SimplyStated When it comes to business or life, “It’s not what you can do – it’s what you will do” that ultimately decides your success or failure.
After the births of her own children and trying to balance the responsibilities of owning a business, Tanya sought a solution to the problem. And she found one. After thorough investigation and research, her answer was to build an onsite childcare centre in her office. This way both her female and male staff would feel supported, they could return to work whenever they were ready to do so, and they could bring their baby with them. Now I ask, what new mum wouldn’t want to return to a workplace with this level of insight. Unfortunately for parents, these types of familyfriendly workplaces are few and far between.
With the push on by the government to encourage more women to return to work after starting a family we introduce you to entrepreneurial boss, Tanya Titman. We love her approach to ensuring her staff feel supported when they return to the office. Tanya has absolutely no problem with retaining her staff after they give birth, as they simply bring their baby to work with them. Just imagine, no mad rush to the childcare centre in the morning or at the end of the day, no worrying about how you are going to continue to breast feed and no distance between you and your bub if they fall ill or there is a problem with them during the day.
In the end, there are really no secrets as to how employers can achieve higher numbers of qualified women who have given birth returning to the workplace. Provide a caring, loving and secure space with fully trained childcare workers within close proximity to their workstation, and new mums and dads will be clocking back on in droves. I suspect that with a supportive workplace offering an onsite childcare centre, many parents would not even take the full 18 weeks leave currently on offer from the government.
So where do you find a boss with this much empathy? One who is willing to look outside the box when it comes to valuing and retaining staff and one who totally understands the demands and stress of balancing work and life responsibilities? Well, as in the case of so many great business ideas women come up with, it’s about having walked the path and experienced the challenges yourself.
With all the drama the Federal Government encountered around funding their Paid Parental Leave scheme, perhaps common sense and some in the trenches experience might help. If they used successful case studies from the private business sector and looked outside the box, they too might see the dollar value in providing support, guidance and financial incentives to businesses willing to build safe

InBrief MUMPRENEURS often balance family and work by basing their businesses at home. A recent Roy Morgan report revealed that mums who run their own businesses account for 16% of the Australian small business sector. Half of all female small business owners with children were solo operators and 81% of them work from home. WOMEN are more likely than men to seek a divorce because they get frustrated that their partners don’t pull their weight when it comes to housework and childcare. According to a recent survey women initiate divorce in 69% of cases. By comparison there is no statistical difference between men and women initiating a break-up if they were just dating or living together. JOB satisfaction has increased slightly in Australia, from 67% to 70% according to the quarterly Randstad Workmonitor. The Northern Territory had the biggest increase, with 65% of its workforce satisfied in their roles. South Australia remains the most satisfied state (77%), even though it saw a 2% decrease. Western Australia remains one of the least satisfied states (64%), even with a 9% increase in satisfaction. THE glass ceiling is still a reality for Australian women with new data showing just 17% of chief executives are female. A Gender Indicator report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that in some industries such as mining and financial services the situation is dire with only 4% of women holding chief executive positions. LINES between working hours and private time are blurring in Asia Pacific (APAC) countries, with 65% of workers saying their employer expects them to be available outside regular office hours. This compares to 57% globally and 51% in Australia.

GENDER pay inequity continues to explode. Recently released Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show the pay gap at 20.8% nationally for total weekly earnings. While no industry is immune, the figures indicate that some industries are significantly poorer performers than others with a 30.6% gap in financial and insurance services, 29.6% in healthcare and social assistance, 27.4% in renting, hiring and real estate and 25.6% in construction. DATA from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor indicates the proportion of young Aussie entrepreneurs fall short of those in the United States. Australia ranks far behind the US with only 8.7% of 18–24 year olds involved in setting up or owning a new business compared with 13.5% in the US. MODELLING shows that 63% of single women will still not be retiring comfortably by 2055 even when super, pension payments and other savings are combined. The gender pay gap is a significant problem. Women’s lower earnings and disrupted work patterns compound into a much larger gap of 47% in retirement savings. Without substantial structural reform in a number of areas, our retirement income system will continue to fail future generations of women. NEW research indicates that most Australians are seeking more flexible working conditions but most are afraid to ask for them. The report also dispelled the myth that it is mothers with young children who were looking for flexible workplaces. It revealed that men (65%) were more likely to have flexible working conditions than women (59%). BOOMERPRENEURSHIP is a growing trend with tech savvy seniors leading the way. Almost 35% of all new businesses in Australia are led by entrepreneurs in their senior years. Researchers at Swinburne University of Technology and Queensland University of Technology interviewed more than 400 people aged over 50 and found they were the fastest-growing segment of entrepreneurs of all new firms in Australia. LUSH is the winner in a recent survey that involved ‘secret shoppers’ visiting 265 retail outlets and assessing brands on six criteria. Lush Fresh Homemade Cosmetics was named as one of four retailers that secured a perfect score for customer service. Lush joins Apple, Nespresso and The Body Shop in achieving the highest possible score.

NEW RESEARCH reveals just how diverse the sharing economy has become around the world, and the potential for growth within Australia. The sharing economy is much more than just Uber and Airbnb. According to the research, the five most popular categories of the sharing economy are buying, hiring, sharing, borrowing and swapping goods. Money lending, tasks and car-based transactions are the most common among new startups. Before too long there will be barely any sectors that won’t be impacted by the efficiencies of the sharing economy and peer-to-peer online platforms. SMALL business owners seem relieved with the change in government leadership with Malcolm Turnbull now leading the country. A recent survey of 1,216 small to medium sized businesses conducted by Service Seeking reveals some insight into current business confidence and economic sentiment in the small business sector. • E mployment: Over 60% of businesses confident with Turnbull expect to increase their number of employees over the next 12 months, signifying a potential improvement in the nation’s employment rate. •T echnology: 64% of SMEs worried about the impact of technology on their business are more confident with Turnbull as leader. •N ew business: 49.8% of respondents indicated they would encourage other entrepreneurs to set up a new business with Turnbull as leader.

BUILT AN ONSITE CHILDCARE CENTRE With more than half of all Australian mothers returning to work when their youngest child turns two, the demand for childcare services is rapidly outgrowing availability. Onsite childcare remains the holy grail of workplace entitlements and is mostly only available to employees of large organisations. Small business owner, TANYA TITMAN, proves it is possible for SMEs to provide an onsite childcare facility and is reaping the rewards of this investment. Successive Australian Governments have highlighted the need to improve access to affordable childcare. Because of demand, it is most difficult to find places for children under the age of two. This can be a real barrier to employees returning to work. Onsite childcare is mostly only available to employees working for large organisations so employees of smaller organisations usually miss out. However, Tanya Titman believed that it was possible for SMEs to provide an onsite childcare facility and is now reaping the rewards. Working mother-of-four, Tanya, made a major investment in her business and staff by building an onsite childcare facility in her Upper Mount Gravatt offices in 2007. The childcare centre is located on the same floor as the business and has two shift-working nannies on staff. Up to six children a day use

the facility. Tanya’s business currently employs 16 staff but has plans for rapid expansion. The childcare service is available for all staff, not just mothers, and several fathers bring their children into the childcare centre. The space has a privacy room for mothers who wish to continue breastfeeding after returning to work. In addition to staff, clients are also able to leave their children in the childcare centre whilst attending meetings, seminars and workshops.
TANYA’S STORY Like many working women, taking an extensive break from her career was not a viable option. Tanya took six weeks off after the birth of her first two children and went straight back to work, juggling childcare with a nanny at home and the help of family members. She expressed breastmilk between meetings and found the whole experience stressful and exhausting.

“Whilst we comply with all safety standards and regulations, the childcare centre’s classification under Queensland legislation means our business receives no government funding and our staff cannot claim childcare rebates”, explains Tanya. “At present, staff pay 50 per cent of the centre’s operating costs and the business subsidies the rest.”
THE POSITIVES As an experienced Tax Accountant, Tanya identified that there is a provision in the tax legislation that onsite childcare facilities are exempt from fringe benefits tax. This allows

businesses to effectively offer tax deductible childcare to their staff. Anything the staff contribute to this expense can be claimed as a tax deduction. Whilst there are financial benefits for staff, the ability to visit their children throughout the day, continue breastfeeding and the associated reduction in stress (or mother’s guilt) are major drawcards. The benefits of an onsite childcare facility to the employer are also significant. In an environment where competition for experienced staff is intense, it pays to invest in services that encourage your existing staff back to work after maternity leave and that attract high quality staff to your business. “Having an onsite childcare facility creates loyalty, improves staff retention and engagement, which ultimately has a positive impact on productivity,” explains Tanya. “It’s good for the kids, their parents and the employer. Our staff Christmas parties are a sight to behold.” Tanya urges other small businesses to consider taking a similar approach. There are lots of misconceptions about investing in childcare centres but she argues that these shouldn’t stand in the way of something that benefits employer and employee alike. “A lot of small businesses think they can’t do it because of costs or they think the red tape will be too onerous. But we have proved that is not the case. We’re really trying to spread the word because we think it’s such a great solution for businesses and working women. n

“Businesswomen work so hard. They are inherently selfless, brave and often believe they have something to prove. Well, sometimes you have to forfeit a battle to win the war. Sometimes you have to just rest for a while so as to continue. It’s important.”

Cristina Re: A brand based on all things beautiful
What started with a vision and a beautiful range of DIY stationery has blossomed into one of the fairy-tale brands to emerge from Melbourne’s design scene in the past decade. Our branding reporter, Emelye Lovell, sat down with CRISTINA RE to share tales of business, beauty and being a brand icon. A truly adored design icon in her own right, the beautiful Cristina Re has expertly crafted her self-titled brand to lead the way in all manner of design industries, from fashion to beauty to tableware and of course, paper masterpieces. One need only look at her work or personal brand image to see that Cristina Re does not conform to traditional stereotypes of the successful female entrepreneur. Her long blonde hair is always flowing over her shoulders, and her headquarters more closely resemble an art gallery than a corporate office. In her formative years, Cristina’s emotional intelligence was mistakenly labelled a weakness, as she endured a maths/science dominated curriculum that placed little value on the arts. “It’s still the same. Nothing has changed. But without the great artists, where would we be?” Cristina describes herself as hypersensitive to the sensory stimuli around her. With such heightened awareness come both positives and “extremes in the negative”, but Cristina cherishes this attribute and focuses on the beauty of her environment and of her relationships with people. “I stand for what I believe in and sometimes I don’t win. But it’s not about using power or gender or control to get the most out of people; it’s about being respectful and humble.” As a young creative mind and bourgeoning entrepreneur, Cristina worked for herself right out of Design College, abandoning all logical reason in the pursuit of her vision. “It was a complete lack of fear, financial or
otherwise … I think because my parents have no fear and don’t hold back. I believe I was given a talent and it must be utilised. It’s a waste to come into this world with a gift and not use it because we’re fearful.” In regard to the instinctual fear in starting your own business, Cristina says, “Circumstances around you can stop you from being the person you’re meant to be. And you must rise above it – your insecurities, the economy, all of it. It’s not easy and everything comes with challenges and there are a million reasons not to do what you love”. Cristina acknowledges that being a woman can indeed be one of the challenges you come up against in business, though working for herself has spared her the first-hand experiences. She says of gender bias and inequality in the workplace, “I’m aware of it. It’s positive that women are speaking up”. On the expansion of her own very feminine brand empire, Cristina muses, “From the start there were no limits. I wanted to be a designer … stationery was just a canvas”. But the seemingly large product gap between paper, porcelain and potions was not a concern to the visionary designer. Cristina describes her brand as a puzzle, with the diverse offerings all fitting together as part of a bigger picture. She explains that the brand evolution was indeed a logical progression, with the paper revolving around themes of celebration, which in turn led to the development of the high tea tableware that was centred on indulgence, which logically lead to the luxurious bath and body collection. The products present one united front, all sharing the same values.
Regardless of the product, Cristina has designed her brand to elicit feelings of celebration and indulgence, of prettiness, sharing, and friendship. Despite the rapid evolution of social media and electronic communication, Cristina has managed to keep the art of paper craft and handwritten correspondence alive. “There will always be people who love tactile things … you don’t need a majority. Having diversity of relevant products equals loyalty, and with it, a certain protection from market threats.” Ultimately, the Cristina Re brand is built on beauty and a passion for art and fashion that ranks more highly than any concern for commercial success – that is simply the cherry atop a tower of cakes at high tea. n

From BANKER to BREWER How a beer lover turned her passion into money Unlikely beer enthusiast, LEIMIN DUONG, saw an opportunity to create beers to appeal to an audience beyond the traditional beer market. Leaving her job in banking, she jumped in the deep end and taught herself about brewing beer and about business. Now, two years on, her unique Strawberry Blonde beer is selling in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT and will soon be available Australia wide, with more varieties yet to come.
Since she was a young adult, Leimin has had a love of beer and after reading a travel article that mentioned strawberry beer, she made an executive decision to follow her gut and quit her corporate office job. “I was very surprised at the idea of a strawberry beer and thought it would be something a lot of other people would be interested in trying too.” This prompted Leimin to establish her own natural flavoured beer company with the goal of creating flavoured beers suitable for the Australian market. It took Leimin only 12 months from first starting the project and learning how to brew
beer to bottling her first commercial batch of Zeven Lemon Beer. Leimin, with no previous experience in brewing, taught herself to brew and began experimenting by blending fruit into beer. To quickly get up to speed, she bypassed home brewing in favour of studying the technique from textbooks and websites, and observing the commercial brewing process. Working 100+ hours a week for months, Leimin personally developed the base beer and the final recipe by studying ingredients and drawing on her knowledge of food and flavours. She also taught herself about designing, packaging and graphics to further turn her vision into a reality.

To best showcase the crisp and refreshing appeal of beer, Zeven Lemon’s Strawberry Blonde is deliberately limited in both sweetness and in fruit flavour, as Leimin’s aim was to create beers that are lightly flavoured with only juice extracted from 100% fruit. One of the main reasons people lose a sale is because they don’t listen to what their prospects actually want. So focused on the features and benefits of their products and services, sellers tend to bombard their audiences with too much information, and then wonder where it all went wrong. It may surprise you to know that the easiest way to sell and get a ‘yes’ from a prospect is by lending them your ears. Many sales people or business owners believe that in order to sell, they have to do all the talking – taking prospects through all the features and benefits of their products and services; making sure they have every bit of information available to make an informed decision. This is what the most conventional salesperson will do, and by following this old method, you are probably missing out on a substantial number of prospects. The sales process actually doesn’t require much effort – you just have to ask the right questions, open up the conversation and let the prospects do the talking! Active listening is one of the most important techniques for a salesperson or business owner. Through carrying out this process, you will: Fully understand the situation the prospect is in and what they need. You can use those things to successfully close the sale. n

Selling by listening requires that you first understand what your prospect is saying, and have the capability to respond to them with a brief overview of everything they need and how you can help them. By providing this summary you will automatically earn a positive impression, making them feel like you understand them, and that they are speaking to the right provider – one that is not there just to sell to them but to genuinely listen and help. One of the most common obstacles you will face when it comes to active listening is to not get too excited about the facts and information that prospects give you, and jump in to react mid-conversation. Keep calm and relax and let the prospect finish. Gather your thoughts during this time, but also mentally echo what they’re saying to keep focused on the information at hand. Through active listening, you will also recognise that prospects will tell you what’s important to them, through non-verbal cues. They will drop clues as to what they are thinking and how they are feeling about you and your products or services, through the words they use and their tonality. Again, it is
your job to listen and acknowledge these signs and clues, in order to win the sale. Although selling requires that you must talk in order to introduce yourself and make a pitch, it requires a lot more listening. Listen hard, listen well, listen closely and listen actively. Few people especially salespersons are naturally good listeners and it may take a lot time and effort before you are able to let go of those bad listening practices you have developed over the years. But once you do, you will see the rewards are equally significant, and you’ll be leaps and bounds in front of your competition. n

Maintaining a five star customer service rating on social media is essential for all businesses as customer complaints on social media can make or break a business. ANNA CAIRO covers why it is important to be prepared for both good and bad customer feedback. Customer service on social media particularly for business to consumer businesses (B2C) is essential. The reality is that customer service expectations have increased; customers expect more from their brands in delivering an effortless experience from the buying process to social media presence. Along with website and email, social media is now part of customer communications. But many businesses don’t do customer service particularly well on social media; some still fail to address customer complaints or simply delete the comments. As more people talk about businesses and their products and services on social media, one disgruntled customer can cause significant difficulty to a brand. There are plenty examples of brands that have mishandled customer complaints on social media. One of the earliest experiences occurred in 2009, when Dave Carroll a Canadian musician recorded a song with his band and posted it on YouTube. The video ‘United Breaks Guitars’ records his poor customer service experience with United Airlines. His attempt to obtain compensation for his broken guitar turned into a frustrating nine month negotiation. Once mainstream media reported on his YouTube clip it turned into a public relations nightmare for the airline; including the share price falling 10% within four days of the video being posted. The clip went viral with 150,000 views in a day and 15 million people
viewing it by August 2015 as it can still be viewed online. Dissatisfied customers are voicing their criticisms through social media and it is important for businesses to take notice. Customer negativity is actually an opportunity to provide exceptional service and create an impression about the business that is positive. Most damage to a brand from a social media complaint comes from the mishandling of it and the subsequent PR fiasco.
WHAT BUSINESSES ARE DOING AND MUST NOT DO: They fail to respond – When customers are upset, they want to be heard. Posting to social media is the perfect way to be heard. Brands need to think carefully before they respond and to take action quickly; most don’t. Response expectations have shifted and it is essential businesses cater to this. Having a social media policy which has procedures in place on how to respond through a social media management plan avoids issues such as responding in a PR centric way. A delayed response can create embarrassment, loss of reputation or financial impact. They fail to reach out directly to online complainers – Businesses are scared to connect with those who criticise them. To a degree this is understandable. No one likes to be criticised particularly on social media where it is public. Reaching out in a professional
manner is the one thing that needs to be done for customer service. The social media in house responder needs to be skilled at customer service not social media. It needs to be handled by someone who is used to customer complaints. It is not appropriate to get into a fight online. Instead contact the complainer publicly (so others can see you have responded), thank them for their comments, apologise (if needed) and ask for an offline conversation. The conversation needs to move from a public to a one-on-one private space where a resolution can be reached. Social media customer service is an opportunity for your business to humanise its brand. People like to connect with people not brands. So if you are engaging and connecting in the social media environment in a personal way, your social media audience will response likewise. When a complaint does arise, your audience will actually support the business because the relationship is based on mutual respect and trust. The ‘fakeness’ of social media also transfers over to the business world and unfortunately, many business owners fail to acknowledge that whatever is written on social media is real enough to be pursued by law. KATHERINE HAWES warns that everything you post on social media sites can be used against you in a court of law.
People often act differently on social media, publishing information about themselves they normally wouldn’t speak out loud in order to project a positive image. Despite the often ‘fakeness’ of social media, everything you post on social media sites can be used against you in a court of law. So what should you look out for when it comes to social media law? Firstly, if it’s not legal offline it’s most probably illegal online as well.
Here are some key points to ensure you stay on the right side of the law: Loss and disclosure of confidential information – LinkedIn and other social media sites allow individuals to network and share personal and professional information with the world. However, this also allows employees of a company to upload their work email address book to LinkedIn and invite clients to connect. This may be a breach of confidential information, as the employee is publicising their organisation’s database. In addition, when an employee exits an organisation they remain connected online to these clients and are subsequently able to notify all their connections of their move to a different organisation. Misleading statements – Whether online or offline, you still need to adhere to the regulations of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Therefore, if you say your product is the best you need to be able to back this claim up – even if you are happily announcing on Facebook your
excitement regarding a new product launch. Do not make any false or misleading claims as part of your marketing and promotional activities. This includes advertisements or statements using any media, including print, radio, television, websites and social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. You can also be held responsible for posts or public comments made by others on your social media pages which are false or likely to mislead or deceive consumers. Employment issues – How private is social media? Can you research employees through their social media profiles? Can you use social media in hiring (and firing) decisions? In the decision of Mr Damien O’Keefe v Williams Muir’s Pty Ltd T/A Troy Williams The Good Guys, Fair Work Australia upheld the right of an employer to dismiss an employee over a crude and threatening Facebook rant against a manager that was posted out of hours on his home computer. The Tribunal’s deputy president stated, “The fact that the comments were made on the applicant’s home computer, out of work hours, does not make any difference”. Discrimination – Discrimination is not as simple as you might think. Everything that singles out one employee as not being given the equal opportunity as other people, may be considered discrimination. Do your managers accept all friend requests on social networking sites from their employees?

Does non-acceptance of a request amount to an act of indirect discrimination? Section 7 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Cth) (Anti-discrimination Act) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a variety of attributes such as sex, relationship status, age, race and so on. Therefore, if managers indiscriminately accept friend requests, it could be argued that the non-friending could amount to discrimination on the basis of one of the attributes in section 7. Did you also know that it is not acceptable to review social media profiles of employees and candidates without informing them first? Therefore, you may need to let job applicants know that their social media profile may be a decision-making factor in the hiring process. The rules and laws for social media are still very much a work in progress. However, it is obvious that the law is taking social media very seriously. To stay on the right side of the law, make sure you monitor any future developments as these can have serious repercussions for your business. The first step for business’s seeking to address their social media issues is to have a comprehensive policy and procedure manual drafted by a professional consultant. n

WhywillTwitter outgrow Facebook and Instagram Choosing which social media networks to join and invest time in from a growing lineup of options is bewildering for many. What do they really offer your business? CORINNA ESSA looks at the power of Twitter and its new and improved features for business owners compared to other big social networks such as Facebook and Instagram. With 360 million active Twitter users as of August 2015, the sheer volume of celebrity users, the 500 million tweets that are published a day and the dependency of news broadcasters to acquire information from this channel proves that the Twitter phenomenon is here to stay. With 90% of small businesses using Facebook to grow their online presence, it is difficult to understand why many businesses are yet to embrace the devastatingly effective power of Twitter when it comes to audience building, gathering audience insights, marketing and brand awareness. Although at first it can look busy, noisy and hard to decipher with all the hashtags, links and @ symbols included in almost every message, Twitter is the most effective marketing tool for many reasons. First, every message (also known as “tweet”) goes to all your followers. In other words, should you have 1,000 Twitter followers and you publish a tweet, this message will appear on the timeline of every audience member. In contrast, Facebook posts are seen by only a fraction of your audience (on average, by only 16% of your fan base, or less) because of Facebook algorithms, and their effort to give priority to advertisers. This makes Twitter a much more powerful tool when it comes to marketing and influence. Secondly, since tweets cannot exceed 140 characters they remain short and effective. It is no surprise that tweets as short as the one published by Oreo: “Power Out. No problem” accompanied by an image saying “you can still dunk in the dark” got retweeted over 15,000 times. Thirdly, Twitter is among the best audience listening tools. By simply typing a keyword or keyword-phrase in its search engine, anyone can retrieve anything that has ever been published on Twitter which includes that specific keyword. You can even dig deeper and insert codes such as: -http? ‘Keyword’ to retrieve only questions asked about the specific keyword of your interest. Unlike Facebook which only allows you to find keyword-based
conversations from your contacts, Twitter allows you to capture all keywordbased conversations making instant communication with your target market easy. Furthermore, although Twitter users initially could only send direct (private) messages to someone provided they followed each other, thanks to its new feature, anyone can now communicate privately with any other user as long as they have opted in to the feature. The communication ease that Twitter now provides makes networking and marketing in general much more effective. Another interesting fact about Twitter is its demographics, with 27% of Twitter users earning more than $75,000 a year compared to Instagram where 28% of its users earn less than $30,000. This makes Twitter’s audience a more attractive one when it comes to spending power. Although Facebook has been the preferred advertising platform over Twitter, now Twitter ads present a massive opportunity for marketers and business owners. Based on a recent comparison made between the performance of Facebook ads compared to Twitter ads, the latter receives an average clickthrough rate (the proportion of people clicking on the call-to-action) of 1.3% compared to Facebook ads’ CTR which is an average of 0.11%. Moreover, a little-known tool called ‘Twitter Cards’ now allows business owners to build a mailing list at an unprecedented rate. This simple, yet very effective feature allows users to include a clickable call to action on images. When clicked on, the contact details of the person who clicked on the call to action get added to the owner’s database, making building lists easier and faster. Finally, not only is Twitter dramatically improving their existing features, new exciting features for businesses are being released. From a promising social network, it could soon outperform many others. These features include a mobile app that allows you to capture, edit and share a video, making engaging, unique content-creation easier than ever.
From its sheer volume of users and audience reach to its ability to gather audience insights and connect everyone to anyone, Twitter’s potential for growing a business is hard to deny. Dispelling the 3 biggest myths
Many companies stand to benefit from having more women on their boards. Professor BETTINA BUECHEL looks at the way forward. Despite advances in gender equality over the last century, we continue to face a gender gap. In many countries (some more than others) differences in access to economic and political opportunity, education, health, and survival between men and women still persist. Of course, the degree of this difference is dependent on the country; it is the smallest in Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden, and the widest in Iran, Mali, Syria, Pakistan, Chad and Yemen. Boards are a key place where we see this gender gap, as their composition continues to be overwhelmingly male. In the European Union (EU), around 17 per cent of board directors of the largest publicly listed companies are women; in the US, women hold about 19 per cent of the directorships of S&P 500 firms, whereas in Japan women hold a mere 1 per cent.
POSITIVE IMPACT Studies have documented the positive impact that women’s membership on boards makes in terms of company performance. What might explain this? First, women bring a fresh perspective to complex issues. Compared to their male counterparts, female board members are more likely to take active roles on boards, challenge issues and ask difficult questions. Second, women can bring a deeper understanding of certain markets and consumers than their male colleagues. A third explanation is that women tend to be more flexible and better able to manage ambiguous situations.

3 MYTHS Before examining how to improve board readiness, three myths need to be dispelled. Myth 1: Women don’t have the right leadership style. According to a study by Cranfield University, once women are appointed onto FTSE 100 boards, women directors are more likely to be appointed to subsequent directorships and to hold multiple directorships than men. Myth 2: Women haven’t got the right experience. Many male CEOs frequently blame female absence from boards to a lack of general management experience, and not being in the pipeline long enough. Female directors, on the other hand, say there aren’t more women on boards due to this kind of male stereotyping. Myth 3: Women don’t take risks. Women are more likely than men to be appointed onto corporate boards in precarious circumstances (Ryan and Haslam, 2005). There is also evidence to suggest that women who pursue a career path leading to directorship are less risk averse than ‘typical’ women (Adams, 2014).
GET BOARD READY
A recent study investigated the relationship between women on boards and performance. It found that women can make more of a difference in countries where greater gender parity is already present. The results of women on boards showed greater profit, a wider range of knowledge, experience and values, and positive market performance. However, the relationship between female directorships and market performance is negative in countries with low gender equality.
1. Build your network – the power to anticipate and influence change rests in your network. You need to know your network to nurture it. Speaking to head-hunters is one way of getting onto the radar screens of boards. You may wish to consider becoming a shadow board member; in this case, you will need to identify whom to follow. A natural choice would be your mentor. But if this is not a possibility, mapping your network will help you to identify possibilities.

Develop your story – by taking an inventory of what you know, think about what is distinctive about your experience and expertise. Develop a narrative about what sets you apart. This will answer the question of why anyone should be interested in you. Get ready to be able communicate this clearly and succinctly. As you begin to identify the boards on which you seek membership, this will help you to develop visibility. In the changing board landscape that is open to an increasing number of females, women face the challenge of having greater education than previous generations, but less high-level leadership experience. This means that search criteria will have to be adapted. There will need to be greater attention to onboarding and board dynamics in order to avoid tokenism and the development of an ‘us versus them’ mentality. Is your company ready to benefit from more women on its board? Are you board ready? Keep these myths and tips in mind to create more inclusive boards and reap the rewards of diversity. n

850g pork ribs (8 – 10)
1. Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix.

V cup tomato sauce
2. Place pork into sauce mixture and marinade in the fridge for several hours.
1. Puree the dressing ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Store in fridge until ready to use.

2. Cook the quinoa according to package directions. When finished cooking, chill in the fridge or freezer. The texture of the salad is better when the quinoa is cool and crumbles easily.

4. Cover tray with alfoil and baking paper to protect the tray.

5. Place marinated ribs on tray and bake for 30 – 40 minutes, basting and turning every 10 minutes.

1. Preheat oven to 190°C. 2. Grease a small slice tin with baking paper or spray oil. 3. P lace the apples into a saucepan with a dash of water and slightly cook but still hard in the middle. Strain and set aside. 4. I n a mixing bowl add the flour, eggs, sugar, and lastly melted butter. Mix until just combined. 5. P ress most of the mixture into the tin creating a base. Leave in the mixing bowl.

6. Pour the drained apples onto the base. Set aside. 7. A dd the remaining flour to the mixing bowl and create a crumble like texture. Adding more melted butter or flour until the consistency resembles crumbles. Sprinkle onto the apples. 8. Sprinkle the cinnamon, mixed spice and a touch more sugar onto the crumble.
Add freshly cooked chicken breast at the final stage.
9. Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown.

How to survive the transition from corporate career to
being your own boss Thinking of ditching the corporate ladder? There’s more to consider beyond the bright idea and business plan when it comes to taking the leap. SAMANTHA CHAMBERS shares her insights on being better prepared.
The lure of pursuing a business idea is enticing and exciting, but it can be a long and hard journey if you dive in unprepared. Creating your own path to success, wealth and happiness isn’t beyond your reach. A smooth transition and getting off to a good start involves being mindful of the required new skillsets, behaviours and ways of working. The following should be at the forefront of your mind.
SOLID FOUNDATIONS Without the right foundations, a house will not stand. But the right foundations will set your business up for success and longevity. Having solid foundations means being clear on your ‘why’, your strengths and your vision. Why do you want to make the transition? It needs to go beyond simply not liking your job. Knowing your strengths ensures your future endeavours align to what you are good at and hence what you enjoy. Knowing where you and your business are going in the future will help with focus and having clear steps to get there.
HATERS AND CRITICS Not everyone is going to love your idea of leaving the security of a job. Those most likely to be judgemental will be close to you because of their concern for you or their own insecurities. Recognise where this may come from within your circle of family and friends. It’s important to be aware of this as their judgement can impact your confidence and create self-doubt. Don’t return the feeling, instead, believe in yourself, stay courageous and focus on the path ahead.

DISCIPLINED MINDSET
According to John C. Maxwell, “Your network is your net worth.” The concept of working for yourself is somewhat of a misnomer if you want to be successful. Every successful business person has a good network of people around them. In addition to potential clients, it includes advisers, strategic partners, mentors, potential employees and the like. Both online and offline networking strategies are essential. It’s also important to realise that the real value may not lie with your direct network, but rather their networks.
Corporate environments provide structure via systems, policies and procedures. Outside the realms of a corporate office, this structure becomes loose and life and work will merge. The spare room becomes the office and working at 2 am can become a norm. Boundaries need to be set to ensure you achieve your outcomes, but also have time to live your life. Organisation, planning and prioritisation skills need to be at the fore, as well as defining how you intend to be accountable. To stay positive and focused, it’s also important to commit to looking after yourself and staying fit and healthy.
BUILDING TRUST Bob Burg famously said, “People do business with, and refer business to people they know, like and trust.” Building your brand and gaining trust should be key components of your sales and marketing strategies. Your resume will start to lose significance as a branding tool. Instead, develop your messaging and stories around your uniqueness and niche, the value you provide and the problem(s) you solve.
CASH IS KING It’s no secret that running out of cash is one of the biggest reasons for small business failure. Careful budgeting and understanding your numbers is key to keeping your finances in check. As a guide, consider having enough cash to cover at least six months of expenses during transition.
Anyone can make a successful transition if they have the drive and determination, are open to adopting some new ways of working and are willing to embrace the emotional roller coaster ride that comes with breaking free from the infamous comfort zone. It’s been said that business success is ultimately 1% idea, 99% execution. So on top of everything else, there’s no point waiting to be ready. Do you want your business to have more value? For most of us the answer would be yes! STACY FARRELL discusses why businesses should re-think the value for customers and potential clients of quality hard copy printed promotional materials.
In this digital era of instant information and messaging, how many times do you receive emails and web links and think “I’ll read this later” and never get back to it or just trash it? Who has the time to sort through endless emails, messages and websites to find the information they desire?
reasons: they are easier to refer to later (72%) giving them a longer than 15 second lifespan*; they are often informative (48%)* and it is easier to locate the information instead of guessing which web menu to select; and they are easier to understand (42%)* as readers know that an English catalogue reads front to back.
Has the value of businesses these days been undermined by all the technology? And what about the value of print and paper?
Print media still has one of the highest levels of trust for consumers and is deemed to be more credible than online marketing. The fact that a business has invested considerable time and resourcing into designing and producing a piece of print collateral, sends an underlying message to consumers that they are valued and that the content messaging is reliable and trustworthy.
In this generation of digital consumerism, did you know that 66% of 24 to 25-year-old Australians prefer to read catalogues in print rather than online (ACA, 2013), not to mention the generations of other Australians who lack the level of computer literacy needed for an online search or purchase. Consumers are more engaged when reading printed material as opposed to skimming and scanning websites trying to locate the information they need in 10 seconds or less. Printed material has more value, a longer lifespan and offers the reader more time to engage in, review and share the content in their own time. So if you want to really add more value to your business, then give value back to your customers and give them something that they can value. After all what is more pleasurable than picking up a newspaper, magazine, book or catalogue and flicking through the pages while enjoying the content and the feel of the paper between your fingers as you turn the pages. Can you imagine scrolling through the Women’s Weekly online or Luxury Resorts or the latest edition of Who Weekly? I don’t think so. Is your body more powerful than
YOUR WORDS?
Recent discoveries in the field of neuroscience are proving what you would intuitively know: how you say something is much more significant than what you say. SALLY DOOLEY looks at the research and offers some proven strategies to increase your influence as a communicator. Whether you are leading your own business, teams or organisation, your capacity to successfully influence determines your outcomes in every area, including your profitability. Learning to master your communication skills at conscious and unconscious levels, both verbally and non-verbally will make you stand out as a person of influence. As women leaders it is even more critical to intentionally create an effective communication style because research suggests that women are generally perceived by male executives as being more emotional than men. Apparently, when women express their emotions, it can often make their ideas seem less convincing and have the effect of compromising their credibility. So, how can you give voice to the issues you are passionate about at the same time as building your reputation as a mover and shaker, with value to add? Here are three keys to help you communicate with power and presence.
1. Communicate and influence More has been discovered about the brain over the last couple of decades than ever before. One of the startling discoveries is that we have mirror neurons in our frontal lobes that unconsciously send and receive messages about our own and others’ emotions. These neurons create an urge in us to mimic the emotion or behaviour we see. Have you ever yawned after seeing someone else yawn? That was your mirror neurons at work!
What also seems to be apparent is that the person who has the most influence in the room sets the tone in terms of emotions and attitudes. Whether you recognise it or not, your own emotions and attitudes are significantly influencing those around you, often at an unconscious level. What emotions and attitudes do you want to nurture in your environment? Make sure you regularly check in with your own emotions and attitudes and intentionally model the ones you want to see.
2. Boost your self-awareness Great communicators are students of themselves! They understand how their beliefs and thinking patterns influence their communication, so they focus from the inside out. They don’t attempt to present a sales pitch to a new client or announce a new direction to their teams without first paying attention to how they are thinking and feeling about it. Take time before an important meeting or presentation to imagine how a confident and influential person would be thinking and feeling. Choose those same thoughts and the confident feelings will follow.
3. Posture yourself for success Researcher Amy Cuddy and associates have discovered that humans and animals express power or influence through open, expansive postures, and powerlessness through closed, contractive postures. Think of the classic executive reclining in his or her chair, feet on the desk and arms folded behind their head
with confidence exuding from every pore, and this starts to make sense! Amazingly, they found that adopting a high power non-verbal posture for just two minutes created changes in the brain. These include elevated testosterone levels creating increased feelings of power and tolerance for risk, while lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol. In other words, people felt more powerful and experienced enhanced cognitive function, greater willingness to take action, greater control over their body and more positive feelings. They felt like a mover and shaker and unconsciously communicated that to those around them. Next time you want to communicate with influence, try posing in an open, expansive posture for a couple of minutes in the privacy of your office (or a starfish pose in a bathroom cubicle works well too!). You will be astonished by the difference in how you feel, how powerfully you communicate and the influence you will have. Remember, your capacity to communicate determines your level of leadership success. Boost your success by intentionally harnessing the power of non-verbal and unconscious communication and benefit from the results you will experience. n

Are you avoiding having a
DIFFICULT CONVERSATION? Difficult conversations don’t have to be so challenging. With assistance from ROSALIND CARDINAL’s secret tips, you no longer need to avoid those difficult conversations and instead approach them with confidence.
Difficult conversations often abound in the workplace and they cannot be avoided forever. Such conversations can be intimidating because they are often emotionally charged and involve confronting someone who may not agree with your assessment.
if needed and clarify what you do intend and what you don’t intend. “I am sorry that I raised my voice just then. What I intend is to give you some open and honest feedback that I believe will help your relationship with the rest of the team. What I don’t want to do is to give that feedback in a way that isn’t constructive.”
Few people enjoy having those challenging conversations, such as dealing with offensive behaviour from a co-worker, giving the boss negative feedback, giving a poor performance review, or critiquing a colleague’s work.
4. Create mutual intent, which is something
Recall your last crucial conversation. What happened? Did it go well? If not, here are some tips for success next time.
1. Be clear in your own head before you start about what outcome you want and what outcome you don’t want. For example: I want Eric to understand the impact his behaviour has on the team and to make a commitment to change. I don’t want to upset him by handling this badly. Think about and plan for how to get what you really want and avoid what you don’t want and how you would behave if you really wanted this outcome.
2. Pay attention to your own and others’ reactions during the conversation. Look for heightened emotions and signs of defensiveness. For example: Eric is getting flushed and looking pretty upset. I have raised my voice in response.
3. Create safety in the conversation. Apologise
that you can agree on. “Eric, wouldn’t you agree that having great relationships in a team is something that we should aspire to? And we all have our part to play in creating good relationships? And if the relationships are strained, that we should work on them?”
5. Share your story. Make sure you talk about the issue and do not skirt around it, and that you express your own view, not hide behind it. (Avoid: “I think you are great, it’s the others that think this”). Instead, be candid about your thoughts and feelings. “Eric, I have noticed that sometimes you can be pretty blunt with people. When you have done it with me, I find it can be off-putting and I feel taken aback. Then I feel less likely to want to work closely with you.”
6. Create space for others to share their story. Ask questions to actively explore other viewpoints. “Eric, tell me what is going on for you? What are you feeling?” Watch out for three common defensive strategies: Victim – it’s not my fault

7. Build consensus. Find points you do agree on and work from there. “Eric, I hear that we are both agreeing that teamwork is important, and that sometimes we don’t all get along. I am also hearing you say that you are feeling overworked and that you get grumpy because of that.”
8. Be clear about actions. “We are agreed that we will review your workload over the next two weeks. We agreed that you try to be aware of your moods and how they impact others, and that I will give you feedback ‘in the moment’ as I notice things.”

The power of intentional communication Communication is cornerstone to all relationships, it is the foundation to success in business and in life. Yet where do we learn this powerful skill? We usually learn it in the trenches. KYLIE WARRY shares the keys to becoming an intentional communicator. Communication is the way we connect with the world. It is a powerful skill that has made and broken many individuals. The famous nursery rhyme “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” really got it wrong. Words can certainly cause trauma and world wars! So I want to ask you a question, why do you do, what you do? Are you a Talker, a Doer, a Supporter or a Thinker. We are all different. And in this difference lies the power and beauty of being intentional. You need to know where you are coping from, what makes you tick and then be able to understand where someone else is coming from. Only then can you be intentional (communicate deliberately with purpose) to ensure that they receive the message you intend. This is so important and particularly when you are under stress or in a crisis. You need to ensure your message is received loud and clear and to bring people toward you not push them away or offend them. For example, Jenny is a Doer, she loves to make decisions and get things done. She is better at tasks than other people and feels she is a great leader. To others she can come across as bossy, direct and sometimes angry. But Jenny doesn’t see this, she has no idea. No one has been brave enough to tell her, as she is a little scary! Jenny’s PA, Anne is a supporter, she loves working for a cause, is quiet, caring and just

wants harmony. She struggles with Jenny’s harsh tone, short sharp sentences and booming voice under pressure. Anne finds Jenny is mostly a good boss but can be overbearing and scary, particularly when a deadline approaches. Anne wants to speak up and let Jenny know that she feels intimidated but does not have the courage. Eventually, Anne just quietly leaves and Jenny has no idea and wonders why all of her good PAs keep moving on. This does not have to happen. The best way to explain affiliate marketing is to give you an example of how others have used it. There are lots of variations but this is the most common.
But Sarah knows Heather who owns a marketing consultancy firm and a large database of people who may need Sarah’s services. So Sarah says to Heather, “Hey, Heather! Want to make some quick money without lifting a finger?”
AFFILIATE MARKETING IN ACTION – A CASE STUDY: Sarah is a successful business coach who sells her year-long coaching packages for $12,000 per person. To get new people into the programme, she runs low-cost seminars (around $37 per person) to give people a ‘taste’ of what she offers in her coaching programme. At the end of each seminar she promotes her coaching programme. The success of Sarah’s programme is based on how many people she can get into the seminar room. She knows that once people are in the room, she is skilled enough to be able to get them to sign up. So how does she get new people into the room? She could use traditional models like mainstream advertising or pay per click, but it’s very hit and miss and expensive. So how does she find large tracts of new people with an interest in what she has to offer without paying out big bucks to advertise? The answer is affiliate marketing.
Sarah’s current database is pretty much ‘exhausted’ as everyone in her database has either been through her coaching programme, or is aware of it and doesn’t want to go.
“Sure!” says Heather, being the smart cookie she is. “How?” “First, I’ll write a nice little email that promotes my $37 seminar. Then, if you send the email to your database and if people consequently register to attend, I’ll give you 30% of the $37 dollar entrance fee. The email will have a specific action link which I can use to keep track of anyone who comes in via your database.” “Wow! 30% of the entrance fee! That’s a whopping $11 per person! Thanks Sarah, you’re so generous,” she says, wryly. “No, it gets better!” says Sarah. “Yes, you get the $11 per person for the seminar but if they enrol in my $12,000 programme, I’ll give you 30% of that too!” Heather quickly does her sums. “So I’ll get $11 plus $3,600 per person who enrols just for sending out an email that you write for me?” “Yep! That’s it!” says Sarah. “Not bad, huh?”
“Yeah, it’s great – when can we get started?” says Heather, seeing the potential of making some good money quickly. If 100 of Heather’s clients enrol in Sarah’s programme, she will make over $360,000 simply by sending out an email. And best of all, Sarah has to do all the work of actually delivering the content and keeping the clients happy. Not a bad gig is it? So what does Sarah get out of it? Lots. Sure, she has to give away a fair percentage of her coaching fee but 70% of something is better than 100% of nothing. And as a result of her partnership with Heather, she can potentially get thousands of new people to her seminar, all of whom would not have heard about her otherwise.
HOW TO MAKE AFFILIATE MARKETING WORK FOR YOU: If you don’t have a database but need one, try using affiliate marketing as a way to grow it. It won’t cost you (in outright costs), it gets your name out to a whole range of new people and it helps your partners make money. What’s not to like about that? It’s as close to passive income as you can get without lifting a finger. n

Workplace violence
HOW FAR DOES IT EXTEND? Following a workplace investigation she recently undertook, MAUREEN KYNE discusses what is workplace violence, and exposes how things can go so wrong in a workplace.
Workplace violence is incidents where employees are abused, threatened, assaulted or subjected to other offensive behaviour in circumstances related to their work. It can be physical and, or psychological. Whilst physical violence is easy to identify, psychological violence has been long underestimated. Psychological violence is often perpetrated through repeated behaviour of a type that may seem minor but which cumulatively escalates to a serious form of violence. Psychological violence often consists of repeated, intended, unwelcome and unreciprocated action which may have a devastating effect on the target. This is not to say a single event would constitute an act of violence. Physical and psychological violence often overlap, making different forms of violence difficult to categorise as: Abuse – involves the misuse of physical and psychological strength. It is behaviour that is uncivil and includes harassment, bullying and mobbing. n
Threat – to menace hurt or injure resulting in fear of physical, sexual, psychological harm or other negative consequences to the target(s). n
under EEO legislation such as age, disability, domestic circumstances, sex, sexual orientation, race or colour. Sexual harassment – unwelcome sexual behaviour, which could be expected to make a person feel offended, humiliated or intimidated. It can be physical, verbal or written. n
Bullying – a form psychological harassment that occurs when a person(s) repeatedly behaves unreasonably towards a worker(s) at work where the behaviour creates a risk to health and safety. n
In any given workplace there will be both positive and negative stresses. But when stress is intense, continuous or repeated a person may be unable to cope or if there is a lack of support, then stress becomes negative leading to physical illness and psychological disorders. These can be seen as early disorders, showing as real illnesses that become chronic, leading to accidents and even death. In a report by Hurrell et al. (1997, pp. 163–170), it was concluded that assaults may occur more frequently among highly stressed workers than those experiencing less stress.
Physical assault – to physically injure or attack a person(s) leading to physical harm.
It is important to be clear about what both physical and psychological violence is. Knowing what it is, is the first step in establishing a framework to manage both physical and psychological violence in the workplace.
Harassment – unwelcome conduct – physical or psychological, verbal, non-verbal, visual – based on the protected attributes
A recent workplace investigation started with one complaint involving six employees which rapidly grew to fourteen. What was

disturbing throughout the investigation was the acceptance of behaviour that had crossed the line and that those in leadership roles either just did not know how to handle the complaint when told about it, or even worse they considered the behaviour was not serious enough to act on. Even more disturbing was how the unacceptable behaviour was impacting the employees outside of work. So what went so incredibly wrong? Stress was a common denominator in many of the discussions both in the workplace and in some cases the domestic situation. So why did it get to this level? The workplace had policies in place but they had not been reinforced; n
Those promoted into leadership roles received no training; n
Those in leadership roles had not received any training for some time; n
There were those in leadership roles who had not been performance managed. n
It is the responsibility of all workplaces to work towards creating a workplace that is built on mutual respect, is civil and inclusive creating a high performing workplace. n

‘in the cloud’ mean? You may have heard about cloud software and working in the cloud. But what does it all mean for you and the way you work? LISA STONEHAM demystifies the cloud and alleviates many of the common concerns people have.
Over the last few years, adoption of cloudbased software has grown rapidly to the point where it is now widely accepted and in common use. Despite the widespread acceptance, the mention of the word ‘cloud’ still leaves many people scratching their heads. With a lack of understanding comes fear of the unknown.
LET’S CUT TO THE CHASE What exactly is the cloud? No, it is nothing to do with the white fluffy things you see in the sky! In a nutshell, cloud computing refers to the ability to access your data and software over the Internet without using the hard drive on your computer or a server. All you need is a device with an Internet connection, which means the cloud allows you to access your data from your desktop computer, phone and tablet. An example of cloud software is Internet banking.
WHAT FREAKS PEOPLE OUT ABOUT THE IDEA OF THE CLOUD? By far the most common question asked in relation to using cloud accounting software is “Will my data be safe?” The answer to that is a resounding yes. Look at it this way – do you ever ask if Internet banking is safe these days? The reality is that the major cloud software vendors have the same level of data security as the banks. Let’s think about it from another angle. If you were relying on the hard drive of your laptop to store your data, what would happen if you

It would likely be pretty catastrophic. In reality your data is actually safer in the cloud than on your computer or server. When you use the cloud, computer crashes or corrupted files on USB sticks do not affect you.
WHAT ARE THE OTHER ADVANTAGES OF USING THE CLOUD? When you only require an Internet connection to access your data you are no longer reliant on the desktop computer in your office to do your work. Being able to work with a tablet, phone or laptop means you can work from anywhere at any time including the beach or your local café. There are also massive cost advantages. Most cloud software providers charge a small monthly fee to access their services that includes automatic system upgrades. There is no huge capital outlay of setting up servers or

How many times have you heard that first home buyers can’t afford to buy property in Sydney? The media love to throw that catch cry around on a regular basis but owning property is achievable, even with a small deposit.
Thinking outside the square and having a solid investment strategy is essential to the success of your property investment dream.
The real issue is that people are just not prepared to “think outside the square”. My daughter bought her first property in 2009, aged 24, with around $20,000. Sounds incredible, doesn’t it?

There was some concern at the time that she would not get much of a property given her deposit was so small. She was determined to make it happen and did get some assistance to achieve her property goal.

As a seasoned investor, with my investor hat securely on and my daughter in tow, we went looking for an apartment that could be suitable (and affordable) for her to purchase. We looked at many properties and finally found one that suited her needs.
But “times have changed and you can’t buy property like that in Sydney anymore!” I hear you say. But here is the real issue. If we continue to put those road blocks in our way, we will convince ourselves that it’s all too hard to buy property and never do it.
After a period of intense negotiation, we secured the older style two-bed, one-bath and one-car space apartment in Lane Cove on Sydney’s lower North Shore. The next challenge was financing the property.
When there is a desire to find a way forward and with the right property mentoring and advice, purchasing a property with a small deposit can be achieved. There are various viable property investment options available but many people have just accepted that they are unable to achieve property ownership.
Because my daughter’s deposit was small, a bank product was sourced which used equity from one of my own investment properties as security so that she didn’t have to pay loan mortgage insurance to the bank. VIDEO EDITING What to consider when outsourcing As businesses move to create more and more online videos, the issue of how to edit them efficiently becomes very important. KERRIN SMITH shares some common issues that can arise when outsourcing video editing.

Generally the initial filming of the video must be done in-house or locally if you appear in it. While this part of the process can seem substantial, it is actually the editing which will take up the bulk of the production workload. It is also the part of the process which will often be considered for overseas outsourcing. The question is will you save time and money or create a huge headache for your business by engaging a cheaper offshore video editor? Video editing is one of those jobs that eats up time quickly. Outsourced (OS) video editing provides a budget friendly alternative, but there can be downsides. Before deciding on OS editing as your solution, ensure you are aware of the common pitfalls.

Ideally you should have recorded your video in the highest definition. This will usually be called Full HD or 1080p and has a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9. If you are filming in this setting your file size could end up at around 150 MB for a minute of footage. Therefore, sending your files OS can become tricky. You can use something like Dropbox or Hightail to upload the video files, however, these services are limited by your account settings. Check your file size limitations and storage quota before you start filming to avoid this early editing frustration. You may also find that the sheer time it takes you to upload your files via the internet is simply not a viable option either.
Technical specifications Before you engage an OS video editor, check in and make sure you are both on the same page with technical specifications. There are settings which are specific to Australia that you should ask your editor to provide your edited video in. One of the main specifications you need to check is the frame rate. In Australia the standard is 25 FPS (frames per second). Other specifications you need to confirm include the screen ratio which should be 16:9, the video quality which should be Full HD or 1080p and file type you require such as MP4, WMV or AVI.

steps to prepare in advance. If you do not have a clear end result in mind, how can you expect to convey your requirements to an OS service provider? You need to have direction and be definite in what you are asking for. Plan out your video and clearly convey this information to your video editor. You need to be available to answer any questions too. If you are not prepared to put in this time the chances of you receiving an edited video back that meets your expectations are slim.
Copyright material Another area to pay attention to is the potential use of copyright material in your edited video. Video editors may include things like graphics and music in your final edited video and it is important to know where these came from. Websites such YouTube can detect the use of copyright material such as unauthorised soundtracks and you need to make sure you do not get caught up with copyright infringement. All music, photos, text and graphics are copyright. You need to expressly ask if the added features like graphics and music have been obtained and used legally. It is your responsibility to make sure you are not infringing copyright by using these third party resources. If managing these areas seems too difficult you will need to look at alternate options such as local outsourcing and in-house editing. Using a local or in-house editor will immediately alleviate most of these problems. But with the jump in costs how do you make the decision on whether your business can afford it or not? The answer is to be selective. Identify videos that are key to your business and allocate more of your budget and time to these so that they are of high quality and are professionally finished. Other videos that are complimentary to your business or less important can be selected for OS editing. That way if things do not go to plan with your OS outsourcing you will not be left frustrated. n

Accessing Australia’s
new trade deal
In 2015, we have heard about overseas prospects available from the recent trade deals signed by Australia with foreign countries. JENNIFER McQUEEN discusses key points on how to benefit from these initiatives by joining the ranks of Australia’s internationally active businesses.
In the past 12 months Australia has signed individual trade agreements, known as Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), with three north Asian nations: Japan, South Korea and China. The fourth deal was a multi-national agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Australia’s biggest trade deal in a generation, encompassing 12 nations. FTAs are designed to allow better access to export markets and create an improved competitive position for Australian exports, resulting from lower tariffs, easier quotas, lower restrictions and a whole range of measures to enhance two-way investment and co-operation between partners from across borders. So what does all this mean for business owners? It means you may be able to get your products and services into your existing offshore markets quicker, easier and with fewer obstacles, or to access markets you previously found too difficult. The new breed of FTAs also addresses more closely the needs of service providers who can now supply international customers as efficiently as they do domestic ones. Reduced costs on imports for business and consumers alike allow us quicker access to newer technologies and greater flexibility in our spending. The lower Australian dollar is a benefit for Australian exporters, but a challenge for importers and consumers. The new agreements, which cover six of our top ten trade partners, will partially offset many challenges. What characterises Australian international businesses? Firstly, they are not merely
exporters. In fact, only 25% of these businesses rely solely on export activities. Of the remainder, 25% both export and import and 47% of businesses are involved in things like overseas manufacture, investment in overseas businesses or drawing capital investment from overseas and possibly bringing in overseas qualified or skilled employees. Noticeably, 71% of Australian exporters do so in a country where we have a valid trade agreement. There is no ‘one size fits all’ formula which you can reliably work from, but there are three key aspects to success in a new market which most internationally active firms share. These should be implemented right from the start of your venture. If possible, choose markets where the competition is lower than at home as history shows this is a factor in export success. And consider the following. Demonstrate commitment to your chosen market. Allocate sufficient funds, time and resources so you can spend time in that market and get to know it. Initial desk research and preparation is crucial to this step, as is tapping into all the knowledgeable networks you have. Seek the help of knowledgeable allies or locals. n
Make well-prepared market visits to develop local knowledge and confidence. This builds in-depth understanding and helps you learn cultural and other differences first hand. n
Build long-term close relationships with well qualified and connected agents and distributors. n
Do not adopt the detached approach of ‘filling and shipping orders’ instead build n
trusting relationships. You need to be able to work with your distributor to jointly make key decisions and commit to a long-term partnership which will benefit from their local knowledge and market experience, cooperating on key aspects such as marketing strategies. Choose your international business manager for their people skills, flexibility and learning ability as much as for their technical capability. People who enjoy travel, thrive on new experiences and the challenges of new market environments will do best. n
Remember, expanding your business overseas expands and diversifies your target market, exposes you to new ideas and opportunities, attracts investment, provides choices of componentry input, buffers you against downturns in the local market, and generally makes the business more profitable than a purely domestic operator. The majority of workers employed in internationally focused businesses are paid more than those in domestic competitors. FTAs are designed to forge stronger links between the economies. Australia is undergoing an economic realignment in both our focus and our strengths. It is in your best interest to be involved and make the most of the opportunities in front of you. n

Standing out in the crowd without a big marketing budget can be a real challenge for a small business. But if you follow ANNETTE DENSHAM’s ten tips, your business could soon be in the spotlight.

Advertising can be expensive and by learning how to get publicity through PR strategies, you can really make a big bang through the media.

Your major metro paper, a state angle and the national papers, a national angle. This will help to guide you with crafting your media release or pitch.

Public relations is a way to leverage a business owner’s time and money for far better results than traditional marketing alone. Many small businesses overlook this strategy because they think it’s too hard or their business is too boring. But with the right approach, any business, of any size, in any industry, for any topic can get their share of publicity. Journalists and producers are not untouchable or unapproachable – they are keen to hear good news stories from small businesses. The secret to getting publicity for free is learning how to do your own PR. Hiring a PR company is not a viable option for many small businesses especially start-ups or sole traders who are
TEN TIPS TO HELP YOU STAND OUT: 1. Understand the media – not all media
Get to know the journalists – who does what. If you want to target a newspaper, know the section you want to appear in, who the journalist is, read their work for a few weeks and get to know their style. It is also handy to know the roles others play – editors, publishers, general managers, sales reps; all contribute to the editorial decision making. However, your first port of call is always the journalist you want to write or present your story to.
2. Deadlines matter – all media outlets have deadlines (don’t call when journalists are on deadline – a great way to alienate yourself – unless you have breaking news). Find out what they are so you never miss an opportunity to get your story published. Magazines will often work months in advance, whereas a daily paper’s deadline is more frequent.
3. Respect time – if a journalist calls you, get back to them ASAP. Act with haste. Even if you can’t help, let the journalist know. If you are easy to contact and respond quickly, you become a valuable reliable source. If you take your time responding, the journalist will assume you don’t want coverage.
4. What is newsworthy? Follow tip 1 to help you understand the news value of a topic, issue, product or service. You might think the opening of your new office is really exciting, the major metro paper will not. Put yourself in the journalist’s shoes (possibly cynical and sceptical – they get 100s of story ideas pitched to them weekly).
5. Don’t give up – one media release may not be enough. If you have completed the Public Relation Mastery program, you will know there is a lot more to it than a one-off release. The secret to getting media attention is about developing a long-term strategy.
6. Have a go – Thomas A. Edison said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” If you do not have a go, then you will never know if your story could have got a run. Pick up the phone. What is the worst thing that could happen to you? They say no? If so, learn from your experience and do better next time.
7. Deal with rejection – Okay, you gave it a go and got a no. Be gracious and polite. Never take a no personally. There could be other things going on that day in the newsroom you

Always approach a journalist by asking if they have time to talk – start off on your best foot.
8. So what? Your story about selling your 100th product may be a big deal to you but to a journalist it is a bit ho hum. Before putting your fingers to the keypad, look at your story objectively and ask yourself, “How does my story solve someone’s problem and does it have appeal?”
9. First contact – there are multiple ways to make contact with your targeted journalist. Some media outlets have contact pages, dedicated phone lines or email addresses. Some journalists prefer a phone call, while others email.
If your story is not time dependent, a media release or email is the best approach, followed up with a phone call. Many journalists are on Twitter or Facebook and you can send them your story idea that way. If it is breaking news, pick up the phone. What are you waiting for?

What are trademarks all about and do you need a trademark(s) for your business? BINH REY sets the record straight on the subjects of trademarks, business names, product names and domain names, and protecting your intellectual property. Many business owners believe that their trading name, company name (Pty Ltd) or domain name protects their name from capture within their industry. Sadly, that is not the case. If a name is not a registered trademark within an industry class, it is open to ‘anyone’, whether a company or individual, to apply for and own the trademark. Trademark regulators in Australia and around the world do not look into the trading history of a company, product and/or services when they examine an application. They look to see if the application is unique enough to warrant the applicant the right to own the trademark. There is also a rule of thumb that you must be the first to apply for the trademark to obtain it. Only a trademark provides legal protection for your business name, product name, website domain name and/or service name. Use of a name for your business, product, website or service does not automatically give you trademark rights which means you could be asked to change your name if it infringes on someone else’s trademark rights. You could even be asked to pay for damages and back pay royalties if the trademark owner believes your company has profited from the use of their trademark.
Case study A recent client has been selling products to major retailers since 1932 without any problems. They said, “Why would we need a trademark now?”
Basically, they had just been lucky. We asked, “How would you feel if you received a letter from another company or individual asking you to stop using your company name and product name today?” In addition to being upset over the loss of “their” name, they said rebranding would cost tens of thousands of dollars. New packaging would be required and there would be a loss of brand recognition in the marketplace for their products. The end result would be a major disruption to their business. The cost of trademarking was less than they expected and they now have peace of mind as they continue to invest in their business and products knowing that no one will be able to take their name away from them. If your business name is not trademarked and you are challenged by another business over use of their name, it is possible to apply to the courts under common law to keep your name. You would need to engage a barrister to argue your case to continue to use your “brand name”, your company name or product/ services name. The cost and anguish could be considerable. It pays to be proactive and to secure trademark protection.
How does a business name and a trademark differ? Business name registration is fairly easy to obtain. For example, “Red Mobile Store” is registered in Victoria but another company can still set up a trading name in New South Wales called “Red Mobile Store NSW”.

Only a trademark provides legal protection for your business name, product name, website domain name and/or service name. To avoid someone in other states from using our business name, you can trademark the word “Red Mobile Store” and have exclusive use of this name. Trademark ownership lasts ten years from the time of registration and provides national protection across state borders.
How does a domain name and a trademark differ? Registration of an internet domain name does not give you any trademark rights as domain names are registered with an accredited domain registrar rather than the trademark office. Even if you own a domain name, you could later be required to surrender it if it infringes someone else’s trademark rights.
Trademark benefits There are many other benefits of owning a trademark including crystallising the goodwill and reputation built into the business or product, as it is a valuable asset that is able to be sold, assigned or licensed. the ‘lucky and unhappy country’
Australia is often referred to as the ‘lucky’ country, but the nation is way down the scale at number 18 when it comes to measuring the population’s ‘happiness’ factor. LORRAINE ENRIGHT looks at how childhood experiences are causing Australians to find themselves wallowing in the doldrums. A recent Gallup poll revealed that, for the third consecutive year, Australia ranked 18th in our level of happiness behind South America. Instead of the ‘lucky’ country, it appears Australia is the ‘sad’ country. Nine out of the top ten happiest countries polled were from South America, with Paraguay claiming the number one spot. It is thought that South America’s high scores reflect its cultural tendency to focus on the positives in life. The poll revealed that fulltime workers were the happiest, even above those who work part-time and are only seeking part-time work. Interestingly, those who are self-employed ranked even lower than those who are unemployed. It is well known that mental health effects happiness. The ‘World Happiness Report’ shows that mental health problems are more important to happiness than physical illnesses, which in turn are more important than income or unemployment. Sadly, due to the stigma associated with mental illness, many people don’t like to speak out about it and miss out on vital treatment. The report also links a child’s emotional development to family dynamics and, in particular, the mother’s emotional health. Mental health research shows that when the family dynamics of support are not present, the child may take on negative aspects of a mother’s, in particular, mental illness. This
can cause issues of self-esteem, and lack of confidence and self-worth in a child. In turn, these issues can result in alcohol and drug addiction, or self-sabotage through self-harm, self-talk and destructive actions. It is important to understand that we all have the ability to make changes in our adult life and not live from our childhood emotional experiences. When we begin to be accountable for our thoughts, feelings, words and actions, we can transform our self-development. Like a powerful computer, the human mind has the capability of 50 to 60 thousand thoughts per day. Without conscious effort, people tend to remain on autopilot and consequently miss out on many great opportunities or experiences that can impact overall happiness. To buck the national trend of unhappiness in Australia, it is imperative to release feelings of stress, fear and anger, to stop them overwhelming you. The six-step exercise below will help release these negative emotions.
6 HAPPINESS EXERCISES:
Mental health research shows that when the family dynamics of support are not present, the child may take on negative aspects of a mother’s, in particular, mental illness. 3. Breathe: Now take three deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Exhale with gusto, releasing the feeling. 4. Break the state: Take some steps backward or to the side. Three steps combined with your breathing exercise breaks the state. 5. Close your eyes: Think or imagine how you would like to feel. When you have an idea and begin to feel a change of how you would like to feel, start to slow down your breathing. 6. Open your eyes and move: Now that your breathing has slowed, drop your shoulders. Take three steps forward, and for each step take a deep breath in through your mouth and out though your nose, gently and softly. Our lives can be busy but the above exercise only takes a few minutes to do. It is easy, convenient and good for your health. The more you do the exercise the less you will react to stress and the happier you will be. n
1. Acknowledgment: When you begin to feel stress, fear or anger, acknowledge it. 2. Awareness: Once you have acknowledged these feelings, thank yourself for the awareness. This helps to break the unwanted emotional state.

Too much on Women are used to hearing the word ‘portions’ regarding food, but what about portions of all the other things that matter? Instead of trying to fit more onto our overflowing plates, JANET CULPITT suggests that in order to successfully serve up the important things in our lives, we should look at portion sizes, and adjust the recipe as required. Prioritise, compromise, allocate time, adjust, schedule, and organise are all words that jump to mind in an average day for many, especially when there is work and family involved. Often women will multitask and take on additional things thinking they can manage it all.
Discuss with family and friends strategies that may affect home life. How full is that plate? And what portion on your plate is business or work compared to the portion for personal life? With summer upon us, what new variables or ingredients will come into life’s recipe? Perhaps they may include end-of-year functions and holidays, earlier sunrises and later sunsets and more time outside, changes to wardrobe due to weather conditions, changes to the type of foods you eat, the list goes on.
When asked, “How are things?” a common answer is, “Very busy”. This response is reactionary, and it is true. How often should the 80/20 rule be applied and how can it be?
Then along comes autumn, and nature changes again, for example leaf colours and temperatures.
We need to break down our days into things that need to be done, and things that would be nice to get done, helping others, learning and growth needs, time out for exercise and relaxation. Knowing that often plans may not always be followed as originally thought is a back-up strategy. Planning ahead can and does help, as long as time for the unexpected is also allocated. Using a plate or cup analogy can help. If you overfill it, things spill over. Do you simply get a bigger plate or cup, or should you consider the portion size? A recipe for a meal usually advises how many people it serves and this determines the portions served up. Using recipes for your work and your personal life, and factoring in how many things you have in those areas, as the ingredients, may be something to be considered.
Perhaps a season change is a good time to review and adjust your usual plans? Mother Nature does this automatically and the changes are evident and expected. Reassess the size of the plate and the portioning that goes on it. A change in “mind season” can be invigorating and can also be very awakening. When unexpected matters come up, juggling, adapting or improvising comes into play. Think of this as similar to not having a specific ingredient on hand for a recipe! Have strategies in place for work flow, for usual cash flow, for customers and clients, and options for outsourcing or sharing areas of expertise. And have a complaints process or backup in case the unexpected occurs.
Just as nature changes, so too should you change what is on your plate so that your various needs are not neglected. n

PAVING THE WAY When to pause your career and start a family is a tough decision that many women grapple with. Starting your own business from scratch is really tough, but can also be very rewarding. RUTH POWER looks at two mumpreneurs who are succeeding at blending entrepreneurship and motherhood.
Mumpreneurs, Carly Chant and Jess Johnson are sisters and co-founders of a successful Sydney-based bookkeeping firm. The business was founded in 2008 when the sisters noticed the need for a professional bookkeeping solution. In 2014, both Carly and Jess left the business in the hands of their loyal team to become first time mums. When asked about this transition, they shared some of the issues that come with starting a business and re-entering the professional workforce with children and what they have learnt.
How important is it to establish a solid team? Dependable people can be hard to come by, so having someone you can trust and consult when taking on the big challenges is essential to your business’ maintenance and peace of mind. To ensure the business doesn’t suffer, plan ahead and don’t be afraid to hire additional staff where necessary. By stepping out of the business, the team are also given that opportunity to step up and take charge in your absence.
You’ve just had a baby, when is the right time to return to work? As a mumpreneur, it can be unsettling to consider significant amounts of time away from work. It’s normal to want to step back into the driver’s seat as soon as possible but it’s important to take enough time away to switch off and make the most of this amazing new chapter in your life. It’s all about finding the right balance. Planning ahead and locking in the right people could be the key to watching your business thrive during this new stage of life.
Can having a child actually benefit your professional life? An extended period of time away from work can be daunting for any expectant mother, whether you’re a business owner or employee. Carly and Jess found, however, that stepping back from the daily grind afforded them a fresh perspective and a newfound passion for the business and its direction.
How can employers accommodate mums in order make the workplace more parent-friendly? Mums add incredible value to the workplace thanks to their natural dedication, reliability and unrivalled time management skills – something only parenthood can foster! Employers hoping to make the most of these assets can take steps to be accommodating. Dedicated parking spots for easy access during pregnancy, as well as quiet, safe spaces for breastfeeding make a huge difference for new mums. Flexibility with hours is key and providing a laptop for working remotely really helps.
Any final words of wisdom? With a new baby and a young business you don’t have a lot of time to sleep. Carly jokes, “You’re always listening out for any tears, ready to jump out of bed”. But this is exactly the sort of sacrifice that makes a mum a great asset to any team. Running a business should not be a long lost dream once you start a family, in fact, having a baby may just be the perfect time to launch your ideas. As long as you surround yourself with the right support and a dedicated team, you can feel happy in the knowledge that you are giving yourself and your new family the life that you dreamt of. n

OF INVESTING INTERNATIONALLY
Diversification is the name of the game when it comes to developing a sustainable share portfolio. Placing all of your eggs in the local investment basket can be a risk in itself so SUSAN RALLINGS and BIANCA DEZOTTI suggest you consider the value of including international shares in your investment mix. Most Australians own shares, either directly or through their superannuation fund and it’s perhaps not surprising that one of the first places many look for investment opportunities is local companies listed on the local exchange. There are some good reasons for a homecountry bias when it comes to investing in listed assets – information is often readily available and the investor may even have a certain amount of personal knowledge or experience with the sector or company that can help inform investment decisions. However, even taking all of that into account, it’s worth considering whether you should be looking further afield when constructing your investment portfolio.
Reasons to consider investing internationally There are good reasons to consider allocating some of your capital to international investments.
1. Access to broader investment opportunities Australia represents approximately 2–3% of global markets. It stands to reason that there are some attractive investment opportunities contained within that other 98%. Some of those investment opportunities are difficult or impossible to replicate here in Australia. For example, there are industry sectors which are smaller in the Australian market. If you want to invest in sectors such as biotech, aerospace or pharmaceuticals, the opportunities within the Australian market are limited. Even in sectors where there is strong local representation, many of the largest and most successful companies in the world are elsewhere.
2. Access to fast growing economies
There are a number of countries internationally where demographic and economic trends are particularly favourable and point to exciting future growth prospects. Emerging markets, for example, can provide opportunities for greater returns (although those returns come with an elevated level of risk). Companies that are exposed to these markets can be a valuable addition to a high-risk portfolio (in the right proportions and with the right due diligence).
3. Diversification and risk management
In much the same way that it’s unwise to invest all your money in a single company, it may not be ideal to invest all your money in a single country (Australia). The economic performance of different markets will fluctuate over time and being invested in a range of markets can smooth the impact these fluctuations have on your portfolio.
Risks to investing internationally It’s important to understand that, while there are benefits to investing internationally, there are added risks as well.
1. Currency
One of the biggest differences between investing locally and investing internationally is that currency becomes a factor. Movements in the valuation of the Australian dollar and the currency you’re invested in can enhance or detract from the returns of your investment. In extreme cases, even positive returns from your international investments can be wiped out and turned negative due to currency changes.
2. Political and legal considerations
Not all countries have the political stability that we enjoy in Australia. It’s important to remember that in some markets, political decisions can have broad and significant
impacts on privately owned companies and assets. There have been cases where governments have nationalised certain industries they have deemed strategically significant – taking control of assets with little or no compensation to their owners. Australia also has a robust legal system which can be used to pursue restitution when things go wrong – another thing lacking in some markets.

Cash flow is of vital importance to the health of a business. A well-known saying is: “Revenue is vanity, cash flow is sanity, but cash is king”. RONALI MAHENDRA discusses the importance to your business cash flow of recruiting quality credit management staff. Cash flow is of vital importance to the health of a business. Cash comes into a business mostly through sales of goods or services and flows out to pay for costs such as raw materials, transport, labour, and power. The difference between the two is called the net cash flow, which is either a positive or a negative. Positive cash flow occurs when a business receives more money than it is spending. In order to have a healthy cash flow all we need is a shift in our mindset. Credit staff should understand the value of time, in other words that time is money. Getting paid on time should be their mantra. We live in a world where credit is the only currency known to the commercial world and each sale is based on credit limits and credit terms. Every business has to deal with the risk of setting up their credit limit and also weigh up the probability of being paid on time. The term credit means that the company ‘believes’ that they will get paid within agreed terms, i.e. 30/60/90 days, end of the month (EOM). However, the credit management process itself is often not given the consideration it deserves. Often what triggers credit management improvements within a business is when someone new with innovative skills is recruited into a credit management role. A set of fresh eyes and a new hands on approach can impact a company’s cash flow and return on investment, which in turn leads to additional
working capital and a potentially positive effect on the company’s shares.

Combining people and process to transform a company’s cash flow The key to getting paid within terms is to change your customers’ mindsets. The best way to achieve that would be a value creation hiring process by combining the right new staff and process improvement. Credit transformation should start with the line manager setting terms, i.e. to get paid via 30 day, end of the month terms. This is the perfect time for a credit management health check. If the existing credit management and collection procedures and processes are not optimal, then it is time to develop and implement concise and easily understood credit management
Credit transformation is all about ‘within terms’ It is important for a business to understand the difference between overdue invoices and getting paid within terms. Every business should utilise its credit staff and new processes to change customer payment patterns. For example, if every month a customer is known to not pay invoices until they are overdue then the credit staff should have the right set of communication skills and strategies to change this habit. Hiring new credit management staff can directly impact the cash flow of a business and the right credit staff on your team, can transform your business cash flow. We have many opportunities to demonstrate and develop our leadership skills including from other inspirational leaders. Who do you look up to for inspiration, guidance, courage and support? Who were or are your mentors and role models? Can you think of three? Write them down and think about what it is that they do or did that inspires you? How effective do you think you are in influencing others and what is inspirational leadership really all about? Therefore, utilising developed planning processes is essential. So how do we do this? To achieve success when making change, keep these key points in the forefront of your mind:
P = Prepare, prepare, prepare. L = Learn as much as you can along the way. A = Accept that change will happen and it’s better to be in charge of it.
N = Nourish everything (your body, heart, soul and keep the passion when making change).
N = Negotiate the change if necessary – ask your people what they need?
I = Initiate the change – it is better for you to do it than have it forced upon you.
N = Name it and claim it – all ideas need to be considered through the change process.
G = Go for it. Gain and maintain the traction with your planning process to achieve results. When you initiate the change plan you may need to negotiate some of the change ideas allowing you to tackle many of the challenges you may face. It is important to maintain a clear perspective in regard to your ideas, plans and priorities when delivering the change message for your business. 4 ways to create stillness and live
MINDFULLY
Everyone seems to be so busy and flat out accomplishing their ‘to-do’ list let alone finding the time for the fun things in life. KIM ADAMS suggests that by making conscious choices about where you focus you attention you can be less stressed and more productive. We are all busy, juggling multiple roles as we strive to achieve all that we desire. We have too much to do and not enough time to do it. This makes us feel overwhelmed and yet a strange sense of self-importance can come with being so busy. Saying you are ‘so busy’ seems mandatory if you want to be seen as successful.

It all comes down to making conscious choices.
The busier you think you are the more important it is to take time for mindfulness.
Every single moment we are making a choice about what we will mentally attend to. The fact we are so busy multi-tasking our way through the day means that the choosing is often subconscious without the input of our higher faculties.
Remember, mindfulness is not just a thing you do, it is how you live. Mindfulness tools such as meditation help create habitual ways of perceiving yourself and the world at every moment not just when sitting cross-legged on a cushion.
When we don’t consciously choose our thoughts, our brain has to rely on rules and patterns that create our unconscious biases towards reacting to situations or people. These unconscious biases help us make quick sense of the complex world we live in. Sometimes they are extremely helpful and other times extremely limiting, resulting in poor decisions and poor outcomes.
HOW CAN YOU BE MORE MINDFUL ON A DAILY BASIS? 1. Connect with your breathing throughout
Our subconscious will use short cuts and psychological algorithms to make sense of patterns and past experience to guide our decisions and beliefs. Good decision-making requires attention and choice. Mindfulness can help you become a better decision maker by stilling the busyness of your mind and creating the space and time
the day. Practicing deep, yogic breathing is the easiest and fastest way to calm overwhelm and nip anxiety in the bud. Take five slow deep breaths that fill your entire chest and abdomen anytime you feel rushed or stressed for instant relief.
2. Consciously choose to focus on one
3. You have responsibility for your mind and you get to choose what information you focus on and how you will respond. Note when your thoughts are taking over and break the negative spiral. Simply get up and walk outside and focus on the trees or view. Stand up, stretch, and move your body to get you out of your head and reset your thoughts.
4. Eat like you mean it. Don’t eat while working or driving or as you are rushing out the door. You do have time to sit down for 15 minutes and enjoy your food. Eat with gratitude and with intention, experience the pleasure of food and your digestive system will sigh with relief. As a side benefit you will eat less and reach a healthy weight without having to diet. Mindfulness is the conscious choice to pay attention to the present moment with full awareness and non-judgment. Being mindfully present cultivates a sense of calm focus that reduces stress while boosting productivity. Like any new habit it takes time and consistent practice for it to become a natural part of how you live your day. Make time to be fully present today... Now is the most important moment of your life. n

Business success the top 5 positive beliefs Beliefs can be positive or limiting, however, you can re-program your thought processes. MARNEY PERNA outlines the top five positive beliefs found in successful people. Your thoughts and beliefs form your personal programming for success and failure. A positive belief system is an essential tool for success in business and can be found in all successful entrepreneurs without exception. Successful entrepreneurs believe in their ability to succeed and their brains are wired to look for and find solutions to potential issues and challenges instead of being held back by outdated and limited belief systems. A belief system is something that you believe about yourself regardless of whether it is true or not. Limiting belief systems are negative thoughts about yourself or others, often developed during your childhood and added to throughout your life. Common limiting and negative beliefs include: “I am not good enough”, “You will never amount to anything”, “Nobody will ever love you”, “You are a bad influence”, “Money doesn’t grow on trees” and “It’s all your fault”. Bruce Lipton, author of Biology of Belief, believes that negative beliefs affect us on a cellular level and invade the core of our being. When you are told a negative statement often enough and from a very young age, it embeds into your cellular structure and each and every occasion a similar statement is made, it attaches to that initial negative belief. The resulting negative self-belief affects and influences all aspects of your life and the decisions you make.
It is possible to re-wire the messages on a cellular level. You can eliminate or dispel that negative self-belief and replace it with a new positive self-belief that allows you to grow and move forward with confidence and self-esteem. Step one is to identify the limiting or negative beliefs. Do you use particular language that further accentuates those beliefs? Is there a similar pattern in other aspects of your life that is limiting your business possibilities and potential? Other aspects of your life to consider are relationships, health, wealth and even spiritual beliefs. Step two is to take action to change those limiting beliefs to positive ones.

Failure creates opportunities – It is not failure that limits our future success it is accepting the outcome as a fact instead of the potential to do something different next time. Did you know that just a simple walk in the park can change your brain in ways that improve your mental health? How can you make use of this extraordinary phenomenon at home? KATHARINA RUSSELL-HEAD explains how your own piece of nature can invigorate your mind. It used to be very different. We didn’t always live in great cities. We didn’t always get up in the morning in a centrally heated or cooled environment, pop our breakfast in the microwave while waiting for the coffee machine, then jump into our air-conditioned car. We didn’t always spend the day in an artificially lit office before heading home to spend the evening on iview or Facebook, having not once touched the leaves of a tree or watched a butterfly dance. But, once upon a time, our ancestors lived much closer to the earth. They grew their own food, and gathered wild food from the woods and fields. To get to work, or to visit friends or family, they had to walk. They took pleasure in their surroundings – noticing the seasonal changes, seeing what was in flower, and what was happening from month to month. Seasonal fruits and herbs had many uses, and one had to be vigilant, to harvest them at the optimal time. Life was not necessarily rosy, but these folk did have a certain mental resilience. This is the scary bit… What researchers are finding now is that modern city dwellers have a higher risk of anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses than people living outside urban centres. Urban dwellers with little access to green spaces seem to have a higher incidence of psychological problems than people living near parks, and city dwellers who visit natural environments appear to have lower levels of stress hormones. But the good news is that experiencing nature
seems to actually change our brains in some way that affects our emotional health!
How can you make that work for you at home? First, your garden needs to welcome you when you arrive home! Think about this when you get home tonight. Does your garden say, “Welcome!” or do you simply quail at all the work that needs doing? What simple changes could you make here? What about the gate? And the path to the front door? Is the house beautifully balanced? Could you introduce a water feature? Is your garden beautiful to look at from inside your house? Start by choosing one window from which you get a good view of the garden and imagine that garden as a stage, and you’re the designer. What scene would you create? Just have fun! Now you’ve been warmly welcomed home. You’ve sat down and been inspired by the view of your garden from indoors.
What gets you outside?
Join the rooms with an interesting pathway that wanders. This shouldn’t be a straight, nononsense, get-there-as-quickly-as-you-can sort of pathway, but a pathway that allows you to take your time as you weave your way through

Many business owners limit their potential to succeed and fail due to the way they think of themselves within their business. KIRSTY O’CALLAGHAN addresses a common hazard that small business owners don’t see coming.
A client I am working with is expanding her business and at the same time beginning her next degree. She arrived at our session feeling challenged to implement a schedule that worked for her activities on a fortnightly basis. As she was sitting there fidgeting and feeling quite distressed by the task at hand, she blurted out, “Am I going to lose my Tuesday rostered day off (RDO)?” I paused, and then said, “Business owners don’t have RDOs. Are you a business owner or an employee?” Successful business owners and executives know that nine to five thinking has no place in their world. Their conversations with me always centre on checking emails at midnight and rising between four to five am so they can get in some exercise before sitting at their desk ready for the day. They also speak about the ability to be flexible for family demands and the luncheons and events they attend, which of course are work related. To get the results they are aiming for, business owners know there will be weeks, even months, when a 60-hour week is required, and most of that will not be paid up front. They juggle accounts and bills to make ends meet until the invoices are paid and that big client is landed. Business owners are constantly reinventing themselves and their business to meet the demands of a rapidly changing economy and buyer demands. They create job descriptions and lists of everything that is required to be
done for the business to run smoothly and grow, and then jump in and either do it or delegate or outsource it. The challenge is ever present for the business owner or executive to be the best and to show up every day with as much passion and drive as the day before. Many struggle with having the discipline to do this when nobody is watching. What did I say to my client to support her flip in thinking? The shift in thinking had begun with the question I had asked her, “Are you a business owner, or an employee?” She said that question had opened up possibilities she had previously been ignoring. I pointed out to her that successful business owners never really stop working, they are just very clever at choosing what they do and when they do it. They are aware of their mental, emotional and physical needs, and hyper aware of what their business needs from them to thrive. Business owners love that they don’t have a boss telling them what to do, yet understand and take responsibility for the accountability that is placed on them. Most business owners have a dream, but they don’t just rely on the dream. They put in an extra 10 per cent above a great employee; they cry, sweat and get exhausted. They have choices and communicate these choices, benefits and ramifications to their families clearly. They create supporting teams around them and work hard. When they have a day off

What we achieve in business is largely driven by how we think and the decisions we make. The most effective way to improve our business performance is to create brain smart approaches to everyday challenges. To ensure your brain is your best asset, not your greatest liability, these five tips will help you make better decisions and decrease your stress levels.
1) EAT WELL Recent research from Deakin University and the Australian National University has highlighted the importance of diet for brain health. Researchers found eating an unhealthy diet may influence the risk for dementia, cognitive decline and mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Poor dietary choices may impact the hippocampus, a part of the brain believed to be integral to learning, memory and mental health. Running your own business is stressful enough – don’t add to it by making poor food choices! Look for ways to be more organised when it comes to your food and meal planning, with healthy snacks on hand, and healthy options for lunch. If you know you work late most nights, don’t rely on takeaways as your fall back. Keep home cooked meals in the freezer and map out 10 quick meals you can make from the usual contents of your fridge, freezer and pantry.
2) GET MORE SLEEP As business owners, sleep is often the thing we sacrifice when we get too busy. Research shows sleep loss debilitates the body’s ability to extract glucose from the bloodstream. Without this basic energy supply, your brain will struggle to come up with creative solutions. If you increase sleep, feelings of overwhelm decrease, as you are more alert, focused and effective! Take time to work out what keeps you up late. If it is mindless TV watching or being on social media work out your triggers, and create a new routine by setting a timer every night at the same time to bring your attention back to the present. If you are being kept up late doing household chores or working on business tasks, work out how to share the workload with others.
3) WRITE IT DOWN A ‘messy mind’ causes havoc for decision making and productivity. If you are wasting energy trying to remember everything, you are not using your brain for its real purpose – as a problem solving machine! Our working memory can only hold three to four pieces of information at a time, so clear your mental clutter and allow your brain to do what it does best – solve problems, be creative, plan, and make great decisions.
If you increase sleep, feelings of overwhelm decrease, as you are more alert, focused and effective! environment. Physical clutter triggers the part of the brain that notices anomalies that might threaten the survival of our species. As clutter overloads our senses and the part of the brain we need for creativity, it impairs our ability to think creatively, making us feel exhausted, taxed and stressed.
5) BE A MONO-TASKER If you’re tempted to multi-task, think again. SECRET #1: HAVE A MIND THAT IS OPEN TO EVERYTHING AND ATTACHED TO NOTHING We are conditioned throughout our lives to have certain beliefs and set ways of doing things. When others don’t do things the way we do, or have differing beliefs, we tend to label them as ‘wrong’. But our beliefs are just the result of ingrained habits and patterns, as are theirs. Who are we to decide what is right – or wrong – for anyone else? If we would let go of our attachment to doing things ‘our way’ and be open to new possibilities, many ‘barriers’ would be lowered.
SECRET #2: DON’T DIE WITH YOUR MUSIC STILL IN YOU We all have a special gift, a purpose, a passion for something; something that makes our hearts sing. It doesn’t need to be monumental or change the world; it can be a special skill that we have, such as being a wonderful mum, or having a beautiful singing voice, or a way with animals. But too often we ignore that urge within us, in favour of ‘our responsibilities’ and we don’t listen to that little voice encouraging us to follow this passion. It’s a great shame to think you could look back on your life from your deathbed, and have regrets about what you didn’t do... So, go and do it, today!
SECRET #3: YOU CAN’T GIVE AWAY WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE Dr Dyer shared a great example: if you squeeze an orange, out comes orange juice! The same is true for us, as humans, with thoughts and emotions: when we are put under pressure, our behaviour reflects our true self. If we don’t have love within us, we cannot give love away; if we don’t have kindness within us, it is difficult to be kind to others. By showing love, respect and acceptance and to yourself, you ‘fill’ yourself with these qualities, and thereby have them within you to share with others.
SECRET #4: EMBRACE SILENCE Today’s world is noisy, our senses are bombarded from morning to night, and our minds are constantly cluttered. It is easy to lose sight of our way of being, in the midst of all the doing. We seldom have quiet time to contemplate and reflect. Create a time and space in your daily life where you can switch off each day, just for a few minutes, and reconnect with your inner self. You will feel calmer and more at peace.
SECRET #5: GIVE UP YOUR PERSONAL HISTORY We all have a story, a background, in terms of jobs, relationships, health challenges and so on. But regardless of what has happened, this is not who you are. How often have you heard people describing themselves in terms of failed relationships, challenging life situations, or ongoing health problems? It becomes their ‘label’... so drop your ‘story’ and write the story you are intending to live in the future!

YOU! Often, the target of our wrath is oblivious to the whole perceived ‘problem’! Remember, we interpret the world and our daily interactions through the filters of our values and expectations, and we experience dismay and disappointment when someone else fails to play by our rules. It is pointless feeling all wounded and resentful. Just accept that we don’t know what may be happening in their lives, and that by choosing to be offended – yes, it is our choice – we are just causing ourselves stress! Just let it go…
SECRET #8: TREAT YOURSELF AS IF YOU ALREADY ARE WHAT YOU’D LIKE TO BE Have you ever said, “One day, when I ... [fill in the blank] ... then I’ll feel happy and

While you’re busy networking, meeting with clients, delivering work, pulling late nights and early mornings, how do you regularly keep the family fed without having the local takeaway on speed-dial or a credit line at Maccas? ROSLYN TEIRNEY offers a healthier and far more productive solution. You may have heard the advice to commit fully to your business, particularly in those early stages, and leave aside domestic distractions, let the washing pile up and the dust turn to tumbleweeds in the corners of your house. It’s good advice, but in reality, some elements of your life can’t be put on hold while you set up your business. You still have to feed yourself and your family. So how do you do it?
TRY THESE 4 STEPS TO CREATING STRESS-FREE FAMILY MEALS: 1. Make a plan
There’s a certain time each day when we ask ourselves: what are we going to eat tonight? All too often, we’ll throw something together from the contents of the fridge or the pantry and hope for the best. Some of us are more creative than others, but even for the most dedicated foodie, planning is key. Knowing what’s on the menu for the week can remove the anxiety of having to make that decision at the point in the day when your energy levels are dipping.
2. Shop your plan Turn your week’s meal plan into a list. This can reduce shopping time whether online or in store. It also removes the temptation to buy unhealthy foods on impulse. Processed foods are quick to serve but can have a negative effect on mood, weight and performance. Have healthy alternatives in mind. Be willing to experiment with new ingredients, to find lowfat alternatives to your family favourites and stock up on healthy snacks rather than those tempting slabs of chocolate or packets of doughnuts.
3. Keep it simple Make mealtimes as stress-free as possible with simple meals that won’t take hours to get to the table. For example, soups and salads are quick to prepare, healthy and filling. Invest in kitchen gadgets or methods that reduce cooking and preparation time. Let them do the heavy lifting and speed up your meal preparation without compromising the quality of the food you serve.

Forest bathing
Do you enjoy walking in forests? Are you drawn to the outdoors? ANITA CONROY explains why this is so and introduces the concept of forest bathing and the healthy boost it can provide. Do you wonder what is drawing you outside? Why do you have the urge to walk under a canopy of trees? The simple answer is because it makes you feel better, but there is a far more involved and scientific answer as to why you feel calm when surrounded by forest. It is called ‘Forest Bathing’ or ‘shinrin-yoku’ as the Japanese say. People have been enjoying the forests of our planet for centuries enjoying the natural beauty, peacefulness and clean air that they provide. The forest is a form of natural aromatherapy with the trees giving off phytoncides (wood essential oils), which are absorbed into your body through your nasal cavity and skin, making their way into your blood stream and cells. This in turn creates a response in your parasympathetic nervous systems (which controls your body’s response while at rest, starting in your spine and medulla) and creating a sense of calm. In 1982, The Forest Agency of Japan recommended incorporating Forest Bathing trips into our lifestyle to promote health and wellness. Studies have proved that Forest Bathing helps significantly decrease anger, anxiety and depression. To explain further something which we all intuitively know, remember the last time your over-civilised nerves were frayed and you just wanted to escape to the wilderness? It is because nature is a necessity, and humans needs to experience some form of quiet and solitude to remain healthy.

Excessive constant noise can lead to aggressive and violent behaviour. Trees in a forest emit an organic compound (phytoncides) that supports and strengthens our NK* cells (Natural Killer) which are a part of our bodies way of defending against cancer. Beginning in 2005, a study 1 was undertaken with both male and female subjects experiencing a two night-three day stay in forest areas. Blood and urine measurements were taken before the trip, on day two and three during the trip, and then seven and thirty days after completion of the forest bathing experiment. The outcome showed that the mean value of the NK was higher (greater functioning) than on the control days and continued with higher activity lasting longer than 30 days after the trip, suggesting that a monthly forest bathing trip would maintain a higher NK level. Forest bathing has many other benefits which we would all love to achieve such as:

Mince pies are in the supermarket and you’ve just received the first of many party invitations. It’s the busiest time of the year for you professionally and you want to party, but how to do it all and, most importantly, always look radiant.
BEGIN PREPARING NOW: Plan to sleep – Take power naps, meditation or practice your deep breathing. These can all be done in the car waiting for your next appointment. Research has shown that just taking three deep slow breaths changes not just how you feel but how your body responds to stress. Your skin needs time to rest, recuperate and heal. Ease back at the gym – You have enough pressure on you without adding extra physical work. If you don’t regularly exercise, find time for a daily walk to add extra nourishment and oxygen to your skin. Add some supplements – If your life is very stressful incorporating a set of good quality Super Foods during the festive season will help your energy, your clarity as well as your skin. Eat well – Fill your pantry and fridge with good food to avoid last minute easy processed meals. 8. At least twenty times a day, repeat to yourself, “I can’t.” The ensuing sense of helplessness, or overwhelm if you practice hard enough, will ensure you feel at least eighty.
If you follow these ten steps you are guaranteed to age quickly and feel much older than your body. Remember to ignore those who claim they can create ‘Heaven on Earth’ by doing the exact opposite. Because, after all, you know better, don’t you? Or, if you decide that life is too short to be miserable, and you are ready for change, take action today. By taking consistent action, no matter how small, you will find out how quick and easy it is to bring about positive changes in your life. Hint: choose your favourite step above and start doing the opposite. n
