WELCOME We are celebrating the arrival of Summer at the Barn with a fresh new look for our brochure and another full and fabulous programme of performances, talks, exhibitions, workshops and community projects to share with you. If you haven’t visited the Barn before, now is the time we can promise you a great day, evening or weekend out! June gets off to a flying start with National Theatre of Scotland who bring us their much lauded performance of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart. Laughter and observational satire are guaranteed courtesy of all-star comedians Fred MacAulay and Seann Walsh, and more fantastic musicians and singers will call our stage home for the night - including the return of Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble, folk giants Blazin’ Fiddles and Talisk, and classical virtuosos the Brodick Quartet.

This summer also sees the launch of SOURCE - a new festival of globally inspired music, film, food and workshops. Headlining the weekend is our cover star and Mercury Music Prize nominee ESKA, who’s lyric and vocal style fuses folk, soul and jazz, winning major music industry fans such as Grace Jones, Gilles Peterson and Jamie Cullum. Source will also feature the explosive jazzfunk sounds of Sons of Kemet, who join us in Banchory fresh from WOMAD. Make sure you get your tickets now, and make it a summer weekend to remember. With a new talks programme, exhibitions, workshops, films, dance, live screenings and family events on top of all this, there really is only one place to be this summer. See you at the Barn! Saturday 4 June @ 2.30pm PUPPET STATE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

LEAF BY NIGGLE BY JRR TOLKIEN In 1939 Tolkien was despairing of ever bringing his great work The Lord of the Rings to a conclusion. One morning he woke up with the story Leaf by Niggle complete in his mind and wrote it down. This poignant story, about an artist on a curious journey, is often seen as an allegory of the writer’s own creative process and life. Surrounded by ladders, bicycles, easels and heirlooms, Richard Medrington (Jean from The Man Who Planted Trees) recounts Tolkien’s miniature masterpiece, with soundtrack by Karine Polwart and MJ McCarthy. Suitable for everyone aged ten and over. With thanks to the Tolkien Trust.

HAMLET (12A) (LIVE SCREENING)

Hamlet has the world at his feet. He’s young, wealthy and living a hedonistic life studying abroad. Then word reaches him that his father is dead. Returning to Denmark, he finds reality utterly changed, his certainties smashed and his home a foreign land. Struggling to understand his place in a new world order, he faces a stark choice: submit, or rage against the injustice of his new reality.

Wednesday 1 June @ 7.30pm NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND:

THE STRANGE UNDOING OF PRUDENCIA HART

Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

Pull up a chair and whet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on… One wintry morning Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, sets off to attend a conference in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Inspired by the border ballads - and delivered in a riotous romp of rhyming couplets, devilish encounters and wild karaoke - Prudencia’s dream-like journey of self-discovery unfolds among and around the audience.

FILM: IONA (15) (2016)

FILM: HECTOR (15) (2015)

Aberdeen-born Scott Graham’s Iona is the perfect start to our Scotland in Focus Season. It was met with critical acclaim as the Closing Night Film at Edinburgh International Film Festival (2015).

Starring Peter Mullan, Hector looks at a wandering homeless man as he heads south to London from Glasgow for his annual pilgrimage to a Christmas shelter. Along the way, the story of how his comfortable life vanished into vagrancy emerges.

Iona and her son go to a holy island to hide from a violent crime. As her son seeks forgiveness for his crime, Iona comes to terms with her lack of faith. A striking and enthralling drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Inner Hebrides island of Iona.

“The effect is a film that leaves you with a lingering glow about the warmth of human relationships, and their inspiring ability to endure and flourish even under the saddest of circumstances.” - The List

Based on Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of the poet Werther’s hopeless love for Charlotte, who is committed to another man. The music is full of lyrical beauty, passion and emotional fervour, - small wonder that Werther is often considered to be the composer’s finest work. The Royal Opera’s Music Director Antonio Pappano returns to conduct film, theatre and opera director Benoît Jacquot’s classic production. Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo stars as Werther, alongside Joyce DiDonato, who sings her first Charlotte (one of the great French mezzo roles) in this staging.

May through Summer

In May our Wild Garden was transformed into a woollen wonderland filled with an array of yarn creations to celebrate Voluntary Arts week. Over 300 school children took part as well as community organisations, craft groups and individuals who donated objects that were lovingly crafted and full of imagination. Over the next few months we welcome visitors to our display which is nestled behind the Barn in our wild garden. Our garden is a place filled with beautiful flora, fauna and wildlife and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteer gardeners. Fun for all the family this summer, you can take part in activities such as a woolly treasure hunt that is downloadable from our website or available from the office. You can also take part in a yarnbombing day on the 2nd July, where we will grow our woolly garden by adding new items and using knitted squares to bring to life objects in the garden. Don’t forget to share your photos and connect on Facebook and Twitter using #woollenwoods Visit our website for more details.
