BARN PICKS I’m really looking forward to seeing work by one of my favourite contemporary Scottish artists, Toby Paterson, as part of the ‘Slow Motion’ exhibition in February. I’m really pleased with our programme for children and families. MiniFest is coming back in April and is packed full of performances, workshops, drop in activities and films for children from 6 months - 12 years. We also have new Family Fun Days which are yet another opportunity to hang out at the Barn all day! Heather | Programming Manager I saw Jenna Watt’s Faslane at the Edinburgh Fringe. It is a witty and illuminating introduction to the debate over the renewal of Trident. Winner of a Fringe First Award and the Summerhall Lustrum Award, and recipient of very well deserved 5-star reviews, this show is a stirring and powerful piece of political theatre from one of Scotland’s most exciting theatre makers. Jennifer | Programming Manager

What would you do to earn some cash? Steal a neighbour’s dog and hold it for ransom? Rob a bank? Well if you are Jerry Lundegaard you’d probably hire two guys to kidnap your wife to extort your rich father in law. Fargo is possibly the Coen Brothers’ darkest film. An unusual crime caper that will really make you laugh out loud. One of my favourite films to date and those accents... Great ‘true story’. Graeme | Digital Learning and Engagement Officer I’m looking forward to the activities we have planned for outdoors including Fresh Art - our brand new children’s art programme that uses the Wild Garden as inspiration to create new artworks. It’s always great fun to see children exploring the garden for the first time. Linzy | Learning and Engagement Officer I’m definitely going to watch the Exhibition on Screen I, Claude Monet, about the life and work of impressionist artist Monet, who painted artworks full of sunshine but had a much darker personal life. The Exhibitions on Screen are very entertaining films in itself, but also the perfect opportunity to brush up on your art history knowledge. Nina | Marketing Manager

PETER MORRISON

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY:

Peter Morrison’s performance of ‘Broadway and beyond’ is a lighthearted mix of popular songs and duets from the West End shows, musical treasures from the worlds of operetta and opera and of course, a wee bit of ceilidh for good measure. His International baritone son Richard and actress/ singer daughter Jackie are joining him on stage. The evening is presented in support of Banchory based charity Forget-Me-Not Club - which provide invaluable support to those living with and caring for people with dementia.

Rob and Cathy are looking forward to reclaiming their own lives now that their daughter Nicola is grown-up and settled; but looming over them is a threat that could rip the future apart for all three of them. Descent explores what happens as they try to hold on to each other – and themselves – in the face of early onset dementia. Descent doesn’t flinch from the despair and heartbreak they face – but it also celebrates the courage, the hope and the humanity they bring to the fight.

JULIUS CAESAR (12A) (LIVE SCREENING)

SHAPER/CAPER

Shaper/Caper will be working on their new production, Self/ish, a story told through live and digital experiences that explores what it’s like for a young person to ‘come out’ in the 21st Century. The narrative, supported by a research study by W.D. Hamilton in 1971 on animal behaviour, follows a young man called Ishmael as he ‘comes out’ during his sexual awakening. Self/ish examines how the UK’s legislative landscape has changed over the past 50 years and explores whether or not societal attitudes have shifted at the same time. The protagonist’s story is drawn from verbatim transcriptions of interviews with LGBT young people around the world through partnerships with the It Gets Better project and the Trevor project based in LA and LGBT Youth Scotland.

In addition to our performances, events and learning programme, the Barn supports a variety of national artists to develop new works through our Artist’s Residency programme. We also encourage creative Academic research partnerships, and have a strong working relationship with both the universities in Aberdeen. We are supporting the following artists over the next few months:

ABIGAIL SINAR AND ELLIE GRIFFITHS

Thanks to generous funding from Youth Arts Collective North East, classical musician Abigail Sinar and Theatre maker Ellie Griffiths will be working in residence at two special developmental nurseries in Aberdeen for two months. Working closely with the children and staff they will deliver high quality arts experiences, exploring music and movement in a variety of ways. They hope to create a toolkit that will be shared widely for practitioners working in early years and SEN settings.

JOHN NEWLING

Continuing his residency at the Barn, John Newling will further explore elements introduced and installed during his Soil Lab week at the end of last year. For the last year the artist has been writing short letters to Nature. The ‘Dear Nature’ letters are reflections and questions about the state of Newling’s relationship with Nature. Can one partner really make amends for such unreasonable behaviour? Can an irretrievable breakdown be avoided? What is the postal address for Nature anyway? All will be revealed as Newling constructs these letters as hand written, embroidered and printed texts.

ELAINE REID

Writer Elaine Reid will be leading our community project FLOURISH - encouraging the community to start writing outdoors in our wild garden. She will work with various groups as well as develop her own response in order to create a word art installation that will be open to the public to visit at the start of summer. Elaine will be leading a series of workshops and there will be plenty opportunities for people to get involved. Visit our website for more details.

SOUND SYMPHONY PROJECT

Aberdeenshire-based theatre artist Ellie Griffiths will be collaborating with award-winning singer and composer Verity Standen and award-winning cellist and performance maker Greg Sinclair to develop ideas for a new immersive theatre show for young people on the autistic spectrum. This residency involves a week of explorations with live music and creating relaxed listening spaces during a residency at a local special school. The artists will use their time at the Barn to compose a beautiful and surreal symphony mixing live cello music, object sounds and human voice based on the interest and needs of the young people, who they will invite in to give them feedback.
