Let us
T
he Jikeleza Festival at Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve is an East Coast institution. The Wild Coast Jikeleza Association organises this event each year to draw people into the area to experience all that it has to offer. The significant growth in the number of activities and venues available to visitors in the area has made this is an impossible task to achieve in just one weekend. The result is the launch of the new Jikeleza Festival WEEK – a week long showcase. The programme incorporates activities for everyone, young and old and every age in between. For the athletic, there is a trail run series including the Glengarriff Lodge Beach Run, the Table 58 Night Run and an Inkwenkwezi Game Reserve Run, a Barefoot Surf Challenge and a MTB fun ride. For the less energetic, there’s an Open-Air Cinema and Night Market at Areena Riverside Resort, an Emeraldvale Brewery Family Picnic AND the traditional festival. The week full of activities and the special offers made by our members during this time will
10
you enable visitors to experience more of what is on offer on the Wild Coast Jikeleza Route. The Festival Week will round off with the traditional Festival at the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve. The day’s programme will include a full line-up of live music headlined by Majozi, adult and children’s entertainment throughout the day, the Talisman Craft Beer Tent and gourmet food and craft stalls. For those not wanting the fun to end, we’ve added an After Party to the programme featuring, among others, Ard Matthews of Just Jinger fame at the C-Club in Cintsa East. The Wild Coast Jikeleza Route will put on a show to remember 17-25 August – don’t miss out on your opportunity to experience all that is on offer. Pack the family into the car, book a few nights’ accommodation and “Take a drive and stay a while!” For the full programme and booking information, please like the wildcoastjikeleza facebook page, visit our website www. wildcoastjikeleza.co.za, email festival@wildcoastjikeleza.co.za or call the Visitors Information Centre on 043 737 0005

What is
“Adventure Racing is a true test of the human condition and spirit and one of few extreme sports that showcases the extraordinary power of teamwork.” Says Mike Clarke Lilyfontein School has been hosting the annual Adventure Race since 2000. This race caters for all ages and fitness levels. Adventure Racing is a fast growing sport that incorporates navigational, mental and physical challenges.Teams of 4, with at least 1 member of the opposite gender, compete in various age categories with a unique distance and set of obstacles to complete. Winning in an adventure race requires more than just speed and fitness. The race requires the team to navigate through several activities to reach specific check points along the way. There is a healthy support 36
of entries in the Grade 1-3 and Grade 4-5 divisions. This is attributed to eagerness of both learners and parents to participate and support from local schools. The Family Fun category is targeted to families, friends and colleagues that want to participate but do not want to “kill” themselves whilst participating; this is a relaxed and fun category to cater for all levels of fitness. The Lilyfontein Adventure race is a Provincial Qualifier for U13, U15, U19 age categories and the winners in these divisions are invited to participate in the Annual South African Adventure Racing Championships The Corporate divisions invite friends and fitness bunnies to explore the local area and apply all their skills to compete in the premium division in the event.

n early 1930s Alfa Romeo that raced and crashed spectacularly in the 1936 East London Grand Prix recently sold for more than R80m at a
Bonham’s auction. The Alfa Romeo P3 Tipo B Monoposto came under the hammer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale in the UK on the 13 July 2018 and fetched

R80,441,775. In its day the Alfa was at the cutting edge of racing technology with a straight eight-cylinder twin overhead cam supercharged engine and a weight of just 750kg. However, in the 1936 Grand Prix, when scratch entry Richard Shuttleworth was side-swiped by a sudden gust of wind, the car was reduced to a wreck. Shuttleworth had previously complained that the Alfa was handling like a “milk jug”. The gust through a break in the trees at Orange Grove sent him rolling off the track into a wattle plantation and ultimately an East London hospital, where he remained unconscious for several days. Fellow racers T.P. Cholmondeley-Tapper and Arthur Dobson were alarmed by Shuttleworth’s serious head and leg injuries and persuaded a Johannesburgbased specialist to rush to East London on a chartered aircraft. As luck would have
it, the aircraft suffered engine trouble short of East London but, after an emergency landing, the doctor was driven to the hospital and succeeded in restoring Shuttleworth to consciousness. Shuttleworth spent many months recovering in South African hospitals. The badly bent Alfa eventually found its way from East London back to the Scuderia Ferrari workshops in Modena, Italy where it was restored to its former glory by 1939. Shuttleworth recovered from his injuries and remained an avid collector of cars and aircraft. As a pilot he joined the Royal Airforce at the start of WW2 but survived for barely a year before dying in an air crash. It is rumoured that Shuttleworth’s Alfa Romeo P3 might appear at the East London leg of the South African Historic Grand Prix Festival in November – hopefully in windless conditions.
This is the 6th extract from the book on East London Grand Prix history provisionally titled Off the Circuit: A South African Town Makes Grand Prix History currently being written by Glenn Hollands and scheduled to be released in time for the historic GP Festival in November
