rop in at the The Buffs Radio Control Car Club (BRCCC) on any Sunday between 9am to 3pm and experience the fun and thrill of racing radio controlled cars! The club which is situated on the grounds of Buffs Club in East London, was established in 2007 and is the only radio control car club in East London and cater for both electric and gas cars. The on-road track is 2500sqm and they are in the process of building an off-road track for dirt road enthusiasts. There are no age restrictions and the club caters for everybody. Depending on your skills you can join the beginners 21-turn touring class, the faster 13.5-turn touring class, Formula 1 electric and a 200mm nitro touring car class. The beginners class is an excellent start for the first time racer and as one develops their racing skills they can advance to the faster classes.

This exciting sport has grown rapidly through the years and Round 2 of the National South African Nitro on-road championship will be hosted by the BRCCC club in East London from 20-20 May 2017. Radio control racers from all over South Africa will be competing in 3 classes namely, 200mm Touring car, 235mm GT and 1/8 scale pan car which reach speeds of up to 100km/h down the main straight! Local drivers Pat and Cathy Lester, Darryn Potgieter and Matthew Attree will be pitting their skills in the 200mm touring car class.
Local race days are scheduled once a month and spectators are always welcomed and are well catered for by an on-site canteen.
Bring the family and come and experience the thrill of these miniature race cars, food and beverages will be on sale and entrance is free.
Radio controlled cars cannot be purchased at general toy shops. They are purposely built racing machines and as such, prices range from R3000 for an electric starter

The sounds of life Hearing is all too often one of those senses that are taken for granted. We do not always realise when we are losing our hearing and often, when we do, we feel it is something we need to adapt to. That’s where you are wrong. The sounds of life are often easily retrievable. Hearing is a complex process that involves a continuous working relationship between the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, nerve pathways and the brain. There are mainly three types of hearing loss: •
Conductive Hearing Loss – problems with the ear canal, ear drum or middle ear
•
Sensorineural hearing loss – problems with the inner ear (nerve-related)
•
Mixed hearing loss – combination of Conductive and Sensorineural
The various shapes of hearing loss are: •
Unilateral - loss of hearing in one ear
•
Bilateral - loss of hearing in both ears
•
Symmetrical - the quality of hearing is the same in both ears
•
Asymmetrical - the quality of hearing is better in one ear.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO, February 2017), “360 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss”. The university of Witwatersrand posted an article with HI HOPES in 2017 that 500 000 people living in South Africa are deaf and 1 500 000 are considered to be ‘hearing-impaired’, that is 4.5% of the total population. The proportion grows with age, with an estimated one in three people over the age of 65 having disabling hearing loss (classified as hearing-impaired). ’Hearing-impaired’ refers to people with a hearing loss ranging from mild to severe. These people can normally benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices.
The most common causes of hearing loss are: exposure to loud noise, illness, heredity, natural aging, ototoxic medications and head injury. If you answer yes to any of the following, you could have a hearing loss and should consider having a hearing assessment: •
Do you struggle to follow conversations, especially in a noisy environment?

Do you ask people to repeat themselves frequently?
•
Do you think people are mumbling?
•
Do you have your TV or radio turned up to a high volume?
•
Do you respond inappropriately in conversations?
•
Do you often have other people comment on your hearing ability?
