Hello and welcome to our summer programme, which is packed full of entertainment, creative workshops and social opportunities for all ages to enjoy. I’m already looking forward to hearing the harmonies of the Dloko School Choir from Umlazi in South Africa, seeing Alicia Bruce’s portraits of our allotment growers develop and the chance to experience the legendary Joan Armatrading at her sell-out Barn gig. I hope our programme will get you suitably inspired too – and remember to book your tickets early to avoid disappointment! We could do very little at the Barn without the support of our many active volunteers, and we are delighted to see resurgence in our Friends group. As well as helping to support the Barn through fundraising, the Friends are a great social network, and as a member you are entitled to various priority bookings and ticket
offers. Find out how to become a Friend of the Barn, or buy Friends membership for a loved one, on page 30. You really can make a difference. Our fundraising efforts are even more vital this summer as we need to raise a pound for pound match to secure our £126,000 grant from Creative Scotland for new seating and lighting. Some of them may be considering a career in traditional music and the tour gives them a supported taste of life on the road at the same time as sharing their skills and enthusiasm with a wide audience. Working with local businesses and promoters to develop cultural tourism throughout the National Park, the Cèilidh Trail offers a unique experience. Rashiecoats is a traditional Scottish Cinderella story but there are no glass slippers, no pumpkin coaches and no fairy godmothers! Once upon a time, there was a beautiful and strong-willed princess who lived happily in her kingdom. However, she was doomed to marry a man she didn’t love, so her only option was to leave her home and search the world outside for her one true love. Saturday 9 August 3pm AIYF: Dloko School Choir The Dloko School choir comes from an impoverished school in J Section, Umlazi, a township on the outskirts of Durban, South Africa. The choir sings Zulu and gospel songs entirely from memory. They have no sheet music but “feel” music. In technical terms they are highly accomplished singers with perfect intuitive harmonies. The tour has been funded by the Iris Initiative, a Scottish registered charity created to encourage explicit consideration of values. Money earned during the tour will be donated to Dloko School. Friday 5 September 6-8pm Woodend Wood Engravers Branch Out Opening Aberdeenshire artists Mairead Amos, Fiona Hope, Marga Schnell, Emma Palmer and Linzi Russell show wood engravings from their very first prints, produced at Hilary Paynter’s Workshop in 2010, to their latest works some of which have been included in The Society of Wood Engravers Annual Exhibition. Friday 26 September 8pm Julie Fowlis Gaelic singing superstar Julie Fowlis returns to Woodend Barn to celebrate the release of her latest album – Gach sgeul (every story). Hailing from South Uist, Julie has been a standard bearer for Gaelic song over the last 10 years, appearing on TV and radio frequently as a presenter and performer. Not content with conquering the UK folk scene, Julie is now making strides across the Atlantic having recorded the main song in Disney’s Brave. Four Seasons Community Dance Summer Project One of the most exciting dance projects happening in 2014 – be part of it! In the summer of 2014, as part of the Get Scotland Dancing programme, one hundred young people from Aberdeenshire will create a new large-scale dance performance to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. The project is open to both experienced dancers and those who have little or no experience. Interested? Available between 7th and 20th July? We are looking to recruit 25 young dancers from across Deeside, with varying levels of experience, to form one of four groups who will work with internationally renowned choreographer and community dance leader Royston Maldoom, former Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre Tamara McLorg, and selected Scottish dance artists. You will then work intensively for a fortnight to create a new dance piece that will combine with three other pieces to create the finished performance. Created as part of the Glasgow 2014 Culture Programme, they will marry the North-East’s reputation for ‘four seasons in one day’ with Vivaldi’s most famous score, culminating in a performance at His Majesty’s Theatre as a prelude to the Aberdeen International Youth Festival. Woodend Barn, in partnership with Deeside Dance Centre, are leading on the project in Deeside and are looking for young dancers to take part! Projects and Performance Opportunities WOODEND BARN’S YEAR OF FOOD Throughout 2014 Woodend Barn will explore the theme of ‘Food in Life’ through various arts and education projects. It will take a close look at the role food plays in our lives. We want to investigate the role of food in bringing communities together, families together; how it sustains us, nourishes us. Woodend Barn now looks directly at a supermarket – there’s no getting away from the fact that supermarkets are a part of our food chain. How can we challenge the way they work, encouraging our communities to demand better quality food from sustainable sources.Through new commissions, community projects and a varied arts events programme we want to start answering these questions and posing new ones.

Nicola Chambury will explore this theme over lunch and stories inspired by living in Jewish and Muslim communities. We will cook a couple of Ottolenghi’s recipes and share these over a lunchtime chat. Alicia Bruce Photography Throughout 2014 photographer Alicia Bruce will help us to explore the theme ‘Food in Life’ by telling the stories of those working in allotments and documenting their growing year. Who are the allotment growers, what do they grow and how does the allotment impact on their lives? Alicia’s practice involves community collaboration and environmental stories. Seasonal Dishes Make a Bowl and Eat From It! Throughout the year, artist Hilary Duncan will hold ceramics and drawing classes for all ages. These will explore the food we eat, particularly in the context of what we can grow locally and the sustainability of what we choose in our diets. Everyone who attends a class will make a bowl or vessel out of clay. Buchanans Bistro will prepare a meal for each season and all those who have taken part in the classes will be invited to share the meal, and their stories, eating from the bowl they have made. Company of Wolves: Seven Hungers Company of Wolves will be in residence at Woodend Barn throughout 2014 developing the Seven Hungers project, a creative expedition into local communities, food producers and food outlets across Aberdeenshire; seeking and scavenging for the ways and reasons for why food is bred, butchered and brought to our tables. Creative expeditions will deliver performance workshops with local groups.
