club NEWS Dear Woodcrest Members, It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the tail end of the summer, but that is in fact the case. Unfortunately July and August was very hot, humid and wet, and as I write this letter we are beginning another heat wave in the mid 90’s. With September here at last, I am optimistic that we will be blessed with better golfing weather this fall. The fall is always a great time of year to enjoy the golf course, as well as our spectacular patio outside of Bar 1929. The Friday Night Woodcrest Happy Hours with live music has been a great hit this year and they will continue throughout the fall season. Please make sure you check the calendar and call for reservations to ensure you and your party can be accommodated. Assuming the weather cooperates, we will be aerifying greens October 22nd and 23rd with medium tines and tighter spacing which should heal up nicely, yet meet our objective of decreasing compaction and improving soil structure. The greens aerification will go a long way in helping to prepare and ensure we have a healthy and happy 2019 golf season. The re-implementation of the intermediate cut around the fairways seems to be a hit with virtually everyone who plays the golf course. Although it took some time to re-establish, I am happy to say it’s here to stay. We are in the process of renovating the 19th hole practice area, which will include a new bunker, green and fairway. This will be a great area to practice your short game, especially chipping, putting and bunker shots. We expect to have it open May 2019. Later this fall we will be unveiling our 2019 membership structure and rates. We will also be continuing the New Member Referral Program. We anticipate membership to continue to grow, so please take advantage of the fall incentives. Please join us for our Member Appreciation Night, Wednesday, November 14th. Make sure to invite a guest who might be interested in joining the club. As always, George Jordan, our Director of Food & Beverage and his team are eager in helping you plan and execute your special event. Our holiday party calendar is rapidly booking up, so please make sure to reach out to George and the Woodcrest Sales Team to reserve your party. Lastly, please take advantage of the new Woodcrest Texting Program. Details are enclosed in the newsletter. This is a great way to receive the most up to date Woodcrest information including course conditions, Bar 1929 specials, events and more. Make sure to sign up and spread the word. A special thanks to each of you for your support and helping to make Woodcrest a vibrant and dynamic country club. If there is every anything I can do for you, please do not hesitate to let me know. Kind regards,
Patrick Lucas Director of Operations

Open Letter from.. R. L. Friedman
I am in the process of retiring from the practice of Law and will be relocating to Florida by the beginning of November. Shary and I have been members since 1985 and have spent innumerable hours at the Club between Golf, Cards, and Social. Woodcrest is a very special place since it's history dates to 1929 as a Public Course and then the conversion to Private in 1947. In June of 2013, I wrote to the Courier-Post that the Re-Opening by the new owners was great news and that all members of the community will welcome the Club with open arms. Further, that the continuation of this great course will ensure great enjoyment at the property for many years to come. Fortunately, the owners have followed through in their efforts to continue the great tradition at Woodcrest. The membership is vibrant, active and enthusiastic and I am confident the Club will survive for the future usage of the golfing community in our area. When I was Golf Chairman, I would often publish commentary about the Club. Some articles were well received, others not so much. I would like to include my favorite regarding the Member-Dog Tourney of 1994 for your perusal. "Friedman Triumphs In 1st Annual Member-Dog Tourney" The morning of Saturday, January 28th it was a cold and cloudy day with a temperature of 28 degrees and wind chill of 8 degrees and, indeed, a fitting setting for the 1st Annual Member-Dog Tourney at the 1st tee at 9:30A.M. R. L. Friedman and Lucky checked in and began their round in the only group of the day. Friedman made the turn at 41 and with a birdie at 17 needed a par on the 18th for a round of 77. His approach to the 18th hole with a 7 iron left him with a 20 foot putt. Friedman was well aware that a two-putt would secure his lead in the closed clubhouse and his round of 77 would clinch the tournament. He calmly stroked his first putt within one foot and tapped in for his par. He waved to the non-existent crowd and proceeded to the parking lot with Lucky to change his shoes at his car. Prior to leaving, Friedman was interviwed about his round with Lucky. Friedman was extremely modest about his victory and gave all the credit to Lucky. He stated "Lucky is a wonderful playing companion, he plays his own game chasing squirrels throughout the course and geese at the 9th hole. In addition, as compared to many playing partners during the season, he was never talking in the middle of my back swing, walking in my line on the green, digging up divits, slamming clubs into the turf or taking too long to play. All in all, he is a great playing companion. My only complaint is that he never gave me a putt all day. For the Golf Committee, R. L. Friedman

Socially Speaking... By George Jordan, Director of Food & Beverage
Where does the time go? Summer is winding down at Woodcrest! It seems like yesterday we were filling the pool and getting ready for summer! It has been one rainy, hot and humid summer, to say the least. Looking forward to a dry, sunny autumn. To all the pool families, the fun times and good food continue throughout the autumn. The Bar 1929 deck is the best place to sit around the fire pits and enjoy the cool nights with friends and family. Friday Night Live continues through October. The Wednesday Theme buffets were a big hit this summer as we saw a dramatic increase in member activity. We had two Seafood Nights this summer and both were well attended. Woodcrest received rave reviews on the flavor and quality of the seafood. A special thanks goes out to our Executive Chef, Abe Foy, and his culinary team for the delicious food. Autumn will be very busy at the club. We are sold out with functions every weekend. In addition, Woodcrest has many events planned for the membership. September 7th and 8th we will host a two day Men’s Member Guest Tournament. Sunday & Monday, September 9th and 10th celebrate the Jewish New Year at the club and Wednesday, September 19th, Break the Fast. Friday, October 5th we will hold Oktoberfest with Billy the Kid Band. German food specials, beer tasting, and much more! The events are always more fun when you are there! I would like to welcome a new member of the Bar 1929 culinary team, Anthony Cioe. Anthony has an extensive background in Italian and Asian food styles. Stop in Bar 1929 these next few months to try his creative cuisine. Please continue to refer friends, family, and colleagues to Woodcrest because after all, membership is the lifeblood of the club! When family or friends are looking for a venue to host a party please inform them of Woodcrest and our fine catering department. Pick the date and we will take care of the rest. If you are interested in hosting a Holiday party for your business, there are a couple of dates still available! Best,
George

PAN SEARED SCALLOPS WITH ANTHONY
If you can't make it to Bar 1929 for some appetizers and drinks (we'll forgive you) why not try something different at home! Anthony happily shared the Pan Seared Scallops recipe for you, and we think you'll love it.
The Ingredients 5 sea scallops 6 spears of asparagus 2 Tbsp unsalted butter Âź tsp fresh chopped dill Âź tsp fresh chopped tarragon salt & pepper to taste
Procedure 1. Melt 1 Tbsp butter in saute pan over medium to high heat. 2. Once hot, add scallops to pan and season with salt & pepper. 3. Sear for 2 minutes, then flip scallops to sear the other side, while basting with the butter. 4. While scallops are cooking, roast asparagus with oil and salt & pepper at 400 degrees for about 5 minutes or until tender.
5. Place 4 asparagus spears on a plate and fan out. 6. Add the scallops on top, then top scallops with remaining asparagus. 7. Add remaining butter to pan and brown on high heat. 8. Season butter with tarragon and dill, then pour over scallops and asparagus.
