Make friends with the TAXMAN The cost of tax compliance remains a significant challenge for small businesses, which must often survive from month to month. Some advice to save you money and undue frustration: Understand the basic requirements and stay ahead of SARS deadlines to avoid penalties. Approach SARS before SARS approaches you. If you haven’t filed income tax returns for a while, you may be concerned that you owe SARS a lot of money. Work with a tax practitioner as soon as possible to establish what your tax liability could be, and then approach SARS without delay. If you communicate early and honestly, SARS may be

more receptive to helping you structure a sensible repayment plan to clear your debt. Act immediately when receiving SARS correspondence. Understand and provide the exact information SARS requires from you. I have found the SARS call centre very helpful if I articulate my issue in a concise, clear way. Alternatively, seek advice from a tax practitioner. Take ownership of your tax matters. After all, the onus to be tax compliant falls on the taxpayer and not the bookkeeper.

Own a little piece of East London history

T

ourism season is around the corner and its time to brush off the cobwebs and remind ourselves what makes East London a favourite visitor destination despite some not insignificant social and economic challenges. East London or more correctly Buffalo City, has a rich tapestry of lifestyle and social narratives that have yet to fulfil their full potential in branding the city and boosting its tourism share. Local tourism products are often in short supply and where they do exist, they frequently don’t get the coverage they deserve. Three locally produced books bring together the historical narrative that gives East London its unique flavour. Firstly, there is The Reef: A Legacy of Surfing in East London. This surfing history traces the local origins of the sport, the interplay with evolving technologies available in the 1950s and the emergence of a local surfing culture. It taps into important social and lifestyle trends across different eras and the fit or misfit between surfing and the norms of apartheid suburbia. The second is Fighting and Fun at Nahoon – a social history of this coastal suburb and its surrounds. The book argues that some urban spaces occupy a unique place in the minds of its residents. Locals not only celebrate that identity; they actively embellish it with the real and imagined attributes 52

of nostalgia. Nahoon celebrates its association with an inner-city wilderness area, world-class beaches, river mouth camping, surfing, horseracing and pioneering flights by the first generation of powered aircraft. Lastly, Off the Circuit: A South African Town Makes Grand Prix History picks up on the thread of a small port that punched well above its weight when it came to pursuing a vision of an international motor racing epicentre. Teasing out the idea that the city showed an inordinate appetite for fun and enterprise during the prewar Grand Prix races, Hollands shows how a lowly motoring editor with an over-active imagination realised an impossible dream. Brud Bishop drew upon unique local skills and a populace that craved fun and adventure over prosperity to host five hugely successful Grand Prix races between 1934 and 1939. All three books were written by Glenn Hollands, a development consultant and surfer with a keen interest in local history. For a limited period, all three books are available as a package for R500 – a saving of R200 if the books were purchased individually. HOW TO GET THE PACKAGE: The books will be at the Christmas Market in Beacon Bay on 23 November. (See opp. page for info), or phone 079 594 2267.
