Course Update

A Note From Our Golf Pro: Bill Torlucci Where do I begin? So much has happened this year and so much is being planned for the coming months. New this year was the First Tee Program, we just completed our first 8 week program. The second program is 6 weeks and started July 14th, this will take us through the remainder of the summer. Our Junior Clinics are underway every Tuesday, two clinics; 4pm & 5pm. We started a Junior’s Camp this summer featuring one week programs involving; golf, swimming & tennis activities; we are getting ready for our third and fourth weeks of this camp to begin. Along with normal golfing activities, our President’s Cup Matches are underway, along with our Players Club Championship Matches. It’s been a great season, everything will start to wind down at the end of August though. The golf course is in incredible condition and it has been that way all year. Patrick Lucas and his staff have done an incredible job. Over the years I have seen the course, I don’t think I have ever seen it look as good as it does right now. We are receiving a lot of compliments from the play we are getting. Activity in general at the club has been high. We have a lot of member activity and the Pro Shop has had a lot of activity, we couldn’t be happier. The most popular apparel brands this year in the Pro Shop are TaylorMade, Adidas and Cutter & Buck. Also, Nike apparel has a new line called: Legend which is doing a lot of manufacturing for Nordstroms, that line has been great to carry. Popular for footwear this year are the usual suspects; Nike, Taylor Made, Adidas, Foot Joy and Ashworth. Callaway has come out with a great golf ball, which is super soft and geared towards golfers with a slower swing speed. They are multi-colored, so they are fun to play with and have been attracting attention. I am already ordering for fall and making sure we have Cutter & Buck outerwear, which is always in high demand. C&B is a Seattle based company, I’m not surprised their outerwear is made so well. Another fall favorite we might plan for is the ladies trunk show. This is a great way to showcase female, golf apparel and also extend discounts. We are in the process of scheduling two Demo days and also preparing for a great Labor Day weekend sale. For the later holidays this year, we will likely be holding a Wine & Cheese Party in the Pro Shop where you can get your holiday shopping done for your golf enthusiast friends and family, while also enjoying some wine and complimentary gift wrap service. If there are ever any questions or special requests, we hope everybody feels free to reach out to me or the Pro Shop: 856-428-1243.

Tennis Coach’s Corner Tennis News

The tennis program at WCC is up and running. We have a solid women’s group that averages between 4-6 participants every Monday morning from 9-10:30 am. This clinic focuses on live ball drills where the ladies are battling with one another under the constant supervision and tutelage of Lance. Point play drills with a strong focus on doubles play and a strong focus on technical development are just some of the things that are highlighted during this clinic. The men’s clinic is up and running every Tuesday evening from 6:00-7:30pm. We have been averaging between 4-6 players every week. Along with intense point play the men are getting a great cardio work out and leaving the courts with a good sweat. Depending on individual schedules, the second day of men’s and women’s clinic is determined on a weekly basis based on who is available on any particular day. Private lessons are being done at various times throughout the week. Lance will make himself available at an agreeable time almost any day of the week. If you aren’t feeling ready to immerse yourself into a clinic, maybe feeling a bit uncertain about your skills? Private lessons are the best way to get your game up to speed so that you go into matches or clinic situations with some confidence. The Friday night match play has yet to really get off the ground. It seems that many people are out of town on weekends so am looking to pick a new day for the round robins. In total we have between 12-16 active tennis members. New players are always encouraged to come out and hit the courts! Contact Lance Lee at 609-678-6501 or llee@legacyyte.org if you have a group you would like to play with or a suggestion for a better day or time. Coach’s Tip: Catch the Volley for Power & Control The most common error I see when students are attempting to volley is over swinging. On a volley, less is more. The more compact the motion is the more control the player will have. Pace is generated by two ways when executing this shot 1) from the legs driving into the ball and 2) by redirecting your opponents pace. Power on a volley does NOT come from generating racket head speed the way in which it does on a ground stroke. As a practice tool, remove the racket from your hand. Have a friend toss you a ball and try stepping into the ball and simply catching the ball (see photo #1). When you catch a ball you do not follow through or violently swing your arm, you freeze your hand at the point of the catch. The same concept should be applied when striking a volley (see photo #2). After contact the strings should be facing the target, NOT towards the ground or anywhere else (see photo #3). Whether you are a doubles specialist or a singles player trying to be aggressive and finish off the point at the net, you must have solid technique in order to volley effectively. Next time you are out on court remember this coaching tip, attack with your feet, but “catch” the volley with your racket! Lance

Welp Reviews

Welp: A Collection of Woodcrest Reviews

A Recent Review From Avnet

“On behalf of Avnet, we wanted to pass along our appreciation for you and your team planning the best Customer Appreciation Day our corporation has had in our 19 years hosting such an event. Woodcrest Country Club was the absolute best venue we could have asked for and far exceeded all expectations. Everything from start to finish was seamless. The attention to detail and quite honestly the stuff we would never have even thought about was phenomenal. The customer and supplier feedback was simply overwhelming from our event survey. They felt like they were pampered from the time they arrived at the country club until the event was over. From a golf perspective - the bag drop was quick and professional, the golf course was in great shape, the greens were spectacular as they always are. It was quite impressive how the golf course handled such a large outing of 225 golfers. In fact we heard over and over how the folks wanted to visit Woodcrest again to enjoy playing a round there. Upon finishing golf, our guests were treated exceptionally the balance of the day. The food received raving reviews and your team provided so many varieties of food to enjoy. You guys nailed it. Your staff was great - very professional and always there to help. Quite candidly, it was honestly a big risk to move venues after such a long tenure at one location and it was the best decision we could have made. You and your team rocked it! We would not have made the switch if not for your involvement and expertise. The experience our guests enjoyed will help our company be more successful because of it. We look forward to the years ahead of you hosting our event and the partnership that we have established. Brian Lumley District Manager, Philadelphia | Avnet Electronics Marketing

Employee Spotlight

q&A With Liz and Sam , Aka “slam!”

What got you interested in working in the hospitality industry? S- My mom really pushed me to go into the hospitality industry. She thought it would be something that I would enjoy so I decided to give it a try. L- I knew by the time I was 6 that I wanted to work for the Walt Disney Company, making magic for anyone who would let me. Back then, I was happy just to greet the families arriving at Magic Kingdom, but by the time I hit high school I knew I could do something greater - and create memories for whomever I met. I’ve been fortunate to have moved all around with my family (Dad was in the Air Force), so I immediately picked up the knack for talking to just about anyone. It sort of seems like I was destined to land in the hospitality industry. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Tell us a little about your main roles & responsibilities for Woodcrest. S +L- A little bit of everything. We’ve had the best opportunity here to work in just about every role here at WCC, aside from Golf Professional. We’ve grown our spots, focusing on event operations as well as helping open the new Bar 1929. It’s pretty incredible for being as young as we are, to be on an opening team of a world class country club.

Employee Spotlight What experiences have you had which are allowing you to manage so much responsibility at such a young age?

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

S + L- We do handle quite a lot here. But the great thing about hospitality is everything builds on itself. It is definitely not a text book career, every day looks completely different than the last. But Sam and I have the same outrageous personality to take on sometimes more than we can chew, but we’ve been able to handle more that way. Stress is part of the gig, and I know for me it’s an adrenaline rush. In University, we were student leaders in professional event related organizations, as well as community supporters by starting a fresh farmer’s market in North Philadelphia. We’re maniacs, and we love every minute of it.

S- Getting to interact with all of our guests and members and helping to create memories for them through the events that they host here, or just having a good time spending the day here as a member.

We’re not sure if our readers know this, but you two are best friends, how long have you been best friends aka “Slam” (Liz & Sam)

L- That this doesn’t feel like a job to me. I am here, sometimes every day of the week, to create something incredible for our Members, their families, and their guests. Sometimes my days are long, but coming here and seeing everyone makes a difference. And honestly, I thought I would never get to learn everyone’s names - and I think I am pretty close. We have the best members!

S + L- We are both graduates of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, at Temple University. It If you had to describe yourself as any is a very small school within Temple, and we immesuperhero- which would it be and why? diately clicked. We naturally gravitated to each other because we are very similar, and obviously awesome. I guess we met back in 2010 - although some days it S- Wonder Women- self explanatory :) feels much longer than that. L- THOR. Definitely. One, because our hair can look so similar sometimes. Two, because I can move tables like it’s nobody’s business. What is it like working with your best Three, because he doesn’t get angry all too friend? quickly, but when he does, watch out. And I just LOVE him. L- Awful. Not that I would try, but I can’t get away with anything when she’s here! Only kidding. Working with Sam is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. I never thought in a million years I’d be blessed with working alongside someone I blend so well with. She fits in where I fall short, picks me up when I am down, and cooks me awesome food. It’s the best of both worlds. S- We can drive each other crazy, but I definitely wouldn’t want to work with anyone else!
