Course Update
A Note from our Superintendent Patrick Lucas
First and foremost, our Team on the golf maintenance end of the Woodcrest operation would like to send a warm welcome out to all of our Members! We look forward to providing you, as well as our frequent guests a truly enjoyable course experience each and every time you play. The season has gotten off to a great start, and we anticipate it will only get better. As you play the course you will often notice many of the projects, however small they may be, in motion. We embrace the philosophy of continuous improvement in an effort to enhance the course both in aesthetics and playability. Over the last year we have been able to elevate the quality of our bunkers, revitalize our ornamental and mulch beds, improve many areas with new drainage, and lots of general clean-up and tree work among other things. Our list of “things to do” is long and certainly growing. The work and transformation will continue, as we are committed in maintaining the finest course possible. As I conclude this note, we are just seeing the sun peak out for the first time in 6 days. The lack of sun, coupled with 4+ inches of rain this week has left the course saturated. Under conditions like this, we often ask that carts remain on the paths to protect the condition of the turfgrass and avoid long-lasting damage. These measures are most certainly needed in an effort to protect the course for season-long enjoyment. Also, during these periods the grass grows at an accelerated rate. This coupled with saturated conditions makes it difficult for our staff to keep up with the mowing, especially the rough, without doing damage. Under these conditions, the rough will be a bit longer and more difficult than usual. This is not by design. It is our goal to maintain a uniform dense stand of rough that complements our golf course. Although our rough may play a bit more difficult than most, it’s not a function of height, but rather density. It is that density that often serves as a “containment policy” when balls roll through the fairway and into the rough. Without that dense rough, many balls would end up in the tree line, creating an even more difficult shot. We look forward to seeing you out on the course and hope that you enjoy the season! Tennis Coach’s Corner Meet Lance Lee
Lance Lee was born and raised in Philadelphia. He grew up competing in Philadelphia area tennis district tournaments. He went on to compete in sectional and national level tournaments. Lee’s tennis career continued in college where he played at the Division I level at Hampton University in Hampton Virginia. An elbow injury ended his competitive career during his junior year. Lee went on to earn his degree in sports marketing, and then continued his educational pursuits earning his Juris Doctorate at the University of the District of Columbia School of Law. Lee put a legal career, slated to begin in the District Attorney’s office, on hold and accepted the Head Pro position at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis & Education Center in 2005. He progressed from Head Pro to Director of Tennis, and recently was promoted to Vice President of Tennis and National Partnerships. Under Lee’s direction, the center’s programs have grown tremendously, as well as, the relationship with the USTA. Examples of said growth range from the center becoming a certified Regional Training Center, to it being one of the first clubs to have permanent 60 foot lines installed on courts [in order to fully implement a Quick Start program and host QS tournaments], to sending over 50 young people to play college tennis and hundreds more who have gone on to attend college. This is only naming a few of his accomplishments.
Lance Lee, Woodcrest Country Club Tennis Pro
In 2010 Lee took on an additional responsibility. He became the head men’s tennis coach at Philadelphia University. In his first season as Head Coach, he took the team to the first round of the NCAA Division II Regional tournament, by posting a 19-7 record and receiving an at large bid, by being ranked #5 in the East division. Aside from strong leadership and coaching experience, Lee has made it a point to instill a sense of community service in his team. Team members are required to volunteer in some capacity a minimum of one hour a week. Many of the players fulfill their service at AAYTE, volunteering their time in the clinics. It is one of Lee’s goals not only to take the tennis team to the next level on the court, but to take the team and the University itself to the next level through community give back and interaction. Some of Lee’s other accomplishments include: USTA Junior Team Tennis, National Committee Member 2010-present USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning, National Committee Member 2010-present PTR certified at the professional level / PTR certified national tester USTA certified High Performance Coach PTR state member of the year 2007 USTA Middle States High Performance committee member 2007-2010 Philadelphia Area Tennis District board member 2008-present USTA Middle States Strategic Planning committee member 2008-2010 2008-2009 Boys/girls 16 and under zonals coach 2008-2009 Boys/girls 10 and under cross sectional training coach 2010-2011 Nike Junior Tour Coach, Boca Raton Florida
