Golf Rules

Previous Question –

In Four Ball format, the side (Player A + Player B) lists the team’s score in general on their scorecard for a hole, and not which partner made the score. What’s the ruling?

Answer –

It is not enough to identify a score as the score of the side in general. For each hole:

• The gross score of at least one partner must be entered on the scorecard.

• There is no penalty for entering more than one partner’s score on the scorecard.

• Each score on the scorecard must be clearly identified as the score of the individual partner who made it; if this is not done, the side is disqualified.

This Month’s Question –

A player removes a broken tee touching their ball in the general area causing the ball to move; there is a penalty of one stroke and the ball must be replaced on its original spot. True or False?

Cart Driving

Reminder to please observe these cart driving rules at Woodbridge:

• Keep carts 40 feet or more away from greens (Handicap Flags - 20 feet or more).

• Carts must remain on the paths for all Par 3’s.

• Observe cart directional signs, stakes & ropes.

• Do not drive over curbing.

Sign up for Glow Golf CIGAR CLUB

As mentioned in the weekly newsletter, the Cigar Club is hosting a Glow Ball Golf Tournament. Yes, you read that right—we’re playing golf in the dark! We have space for 60 players, which is the maximum number of participants we can accommodate based on the equipment the Club purchased for the event. So, we’re capping the event at 60 players.

The tournament is scheduled for Fri, Sept 13, with a 7:45pm shotgun start. This event takes place the night before the Vocker Cup begins, making it a perfect warm-up. We’ll be playing nine holes using the new glow-in-the-dark LED golf balls, and trust me, they’re pretty cool. The cost to participate is $50 per player—$40 covers the equipment, and $10 goes toward the event buy-in. I’m hoping we sell out this event and establish it as an annual tradition.

Looking ahead to October, we’ll be hosting the annual 14 Club Challenge, where we’ll see if Andy Peterson can defend his championship title from 2023. In November, we’re planning to hold the Tin Cup Open, where you’ll play nine holes using only your 7-iron. It’s sure to be a blast with plenty of laughs.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming Glow Ball event on Sept 13. If you have any questions about any of the events, feel free to email me at Kevin. wolf@nm.com.

PLAY AT GOLFWEEK’S TOP COURSES

Troon is proud to announce that 72 of its affiliated courses have been named to Golfweek’s 2024 Best Courses lists. “Congratulations to all the courses recognized in these esteemed rankings,” said Kris Strauss, Troon’s Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing. “These rankings are a testament to the dedication of the associates who work tirelessly every day and to the ownership of these stunning locales, committed to delivering top-tier golf experiences.”

September’s Tip of the Month Managing a Mismatch: Possible Signs

Your Clubs Do Not Fit!

One of the most common things I hear among new players is “I need to get my swing in shape before I get fit for clubs.” There’s a logical side that of me that empathizes with that statement; golf clubs are expensive and a player’s fundamentals are likely to change for the better as they play more, especially if they take lessons. However, I have seen countless examples of students and friends who have developed bad habits over time as a result of poorly-fitted equipment. Balancing improving the swing, fitting the equipment to the player, and the finances of it all is the reason why I feel strongly that the individual guiding a

Balancing improving the swing, fitting the equipment to the player, and the finances of it all is the reason why I feel strongly that the individual guiding a player’s improvement (the coach) should be the one that fits the player. The coach will have an idea as to the direction the player’s swing needs to go and a proper fit can lead the player closer to their ideal swing.

player’s improvement (the coach) should be the one that fits the player. The coach will have an idea as to the direction the player’s swing needs to go and a proper fit can lead the player closer to their ideal swing. Here are some ways that your clubs may not be leading you to the promised land!

Length:

One of my close friends, Dave, is a very tall man, about 6’5”. Being in his mid-60s, Dave began playing as a junior golfer in the Bay Area in an era when all clubs where the same length, regardless of the player’s height. Because of his height, Dave developed a habit of a pronounced dip to simply get down to the ball, a move he still fights 50-plus years later! He even has a derogatory nickname for this compensation! A trend I have noticed amongst fitters is that

they are hesitant to lengthen clubs more than a quarter or half-inch. Dave now plays clubs that are 1.5 inches overlength and his swing is better for it!

Too Short! Lie Angle:

A club’s lie angle is the angle the sole of the club sits relative to the shaft and is among the most important details of a fit to get correct. A well-fitted lie angle allows the club to interact with the ground in as neutral a fashion as possible. For a right-handed player, a lie angle that is too flat will cause the toe to dig and the ball will drift to the right; club that is too upright (many times from being too long) will cause the toe to dig and the ball to start or curve left. Like Dave with the length of his club, players will develop all sorts of habits to fit a poor lie angle fit. Too upright, the player will swing more around their body a develop a push/hook shot pattern. Too flat, the player will develop a more upright swing and develop a pull/ slice pattern.

The Shaft:

A club’s shaft has been described as the engine of a golf club. The way I like to describe it is that every golfer’s swing has its own melody and the shaft of the club needs to fit the melody. Just recently, Callaway had a demo day here at the club during which I hit a 3-wood with a shaft that clearly fit my swing’s melody. Managing the direction of shots felt easier even than the 3-wood with which I had been playing and the ball launched through the same ideal “window” each shot. It made me realize that I had been managing a driver and 3-wood that weren’t quite as good.

The right shaft, especially with the longest clubs, can give your shots “the look.” “The look” happens when the ball appears to have air underneath it but is still soaring down range with energy. A ball falling out of the sky is a ball without enough backspin; one that climbs or appears to be laboring downrange is one with too much backspin.

The new shafts in my driver and 3-wood are stiffer and sturdier than what I had been playing with. In my case, a shaft that is too playful requires a much more patient feel, like I’m waiting forever for the clubhead to catch up in the hitting area. If I’m not patient enough, I most often will block the shot to the right. Years ago, I had a driver with the opposite problem in that it was too heavy and stiff. Over time with that club, I began pulling down on the club to start my downswing. Becoming too steep and narrow in transition caused many shots to leak to the right. The point being, when you find a club that feels easier to swing and play your best shots, it is probably a great fit for you and I suggest holding onto it!

Wondering if your clubs are ideal for you? Or wondering how much of it is you versus the equipment? A trained PGA Professional can provide the clarity needed to play your best golf moving forward! Luckily, we have no shortage of those hear at Woodbridge!

Jr Club Champs!

Earlier this month on Aug 3, we held our Junior Club Championship. I'm proud to say that for the first time in the history of the Club, we had siblings win the boys and girls divisions, respectively. Jack Main became Boys Champion for the second time by shooting a very solid 69. Meanwhile, his sister Giana Main became Girls Champion by firing a smooth 73.

In the Intermediate Division, Richard Fisher won by shooting 79, the only player in his division to break 80.

In the Youth Division, Karsan Iyengar was our champion by shooting 45 on the Lake Course.

Congratulations to all champions and competitors for playing some great golf and making our club proud of its future.

49er Update 49er

Champion — Congrats Donna!

August was a busy month for the Fore Tee Niners.

On Aug. 1, we concluded our three-day championship. The results are as follows:

2024 9-Hole Champion: Donna Aarons

Second Place Low Net: Kathy Cockayne

Second Place Low Gross: Shannon Hagen

“No one was more surprised than me; it was the best three days of golf of my life. That’s what keeps us all coming back,” said Donna.

After the championship, we enjoyed a game of One and Two Best Balls, with the team of Nancy Little, Terri Spring, Dora Shoemaker, and Meg McKenzie coming out on top.

We also introduced something new called String Theory. Each golfer was provided a length of string in feet equal to their 9-hole handicap, which they could use in increments or as a whole to get out of trouble. It was lots of fun for all!

Our Step-Aside Scramble had two flights:

2nd Flight Winners: Trudy Macleod, Jan Campbell, & Jackie Katzakian

1st Flight Winners: Anne Weisenberg, Patty

Kooyman, & Kathy Cockayne

The month will end with a Guest Day featuring stroke play with low putts as the game.

Looking forward to September, we’ll be playing a Cha-Cha-Cha, a Vegas Shamble, some stroke play, and finishing with our last Guest Day of the year.

We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our fabulous Guest Day hostesses: Kathy Cockayne, Terri Spring, and Meg McKenzie, for the terrific job they did this year.

Fore Tee Niners is a fun format for all levels of play. If you’re even thinking about getting out there, come join us for some exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery, and socialization. And of course, we always end with a yummy lunch.

Hope to see you out there!

Congrats Russ Humphrey!

Congratulations Russ Humphrey, who took second place in the Oregon Senior Open at Wildhorse Resort and Golf Club. The Oregon Senior Open is a professional tournament, held over three days on two courses -- Wildhorse Resort and Golf Club and The Golf Club at Birch Creek. Both courses are in Pendleton, Oregon.

Humphrey finished 2nd overall and won the low amateur honors. His scores were 68-68-67 = 203; 13 under par.

Well done, Russ!
