Chapter 1 Nick Caraway has just moved to West Egg Long Island. He lives in a small cottage next door to a mansion owned by Jay Gatsby. Nick visits East Egg Long Island to dine with his cousin Daisy and her unfaithful husband Tom. Tom and Daisy try to fix Nick up with their friend Jordan Baker. Fact: Robert Redford plays Gatsby in the movie.
Chapter 2 Tom picks up his mistress, Myrtle. He also insults her husband, George. Myrtle and George live above a gas station.
The whole gang goes to New York City. Everyone gets very drunk. Tom and Myrtle argue. Tom breaks Myrtle’s nose.
Chapter 3 Nick is invited to a huge party at Jay Gatsby’s house.
Gatsby and Nick served in the army together.
Nick begins to date Jordan Baker.
Jordan Baker cheats at golf.
Chapter 4 Nick travels to New York with Gatsby. Gatsby mysteriously gets out of a speeding ticket.
Gatsby is friends with the man who fixed the World Series. Nick thinks Gatsby is a gangster. Jordan Baker tells Nick that Gatsby once dated Daisy, and is still in love with her.
Chapter 5 Gatsby asks Nick to help him see Daisy. Nick arranges a tea at his cottage.
Gatsby is nervous but the date goes well. Gatsby shows Daisy his shirt collection. Daisy cries.
Chapter 6 Rumors begin to circulate about Gatsby’s past. Gatsby and Tom meet. Tom and Daisy come to a party at Gatsby’s house. Tom tells Daisy that Gatsby is a bootlegger. Gatsby tells Nick that he wants Daisy back.
Chapter 7 Gatsby stops throwing parties. Nick, Tom, Daisy, George, Jordan and Gatsby eat lunch. Tom becomes suspicious.
They all travel to New York City. On the way home, Gatsby’s car runs over Tom’s mistress. Daisy was driving.
Chapter 8 Nick tells Gatsby he should forget about Daisy. Gatsby can’t forget about Daisy.
Myrtle’s husband George thinks Gatsby was Myrtle’s lover. George murders Gatsby, then shoots himself.
Chapter 9 Gatsby’s estranged father and Nick are the only mourners at his funeral. Nick learns that it was Tom who told George that Gatsby ran over Myrtle.
Nick realizes that Tom and Daisy are shallow and greedy.
