WE HAVE A NEW WEBSITE!

www.thebarnarts.co.uk This summer we are delighted to share the final part of the Barn’s brand new look with you - a wonderful new website full of images and accessible information about our work, projects and resident artists, which make the Barn, and Banchory, such a vibrant place to be. I hope you enjoy using the new site and, of course, booking tickets for many of the exciting events you’ll find inside this brochure. We couldn’t have achieved these developments without the generous support of our business sponsors OpenBoxDesign, who created our striking new logo, and Hampton Associates who have worked closely with us to produce a new image-rich website that will help build the Barn’s online audiences. A special thanks also to our long-standing sponsor (and neighbour!) BuchananFood, whose in-kind support underpins our annual programme of Barn fundraising events. Remember to check out their pre-show food offers which are the perfect start to a great night out at the Barn.

FILM: THE PRINCESS BRIDE 30 YEARS OLD SEASON (PG) (1987)

THE LITTLE UNSAID

Recent winners of the Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award for boundary-pushing new music creators, The Little Unsaid leave audiences emotionally rapt with a live show that’s been described as ‘a thumping depth of passion, recalling the intensity and melancholic overtones of Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen’.

Along the way, she gets kidnapped, he gets killed... While home sick in bed, a young boy’s grandfather (Peter Falk) reads him a story called The Princess Bride. A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, the Princess Bride is still winning hearts of all ages 30 years on.

With songwriting that embraces elements of electronica, folk, jazz and alt-rock, the 2017 album Imagined Hymns & Chaingang Mantras is fresh, vibrant and elegantly crafted... a thing of beauty. £10, £8 conc seated

RESIDENCIES In addition to our performances, events and learning programme, the Barn supports a variety of national artists to develop new works through our Artist’s Residency programme. We also encourage creative Academic research partnerships, and have a strong working relationship with both the universities in Aberdeen. We are supporting the following artists over the next few months.

ELAINE REID // WWW.ELAINEREIDWRITING.CO.UK

During her FLOURISH residency, Writer and Artist Elaine Reid will be writing in response to the Wild Garden at The Barn and the wider local environment, looking at the ways in which we benefit from the experience of being in nature and in community with one another. She will also explore issues around the use of boundaries and the creation of sacred space for ourselves and the communities we live in – and how these can help us to flourish more fully. She will be combining this writing with the visual elements of her practice to create a new series of visual poems.

ANNA PORUBCANSKY // WWW.COMPANYOFWOLVES.ORG.UK

Anna Porubcansky is a musician and performer whose training includes classical, traditional and choral singing, natural voice and vocal anatomy (Kristin Linklater, Roy Hart Theatre, Alexander Technique). She is co-artistic director of Company of Wolves, and works as a music director, live sound designer, and voice coach, where her primary focus is on the relationship between voice, breath, movement and body.

JOHN NEWLING // WWW.JOHN-NEWLING.COM

Over his 3yr residency with us at the Barn, John Newling has produced an astonishing suite of public and gallery-based works. For information on the full range of John’s projects please visit our website. In early May, John returned to the Barn to present 3 sign-based works which he carried along paths and roadsides in Banchory. The large steel signs carry the phrases: Be kind Be needed Be loved Newling stopped at various points on his walk to give the sign and the contextual situation of where he has stopped a chance to talk with each other; another kind of letter. “It seems like a self-evident truth that we live in unsettled and bewilderingly complex times. It feels like there is a building up of anger and frustration in many places. I wanted to make a work that seeks to momentarily deflate and re-enter this sense. I wondered how it may be to see a large sign that read “Be Kind” or “Be Needed” or “Be Loved”, being moved and positioned in the streets of a town where I have experienced these essential humans traits. My hope is that the fleeting glance of someone carrying or positioning one of the three signs, will momentarily cause a quiet fracture in their thinking; folding their day to day anxieties within an essential refection and thought.” John Newling, May 2017

Anna’s residency at the Barn is part of a larger project about a woman’s relationship with herself – a cracked mirror of archetypes that somehow make a whole being. Mother, lover, daughter, whore. Who is she really? Which shadows dominate, which submit? And how do they manifest themselves, in body, word and mind? During Anna’s time at the Barn, she will begin to dig into these questions by using and integrating live music composition, confession, dystopian fiction, poetry, fairy tales, pornography, and traditional songs written by women. Supported by Creative Scotland.

NEWTON HARRISON // WWW.THEHARRISONSTUDIO.NET

During 2017 we are excited to be collaborating with artist Newton Harrison, who, along with partner Helen Mayer, has been working at the forefront of global Arts & Ecology programmes since the 1960’s. Based at the Centre for the Study of the Force Majeure in Santa Cruz, USA, Newton will be visiting Aberdeenshire in June 2017 to begin research into the local impacts of global climate change. This work will form the centre of the Barn’s Arts & Ecology programme over the next three years.

“Be Kind, Be Needed, Be Loved” can be viewed in the Barn Gallery over the summer months before being permanently installed outside the Barn.
