The Barn believes in communities and of bringing our communities together through the celebration of creativity and our extraordinary environment. Our aspiration for the new season is to take you on an incredible journey that reflects this spirit, with ideas and creativity conceived by Scotland’s leading artists and the finest creators of dance and theatre. With this in the forefront of our minds, we have planned a programme for you to enjoy this summer, which as I write this message may be subject to change due to the global events that unfold around us. At the Barn, we aim to manage this global challenge by working together as a community and to come through it not only with the greatest compassion but as a strong community unit. We are fortunate to receive a financial base from our supporters though none of what we do would be possible without the support of our audiences and volunteers of which we are truly thankful. Have you always wanted to sing but not had the confidence? Led by Fiona and Mark Hope and Lynne Burns, come and discover your own voice by singing songs from all over the world with this friendly group of new and old singers. We don’t do concerts we just have fun!

Are you getting married and looking for something a bit more offbeat and ‘out of the box’? Hitched is the Barn’s Wedding Fair with a huge range of unique and inspiring local exhibitors, all hand picked and offering an alternative to traditional choices. The ethos is to support small, local, eco-conscious and creative businesses. In addition to discovering great local vendors, the fair is the ideal opportunity to have a look around the Barn itself, as your ideal, creative venue to get hitched!

WOVEN EXPERIMENTS: WALL HANGING

Join Friends of the Barn for a talk with Banchory’s Robbie Simpson to hear about his journey as an international mountain runner. Amongst his many achievements Robbie received a Bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games Marathon 2018 and Bronze medallist at the World Mountain Running Championships 2015.

Join handweaver Lynne Hocking-Mennie and explore the wide range of creative possibilities that weaving offers. Using a neutral warp on table looms, you’ll be able to experiment with a range of yarns and weave structures to create a wall hanging that’s perfect for your favourite space. All materials are provided, but you’re welcome to bring along any yarns that you may wish to use.

Tickets are FREE for Friends but places are allocated on a first come, first served basis so please book your ticket in advance.

JENNY STURGEON: THE LIVING MOUNTAIN

The Living Mountain is an evocative, uplifting and compelling audio-visual performance inspired by the celebrated novel by Nan Shepherd. Devised and performed by musician Jenny Sturgeon, The Living Mountain considers human connections with wild places through lyrical and melodic interpretation of text, interweaving song with visuals from the Cairngorm Mountains National Park.

Stevi Benson’s hand cut paper pieces juxtapose the strength and fragility found in natural forms. THE ART OF PAPER

They said she’d never do it.

Led by artist Anna Shirron, this 4-week block of workshops will explore some of the techniques involved in paper cutting and weaving. Participants will have pieces to take home each week and can also work on an ambitious larger piece. Bring along ideas of images you would like to use and there will be plenty of inspirational books available. Please bring a packed lunch.

Back by popular demand, come and learn the traditional art of Mokuhanga with artist and master printmaker Michael Waight. Mokuhanga differs from the Western approach to relief printing by using watercolour or gouache without using a printing press. We will be using a barren in order to press the colour from our wooden blocks onto Japanese paper. Please bring a packed lunch for our break.

Come and explore the wonderful Wild Garden at the Barn with outdoor expert Mandy Tulloch and celebrate early summer. From buzzy bees to wriggling tadpoles we will look for signs of nature, collect some lovely leaves and other garden treasures and use them to create something special to take home. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Set across a 16-year span from Mad Men to the moon landings, this moving new production imagines a world where the ghosts of fascist Europe collide with the horrors of The Handmaid’s Tale, before washing up on a joyful seashore.

Join us for an in-depth look at figure and portraiture with working artist; Catriona Platten. Using simple exercises, you will explore different ways to represent the human form in drawing. Working from a nude model, you will get the opportunity to try out a variety of approaches and techniques to create a range of life drawings. This class is suitable for all levels.

King Leontes rips his family apart with his jealousy, but grief opens his heart. Will he find the child he abandoned before it is too late?

BOTANICAL TEXTILE PRINTING

Work alongside artist Fiona Hall of Camban Studio for a Wild Garden inspired textile printing workshop. Explore a number of printing techniques, abstract mark making and pattern compositions taking inspiration from a range of foraged plant materials. Mix colour and test your ideas before creating a final design to be stencilled, mono or block printed onto linen placemats. Please bring a packed lunch for our break.

Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Up and coming artist of the year’, fiddle player Ryan Young brings new and exciting ideas to traditional Scottish music. This fiddle player is brimming with fresh melodic ideas, an uplifting rhythmic drive and a great depth of dynamics and precision. Ryan’s sound is very distinctive, bringing each listener on an adventurous and emotional journey. For this tour Ryan is joined by Jenn Butterworth, one of the most notable folk guitarists in the UK acoustic music scene.

ABOYNE CELLO FESTIVAL: THE THREE CELLISTS

Louise Forbes is back to teach her popular spoon carving workshop. You will learn how to rasp, file and sand to make your spoon perfectly smooth. Each attendee will leave with their very own hand carved wooden spoon, as well as the skills and confidence to take the activity forward. All materials, tools and light lunch provided.

The annual Three Cellists recital offers the opportunity to experience some of the best cello ensemble playing imaginable. Featuring Rebecca Gilliver, principal cello of the London Symphony Orchestra, Philip Higham, international soloist and principal of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and James Halsey, Festival Director and cellist of the Bingham String Quartet.

CREATIVE KIDS CAMP

After the success of last summer’s Creative Kids Camp, we are back this year for a week of art-focused experiences to stir children’s imagination. Join us for a week full of creative fun, music, art, crafts, theatre and dance. Each day children will get to try two different activities led by professional tutors as well as exploring our Wild Garden where we will spend our lunch time. The camp is suitable for kids going into P4-P7 after the summer. Children can be dropped off from 9am and collected by 5pm daily and should bring a packed lunch each day.

SILVER EARRINGS

Try your hand at traditional jewellery making and learn techniques such as saw piercing, soldering, texturing and polishing to create a pair of silver earrings. Under the expert tuition of professional jeweller & silversmith Megan Falconer, you will have the choice from a selection of hoops, studs or drop earrings to create the perfect style for you. Please bring a packed lunch.

The Barn is based in refurbished farm buildings, between Crathes Castle and the beautiful Deeside town of Banchory, just 30 minutes from Aberdeen.

SILVER STONE SET RING

CAR PARK There is an on site car park at the Barn. Please understand that the car park fills up quickly on event nights so we advise patrons to arrive early to ensure a parking space. Our car park attendants are all volunteers who kindly donate their time. We ask patrons to respect our volunteers and cooperate with them if the car park is busy.

ADVANCE BOOKING RECOMMENDED Tickets to our events are cheaper when booked in advance. We encourage advance ticket purchasing to avoid disappointment. If tickets are still available for events they will be sold at the Box Office half an hour before the performance.

Monday 31 August @ 10am - 5pm WORKSHOP In this full day workshop, you will learn how to make your own silver stone set ring under tuition by professional jeweller & silversmith Megan Falconer. You will have the opportunity to pick from a selection of cabochon stones before being shown how to create a setting for your stone and solder it onto a silver ring. Please bring a packed lunch for our break.

Ticket prices include a booking fee where applicable.

WORKSHOPS The Barn reserves the right to cancel workshops that are undersubscribed. To ensure your place on our workshop programme please book in advance. Booking registration ends one week prior to the sessions starting. REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS We do not offer refunds unless the event is a sell-out and we are able to re-sell your tickets to someone on the waiting list. If we manage to re-sell your tickets, you will be refunded the cost of the tickets, minus the booking fee. We are not able to accept returned tickets for performances on the door. In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the venue or artists/ performers, all sales will be refunded including the booking fee.

CONCESSIONS Concession means anyone who is claiming benefits or unemployed, students in full-time education, senior citizens, and under-18’s.

FOOD AND DRINK The Barn’s bar opens half an hour before the show and serves a delicious selection of wine, beer, spirits, and soft drinks. Our bar is run by our friendly volunteers. The bar is cash only - the nearest cash point is 5 minutes away at the Tesco store.

Children aged 2 and under go free, except where shows are specifically for younger children. Access assistants will not be charged for accompanying a person with a disability.

Buchanan’s Bistro serves food and is located next to the Barn. Please contact the Bistro directly for details or to book a table on 01330 826530 or visit their website: www.buchananfood.com

SEATING Please note that seating is unreserved. To ensure you get your preferred seat, or if you are coming as a large party who wish to be seated together, please arrive in good time. Doors open half an hour before performances are advertised to start.
