Welcome
The Nutcracker
We’ve had an amazing summer at the Barn – from a national Creative Place Award nomination to welcoming visitors from every corner of the globe, Banchory really has felt like the place to be. We’ve also been busy putting together our lively Autumn/Winter season that promises to keep Banchory, and Aberdeenshire, on the cultural map. We’re bringing the best national talent to the Barn to light up the dark nights, with live-screenings from Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company, the Royal Opera House and Royal Shakespeare Company, the best traditional music from Rua, Aly Bain, Ale Möller and Bruce Molsky, a candlelit Medieval concert with Aberdeen Early Music Collective as well as exciting experimental performance work from Fiona Soe Paing, and Red Note Ensemble in our Curious contemporary programme. Our new Children’s festival, Mini Fest, launches in the October holidays with plenty
entertainment and activities to develop those bright, young minds. Curated by our talented resident Producers Jenny Phillips and Heather Fulton, Mini Fest promises to create a real buzz around the Barn. In the visual arts, we’ll explore the experiences of families within the North East’s International Oil community in the exhibition Home Truths, and enjoy the work of the best national makers in flock, the Barn’s popular Christmas Craft & Design fair. We take a bit of a well-earned rest over the festive season, but return with a bang in January with our famous Burns Supper on Sat 23rd. Grab your dancing shoes and get your tickets quick!

Home Truths Saturday 17 October to Saturday 14 November* Commissioned by the University of Aberdeen in partnership with Woodend Barn, Home Truths features the work of four international artists, who bring to light the human side of Aberdeen/ Aberdeenshire’s grand epic of oil exploitation that has defined the area’s identity for half a century. Who are the people who keep it going today? What are their stories? This project specifically looks into international workers and families, and explores what it means and how it feels to de-locate and re-locate from one oil location to the next – a theme of global significance in today’s work culture. An interactive area in the exhibition aims to capture our own “Banchory Stories” of this modern, family lifestyle. Featuring photography by Geneviève Guétemme and John Perivolaris, audio work by Janet Stewart and an interactive children’s corner by Vicky Gray. Tuesday to Saturday 12pm-4pm Opening Event: Saturday 17 October 12.30pm-2pm *Gallery closed Sat 31 Oct
