The Friendly Route So Christmas has come and gone, yet you still have almost two weeks left before the children go back to school – if you haven’t already this may be the time to explore the Friendly Route. The Friendly Route stretches along the N6 from Glen Avon Farm, 4.5km from Merrifield School and the turning circle in Beacon Bay to Mpongo Park, 35km outside East London. Along the route there are a number of fun-filled attractions geared up for those families looking for a different way of spending the day together. From discovering that perfect piece of antique furniture and other bric-a-brac to visiting touch farms and bird, game and reptile viewing as well as hiking and biking trails – visitors are spoilt for choice. Most families with youngsters know the joy of a touch farm and there are
three on this route - Burnside, Mel’s and The Farmyard. At Lindale Farm a variety of birds and farm animals will keep the kids (and adults) interested as well as entertained. The Lion Park and Apex Predators @ the Python Park offer close encounters with both indigenous and exotic animal species, while Mpongo Park allows self-drive tours through its 3500ha game reserve. Mountain bikers and trail runners will love the countryside at 3 Silos. There are 5, 10, 15 and 20km loops to cater for all levels of fitness. While almost all venues offer something in the way of refreshments, the Python Park restaurant is open until 10pm six days a week and Mpongo Park’s restaurant offers a fine view of its hippo pool. So get in your car and head out that way – you won’t be disappointed! See ads overleaf

photographic competition
Celebrate our South African seas by participating in The Sustainable Seas Trust’s (SST) exciting nationwide photographic competition. “One of the best ways to encourage people to think about the environment, celebrate the beauty of South Africa and become part of the conservation movement is to involve them in taking action,” Dr Tony Ribbink, SST’s founding trustee and director said adding that conservation and sustainability depend on people choosing to behave in ways that care for the environment. “The action of picking up a camera and thinking about the environment being photographed is one small step in the right direction. If many people take this small step, then the overall cumulative commitment has the potential to become a powerful movement, especially if the youth of today is involved,” Dr Ribbink said. “A further step is for the public to evaluate the photographs and vote for those which they think are excellent and deserve to be published and win 38
awards. Once again, people need to think about the environment and the messages related to conservation and sustainability. Another small, active step!” he added. The photographs selected by the public and professional judges will be published in a book to celebrate 20 years of the New South Africa with a focus on the Splendours of South African Seas. Winning photographs are eligible for a variety of sponsored prizes offered by SST and its partners including BirdLife South Africa. The four photographic categories are: Ocean Landscapes; Sport and Recreation; Culture and History; Marine Life – plants and animals, including invertebrates. The competition will be judged by Fiona Ayerst, Peter van Kets, Eleanor Yeld Hutchings, Dalfrenzo Laing, Peter Chadwick and Hanli Prinsloo.
