MARCH - APRIL 2019

DALLAHAN SIMON EVANS OLD BLIND DOGS CELEBRATIN SHEENA SABA DOUGLAS HAMILTON BLOOM: CHILDREN’S ARTS FESTIVAL

Happy 2019 everyone - we’re back! By the time you read this we will be nearing the completion of the first phase of our current capital improvement programme, with quite a few changes having taken place around the Barn, including the creation of a brand new entrance and reception area. We hope you like it. Our main box office will reopen to the public at noon on Tuesday 12 March but works will be continuing around the site until the launch of our new craft store (exciting!) in early Summer. Meantime there are plenty of wonderful performances, workshops and events at the Barn to entertain the whole family over the next few months. We are particularly excited to be launching BLOOM, our brand new arts festival, for children, which continues the Barn’s long standing focus on linking nature and creativity. BLOOM is guaranteed to entertain the whole family including performances from Eco Drama: The Whirlybird, Joanna Nicholson: The Starlicht Runaway and the cinematic magic of the critically acclaimed family film, Song of the Sea. For our older adventurers, we are also delighted to welcome wildlife conservationist and TV personality Saba Douglas Hamilton of Big Cat Diaries to the Barn, to share an evening of exciting wildlife tales from her family life in Kenya. Mix all of that up with exceptional comedy, music, international art and dance screenings and you’ve got a whole load of reasons to make your way along to the Barn and share in our Spring celebrations. It’s good to be back! See you at the Barn Lorraine Grant Director Funded By cover photo: Tony Whitton

DEMAIN (PG)

Showing solutions, telling a feel-good story… this may be the best way to solve the ecological, economical and social crises that our countries are going through. After a special briefing for the journal Nature announced the possible extinction of a part of mankind before the end of the 21st century, Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent, together with a team of four people, carried out an investigation in ten different countries to figure out what may lead to this disaster and above all how to avoid it. During their journey, they met the pioneers who are re-inventing agriculture, energy, economy, democracy and education. Joining those concrete and positive actions which are already working, they began to figure out what could be tomorrow’s world…

CONNECTIONS AND CONVERSATIONS: THE WORK OF NEWTON HARRISON AND JOHN NEWLING

£12, £8 Friends of the Barn

What can art contribute to climate change thinking? Join Professor Emeritus Anne Douglas and Chris Fremantle, founder of ecoartscotland, leading academics and thinkers in the field of arts and ecology, and other guests to discuss pertinent issues around declining biodiversity and climate change and to consider how artists and others respond to our ever-changing world. The event will be anchored around the work of two internationally renowned figures of arts and ecology; California based artist Newton Harrison and British artist John Newling.

Wednesday 27 March @ 7.30pm BEYOND PRESENTS COMEDY

SIMON EVANS: GENIUS

Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until now, remained thwarted. The world seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. But which filter? Hmmm…

This will be a very special event where individuals can have an intimate experience with thought-provoking works and explore through discussion, different layers of references and questions that stimulate longer contemplation. Come along and discover connections and conversations!
