s I am finishing off this edition of The What’s On, we are in the throws of cold and wet winter weather. Everywhere you go people talk about how cold it is and there seems to be consensus that we are experiencing one of the coldest winters in a long time. The good news is that the worst is over ... and pretty soon spring will be in the air. Sunrise on 1 August is at 06:59, and on 31 August sunrise is at 06:29 ... 30 minutes earlier! The days are longer and the sun a little warmer. We will not discuss the wind at this point in time! :) As far as events are concerned, there are literally something for everybody this month. There are interesting events like the Bubble Run, the Milk Run, the Carel du Toit Centre fun run and the Dale Eldridge Live, Laugh, Love 5km fun run/ walk. There’s the very popular Jikileza Festival, Koi Show and Pets Expo, an evening with award winning chef, Vanessa Marx at Mpongo Private Game Reserve, Barista courses at Lavender Blue, shows at the Guild/Arts Theatre Club and Hemingways, a hypnotist and a Christian comedian!! Yip, we have it all ... and more ... see complete events listing from page 44 onwards. The great giveaway this month is a weekend for 4 at Igoda Mouth Resort. See pages 16-17 and page 34 for more info. In addition to the weekend giveaway, we have three other very cool giveaways, thanks to all who sponsored this. Welcome to our new advertisers, please support all our advertisers, they are the people making this publication possible! Should you wish to advertise with us, please contact Rentia on 079 594 2267 or Tirsa on 043 735 2059. Enjoy what East London has to offer this month and send us any event-related info. We will publish it free of charge.

gem A on our IGODA MOUTH RESORT
doorstep
Visiting the friendly Laughlands one cold Friday morning I was once again reminded of the beauty of our area and the amazing facilities on our doorstep. Igoda Mouth Resort is a place well worth visiting, and thanks to the management at the Resort one lucky family of 4 will get the chance to do so ... free of charge! Be sure to enter our “Weekend at Igoda competition on page 34 and you might be spending a weekend experiencing all of this goodness first-hand very soon!
O
ur region has no shortage of exquisite family holiday resorts. The picturesque, family-(and pet*) friendly Igoda Mouth Resort is one such spoilt-forchoice option. Igoda Mouth Resort is close enough for an easy weekend break, a mere 20km from East London on the R72, but once there it seems a million miles from the stressful day to day living. If you are looking for an affordable family holiday destination in a self-catering facility, then Igoda Mouth Resort is an ideal destination. Once here, your only obligation is to relax, regroup and enjoy what the peaceful and tranquil resort has to offer. The resort is nestled in a valley along the bank of the Igoda River and within walking distance to the beach. The self-
16
catering cottages each contain either two or three bedrooms and an open-plan lounge, dining room and kitchen. Each cottage is fully equipped with a stove, fridge-freezer, microwave and TV. The beautiful beach is located a few hundred meters from the cottages. In one direction the beach has approximately 2km of sand with stunning sand dunes, great fun for sand-boarding. In the other direction there are rocks for approximately 1km, making it a popular spot for fishermen. The lagoon is located about 50m from the cottages and is also a popular fishing spot. Igoda Mouth Resort is managed by ever-helpful and knowledgeable husband and wife team, Hugh and Ronel Laughland.

to do in the resort
to do outside the resort
For the energetic there is a walking trail up to the top of the hill behind the resort don’t forget your camera.
Kidd’s Beach
There is a private game reserve adjacent to the resort where, Impala, blesbok and other game can be viewed. The resort is peaceful and tranquil with a rich bird life, over 150 species of birds are endemic to the area, this includes the Fish eagle, Kingfishers, Steppe Buzzard, Owls, Hornbills, African Oreoles and Swallows. Bird-watching Cycling Jogging A short 4 x 4 trail which offers a magnificent view of the resort and surrounding area. Participate in social tennis matches on a Saturday afternoon in Kidds Beach, ask at the office for details.
This beautiful 8km stretch of white sand is a popular attraction in the area. Great for long walks and swimming, be sure to bring the children with you. For anglers, the river mouths provides a good spot to throw a line, as well as off one of the rocky outcrops. The Avalon Market at Kidds Beach is held on the first Sunday of every month, beautiful arts and crafts can be purchased. Enjoy a great cup of coffee or tea in the garden and if you don’t feel like cooking ready made meals can be bought. Cove Rock Primarily a surfing and diving beach, Cove Rock is not popular for swimming, but it is a great place for whale spotting from the high vantage points and for watching seabirds nesting in the striking sandstone formations. There are fantastic fishing spots and it’s a great beach for soaking up the natural beauty and chilling. Keen hikers will enjoy the hour-long walk along the coast from Lagoon Valley. 17

But if you wait another 10 years, you’ll be too old and no one in your class will recognize you or care about the fact that you now drive a Ferrari. ‘King of Christian Comedy’ stars in his fourth annual one man stand-up comedy show titled “Lord I’m Almost 30!” A comedy show like no other, uniquely written to typify the different challenges that a 30-yearold Christian bachelor living in the 21st century would undergo. We are very excited to present this new work. The exhibition will open to the public from the 17th July, 2015. Sunday opening times: by appointment ANN BRYANT MAIN GALLERY: GERMAN SETTLER MONUMENT EXHIBITION is on display in the main gallery until 20 August 2015 Between the years 1856 and 1860 and later in the 1870s, some 7000 German settlers arrived in the Eastern Cape. These people, noted for their hard work and industry while facing many hardships, made new lives for themselves and their descendants in South Africa.
Entitled DEN DEUTSCHEN EINWANDEREN, the memorial, designed by architect, Jack Marsden, had two parts. The one was a granite stone figure group, created by the noted South African sculptor, Lippy Lipshitz, which stands in a commanding position on the East London beachfront. It was unveiled in 1960. The other part consisted of five plaques set into a wall, which depicted scenes from the lives of the settlers. The bronze reliefs were designed and made by the German sculptor, Bodo Kampmann and were unveiled in September 1961 by Mr O.E. Heipertz, the West German consul. The bronze plaques have since been stolen, it is then that Former Director of the East London museum Dr Gillian Vernon teamed up with Darby Gounden of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality’s International Relations department and with the aid of local artists through the Friends of the Ann Bryant Art Gallery ran a competition to design the artwork. Mr John KingsleyHall won the competition having the most historically correct design. The designs were then turned into mosaics and were installed by a Cape Town based company Mosaic works headed by Jacqueline black. The mosaic installation was funding by the German Consulate. These mosaics can be viewed at the gallery in the form of pictures or can be seen at the actual monument itself. There are also illustrations for a cook book on German Settler traditional food recipes and traditions illustrated by the late Ivan Vincent a well known architect in East London in past years. PERMANENT COLLECTION on view until 20 August 2015 The Ann Bryant has a strong collection of South African art, especially from the 1960’s but also earlier works. At one time the East London Fine Art Society took over the running of the gallery and had major exhibitions, for example by Thinus de Jongh and Hugo Naude. The gallery sometimes bought from these exhibitions. It holds works by Norman Catherine, Judith Mason, Walter Battiss, Sydney Carter, George Pemba, John Maufangejo, Cyprian Shilakoe, Willie Bester and many others.
