-----------------------------------Characters: Scout Tomboy and narrator of the novel. Atticus Finch Scout’s father, a widower and defense attorney.
Jem Scout’s brother. Dill Scout and Jem’s summertime neighbor and friend. Boo Radley Mysterious neighbor who rarely leaves his house. Calpurnia The Finche’s black cook. Tom Robinson Innocent black man accused of rape. A town full of racists.
Chapter 1 Scout, Jem, and Dill act out stories they have read. Dill wants to lure Boo Radley out from his house. They make a game of it. Boo never emerges.
Chapters 2-3 School starts. Dill leaves town. Scout’s new teacher is displeased that Scout knows how to read.
Scout seems much smarter than her teacher.
Chapters 4-6 School sucks for Scout. Boo Radley begins leaving gifts for Jem and Scout in the knot of a tree. Dill returns.
The three try to pass a note to Boo Radley inviting him out for ice cream. Atticus scolds them for harassing Boo. The three continue to sneak around the Radley house. Someone fires a shotgun.
The kids get scared.
Jem loses his pants.
Chapters 7-8 Jem finds his pants. School starts again.
Schools still sucks for Scout. It snows in Alabama.
Chapters 9-13 Atticus defends Tom Robinson against trumped-up rape charges. Scout’s aunt makes her wear a dress.
Atticus shoots a mad dog. Racist elements in town insult the family.
Chapters 14-15 Jem and Scout fight. Dill runs away and joins the kids in Alabama.
Atticus guards Tom Robinson from a lynch mob. Scout shames the lynch mob.
Chapters 16-22 The trial begins. The kids sneak into the courthouse. Atticus hammers away at the case against Tom Robinson.
Atticus proves the allegations are false. Atticus proves Tom Robinson is innocent. The jury finds Tom Robinson guilty. The racists win.
Chapters 23-25 Threats are made against Atticus. Scout has to wear a dress again. Tom Robinson tries to escape and is shot 17 times. Tom Robinson dies. Summer ends.
Chapters 26-31 School still sucks for Scout. The family is threatened. Scout dresses up as a ham for a Pageant. Scout and Jem are attacked. Boo Radley kills the attacker and saves Scout and Jem. The kids finally get Boo Radley to come out.
Conclusion A town full of rednecks ends up killing an innocent man, but the kids eventually get Boo Radley to come outside. So everything works out in the end!
