2015 promises to be an exciting one here at Woodend Barn as we celebrate 21 years of showcasing the best of local and national creative talent. We’ll be celebrating in style with a special fundraising dinner in February attended by our Patron Dame Evelyn Glennie who is also celebrating a special birthday this year! We are also delighted to have been confirmed as part of Creative Scotland’s National Portfolio of Regular Funded Organisations, and recognised for our work. My thanks go out to everyone who made this possible. So what can we look forward to over the coming months? Wednesday nights are our Film Nights at the Barn, so come and check out our special programmes linked to the Awards Season, the Scottish Landscape and the lives of Artists. Our new programme of micro-festivals gets off to a blazing start with our Jazz-fest in May, headlined by the incredible
Courtney Pine. In fact music lovers of all genres will be equally spoiled with performances from Scottish Opera, Rura, The Gould Piano Trio and Jenna Reid to name but just a few. Saturday 9 May 8pm Jenna Reid Trio
Wednesday 20 May 7.30pm Film: Local Hero (1983) (12A)
Taught from a young age by two of the most renowned names in Shetland fiddling (Dr Tom Anderson MBE & Willie Hunter), Jenna Reid has fast become one of Scotland’s most promising fiddling talents. Her debut solo album was released in 2005 and she now presents her fourth – Live in Shetland.
Partly shot in the Aberdeenshire village of Pennan, Local Hero not only deals with our relationship with landscape and the environment, but also the influence of industry and economics. An American oil company sends a man to Scotland to buy up an entire village where they want to build a refinery. But things don’t go as expected.
Jenna is joined at the Woodend Barn by two long-time collaborators, pianist Harris Playfair, and her sister, Bethany, also on fiddle.
Whether you’ve seen this film before or not, it’s the ideal opportunity to see Scottish director Bill Forsyth’s ever-relevant classic on the big screen. Running time: 111 minutes

A Japanese folk tale of a boy, his cello and some unexpected friends. Combining music and shadow puppetry, Gauche the Cellist tells the story of a musician who regains his confidence and self-belief with the help of some characterful woodland creatures. Composed by Shiori Usui, with puppetry by Vision Mechanics, Gauche the Cellist is a multi-sensory performance that will appeal to children and grown-ups alike.

Sustaining Creativity – Arts Projects in 2015 In addition to our performances, film and events programme, Woodend Barn is involved in a series of curated projects that allow us to form further links with our local community, national artists and regional creative initiatives. During Spring 2015 these projects include: THE BARN CIRCULARS
COMPANY OF WOLVES
Woodend Barn’s Environmental Art Walks Friday 10 April to Monday 13 April
The creative team behind this nationally acclaimed physical theatre company return to Woodend Barn for another residency. During May they will benefit from access to our venue and inspirational environment to support the development of a brand new piece of theatre work for Scotland.
Woodend Barn leaves the building. Inspired by artist Helen Smith to pack up our art materials, musical instruments, laptops and gardening tools, we will be forming creative partnerships with other community groups in Banchory and Crathes and linking with the inaugural Look Again Visual Arts Festival in April 2015. Join us on the route of our new Environmental Art Walks known as ‘The Barn Circulars’, that link the Barn with its communities in Crathes and Banchory, with a timetable of outdoor creativity. Singing in Crathes Woods, drawing and painting by the river – prepare to experience local creativity in a whole new light! ECO ARTS PROGAMME – JOHN NEWLING Woodend Barn is delighted to welcome back artist John Newling to Banchory to help us discuss and explore new plans for an eco-arts programme, linking issues of sustainability and the environment with creative projects. See website for details.
‘HOME TRUTHS’ – EXPLORING TRANSNATIONAL WORK MOBILITY IN THE OIL COMMUNITY During Spring and Summer 2015 we look forward to supporting colleagues at Aberdeen University on the development of a creative research project, looking at the movement of people within the oil industry and how this impacts on local communities. Keep checking the website for details of these projects as they develop.
