DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN
A
beautiful, well-kept lawn is an aesthetically pleasing addition to your home environment. It provides a space for relaxing, for entertaining and is especially beneficial as a safe surface for children’s play. • For best results mow your lawn regularly, as mowing improves the lawn. Never allow the grass to grow too long before mowing. The biggest mistake made in lawn care is cutting the lawn too short – it’s important never to cut off more than 1/3 of the leaf blade in one go and also to keep mower blades sharp. Keep kikuyu at a height of 4–6cm above ground, finer grasses such as cynodon, at a height of 3–4cm, and LM lawn and cool season lawns at a height of 5–7cm. This results in deeper roots which are more capable of surviving dry spells. • If it doesn’t rain irrigate your lawn once every ten days. If the soil is hard and compacted aerate by spiking with your garden fork. This will encourage better absorption of water. Water areas where pets urinate more frequently. • Lawns should be fed during the growing season from September to April with a nitrogen rich fertilizer such as “Lawn and Leaf 7.1.3”. Apply this fertilizer once every four to six weeks and water in well. During the winter months feed with a low nitrogen fertilizer such as “2.3.2.” Feeding promotes healthy growth and a healthy lawn can resist weed infestations. • Applying a herbicide to actively growing weeds during the growing season may be necessary to fight weed infestations. Follow the instructions carefully. Applying the incorrect dose of herbicide can be damaging to your lawn. Always fertilize the lawn before using a herbicide and apply when the lawn is long and lush. Prepared by: Floradale Garden Centre.

A history of the
greater Nahoon area - great gift idea -
Do you live, work or play in Nahoon? If you do, you may not be aware that this seemingly tranquil suburb has a turbulent and quirky history. It was once the frontier between colonial East London and the Xhosa – in 1878 pitched battles were fought in the Nahoon bush and the settlers went into panic mode at New Year when it was rumoured that the Xhosa were about to march along the beach to attack on the city and seize the gunpowder stores. How did the unusual name come about – the jury is still out but there are some interesting theories.
Published by author Glenn Hollands in 2016. Glenn is a Nahoon local and has previously published The Reef - A Legacy of Surfing in East London. Both books are available from Glenn and to order email him on glenhol@ telkomsa.net. R200 each. It will make a very unusual corporate gift,
an ideal local interest book for guest houses and an excellent Christmas present.
Morganville Motorcycle Museum MORGANVILLE FARM, on the way to Morgan Bay, is a private museum owned by Billy Nel.
