Welcome to our Summer brochure. It’s been a whirlwind few months at the Barn, with some new major projects taking off and ambitious capital development plans being pursued by the team. In January we learned that we had been successful in achieving another three years of funding support from Creative Scotland, and whilst, like many others, we didn’t receive the full amount we asked for, it was welcome confirmation that the work we do here at the Barn is nationally recognised and valued. That sense of value and belonging to a wider creative community is something our Friends of the Barn group continue to work hard to build. Curious is a creative, curated supper club which invites curious patrons to view experimental work followed by a supper with the artist to discuss their work. This Curious event showcases a new work by the contemporary dancer Elisabeth Schilling. SIXFOLD takes you to the beginnings of a world, a different world, where distinctions, normally taken for granted, are yet to be drawn. You don’t have to work hard to enjoy Rouse’s music. His songs present themselves to you with an open heart, an innate intelligence and an absolute lack of pretension. Rouse was born in Nebraska, and following an itinerant upbringing he eventually landed in Nashville where he recorded his debut Dressed Like Nebraska (1998). The follow-up (Home, 2000) yielded the song “Directions” used in the film Vanilla Sky. The North Atlantic Fiddle Convention returns with another fantastic programme of events celebrating the many fiddle and dance traditions around the North Atlantic. Aboyne Cello Festival is delighted to welcome back Rebecca Gilliver, Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Cello at London’s Guildhall School of Music, after a stunning and moving recital at last year’s festival. Early success in national and international competitions led to critically acclaimed debut recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London and Carnegie Hall, New York. The Barn Salon is supported by Live Literature.
Maggie Smith stars as the charismatic teacher moulding her motley assortment of schoolgirls in her own image. This iconic film brings 1930’s Edinburgh alive through the story of one eccentric teacher and her impact on her pupils.

Our dementia friendly screenings are open to all but tailored specifically to people living with dementia and their supporters. Our classic matinees include a short interval (tea, coffee, and biscuits served by our friendly volunteers) as well as a relaxed space made more accessible to an audience living with dementia. RAINBOW SEASON To mark the first Pride celebration in the North East for over a decade, the Barn is proud to present a series of stunning new LGBT+ films this June. From 6.30pm on each screening day we will be opening our Cosy Corner and running a pop-up bar and library for patrons to relax in before the show. A selection of board games and LGBT+ literature will be available to keep you entertained before the film starts. All welcome. The Rainbow Season is created in partnership with Grampian Pride. New for 2018 is our Creative Kids Camp – a week full of creative fun including music, art and crafts and dance. Each day children will get to try two different activities led by a professional tutor as well as exploring our Wild Garden where we will spend lunchtime each day. Comprising a body of stunning drawings and prints, this new exhibition of work springs from the artist’s observations of changes in the landscape of Crathes, made over a number of years. “The year turns not in a circle but in a spiral. Each returning season is different. Changes may be small, shifting backwards and forwards or edging slowly towards a new condition. The project presents an an original vision to see how one small country can mobilise as a nation to be the first industrialised country to give back more to the global environment, which the Harrisons call the Life Web, than it consumes. Newton Harrison will return to Aberdeenshire to host a number of discussion events, both at the Barn and elsewhere in Scotland. This work will be presented at the Taipei Biennial, November 2018 - March 2019.

The images included are of the landscape, the native plants, the birds and mammals, all of which are important aspects of this internationally renowned mountain range. To complete the picture, rivers, lochs, snow, ice, weather, and man are also part of this wide-ranging show. The Barn is delighted to be working in partnership with St Margaret’s Braemar to bring this exhibition of new work to Deeside. Please understand that the car park fills up quickly on event nights so we advise patrons to arrive early to ensure a parking space. Our car park attendants are all volunteers who kindly donate their time. We ask patrons to respect our volunteers and cooperate with them if the car park is busy. ADVANCE BOOKING RECOMMENDED Tickets to our events are cheaper when booked in advance. We encourage advance ticket purchasing to avoid disappointment. If tickets are still available for events they will be sold at the Box Office half an hour before the performance. Ticket prices include a booking fee where applicable. Gift Vouchers are available. CONCESSIONS Concession means anyone who is claiming benefits or unemployed, students in full-time education, senior citizens, and under-18’s. Children aged 2 and under go free, except where shows are specifically for younger children. Access assistants will not be charged for accompanying a person with a disability.
WORKSHOPS The Barn reserves the right to cancel workshops that are undersubscribed. To ensure your place on our workshop programme please book in advance. Booking registration ends one week prior to the sessions starting. REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS We do not offer refunds unless the event is a sell-out and we are able to re-sell your tickets to someone on the waiting list. If we manage to re-sell your tickets, you will be refunded the cost of the tickets, minus the booking fee. We are not able to accept returned tickets for performances on the door. In the event of a cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances relating to the venue or artists/ performers, all sales will be refunded including the booking fee. FOOD AND DRINK The Barn’s bar opens half an hour before the show and serves a delicious selection of wine, beer, spirits, and soft drinks. Our bar is run by our friendly volunteers. The bar is cash only - the nearest cash point is 5 minutes away at the Tesco store.
SEATING Please note that seating is unreserved. To ensure you get your preferred seat, or if you are coming as a large party who wish to be seated together, please arrive in good time. Doors open half an hour before performances are advertised to start.
