ISSUE 5.0 // AUGUST 2014

“This issue is dedicated to the dreamers and the self-believers. The girls who dream of far away places and sun-kissed faces.

To our beautiful readers, As the Word on the Street graphic designer, I have the amazing task of putting together our stunning zine each month. I start each zine fresh every month, with no templates, trying to make each and every issue a unique and beautiful collection of articles, written by our talented contributors. My life over the last few months has been a little hectic to say the least. Lately I have been trying to de-clutter, get back to basics and begin to, once again appreciate the simple things in life. This month the WOTS zine has been designed as simply as possible. I want this issue to be something that our readers pick up while they lay in bed with their candles on, tuning out from the real world, avoiding uni work and munching down on your favourite block of chocolate (or two). This issue is dedicated to the dreamers and the self-believers and the girls who dream of far away places and sun-kissed faces.

The last few months have been crucial for our WOTS girls. We have developed our identity a little more, and really discovered ourselves in terms of where we want to go, and what we want to accomplish. We have huge dreams for the future, and we hope all of our beautiful readers love it as much as we do.

Crystal obsession

Written by Bronte Ryan

One thing we are obsessing over for Spring is crystals. There are so many unique colours, shapes and styles of crystal jewellery and we have hand picked the best custom crystal jewellery stores online so you can get your hands on these little gems this season! The best way to wear crystals is layering them on silver chains, in all different lengths. Here are some of our favourites: 1.

Frieda Sophie Crystal Stone Pendant

We love the different shapes and shades of these crystal pendants. As well as being beautiful, wearing Amethyst stones like these ones can help to create a calm and balanced mood. Shop the look here: www.etsy.com/au/shop/friedasophie 2. Belldezigns
This Fluorite and Silver pendant can be worn as a choker. The colours in this stone are incredible and it looks so magical. Fluorite is a beautiful stone and is meant to be protective to those who wear it. We love the unique aspect of this custom made piece. Buy this custom stone and other custom items here: www.belldezigns.weebly.com/jewellery.html 3.

Cleopatra’s Bling

We have already said how much we love Cleopatra’s Bling jewellery before but their new Spring collection is amazing! Jump on their website to check it out and definitely check out their Instagram images too. They specialise in chic, one off, chunky stone pendants and rings, cut into awesome shapes. Check them out here: http://cleopatrasbling.com/collec- tions/s-s-2014 These stone pendants are definitely set to be a massive craze for Spring and Summer 2014, the great thing is that the possibilities are endless when it comes to crystal and stone pieces, each one is an original.

Wintergarden Written by Michaela Petrofes

Brisbane’s iconic Wintergarden hosted a media-only sneak peek event featuring innovative new looks from some of their biggest brands. Mecca Maxima, Designer Archives, MJ Bale, Coach and Seed Heritage showcased their new looks to some of Brisbane’s most fashion-conscious personalities, and our blogger Mik was lucky enough to be involved. Mecca Maxima kicked off the night by transforming their beauty playground into a make-up workshop, showing us how to perfect the latest trends and styles. The lovely Mecca Maxima artist used my eyes as her canvas and showed us how to completely nail the sophisticated winged-eyeliner look, leaving me feeling like I can forever conquer all things in this field (I can’t). The night continued over at Designer Archives where we were given a quick Louis Vuitton history lesson before playing dress-up in the Carrie Bradshaw-esque wardrobe. Designer Archives gave off a New York/Sex and The City vibe and with Carrie Bradshaw being a personal fashion inspiration (yes, I know she is, sadly, a fictional character), I was truly blown away in the short but sweet moments we got to spend in the store. MJ Bale and Coach followed Designer Archives, keeping the New York vibe well and truly alive. MJ Bale showcased their amazing array of suits while Coach gave us a sneak peak at their new season that features a little twist on their very iconic look thanks to a new designer! The night wrapped up with Seed Heritage letting us shop their Spring/Summer 2014 line. Spoiler alert for those who haven’t feasted their eyes on it yet, your wallet might be hurting after you leave the store but your wardrobe will thank you forever. It was a fantastic night filled with French bubbly and delicious canapés, but the real highlight was being surrounded by some of Brisbane’s most creative minds

Verge Girl sisters Daniella and Nat brought their fashion label to our city in 2008 and it has since grown into one of Brisbane’s most loved fashion outlets. Our Brisbane contributor/blogger Mik sat down with Daniella and got the inside scoop on all things Verge Girl.

SO, how did Verge Girl start? Verge Girl started from a love of fashion and basically not being able to go shopping and find what we wanted to wear and buy. Nat and myself both studied fashion design and from what was going to be just a clothing label to sell to other stores ended up being opening up our own store and selling it all ourselves. What is the inspiration for Verge Girl? Where does it come from? Our inspirations come from everywhere: art, blogs, fashion week, models, our customers, vintage and just the people we surround ourselves with and the places we visit. What does it mean to be a “Verge Girl”? To be a ‘Verge Girl’ really means someone that is free, creative, inspired and someone that doesn’t need to wear the most expensive items to style an amazing outfit. What does the future hold for Verge Girl? The future for Verge Girl is very bright! We are looking at opening a couple of stores around Australia and, ultimately, overseas. We will be focusing on showcasing our brand and range around the world.

Music review Written by Bronte Ryan

The month coming up is going to be a MASSIVE one in terms of music news. La Roux has let her new record out of the bag and is beginning her global tour. She has been off our radar since she hit the spotlight with Bulletproof over five years ago now, but this album will be sure to put her back on the scene. WOTS had a little listen and we loved it. She has maintained her electronic, pop sound whilst inserting some maturity and attitude into the album. Another electro/pop comeback that we are currently re-falling in love with is Royksopp and Robyn. Their new collaboration is rad and we cannot wait to catch them at Falls Festival later this year. Also playing at Falls is WOTS favourites Alt-J, who are bound to put on an INCREDIBLE show! Their new album is set to hit our airwaves in a matter of days too! We couldn’t be more excited for this album if we tried, and there is so much hype surrounding it. I expect there to be some more juicy surprises like their Miley Cyrus feature track, to keep fans intrigued by their musical genius. Some big acts are touring the country in September including, Vance Joy, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Kite String Tangle. Falls Fest tickets are on sale 3rd September, and will more than likely sell out so make sure you get in quick to see Alt-J play plus Cold War Kids, The Black Lips, Safia and Jagwar Ma!

Pressed Juice Written by Elizabeth Swain

It seems there’s a new juice trend in town. Cold-pressed juice bars are popping up all over Melbourne and much like the pressed juiceries in New York and LA, both fitness freaks and foodies alike are flocking into stores. Standing above the rest, is Pressed Juice, a cute, fresh juice haven with stores all across Melbourne and Sydney. Unlike other juice and smoothie bars, Pressed Juice offers a special cold-pressed method that ensures a concentrated amount of nutrients you wouldn’t get from other techniques. This means that pressed juice is the closest thing to raw fruit and veg, providing you with optimum levels of nutrients. In short, you will not need to succumb to eating kale by the bucket-load to rake in the health benefits. The focus at Pressed Juice is to make you feel your best. Founded on the principles that we need a simple and effective way of nourishing our bodies and relieving stress from everyday life, Pressed Juices is a convenient, and chic, way to supplement your diet and work around a busy lifestyle. It’s not only the health benefits I’m enjoying though, as these beauties also add a bit of variety for the diet-conscious person while somehow managing to taste pretty darn good. I’m almost skeptical that something that is supposed to be so nourishing can be this delicious. For those craving a sweet treat, the chocolate almond milk is the way to go. Otherwise, I would recommend any juices from the Berry Glow or Zest series. Pressed Juices could very well become the alternative to coffee catch-ups. The charming lemonade-stand feel of the space and the simplistic oak design makes Pressed Juices a pretty cool spot. Special mention to the lovely staff at South Yarra who were extra patient with my indecisiveness and pretty much know everything there is to know about pressed juice. While the price might put some people off, Pressed Juices has become one of the healthy ‘treats’ I look forward to indulging in (and they also offer cleansing programs if you’re into that kind of thing). http://www.pressedjuices.com.au/
