A
lmost twenty-five years ago 36 runners took off across the lush farmlands and tomato plantations of Brakfontein, little knowing their fun escapade would one day attract more than 2 300 runners, walkers and cyclists.
It also means participants can support what is Lilyfontein School’s biggest fundraiser. All the races start and finish at the school which will be a hub of delicious food and fun entertainment for athletes and their support crews.
The annual Tomato Trot was the brainchild of three Brakfontein runners – John Brown, Rocco Kruger and Danie Bessinger of Sunrise Park Run fame – who got together with Ivan Dewing in a shared passion for both running and the glorious environment in which they ran.
Importantly, since it is crucial to have minimal impact on our precious ecology, the Tomato Trot will once again be a #RunClean event, meaning there will be no plastic water sachets. All en route refreshments will be served in reusable cups.
Now the much-loved Lilyfontein BUCO Tomato Trot & Cycle, which draws both city and country folk is about to celebrate it’s Jubilee year!
And, because everyone likes Tomato Trot brag rights, the first 2 000 registered participants will receive special T-shirts. Taking the tomato theme a step further will be actual tomatoes which will be issued on a first come, first served basis over the finish line.
On 1 February 2020 hundreds of Tomato Trot fans will gather to breathe in fresh country air and take part in six different events: •
a 15km run and 5km fun run/ walk under the auspices of Border Athletics;
Winners will bag cash prizes, while lucky prizes will ramp up the excitement at prize-giving.
•
a 55km and 35km MTB cycle on the Cycling SA calendar and
•
a 15km and 8km cycle.

This means the whole family can shake off the grime of the city and enjoy the countryside and all its charms.

reensleeves Children’s Trust exists as a home for abandoned and orphaned children. The facility is housed on the personal farm of Ian and Di Lehy and the trust has a 99 year lease to use the premises rent free. Greensleeves initially operated as a temporary Place of Safety for children identified by registered local welfare organisations. The demand for safe and nurturing accommodation kept growing and currently Greensleeves Children’s Trust provides in the needs of more than 60 children. For many of the children this will be the only home they will ever have. Due to growing demand, Greensleeves now has an onsite primary school, providing quality education to 55 learners from grade R to grade 7. The Trust operates without any government funding, and are therefor entirely reliant on donations from various corporations and individuals. By committing to a monthly or onceoff contribution, you can make a direct impact on the life of an orphaned, abused or abandoned child. There are also endless nonfinancial ways the public can help;

stablished in 2012, African Angels aspires to provide high quality educational programmes to socioeconomically disadvantaged children from the rural community of Chintsa in the Eastern Cape. Children in this area are severely deprived across multiple developmental domains as a result of deeply entrenched poverty. African Angels takes a whole community approach to development, and engages the broader community, particularly parents and caregivers, to ensure the successful development of children participating in the various programmes including the African Angels Independent School, a community learning centre, a vulnerable boys’ mentoring project and an early childhood development project. African Angels is a well-regarded Non-Profit Organisation that is deeply committed to making a sustainable impact within the Chintsa community.

In 2020 African Angels will educate 142 children from grades R – 7 at the African Angels Independent School, and support 23 graduates in 12 different high schools, including the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg. African Angels welcomes regular volunteers at the school to support their academic programme in the arts, extra reading, extra maths, and sport. You will need to have your own transport to and from the school. Individuals and companies can sponsor a child’s education at the school, which will attract a tax deductible certificate and BBBEE points. Removing financial barriers to quality education for low income parents is essential.
