MAXINE MARSHALL-JONES

Maxine Marshall- Jones is a longstanding friend of Women of Purpose Ministry. A woman of God, an intercessor and a caregiver with a passion to assist those in need. Maxine was a member of The Peoples Cathedral and The Abundant Life Assembly churches. With her love for singing, she was always a member of her church's choir. While at the Abundant Life Assembly, she was also a member of the intercessors team, which met in Friendship Terrace, every Monday.

Sis. Jones loves to cook and take care of those around her. This being one of her ministries, she always had a passion to care for her pastors and their families. Maxine was not a maternal mother, however, she has raised many children with a true mother's heart. On weekends, Maxine and her friend Coral would cook, pack a picnic basket and take some of those children on bus excursions. In 1992, Maxine migrating to the U.S.A., where she picked up where she left off in Barbados. When she settled, she sought to work in all of the areas of ministry for which she did in Barbados. Aunty Maxine as she is affectionately called, became a friend of WOP Ministry through her friendship with Coral King. When she heard about the projects the ministry was seeking to undertake, she quickly jumped into action and has been assisting us with all of our projects over the years. From Back-to School, to our Food drive, however, her special contribution is to donate sleepwear and toiletries, to teen mothers when they are going to hospital. We are grateful for her faithful assistance and we salute her today.

BE PREPARED - IT WILL NOT CAUSE PAIN!

adapted from Roseann Richards Attorney-at-Law Over the last year, it has been made abundantly evident to us, the importance of being prepared with respect to our personal affairs. Where possible, it is imperative for us to address all areas in our lives and put the necessary measures in place, regardless of age. We should seek to do this, to avoid placing our loved ones in a difficult position, of making uncomfortable decisions and handling difficult matters, because we do not have our personal affairs in order. Below, we have highlighted some critical points, adapted from a presentation delivered to Women of Purpose Ministry by Attorney-at-Law, Roseann Richards. If we put our estates in order, we WILL not cause our families pain. DEED OF GIFT This should be done while the person giving the deed is still alive. You are required to do the following: Make an appointment to see an attorney Produce the conveyance and title deed, name and address Two (2) witnesses – neither of these witnesses can be a beneficiary The attorney will prepare a new conveyance. The stamp duty and property transfer taxes will apply based on the value of property. Before change of ownership can take place, ALL outstanding land tax fees must be paid up on said property. Average cost: 1% of stamp duty; 2.5% transfer tax + legal fees BANK ACCOUNTS Individual Bank Accounts The monies will be held by the bank until probate is completed. Joint Bank Accounts The surviving party will acquire all monies on the account. In the case of an AND account, the monies will be released after probate is completed, given that this type of account requires the signature of all parties on the account. However, with an AND/OR account, the bank can facilitate any changes requested by the surviving party on receipt of the death certificate, given only one signature is required for the release of funds. INSURANCE POLICIES Life insurance benefits are typically paid when the insured party dies. Beneficiaries file a death claim with the insurance company by submitting a certified copy of the death certificate. If the beneficiary is listed as “The Estate”, the funds are released on completion of probate.

PREPARING A WILL Testator: Someone who writes and executes (signs) a will. Executor: The person named in a will, and appointed by the probate court after the will-maker's death, to wind up the affairs of a deceased person. The testator must be of sound mind – bring evidence of letter from a doctor The testator lists all accounts, investments, policies, assets or belongings they wish to distribute and names the beneficiary of each. The last will is what matters and precedes any other. Residuary clause/estate – will go to whosoever will. All property subject to a will that isn't given away specifically in the will. Often, a will leaves certain valuable items to named beneficiaries and then "the rest and residue of my estate" to another beneficiary. Where there is no will – it is intestate. Section 48-56 of the Succession Act tells you how an estate is to be distributed if there is no will. AFTER DEATH The probate starts and is overseen by the Executor. In the absence of a will, the court can appoint an executor. (The registry is located on the ground floor of the Supreme Court building) 2 advertisements must be placed in the daily paper. (There is a cost associated with all advertisements) The date of last the advertisement must appear in the official gazette The attorney then prepares an affidavit These steps should be taken before three (3) years, otherwise, it will have to explained to the court. NEXT OF KIN Power of Attorney ·You can give someone the legal authority to act for you with a document called a Power of Attorney. If you give a Power of Attorney, you are called the principal and the person you give it to is called the agent or the attorney-in-fact. ·Someone to take on responsibilities that you are unable to. Receivership This is done through the high court via an application to become a receiver. Must be accompanied by a medical report. Must produce evidence of blood relation e.g. birth, marriage Produce affidavit of kindred and fortune must be known and informed An affidavit of all assets and liabilities Access will then be granted to manage the affairs Medical reports must be produced to the court every six months Seek expert independent advice You can have a joint receiver
