Welcome

Sunset Song

This New Year is an exciting time to visit the Barn – we’ve been busy over the festive period improving our sound and lighting systems in the theatre, greening-up our venue, improving our signage and introducing a new creative retail space to showcase Aberdeenshire’s talented makers. We hope you like what you see! And I’m sure you’re going to like what you see inside this brochure. We have a wealth of musical talent on offer; from the vocal skills of singer-songwriter Alistair Ogilvy and Ellon’s young classical star Colin Brockie, to the energetic rhythms of folk stars RANT and John McCusker. International opera sensation Bryn Terfel, starring in The Royal Opera’s production of Boris Godunov, will also join us in Banchory via our live screenings.

But it’s not all about sitting and watching, as we have plans to get our visitors dancing, knitting, writing, designing, painting and playing music in our brand new workshop programme. From the highly anticipated return of MiniFest at Easter, to our over-50’s dance workshop with Scottish Ballet and new Take-over Tuesdays for young people, we’ve got all ages, and creative bases, covered.

Wednesday 1 June 2016 @ 7.30pm The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart National Theatre of Scotland Pull up a chair and whet your whistle for an evening of anarchic theatre, live music and strange goings-on… One wintry morning Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, sets off to attend a conference in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Inspired by the border ballads – and delivered in a riotous romp of rhyming couplets, devilish encounters and wild karaoke – Prudencia’s dream-like journey of self-discovery unfolds among and around the audience. “more vibrantly alive than any piece of theatre I’ve seen in Scotland for years” ★ ★ ★ ★ (The Scotsman). Age 14+ £13.20, £11.00 conc.

Spring/Summer Highlights We’ve lots of exciting events to keep your calendar brimming with creativity. Make sure you sign up to our mailing list or become a Friend of the Barn to be the first to hear about all our performances, workshops, exhibitions and activities. It’s tragedy and romance galore as The Royal Shakespeare Company open their new season of live screenings in June with Hamlet. We also continue our Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company screenings with Romeo and Juliet. We’re delighted to share the very exciting news that on Saturday 4 June the Puppet State Theatre Company will present Leaf by Niggle – a story by JRR Tolkien with music composed by Karine Polwart. This poignant story, about an artist on a curious journey, is often seen as an allegory of the writer’s own creative process and life. Suitable for ages 10+. Sure to add a bit of Whizz Pop, Whizz Bang to your September, we’re organising a special weekend of events to mark Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday! As well as all of this, we’ll have our usual busy programme of live performances, film screenings and workshops for children and adults. www.woodendbarn.co.uk Box Office 01330 825431
