April is Volunteer Month. Volunteering has been an integral part of the lives of people and communities all over the world. Individuals and institutions benefit from the valuable assistance of volunteer workers who share their knowledge, skills, time and resources. Volunteers are people who give and receive. If you are one of those people who would like to give more but can’t quite figure out how to do it, then this column is for you. We also featured Canaan Care Centre on page 22, African Angels on page 44 and Greensleeves on page 46 in a little more detail. Catch Projects

CANAAN CARE CENTRE Canaan Care Centre (CCC), a non-profit organization based in Southernwood, supports twenty one children, from newborns up to age sixteen. All these children suffer severe physical and learning disabilities for which therapy and stimulation is essential. Our aim is to provide this, as well as a full menu for both our day care and residential children. CCC has been running for nine years, but things have never been more difficult. We are in desperate need of help. Anything from much-needed groceries, toys, and learning aids to a monthly or once-off donation will be gratefully accepted. For the more adventurous Our vision includes extending the centre into a larger home and eventually being able to provide a facility to our present crop of teenagers. We currently also offer an outreach program to assist families and parents. We have achieved so many “once impossible” goals in the past two years. Despite this year proving to be our tough-

22

est one yet due to the delay and possible cancellation of muchneeded funding, we have faith that with the aid of our community we will continue to provide a safe and stimulating haven for our Angels. My name is Leigh Tebbutt and I am privileged to be a full-time volunteer at CCC. Volunteers assist with fundraising as well as aiding, caring for and simply loving the children. Regardless of his or her disability, the unique personality of every child shines through. Our days are spent in therapy sessions, teaching and nurturing. Yes, there are tears, sadness and many poignant moments, but to experience the trust and unconditional love of these children is a gift like no other. Most prominent is the incredible love and joy present at Canaan. Our Facebook page is... https:// www.facebook.com/pages/Canaan-Care-Centres-NPC/1562076 91080799?ref=bookmarks …. in case you would like to follow our progress and daily happenings …

n April 25th people across the globe take part in a wide range of activities to mark World Malaria Day. For half the world every day is malaria day - a day to keep up the fight against this killer disease. The aim of World Malaria Day is to provide education and understanding of malaria, a global scourge, that is both preventable and curable. This international campaign is held yearly and their motto is ‘Invest in the Future, Defeat Malaria’. The risk for malaria increases

from September and September to May is considered the malaria season. Overall control initiatives have been very successful in the malaria transmission areas. Mostly falciparum malaria is seen. The risk remains low in KwaZulu-Natal and is confined to the very far northern KZN. There is no malaria in the Drakensberg, Hhluhlwe and Umfolozi Game Parks and St Lucia areas. The risk of malaria in the Kruger National Park will increase and malaria chemoprophylaxis needs to be considered. Mozambique has year round malaria and the risks in southern Zambia, Zimbabwe (Vitoria Falls) will likewise increase. Measures to reduce mosquito bites (the malaria mosquitoes are most active from sunset to sunrise) are essential and include application of DEET containing insect repellents to exposed areas, wearing of long pants and socks and sleeping under a mosquito net. Travel health advice for travellers to South Africa: February to April

Malaria factsheet Key facts Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. In 2010, malaria caused an estimated 660 000 deaths (with an uncertainty range of 490 000 to 836 000), mostly among African children. Malaria is preventable and curable. Increased malaria prevention and control measures are dramatically reducing the malaria burden in many places. Non-immune travellers from malaria-free areas are very vulnerable to the disease when they get infected.

It is time to wage war on malaria by using preventative methods. An effective way is sleeping with insect repellent treated mosquito nets which can reduce the malaria illness by 50 per cent in areas of high transmission. Vital Protection from HHL Technology is a long action insect repellent that is a ‘vital’ step in preventing malaria contamination.

Greensleeves place of safety for children was started some 18 years ago by Di and Ian Lehy. Everything started when they decided to help an existing staff member’s girlfriend when she arrived at their home with a baby on her back and a baby on her hip. This was the beginning! Gradually the local community heard about what we Di and Ian were doing and that they were happy to help children who needed a place of safety, and so the numbers grew and so too did their vision. They would often get calls from Child Welfare asking them to place a child in a safe environment for 3 months and then possibly foster the child. As the need for this is so high, the realization grew that there was not enough space to accommodate all the children. The need for more room for all the children led them to look into altering an existing stable into a proper Children’s home. In order to try and get the conversion of the stable going and with limited resources, Di, on celebrating her birthday, invited friends and family to the farm indicating that she would love their “presence” and their presents! The list of presents included paint, hardware vouchers etc. And people were truly incredible. They came 48

to celebrate Di’s special day by helping her fulfil a dream. And so it has continued. Friends and family of Di and Ian, as well as their Church have been very supportive of all that they were doing and especially in the conversion of the stable into accommodation for their 39 children. Materials were donated and the building gradually progressed until it was completed and officially opened in November 2010. The community continues to make a huge difference to the lives of the children. Doctors, dentists, optometrists, social workers, teachers and a chemist have all come forward and offered their services in various ways. At this point in time, Di and Ian are running the home using their own resources and any donations they receive. They are in the process of applying for Government support, but this takes time and as yet, is not available. If you would like to contribute to the running of the home in a monetary way, banking details are: Greensleeves Trust Account Absa: 9265431853 Branch Code: 632005 Phone: 043 737 7003/ 082 770 4336 May you in return be abundantly blessed.

What the EFF? at the Guild Theatre from 7.30pm. It’s hard to live in South Africa for more than five minutes without looking around in wide-eyed bewilderment, and asking: “What the EFF?”. Whether it’s hippies rubbing their chords together to produce solar energy, militants marching into parliament in Pep Store overalls and Italian shoes, or taxi drivers who manage to simultaneously cut you off and flip you the bird while paging through the newspaper and counting their money. . .at some point in every day, you will say: “What the EFF?” Fortunately, Nik Rabinowitz is here to answer that question. Or maybe not answer it, so much as shake it a bit, and see what falls out. From the leafy green ganglands of Constantia to the imaginary book-storage lockers of Limpopo, Rabinowitz casts his eye far and wide, and muses: “What the EFF?” And if politics isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of other ridiculousness that’ll have you shaking your head, and clutching your sides.
