For example, plastic bags of household trash in the recycling dumpster. Each violation results in a hefty fine of more than $400, directly impacting the Club’s operating budget. To help us avoid these unnecessary expenses, we kindly ask that you refrain from using the Club’s dumpsters for personal waste.

Parking Lot Reminders

Certain areas of the parking lot have been lined off with white paint to ensure waste trucks can maneuver and access the dumpsters without obstruction. It is crucial these spaces always remain clear. Parking in these restricted areas not only disrupts service, but also incurs a fine of more than $400 per incident.

We kindly urge all members and guests to park only in designated parking stalls. By doing so, you help us maintain the efficiency and organization of our parking area while avoiding unnecessary fines.

Your Cooperation Matters

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to these policies. Your efforts ensure our Club operates smoothly, remains compliant with waste

management regulations, and avoids avoidable expenses. Thank you for your attention to these matters and for helping us maintain the high standards of our country club. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our management team.

Reminders from the Staff

We hope you’re enjoying your time on the course and making the most of everything Woodbridge has to offer! As we continue to strive for an exceptional experience for all our members and guests, we’d like to share a couple of reminders to help keep things running smoothly and safely.

1. Please Check In Before You Play or Practice

Whether you’re heading out for a round or just hitting the practice range, please be sure to check in at the Golf Shop or Fitness Center when you arrive. This simple step helps us accurately track who’s playing, whether there are guests involved, cart usage, and more. It also eliminates any unnecessary guesswork and ensures everything is billed correctly. Thank you for helping us keep everything organized and efficient!

2. Walking on the Course is Not Permitted

While we understand the allure of the beautiful course, it’s important to remember that walking on the course during play for leisure (if you’re not golfing) is against Club rules. This policy exists for everyone’s safety—being out on the course increases the risk of being hit by an errant golf ball, tripping on uneven ground, or encountering other hazards. We kindly ask that you refrain from walking the course, and please note that Woodbridge will enforce this rule.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. These guidelines help us maintain a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to stop by the golf shop or reach out to our team.

Golf Preview Membership: Halfway Sold— Limited Spots Remain!

For the first time in our history, Woodbridge is offering a 12-month Golf Preview Membership, allowing your friends to enjoy full Club privileges without the long-term commitment. This one-year opportunity is the ideal way to experience everything Woodbridge offers before deciding on full membership.

Program Highlights:

One-Year Trial – A full year of membership at a significantly reduced cost.

Exclusive Initiation Fee – Only $2,000 (a dramatic savings from our standard $12,000 fee).

Full Membership Access – Unlimited golf, dining, fitness, pools, tennis, pickleball, and social events.

No Long-Term Obligation – After 12 months, they can decide if they want to continue—and their $2,000 initiation fee applies toward renewal.

Limited Availability – The Board approved only 10 spots for this program, and I’ve already sold about half of them!

If you know someone who could benefit from this limited-time offer, encourage them to act quickly—spots are filling fast!

Please share these opportunities with your golf buddies, neighbors, and family—it’s the perfect way to grow our Club while creating lasting connections.

Improve Your Game

Stay Positive

If you’re patient with yourself and stay relaxed during your quest to become a better golfer, the pieces will gradually fall into place. Things to remember: Nobody cares— golfers are narcissistic, and your playing partners will care a lot more about their own score than yours.

Don’t Take it Too Serious

Notice the natural beauty of the landscape of the golf course. You’re not playing for a living – so you don’t have to act like it! Enjoy your surroundings, remember that a relaxed mindset is why you’re out there. Have fun – your playing partners will remember you for a good attitude, not what your score was.

Focus on Shots Around the Green

Chip, chip, chip…and then with the remaining time Chip! Hit these shots from every angle. Short game work is less monotonous (and less frustrating) than banging balls on the driving range. Master the shots around the green and then worry about the long game.

Stay Balanced

Get your setup relatively conventional, and from there, as you make your swing and think about maintaining your balance. Don’t swing for the fences all the time. Your goal is to make a swing without struggling to keep your balance. Hold your finish, balanced. You’ll have a platform you can build on for years.

Play Fast

Keep it moving—make sure you’re not the reason your group falls behind. It doesn’t matter how good you are or how bad you are. Keep moving…and, you’ll score better. Try it.

Take Care of the

Course

Fix balls marks, fill divots, rake bunkers, keep carts at least 40 feet away from greens.

Golf Rules

Previous Question –

In stroke play, a player begins taking their stance while their caddie stands on the fringe of the putting green on an extension of the line of play behind the ball; the player then plays. What’s the ruling?

Answer –

There is no penalty if the caddie inadvertently stood on an extension of the player’s line of play behind the ball. However, the caddie must not stand in the restricted area to help the player with aiming. Standing off the green has no bearing.

This Month’s Question –

A player strikes their ball from a bunker onto the next teeing area. Another player, who is making a practice swing, accidentally strikes the moving ball. The ball comes to rest in a yellow penalty area. What is the ruling?

The player must play the ball as it lies in the yellow penalty area or take relief under the penalty area relief Rule (17.1d). Explanation: Rule 11.1b

Hot Ones Winners!

Congratulations to the winners of our Hot Ones Challenge - Peter Westbrook and Michael DeVries braved the heat and earned their wings! Not to be outdone by the grown ups, June Vilinskas was the youngest Woodbridger to make it through all 10 heat levels as well! Excellent job!

Woodbridge Members Take on Cancun!

Sixty of our members just returned from an unforgettable week at Secrets Playa Mujeres Resort in Cancun! They soaked in stunning scenery, enjoyed delicious food, and made lasting memories with friends. Some explored Chichén Itzá, others ventured to Isla Mujeres, and a few thrillseekers even went parasailing! A special shoutout to Steve Reeves, who celebrated his 70th birthday, and to Sharon Daegling for making a historic **hole-in-one**—the first in our ILT representative Pepe’s 25 years of travel! Playa Mujeres Golf Club honored Sharon with a flag during our farewell dinner.

Thank you, John, for another amazing trip—we can’t wait for next year’s adventure!

GOLF ACADEMY

February’s Tip of the Month To Fire the Hips or Not Fire the Hips?

The game of golf is full of pieces of advice that “they” say you must do to hit a ball properly. My sarcastic response, especially when it becomes obvious to me that the player’s stringent adherence to that concept is leading them away from the golf of their dreams, usually is, “Who are they? I’ve never met them?” Among the most prevalent is the idea that players must fire their hips and open up towards the target at the start of the downswing. I recently saw Rory McIlroy say that is his feel when he really wants to bomb one; meanwhile, Tiger Woods spoke famously on the Golf Channel about how during his best years that he felt that his lower body was as quiet as possible, waiting for his hands and arms to get in front of his body. So, this begs the question: who’s right? The nuanced but honest answer is they both are.

Let’s begin by giving examples of who the players are that fire their hips and why it works for them. Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy are all great players with fast hips, or those facing the target at impact. For Dustin Johnson, getting his hips to open up and allowing the handle of the club to lead more than most is a beautiful match for his closed clubface throughout his swing. All three, however, are structurally designed to have more open hips and are actually stronger and more stable with their hips than other players who have different anatomical makeups.

On the other side of the spectrum are players like Paul Casey, Jake Knapp, Jimmy Walker, and Brooks Koepka. These players all appear to be much more stable with the lower body, their hips facing much more at the ball at impact than the target. Rather than a dynamic spin of the hips, these players will feel that they are digging their feet into the ground as their hands, arms, and the club get in front of their bodies to stabilize before smashing the ball.

There are, of course, players in the middle of the spectrum between hips that are very open or facing the target and those that are more or less facing the ball. I fall into this category but run into much more trouble when my lower body outraces my hands and arms than the other way around. So how can we discover where you test out when it comes to firing the hips? Here is a simple screening that will give you a pretty good idea:

Step 1: Put your trail hand against a door jam at about hip height (right hand for right-handed golfers).

Step 2: Start pushing your hand against the wall.

Step 3: Paying attention to how strong you feel you can push, begin opening up your hips to face where the target would be.

Step 4: When you start to feel the pressure you're producing into the wall decrease, you have rotated past your ideal impact position.

Step 5: Repeat the process until you become very aware of your strongest position. This will be your ideal amount of hip rotation at impact.

Once you’ve identified where your optimal hip rotation lies, it’s important to incorporate that awareness into your swing. This doesn't mean simply trying to replicate the motion of someone else, but rather embracing the natural movement of your body that maximizes power and control. For some, this means more rotation, while for others, less is more.

Ultimately, what’s most important is finding the balance that works best for you. Firing the hips may give you extra distance, but it could also create more inconsistency if you're not built to handle that amount of movement. Conversely, a more stable lower body might offer better control and accuracy, but it could potentially limit some power. The key is discovering your natural rhythm and trusting that what feels strongest and most stable will lead you to the results you're looking for.

In the end, the game of golf isn’t about copying the pros — it’s about understanding your body and your swing. So, whether you’re a hip-firer like McIlroy or a more grounded player like Koepka, know that both paths are valid. The most important thing is finding what works for you and your unique swing mechanics, and sticking to it. Keep testing, keep adjusting, and most importantly, keep enjoying the game.

JACK MONTGOMERY MEET

Meet Jack Montgomery, a 6-yearold kindergartener at St. Peter School who loves recess, learning new things, and drawing houses. Jack’s favorite parts of tennis are volleys and when Coach Haley hits the ball super fast! Off the court, he enjoys playing with his brothers and cousins and refueling with tacos and ice cream.

Jack, who dreams of being a teacher, thinks a cheetah would be the best tennis player because they “can zoom quickly to the ball.” Keep up the great work, Jack—we’re cheering you on!

49er Update

It’s hard to believe we’re already in the second month of 2025!

Despite the chilly weather, we had a great turnout for January golf. A few brave souls even kicked off the new year with a round on Jan. 2—hot chocolate was definitely needed, but a good time was had by all!

The Fore Tee Niners offer a variety of fun formats every Thursday, and we’d love to welcome players of all levels. Join us for golf, socialization, and of course—lunch!

On Jan. 9, we played a game of “Throw Out Your Worst Hole.” Jan Campbell took 1st place, with Meg McKenzie in 2nd and Dora Shoemaker finishing 3rd. It was a fun format, though some of us wished it had been “Throw Out Three Holes!”

Jan. 16 was stroke play, where Kathy Cockayne claimed 1st place, Donna Aarons took 2nd, and Jackie Katzakian came in 3rd.

Jan. 23 was all about low putts. Nancy Little and Kathy Cockayne tied for 1st, while Lynn Stroh finished 3rd.

We wrapped up the month on Jan. 30 with stroke play on the River Course. Our big winners—tying for 1st—were Kathy Cockayne and Jan Campbell, while Donna Aarons finished 3rd. Looking back, it’s safe to say Kathy Cockayne is on fire!

We’re excited to welcome our newest Fore Tee Niner, Julie Scopazzi!

There’s plenty of fun on the horizon, including a great Valentine’s event on Feb. 13, hosted by Jennie Fuller and Shannon Hagen
