PIZZA ARTWORK BY LILY STEAD

With June almost done and dusted, it was certainly a month for the record books – both personal and for the entire WOTS team. While I attended the Gold Coast QT Fashion Week, our beautiful editor Bronte was busy moving herself and WOTS interstate to Melbourne! While we will miss her dearly here in Brisbane, we are so excited for the opportunities she’s creating for both herself and the magazine. This issue is as fresh as the winter breezes that are finally blowing our way and I could not be more excited to finally release it to all of our lovely readers! We love you guys, happy reading!

OLIVER TANK - THE INTERVIEW - Imogen Baker

In 2011 producer and musician Oliver Tank stormed the electronic music scene seemingly out of nowhere, sending Tumblr into a fan-girl frenzy with the track ‘Last Night I Heard Everything in Slow Motion’. But like all that frenetic energy, Tank didn’t materialize from nothing. He’s spent years perfecting his craft from Sydney, his hometown and HQ and he’s building momentum. The late 2013 release of Slow Motion Music reiterates the dreamy, lullaby beats for which he’s renown. Slow Motion Music blends digital production and instrumentals with just enough raw humanity to send shivers down your spine. WOTS had a chat with OT about computer music, fashion and the future.

// 04

To get started, congratulations on the success of Slow Motion Music. What’s your favourite track from it? Thank you. ‘Different Speed’ is probably my favourite. I’ve been a big fan of Ta-ku for a long time so it was really great to finally do a track with him. I also quite like ‘Time Slows Down’… A lot of people, including your Unearthed profile, compare you to James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Boards of Canada…have these musicians genuinely inspired you or do people just draw connections between your music and theirs? I think that’s just a lot of the music I was listening to when I was getting into production. I was really influenced by those artists because that’s all I knew at the time. When I actually started making music though it ended up a bit differently and I embraced that. You can certainly hear elements of those artists in my music but I don’t really think about them anymore when I make music.

What music are you listening to at the moment? I’m really getting into Soulection and all the artists on their roster. I’m also into this rapper Lil Ugly Mane, this guy Lanks from Melbourne and WZRDKD from Mildura. Other than that I’ve just been listening to a lot of mixes so a pretty wide range of stuff. What inspires you outside of music? I really enjoying playing/watching basketball. I’m not sure if it inspires me but it’s the next most enjoyable thing for me outside of making music. I’m not great but I get a lot of enjoyment out it and it’s good exercise. Of course my family and friends give me inspiration as well.

If you could collaborate with anyone, living or dead (back from the dead, obviously, not still dead), who would it be and why? I get asked this question a lot and I always say that I’d like to produce beats for some rappers cause I think I could do something interesting and kind of different. Maybe artists like Devin the Dude, Snoop (in his prime) or Nate Dogg.

To fashion now: how would you define your look and do you think it matters at all? How important is it in the music industry to hit the right aesthetic and have you ever felt any pressure to dress/act in a way that conforms to what’s cool? I was never really heaps into fashion. I just wear what feels comfortable, usually jeans, Vans and a t-shirt. Don’t really think You’re one of a generation of musicians who get their start about it too much to be honest. When I’m performing I make sure I look presentable, but I’m not really about fashion particufrom platforms like Sound Cloud and blow up on Tumblr, etc. Do you think this has changed the way you make music/ larly and I don’t feel any pressure to be. your style/your audience? And finally, the question I’m sure everyone closes with, Sites like Tumblr, Facebook and particularly Soundcloud have what’s next for OT? really helped me reach a wide audience. I feel like I owe a lot I’m working on my album plus a few collaborations and remixes, of my success to Soundcloud and Facebook, they give artists so I’m keeping busy writing new tunes. I think its time again to a great platform to share their music and connect with fans. It redo the live show, make some changes and maybe try to add in hasn’t really changed the way I approach making music, but these sites have helped me connect with my fans on a personal some more people to keep it fresh so that’s a working progress. I’m also hoping to make it overseas later in the year to do some level and I think that’s really valuable for any artist. shows in Europe and the US, nothing locked in just yet but that’s the goal.

Winter styles from QT Fasion Week - Michaela Petrofes

Winter has finally graced our cities and brought with it some new styles for the fresh new season! There are already a number of amazing new trends and the QT Fashion Week held from May 29th until June 1st was a little sneak peak at what Australia can expect in the colder months ahead. In our previous online article we took a look at all the amazing things on display at Fashion Week, with versatile styles ranging from chic office-wear to elegant, red-carpet-worth evening gowns. With winter finally here it’s tempting to leave the house laden in warm jumpers but luckily we can trade it all in for one delicious layer - the oversized jacket. Mariam Seddiq’s collection captured this look perfectly, especially their Rousanne piece that showed off an elegant, oversized ‘cape dress’ just perfect for the workplace or a fashionable night out. Lace panels are also a trend Australia has fallen in love with and Mariam Seddiq is fully onboard with it. The label’s bridal gowns tackled this texture in the most elegant way I have ever seen. The bridal piece Clariette is an incredible, high-necked gown with subtle lace panels along both sides that would make any bride an instant jaw-dropper. While I might not be ready to incorporate a full lace wedding gown into my wardrobe any time soon, it’s certainly a look I’ll subtly introduce into my every day wear for that extra dash of wistful elegance. According to the runway, scarfs won’t be the only items to keep our necks warm this winter. The Mariam Seddiq range was stunning on its own but the pieces popped with some amazingly bold, statement neckwear. Most of their pieces had high neck-lines but this didn’t stop them showing off the stunning beaded Noshaq accessorizes. The outstanding accessories added an extra punch to the stunning yet quiet collection needed. If you’re after high-end fashion in a subtle, wearable way then this is where you want to pay attention! Trending: masculine styles for women and quirky geometric prints are both taking Australia by storm. Lucky for you, Lucid’s latest collection offered both of these. The most popular look by Lucid was a top and blouse combination that, while sporting the masculine look perfectly, still managed a softer edge with a touch of pastel purples. Lucid was also on board with the geometrical vibes and a number of their pieces show off the label’s quirkier side. Masculine cuts and geometric print are perfect for all you fellow university students out there, as it allows for us to look and feel fashionable without blowing the budget. Don’t forget though, ladies (and gentlemen), while you can shop these looks straight from the runway, you can also visit your local op shops to create these runway fashions and to add a touch of vintage to complete your outfit.

SEAFOOD & WINE FESTIVAL - BRISBANE - Dominique Pendleton

The legendary festival held on Caxton Street has certainly lived up to its reputation this year. Marking the festival’s 20th year bringing a bevy of seafood, wine and unforgettable music, the hype surrounding the festival was definitely well deserved. While most festivals have an ambience about them, and this foodie-fest ignited a true sense of inclusion and community. Crowds moved in and many people joked around in long queues, waiting with rumbling stomachs for their favourite seafood bite. I could be found nestled somewhere in the line, patiently anticipating my next mouth-watering meal. To begin the consumption orgy was a plate of freshly-shucked Coffin Bay oysters and thirst-quenching wine and craft beer to suit all palates. For a second, or third course, the festival served up seared Tasmania salmon, fish tacos, prawn pizza, Thai seafood skewers, fish burgers, calamari or Moreton Bay bugs. The festival also boasts the best steak in Brisbane for those who don’t dig seafood. And to kick on? You may have heard of the intimate little inn named Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall. Ii haven’t already been to this establishment, go there - it’s a diamond in the rough. Lefty’s is a landmark venue with a story to tell behind the intimate velvet red that marks the walls of the majestic hall. My time at Lefty’s left no lack of Southern Comfort, I was treated to an electrifying blues show by Melbourne musician Shaun Kirk - a must see performance for all those blues enthusiasts! Whether you’re a seafood fest first time veteran, make sure you save the date next year. Written and photographed by Dominique Pendleton @dpendleton Instagram

For me, moving from sunny Queensland to Melbourne was a huge adjustment in many ways, especially the temperature. I used to consider anywhere around 10˚C as freezing but I’ve learnt the hard way that it gets much worse. Part of my battle with the elements is getting used to the idea of covered shoes and wearing socks 24/7. Socks are something I rarely wore before, but now they’re my life. I hated the mundane sort you get from the clothing section of Coles though and I desperately wanted something a little bit fancy and different. It was then I discovered Odd Pears…

I first spotted them on my housemate and instantly needed to know what these fun polka bundles of joy were all about. Turns out they were made by a Queensland guy and a quirky design team based between Queensland and Melbourne.

ODD PEARS SOCKS - BRONTE RYAN

Odd Pears have sleek and stylish socks in all different colours and patterns and each set features three socks, for you to purposely mismatch. Odd socks strangely reminds me of a relationship with two people who are polar opposites but somehow fit like a perfect little glove (or sock). I talked to Brock, the owner of the Odd Pears, and he said winter is obviously their big time of year. They are constantly updating the designs and styles to keep the brand fresh. Make sure you jump on the Odd Pears website oddpears.com or their super cool Insta @oddpears for more little pieces of joy!

ARCTIC MONKEYS - THE REVIEW - Julia Sansone

505

Their song ‘505’ was one of my favourite moments. Here the arena was bathed in a cool, purple light as a gush of frosty air came through for the extremely hot and sweaty audience. It’s a classic and if you’re an Arctic Monkeys fan you can’t deny you’ve belted this song at the top of your lungs at least a million times.

The People

It’s been a few months now since I set my eyes on the incredible British band ‘Arctic Monkeys’ at Rod Laver Arena, and I can definitely say the post-concert depression is still hitting me hard. The first time I heard the Arctic Monkeys I was 12 years old. It was a Saturday morning, sitting by the kitchen bench and the ‘Crying Lightning’ music video was playing on Video Hits. Gosh I miss Video Hits. So to commemorate my 7 year-long crush on Alex Turner, finally lived out by seeing him in the flesh, here are a few of the top moments from the Arctic Monkey’s Australian tour.

The Venue

First up, I was both surprised and impressed by the intimacy of the closed-off arena for the Melbourne concert. Considering that the tickets sold out within an hour nationally, I was dumbfounded by how so many people could fit in the little area. By the end of the support acts, each seat was filled. It was an ocean of people above, with patrons standing down below, jittering of excitement to see what song the band would open with.

The Opening

OMG. Making an epic entrance, the band appeared after a period of intense waiting opening with ‘Do I Wanna Know?’. They performed a perfect mix of songs from the new album ‘AM’, their 2011 album ‘Suck It And See’ as well as some good old classics such as ‘Brianstorm’ and ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’. Alex Turner rocked his new sexy, slick look which I definitely dig but have to admit, I miss his awkward long hair and knitted sweaters at times.

Now this isn’t particularly a highlight but something I do feel like sharing. Not only was my experience of the band great but I also genuinely felt like I was in the UK seeing them live. No, Really! Every single stranger that I spoke to on the night had a British accent. The girl that served me at the bar. This lady next to me who didn’t hold back from lighting up a smoke indoors. The guy who tried to chat me up and the large group of pill popping lads who started a moshpit conveniently in front of me. Now, this was coincidence I’m sure but it sure gave me a giggle. At least the British are loyal to their roots!

The Slip-up

Arctic Monkeys have been one of the best bands I have seen live and sound impeccably similar, if not better, to their recorded albums. To me that is the sign of a good band, if they sound good outside of the editing studio. However they did experience a little slip up in the encore when Alex kind of just forgot to keep singing, or the microphone stopped working for a minute or two. Whatever reason, the crowd just laughed it off, and sung along anyway. You know a band is good when you think their slip up is good excuse just to laugh and keep singing. There’s nothing like a seeing your favourite band, and seeing everyone around you shout out the lyrics as much as you are makes you feel less of a loser for doing it too. I rate the concert a 9/10 and simply can’t wait to see them again!

The Lightshow

The stage was bannered with massive, luminescent ‘AM’ letters, which changed throughout the concert to match the mood of the song. It most definitely stood out when the arena was lit up by a beautiful shimmering light spectacular. As ‘No.1 Party Anthem’ was played. everyone’s phone was lit up in the air, swaying to ‘I Wanna Be Yours’. I bet the person who started that felt really proud. 21st century concert right here!

THIS MONTHS MUSIC REVIEW - BRONTE RYAN

This winter is proving to be quite a display of awesomeness in the musical sphere. WOTS music writer, Bronte, shares some of her favourite treasures to keep you cosy and content this cool season. I am currently loving music of the mellow and funky variety! To kick off my winter playlist is Turn Blue by The Black Keys. Its catchy beat and soulful vocals just makes me want to boogie the night away! It is no secret that WOTS are massive Lana Del Rey fans, but when we heard Brooklyn Baby it took our love to a new level. It’s also no coincidence that her and The Black Keys are both topping our list of faves, seeing as The Black Keys helped create some of the tracks featured on her new album. You can definitely hear their soulful influence. It’s much calmer than her first album and it would seem she’s grown a lot as an artist. Also if you haven’t listened to Little Dragon’s new album, get onto it! Their soothing and catchy tunes will have you bopping your head along. Our favourites are Mirror and Pretty girl. Lastly, we could not have been more thrilled to hear Alt-j are releasing a new album soon! Their first track Hunger of the Pine is so rad. It unexpectedly features Miley Cyrus and has such a great vibe. Cannot wait to hear what else they have in store. For more of the hits we dig, check out our WOTS playlist link on our website and our Spotify!
