Friday 27 October @ 2pm MELANIE JORDAN & CAITLIN SKINNER IN ASSOCIATION WITH GUNSHOW THEATRE:

Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem and reworked by Alexei Ratmansky from Petipa’s exotic 19th century classic, this miracle of the repertoire is one of the Bolshoi’s most lavish productions. Complete with a magnificent awe-inspiring shipwreck and dramatic scenery, this grand romance allows enough dancing for nearly the entire company and made especially for those who seek miracles in theatre.

In a big, grey, busy city there’s loads of space. You can jump across rooftops and meet new people every day. But the big city can be lonely too and it can be hard to find your place. When Mel and Emma meet in the big grey city, something is different and they find themselves on a neon adventure that they never expected. A poignant and playful show without words for children and families about two women who meet, get stuck together with elastic and despite their best efforts, fall in love.

FILM: WHISKY GALORE! (PG) (2017)

SHAPPI KHORSANDI

Whisky Galore! has been raising laughs for nearly 70 years. Compton Mackenzie’s popular 1947 novel inspired an unforgettable Ealing comedy in 1949 and now a brilliant new movie which shows off Scotland at its best. Based on the true story of the sinking of the SS Politician off the coast of Eriskay in 1941 and the subsequent seizing of thousands of bottles of whisky by locals, Whisky Galore! is a celebration of a nation’s love of the water of life.

‘OH MY COUNTRY!’ From Morris Dancing to Morrissey. Iranian born Shappi is celebrating the fortieth anniversary of her arrival in Britain. She’s reclaiming patriotism, sending a love letter to her adopted land. Star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, Have I Got News for You and Q.I, she is back with a brand new show. She has whip-crack jokes and is effortlessly funny as she handles every subject with a razor sharp wit, softened only by her deliciously mischievous delivery and endless charm.

Did you know that we will soon have the boat called ‘Bella’, which was used in the remake of the film, in the Barn’s Wild Garden? Unfortunately it will arrive without the whisky! Two atheist sons of clergymen are on a quest to find out how we disagree with someone we love. Our Fathers is a new play inspired by Father and Son, Edmund Gosse’s Victorian memoir about growing up in an evangelical Christian family and realising that he couldn’t share his father’s beliefs. When his own clergyman father suggested he should read the book, Nicholas Bone assumed it would reveal something about their own relationship. As he combs the book for clues, Rob Drummond, another son of a clergyman, is also looking for answers to a big question of his own.

MR MCFALL’S CHAMBER WITH PETER WHELAN (BASSOON)

Mr McFall’s Chamber has built up a reputation for excellent music-making and offer concertgoers a genuinely different and exciting live experience. The programme includes music for bassoon and strings. The English poet, John Keats, favourite instrument was the bassoon and he used to entertain his friends at parties with his imitation of the instrument. Jeremy Thurlow’s Blithe Wine takes this association further, painting various aspects of Keats’ character – ebullience, melancholy, romance, drunken fun – in six movements for bassoon quintet. Keats’ favourite instrument is further explored in works including three solo etudes, as well as in a recently-composed duo for bassoon and viola by the Scottish composer, Edward McGuire.

BREATHE: MOVEMENT AND WRITING WORKSHOPS (50+)

Tuesdays 31 October, 28 November, 12 December 1.30pm - 4pm These workshops are a collaboration between choreographer Mhairi Allan and WriterIn-Residence Elaine Reid. They combine movement, writing and imaginative play and draw upon the words placed in the Wild Garden of the Barn. Beginning with the technique of free writing, and simple improvisational movement tasks we will explore the spaces both inside and outside the Barn (weather permitting), creating writing and movement as individuals and as small groups.

Since May 2017 our well-being project FLOURISH has offered many opportunities for the community to get involved with writing and other creative activities centred around our Wild Garden. Many poems have been written that will form part of an Exhibition in March 2018 alongside our Writer in residence Elaine Reid’s work created during the year.

Workshops are playful and supportive and require no previous writing or dance experience - just a wish to experience the joy of movement and your own imagination.

There is still a chance to get involved by taking part in the following workshops. Workshops are free but need to be booked in advance.

Free - booking essential

LABYRINTH WALKING & WRITING WORKSHOP

CONNECT AND CREATE

Monday 30 October 1.30pm – 4pm This workshop with writer and labyrinth facilitator, Elaine Reid, combines the wellbeing aspects of labyrinth walking with writings. This ancient symbol has been in use for over 4,000 years and has been described as: “…a path of prayer, a walking meditation, a watering hole for the spirit and a mirror of the soul” – Lauren Artress. Spending time walking the labyrinth allows you space to slow down and simply be. Elaine will guide you on how to walk and provide space and inspiration to write in order to further reflect on your experience of walking her 24-foot indoor canvas labyrinth.

VISUAL POETRY WORKSHOP

Saturday 25 November 10am - 3.30pm Join Elaine Reid and Fenneke Wolters-Sinke for a day of combining visual art and poetry. You will learn how to use pages from old books to create new poems (Found Poetry). You will then be guided on how to add a visual treatment to erase the unwanted text from the page to create a visual poem (Erasure Poetry). No previous writing experience is necessary as this workshop emphasises experimentation and creative play.

Free - booking essential

ARTISTS’ SUPPORT PROGRAMME

As part of the Barn’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of artists in Scotland, we offer a year-round programme of residencies, commissions, research and CPD opportunities.

RESIDENCIES

The Barn is supporting the following artists over the next few months

REGIONAL MICRO RESIDENCIES

ELAINE REID // WWW.ELAINEREIDWRITING.CO.UK

The programme includes a number of funded Micro Residencies ring-fenced for Aberdeen/ Aberdeenshire-based artists, wishing to undertake periods of research, develop their practice or project idea in a supportive environment.

During her FLOURISH residency, Writer and Artist Elaine Reid will be writing in response to the Wild Garden at The Barn and the wider local environment, looking at the ways in which we benefit from the experience of being in nature and in community with one another. She will also explore issues around the use of boundaries and the creation of sacred space for ourselves and the communities we live in – and how these can help us to flourish more fully. She will be combining this writing with the visual elements of her practice to create a new series of visual poems.

Visual artist Holly Morton was our first recipient of Micro Residency support during August.

HOLLY MORTON //CARGOCOLLECTIVE.COM/HOLLYMORTON Holly Morton is a visual artist inspired by artificial and natural light, working with its immaterial and ephemeral qualities. By harnessing light as an artistic medium, her work focuses on humanity’s behavioural and perceptual development in conjunction with the shift from natural to artificial light since the late nineteenth century. It also explores the impact of electric light on human consciousness, drawing attention to the evolving dependent relationship between society and artificial light.

NEWTON HARRISON // WWW.THEHARRISONSTUDIO.NET

The Barn is delighted to be working with internationally acclaimed artist Newton Harrison, who along with his wife Helen Mayer, has been a leading figure in global arts & ecology since the 1960’s. Newton and members of his team from the Centre for the Study of the Force Majeure in Santa Cruz, California, made their first trip to Aberdeenshire in August to begin their work exploring the impacts of climate change on our local environment, focusing initially on the catchments of the Dee and Don rivers.

During the micro-residency, Holly explored daylight and its interaction with exterior and interior space, architecture and surface. Working with photography and video and materials such as wood, metal, Fresnel lenses, plastics, and mirrors, she created sculptural and experiential works outdoors and indoors. Holly’s process involves reacting to the way in which light interacts with surrounding structures and buildings, concentrating on window openings, walls and floor surfaces. She focussed on capturing colourful reflections, refraction and absorption of light, therefore further developing her creative practice through kinetic installation, moving image and sculpture.

JENNY STURGEON AND INGE THOMSON

Northern Flyway, a new body of work by Jenny Sturgeon and Inge Thomson, explores the connection between people and birds. The performance will incorporate birdsong, vocal and instrumental mimesis and new lyrical material as well as a lush visual skyscape of flocks, skeins and murmurations. Written and performed by Jenny and Inge, Northern Flyway will also feature vocal sculptor Jason Singh, and flautist and piano player Sarah Hayes.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Barn is seeking applications for the second of our Micro Residencies of 2017/18 on 10 - 12 January (3 days).

Humans have always looked to the birds. In mythology, they are carriers of souls, messengers to the gods, our familiars. In ecology, they are our measure, our meter, they mark the seasons. The work explores themes of migration and movements of birds and humans, resulting in a powerful and resonating new work.

The deadline for applications is; Monday 30 October @ 12noon Applicants will be informed of decisions by Monday 6 November Please visit the Learning section of our website for more information.

The team will be in residency at the Barn during mid January. Northern Flyway will premier on Saturday 20 January, followed by a Q&A session with the Northern Flyway team. Co-commissioned by the Barn.
